Book Description
Isabelle d’Este, daughter of the Duke of Ferrara, born into privilege and the political and artistic turbulence of Renaissance Italy, is a stunning black-eyed blond and an art lover and collector. Worldly and ambitious, she has never envied her less attractive sister, the spirited but naïve Beatrice, until, by a quirk of fate, Beatrice is betrothed to the future Duke of Milan. Although he is more than twice their age, openly lives with his mistress, and is reputedly trying to eliminate the current duke by nefarious means, Ludovico Sforza is Isabella’s match in intellect and passion for all things of beauty. Only he would allow her to fulfill her destiny: to reign over one of the world’s most powerful and enlightened realms and be immortalized in oil by the genius Leonardo da Vinci. Isabella vows that she will not rest until she wins her true fate, and the two sisters compete for supremacy in the illustrious courts of Europe.
A haunting novel of rivalry, love, and betrayal that transports you back to Renaissance Italy, Leonardo’s Swans will have you dashing to the works of the great master—not for clues to a mystery but to contemplate the secrets of the human heart.

Chapter One
X * FORTUNA (CHANCE)
FROM THE NOTEBOOK OF LEONARDO:
When Fortune comes, seize her firmly at the forelock, for I tell you, she is bald at the back.
IN THE YEAR 1489; IN THE CITY OF FERRARA
She grew up in a land of fairy tales and miracles. That is what Isabella is explaining to Francesco as they ride through Ferrara's streets. It is Christmastime, and though there is no snow on the dry stone road, the horses shoot clouds of steam into the frigid air through their nostrils.
This is the first time she has been allowed to escort her fiancé through the city on one of his visits. Francesco Gonzaga, future Marquis of Mantua, has come to Ferrara to romance his soon-to-be bride and to enjoy the city's many Christmas pageants ordered by Isabella's father, Duke Ercole d'Este, a great patron of the theater. Isabella believes that the more she tells Francesco of Ferrara's secrets and wonders, and the more she shows him of her father's spectacular building projects and improvements, the more he will realize her value.
In this very church, Isabella says, pointing to St. Mary's of the Ford, almost two hundred years ago on Easter Sunday, the priest broke the Eucharist in two, and flesh and blood came spraying forth, covering the walls of the church and splattering the entire flock.
"The parishioners watched in awe," Isabella says, eyes wide with drama. "The Bishop of Ferrara and the Archbishop of Ravenna came to see it. They instantly recognized it as the body and blood of Christ and declared it a true miracle of the Eucharist."
Francesco solemnly makes the sign of the cross as they ride past the church, but his eyebrows arch skeptically, making him look entirely out of step with the act.
Beatrice trots ahead of the pair of lovers, her long braid swinging in saucy rhythm with the horse's mane, as uninterested as her steed in their conversation.
"Isn't that right, Beatrice?" Isabella asks her sister for confirmation of her story, hoping that the odd girl does not say anything to contradict her. Beatrice is a puzzle to Isabella, a fact that the older sister blames on the girl's unsupervised upbringing in wild Naples. The girl is a feral, unformed thing, alternately shy, naive, aloof, and bold--the latter especially apparent when riding or hunting. How such a small fourteen-year-old girl, who is not particularly courageous outside of these activities, excels at all manly sport is a mystery to Isabella, but the fact of Beatrice's prowess remains, no matter how enigmatic.
"I wouldn't know. I wasn't there!" Beatrice finally answers without turning around, but they can hear her laugh at her own joke.
The animal's swaying ass taunts Isabella, who knows that her sister is dying to break away from them to test the horse's speed. Francesco has brought Drago, the pure white Spanish charger, from his family's stud farm on the island of Tejeto, as a gift for the girls' father. But Beatrice immediately took over the animal, talking to him in whispers that should be reserved for a lover, and hopping upon him and riding away, as if the painstakingly bred horse was meant to carry a little girl in a pink riding dress and not a fearsome knight in armor.
"I'll tell you a miracle that happened right here in Ferrara that is even better," Francesco says, sidling his horse right up to Isabella's so that their legs touch. She knows she should pull away, that her mother would rail against this sort of indiscriminate physical contact, even with leather riding boots providing a barrier to the couple's much-craved intimacy, but instead, she rides with slow care so that they might continue to brush against one another.
