Book Description
"Ignorant boys, killing each other," is just about all Nathan Coulter would tell his wife, friends, and family about the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. Life carried on for the community of Port William, Kentucky, as some boys returned from the war and the lives of others were mourned. In her seventies, Nathan's wife, Hannah, has time now to tell of the years since the war. In Wendell Berry's unforgettable prose, we learn of the Coulter's children, of the Feltners and Branches, and how survivors "live right on."
Customer Reviews:
Like a novelized poem.......2007-07-17
I don't always agree with Berry. Sometimes I agree with his dianoses but wonder what practical solution there is for the problems he notices. But one thing I must say is that he is able to beautifully capture the pathos and wonder of human community. Quite simply this is a beautiful meditation on life and relationship. If you do not come away longing for or at least pondering community and what it means you may want to check you pulse. His descriptions of married life are sublime.
A few random questions I have as I read the Port William novels:
-What would happen if an Italian immigrant moved to Port William? Would they be welcome?
-What is evil? Would you ever want to just kick someone out because they were so bad?
-Should I just let the effect of the novel wash over me or should I respond to a larger message?
review of Hannah Coulter.......2007-06-26
Wendell Berry is one of the finest, most thoughtful writers in America today. I count on every one of his books -- novels, short stories, essays, and poetry -- to be thought provoking and superbly written. "Hannah Coulter" was absolutely up to his high standard.
Prose as poetry.......2007-05-18
Wendell Berry is a wonderful writer. Due to his training as a poet, his prose often reads like poetry with every word in its proper place. "Hannah Coulter" is a soft-spoken narrative of the life of a small village woman who loves the land and people that she is so close to. It is a novel about change from life before WWII to life after WWII. Berry has captured it well. He points out that not all the change has been beneficial.
What seems to be an agrarian literary work has universality, because everyone is touched by love, grief and death the way Hannah was touched, whether he lives on Fifth Avenue in New York City or on Elm Street in Port William, Kentucky.
It is a gentle book of deep meaning for people who realize they are living in a hectic age, without the roots they lost among the years. Less introspective readers will simply wonder what the author was smoking.
Too much love?.......2007-04-30
This is my first Wendell Berry novel, and I've been told that perhaps this is not the right place to start. I can agree with the other reviewers that his writing acheives the tone of ths spoken word, and often I simply forgot that I was reading and instead seemed to be listening to the narrator. On the other hand, reading the book is a little like listening to someone blissed-out on prozac. There is simply too much love and when there is hardship (especially with respect to her relationship with her children), it is dismissed with a rather cold acknowledgment that sometimes life is hard. I enjoyed the book but it lacked a certain tension that really grips the attention.
I am speechless!.......2007-02-19
What can I say that other reviews have not already said so beautifully? This precious book touched my heart in many many ways. I will never forget Hannah and her family and the people that touched her life. This author has a way with words that I have not seen in the hundreds of other books that I have read. I can't wait to read more & just hope that they can come close to the beauty of this book.

Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell returns to the splendor of medieval Scotland in this first novel of her new trilogya saga of clan warfare, divided loyalties, and forbidden love. Here, in the Scottish highlands of the 15th century, a powerful knight meets his match in a mysterious beauty bent on revenge
When destiny brought Sir Balfour Murray and his wounded brother down the same road as Maldie Kirkaldy, she offered her services as a nurse even as she tried to deny the desire this dark-eyed knight had ignited at first sight. Soon they discover that they both share a mission of vengeance, but Maldie cannot tell him her true identityto do so would brand her a spy
Sworn to avenge his family as chief of the Doncoill Clan, Balfour vows to destroy his greatest foe, with Maldie at his side. Yet Balfour knows that he can no more afford to trust her than he can ignore his lust for this sultry beauty. Now, he is not only determined to unearth her deepest secrets, but also to pursue his passion for her. And nothing will stand in his way

