In his third novel, Lying Awake, Mark Salzman breaks the primary rule of fiction by creating a protagonist who has virtually no external life. Sister John of the Cross, a middle-aged nun cloistered in a Carmelite monastery in contemporary Los Angeles, languished for years in a spiritual drought--"her prayers empty and her soul dry"--until she suddenly received God's grace in the form of intense mystical visions. So vivid have her visions become that they burn a kind of afterglow into her mind that she transcribes into crystalline (and highly popular) verse. The only downside is that they are accompanied by excruciating headaches that cause her to black out.

The story hinges on Sister John's discovery that her visions are in fact the result of mild epileptic seizures. As she learns from her neurologist, temporal-lobe epilepsy commonly brings about "hypergraphia (voluminous writing), an intensification but also a narrowing of emotional response, and an obsessive interest in religion and philosophy." Dostoyevsky, the classic victim of this condition, wrote of his raptures: "There are moments, and it is only a matter of five or six seconds, when you feel the presence of eternal harmony.... If this state were to last more than five seconds, the soul could not endure it and would have to disappear." An exact description of Sister John's visions. The question she now faces is whether to go ahead with surgery--and risk obliterating both her spiritual life and her art--or cling to a state of grace that may actually be a delusion ignited by an electrochemical imbalance.

Using a very limited palette, Mark Salzman creates an austere masterpiece. The real miracle of Lying Awake is that it works perfectly on every level: on the realistic surface, it captures the petty squabbles and tiny bursts of radiance of life in a Los Angeles monastery; deeper down it probes the nature of spiritual illumination and the meaning and purpose of prayer in everyday life; and, at bottom, there lurks a profound meditation on the mystery of artistic inspiration. Salzman made a highly auspicious debut in 1986 with Iron and Silk, a memoir of his years in China, and since then he has dramatically changed key in every book--most recently from the absurdist American suburban chronicle of Lost in Place to the artistic-crisis-cum-courtroom-drama novel The Soloist. Lying Awake is quieter and more sober than Salzman's previous narratives, but it is also more accomplished, more thought-provoking, and more highly crafted. --David Laskin

Book Description

Mark Salzman's Lying Awake is a finely wrought gem that plumbs the depths of one woman's soul, and in so doing raises salient questions about the power-and price-of faith.

Sister John's cloistered life of peace and prayer has been electrified by ever more frequent visions of God's radiance, leading her toward a deep religious ecstasy. Her life and writings have become examples of devotion. Yet her visions are accompanied by shattering headaches that compel Sister John to seek medical help. When her doctor tells her an illness may be responsible for her gift, Sister John faces a wrenching choice: to risk her intimate glimpses of the divine in favor of a cure, or to continue her visions with the knowledge that they might be false-and might even cost her her life.

Download Description

In a Carmelite monastery outside present-day Los Angeles, life goes on in a manner virtually unchanged for centuries. Sister John of the Cross has spent years there in the service of God. And there, she alone experiences visions of such dazzling power and insight that she is looked upon as a spiritual master.

But Sister John's visions are accompanied by powerful headaches, and when a doctor reveals that they may be dangerous, she faces a devastating choice. For if her spiritual gifts are symptoms of illness rather than grace, will a "cure" mean the end of her visions, and a soul once again dry and searching?

This is the dilemma at the heart of Mark Salzman's spare, astonishing new novel. With extraordinary dexterity, the author of the best-selling Iron & Silk and The Soloist brings to life the mysterious world of the cloister, giving us a brilliantly realized portrait of women today drawn to the rigors of an ancient religious life, and of one woman's trial at the perilous intersection of faith and reason.

Lying Awake is a novel of remarkable empathy and imagination, and Mark Salzman's most provocative work to date.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful exploration of faith and forgiveness.......2007-10-03

I'm a huge Salzman fan and it's hard to pick a favorite. But if the subject matter seems abstruse, be reassured that this gem packs a lot of interest and yes, entertainment between the covers. Spoiler alert, plot give-away to follow. Readers are asked to consider if the spiritual visions of a nun are diminished because they are caused by a small tumor that gives her epileptic fits. As we follow Sister John's crisis of faith, Salzman's big-hearted depiction of spirituality inspires us think twice about what we "know."

