According to Arthur Golden's absorbing first novel, the word "geisha" does not mean "prostitute," as Westerners ignorantly assume--it means "artisan" or "artist." To capture the geisha experience in the art of fiction, Golden trained as long and hard as any geisha who must master the arts of music, dance, clever conversation, crafty battle with rival beauties, and cunning seduction of wealthy patrons. After earning degrees in Japanese art and history from Harvard and Columbia--and an M.A. in English--he met a man in Tokyo who was the illegitimate offspring of a renowned businessman and a geisha. This meeting inspired Golden to spend 10 years researching every detail of geisha culture, chiefly relying on the geisha Mineko Iwasaki, who spent years charming the very rich and famous.

The result is a novel with the broad social canvas (and love of coincidence) of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen's intense attention to the nuances of erotic maneuvering. Readers experience the entire life of a geisha, from her origins as an orphaned fishing-village girl in 1929 to her triumphant auction of her mizuage (virginity) for a record price as a teenager to her reminiscent old age as the distinguished mistress of the powerful patron of her dreams. We discover that a geisha is more analogous to a Western "trophy wife" than to a prostitute--and, as in Austen, flat-out prostitution and early death is a woman's alternative to the repressive, arcane system of courtship. In simple, elegant prose, Golden puts us right in the tearoom with the geisha; we are there as she gracefully fights for her life in a social situation where careers are made or destroyed by a witticism, a too-revealing (or not revealing enough) glimpse of flesh under the kimono, or a vicious rumor spread by a rival "as cruel as a spider."

Golden's web is finely woven, but his book has a serious flaw: the geisha's true romance rings hollow--the love of her life is a symbol, not a character. Her villainous geisha nemesis is sharply drawn, but she would be more so if we got a deeper peek into the cause of her motiveless malignity--the plight all geisha share. Still, Golden has won the triple crown of fiction: he has created a plausible female protagonist in a vivid, now-vanished world, and he gloriously captures Japanese culture by expressing his thoughts in authentic Eastern metaphors.

Book Description

A literary sensation and runaway bestseller, this brilliant debut novel tells with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.

Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it.

In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable.

Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. Sayuri's story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Through her eyes, we see the decadent heart of Gion - the geisha district of Kyoto - with its marvelous teahouses and theaters, narrow back alleys, ornate temples, and artists' streets. And we witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup and hair; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it. But as World War II erupts and the geisha houses are forced to close, Sayuri, with little money and even less food, must reinvent herself all over again to find a rare kind of freedom on her own terms. Memoirs of a Geisha is a book of nuance and vivid metaphor, of memorable characters rendered with humor and pathos. And though the story is rich with detail and a vast knowledge of history, it is the transparent, seductive voice of Sayuri that the reader remembers.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-09-03

Absolutely one of the best novels I have ever read!!! I actually tried to get done at work as quickly as possible so I could get home and read this book. Such a wonderful story with compelling characters made me want to read and read and read this book. When I finished it, I was sad it was over. I'm still hoping for another page turner from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing storytelling.......2007-08-26

This was a fascinating book about the probable life of a successful geisha before and after WWII. I especially liked reading about the customs: the traditions, the ceremonies, the hierarchy of the okiya, the history behind the kimono and the symbolism behind the face paint and hair-dos. Made for a very interesting read and a great story, too!

5 out of 5 stars I give very few books a rating of 5 !.......2007-08-06

I have given To Kill a Mockingbird a 5 and this book a 5. You may think they are nothing alike - but to an avid reader who reads everything from Dickens to Kellerman I look for a book to touch my soul, to peak my curiosities, to effect me. This book did that. I highly recommend it. Especially before watching the movie. I first read it many years ago, in a matter of a day or so. Just loved it. Then just recently watched the movie, which was slightly different but very well done. Romance, mystery, shock, laughter, tears, sadness, happiness. You will love, care about and hate the charachters. It will touch your heart.

