In 1981, Marilynne Robinson wrote Housekeeping, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and became a modern classic. Since then, she has written two pieces of nonfiction: Mother Country and The Death of Adam. With Gilead, we have, at last, another work of fiction. As with The Great Fire, Shirley Hazzards's return, 22 years after The Transit of Venus, it was worth the long wait. Books such as these take time, and thought, and a certain kind of genius. There are no invidious comparisons to be made. Robinson's books are unalike in every way but one: the same incisive thought and careful prose illuminate both.

The narrator, John Ames, is 76, a preacher who has lived almost all of his life in Gilead, Iowa. He is writing a letter to his almost seven-year-old son, the blessing of his second marriage. It is a summing-up, an apologia, a consideration of his life. Robinson takes the story away from being simply the reminiscences of one man and moves it into the realm of a meditation on fathers and children, particularly sons, on faith, and on the imperfectability of man.

The reason for the letter is Ames's failing health. He wants to leave an account of himself for this son who will never really know him. His greatest regret is that he hasn't much to leave them, in worldly terms. "Your mother told you I'm writing your begats, and you seemed very pleased with the idea. Well, then. What should I record for you?" In the course of the narrative, John Ames records himself, inside and out, in a meditative style. Robinson's prose asks the reader to slow down to the pace of an old man in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956. Ames writes of his father and grandfather, estranged over his grandfather's departure for Kansas to march for abolition and his father's lifelong pacifism. The tension between them, their love for each other and their inability to bridge the chasm of their beliefs is a constant source of rumination for John Ames. Fathers and sons.

The other constant in the book is Ames's friendship since childhood with "old Boughton," a Presbyterian minister. Boughton, father of many children, favors his son, named John Ames Boughton, above all others. Ames must constantly monitor his tendency to be envious of Boughton's bounteous family; his first wife died in childbirth and the baby died almost immediately after her. Jack Boughton is a ne'er-do-well, Ames knows it and strives to love him as he knows he should. Jack arrives in Gilead after a long absence, full of charm and mischief, causing Ames to wonder what influence he might have on Ames's young wife and son when Ames dies.

These are the things that Ames tells his son about: his ancestors, the nature of love and friendship, the part that faith and prayer play in every life and an awareness of one's own culpability. There is also reconciliation without resignation, self-awareness without deprecation, abundant good humor, philosophical queries--Jack asks, "'Do you ever wonder why American Christianity seems to wait for the real thinking to be done elsewhere?'"--and an ongoing sense of childlike wonder at the beauty and variety of God's world.

In Marilynne Robinson's hands, there is a balm in Gilead, as the old spiritual tells us. --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

Twenty-four years after her first novel, Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations from the Civil War to the twentieth century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. Writing in the tradition of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, Marilynne Robinson's beautiful, spare, and spiritual prose allows "even the faithless reader to feel the possibility of transcendent order" (Slate). In the luminous and unforgettable voice of Congregationalist minister John Ames, Gilead reveals the human condition and the often unbearable beauty of an ordinary life.

1 out of 5 stars Boring Book!.......2007-10-08

I can't believe all the praise this book received! It is so boring! There is absolutely no plot, it's just a bunch of letters that the author wrote about his life. It is very hard to follow and is uninventive. I originally bought it because it's a Pulitzer Prize winner, but I was very, very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Slow Down for Excellence.......2007-09-30

Like a Rembrandt or a Gauguin, or an exquisite gourmet dinner, you will savor the writing, the language, the nuances and the hidden humor in this masterpiece novel. Warning. You'll also weep as you journey with John Ames, the 76-year-old still-in-the-pulpit Congregational minister in Gilead, Iowa. It's 1956 and Pastor Ames is journaling a life letter to his seven-year old son, an extraordinary blessing from his second and younger wife.

Warning #2. It will slow you down. Way down. Gilead will prick your emotions, then trigger snickers that balloon to belly laughs. Why read it? It's a masterpiece of writing, words and ideas. It will inspire your vision for excellence. It's not a leadership or management book, but it is.

5 out of 5 stars God Drunk.......2007-09-30

The novel Gilead by Marilynne Robinson is pretty great.

The voice in Gilead is wonderfully convincing. The narrator is a minister in his 70's who's got a bad heart and is writing to his 7 year old son who will never probably be able to know his father really, know what his father was like. So the minister starts telling his life story which involves telling about his father who was also a minister and his grandfather who was also a minister, one who rode with the abolitionist John Brown. The book is a sort of history of religion in America across the last 150 years, talking about Karl Barth and Sartre, and talking about how God gave the American people visions back then to encourage us to break the chains that bound the Africans to the mud of slavery.