Weaving in and out of the narrative are vignettes in Sister John's life that we can all identify with. "The real penance in cloistered life, most Sisters agreed, was not isolation; it was the impossibility of getting away from people one would not normally have chosen as friends."

While the author surely didn't don a habit for his research, this fresh-eyed look at life in a cloister and the very human struggles of its inhabitants feels authentic. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A small gem of a book.......2007-05-17

In Lying Awake Mark Salzman has written a gem of a book about a nun in a monastery just outside of modern day Los Angeles who has been seeing visions and interpreting those visions in inspirational poetry that--in many ways--is a vital cog in keeping the monastery up and running. This "blessing" that Sister John of the Cross has experienced begins to become ever more frequent and intense to the point where fear for her health rises among her fellow sisters. When she is examined and found to have an epileptic disease that requires surgery she is faced with the choice of giving up her cherished "visions"--and her health--or being treated and gong back to "normal". Placed within the context of the introspective life of a monastery--and juxtaposed skillfully in a series of vignettes that reveal and debate various aspects of the "visionary" lives and works of earlier Christian notables--concepts such as "normal" take on new and heightened meaning.

Salzman is a skilled and masterful writer. The book was both challenging and engrossing. The intertwining of past and present is skillfully rendered. The book is way short on plot but the characters are--for the most part--beautifully rendered. If I have any complaint it would be that the book could have benefited from a bit more biographical information on the various characters--several key cast members get short shrift on that score--yet it is a minor complaint. At a 170 odd pages--with many word free pages of woodcuts and whatnot between the many chapters, this is a short yet intense and moving read. A true gem of a book.

4 out of 5 stars A story of faith.......2006-11-04

When Sister John of the Cross realizes her spiritual visions -- which have come after years of doubting her vocation -- are a result of epilepsy, she must decide whether to treat the condition and possibly lose her close relationship with God, or refuse treatment and risk her life.

In this spare novel, Salzman digs deep into questions of faith, humanity, sisterhood, and religious sacrifice. With not an extra word he addresses Sister John's dilemma. The reader doesn't know until the very end what Sister John will decide, and what the results will be.

A wonderful look at the true meaning of faith.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and moving.......2006-10-31

This is one beautifully written book and it is thought-provoking. It still lingers in your mind after the last page has been turned and you find yourself questioning the plot of this book as well as remembering the lyricalness of Salzman's words. It is a simple volume that packs a punch with its thoughtfulness, and simple statements. It offers up questions of faith and what it means to live in a cloistered world. Instead of it sounding stifling, it sounds liberating and sometimes, peaceful as well as tiring and hard. This book focuses on Sister John and her journey of faith.

Sister John was a young woman when she joined the convent and throughout her journey, she tries to find the meaning of faith, servitude to God and what it means to live among very strict rules. Then all of a sudden, she starts experiencing a new spiritual connection to God and finds that she needs to write all the time. Her poetry sells and brings a modest sum of cash to the convent to meet their needs. More importantly to her, she finally feels closer to God and feels the peace invading her bones. Sister John is deliriously joyous to have found the meaning of her life.

Or has she?

Cruelly and suddenly, she discovers her blinding headaches were the cause of a tiny tumor and now she questions her faith and purpose for her life. Then she experiences a deep shadow of doubts and feeling the absence of God in what she terms the deepest shadow of her soul. She fears the loss of her creativity but she also fears being a burden on her sisters. This is the dilemma she faces.

It is a very thoughtful book, which packs a lot to think about in such few pages. I have no idea how I manage to have this in my collection ~~ but I am glad to have it. It's a keeper especially since it is written beautifully and it does ask tough questions of faith that we all need to ask every once in awhile.

4 out of 5 stars Mental illness in religion and art.......2006-05-26

This is the story of a middle-aged nun with temporal lobe epilepsy, a condition which creates ecstatic seizures and hypergraphia (prolific writing) in the sufferer. The nun has to decide whether to let the malady progress (she is disrupting the life of her monastery) or to have an operation which may halt her successful writing career and stop her ecstatic seizures, which she interprets as being direct communication with God.