"What miracle is that?" she asks, suppressing a smile.
"That your father agreed that you should be my wife," he answers.

A Very Enjoyable Read.......2007-09-16
As one who normally gravitates to English historical fiction, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book, but was drawn to it because of the inclusion of Leonardo da Vinci. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and the period of Italian history presented. It takes you to a different time and place with ease. After finishing the book, I find myself wanting to read more Italian historical fiction and to visit the works of Leonardo da Vinci at the Louvre. Just the kind of inspiration you hope to get from a great book!
Well done.......2007-07-16
I enjoyed this novel more than Essex's IN THE COMPANY OF A COURTESAN. Over all, the book is a well done weaving of fact and fiction. Essex is a talented writer - I thoroughly enjoy her style and ability to move the story along rather quickly. My main critisim is lack of character development and telling nuances. Just a little more heart and depth to each of the main women characters would have really made this a show stopper. In general, it read like a very visual movie and a great story that I have not read in a novel version before.
I especially enjoyed *learning* a little more about several of the lovely faces that grace Leonardo's work. I say "learning," assuming that the general story is close to the facts and conceivably possible - which seems to be the case. Mind you that I am no Italian historical biographer - I'm sure Essex took the needed literary liberty as needed. A wonderful read!
A letdown in the genre of historical fiction.......2007-06-04
This book had very little to do with the aforementioned painting and with Leonardo da Vinci in general, in which case I was let down because it turned out to be something I did not expect. Based on a true tale of Renaissance era power families in Italy, the characters seemed like mere ciphers who existed solely to report the goings on of the day. Essex seemingly couldn't decide between an historical work or historical fiction and, as a result, this book is neither. Given authors like Dunant and Gregory, historical fiction can be so much more in the hands of a gifted storyteller. This book was a disappointment through and through.
Karen takes you back to DaVinci's life and times.......2007-05-22
Very enjoyable read, a real insight to Leonardo DaVinci and his contemporaries. The characters come alive!
Leonardo's Swans.......2007-05-13
For anyone who enjoys historical fiction AND/OR is planning a trip to Milan, THIS is the book for you. The story line was easy to follow and hard to put down. The details of the Sforza Castle, of Leonardo's various works and his quirks, and the history of ruling families in Italy during the 1400's-1500's was fascinating! It honestly made my last trip to Milan much more meaningful as I almost felt I knew Isabella and the Moro. A GREAT read!

Lucy Fitzhenry didn't just wake up one morning and decide to do something stupid . . .
But when an experimental strain of chocolate that she'd developed needed testing, someone had to do it. Who knew that overindulging in her creation would turn an introverted plant lover into a wild nymphomaniac? Or that a celebration with Nick, her boss, would lead to a shocking kiss . . . and a whole lot more.
She blamed it on the chocolate. Her new discovery was supposed to have made her career. Not turn her practical, logical, normal life upside down and get her pregnant with her boss's baby! Though she and Nick butted heads at work, if their one night together was any indication, they were a great match in bed. With a little luck (and chocolate!) maybe they could turn their one-night stand into the chance of a lifetime.

Any book with the word chocolate in the title is bound to grab my attention. Thankfully, Ms. Greene's BLAME IT ON CHOCOLATE lived up to my sweet-tooth cravings! This is a story that's actually nice-in the true definition of nice-in that there are no bad guys, no cheating, no broken hearts, and a happy ending. The characters are truly believable, the dialogue is funny, and the situations this couple find themselves in are ones anyone can relate to.
Lucy Fitzhenry loves her job at Bernard Chocolates. She gets to spend her days working in the greenhouse, developing new species of plants for the company's newest brands of chocolate. She knows she's found a real winner with Bliss, and eagerly awaits the reaction of the bosses-owner Orson Bernard and his grandson, Raul Nicholas "Nick" Bernard. Lucy was right-her new plant has a direct effect on the future of Bernard Chocolates in that it could end up making them millions. When the first batch of Bliss chocolate comes off the line, Lucy decides to give it a taste test. Who knew chocolate could taste so heavenly, or that it would turn this shy woman who only fantasized about Nick Bernard in private into a sex-starved woman who lets a kiss lead to "the Night of the Chocolate." Suddenly, one wild night of passion turns into a whole lot more, when the nausea Lucy starts experiencing turns out not to be an ulcer, but a pregnancy.
