Book Description

Me encanto!.......2006-07-04
bueno.......2006-04-21
no es un libro magifico ni malo. Yo prefiero Cien Anos de Soledad (tambien de Garcia Marquez). Pero, yo recomendo este libro.
It's not a great book, but not bad either. I prefered 100 Years of Solitude (also by Garia Marquez). But, I recommend this book.
Excellent.......2006-03-14
Great book. It's the first time I read any of Garcia's works, but this one certainly got my attention. As another reviewer said on another version of the book, eventhough you know from the very beginning (from the title even) that Santiago is going to die, you can't help but keep reading to know more details about this fact. Very well done. Will be buying a different book from him and I'm quite certain I won't be disappointed.
-----

First things first. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a NOBEL price winner. He is a highly recognized writer. Honestly, I might not be qualified to critique his caliber.
Some of his writings are not easy to read. This one is short, but an atypical masterpiece. It is used in College as an example of a novel that does not follows the traditional introduction - climax - resolution path. Instead the writer returns back in time in every chapter and "retell" the story from a different character point of view. The main character is killed in every one of the chapters! And the poor soul was not guilty!
By the way, do give you a little extra time to figure out what is going on. This piece is not hard to read, the Spanish used is more contemporary and concised. But if you feel a little lost at the begining, it is OK. You are not really at the beginning of the story. You are at one of its many climax-ending points.
YOU WILL LIKE IT. YOU WILL NOT FORGET IT.
Muy Bueno!.......2005-08-13
I have been learning Spanish for 4 years now, and I have had my share at reading very boring and not very well written books in Spanish, and fortunately, some but very few good ones. One is Lazarillo de Tormes, and another is Cronica de Una Muerte Anunciada de Garcia Marquez. I have to say that even if i didn't know that Garcia Marquez was the man that made the literature of Columbia more noticed all over the world, and won the Nobel Prize for this work, and was most well known and famous for One Hundred Years of Solitude (which i hope to read in Spanish as well), i would have still been enamored into his style and what he represents in his works. Obviously, he's speaking for the culture and heritage of the people, and does it very well that from this book alone we learn a lot about it. At times i wish that in Spanish classes we could read books such as these that represent people in Spanish speaking countries in a better light. In other words, i wish we could read Spanish literature like this. I was surprised in how easily i followed this book without constantly relying on my Spanish dictionary. I highly recommend this book.
Binding is Terrible for this version.......2005-04-27
Don't be fooled by a cute cover and cheap price. The binding for this edition of the book is terrible. I have gone through three books (and I take good care) because all the pages have fallen out just from bending the book back and forth.
I love Garcia Marquez and he is somebody you will want to read again. But this paperback edition won't allow it - the book will break first!!!
Thanks.
Worth the time and price.......2003-08-27
I might as well write this in English. Since this site is viewed mainly by english speaking readers.
This book is not surprisingly a Very good work by G G Marquez. It is well crafted throughout, and does not bore easily like other books in Spanish (there are lots). It is so well written that you will remember it 5 and 10 years from the first chance.
The othern reviews tell very well what happens in the story. It tells our Latin American cutlure very well, from its names, sounds and traditions/folklore. I am going to purchase 'Amor en tiempos de colera', which is sadi to be a book created as sort of sequel to this one.
Santiago Nasar , and the Vicaria family, along with the rest of the inhabitants of the Colombian town in which the book takes place will startle you as one of the best cronicles written, at 105 pages only.
Customer Reviews:

