Book Description
"Remarkable...An intricate weaving of dramatic events with the supernatural and the cosmic...Evocative and lush...A rich and haunting narrative, an excellent new voice in contemporary fiction."
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
Now available in a Spanish language edition from Ballantine Books.
Here is the dreamy and bittersweet story of a family divided by politics and geography by the Cuban revolution. It is the family story of Celia del Pino, and her husband, daughter and grandchildren, from the mid-1930s to 1980. Celia's story mirrors the magical realism of Cuba itself, a country of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. DREAMING IN CUBAN presents a unique vision and a haunting lamentation for a past that might have been.

Interesting Story, but a cumbersome read.......2007-10-04
I found Dreaming in Cuban to be a cumbersome effort to read. Almost from the start I was beginning to lose track of the characters and I was beginning to think that I would need a score card to keep track of who was who. In this novel the author did create interesting scenes that centers around the Cuban family, and culture but there were so many loose ends when I finished reading the book that the overall story just didn't connect with me. It's not a terrible read, maybe just an entertaining story.
Fragmented.......2007-08-23
Disjointed segments come together to form Dreaming in Cuban. A series of letters, switches between first person and third person point of view, and an unclear ending result in a bewildered reader.
it was ok- what a let down.......2007-07-13
I don't know what the big deal was for this book.
I waited many years to read this book.
To me what a let down.
I expected much more. I lived in Miami's Cuba, so I expected more.
It was soooo depressing to live in Cuba. The daughter were so different like night and day. One sister was in to Santaria,( african voodoo) that she died because of it. Another sister was in the USA, and she went to Cuba and then decided she wanted to save her nephew. It was just too outlandish. And not realistic. The end was disappointing.
Tastes of Perfection...........2007-04-27
While it may sound like an overstatement, this book really does taste of perfection. The fact that Garcia began it as a poem which blossomed into a novel is apparent. The language is simply beautiful. Garcia tracks the del Pino women through their different experiences with exile, showing us both extremes (the pro-Castro, anti-American and the assimilated immigrant who hates communism and loves American democracy). However, Garcia does not leave us with merely polar opposites. She fills in the gaps with the angst ridden one-and-a-halfer Pilar (Life on the Hyphen), the male-dependant Felicia, and the repulsive men who walk in and out of the story. Garcia puts her money where her mouth is revealing that "no two exile experiences are the same."
The interweaving of letters from abuela Celia to her lost lover are a wonderful reinforcement (and even enhancement) of the narrative. If you are interested in Cuban American Studies, this book is a great outlet to see the effects of exile.
Whether you want to learn more about exile and Cuban-Americans or you just want a solid, entertaining novel, I highly recommend Cristina Garcia's masterpiece, Dreaming in Cuban.
Difficult, but interesting.......2006-12-12
I read this book for a graduate level class on Latino-American literature. It was the last book we read in the semester, so I have a lot to compare it to in the category. It was not my favorite. While fragmentation is a common theme and technique in writing literature of this genre, the fragmentation in this novel is felt more than it is observed. Readers experience some of the lost feelings and confusion that we would suppose modern Latin-American immigrants would feel in America. The writer's technique is so effective that it makes the story less compelling than others I have read that present fragmentation clearly and cleverly. Nevertheless, I learned something about Cuba, and generational conflicts, and about people when I read this book.

--Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
--Thulani Davis, The New York Times Book Review
"Conmovedora y perspicaz...Habla de una familia que est dividida política y geogr ficamente por la revolución cubana...[y] de las hendiduras que se abren en cada lado: En Cuba, entre una abuela que es una partidaria fervorosa de Castro y una hija que se refugia en un culto de santería afrocubano; en América, entre otra hija, agresivamente en contra de Castro y su propia hija, la artista punk y rebelde, que se burla de su obsesión...El realismo es exquisito."
--Richard Eder,Los Angeles Times
"Extraordinaria...Un tejido intrincado de eventos dram ticos con lo sobrenatural y lo cósmico...Evocadora y opulenta...Una narrativa rica y obsesionante, una voz nueva y excelente en la ficción contempor nea."
--Jackie Jones, San Francisco Chronicle
"Impresionante...Su historia se trata de tres generaciones de mujeres cubanas y sus reacciones por separado a la revolución. Su hazaña particular es la de contaria en un estilo tan caluroso y dulce como los 'aromas continuos de la vainilla y la almendra,' tan rítmico como la música de Beny Moré."
--Amelia Weiss, Time