Nick Bernard has always done the right thing. So when he learns that Lucy is pregnant with his child, he's determined that they'll get married. Unfortunately, the quiet, shy Lucy has a whole lot to say about marrying the boss's grandson-and none of it seems to be good. Somehow, Nick has to convince Lucy that he cares for her, that he is, in fact, falling in love with her, and wants to marry her for more than just the sake of their child. Bliss chocolate is a huge success, and Nick wants nothing more than to make his relationship with Lucy a success, too.
BLAME IT ON CHOCOLATE is, in a word, charming. A down-to-earth romance with likable characters who find themselves in a situation that many people deal with in the real world, Lucy and Nick are a couple that everyone can relate to. Nick tries so hard to be nice that he doesn't realize that Lucy needs to know he loves her, and Lucy is just naïve enough to think that what they have isn't strong enough to keep them together. All in all, BLAME IT ON CHOCOLATE is a sweet indulgence for a satisfying afternoon read.
Delicious!.......2006-10-22
This was my first book by Jennifer Greene and it made me a fan!
Lucy creates a new cocoa plant and when she tastes it's first batch of chocolate, Bliss, she knows she has a winner. She shares it with Nick, the owners grandson, and soon finds herself sleeping with him.
Later she is not feeling quite right and she blames it on the chocolate. Which is partly true, since she is pregnant from that one night of passion with Nick.
This book has a lot going for it. You have the relationship with Nick and Lucy. Also there are some secondary characters with their own issues thrown into the mix to make this and exciting story. It is fun and funny. Sweet and and exciting. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the follow up story Blame it on Cupid!
Really can't see how this is a romance.......2006-09-09
I don't get this book as a romance. Nick explains several times how he would never be interested in Lucy. She says several times how Nick would never be interested in her. I kept reading hoping that the author would make this believable when they finally get together. She never did although I learned a lot about making chocolate.
It's just no fun starting a book from the first knowing that the characters are so totally miss-matched!
Even the secondary characters are boring. Her father, a brilliant surgeon who can't do anything in the real world. A cute cousin who needs her to tell him he is not gay. Her mom who no longer is interested in her brilliant husband the surgeon.
Weird triangle between Nick's older brother & grandfather. The same story plays out with the older brother not marrying the mother of his child. Grandfather loses all respect. Nick doing the same thing with Lucy. Surely we can come up with something more original.
You will love it ! .......2006-07-25
Blame it on Chocolate by Jennifer Greene was fun romance novel. Lucy is a developer at a chocolate factory and finds her life in chaos ~ is it the new chocolate or her handsome boss? I read this book in a day and it pure chocolate bliss. If you enjoy this genre, I would also suggest, Falling For Gracie by Susan Mallery,The Care and Feeding of Unmarried Men by Christie Ridgway and Underfoot by Leanne Banks.
Bittersweet Chocolate.......2006-07-06
Lucy Fitzhenry loves her job as a horticulturist working on experimental strains of cacao plants for Bernard Chocolates. She's riding high at work after a great success in developing a cacao tree that can be grown in the company's Minnesota greenhouses. The chocolate resulting from this cacao tree is the most exquisite in the world. In order to produce enough cacao for the company to launch a new line of the gourmet chocolate, Lucy is put in charge of the building of new greenhouses and growing the new trees for the project.
While Lucy's professional life soars, her personal life flounders. In addition to loving Bernard Chocolates, Lucy also loves the owner of the company, the handsome and urbane Nick Bernard. Due to Lucy's open personality, everyone--including Nick--is painfully aware of this fact. Unfortunately, Nick doesn't return Lucy's feelings, despite a night of shared passion that occurred when they were euphoric over the development of the new chocolate. Both have tried to pretend that The Night of the Chocolate never happened, but neither is able to avoid the repercussions when Lucy discovers she is pregnant w/ Nick's baby.
Things go form bad to worse for Lucy when her parents break up and her father shows up at her door to stay. He's followed by her cousin Russell who brings his problems for Lucy to help sort out. Nick has his his share of family woes when his grandfather Orson, Lucy's number one fan, becomes enraged over the situation between Nick and Lucy. Nick is also trying to smooth over a long-standing rift between his brother and Orson.