Sympathetic to the religious impulse as refuge from pain and abandonment, Lying Awake explores the nitty-gritty of contemplative aspirations without romance, sensuality or metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. Well-written and compelling, it touches on many interesting topics such as religion as refuge, the face and purpose of faith, spiritual maturity, and the role of mental illness in religion and art. The book is completely unbiased, which is pleasant. A very empathetic and seemingly objective view of convent life.

5 out of 5 stars From A Woman's p.ov during South African Apartheid.......2000-03-29

This book provides different accounts on the difficulty of being a woman during Apartheid. Many of the stories are of African women who served as servants (very low paying and often demeaning work) to the white families living in a South African society under Apartheid. A few chapters describe the difficulty of being a white woman as well, being treated as second class citizens from their husbands and men. Racial predjudice is the underlying theme and the struggle just to survive day to day life is described in great detail. Children are also represented in this book, the African children's lives were often no better then their parents. This book is easy to read and is a great way to learn more about society during Apartheid.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming Book.......2006-07-05

This is a beautiful and touching moment in a child's life...a wish come true. I also loved the interactive qualities, the nautical messages and the delicious cookie recipe which I have tried. There's more...the additional information at the back of the book was very interesting and educational. I can't wait to start sharing this book with my 4 month old grandtwins!

5 out of 5 stars Lying Awake.......2004-04-22

What is especially appealing to me about Lying Awake? I like the poetic style that echoes the gentle rocking of a boat. Words are repeated like "slap, slap, slap" and "chug, chug, chug", and children respond to these sounds. The watercolor illustrations of marine life, such as the harbor seal, are outstanding. The activities are a real bonus addition to a book which is already full of interesting information. What comes across is a genuine understanding and love of boats and life on the tide flats.

5 out of 5 stars About what it is like to live on a boat.......2004-04-12

The collaboration of author Helen Furbush and illustrator Christine McCroskey, Lying Awake is a thoroughly enjoyable picture book story about what it is like to live on a boat. More than just an amusing story, Lying Awake is also quite educational, offering fascinating tidbits on daily shipboard life, ranging from safety tips; to commonly used nautical terms (like "bulkheads" for walls); to information about marine wildlife, and more. Lying Awake is delightful, entertaining, and highly recommended reading for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2004-04-07

Lying Awake is a wonderful story to share with a child. All ages will enjoy the beautiful illustrations and the interesting remembrances of the main character. The additonal activities and coded messages make it a great educational tool while the story itself makes for a wonderful read-aloud book.

Silver's Bane concludes the Shadowlands Trilogy,I was so Engrossed that I read it overnight. I liked that the story wasn't clean and pretty by the end, you really got the sense that the war would leave lasting scars for all involved. There is quite a bit more romance, and some deep sadness as well, The use of magic in these books hits you on such an emotional level. some of the sequences are beyound amazing. There is a spiritual connection to be found in these novels that goes well beyond what you would expect to find in the average fantasy read. If you like books that stay with you long after the turn of the last page, give this trilogy a try.

              May I also suggest:

              5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Series.......2007-03-18

The writer of this series saw me inquiring about these books on one of Yahoo's reading groups and graciously offered me the first two books. I am so glad she did. Both books were wonderful and I was thrilled to find out there is a third.

The goblins were horrible villains who feasted on humans and sidhe alike. To control them, a silver caul was created with faery magic. The caul protects the realms for many years but a new sidhe queen sits on the throne and she isn't the leader her mother was.

I love books where multiple groups of people come together for a common cause. When the caul goes missing and the goblins once again overrun both worlds, young heroes from the sidhe and mortal worlds step forward to do their parts to stop the savage goblins. To their horror, the goblins are bigger and fiercer than ever before.

I fell in love with the sidhe and was entranced by their beauty. I could see how mortals would be bedazzled by them. I was equally repulsed by the goblins. Kelleher's descriptions and characterization brought her characters to life for me and I was totally immersed in her worlds. I can't wait to read Silver's Lure.