¡Gracias a Dios!
The original version is the one in ENGLISH.......2003-10-03
Be warned, if you though a book with this title, and from an author with such a Latino name, had to be originally written in Spanish, you are wrong. The Spanish version is a translation, with a Spanish-from-Spain spin, rather than a Cuban touch. If you want to read the original version, you are better of with the English original "Deaming in Cuban". Even the author herself agrees, that the book looses a bit in the translation.
A Powerful Book.......2003-04-14
This book present the life and destinies of a CUban family divided by its political beliefs. It presents the life of the half of the family that stayed in Cuba and pledge its allgiance to the Revolution and the life of the ones that left Cuba for the United States. The exaggeration presented in the individual characters with their tendencies, fetishes, and political views opens a window into the reality of the Cuban families that have been divided by the Revolution. Cristina García writes with a powerful voice that entices your attention.
loosen up and enjoy!.......2003-03-20
Like other readers, I was a bit put off by the handful of characters all thrown at me at once. I had to refer to the family tree provided more than once. At one time, I put down the book, crying, This is insane! And then I got it. It is insane. Okay. I read Marquez, I get it. Once you stop wrestling with the story, trying to fit it into a conventional fiction mold, you can loosen up and enjoy the ride. Ms. Garcia is such a talented writer she can get away with anything.
I recommend this book without reserve.
Enjoy!

Don't Bother.......2007-05-15
I kept waiting for this book to get interesting, I finally gave up after 200 pages. I kept thinking the hero and heroine are going to talk each other to death.
Do not read!.......2007-03-23
It was boring! Welfonder dragged it on and on. There as no action in the plot till the very end.
Welfonder's series, 4.5.......2005-06-30
I really enjoyed getting lost in all of Welfonder's stories in this series. Her characters are Dynamic and will definitely stay with you. Different plots drive all of the stories and there were some extremely memorable scenes. I can't wait till her next one.
A couple of things were annoying though. For one thing, these hero's thoughts don't stray far from their "Phallus." Which did make for frequent sexual situations, thus one of the reasons we all love the genre, so I'm not so sure I'm complaining. And secondly, I started to "skim" parts of the book (which I NEVER do). It's just that I found myself frequently at points where, for instance, the heroine will say something and then it's 12 paragraphs of anything the hero could possibly be thinking or feeling till he responds to her. Or five paragraphs in the middle of the conversation to describe how the shutters are rattling against the windows! And unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating.
Having said that, I will still buy and devour anything and everything by this author. And would definitely recommend this series to be enjoyed mostly if read in order. Her first book is 1) Devil in a Kilt, then read 2) Bride of the Beast, then 3) Only for a Knight. And The MacLean Trilogy order is: 1) Knight in My Bed, 2) Master of the Highlands, and then 3) Wedding for a Knight.
So you know where my tastes lie: For the absolute best in Highland romance I would recommend Julie Garwood's "The Bride," "The Wedding," "The Secret," "Ransom," and "Saving Grace." Karen Marie Moning, and Marsha Canham. For Medieval: Garwood's "The Prize," "Honor's Splendor," & "Gentle Warrior." Also Amanda Quick's "Mystique," "Desire," & anything by Kinley Macgregor a.k.a. Sherrilyn Kenyon.
One of the most boring I've read.......2004-06-28
I thoroughly read the first half of book; started skimming from there to 2/3 of book; stopped reading completely. So disappointing......from the title and the ideas set forth at beginning of book, there was an infinate number of stories possible.
Great Book.......2003-09-19
I read this book in two days because I couldn't put it down. Story starts off quickly and keeps you glued to every page. The writing is wonderful and truly inspires your imagination.

