Japan's most widely-read and controversial writer, author of A Wild Sheep Chase, hurtles into the consciousness of the West with this narrative about a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters--not to mention Bob Dylan and Lauren Bacall.

3 out of 5 stars (3.5): Classic Murakami, but not without faults.......2007-10-09

I have read most of Murakami's work and continue to believe that he is one of the best and most imaginative writers today. His storylines are always inventive and have a way of sucking you in. "Hard-Boiled..." is no different in that respect. Here we have a story shrouded in mystery about a narrator who works as a Calcutec, a computer programmer of sorts, for the System, a government-type organization that controls computers and the exchange of information. The Protagonist finds himself at the center of a war between the System and the Factory, a second organization trying to gain control of the way information is transferred. The plotline alternates back and forth between the protagnoist's search to figure out his own importance in this information and technological war and an alternate universe (so to speak) where people are separated from their shadows and live in a place only referred to as The Town. As the story drives forward, the two plotlines converge and eventually blend into one another. As is the case with all of his work, he draws you in with such ease and you read the book as effortlessly as you would the newspaper, only with much more urgency and excitement.

My major problem with the text was the vagueness of the world he sets out. I understood that the mystery surrounding the characters was necessary given the unknown frontiers of the mind that the book aims to explore, but the world and the war between factions doesn't have enough meat to it to grip you as some of the other worlds Murakami has created have been able to. There was something missing, a visual element, that made it very hard to feel some of the tension and suspense he was building.

So this is a good book, but not Murakami's best. I would say that anyone could read it and enjoy it, but there are better things out there if you have a limited time and/or budget to spend on fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-09-10

This was my first Murakami book and it was the one that got me hooked on this amazing author. The story is simply amazing. The way he managed to tie everything together in the end was masterful.

I love the way his characters are all quirky and a little strange in their own right. Each of their own little quirkiness that adds such color to their characters.

I still have not finished all his books, but you can be sure I will!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tale of Wonderland.......2007-08-30

I loved this novel, the third by Murakami that I have read. Since marrying my wife, I have discovered that there is a lot to be treasured in modern literature, and that such a genre exists with much greater depth and breadth than I had thought. It is nice to see that I was wrong.

While this novel is not as cerebral as Norweigan Wood and Kafka on the Shore, it was a very nice book and well worth reading.

I will not go into unnecessary detail about the plot; others have. I will merely comment upon my thoughts.

For example, I found certain aspects of this novel somewhat frustrating. There is too much of a "That's just the way it is" feel about the book. This can work, if the author lays the groundwork and then ties together the threads, such that the end result is such a beautiful and overwhelming conclusion that you have no other recourse but amazement and awe.

I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the novel, but not amazed or awed. So, it was somewhat disheartening to finish the book. Not that it was, in any way, a disappointing ending. Rather, it was sobering and sad. It was not a book that I wanted to end so soon.

The end was good, but I disliked the choice of the unnamed narrator. My wife and I actually had a long discussion about this. My personal interpretation was that his choice was selfish and that he was choosing to void his responsibilities and choose hedonism. My wife thought that he was doing completely the opposite. It is only when you read a novel that you can discuss that you realize that there is such a sparse landscape of rich and bounteous literature out there.

When asked what this novel was like, I compared it to snow falling all around you while you walk through a silent town on a holiday evening, alone, and somber. The wonder of the feeling and the solitude of that feeling and experience.

Purchase it, read it, relish it, and pass it on. It is well worth the time and the cost. I know that I am going to be purchasing more Murakami books. If you are like me, you read a lot of books of varying quality. I have resolved to keep a fresh Murakami on hand, so that when I get disillusioned I can recall the beauty of modern literature. If you are like me, grab this. It's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Entering a dream sequence.......2007-08-02

This book put me in one of those beautiful places were you can feel the connectivity of everything. After the first 3 chapters I couldn't put it down. I've read alot of Murakami since but this is still my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Japanese lit. at its best..........2007-08-02

You have to take your time with this and all of Murakami's stuff. This had a lot of different elements blended in together (sci-fi, kappas- which are rarely written about anymore, and most of all good ole detective work by the character and the reader) and it works pretty well. I wonder if anyone else noticed the correlation between the city and town chapters and the use of the left and right side of the brain. The map in the front of the book also looks like a brain...

Naive and shockingly innocent, Lady Jessica Charteris tricked a rugged, handsome stranger into a marriage in name only in order to escape a union with a vile British lord. Totally unprepared for the hardships awaiting her in America, she is terrified by the prospect of life in the harsh and magnificent land at the edge of the Rockies. But even more frightening is Wolfe himself –– a man whose raw sensuality leaves her breathless. 4 out of 5 stars Memorable Romance.......2007-05-26

I read this book awhile ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The memory of it has stayed with me. It was the first of Ms.Lowell books that I read and because of it I discovered a truly talented author. I won't go into the details of the book because others have but I must say that the story was great and the characters were very well written.

