Goodnight Nobody is bestselling author Jennifer Weiner's attempt at writing a mystery, with a healthy dose of the author's chick lit sensibilities thrown in for good measure. While this Desperate Housewives meets Sex in the City murder mystery won't make readers shake in their Manolo Blahniks, it will provide the obligatory humor and compassion to which fans of Weiner's Good in Bed, In Her Shoes, and Little Earthquakes have grown accustomed.

Kate Klein is a feisty, charmingly insecure Connecticut housewife who trades in a life of late-night karaoke sing-a-longs and West Village brunches with her best friend Janie for a world of mini-vans and Mommy and Me pilates classes. Life in Upchurch, Connecticut, heats up when Kate discovers picture-perfect wife and mother Kitty Cavanaugh dead on the pickled maple hardwood floor of her recently remodeled kitchen. A former chronicler of celebrity gossip, Kate takes it upon herself to solve the mystery of Kitty's murder and the disappearance of Lexi Hagen-Holdt, another Upchurch supermom. Along the way, the mysteries and disappointments in Kate's personal life begin to unravel, including her marriage to the kind-yet-uptight Ben, and her unresolved crush on Evan McKenna, a former neighbor with whom a one-night tryst ended in disaster. Thrown in for comic relief, and perhaps to show the depth of Weiner's talents as a writer, are Kate's twin boys and adorably sophisticated 5-year old daughter Sophie ("Sophie was sitting on the toilet, applying lipstick and waiting her turn...").

Goodnight Nobody is chock full of plot twists and turns which can be overwhelming and superfluous. However, Weiner's charm and grace are usually enough to rescue readers from these moments of confusion, and reaffirm our commitment to this endearing contemporary voice. --Gisele Toueg

Book Description

For Kate Klein, a semi-accidental mother of three, suburbia has been full of unpleasant surprises. Her once-loving husband is hardly ever home. The supermommies on the playground routinely snub her. Her days are spent carpooling and enduring endless games of Candy Land, and at night, most of her orgasms are of the do-it-yourself variety.

When a fellow mother is murdered, Kate finds that the unsolved mystery is the most exciting thing to happen in Upchurch, Connecticut, since her neighbors broke ground for a guesthouse and cracked their septic tank. Even though the local police chief warns her that crime-fighting's a job best left to the professionals, Kate launches an unofficial investigation -- from 8:45 to 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, when her kids are in nursery school.

As Kate is drawn deeper into the murdered woman's past, she begins to uncover the secrets and lies behind Upchurch's picket-fence facade -- and considers the choices and compromises all modern women make as they navigate between marriage and independence, small towns and big cities, being a mother and having a life of one's own.

"New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner's newest novel tells the story of a young mother's move to a postcard-perfect Connecticut town and the secrets she uncovers there. For Kate Klein, a semi-accidental mother of three, suburbia's been full of unpleasant surprises. Her once-loving husband is hardly ever home. The supermommies on the playground routinely snub her. Her days are spent carpooling and enduring endless games of Candy Land, and at night, most of her orgasms are of the do-it-yourself variety. When a fellow mother is murdered, Kate finds that the unsolved mystery is one of the most interesting things to happen in Upchurch since her neighbors broke ground for a guesthouse and cracked their septic tank. Even though Kate's husband and the police chief warn her that crime-fighting's a job best left to professionals, she can't let it go. So Kate launches an unofficial investigation -- from 8:45 to 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, when her kids are in nursery school -- with the help of her hilarious best friend, carpet heiress Janie Segal, and Evan McKenna, a former flame she thought she'd left behind in New York City. As the search for the killer progresses, Kate is drawn deeper into the murdered woman's double life. She discovers the secrets and lies behind Upchurch's placid picket-fence facade -- and the choices and compromises all modern women make as they navigate between independence and obligation, small towns and big cities, being a mother and having a life of one's own. Engrossing, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny, Goodnight Nobody is another unputdownable, timely tale; an insightful mystery with a great heart and a narrator you'll never forget. "

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love a desperate housewife .......2007-10-07