And this novel also gives a beautiful evocation of life in Kansas and Iowa since the middle of the 19th century. Robinson, who's from small town Idaho I believe, really knows how to write down what it's like to live the kind of quiet life you get in places like Charleston, Illinois, a town I lived in for 25 years. The minister's son in the novel is 7 years old in 1956. So, for me, there are also lots of charming moments that remind me of my growing up. The boy's watching the Cisco Kid (one of my favorites) on a tiny TV set, going to movie theaters to see movies about US Marshalls in wide brimmed sombreros rounding up bad guys riding hard-tracking mustangs, etc. It does take me back.

I like the history and the prairieness and the popular culture references a lot, but I'm not sure what I make of the novel finally. It is so Christian, so God taken and God drunk. I figure that maybe Robinson is arguing that Christianity should return itself to the sort of humility it had at some point in the past when it was beset by existentialism. But I'm not sure if Christianity ever had that sort of humility. I know that the Catholicism I knew in the 50's was never humble. It was pretty muscular. The Pope was a sort of ecclesiastical Uncle Sam rolling his sleeves back to punch the God-cursing Commie specter of Joe Stalin in the nose.

Are there any humble religions? I know there are humble people inside (and outside) religions, but humble religions? Self effacing religions? Head bowing religions?

I'm not sure. But I do recommend Robinson's book. It's thoughtful and beautifully written and makes you wonder about things worth wondering about.

3 out of 5 stars Book Club selection - Calm and Detached.......2007-09-27

I really wasn't sure about this book even after I ready it. It is very well written, and interesting. There are no chapters at all, just one long narrative in first person. The story was set in the early 50's and the main character recounted episodes from his life of 70 or so years. Sometimes it was difficult for me to remember the year the events may have taken place. And the main conflicts of the book were boring to me, Yawn. I did like this book but I couldn't love it. It was a nice easy read, calm and collected.

2 out of 5 stars I'd like to love it, but I was bored.......2007-09-16

The novel is written beautifully, but I was waiting and waiting for something to happen. This is like some of the novels and short stories I had to read when I was in undergrad where I can clearly see the literary merit, but the story is really lacking for me. I'm glad I read it, but I won't re-read it.

The Stories and art in this volume of whimsey share one important element. All were generously contributed in an effort to aid the victims of terror in northern Israel. Many of these artists are the leading voices of their respective genres-their politics and points of view vary sufficiently to create a stout dialogue. The result of their joining is BALM IN GILEAD, a delicious anthology of artistic speculations and meditations that, despite theological nuances, move beyond the boundaries of culture to join in a single voice of hope.

2 out of 5 stars Recycled lines does not make a good book..........2007-08-21

I took a leap of faith when buying Ms. Holt's book mainly because they were reissued and sold for 4.99. I should have probably kept my money and searched the library instead. Not to say she isn't a good writer but I have some serious doubt about her originality.

I read Deeper than Desire first and then this one. I couldn't help but notice that some of the lines were EXACTLY the same. For example:

                    "Bigger than most"
"What did you expect, flowers and bad poetry?"

After reading it, I had to pause and look at the cover to see if I wasn't reading a different book. That's kind of disappointing.

Now onto the characters, Marcus was the worst kind of putz. Why would he believe Kate's mother-in-law over Kate? He didn't trust the woman but it was so easy to take her word without consulting the woman he's been intimate with.

Another thing that bothered me was the relationship between a man of 35 and a child of sixteen. Okay granted she was a spoiled brat and needed to be taken down a peg but to read her husband forcing himself...well let's just say it wasn't very comfortable to read.

The ONLY saving grace was Christopher and Selena. Their's wasn't the best story and I think they got together way to fast (to the point of disbelief) but at least it wasn't as ridiculous as Kate and Marcus' conflict. (I'm still rolling my eyes)

I gave this book two stars because of Chris and Selena....

Don't buy...get if from the library instead or borrow it from a friend but save your money.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst romance novels I have ever read!!! (And I have read a lot of them).......2007-08-17

Save your money, don't buy this piece of garbage. What a miserable book. Full of stupid flat characters and a lame plot line. I've never been so dissapointed in leading characters, Marcus and Kate were bland boring people that never made me care about them. They were just there, and I was left wondering why i spent money on this piece of drivel.
I also was not fond of the sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, a well written sex scene can add a lot to a book, but these actually made me go "ewww" They were crude, and rather vulgar. At one point in time she used the word "Sawed" in reference to the act. It was just a bad book, poorly written, and should quickly be forgotten about. Shame on you Ms. Holt for wasting my time and my money!

