Rebecca Wells's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is rivaled by a fictional sibling: Michael Lee West's Crazy Ladies. West's tale of wild women down South is faster and snappier than Wells's thick bayou prose gumbo, but it has some of the same virtues--a cast of wacky characters, lively regional dialogue, and a satisfying multigenerational time frame. The scene shifts from 1932 to 1972, and from Crystal Falls, Tennessee, to New Orleans to hippie Frisco and L.A., though it's mostly rooted in Tennessee, where sunflower gardens contain deep secrets and kids can light up whole summers with lightning bugs in a jar.
The crazy lady who starts the story is Gussie, vexed by her ornery first daughter, Dorothy. When Dorothy's kid sister, Clancy Jane, comes of age, the real ruckus begins, thanks partly to Gussie's helpless preference for sweet Clancy Jane over dour Dorothy, who calls Gussie "Mother Dear" from age 6 on. Sweet Clancy Jane turns out to be headstrong, too--she runs off in a poodle skirt with Hart, who works on oil rigs, Esso stands, and the odd Cajun girl on the side. And then the '60s hit, bringing on Gussie's grandkids, Bitsy and Violet, plus some jolting social changes reminiscent of Lisa Alther's Kinflicks. Though it's spiced with horror (rape, crib death, one character buried alive), the dominant tone is breezy humor. At one point, the sister with "thighs that could break a man's neck" catches her husband and her shapelier sister "wrapped around each other like stripes on a candy cane." Not a magisterial novel, but a really good read. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
From the author of
Mad Girls in Love comes this lively multigenerational tale of six charming, unforgettable Southern women -- a novel of love and laughter, pain and redemption.
Though she was born in Tennessee, Miss Gussie is no country fool. A woman who can handle any situation, she has her hands full with two headstrong daughters who happen to be complete opposites -- dour Dorothy and sweet Clancy Jane. Hoping money will heal childhood wounds, Dorothy marries the owner of a five-and-dime, while Clancy Jane gets into a mess of trouble, running off with a randy tomcat who pumps gas at the Esso stand. And then there are Gussie's granddaughters, the smart but plain Violet and fancy-talking Bitsy -- a new generation whose lives will reflect a nation's tumultuous times. From Tennessee to New Orleans, from psychedelic San Francisco to a remote Southwestern desert ranch, this funny, poignant novel spans more than four decades as it vividly recounts the universal loves, sorrows, and joys of women's lives.

Strong women.......2006-12-14
A shocking incident in the early days of her marriage in the 1930's, forces Miss Gussie along a certain path in life, where she does what she has to in order to protect herself and her family. The story then follows the lives of her daughters and two more generations after that. We meet the plain ones, the pretty ones, the jealous and the open hearted in a story which connects the generations in a very real way which I enjoyed enormously and would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a light, entertaining read about women with strong character, for better or worse. This is M/s West's first novel so I look forward to finding more recent ones.
Good story.......2006-11-26
I enjoyed "Crazy Ladies". It was written in a style I like. Different characters get a chance to narrate so you are able to get other points of view on certain events. Also I like novels that extend through the years. You get to see how characters grow up and what happens to them later on in life.
The hippie stuff and anti-Vietnam was a little overdone, but other than that, I really liked this book.
She's right on the money!.......2006-10-02
This is my first MLW book and I'll hunt for more. I just moved from TN (a 30 yr native!) this summer to Chicago. I wanted to read something that reminded me of home and I got it. This book has everything and I laughed outloud several times. I could perfectly envision her characters. You'll love this book whether you're from the south or not. It's a genuinely good book. Your "hunger" for a good book will be satisfied after reading this one.
CRAZY, WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC READ!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-09
If you have not yet treated yourself to a Michael Lee West novel, then you are in for a surprise and delight! All of her books are THE BEST. This is the first one I found and I was hooked on the first page.
Crazy is what this book is! It is rich with a great story line, full of fun and surprises. The people are "true" people who you will fall in love with. The old Southern charm rings true here.
I hated to see this one end. Check out the rest of Ms. West's books; they are pure gold.