Ahhhh yes, the modern housewives. They provide such exquisite fodder for a TV show or best-selling novel, don't they? The more high-strung and close to perfection, the better the character. Well, there are plenty in this book to poke fun of. The main character, Kate, is not quite part of the "mommy in-crowd" (and oh, how much her crazy, madcap life mirrors my own) until she is invited over to lunch by the Queen of Perfection. Only thing is, the queen is dead, in her own home. So Kate decides to take on the case of this bizarre murder. After all, she used to have a career in journalism back in the city. I'm not sure how to classify this book - a murder mystery? Chick lit? It's a little bit of both. Weiner's writing is sharp as always and that pulls this storyline out of the cheesiness it could be. But there were so many times that I had to laugh at her wry humor and then remember - hey, somebody DIED. I'm not a big mystery fan, but this was a good one. I didn't see it coming. Obviously, neither did the victim.

3 out of 5 stars Fun and entertaining, but ending seems rushed..........2007-09-15

I am a big Jennifer Weiner fan since reading Good In Bed. I have enjoyed her subsequent books with the exception of Little Earthquakes, which I thought was just middling. Goodnight Nobody is a very entertaining read. It's got Weiner's witty dialogue combined with an edgy first-person voice by the heroine, and I devoured the book from beginning to end. However, I am very disappointed with the second half of this book, which is why I couldn't give it a higher rating than 3 stars. Kate Klein is a former journalist from New York with all of the single girl angsts -- a less-than-respectable job in a tabloid newspaper and an unrequited love for Evan McKenna, her hunky next door neighbor. But things change after she marries Ben. Now she's a housewife and mother of three living in Connecticut, and she's so bored she decides to become an amateur sleuth when a fellow housewife gets murdered. So Kate devotes most of her time discovering the many secrets involving Kitty Cavanaugh and with the help of Evan, her former neighbor and long-time crush, and her friend Janie, she discovers that suburban life isn't all that's cracked up to be.

As said earlier, I enjoyed Weiner's witty dialogue and wonderful voice. I also enjoyed the backdrop of suburbia, giving the novel a Desperate Housewives-meets-Susan-Isaacs feel to it, but things sort of go downhill about halfway through the story. Kate's life is underdeveloped. Her married life is of very little consequence in the novel. Yes, her husband works a lot and is hardly ever home, and we all know that she's not in love with him, but some more scenes and interactions between them wouldn't have hurt. Most of the scenes center on Kate playing the amateur sleuth, living her kids under her friend's care for most of the novel. Her history with Evan McKenna is very interesting, and I would have liked to see more scenes with them together, but again, there is very little of that in the novel. It gave me the impression that even the author herself thought the heroine's life was boring and that is why she devoted most of the story to the whodunit storyline. The ending seems rushed. In the last forty or so pages, it seems that Weiner suddenly remembers that she's almost reached her deadline and has to wrap up the story, so she does a quick resolution regarding Kitty's murder and leaves the heroine's issues unresolved. The unresolved thing is fine with me in books. After all, literature mirrors life, and not everything is wrapped up in a neat little bow in life, but I feel cheated in this one. I would have liked to have known if she'd settle for Ben or risk everything and go for Evan, who is an interesting character in that he's flawed and not a perfect romantic hero (he, after all, is seducing a married woman with kids). It left me feeling as if the heroine's life hadn't been interesting enough to even give it a dignified semi-resolution. Instead of doing that, the author decides to resolve Kitty's parentage, which, to be honest, was of very little interest to me. (Maybe, just maybe, Weiner intends to write a sequel, or turn the whole housewife-slash-sleuth thing into a series, in which case I can understand the loose ends.) Ah, well. Goodnight Nobody is a great, entertaining read. Perhaps you'll enjoy it -- warts and all.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-09-14

This book is totally in the tradition of Susan Isaacs - in a way it felt familiar as I read, but only the style not the plot. Jennifer Weiner always delivers crisp dialogue, reliable plotting, and good, easy prose.

If you're in the mood for a cosy mystery, set in suburbia and played out between square meals and childrens' naps, this is one for you!