I can see why some folks don't like these simple scottish books. That's the style used in all her books. They have to grow on ya, I think. LOL
This is Balfour Murray and Maldie Kirkaldy's story.
Balfour is Erics son...
They meet on the road and journey together.
I liked the story. Nice. The writing style of this author may not be for everyone...
I hate books written with a phony scottish brogue!.......2007-07-03
Why is it that some authors need to make us work at trying to figure out what the characters are saying? I am looking for story to enjoy. A book that I can curl up with. Instead I get a book that is hard to read. Ms. Howell is infamous for doing this. Please stop.
Another great read........2006-02-26
With the love of the Highlands of the past, this is just another one to add to the collection as I found all of this author's books. Romantic, strong willed characters, with passion for life this one is true to form, leaves you with the wanting of more to complete each players life. Can't wait for the next one.
A good introduction to the family (Murray Brothers #1).......2005-04-29
The year is 1430 and we are introduced to the Murray clan, headed by Balfour Murray, the laird of Donncoill. After hearing the news that the family enemy, Sir William Beaton, captured his younger brother Eric, he sets out to Dubhlinn intent on getting Eric back. But when they are met by defeat, they head home planning another attack when a woman steps out on the road. When she offers to tend to his brother Nigel's wounds, he finds that she had a real gift of healing and offered his hospitality in return for nursing his brother back to recovery.
Maldie Kirkcaldy knows that Balfour's kindness would change had he known of her true identity. However, seeing that they are both intent on exacting vengeance from Beaton, and knowing that she could use some shelter and food while planning her revenge, she journeys back to Donncoill with the Murrays, even though she is aware that Balfour's interest in her goes beyond her healing skills for deep down, she is also aware of her shared attraction with the laird and it doesn't take long before she finds herself disgusted by her weakness to his seduction.
Soon the passion they share lead to deeper feelings for each other. But in spite of their growing love, both are tormented by their secrets and doubts. Balfour knows that Maldie isn't exactly who she claims to be and he is intent on knowing the secrets of the elusive and skittish woman who has captured his heart. Maldie on the other hand is torn between revealing the truth to Balfour and risking everything they had shared, while still planning to fulfill the vow she had made to her dying mother. And when his suspicions of her betrayal forced her to escape and rescue Eric to prove her innocence, Balfour soon realizes his mistakes and now seeks another victory: Maldie's heart.
Although it lacks the humor of the other books in the Highland series, Highland Destiny features good leads and secondary characters. Balfour is not your typical alpha-male for he is plagued with insecurities about his looks and even feels threatened by his brother, Nigel, who also falls in love with Maldie thus adding to a bit of competition. And Maldie isn't your usual well-bred lady having been born illegitimate and having endured a harsh life with a bitter mother who nearly forced her to a life of prostitution.
HIGHLAND DESTINY is the first in Hannah Howell's trilogy set in medieval Scotland featuring the Murray brothers. Filled with deceit, misunderstandings and passion, it is a good introduction to the Murray brothers who would surely capture your heart. The other two books are HIGHLAND HONOR featuring Nigel and HIGHLAND PROMISE with Eric.
Lost interest.......2004-08-28
I got thru less than half of the book. Too much Scottish dialog. Hard to follow story. Had to keep stopping to figure out what author is trying to say. I probably will not finish this book.

Book Description
From the master of alternate history comes an epic of the second Civil War. It was an epoch of glory and success, of disaster and despair. . . .
1881: A generation after the South won the Civil War, America writhed once more in the bloody throes of battle. Furious over the annexation of key Mexican territory, the United States declared total war against the Confederate States of America in 1881.
But this was a new kind of war, fought on a lawless frontier where the blue and gray battled not only each other but the Apache, the outlaw, the French, and the English. As Confederate General Stonewall Jackson again demonstrated his military expertise, the North struggled to find a leader who could prove his equal. In the Second War Between the States, the times, the stakes, and the battle lines had changed--and so would history. . .

A good read but definite shortcomings.......2007-01-12
It takes a while to get used to the format of this book. Several characters have their own separate stories, and every 5 pages or so it jumps from one to another. After a couple of hundred pages you get used to it. But then there are the characters used in the book which I didn't understand: Lincoln and Custer are alive, Douglass does little but grouse about how he is treated different than a White man (well DUH! This is the 19th century), and Roosevelt wants nothing more than to "enjoy" a good war or two. Sam Clemens is for some unknown reason still living in the Bay area instead of traveling to Hawaii as a writer for the newspaper. None of these incongruities are explained in any manner; they're presented without any background at all, something which makes the book more science-fiction than alternative history.
The final 100 pages is nearly a total waste; complete anticlimax. The war is just about over so all that is left is 100 pages of tying up loose ends, including a really stupid "chapter" in which Roosevelt gets laid by a stranger. Can you say "editing"?
As someone who enjoys history and historic novels, I liked it but it could have been better.
Perhaps the best of the master of alternative histories.......2006-10-14
Harry Turtledove is the master of alternative history. In this continuation of the series of "what if" novels, where the Confederacy and Union divide to become two new North American countries, he may have produced the best in that series. It was a delightful read and kept me on the edge of my seat. The story is so convincing and so much of it based on what did happen that you are hardpressed at times to determine where the real history ends and the alternative history begins. Longstreet, Custer, Lincoln, they're all here doing what they would have done had history taken just a slight detour. Sit down with a cool glass of lemonade and enjoy, you won't want to put it down.
A FirstRate "What-If Book".......2006-08-02
Not a Sequel to "The Guns of the South" I was at first disappointed. However being a fine story in its own right, this is still a good read.
Do not read this book!.......2006-05-01
Yes, this book is an enjoyable alt-history read, full of colorful characters of the time. The problem is that once you've read it, you will feel compelled to read the Great War Series (3 books), and then American Front series (3 more books.) 'How Few Remain' is the best of the bunch and then there is a steady, but not precipitous, decline with each new book. In these books, there are the movers and shakers, and those that are moved and shaken. Early on, there is a good mix, but with each subsequent book, the movers/shakers decline, while the less compelliing moved/shaken dominate. I will admit that I have not yet read the last book in the 'American Front' series, but it will be hard pressed to justify the 5 preceding books. If you must, go ahead and read this book, but then STOP!
worst of the series.......2006-03-10
Okey i have to admit that i read the American Front and American Empire books before i read this one but how much does that really matter.this book is prety good but lets keep it real folks, it was no where near as good as Turtledoves other books in the series.the premis is simple, the south one the war(that really sucks)and are now free. when they decide to buy key mexicn provinces sonora and chihuahue(dont ask me to prenounce that)the U.S. declars war. what makes this book worse than Turtledoves other works is that is the their are only three characters in the whole book that are in the fighting, the rest are just on the sidelines watching from a distance. Two of thoes characters, Custer and Roosvelt, hardly see any fighting at all while the other is stuck fighting indians and small bands of "damn yankees" in new mexico. we never get a first hand acount of the battles in Louville and in Main. Thies first hand acounts are what made Turtledoves Great War books so great. only read this book if your a fan of turtledove or are a big history fan. if you want to read the southern victory series do what i did and start at The Great WaR;American Front.