The book has a lot going for it. The storyline about chocolate production is different and interesting. The secondary characters--including Orson, Lucy's cousin, Nick's brother, the Bernard Chocolate employees, etc.--are also likable and well-drawn. (Lucy's unappealing, self-absorbed parents are an exception.)
Ultimately, tho, I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. The biggest problem I had w/ the book was Lucy herself. She's smart, hardworking, and sweet--but I just didn't like her very much as a romantic female lead. Without a baby in the mix, it's hard for me to imagine Nick and Lucy as a long-term couple. But, this may just be a matter of personal preference. While I was disappointed in the book as a whole, there were enough positive elements (Nick, chocolate) that may appeal more to other readers.

Customer Reviews:
Please, no more "kindler, gentler" Han Solo.......2007-09-06
Ann Crispin's "Han Solo Trilogy" fills out some interesting details of the Star Wars universe. However, it lacks the edge and grittiness of some of the better Star Wars novels (particularly those by Timothy Zahn). Although Han is supposed to be a "scoundrel," you'd never know it from these books; Crispin goes out of her way to portray him as a nice, sweet guy who might enjoy an afternoon feeding ducks in the park.
"The Hutt Gambit" feels almost like a young-adult novel; the dialogue is bright and cheerful and the characters never seem to be in any serious jeopardy. If you thought Greedo shooting first was an improvement, you'll probably enjoy this.
another fantastic chapter of Han Solo's back story!.......2007-06-23
Once again Crispin delivers a fast paced, fun and informative look at the early years of everyone's favorite Star Wars scoundrel, Han Solo.
This one picks up several years after The Paradise Snare. Lots has happened to Han between the first book and this one, and lots happens during this book as well!
Without getting into many spoilers (at lest nothing that's not on the back of the jacket of the book) we see how Han meets Jabba, Chewbacca, Lando, his first flight with a very special ship, how he becomes the reluctant hero YET AGAIN..all great stuff.
In addition, there's appearances from some 'old' faces, both from the original Trilogy of movies as well as the previous book.
Great action, characterization and nods to the Star Wars Universe are all over the place in this book.
Highly recommended to any star wars fan!
Midly Entertaining.......2007-03-23
This book, though midly entertaining, is not for the old school Star Wars fans that grew up on the original Trilogy. The Han Solo Trilogy lacks the stories of a scoundrel that I expected. This trilogy also has glaring contradictions and plot holes when taken with the movies and other Star Wars books. This book is for the younger Star Wars fan, the generation that believes Greedo shot first.
Han, Chewie, and the Hutts.......2007-03-16
In this second book of the Han Solo trilogy, Ms Crispin takes us on Han's journey from his days as a cadet at the Imperial Space Academy through a number of adventures working as a pilot for the Hutts and ending up fending off an attack by Imperial forces. At the Academy, Cadet Solo spends four years preparing for a career in the Imperial Navy and developing his skills as a pilot. He graduates and spends four years as an officer before his career is cut short when he rescues a Wookie slave from ill treatment at the hands of a superior officer. The result is a dishonorable discharge. However, the Wookie, who turns out to be our old friend Chewbacca, swears a life debt to Han and promises to follow him everywhere. Obviously the entire Star Wars experience is much richer because of this incident.
Han and Chewie then move on to Nar Shaddaa, the Smugglers' Moon, where they smuggle shipments of spice to designated locations and make various runs for the Hutts, including Jabba. It is also during this period that the High Priest on Ylesia realizes that Han Solo was in fact the individual who caused them so much trouble several years earlier. He contracts with the galaxy's best bounty hunter, who else but Boba Fett, to capture Solo and return him to Ylesia to be killed. Fett's efforts to capture Han are stymied by a new character, a charming rogue named Lando Calrissian. Such introductions are the most fascinating part of learning Han Solo's backstory. Han, Chewie, Lando, Boba, Jabba - they're all here.