4 out of 5 stars Fun summer read.......2007-09-03

I thought this book was entertaining, fairly clever and funny. Yes, its a little unrealistic, but I think fiction has a right to be. I would have liked a little more resolution at the end though. Overall, a great book to bring on vacation.

5 out of 5 stars Such a surprising book!!!.......2007-08-25

This book took twist and turns that I never expected. I felt as if I could not put this book down. It held my attention the entire time. It had humor, love and mystery.

Book Description

Where the Truth Lies is a tour de force of sinister mystery, sly comedy, grand cuisine, and incredible sex—a sensual, sardonic, neo-Dickensian thriller in which a latter-day Alice careens through the seductive Wonderland of New York and Los Angeles in the dark heart of the 1970s.

This novel of intrigue speeds from one vivid setting to another, all of them factually real even as they are fantastically surreal: a clandestine club in Disneyland with a dazzlingly well stocked bar; a dizzying Shangri-La of a castle hidden away in Burbank; a drive-in movie theater nestled below the most chic streets of midtown Manhattan; an elegant table for four perched thirty thousand feet above the earth.

Written by Edgar, Tony, and Grammy Award winner Rupert Holmes (who first came to public attention in the mid-seventies as a singer and writer of story songs), Where the Truth Lies will wine and dine you in wickedly whimsical company, all the while luring you into a labyrinth of ever-sharpening bends and darkening corners.

The tale is told by O’Connor, a vivacious, free-spirited young journalist known for her penetrating celebrity interviews and bent on unearthing secrets long ago buried by the handsome showbiz team of singer Vince Collins and comic Lanny Morris. These two highly desirable men, once inseparable (and insatiable where women were concerned), were driven apart by a bizarre and unexplained death that may have cast one of them as a murderer.

As the tart-tongued, eye-catching O’Connor ventures deeper into this unsolved mystery, she finds herself compromisingly coiled around both men, knowing more about them than they realize and less than she might like, but increasingly fearful that she now knows far too much.

At once funny, frightening, delightful, and disturbing as it restores the opulent Hollywood and Manhattan of the seventies to their garish glory, Where the Truth Lies drops its veils like a giddy and voluptuous Salome who knows not what reward or punishment awaits her when she is at last naked. It is the work of a master storyteller and wit at the very top of his form.

"Where the Truth Lies is a beguiling suspense novel. It's sexy and surprising, witty and intriguing. I was hooked from the very first page."
CANDACE BUSHNELL, AUTHOR OF SEX IN THE CITY AND FOUR BLONDES

"Days after you finish this book, you'll still feel the narrator's voice elbowing through your brain. Fully realized characters, ruthless commentary, and a beautifully dark sense of humor -- all masquerading as a hyper-clever mystery. You won't look at the truth the same way again."
BRAD MELTZER, AUTHOR OF THE MILLIONAIRES

"Rupert Holmes seats you gently next to an irresistible narrator only to entangle you completely in her twisted, dark, exhilarating troubles. The ensuing thriller crosses a Dickensian world of deceit and destiny with the slipping glory of 1970s New York and Los Angeles. Every character is so alive with delicious secrets that you'll never suspect Where the Truth Lies."
MATTHEW PEARL, AUTHOR OF THE DANTE CLUB

"Five pages into Rupert Holmes's Where the Truth Lies, I was intrigued. Twenty pages in, I was laughing. A hundred pages in, my wife told me to turn off the damned light already and come to bed. This is a book astonishing not only for its intricate plot and rich characters but for the ways in which it finds humor in the darkest of places."
   ERIC GARCIA, AUTHOR OF ANON

5 out of 5 stars Gob-smackingly good.......2007-08-11

Everything you may have heard about this book - whether from the Times of London or the Washington Post - is true. I will use the word 'sensational' here and solemly promise never to use it again.

There were more times than I can remember when I actually had to say to myself (aloud) "calm down, calm down". And not because of the mesmerising storyline but because of the sheer beauty and accomplishment of the writing, all the more so since the book is 'narrated' by a twenty-something female journalist.

As a bonus, not that one were really needed, Holmes has written the best sex scenes in modern fiction (I thought Jane Smiley had already done that in 'Good Faith').