T.D. Jakes's insights and expressions are balm for every woman's soul. As he explains so compassionately, we have lost sight of "the lady," and it is a loss that continues to buffet women and misdirect men. Jakes eschews condemnation and exposes the lies that have cloaked women in sorrow, helping women to stand in the beauty, strength, and confidence God intended.
Bishop Jakes, church founder, pastor, and author of numerous books, including the bestselling Woman, Thou Art Loosed!, structures this book in three parts. In the first, he gently takes the hand of every woman who has been ill-used, crippled in the innermost being, and shows her what is truly beautiful about the feminine. In part two, he opens the door for communication between husband and wife, lover and friend. Part three brings alive the passion of the Lord for women, this most exquisite of His creations.
Much has been lost. Weep with Bishop Jakes over the pain to which women have succumbed. But loss is not forever. In fact, any woman reading this book will likely feel something emerge within her, something long forgotten but something that rings of truth. --Ann Weinheimer
Book Description
The phenomenal bestseller. At last, in trade paperback...
Here is the book that brought Bishop T.D. Jakes to the forefront of America's bestselling Christian authors. Selling over half a million copies in hardcover alone, The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord is as provocative as it is profound--a truly inspiring volume that shows today's women how to improve their relationships with their men, their God, and themselves. In a society that asks women to be perfect, sweet, sexy, submissive, and pristine, T.D. Jakes offers a spiritual path that cuts through the mixed messages and leads women toward the true self God wants them to be: strong, loving, and real.
"Bishop T.D. Jakes is a breath of fresh air....Take it from me, the material within this book does make a difference." --Natalie Cole
"He demonstrates an unusual ability to inspire, uplift, teach, and comfort. An eloquent wordsmith...[he] writes with an abundance of memorable metaphors and yet speaks to women's hearts in practical, often humorous terms....This masterful preacher offers all women sound advice and gentle, respectful encouragement." --Publishers Weekly

The Lady.......2007-08-12
Awesome Book! A must read for those of us searching for a deeper relationship with our Savior! Highly Recommended!!!!
Amazingly Insightful.......2007-04-04
T.D Jakes has written a book that every woman should read. Each page gives tremendous insights into the needs of a woman. Quite surprising to me, was that it was written by a man. I believe though that he was inspired by God - the Creator of women.
I have bought several copies to give to women I minister to from prison. There are golden nuggets within each page which will bring insight, love and healing to the reader. It's a good read for men, but may be a bit hard to understand all the emotion that is involved within it's pages.
I cried often and when I finished the book, I felt loved by God.
Good book for any woman.......2007-01-11
This was a really good, easy-reading book. It's surprisingly insightful being written by a man. It's a book that speaks to the single woman hoping for a mate, as well as the married woman. I gives insight on how to understand how men think and feel and what they need, as well as how women feel. It challenges us to understand why we're have broken hearts and disappointments and how to become more whole.
YOU GOTTA READ IT.......2005-08-18
I cant imagine going through life as a woman without having read this book. I have read this book over and over again and I have given it out to my girlfriends as birthday gifts. Every woman just has to have it on their shelf-next to the bible.
The book is going to change my life !.......2004-07-09
I got this book yesterday from a friend and I have only just read the introduction and T.D Jakes described me and the story of my life in a few sentences - It was amazing! I know I am going to love this book; for this book was wirtten for me...and it contains important messages tailor-made for me...So I suggest that you get this book too and it will speak directly to you too!