                    1 out of 5 stars A real stinker........2005-12-06

This was one of the few books that I almost stopped reading. The plot was transparent and the characters unlikeable. The heroine was dull and whiney; the hero was a self-absorbed jerk. "Oh, no one will ever love me because I'm so horrible; I'll just act more horribly because of it." Marcus admired Kate for being fiery, when she actually was a spineless wimp. My first Cheryl Holt book, and probably my last. If you need to read it, try the library first.

1 out of 5 stars Bad, just bad..........2005-10-16

After reading other reviews of this book I was expecting it to be a good read. It's not. The characters were dreadful, the dialog was stilted and unbelievable, and the plot so thin as to be almost non-existent. As I read the first chapter, I knew this was a loser, but I read on until the end convinced that it had to get better. It didn't. Spend your money on a better book.

5 out of 5 stars Further than Passion.......2005-10-10

Cheryl Holt has done it again. I picked this book up on a Saturday afternoon and couldn't put it down until midnight when I finished reading it. This book takes you through every one of your emotions.

The saga of Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, continues in PAPER DOLLS, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra's award-winning VERTIGO series. In addition to catching up on the adventures of Yorick's monkey Ampersand (whose body holds the key to stopping the male-killing plague) and telling the origin of Agent 355, PAPER DOLLS chronicles Yorick and 355's search for Yorick's fiancee Beth in Australia -- a search that yields a large dose ofunwanted publicity for the Last Man, and deadly consequences for those he cares for!

Yorick has finally arrived and is a position to look for Beth. However, he runs into a big problem when a journalist from a less than broadsheet quality newspaper finds out he is still alive, and is a story she definitely does not want to lose. He does eventually find Beth, and he certainly gets a hell of a surprise when he sees her.

Brian K. Vaughan, Y: The Last Man: Paper Dolls (Vertigo, 2006)

(Note: this review contains major spoilers for earlier books in the series. If you're not up to date with the series, and you plan to read it, don't read this review until after you've read book six.)

Vaughn's Y: The Last Man just keeps getting better as it goes on. Yorick and co. are on their way to Japan to search for the kidnapped Ampersand. This book focuses on a part of the trip where the crew stop in Australia to look for Yorick's missing girlfriend Beth. As always, Paper Dolls features almost nonstop action, but the action never gets in the way of character development. If the series stays this good, Vaughan will have created one for the ages. ****

                        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-12-26

The beat ongoing Vertigo series since Preacher keeps rolling along with Paper Dolls, which gives the answers to some questions as well as opening a whole new batch of new ones. Yorick, Agent 355, and Dr. Mann have finally arrived in Austrailia in search of Yorick's girlfriend Beth, only instead to find a journalist who plans on making Yorick's existence the headline of the century. Also in this volume, Yorick's other Beth who he had a fling with, is in a bit of an unexpected situation. Not to mention that Agent 355's origin is revealed, and Yorick's kidnapped pet monkey Ampersand (the only other living mammal on the planet) makes a break from his ninja kidnapper in Japan. Fans of the series pretty much know what to expect here in terms of the story and art, with Brian K. Vaughan further orchestrating the ever evolving story while dropping hints of what is to come here and there. Pia Guerra's art remains the solid work that you'd come to expect as well, and at the same time it's nothing spectacular. All in all, Y: The Last Man continues to be pure comic gold, and here's more proof.

This book propelled me to go deeper in my personal walk with God. It was instrumental in my understanding on faith, surrender, forgivenss and love. Since then I have given this book out to many folks struggling in their faith and it has been such a blessing. Though written in 1961 it is as fresh as the day it was written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Spiritual Insight.......2006-05-05

What a legacy this woman of God left before she went home to heaven. Her life was a life of the right priorities. This anointed book will draw many people closer to God as they read the insight she shares. Reading about the testimonies of others who have overcome encourages you in your walk with the Lord Jesus.

Another theme from Holy Scripture that she emphasizes throughout the book is love, i.e., love for God and for other people. In fact, love for God will cause these other matters to fall into place appropriately. The motivation, desire, and focus will naturally flow out of a heart that loves God.

This book is so simply written, and views God so simply, that the whole thing really appealed to me. The simple concepts of prayers and how to reach God, as well as how to place God in your life are really easy. The many spiritual stories and accounts are very hard to quit reading. Very excellent! Very easy to read!

Catherine Marshall's works, while writen for a generation that seems light years from the pressures and priorities of life in the 21st century, continue to be a source of inspiration for their practical faith. In today's high-tech world that continually barrages the individual and the family with more and more information and provides less time for introspection, it is refreshing to read the reflections of a woman who lived a life of faith. Catherine Marshall dealt with the very real issues of personal illness, the death of a beloved husband and life as a single mother in a way that enriched her spiritual life, and she shares with her readers her own story and struggles as well as those of others who have searched to find meaning in life and a personal relationship with God.