If you like medieval romances I would also recommend "Forbidden" by Ms. Lowell.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzling Page Turner.......2007-02-11

This is my first Elizabeth Lowell book, and I'm very impressed! This is truly a sizzling page turner of a novel. It may not be a literary classic, but it will entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I loved it. (There were a few typos, a few mix ups of words and names, but I guess that happens.) It could have been edited down by about 10-percent easily - but it was still very good. It warmed up a very cold February night - and it was so interesting that I read it straight through in one very long sitting. :) So kudos to the author.

4 out of 5 stars Order the other two........2007-01-24

This is the second book I've read in the Only Series and I've ordered the other two. I love the the strong women she writes about and the pages keep turning.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time keepers.......2006-07-29

This book is on my keeper shelf at home.

This is a story based on misunderstanding and personal demons that drive both Wolfe and Jessi to fear the worst. Wolfe's sin is to push Jessi harder and harder away, and Jessi's sin is to never trust him with her personal demon though she started it all by reaching out for him alone.

I've read this story many times. By the time I get to the breaking point scene when Jessi finally names her demon I am in tears. It is written with such ferocity and realism that you are shaken. It's frustrating to spend so long building up to that revelation, but that also adds the terror and turmoil.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-03-26

It was hard to like either of these characters. Wolfe was such a jerk to Jesse, except for the last few chapters and Jesse was a pathetic heroine. Wolfe didn't care if she married Lord Gore or any other man, as long as it wasn't him. A little jealousy or possessiveness in the beginning on his part would have been comforting. And couldn't Jesse have made a living as a seamstress or something in America and not have to trap Wolf into marriage? The last three pages had a nice happy ending, but I wish that Jesse had made Wolf suffer a little more for all the torment that he put her through.

Book Description

Bigger, better, and more is how the world determines who is special and who is not. It’s a message kids hear every day. But it’s not God’s message.

Just like Punchinello, we all want to fit in—to be accepted by the crowd. But at times that may mean either looking and acting like others or risking being rejected.

God’s truth is simple and unchanging, reminding us that it’s not what we have that counts, but whose we are. This is a truth the lovable Wemmick, Punchinello, hears again at the knee of Eli, his creator.

Punchinello’s hard-learned lessons show us how important it is to be who we were created to be, and why that matters. Let the two wonderful tales You Are Mine and If Only I Had a Green Nose—as 2 Books in 1—help you remember these important things: you were made the way you are for a reason, and there is Someone who will always help you be you—wonderfully you.

Product Description

South India. Early 1940s. Sita, a poor, illiterate girl, is given as a child bride to a boy with a dark secret that threatens to bring shame upon his family. Finding herself in a marriage without intimacy, she struggles to transcend her circumstances. She learns to read and weave, finding joy and solace at her loom and release in a brief, forbidden relationship. Yet, alongside her fame as a weaver of tapestries, Sita’s anger and frustration grow as she feels thwarted within the confines of her family life. Then a roll of events, in which she participates, ends with a grave tragedy and a complete unraveling of her spirit. In middle age, she migrates to America to care for her brother’s motherless children who, as they enter adulthood, are fraught with their own conflicts of identity and culture. Nearing death in old age, she asks herself: ‘What has my life been worth? What lessons can be drawn from it?’ Spanning two generations and two cultures, this book is a deeply affecting story rich in character and incident. As the American writer Eudora Welty said, “It parts a curtain, that invisible shadow that falls between people, the veil of indifference to each other’s presence, each other’s wonder, each other’s human plight.”

4 out of 5 stars Crossing the cultural divide - poignant, riveting!.......2007-07-22

I just finished reading Only the Eyes are Mine and it is an amazing novel. I found it deep, riveting, disturbing, warm, uncomfortable, familiar, strange and beautifully written.
It is one of those novels that crosses the cultural divide between India and the USA by being grounded in "of India in both cultures" fluently.
It also grapples with diversity in a stark and quite "in-your-face" way yet stays an engaging story, terrific stuff.

Since finishing it I have recommended it to friends, some Indian, some ABCDs (of whom there are some at work or some who are married to some) and others including my family.
I have no hesitation in recommending it here to all and sundry!

4 out of 5 stars Humane, poignant - and a darn good read!.......2007-06-19

I picked up this book because someone recommended it. I browsed through it soon after it arrived. Afew hours later, I found I'd browsed all the way to the end. It's a fast, compelling read.

The book draws you into the life of Sita, a poor woman with big dreams. It reminded me of an Indian, fictionalized version of "Angela's Ashes" in its poignancy and authenticity.