The MacKenzies return in Ana Leigh's latest romance. In this story, Flint is no match for the widow Garnet Scott. When the two first meet, Garnet asks if she can accompany Flint on the trail, believing she would be safe traveling with him. He won't allow it; he prefers his own company and has no desire to look after a woman. Used to having her own way, the fiercely independent and determined woman ignores Flint's refusal and joins him. What follows is a series of romantic moments and often hilarious encounters. Garnet truly loves Flint (even when she hits him in the head with an iron pan), and she intends to rope this reluctant cowboy. Don't miss this delightful story.
Customer Reviews:
love the book its another great story.......2005-05-14
this is the most adventures book out of all the books that ana leigh wrote. i loved the love story between garnet and the wild cowboy flint i love all the books that ana leigh wrote they are all great books she is the best author.
i love this book it worth every penny trust me you wont be able to put it down.
A very enjoyable read..........2005-01-02
Flint & Garnet are a wonderful couple to read about. They both have so much personality & they are really funny. Garnet is the go get em type of gal & she went right after what she wanted which was Flint. It was fun seeing Honey & Luke again as well as the many others. This is a great series & I would recommend it to anybody. It's a great story with non-stop adventure.
Loved It!.......2004-06-28
I've read quite a few of the MacKenzie series and Flint's story is my favorite, followed by Josh's. I liked all the ones I've read except Kitty's, which I couldn't make myself finish. The scene where Garnet explains why she willingly stripped down in front of the Indians was hilarious. They had great chemistry. Would highly reccomend.
The MacKenzies (series).......2004-04-20
I've read all Ana Leigh's MacKenzie's Series. The
whole series is addicting. When I finished one, I
couldn't wait to start the next one to see what
else happend. Ana is a great author and knows how
to keep you interested and wanting to read more.
I'm looking forward to her next book in this series.
A disappointment........2003-11-21
I enjoyed the "luke" story so went on to this one but was disappointed. Although some of the dialogue was cute, the story was sadly lacking. It didn't hold my interest and I would up skipping sections to get through it. Didn't think much of the heroine who was a little "hot pants".

Three Books of Known Space

In Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven created Known Space, a universe in the distant future with a distinctive and complicated history. The center of this universe is Ringworld, an expansive hoop-shaped relic 1 million miles across and 600 million miles in circumference that is home to some 30 trillion diverse inhabitants. As in his past novels, Niven's characters in The Ringworld Throne spend their time unraveling the complex problems posed by their society.
Book Description
Come back to the Ringworld . . . the most astonishing feat of engineering ever encountered. A place of untold technological wonders, home to a myriad humanoid races, and world of some of the most beloved science fiction stories ever written!
The human, Louis Wu; the puppeteer known as the Hindmost; Acolyte, son of the Kzin called Chmeee . . . legendary beings brought together once again in the defense of the Ringworld. Something is going on with the Protectors. Incoming spacecraft are being destroyed before they can reach the Ringworld. Vampires are massing. And the Ghouls have their own agenda--if anyone dares approach them to learn.
Each race on the Ringworld has always had its own Protector. Now it looks as if the Ringworld itself needs a Protector. But who will sit on the Ringworld Throne?
"Niven's work has been an intriguing and consistent universe, and this book is the keystone of the arch. . . . [His] technique is wonderfully polished, his characters and their situations are nicely drawn . . . wraps up (maybe) a corner of a very interesting universe."