The Empire begins to move against the Hutts' lawless territory by authorizing Moff Sarn Shild to blockade Nal Hutta and turn the Smugglers' moon into molten slag. Through a combination of bribes, devious machinations by the Empire, and heroic deeds by Han and his fellow smugglers, the Empire's forces are thwarted. At the end of the story, Han is trying to figure out how to make money and go on with the rest of his life. His plans include coming up with enough money to go to Bespin and participate in an extremely high-stakes sabacc game. I suspect there in the third book we will run in to Lando again and learn of the acquisition of the Millennium Falcon. All of this is simply great fun as we continue to understand the forces in Han Solo's life that got him to the character he was when we first met him in A New Hope. On to the third book of the trilogy.
A great continuation of the series.......2007-01-18
I have been re-reading this trilogy for the first time in ten years. Again, the books have held up great and are just as good as they were the first time I read them.
The Hutt Gambit expands the scope of the this trilogy and begins to introduce favorite characters from the original film trilogy. While the book skips over Han Solo's days in the Imperial Navy, it picks up with explaining how and why he was drummed out of the service and introduces Chewbacca and the start of his and Han's friendship. From there we learn about Han's first exploits in smuggling and his first shot at the Kessel Run, his first meeting with Jabba the Hutt, and how he develops into the famous smuggler that will appear in A New Hope.
Ann Crispin continues to write Han Solo in a way that feels genuine and faithful to Harrison Ford's performance. The story is bigger than that of The Paradise Snare, and the cast of characters includes old favorites, some additional characters from the Expanded Universe (like some of the smugglers on Nar Shaddaa) while introducing some original characters that I thought fit in nicely, even if they were only in the book briefly, like Xaverri.
For Star Wars fans it is a must read, and for everyone else it is definitely worth the time as a fun space opera book that is easy to read but still contains genuine emotion and heart.

3 Books in One, The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, Rebel Dawn
Book Description
Here is the blockbuster trilogy that chronicles the never-before-told story of the young Han Solo. Set before the Star Wars movie adventures, these books chronicle the coming-of-age of the galaxy's most famous con man, smuggler, and thief.
The Collection includes:
The Paradise Snare
The first book in this exciting new Han Solo series begins with a recounting of Han's late teen years and shows us how he escaped an unhappy adopted home situation to carve out an adventurous new life for himself as a pilot. Han Solo, the handsome rogue, is every girl's dream man, and every boy's hero.
The Paradise Snare is another stellar Star Wars production, complete with original music and sound effects.
The Hutt Gambit
Solo is now a fugitive from the Imperial Navy. But he has made a valuable friend in a former Wookiee slave named Chewbacca, who has sworn Han a life debt. Han will need all the help he can get. For the Ylesian Hutts have dispatched the dreaded bounty hunter Boba Fett to track down the man who already outsmarted them once. But Han and Chewie find themselves in even bigger trouble when they agree to lend their services to the crime lords Jiliac and Jabba the Hutt. Suddenly the two smugglers are thrust into the middle of a battle between the might of the Empire and the treachery of their outlaw allies...a battle where even victory means death!
Rebel Dawn
The Millennium Falcon is "the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy." So when Han Solo wins it in a game of sabacc, he and Chewbacca become kings of the smugglers--uncatchable, unstoppable. But with the Empire clamping down, Han knows his luck can't last. Still, when an old girlfriend who is now the leader of an insurgent Rebel group offers him a shot at an incredible fortune, Han can't resist. The plan seems a sure thing. The resistance will be light and the take enormous. Han and his friends will divide it equally with the Rebels. Too bad for Han that the planet of Ylesia is far from a pushover, that the Rebels have an agenda of their own, and that smuggler friends can often turn into enemies...quicker than lightspeed.

Greatest Star Wars Novel Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-05
In fact this may be one of the best pieces of science fiction from the last century. Hyperbole? Perhaps. Nonethelesss, I've read the trilogy 3 times now and it's been better and better each time. If you like Star Wars this is a MUST READ! Period.

OUTSTANDING, FANTASTIC AND FUN.......2000-04-11
I do not have the tape. I have the book (book club edition that put all three books in one hard back. I remember the ending of Paradise Snare but the other two ran into each other so well - I can't say. I can say that this author did the homework and weaved in cameo appearances, bits and pieces of actions in Daley's books and ultimate result was a smashing success. I stayed up all night with Paradise Snare and (learning I need sleep I did better with the rest). It was so hard to put down and parts I would read and re-read. It was wonderful to come to this book after Phathom Menance and Vector Prime. I could enjoy the characterizations, the story and the universe. I felt like I had come home to SW again. Thanks Crispin - a fantastic job. This will be one well read and well loved book. I am going to get another copy to keep in case this one falls apart.