But, strangely and astonishingly, it was only after some three hours had passed since finishing this modern masterpiece that I stopped dead in my tracks and the hair on my neck suddenly rose to attention. Earlier I had wondered how such a perfect evocation of grief and loss had come to be written. And there in the author's acknowledgments right at the end is the answer. A double-whammy indeed.

Drop everything else and read this now.

4 out of 5 stars Embracing the myth.......2007-05-03

I'm not going to attempt a full review of this book - that's been handled ably by others already. But I want to contribute a brief perspective on the element of the story that resonated so profoundly for me.

There is a wonderfully evocative sequence set in Disneyland that both exposes the artifice of the fantasy and embraces our romantic longing for its own mythology. Once I experienced this part of the book, the significance of the story for my own life leaped out at me.

There is so much of the emotion and dramatic power of our world that feels calculated and artificial, from the stories we see on television to the persona of our politicians to the paper tigers of some of our sports heroes. Everywhere we turn, we slam into the cynical constructs of a world driven by media and marketing.

The message that "Where The Truth Lies" speaks to me is that, in spite of this apparent duplicity in the cultural myths of our lives, the power they have can be undiminished, because that power comes from ourselves, not the corporate manipulations that create their veneer.

Having the behind-the-scenes-workings of Disneyland revealed in the book did little to diminish the romantic and nostalgic wonder the scenes there evoked in me. That theme continues throughout the book, ultimately showing how the double-dealing, self-deception and cynical brutality of the worlds of show business and publishing could not quench the flame of human connection and hope - a flame that flickered all the way to the final wonderful sentence.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-03-07

This book is one of those that has a story with engaging charcterrs at the same time. I could not put this down, I even unknowningly missed 'Desperate Housewives' a few times I was so hooked; I found myself putting off my homework, turning OFF ipod, even my cell phone was turned off for a while (and I am addicted to my cell phone, if I'm not alking, I'm texting) and while I was reading this book, I did none of that. I was compltetly lost in this book. You'll love this book!!

5 out of 5 stars AT LAST A WORTHWHILE READ.......2006-08-10

Even after researching the most touted new books, of the dozen or so I read each month, perhaps one stands out as recommendable. This is it! Believably quirky characters, a convoluted plot, plus deft, droll writing cinched my vote. Enjoy this one - they are rare indeed.

3 out of 5 stars Has a few twists.......2006-05-06

Ok, I admit it..I've been a Rupert Holmes fan since college (almost 30 years ago) when I was first introduced to his album "Widescreen". I was curious to see how his talents as a writer would pan out, as "Widescreen" has some very witty lyrics. This novel is hardly ground-breaking, but it has an interesting concept, and the writing has some occasionaly clever turns of phrase. In the long run, it is far-fetched and the heroine thwarts "death" a few too many times to be plausible. The book is fine for some light summer reading, but don't expect too much from its pages.

Anne McCaffrey's Pern series has been running successfully for so long that most of the Dragonriders' original problems have been solved. In The Skies of Pern, she confronts her standard cast of characters with the consequences of those solutions, consequences that are a whole new set of problems. Now that the Red Star has been pushed to another orbit, there will only be a few more ravenous Threads descending from it for them and their dragons to fight--and what role will that leave for them? They have successfully reclaimed Earth's lost technology--and suddenly everyone with a craft that might be outmoded, or who is phobic about surgery, is on the rampage, sabotaging and smashing and making up rumors. These fundamentalist Abominators are sure that something terrible will happen if the old ways are not gone back to--and sure enough, fire descends, on cue, from the skies.

Anne McCaffrey's tales of genetically engineered dragons and a lost colony that has declined into feudalism are ultimately SF rather than fantasy because they are about finding solutions to problems, solutions that involve working with what you are given to start off with; The Skies of Pern is all about elegant solutions to credible problems. --Amazon.co.uk

          Book Description

Thanks to Anne McCaffrey, millions of readers have soared the skies on dragonback, shared the thoughts and dreams of the great dragons of Pern, and risked life and limb to safeguard the planet from the deadly threat of falling Thread. With the Dragonriders of Pern, McCaffrey has given us more than just an extraordinary masterwork of imagination. She has given us a whole world—and has taught us to fly. Now, in this triumphant return to Pern, Anne McCaffrey takes us on an adventure as surprising and unforgettable as any that has come before . . .