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A return to the Ringworld after a long writing delay. At the start, the Ringworld denizens have to deal with vampires of a sort. Yep, whacky. Later on, Louis Wu and our puppeteer friend have some of the same work to do, as he and Speaker To Animals' son are taken captive by a vampire Pak Protector.
They end up involved in a Protector conflict, vamps vs the others. In general though, the usual suspects aren't really the main focus of the book, it is the Pak struggle that occupies this position.
Ringworld Throne.......2007-06-29
A fairly good read, multiple story lines, a little slow moving with all these different story lines going on, not as engrossing as the previous Ringworld Novels but still worth reading.
dull and pointless disconnected plot.......2007-06-06
I really enjoyed the first Ringworld book, and although the second (Ringworld Engineers) was a bit so-so, I was still willing to give this one a shot. Unfortunately, it was terrible. The plot is very disjointed and thrown together. There are at minimum two unconnected stories. The first concerns a group of vampire hunters. Louis Wu is largely absent for that part of the story. Most of the first half is spent with the reader wondering why any of this is important. The second half of the novel concerns Louis Wu and some protectors. I won't spoil the plot for you, but suffice it to say there is almost nothing new in either of these plots. You simply don't care what happens to the characters. Good grief, I don't want to ever read about another protector again.
Niven finally returns to Ringworld.......2007-04-20
This is actually one of the better efforts from Niven in the last l5-20 years. I read Ringworld in the 70's and Ringworld Engineers in the 80's, so I had forgotten what had occurred previously. However, I don't think it is essential to read those books first.
The plot is basically that in the first half of the book that the races of Ringworld join together to eradicate the vampire menace while having a few orgies along the way. In the second half of the book, Louis Wu, Hindmost and Acolyte, Chmee's son, are drawn into the civil war between the Protectors. I actually enjoyed the first half of the book more.
The dialogue and direction got a little confusing to me as the book progressed toward its end. I have noted this before that I wish Niven would let the rest of us know what the heck is going on sometimes. He seems to have some problems getting that across.
Embarrassingly terrible.......2007-02-23
The third (and final, thank god) installation in the Ringworld series falls so far short of its predecessors that it leaves an unfortunate stain on the entire trilogy, which up to book 3 has been remarkable in the world of science fiction. Ringworld Throne left me so confused and angry that I'm not quite sure what to warn potential readers to expect, but here are a few that topped my list:
- The plot makes no sense at all. The entire thing is so disjointed, badly pieced together, and overall just poorly written it makes you wonder if Niven even put any effort into the book, or was just looking for some easy money. The first half is horrendous, focusing on a group of Ringworlders fighting some vampire infestation. Every character is completely flat and lifeless, and the vampire hunting episode does not fit at all into the overall plot of the book, despite the fact it fills half the pages. I skimmed through so many of the pages its ridiculous. Awful, awful, awful.
- There is absolutely no reason to give characters such absurd names. All it does to make up 13 syllable names is piss the reader off. Just stop it.
- Rishanthra is fricken stupid. Why so much focus on it? How does sex between species allow trade and communication between them? It just makes no sense, and it's really lost its novelty by this point. It comes up so often it makes Niven look like a sex-crazed teenage nerd who really doesn't know anything about sex at all.
- The "ending", if you can call it that, resolves nothing, and frankly doesn't make any sense. I know this goes back to my problem with the overall plot, but really: the ending is terrible. What happens to Louis? The ARM ships? Hindmost? Does anyone really care at this point?
- Action scenes are so terrible it makes the plot look sensible. Anytime something major happens (e.g. battle scene) I find myself rereading the paragraph 3 times and still having no idea what the hell is going on. Niven's writing is so hacky in some areas it makes me furious.
Well, I think you get the idea. I highly reccommend against this book, it was such a waste of time. Even if you loved Ringworld Engineers, I can almost guarentee you will hate this one.