5 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN.......2007-08-05

Okay, so after 2,400 reviews there's nothing that I'm going to be able to say that will ad to plot, character or even writing style. but trust me when I tel you that if you want a read that will absolutely consume you for three days or more (depending on how fast you read), you HAVE to pick up Memoirs of a Geisha. The narrator's voice sounds exactly like a child's would if she was telling this tale, and matures as the girl herself matures into a stunning young geisha. It's the best read of my year so far, and I probably won 't find another book I like as much for several years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Less Hollywoodization than the movie.......2007-07-31

I must say many factual parts were well-researched, and the author succeeded in portraying a life of geisha who survived in the early 20th century. Overall, the story is entertaining and enjoyable even to Japanese. I was very impressed by how well the author described beautiful kimonos and how Japanese people behave.

However, as a native of Japan, I found some awkward descriptions here and there. I found it hard to believe that so much use of poetic metaphors from someone like Sayuri, a geisha. My guess is that the author elaborated most metaphor parts based on the facts in order to make the story more romantic. Some elaboration was O.K., but the author did too much of it and made the story less realistic. The author attempted to convince readers that all geisha are not prostitutes by explaining that there are classes of geisha ranging from lower class prostitutes to higher class successful geisha who had privilege of luxury and more freedom supported by their "Danna". It was nice of the author that he makes efforts to correct many foreigners' "misconceptions" about geisha to protect their dignity, but his novel failed to do it. Why "mizuage" was involved in exchange of money and the geisha's feelings are the least of concerns? Owned by "Danna", whom the geisya does not necessarily love, provided main source of income from him that allows luxurious life in exchange of her sexuality is no different from a definition of prostitute. Since it is a fictional story, I should not expect too much accuracy and understanding of Japanese from an American after all.

The movie was disappointing though I know many westerners loved it. I admit, the scenery and music was extraordinarily beautiful, but frankly, I was disgusted by Hollywoodization of the original. Ironically, the movie only strengthens my "stereotypes" of how western males think of Japan ( ;-P).

When Dr. Paris DeMont lost her beloved Gabriella to the mindless tragedy of Nine Eleven, she lost more than her partner of eight years. She lost her will to love. A successful cardiologist to New York City's elite, Paris now lives a sterile emotionless existence on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

But Paris finds out that even when one tries to give up on life, life has a way of interfering and forcing you to live it. When Paris returns to Banyon, Missouri to oversee the repairs to the aging Victorian farmhouse she inherited from her grandmother, the protective barrier she has wrapped around her heart is tested to the limit.

Childhood friend Sloan McKinley still carries a torch for Paris… A torch that even after twenty-five years still burns brightly and threatens to consume them both if only Paris will let it.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2007-01-04

This is one book that everyone should read. It is a wonderful love story and also a suspensful story.Kenna White is a very good author and has written two other books that should not be missed.

2 out of 5 stars It did not live up to my expectations.......2006-10-07

After reading the customer reviews I decided to purchase this book. Unfortunately, I did not find the book captivating at all and I was disappointed. Having read books by authors such as MG MacGregor, Katherine V. Forrest, Radclyffe, and Lyn Denison just to mention a few, I have become very picky.

4 out of 5 stars Rekindling an Unknown Lost Love..........2006-09-20

Having enjoyed Kenna White's first book, `Shared Winds,' this reader looked forward to reading `Beneath the Willow.' The book proved to be an enjoyable read with interesting characters and an engaging story line. However, when compared to `Shared Winds,' it's a little disappointing.

Main characters Paris and Sloan are both strong, admirable women. Paris has been lamenting the death of her long-time partner, Gabriella, in the events of 9/11. She seems to be existing in a black hole devoid of emotion and filled with long hours running her cardiology practice in New York. Friends and family have been unable to pull her back into the real world. Paris heads to Missouri to handle some business dealings regarding her late grandmother's house, but finds herself mixed up with a shady property manager and rekindling an adolescent romance she didn't even know existed. Resisting the pull of her heartstrings, Paris doesn't know how to handle her conflicted emotions. She wants to run back to her safe life in the big city, but also aches to find solace in Sloan's arms.