4 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD FAERY STORY.......2007-02-07

I ORDERED THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THIS TRILOGY AND I WAS HIGHLY IMPRESSED. THE STORIES WERE WELL THOUGHT OUT AND IT REALLY TRANSPORTS YOU IN TO THEIR WORLD. I LOVE THAT THE AUTHOR MADE THESE WOMEN STRONG AND NOT GODDESS GORGEOUS LIKE MOST AUTHORS DO. SHE MADE THEM LIKE REAL WOMEN AND IT WAS VERY NICE CHANGE. I HAVE READ THESE BOOKS OVER NOW ABOUT 3 TIMES AND I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THE THIRD ONE.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Story!.......2006-03-07

I am not going to write a summary for this book, you can definitly find muliple reviews that will do that. This is a wonderful sequal to Silver Edge. I waited with anticipation for the release of this book and was definitly not dissappointed. It has a good story line that continues the story of Silver's edge. The characters are very realistic, more shades of gray than just "good" or "evil". Anne Kelleher is very descriptive and make sit easy for a person to picture what is happening in the story.

Why only 4 stars and not 5? The character were just a little confusing, some conclusions about them seemed to appear out of no where. Other than that it is a wonderful book and I would definitly recommed it. I can't wait till Silver's Lure is released.

              5 out of 5 stars Silver's Bend.......2005-12-30

Its always important to escape from every day life, Whether it would be to go on vacation and forgetting the world. Anne Kellher is that very guide.

              That is the greatest gift.

This is the first of the lengthy Miss Silver series that is an actual noir novel. In it we have a femme fatale, a dodgy Scotsman, and a very old manor house that has a terrible curse. This is an exciting little story, and I really enjoyed it, even though I had figured out who the killer was right away. The things that I didn't figure out came out as the plot developed, and they were interesting and varied enough to keep my interest. There is darkness and danger here, and the heroine is very appealing. This is a pretty good little story.

                        Book Description

In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. The world is a paradise-and then, in a moment, it ends. The council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive. But scattered across the face of the earth are communities which have returned to the natural life of soil and small farm. In the village of Raven's Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap. Refugees are flooding in, bandits are roaming the woods, and his former lover and his only daughter struggle through the Fallen landscape. Enemies, new and old, gather like jackals around a wounded lion. But what the jackals do not know is that while old he may be, this lion is far from death. And hidden in the past is a mystery that has waited until this time to be revealed. You cross Edmund Talbot at your peril, for a smith is not all he once was. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Fun but a Chilling reminder...........2007-03-26

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fantasy fan...however, I am one of those fans that paradoxically hates books about dragons (been done to death) and magic (seems like cheatin' to me). I prefer my fantasy with a good sword, club or bow thank you very much. Having said that, I could not put down "There Will Be Dragons". Ringo manages to convince even a hard core skeptic like me of the scientific possiblity of dragons and magic (the magic is a by-product of technology), allowing me to suspend my disbelief enough to thoroughly enjoy a book with "Dragons" in the title.

In John Ringo's vision of the future there is no crime, no pollution, no hunger, no work and even childbirth has been replaced with artificial, external wombs. Human beings (with the help of an omnicient, omnipresent, omnipotent AI named "mother") are now able to indulge themselves in any fantasy that their hearts desire. Humans are shaped via amazing technology into dragons, unicorns even sentient mist...but there is a price. When the council, earths last vestiges of government, split into warring factions, the technology that supports all humans falls apart leaving a populace abandoned in the wilderness that the world has become. Those that are left have no ability to survive after having been so lulled into apathy by a technology that allows food to appear with a word.

The last vestiges of humanity split into small factions, constantly on guard against bandits and wild animals while attempting to learn to survive based upon ancient knowledge held by the few men and women that have chosen (even during the heyday of technology) to live in the old ways.