It is a time of hope and regret, of endings and beginnings. The Red Star, that celestial curse whose eccentric orbit was responsible for Thread, has been shifted to a harmless orbit, and the current Threadfall will be the last. Technological marvels are changing the face of life on Pern. And the dragonriders, led by F'lessan, son of F'lar and Lessa and rider of bronze Golanth, and Tia, rider of green Zaranth, must forge a new place for themselves in a world that may no longer need them.

But change is not easy for everyone. There are those who will stop at nothing— not even violence—to keep Pern and its people pure. And now a brand-new danger looms from the skies . . . and threatens a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions.

Once again, the world looks to the dragons and their riders to solve the crisis and save the world. But now, as the friendship of F'lessan and Tia begins to bloom into something more, unforeseen tragedy strikes: a tragedy destined to forever change the future—not just of the two young lovers, but of every human and dragon on Pern . . .

              Book Description

              Dragonseye:
Thread: deadly silver strands that fall from the sky like rain, devouring every organic thing in their path - animals, plants, and people alike. Who could believe that such a horrible thing could exist? After all, it's been two hundred years since Thread supposedly fell on Pern. No one alive remembers that first onslaught. There's no sign of it anywhere in the world. Only the dragons, originally created to be a weapon against Thread, are still around to remind people that once before their population was decimated, their hopes and dreams and livelihoods almost destroyed forever.

For two centuries the dragonriders have been practicing and training, passing down from generation to generation the Threadfighting techniques learned on the fly by their besieged ancestors. And most of the Lord Holders are prepared to protect their people, to provide sanctuary, to assemble groundcrews to search out and destroy any Thread that might be missed by the dragons soaring overhead. All but one.

Even now the ominous signs are appearing: the violent winter storms and volcanic eruptions that are said to herald the approach of the Red Star and its lethal spawn. Impossibly, one stubborn Lord Holder, Chalkin of Bitra, refuses to believe - and that disbelief could spell disaster for all of Pern. So while the dragonriders desperately train to face an enemy they've never fought before, they and the other Lord Holders must find a way to deal with Chalkin and protect Bitra.

              The Masterharper of Pern:
In a time when no Thread has fallen for centuries - when, indeed, many are beginning to dare to hope that Thread will never fall again - a boy is born to Harper Hall. His name is Robinton, and he is destined to be one of the most famous and beloved leaders Pern has ever known.

It is a perilous time for harpers. They sing of Thread, yet more and more people are beginning to doubt the return of that deadly scourge. They teach reading, writing, history, but Fax - who hates the harpers in general - is determined to keep his growing area of influence free of the learning that might sow unrest. And they extol the dragonriders, whom many view increasingly as a drain on the resources of the Holds. Now harpers are being turned away from the holds; and, worse yet, they are being derided, attacked, even beaten.

It is the climate of unrest that Robinton will come into his own. For despite the tragedies that beset his own life, he continues to believe in music and in the dragons, and is determined to save his beloved Pern from itself . . .so that the dragonriders can be ready to fly against the dreaded Thread when it at last returns!

              The Skies of Pern:
Now that Pern can look forward to a future without the threat of Threadfall, the people are free to leave their protective stone holds and spread across more of the planet, as well as improve their lives with the newly discovered ancient technology. Not everyone is happy, though. Some resist the change, and consider anything new to be an "abomination." And the dragonriders are uncertain: without Thread, what will their purpose be in Pernese society?

Then a new danger - again from the skies - looms. Once again, the people must pull together . . . And turn to the only ones who can solve the crisis: the dragonriders of Pern!

'The Vulgate Bible' is the traditional name given to the Bible translated into 'common' or 'vulgar' Latin -- in the aftermath of the breakup of the Roman Empire in the West, connections were lost with the Greek East, and languages began to differentiate in various ways, with Latin becoming the 'lingua franca' of the time. By the seventh century, a Bible put together with translations from Jerome and others became the common bible for the West. This edition follows that translation (the original biblical texts were in Hebrew and Greek), following the ordering of Clement, pope in 1592 (rather late in the day; prior to this, there were different orderings of the Bible, and there is still variation between denominations as to ordering and which books get included).