CRAZY LADIES would also make a great movie. The only problem with this book was that it ended. For me, it could have gone on and on and on ----------
Do yourself a favor and read this one. You will be glad you did.
Hated to see this book end! .......2006-06-26
"Crazy Ladies" had me temporarily rearranging my priorities and putting other things aside in order to get back to this book every chance I got. Not like me, but I don't regret a minute of it. The only downside is that now I'm finished with it and I don't want to be!
The very best thing about this book is the natural voices of the characters. I should know - I grew up and live in the same area where this story and its characters live. Not surprisingly, since Ms. West was living in this area too when she wrote "Crazy Ladies", the dialect is perfect -- genuinely colorful without being pretentious or overbearing. How refreshing!
Normally, for reasons I've never figured out, I don't like stories told in first person. This one is told in the voices of six first persons, and I loved it, probably because each one tells her part/side of the story without pontificating or rambling. Instead the story is woven together like 6 colors into one tapestry. It makes the story move along which is part of what kept me hooked.
This book has a Fannie Flagg feeling to it, but with a little less escapism and a little more real life. If you like Fannie Flagg's work, though, I can't imagine your not liking "Crazy Ladies".
From the beginning, you'll be swept up into the events of the characters' individual and collective lives, through developments banal and dramatic. Ms. West's development of her characters and the settings is phenomenal, and I'm delighted to learn she's written more including what is apparently a sequel to "Crazy Ladies". As soon as I finish this review, I'm going to order that one, and probably more!

Time Travel Back to the ' 70s.......2004-05-04
I last read this novel (several times!) in the mid-'70s after my mother recommended it to me. She described it as a funny look at the swinging singles of Manhattan. At that time, I was an English teacher who lived not far from the NYC scene, so when I first read Crazy Ladies I did so with a professional eye for characterization, plot development, theme, symbolism, and quality of writing. Elbert scores high in all those areas.
I was a single woman when the novel appeared, so I can verify the accuracy of Elbert's depiction of the culture and mood of the era. Best of all, this novel is hilarious! I still laugh when I remember the first character introduced and her reflections on the trademark portrait of Queen Victoria on Bombay Gin bottles. Do yourself a favor and read this novel if only to discover the funny yet poignant meaning of the line - "Sex says 'good-bye'" - which are the last words of a dying man.
As many times as I read the novel in the '70s, it always was fresh and amusing. Even thirtysome years later, I smile recalling the effervescent and delightful people, their problems, and their passions in this novel. Take this trip back in time and laugh away all of the stresses of the early 21st century!
The Best Ladies Book Ever Written........2001-12-05
I first read this book when I was about 13 or 14. I couldn't put it down! At the time, the 24 year age of our first character Simone, a french model, seemed OLD at the time to me...more I won't say, but I will tell you that this book has remained in my collection, though many others have come and gone.............The reason? Simple, it's THAT entertaining. We have four women whose lives are seperate, yet by the end, they're all entwined. The aforementioned Simone, a ditzy fur model, single and looking. Anita her stewardess friend who is single and desperate to be married and pregnant, especially by pilot Jack who uses her when he's so inclined. Beverly, a voluptuous housewife with a closet gay fashion editor husband, Peter. Finally Lou, a writer who works at magazine "The Rag" (nice moniker) with Peter, also single and searching................I have read this book so many times that I remember all this without having read it in a few years. The way Joyce Elbert ties them all together by the end of the book is real writing skill. I bought 5 of her titles used from the marketplace here at Amazon based on the quality of this book, and it's followup "The Return Of The Crazy Ladies", which is the PERFECT sequel. If you want to read the greatest novel for women ever written, without the sugary romance, just romantic angst and humor...try this!

Part 3 of a trilogy; All 3 are 5 star reads; Terrific stories.......2006-08-08

Nobody does it better than Heather.......2005-07-14
Unlike other authors who attempt to write about our nation's darkest hour - the War Between the States - Heather Graham really knows the period, and her careful research is evident. She wraps up her trilogy in fine style with this third volume of the Cameron family saga with the tale of the younger sister, Christa.