Great story, but that's where things start to break down a little. The property manager is more a distraction than necessary. Paris stands up to him, but doesn't really come across as the powerful woman seen in the rest of the book. The story itself has several minor inconsistencies that are distracting as well. These are mostly timeline issues and physical descriptions, but things that should have been caught and corrected nonetheless. It is this lack of attention to detail that made the story a slightly lower quality than `Shared Winds' in this reader's mind.

This is an enjoyable book I'd easily recommend to friends. It's only White's second book, but she has a raw talent that could easily develop into a masterful art. Keep writing Kenna!

          4 out of 5 stars A few unnecessaries.......2006-08-08

I love Kenna White's simplistic, yet filling romance stories.
This is the second book that I have read from this author.
The book reflects on the main charcter's childhood and the one special friend that she revisits each summer. They eventually let their feelings out and become much more than friends. The book made me long for my youthful summers.
The one thing that I did not like about this second book is that the author seemed to have felt the need to throw in some bad language. It just did not fit with the old fashioned romance. Otherwise it would have been a classic love story.

          5 out of 5 stars Weeping Willows.......2006-07-29

Kenna White has outdone herself in her second novel.

The character development and the flashbacks in time help bring the characters into perspective.

Paris and Sloan seem to have fallen back into their childhood rut except for Paris has some issues to deal with.

Sloan is patient and I love the ending.

          Check it out and see.

The Kzin were the mightiest warriors in the galaxy, which they were wasting no time in conquering, one star system at a time. Then those feline lords of creation ran into those ridiculous weed-eating pacifistic apes who called themselves humans. And the catlike Kzin found they had their collective tail caught in a meat grinder. When the mighty Kzin moved in to take over the monkey-infested worlds, they got clobbered. The humans, with their underhanded monkey cunning, turned communications equipment and space drives into weapons that cut the dauntless Kzin heroes into ribbons. And then those underhanded humans gained a faster-than-light drive, and no amount of screaming and leaping could keep the Kzin from losing their first war in centuries of successful conquest. But you can't keep a good warcat down, and the Kzin have by no means given up. New weapons, new strategies, and new leaders. Here they come again and those monkey-boys from Earth had better watch their backs. Once again, it's howling time in Known Space!

3 out of 5 stars Skip the Hal Colebatch stories.......2007-09-17

Niven, of course, is great. How did Hal Colebatch get included. He knows nothing of soldiers or professional warriors, and his depictions of such are just stupid. The first story almost made me chuck out the whole book. I'm glad I didn't but honestly, Colebatch must be Niven's nephew or something. He can garner zero credibility for action/adventure-type sci-fi. His characters and their relationships (huh?) are really shallow. But if you like to read about people doing one stupid thing after another to cause their own demise and then pulling through due to even more stupidity on their part, you'll love Colebatch's stories. Better yet, skip Colebatch's stuff and read the good ones.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying return to Niven's universe, but uneven writing.......2007-03-13

I have read pretty much everything Niven himself has written, and I think I have pretty much hoovered up all the Man-Kzin Wars series too. It's a way of franchising that part of Niven's universe to other writers, which seems on the whole to be good for everyone - writers, publishers, and readers. Obviously, it's in Niven's interest (and his publishers) to avoid any dilution of the brand.

This latest fix includes three stories by Hal Colebatch, two by Matthew Joseph Harrington, and a short contribution ("The Hunting Park") by Niven himself. I think Harrington's are clearly the best: well plotted, scientifically convincing, and pacily written, they accomplish the challenging feat of extending Niven's vision rather than just wallowing in it. Colebatch is good, but his style is sometimes a bit sentimental for me; to take one example purely at random, "He stroked her, whispered 'Mother', and died. Leonie moved to close his eyes". As other reviewers have said how much they like his writing, this is clearly a matter of taste. To be honest, I didn't feel that "The Hunting Park" stands out above the other stories; indeed I would go so far as to say that Harrington's stories are crisper, more interesting, and generally more like early Niven.