Married as a child to a man who doesn't love her, Sita ends up in Northern California where her niece is planning her own wedding to a man she doesn't love. In between, there is love, hate, fear, violent death, misery, resignation, and joy, all told with an empathy that resonates, and a plot that pulls one along and made it difficult to put down the book.

I'd recommend this novel to anyone interested in human drama, and to readers of Indian novelists such as Jhumpa Lahiri or Chitra Divakaruni.

It's published by a small Indian house. I found Amazon the easiest way to find this book.

3 out of 5 stars Only the eyes are mine.......2006-03-07

The story starts out fine. However the ending did not seem right as the logic for the sudden change in heart was not clear. I think there was too much generalization and stereotyping. Overall an enjoyable novel.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and poignant story narrated beautifully !.......2005-12-28

Only the Eys are Mine draws the reader in right away and keeps them engaged till the last page is read. The interlacing of two stories is as beautifully executed as young Sita's exquisite weaving.

Usha has created a heartfelt and vivid portrait of Babu's relationship with his kids and his struggles with reconciling his new life and times with that of his youth.

5 out of 5 stars Only The Eyes Are Mine by Usa Alexander is wonderful!.......2005-12-05

I just finished reading this wonderful book. Immediately the main character pulled me in. The writing is well done, the transitions smooth from one time period to another. I think this book would make an excellent gift for someone who likes romance and enjoys learning a bit about other cultures.

I hope to see more by this author.

Don't even think about reading House Harkonnen without reading its predecessor Dune: House Atreides; anyone who does so risks sinking in the sands between Frank Herbert's original Dune and this prequel trilogy by Herbert's son, Brian, and Kevin J. Anderson. The purist argument that had Frank Herbert wanted to go backwards he would have done so is, at least in part, negated by the sheer narrative verve, and by the fact that Anderson and Brian Herbert manage to pull some genuine surprises out of this long-running space-opera. House Harkonnen is a massive book, and there are places where it becomes plot heavy, but in following the story of Duke Leto Atreides and the conflicts with House Harkonnen, the authors succeed in spinning a gripping adventure while going off in some unexpected directions. Anderson, who has written many successful Star Wars novels, has noted his particular admiration for The Empire Strikes Back, and his desire to emulate that film's dark take on the genre. In House Harkonnen, the conflict encompasses the tragedy of nuclear war, marked by grief and horror, vengeance and torment, and all while the complex intrigues continue to unfold. As one character puts it:

Everything has its cost. We pay to create our future, we pay for the mistakes of the past. We pay for every change we make--and we pay just as dearly if we refuse to change.

Ultimately this is the theme of a compelling game of consequences, choices, and responsibility, a study of Leto's growth into power and the price of politics and love. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

                  Book Description

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson return to the vivid universe of Frank Herbert’s Dune, bringing a vast array of rich and complex characters into conflict to shape the destiny of worlds....

As Shaddam sits at last on the Golden Lion Throne, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen plots against the new Emperor and House Atreides — and against the mysterious Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit. For Leto Atreides, grown complacent and comfortable as ruler of his House, it is a time of momentous choice: between friendship and duty, safety and destiny. But for the survival of House Atreides, there is just one choice — strive for greatness or be crushed.

Fifty-six hard years after the events of The Machine Crusade, after the death of Serena Butler, the bloodiest decades of the Jihad take place. The human worlds begin to hope that the end of the centuries-long conflict with the thinking machines is finally in sight. Unfortunately, Omnius has one last, deadly card to play. In a last-ditch effort to destroy humankind, virulent plagues are let loose throughout the galaxy, decimating the populations of whole planets. The war that has lasted many lifetimes will be decided in the apocalyptic Battle of Corrin. In the greatest battle of science fiction history, human and machine face off one last time, and on the desert planet of Arrakis, the legendary Fremen of Dune become the feared fighting force to be discovered by Paul Maud'Dib in Frank Herbert's classic, Dune.

                                    Book Description

Written by distinguished historians of science and religion, the thirty essays in this volume survey the relationship of Western religious traditions to science from the beginning of the Christian era to the late twentieth century. This wide-ranging collection also introduces a variety of approaches to understanding their intersection, suggesting a model not of inalterable conflict, but of complex interaction.

Tracing the rise of science from its birth in the medieval West through the scientific revolution, the contributors describe major shifts that were marked by discoveries such as those of Copernicus, Galileo, and Isaac Newton and the Catholic and Protestant reactions to them. They assess changes in scientific understanding brought about by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century transformations in geology, cosmology, and biology, together with the responses of both mainstream religious groups and such newer movements as evangelicalism and fundamentalism. The book also treats the theological implications of contemporary science and evaluates recent approaches such as environmentalism, gender studies, social construction, and postmodernism, which are at the center of current debates in the historiography, understanding, and application of science.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for those interested in religion & science .......2005-08-22

As one who has read several books on science and religion, this book (edited by Ferngren) ranks high; currently one of the best. It contains a very good compilation of articles on historical and philosophical issues related to science and religion. The articles are from knowledgeable and respected history of science scholars such as Richard Westfall and John Hedley Brooke.