This version includes both the Gallican and Hebrew Psalters side by side (on facing pages), as there is sufficient authority to attest to the validity and integrity of each. Jerome's prologues are included here, placed according to the biblical books' arrangement (not as Clement's printing had it); Clement's more modern division is retained for books that for Jerome were joined -- I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, and Ezra-Nehemiah were each single books for Jerome, but modern chapter/verse/book division has them separate, and for ease of modern scholarship, that is retained here.

The text is printed 'per cola et commata', that is, without punctuation and divisions that would not have appeared in the original Hebrew or Greek manuscripts (many people do not realise that the earliest manuscripts lacked punctuation, chapter, verse, and book designations; many even lacked spaces between words, which thankfully has been incorporated here). Capital letters are used for proper names and sacred names/terms.

Variants are included, but this is not an exhaustive manual of variations, so only a few primary authorities for variations are cited in general.

The text of the Bible, from Genesis to the Revelation, with some apocryphal books, prologues, notes, and even the preface, is all in Latin, the Latin of the Vulgate, which places it several centuries later than 'classical' Latin of Cicero and Catullus, but centuries prior to 'church Latin' proper. There are nearly 2000 pages in two volumes, bound with strong binding and a silk page marker for each sewn into the binding.

Meant for scholars, its use is probably not really appropriate for 'church' use -- given its lack of punctuation, it isn't a text from which to read aloud generally. However, it is a very useful text for those who wish to study the development of Bible -- while it is more 'in vogue' to study the earliest, original language editions, it is undoubtedly true that the Bible in Latin has had perhaps the greatest effect on overall Christendom for the longest period of any language for the Bible, probably rivaled only by the current linguistic champion, English.

5 out of 5 stars The cornerstone of later Latin prose.......2001-03-21

This is, of course, the Bible of Gutenberg, the version that held authoritative sway in Europe for more than a millennium, and remains, at least in theory, the authoritative version of the Scriptures for Roman Catholics.

As to the text itself, it's the Bible. Your opinion is probably already fixed. Of course, it contains the apocryphal or "deuterocanonical" books that are included by Roman Catholics. Jerome's style, though, echos throughout just about all Latin literature that came after this sonorous and influential book; and it is that style I would praise.

Latin literature was trapped in a maze of Greek fiddle-faddle. The schools of Greek rhetoric, and the reverence paid at Rome to Greek literature, fostered a convoluted prose style that is generally unlike the glimpses of native Roman style that sometimes break through in Caesar, Cato, or Tacitus.

In poetry, the situation was even worse. Roman poets had to break their metre on the Procrustean bed of Greek prosody, and there are literally dozens of native Latin words that simply cannot be made to fit. Contrived syntax and distorted grammar are everywhere.

The sonorous literature of the Hebrew scriptures, written by men whose notions of rhetoric were wholly different, and the plainspoken Greek of the Koine New Testament, cleared away the cobwebs. Jerome was actually the heir to a tradition of several centuries of Bible-writing in Latin; his task, like the task of the King James Bible committee, was as much of comparison and revision as it was of producing an entirely new translation.

Jerome's Bible was call the "Vulgate," largely because it was intended to be heard, used, and understood by its readers and hearers. His Latin is occasionally sniffed at by Ciceronians, because its usage follows the popular usage of Christians more closely than those who conformed to the Grecianizing norms of pagan schools.

Likewise, the powerful example of the Psalms went far in creating a new school of native poetry in Latin. This new poetry revived the accentual metres that had lived on in the twilight since the earliest days of the Saturnian metre. And, being made by the natural rhythms of the Latin language, it was usually clearer in syntax and freer in image than the poems in the Greek metres.

Late in the Empire, this Bible broke the chains that had held back Latin literature. Its influence on Latin prose runs as deep as the influence of Tyndale's Bible on English prose.