Great History of Han Solo.......2000-03-26
This set of books was a wonderful to read. The story of Han Solo's life before the events of episode IV explained a lot of unanswered questions. The book takes you from the time before Han went into the Imperial Academy to him walking into Episode IV. It is a great book and I recomend it to anyone that likes Star Wars.

Psychic and spiritual teacher Sylvia Browne has appeared on all the right talk shows--Montel Williams, Larry King Live, Coast to Coast with Art Bell, and Unsolved Mysteries, to name only a few--touting her bestselling books Adventures of a Psychic and The Other Side and Back. Find out what all the ruckus is about in Book I of her Journey of the Soul series. Browne primarily channels through her spiritual guide, Francine, but she occasionally treats readers with insights from her "psychic grandmother" Ada. Together they talk about subjects ranging from meditation to reincarnation in three separate, thought-provoking sections. Founder of The Society of Novus Spiritus, a church based upon Christian Gnostic theology in Campbell, California, Browne introduces the book with a prayer, hoping that "the new spirit of enlightenment will rise out of all guilt and fear"--a worthy intention that signals the astonishing array of topics touched on in the 228 pages of this book.
Book Description
This is book 1 of the Journey of the Soul series. Sylvia says this journey is an odyssey, and is probably the most glorious journey you will ever take -- a spiritual banquet of knowledge that will fill your soul with realization and truth. Some of the subjects are: meditation, reincarnation, soulmates, etc.

Enlightenment.......2007-09-09
I found this book very informative. It anwered many of my questions on god and the creation. Now everything seems to fit into place for me.I am sharing this book with my 14 yr old grandaughter. We have recently found out that she is an empath and has psychic capabilites. The more information we can get to her the easier it will be for her to process her abilities.Sylvia rights so the average reader and seeker can understand. Loved It and have purchased the series.
Uplifting.......2007-03-27
Since I find organized religion to be stiffling and over repressive I became very removed from it. Having found Sylvia and her writings I have become so much closer to God and myself. Her explainations of life and death come so much closer to what I have believed all of my life, it is so refreshing to think that all that she says can be true and it all sounds more plausible to me than anything else I have read or been told. I do know that the positive impact her writings have had on my life are undeniable.
An eye opener.......2005-01-21
I was blown away reading this book. I have become a voracious reader, gobbling up everything I can get my hands on to grow spiritually. This book is easy to read, and Sylvia, along with her spirit guide, takes time to help the reader understand exactly the point she is trying to make. If anyone desires answers, or feels what they have been told is not the entire truth, I would suggest this book. It's fast to read and a pleasure.
There are some flaws.......2004-12-23
This book was very interesting, it helped me to think about my own spiritual beliefs. The book contains a lot of information, and at times it is very strangely put together and difficult to understand. Sometimes things are repeated but in a different way, so you are not sure if she is contradicting herself or if you just don't understand it. I found it rather strange that she talks about how religion tells you some people are bad and some are good, when in reality we are all God's children....and then she says that there are "dark" and "white" entities. Apparently, the dark entities can never become white. I don't understand how they even became dark in the first place. She also talks about certain things you must do to become "lighter", and you must accept Azna "into your heart." Sounds a lot like organized religion to me. There are also a lot of strange New Age rituals they tell you to do, even though they claim rituals are just a part of dogma.
This book may be somewhat accurate, but from what I read, it is not completely.
Bible Thumpers Listen Up.......2004-08-11
If you believe in the bible, then you must not be so close minded that you don't realize that not all books of the bible are contained in the bible. The Catholic religion has admitted to taking out books due to "the people" not needing the info. The important left out books contained info. on after life's and psycic abilites. Go and rent the movie DOGMA and learn that is the idea of God that keeps the world alive not the belief. A belief such as you have is dangerous and keeps you close minded. Our god loves all people and is NOT judging the way you think he will. Good luck and I hope your mind opens up And you stop judging others like YOUR BIBLE says not to. Think about that.