Book Description
In Matter into Feeling, Dr. Wolf guides us through the conflicts and resistances we feel as physical beings--the everyday demands, addictions, successes, and failures we experience--and into an understanding that being "stuck" is only a phase, one from which we can escape once we understand the origin and role of human feeling.
Customer Reviews:
Left feeling slightly more confused than empowered........2005-07-21
After hearing a theory about astrology and alchemy being the two original sciences, and being interested in spirit and feeling, I thought "wow, this book, talking about a new alchemy of science AND spirit is going to be great". However, I think the endorsement from Deepak Chopra on the front cover says it all, Fred Alan Wolf "... one of the most important pioneers in the field of consciousness." In other words, the book itself is probably being sold more on the basis of the author's reputation than the content.
I struggled to find a concise and simple objective of the material. In the introduction Wolf talks a lot about "Mind into Matter" and how "Matter into Feeling" follows on. Well, I haven't read "Mind into Matter" so does this make it futile to read this book until I have? IF that is so, why isn't there a qualification somewhere more upfront telling the customer about this? To some extent every book must stand on its own.
I respect Dr. Jean Houston a lot, yet after reading the book could not really accept her endorsement on the back cover, or on this site.
Wolf talks of four major elements out there, but in Chinese Medicine there are five, and the Mayans also include 'ether' or energy as a fifth. Energy is a huge factor in the consciousness-matter equation and it was unclear to me how Dr Wolf treats this, and I really wanted to know his opinion.
I wasn't able to locate a simple definition of "feeling", so relied on what Gregg Braden talks about, as "feeling" being the union of emotion (as represented by the first 3 chakras) and thought (top 3), within the heart, or centre chakra. But I would have preferred to find Dr. Wolf's own concise definition.
Wolf obviously is well read and knowledgeable and has done some great work, drawing from Hebrew, Hindu, Upanishads, Da Free John, and Freudian sources. But I'm cautious in agreeing with those who may think this particular work is up there with the best.
At times the relevance and linking to the overall theme or thesis appears to be ad-hoc and hit or miss in places.
If you're looking for a less theoretical and left brain approach to communicate about feelings and how they impact the material world I suggest The Isaiah Effect by Gregg Braden.
Three stars because there are isolated insights, such as the information about the different ego states, the natural stress between spirit and matter, and how not all feelings are sensed etc., but these are too random and sparse to warrant more than an average look.
Just Silly.......2005-04-26
Wolf's attempt at an analogy between psychological change and his confused interpretation of physical transformation is just silly. I would recommend Satinover and McTaggart if you're interested in the new science.
Quantum Physics meets Kabbalah & Mysticism.......2004-07-11
Fred Alan Wolf has written many books about the new physics and the spiritual implications of theories and empirical findings in physics. Here, he expands his musings into the realm of Hebrew kabbalah, where he correlates the Hebrew letters and Kabbalistic ideas about the path of spirit into matter/form with physics concepts such as parallel universes, holographic perception, quantum non-locality, observer effects, and quantum uncertainty. It's all very interesting, although the marriage of quantum physics with kabbalah seemed a bit forced to me. I appreciate that Wolf has tried to examine the role of emotion in the mind-body-spirit feedback system, although his exploration seems incomplete and his focus on kabbalah may be distracting for those seeking a more science-oriented approach. I also wonder why Wolf still accepts the theory of the "Big Bang," when both empirical observations and hyperdimensional concepts of physics seem to contradict the Big Bang notion. Other than these flaws, which don't significantly affect the main ideas and information in the book, this is an excellent contribution to the literature in the area of spirituality, consciousness, and theoretical physics.
A Launch Pad for Personal Consciousness Transformation.......2002-09-08
Fred Alan Wolf demonstrates exquisite craftsmanship in his newest book, MATTER INTO FEELING, as he ties alchemy together with letters of the Hebrew alphabet and physics. Picking up where MIND INTO MATTER left off, Wolf serves the reader thought-provoking tastes of consciousness, memory, lucid dreams, and the awesome and exhilarating concept of the "One-Mind".
MATTER INTO FEELING is a treat for anyone who loves to contemplate ideas such as, "We don't sense what we sense; we sense what we remember we sense." And this leads us to wonder how it is that we do something so seemingly simple as remember something!
When Wolf asks us to consider things such as how the choices we make each day are much more than they appear (since according to the parallel universes model of reality, we try all possibilities, even though we typically only recall choosing one) -- MATTER INTO FEELING becomes a launch pad for personal consciousness transformation.
I love the way Wolf brilliantly combines a joyful sense of wonder with modern physical theories and ancient written texts such as the Upanishads and the Qabala. Like the best kind of chef, Wolf serves up a feast which is simultaneously exotic and familiar, yet leaves anyone who tastes it feeling hungry for more. If you love both science and spirituality, MATTER INTO FEELING is one book you're sure to adore!