One thing has been puzzling me: the striking cover illustration appears to depict Vaemar and Dimity in action. He is armed with a wtsai, she with a huge gun of some sort. But how come Vaemar is shown as resembling a huge lion, instead of a tiger? Niven has stated over and over that kzinti are basically orange and look like big fat tigers. Also, the powerful impact of the picture merely serves to underline how extremely unlikely any emotional bond between these two creatures would be.

Bottom line: strongly recommended for Niven fans, and SF lovers in general. The standard of writing is really very good, and Harrington's two stories "Teacher's Pet" and "War and Peace" are fit to stand beside Niven's own books such as "World of Ptavvs" and "Protector". As far as I know, there can be no higher praise.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, exciting, and a bit sexy.......2006-07-25

I enjoyed all these stories enormously. Hal Colebatch, who wrote the first three stories which take up most of the book, is a fine writer. His plots are becomoing more complex and surprising. He handles the sexual tension between Dimity and Vaemar in "Catspaw" beautifully (I think I am falling in love with Dimity, especially since he appearances in "One War for Wunderland@" and "Music box" in Man-Kzin X. She is a great character, but so are Colebatch's other characters, human and Kzin. One really warms to the old Kzin Raargh, and feels for the young "Strtaight Arrow" Vaemar, with a fight between his conflicting heritages going on inside him. Plenty of action, jokes, and some splendid descriptive writing to convey xonvincingly the feel of another world - some of "Grossgeister Swamp" is like as dream. Matthew Harrington's stories are also extremely well done, mind-stretching and full of surprises. The science in them seems good, too. Larry Niven's own story is punchy and effective and leaves uyou feeling proud of the human race. Six great stories!

                      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-01-20

OK, I know things have to change, but the title of this book shows how far off the path this series has gone. The "War" is a distant no-show in this book. Instead, sigh...we get relationships. I will say this: let Oprah explore relationships and give us good sci-fi. I couldn't believe all that you-me stuff going on between Vaemar and Dimity while they were supposed to be fighting the supposedly near-invincible Pak. And the fact that Vaemar almost said that he loved Dimity! That was just too syrupy for me. If the Kzin weren't so interesting, I would have put this one down after the first two stories. Well, I would've checked out Mr. Niven's offering, because it is easily the best in the lot. IMHO...wait for the paperback on this one.

5 out of 5 stars ''Create an Alien that is as intelligent as a Human but thinks DIFFERENTLY!.......2006-01-14

Well this is the XI of the saga that began with Larry Niven's 'The Warriors'. The age old challenge given to Sci-Fi writers to create an interesting Alien is well served with this series in general and this Volume in particular.

Stories ranging from post occupied Wunderland with Man and Kzin struggling to learn and live together to the motives and methodologies of a Human-PAK, they range from the emotional to laser true analytics.

Larry Niven has created a vast Tapestry and several 'loose ends' are submitted in this book for the Readers' approval while of course, creating other doors to be explored in 'Known Space'. This book will please all comers ranging from the New to the Faithful.

Like a PAK protector with breeders in danger you will be 'Hungry for More' long after you finish the final page.

This audio Bible is great. Johnny did a fantastic job and paced himself nicely. His pronunciation is well done. I enjoy these CDs immensely.

No frills or fancy workings, just plain old Johnny Cash reading the New King James version of the New Testament. It's straight-forward and understandable, delivered in a matter-of-fact tone that leaves interpretation open to your own mind. Johnny Cash does his best to read without flair and dramatics, allowing the words to speak for themselves.