As far out as the premise of this book may sound, the truth of Ringo's world is that in many ways we are there already. Most of us have no idea how the technology that we use to survive from day to day works. We are dependent upon electricity and fossil fuels to survive and unable to repair even the simplest of our machines. We too are lulled into complacency by instant communication and entertainment of all kinds as well as the ability get any food that we desire in as long as it takes to go to the grocery store. Were humanity to experience an EMF (electro magnetic flux), millions would die of cold and starvation within a month. Most have no idea how to grow food or make even the simplest of tools to survive.

"There Will Be Dragons" is a fun, fascinating read that demonstrates John Ringo's deep understanding of the role of the military as well as his appreciation for the Repulican form of government. It is also a grim reminder how fragile human life is and how easily and quickly it could all change. Read this one and see the parallels to our current condition.
The book begs us to ask the question: "If it all fell apart tomorrow, could I survive?" Most of us, sadly would not.

I love the premise. The survivalist method of taking a society that had it all and making them come to terms with needing to learn how to survive. The folks who did survival as a hobby ended up being the ones to lead the masses to safety, etc.
I am nearing the end of this novel and find it a great work.

this is a very original book with lots of post apocolyptic rebuilding issues, with a little magic via sci fi thrown in.

5 out of 5 stars There will be dragons ... but not in this book.......2006-01-04

The dragons show up in the sequel, the 2 nd of the trilogy. I agree with the other reviewer, this is a 4.5 star book. I really, really like the premise of this book. The internet "grows up" into Mother who knows when a leaf falls in the forest and when a bird dies. But, the old adage, who shall guard the guardians ? When the guardians of Mother, the council, have a falling out, literally all hell breaks loose on this planet wide "garden of eden". For in this future possibility, not only did the people eat the apple of knowledge, they also ate the tree of everlasting life. But, just like the Garden of Eden, the people were cast out into the wilderness. Just a great story. In fact, I change my mind, I am maing this 5 stars instead of 4.

This is my third Ponder book, which I have read through Chapter 4. Incidentally, Catherine Ponder mentioned in her autobiography that the first four chapters are the most helpful. However, I will continue the book to the end.

What a learning curve, and what a powerful book this is. I believe it could teach us more about the soul than several other books on that subject. Her writing, to me, is more dynamic and compelling than any that I've read from a considerable list. I will re-read and take notes since I'm like Andy Rooney who learns best after "writing it down".

Much study and writing and great empowerment!

I love, love, love this book! Mrs. Ponder expertly draws you into her book page by page addressing many important questions one could have about prayer. She tells stories throughout the book about people in dire situations that have used affirmations/tells what affirmation the person used to help change things for the greater good.

She also discusses forgiveness and how bitterness can be a reason why your prayer was not answered. This was a big wake up call for me. I could be standing in my own way of success and happiness simply because I was not fully forgiving those people I felt hurt me. But even more then that, I needed to work on forgiving myself for the situations that I created in my life just as much I needed to forgive others. And yes there are many more bits of good knowledge to fill your life with good vibrations!

This book has definately transformed my prayer life and it will be a book that I will refer to time and time again.

This is the best book I've read on metaphysics and spiritual growth. Catherine Ponder has an indredible way of bringing life into perspective. I highly recommend this book for everyone. I've purchased many of these to give to my friends and family.

When you buy one of Catherine Ponder's books it is like having a life coach with you at all times. She has this gift to bring enthusiasm, joy, and knowledge to anyone who reads her writings. The prayer book is no exception. Even if you do not like to pray, I guarantee, after you are done reading even one chapter in the book, you're going to pray! She is one of the greatest motivators to help others want to get well, want all they can out of life and she shows you how to do it. It doesn't matter if you are religious. It is for anyone as it feels more like you are saying affirmations. If you don't know how to pray right, or feel you do pray but your prayers don't get answered, or you just can't motivate yourself to do it, I believe this book will help.

This is my favorite book. I have now read it 3 times, and it continues to be empowering. The prayer suggestions are straight forward result achieving prayer suggestions. I had my largest month in business after doing the exercises in one of her chapters. I promise you, if you read this book, and really use the exercises, it will change your life, and bring fulfilment and dreams to reality.