Overall, it is well written, easy to follow, and insightful. It covers many of the important issues and more. Scholars in this field will find the wide variety of topics infromative. It is also a good reference book. I repeatedly use the chapter on Galileo Galilei in one of my college classes. The students enjoy reading it and always learn something new.

Highly recommended for those interested in history, science & religion.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Up-To-Date Historical Studies.......2003-09-30

What struck me about this book was its clear departure from the Science vs. Religion stereotype that one encounters in some older histories. Most of the work contained in this volume comes from historical studies performed during the last thirty years.

Most of the scholars who have contributed to this anthology adopt a Complexity Thesis to account for the historical relation between science and religion - as opposed to a Warfare model or other military metaphors which were popular in late Victorian anti-clerical literature.

It's refreshing reading for anyone whose understanding of science and religion has been influenced by, say, Prometheus Press.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and clearly written.......2003-08-23

wow! The scope of this book, and the clarity of each of the articles, is fascinating. I haven't read something this good in a long, long time. Each of the essays is densely packed with lots of insights on the ever-growing realm of people, ideas and how they relate to science and religion.
The articles are fairly short, 3-5 pages. Yet each article is packed with references if you're really interested. What i enjoyed was learning the names of the many philosophers and scientists in this field. I'm interested in science (trained as one at University), and I spend too much time thinking about religion. I guess i'm not the only one.
                                    It's a perfect overview.

                                      Book Description

Judaism and Science canvases three millennia of Jewish attitudes towards nature and its study. It answers many questions about the complex relationship of religion and science. How did religious attitudes and dogmas affect Jewish attitudes towards natural knowledge? How was Jewish interest in science reflected, and was facilitated by, links with other cultures - Egypt and Assyria and Babylon in ancient times, Moslem culture in medieval times, and Christian culture during the Renaissance and since? How did science serve as a bridge between religious communities that were otherwise estranged and embattled? How did science serve as a vehicle of assimilation into the wider intellectual culture in which Jews found themselves? The book considers the attitudes and work of particular Jews in different epochs. It takes an "eagle's-eye view" of its subject, considering broad themes from a high vantage, but also swooping down to consider particular individuals at high focus, and in detail. Judaism and Science encompasses the entire history of the interaction of Jews and natural knowledge. BLPart I: The Sages of Israel and Natural Wisdom describes the images of nature and natural philosophy in the two most important sets of books on the Jewish bookshelf: the Biblical corpus and the Talmudic/Early Rabbinic corpus

                                        Book Description

Conventional approaches to Hinduism typically stress its classical religious tradition with an emphasis on the Brahmin texts and practices. Frequently neglected are the practices of lower caste Indians, the role of women in the culture, the religious life of village folk, devotion to the deity Rama, and the Sant tradition of North India.

The Many Colors of Hinduism is the first introductory text to provide a balanced view of this rich religious tradition, acknowledging the full range of its many competing and even contradictory aspects. Utilizing a thematic-historical approach, Carl Olson draws on a wide array of textual evidence, the fieldwork of anthropologists in close contact with insiders, and voices of thinkers ranging from Indologist Alf Hiltebeitel to Cambridge scholar Julius Lipner. The result is a narrative approach that offers a view of Hinduism that emulates the storytelling nature of the religion itself.

Covering ancient times to the present and explaining important cultural metaphors, symbols, and narratives not generally found in other introductory textbooks, Olson offers students a new perspective of a religion that is more varied than most Westerners realize. The Many Colors of Hinduism will be essential reading for undergraduate courses in world or Asian religions.

                                            Book Description

The scientific approach to the study of religion predates sociology by two centuries. It arises from the need (perceived by figures as intellectually diverse as Galileo, Descartes, and Spinosa) to free religious studies from fideist and ideological claims. The classical authors mapped out the field; the project has continued successively down to contemporary schools of thought.

This book aims at bridging the divide between European and North American scholars through a careful retrieval of their common theoretical and research interests and the adoption of an international perspective that goes beyond the framework of western theology. Cipriani provides a critical analysis of both classical thought and the contemporary currents in the field, together with a well-documented presentation of the most significant European and North American authors. While this historical introduction to sociology of religion offers a scientific perspective in depth, it is also a very readable text aimed both at experts and students. Rather than detach theories from the various authors who devised them, it offers brief intellectual biographies as a vehicle for articulating their achievements and failings. As a result, the interplay of reciprocal suggestions and influences becomes more visible. Moreover, the volume provides an exhaustive synoptic outline, with eight tables interspersed chronologically, and an ample bibliography that will help with further research.