I enjoy unwinding after a long day by throwing on some headphones and relaxing to the soothing words of JC.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful, wonderful !.......2006-09-18

this set was everything i could have hoped for. it was amusing that someone reviewing this product would describe Johnny Cash's reading voice as "wooden" ... have they never heard him speak or sing ? if you have heard his voice you know what to expect. personally i find his voice rich, comfortingly real, and ideally suited to a project such as this

there is no annoying music in the background, which is ideal for people who suffer from diminished hearing, like me, or people who find such unwelcome additions to be nothing more than a distraction

his reading is often described as slow, but i think it might be better described as casual - about the speed he spoke in public or on TV : he typically seemed unhurried when he spoke, but having a "script" allowed him to talk faster than i'd anticipated. his cadence is not too fast, just faster than i had been led to believe

the books are broken up into chapter-length files (important if you wish to rip to MP3 files as i've done) and sometimes span from one CD to another (important if you're considering getting this for an elderly person who might need to search for the next CD, as well as possibly complicating the operation of a CD player for a person with visual limitations)

this is a wonderful product and i would gladly purchase it again. the only "improvement" i can suggest is offering an MP3 version for people who may lack the technical ability to convert the CDs themselves (they are Legion)

                      5 out of 5 stars The best........2005-12-17

The guy proclaims the Word of God beautifully and simply. If you're not much of a believer, it just is done well and straight forward.

The New King James Version is more modern English (without all the "unto's" and "ye's" and "thou's"). Easier on the ears. Also, no accompanying music. Just him reading slowly and with understanding.

The above comments are in comparison to James Earl Jones reading the New Testament. The guy has a voice like no one else, but the original King James version language- lame backround music - and a whispery, momontone reading (if you can imagine James Earl Jones doing that) - makes this far inferior to Johnny Cash's.

5 out of 5 stars Wooden Delivery but Fun Idea for Johnny Cash to Read the New Testament!.......2005-10-06

JOHNNY CASH: READS THE COMPLETE NEW TESTAMENT is a nice idea, but a bit less than inspiring, when it's all said and done.

His reading style is a bit wooden. He is better than a grade school kid reading from a text book, but very similar in the unsure delivery of it all.

Johnny gets the job done, but does no dramatizing or voice inflections to help flesh out the text and dialogue. I would have enjoyed it more if he had tried to emphasize highlights or emotions in the text and dialogue. He sounds like he has great reverence for the Bible, but seems too unfamiliar to be comfortable adding pertinent emotions in the correct passages.

This is probably best for folks who aren't into the Bible, but they are willing to listen to the novelty of having Johnny Cash read from the New King James Version.

It is easier to follow this narrative of the New King James Version with Johnny Cash, than another, similar celebrity project of JAMES EARL JONES--KJV--NEW TESTAMENT, which I also recommend for fans of either celebrity.

Johnny Cash's CDs collection of the New Testament has no background music, which is a blessing in itself, as the background music on most Bible CDs is usually cheesey or too redundant and irritating. There are also no commentary introductions, as often appear in non-celebrity Bible reading CDs. That's too bad, because it would have been more personal if Johnny Cash had introduced each book in his own thoughts and words.

A more entertaining Bible reading would be one of the DRAMATIZED versions, with multiple voice actors, which sound a lot like a radio play. That makes it VERY easy to follow the words being read! I would suggest the Zondervan company's NIV version for that, for most people. Go for a King James Version only if you REALLY enjoy the Olde English wording.

My current favorite CD Bible is THE MESSAGE! It is a paraphrased version, so it's not completely accurate, word-for-word, but it is in a contemporary wording, which can often make some passages more easily understood, more rich in meaning, (but can sometimes be mis-interpreted, so it's not perfect, either).

If you are reading these reviews about the Johnny Cash New Testament CDs, then you probably will be interested enough to enjoy this CD set, and you will surely get your money's worth out of this collection. I would recommned buying this!

                      Book Description

The New Testament of the New King James Version is read in its entirety by music legend Johnny Cash. After 20 years of encouragement from his mother to record the Bible, he approached the recording of the New Testament with "fear, respect, awe, and reverence for the subject matter." Cash said further, "I also did it with a great deal of joy, because I love the Word." Johnny Cash Reads the Complete New Testament, is 19 hours of hearing the Word of God from one of the most distinctive voices of our time. This special edition 16-CD boxed set includes a photograph and spiritual journey section.