Brand new. Number Seven in the Conrad Series. This time, Conrad goes on vacation and sees parts of the world he never imagined when he is taken captive by the Twaregs. Of course, he escapes and leads his armies on a crusade that he did not want to fight.
120,000 words and 230 pages of true old fashioned Conrad Stargard. Some people go to dude ranches or on cruises. Conrad's vacations look a little more like the Second Crusade.

A return to the strengths of the earlier books.......2007-09-27
Like many fans of the Crosstime Engineer, I wondered for years what would come next and the "Conrad's Search for Rubber" was too oblique an answer. This one returns to the humor, optimism, the "can-do", the overcoming stunning odds, new friends, vague foes, and offbeat historical locales (Timbuktu, the Skeleton Coast, the Moorish empire, etc..) The story's lively while also answering many questions about the remaining Mongol threat, tapping distant resources, etc... It's adult fiction in that economics and logistics matter while solutions are rarely clear and doing the right thing works out. It's Frankowski's most upbeat book since Lord Conrad's Lady many years ago, something that also set his books apart. Well worth the modest price.
Reads like a cross between a rough draft and an outline.......2007-01-03
I'm a huge fan of the Conrad series. I was more than happy to buy this book off the author's personal web page, just to see how Conrad was doing. Unfortunately there are many glaring problems with this latest installment.
First, this is not a finished product, apparently due to lack of a publisher. There are uncountable errors throughout the text, not just typo's but also the wrong word, pronoun, or character's name. Some events are disjointed, unexplained, or just don't make sense. Some sections are fully fleshed out, and bring the reader right into the action and the character's motivation, while other sections are the merest outline, with just bare facts listed in chronological order.
Still, these technical problems could be overlooked if that was the price we had to pay to enjoy another Conrad adventure. Except that Conrad has changed. He's become pompous, conceited, and spoiled. He refuses to listen to the Pope, a personal friend of his who saved his life repeatedly earlier in the series. Conrad goes to a neighboring kingdom and makes a point of being as rude as possible to the king, who never did him any real harm. In fact, the whole "I need a vacation from all this" seemed pretty petulant and spoiled.
One of my personal pet peeves though is with geography. Conrad travels along a river for a large part of the book. This is a significant river that is featured prominently on any globe of the world. Conrad follows the river to a mountain range that in actual fact is over a thousand miles from the river. There's a big difference between walking along a river full of water, and walking a thousand miles where water may be hard to find.
Basically, I cannot recommend this book to any but the most addicted of Conrad junkies, and those should be forewarned.
Conrad's Latest Adventure.......2006-03-14
The latest Conrad Stargard book is an enjoyable read, but it's not Frankowski's best work. It was some typos and editing problems, but they don't detract from the story.
Conrad is bored; he hasn't faced any new challenges in years, so he decides to go on "Vacation" to points unknown, alone. Not even Conrad Stargard can foresee every possible problem and he finds himself sick, maimed, and enslaved. He always felt that slavery was a crime against God, and being slave didn't change his mind. So Conrad did the sort thing that Conrad does, I don't want to spoil the story, but we get another classic Conrad Stargard book out the situation.
Before Conrad left Poland, the Pope (Ignacio) and the King (Henryk) were trying to order him to "Re-Take" the Holy Lands from the "Infidel Moslems". He refused pointing out that they had Polish Citizen's who were Moslems, so he couldn't see attacking someone based on their religion, and that the Christian Church couldn't "Re-Take" property that they had never owned. He suggested that they "Take" the Holy Land through trade and good works instead. Ignacio and Henryk became very upset about this, and in my opinion forgot who put them on their thrones, so they started the Crusade while Conrad was on "Vacation".
The novel wraps up these loose ends and gives "Uncle Tom" a challenge to overcome that may make life interesting for him and may give us a new book in the future.
LORD CONRAD'S CRUSADE.......2006-01-18
Leo Frankowski new Conrad adventure Lord Conrad's Crusade is an exciting action pack story about his capture and escape from slavery. In this story Conrad decides the only way to escape slavery is to attack and to conquer his way across North Africa. Freeing slaves along the way become habit forming for Conrad as he builds a new African Corp army of conquest and freedom. Great story and a must read.
Lord Conrad's Crusade.......2006-01-17
I was very happy to find that anouther of the Conrad Starguard books has come out. This book is a pre-publication version, so be aware. Trouble with publishers has caused Leo Frankowski to sell his own version.
That said, I have always enjoyed the Starguard series. Many wonderful adventures, told from several perspectives. I was glad to see a new book from the eyes of Lord Conrad. Being a fan I am aware of the story line and the way in which the books have progressed to this point. I did have some misgivings with the way our hero has developed. Maybe if the book was longer with more atention paid to filling out scenes it would have been better. It seems that Conrad has become more jaded, not just with women but with the average "little" people. He found no problem with killing everyone in villages due to their having slaves. I don't want slavery either, but this had been the world he was in. I would have liked to see some other way for him to win over people, rather than killing everyone. Some of his dialougue seemed similar to the words used by the Mongols in earlier books.
Over all though, a good read, I hope he can continure to provide us with more adventures. I also hope Leo's home and life in TVER Russia go well for him