Brothers Jesse, who fought for the Union ("One Wore Blue") and Daniel, who fought for the Confederacy ("One Wore Gray") are happy that the war's over and they can build a future with their wives, but what is left for Christa, who lost her fiance at Cold Harbor? Jeremy MacCauley, brother to Daniel's wife Callie, has also left his heart in the smoldering ashes of the war. In a desperate effort to save the Cameron estate from a carpetbagger, Jeremy and Christa throw themselves in a marriage of convenience....and ride off together for an adventure in the west that just might include the love of a lifetime!
With a great story, sensuous romance, and sympathetic characters, this is one not to miss.
Great Follow-up.......2004-04-27
This was a great follow-up to One Wore Blue and One Wore Gray. Christa proves that she is every bit as smart, strong and determined as Daniel and Jesse. She shows a great strength in moving to the west and holds her head high with her courage and will to survive no matter the odds. Of course Jeremy shows a great deal of strength himself in dealing with Christa's headstrong attitude. Excellent book and of course great historical references as always.
Copycat..........2004-01-07
This book constantly reminded me of "Gone with the Wind" only this one had great love scenes. I found myself skipping through the boring dialog just to get to the steamy romps in the hay.
Other than that, I would prefer to rent "Gone With The Wind" instead of reading this book again.
I hated to see it end!.......2003-02-18
The war is over. Brothers, Jesse and Daniel have returned home to Cameron Hall to join their wives, children, and their only sister Christa who has kept the house standing while they fought in the war on opposite sides. She was to have wed during the war herself but her love didn't show up. She later learn he died on the battle field. Now the yankees are wanting to burn Cameron Hall down while Jesse, Daniel and their families are gone away, taking care of business, with Christa left. It is going to take a signature from a Cameron relative who is a Union supporter to save the home, and there is only 24 hrs to do it. Christa is a die-hard rebel and hates all yankees, excluding her brother Jesse. And there is only one solution as far as Christa is concerned- marry Union Colonel Jeremy McCautley, who just arrived to tell his sister Callie (Daniel's wife, Christa's sister-in-law) good-bye before he heads out west for duty. Marry and then get an annulment, that's Christa's solution. But Jeremy has other plans. Furious that Christa can make vows and then throw them away so easily, Jeremy decides to make her take them seriously. You should see the looks of everyone's faces when Jesse, Daniel, and wives come home to find Jeremy and Christa in bed together the day after their wedding (knowing how much they can't stand each other and NOT knowing nothing happened in bed). Christa is now married and finds herself packing to head out west to join her new husband, while leaving her beloved home behind. And she fights it all the way. HG does a great job of carrying all three books out from the beginning of the Civil War to the Restoration afterwards. I also appreciated her carrying the family members along so the reader really gets a sense of how their stories (Jesse, Kiernan, Daniel, and Callie) are going. The bond that the reader experiences with this family is great. I do highly recommend that the reader begin with ONE WORE BLUE and then AND ONE WORE GRAY to get the complete picture- but each book is good about bringing the reader up on what has taken place, without boring those that have read them in sequence. Well, I hated to see it end. But I have purchased them and plan on reading them again in the future, they are just that WONDERFUL!!!

A most intriguing series for readers from preteen on:.......2007-05-13
The Shadow Chidren series may be the modern alternative to The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Cherry Ames. The plot of each book-there are more than the four books of the boxed set-is captivating, as is the overall adventuresome goal of the series. My ten year old granddaughter introduced me to the Shadow Children after she had completed the first book. I both purchased and read all the books before giving them to her to make certain that all is wholesome. Parents and/or prospective readers be assured that the Shadow Children series will be enjoyed by everyone. Then, the variety of other books by Haddix will be enjoyed as well.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!.......2007-04-08
My son (who is 13) has a hard time reading a complete book, due to his short attention span. A friend suggested this series of books to us. I couldn't be happier. This series is so interesting that he read all of the books within two weeks!!!! As a parent, I enjoyed them also! This is the best deal on the web for this set.
for parents too!.......2007-03-14
My 9-year-old daughter introduced me to this series, saying I had to read them. Well, I did, I'm now near the end of book 5, and they're riveting. The plot is well-written, unpredictable, tense and believable. I especially appreciate how Haddix depicts the struggles these kids go through as they make their decisions on how to act, and how ultimately they make the right choices. Not always, and that is shown as well. It is certainly written for young readers, so goes very fast for an adult reading, but thoroughly enjoyable. I keep wondering why nobody has made movies out of Haddix's books? This would be a great one. Don't push it aside thinking "It's a kid book." Give it a chance.
Can't put it down.......2007-02-05
I could not put these books down. They are short enough to read in one sitting, but still left me satisfied and pensive. The story never dragged and I found myself unable to keep from outwardly expressing fear, anger, relief, and shock.
These are books for everyone. The stories are entertaining with many twists and the plot is thought provoking as many books about futuristic societies tend to be.
slow at shipping.......2007-01-10
The books are fine, they were for my son and he loves them. But it took over a month to receive them. Very slow shipping.

OUT OF HIDING. INTO DANGER.
Luke Garner is an illegal third child. All his life has been spent in hiding. Now, for the first time, Luke is living among others. He has assumed a deceased boy's identity and is attending Hendricks School for Boys, a windowless building with cruel classmates and oblivious teachers. Luke knows he has to blend in, but he lives in constant fear that his behavior will betray him.
Then one day Luke discovers a door to the outside. He knows that beyond the walls of Hendricks lie the secrets he is desperate to uncover. What he doesn't know is whom he can trust -- and where the answers to his questions may lead him...
Download Description
Luke Garner is terrified. Out of hiding for the first time in his life, he knows that any minute one of his new classmates at Hendricks School for Boys could discover his secret: that he's a third child passing as the recently deceased Lee Grant. And in a society where it's illegal for families to have more than two children, being a third child means certain death at the hands of the dreaded Population Police. His first experience outside the safety of his home is bewildering. There's not a single window anywhere in the school; Luke can't tell his classmates apart (even as they subject him to brutal hazing); and the teachers seem oblivious to it all. Desperate to fit in, Luke endures the confusion and teasing until he discovers an unlocked door to the outside, and a chance to understand what is really going on. But to take this chance -- to find out the secrets of Hendricks -- Luke will need to put aside his fears and discover a courage that a lifetime in hiding couldn't thwart. Once again, best-selling author Margaret Peterson Haddix delights her fans with this spine-tingling account of an all-too-possible future. Among the Impostors is a worthy companion to Among the Hidden and a heart-stopping thriller in its own right.

Alana's 7th Grade Review - Among the Impostors.......2007-05-11
Luke Garner is an illegal third child. Mr. Talbot gets Luke a fake ID and under the name Lee Luke attends Hendricks School for boys. However, Luke's first few weeks at the school did not go as planned. He didn't know where his classes were, and at bed time his bunkmates would push him around. Later in the book Luke finds a door leading to the outdoors from Hendricks. While outside one night he meets a group of third children all using fake ID's. However, one night just when things starting going good for Luke, he saw Jason (the group's leader) sneak out of bed. Luke followed and overheard Jason on the phone with the population police ratting out four of the boys in the group. Luke figured out Jason was an informer and knocked him out. Then he carried Jason down the stairs to the nurse's office and told her that he had delirium, and had a seizure, thrashing around ranting and raving. Luke still had to save the other four boys so he quickly thought of a plan and called Mr. Talbot. The next morning Jason was arrested instead of the four boys (the work of Mr. Talbot).
I really enjoyed this book it was thrilling and suspenseful. With all of the twists and turns in this story I couldn't put the book down. I believe many others will enjoy this book as much as I did, and I highly recommend it.