seek God before looking at a man.......2005-08-31
a must book for any single woman desiring a relationship with a man. you must be serious because there is a contract in this book. after I signed the contract, i became satisfied with Jesus first. I still had a desire for a relationship, however, i was not desperate. This book taught me how to love men as a result.
Excellent Reading for Single and Married Women.......2005-07-21
This book was an excellent guide as to how to prepare yourself for your "Knight in Shining Armor", according to God's words. It was easy to read and very helpful when trying to find out who you are as person, before you can know how to have a mate. I recommend that all single and engaged females buy this book.

A Wake-Up Call.......2005-07-02
This book was and is a real awakening. It makes you realize that you can still go out and have fun while still being in accordance with GOD's plan. Every woman should read this book of she feels that in order to be happy she needs a man by her side or when she gets one her life will be full of happiness.
God as a vending machine.......2004-02-15
This book was recommended to me by a friend. After the first chapter, I was sceptical. It asks you to sign a paragraph stating that you want to set aside 6 months to prepare yourself for your future husband. It seems as though the entire book is built around you doing things so that you can get a husband. Becoming a better person is just a means to an end - getting a man. While all of the suggested things to work through are great, and a lot of what 'Bunny' has to say is good, the reason for doing them is not. I believe one should work on their character so that they can become more godly and Christ-like, not so that after putting in 6 months of time, God will act like a vending machine and give that person a husband.

Heads - Up Ladies!.......2007-07-08
157 Pgs - I strongly encourage every women to read this book if you have been through a lot of heartache in current and past relationships.
The way we allow people to treat us and the way we treat people entering into our lives has everything to do with our past and the acceptance of ourselves.
Believe it or Not!
Wilson gives you heads up on how to go about discovering your life long love and knight in shining armor
Still A Favorite.......2007-03-26
I first read this book 4 years ago just seeking a good read, not knowing who P.B.Wilson was. I did not expect the blessings that I received after reading Knight in Shining Armor. Wilson really opened my eyes, allowing me to look within myself instead of depending on a man to solve my life problems.
Don't get me wrong, I definitely have a desire for marriage and want a God-fearing man to take my hand for that long walk while here on this Earth. However, the one thing many women fail to realize is that Jesus is our first love. Initially, I didn't understand what that meant. After reading this book, the dust was cleared. I'm a better woman now that I've made my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ #1 in my life.
Knight in Shining Armor truly is a book for every woman because it speaks of more than how to prepare for a spiritual partner, but of how to love Jesus first. Seek Him and He will take care of the rest. It's that simple.
I encourage any woman who is feeling lonely, frustrated in the dating game, soon to be married, getting divorced, or compromised spiritually to read this book for your own awakening. I'm sure that after your 6 month commitment, you, too, will be spiritually refreshed and abundantly blessed!!
An excellent resource for all single Christian women.......2006-07-04
As a Christian counselor, I am very impressed with the insights offered in this book. It is easy to read & fun as well as wise! I have bought dozens of copies over time, and have received rave reviews from everyone who has read it.