Courtney's review for Among the Impostors .......2007-04-13
This book is about a boy named Luke, but he is pretending to be Lee Grant (that's his fake name). Luke goes to a school for only boys; right after coming out of hiding. Luke was very scared going into the 1st school he'd ever gone too. When Luke gets to the school he noticed that all the teachers didn't take roll to see who was in class. But of course there were hall monitors so you couldn't skip class. Then one day he found a door, cracked open a little. So he went through the door to find that it led to the outside. When he was outside he noticed there were no windows in the school at all; not even one. Also while Luke was out side he started to build a garden. But after a few days the garden had been trampled by kids that must have already known about the door. So one day Luke followed the boys outside to listen and learn; then he revealed himself. Luckily for Luke they accepted Luke into there group; but mainly because he knew Jen. Most of the kids were shadow children too; so Luke felt a little better being around other shadow children. So Luke started to hang out with them. They helped him through some of the days through school; but one day Luke discovered that one of the kids in the group was working for the population police; and was going to betray them all by turning them in to the population police. The trader was the leader of the group, Jason. So Luke acted without thinking and knocked Jason out; then pulled him to the nurse. Then the next day the population police came to the school looking for illegal 3rd children; but only the ones who had betrayed them were taken away. This book was very exciting and suspenseful and I would recommend this book to anyone (but you might want to read the 1st book of the series before you read this one).
Katie's reveiew of Among The Imposters.......2007-03-16
In among the imposters Luke has to figure out how to be Lee Grant who died in an accident just weeks ago. As he was just aimlessly wondering the classes he noticed that the teachers did not check to see who was in the class but just went on with class. He also noticed that there were no windows at all. Later he found a door by accident that lead outside. He stayed out the rest of the day. He started to plant a garden but it was pulverized by others that aparently alredy knew about the door. He finaly got up the courage to follow them. when he got out from behind the tree there was an ocwerd silence. Later they accepted him into there group. He also found out that pretty much all of the other kids were in hiding as well. He follows one of his new friends and finds out that he was going to betray them all. This ends up being a fight for life or death. Luke takes the unconcous boy to the nurse and comes up with a pretty convincing story. Then the police orrive in the morning every one was frozen in fear because if they had there reel names and knew where they where they would be killed. But in the end only the traters were taken ayway. This is a very exiting and suspensfull book and I highly sugest you reed it.
Great 2nd Book in Shadow Children Series.......2007-02-22
Among the Impostors was very scary when Luke first got to Hendricks school for boys cause he had to meet new people like Elodie aka Nina,Trey,Jason(impostor). It was also scary when they took Nina to jail and had Luke hit Jason on the nose with his textbook to knock him out in the end.I liked it when Luke was trying to run away in the forest but Jason(impostor)caught up to him and Luke hit his nose on the branch and got a bloody nose.
Shadow.......2007-01-22
The book Among the Imposters by Margaret Peterson Haddix is an amazing, intense sequel to the book Among the Hidden. It is about a boy Luke who gets a new identity, and is enrolled into Hendricks School for Boys. During his first few months at school, he notices many sstanrge things. After one night when he follows some boys out of the school into the woods, he listens to them talk and finds out they are also shadow children. This goes through his adventure trying to keep it a scecret that his really name isn't Lee Grant.
This book is an amzing book that takes you on a wild adventure through Luke's life at school. He has to handle a lot of rude people at first, but after a while he makes friends. I like the way the author made this book, so you would not be able to put it down. I loved that Luke risked almost everything to find another shadow child at his school. It was kind of scary when he thinks that he has lost everything and is caught. Will he get caught or not? It makes you really wonder how life would be if this were real. When you read this book, you will not be able to put it down. I can't wait to find out what happens in the following books!

It will give you hope and show you the power that you have as being a WOMEN...........I suggest that any women that has been fought by the enemy, whether it's been by an abusive husband, a sick child, a drug addict love one, an unruly coworker, a lack of finances or depression. This book will cause you to war in the spirit and take back what the enemy took from you..............
Very knowledgeable of the battle that women face today........1998-10-16
Great scripture verses to check out. Down to earth examples of today's problems facing woman. I'm in a Sunday School class on spiritual warfare and after reading 1/3 of this book I'm ordering 25 copies. I'm going to give them to other prayer warriors who know what Jesus Christ was talking about when He stated that there are forces that only the Holy Spirit can handle. But we have the power of Prayer throught reading the Bible and intercessary prayer - devotions. Praise GOD we are in the "end times" for the evidence that we can stand in the gap to pray for others. I've been married over 34 yrs and my wife (Sandy) may need operation(s) on her nerve system and she just lost her job. Keep her in prayer. Mark Kwiatkowski
