Unanswered Anticipation.......2007-05-22
I am usually an enraptured fan of Capote's work. Unfortunately, I have to agree with most of his critics and former friends on this one. He plays around with a work that can be either a confessional or a gossip column or an introspection of fringe society. I was disappointed that his beautiful and haunting words were affected by his alcoholic and drug-induced ramblings. His talent for invoking tragic images without being crass was lost here.
Unanswered gems.......2007-04-11
Although "Answered Prayers" can be read as dated since most of it's "characters" live in the 1960's and 1970's, there is still marvelous prose and stories that pique the interest. Capote had promised to complete several short stories for this tome, but this collection contains only three. All of them are marvels to read, but the last, "La Cote Basque", is a stinging expose of the New York Socialite clique. Not only does Capote mention real celebrities, but he also exposes the deepest and darkest secrets of high society with a thin veil. It's no wonder he was ostracized from this egregious group. Some of the events he describes are beyond scandalous, yet witty and viciously funny. He somehow manages to bring the `so-called' social deviants to the same level as the most respected socialites, making it clear that money is the only difference.
The Editor's Note is the most intriguing part of the book, as it describes how Capote managed to promise to produce these stories for years without delivering and obtained millions from the publishers, enabling him to live with a high level of social activity. He was a celebrity as well as an author and a clever, if not conniving man. The biggest tragedy is that so many stories will never be read due to his early alcoholic induced death. Still, these three stories are inspired gems.
answered prayers.......2006-05-26
Oh My GOD! This is by far one of the most disturbing, amazingly tragic books that I have ever read. Buy this book and feel the pain and suffering that only Truman Capote can emote in the written word. Damn him for not finishing it, and pity us for being denied the finished work.
ACID CAPOTE.......2006-04-10
To read this odd book is to get a real look at Truman Capote at the end of his life. Capote was vain, bitchy, narcissistic, but alas the profoundly weird old queen was fascinating. He was truely unique, he made himself a superstar, he willed it so, this man was nakedly ambitious, he makes Trump look like a piker. This book ruined him and probably led to increased alcoholism, that ultimatly caused his death at sixty. When he wrote an excert of this book in a top magazine of the day, he became persona non grata among the brahman class of New York. This was Capote's own personal hell. It shows his arrogance and narcissism that he did not see that a book like this would make these people close ranks and ostracize him, he was stunned that they stopped taking his calls and dropped him from their party lists, they broke his heart and frankly I'm sure the parties were considerable less amusing with Truman gone. In this book you see in Capote a really unhappy man, that relished in the misfortune of others, but having said that I do find his dish very interesting, what does that say about me, lol. I believe that after he became a sensation after the great In Cold Blood, he really was paralized, he knew people expected another book of singular greatness, I think this absolutely destroyed him and he was so desperate that he conceived this ill advised book, it makes you understand why Harper Lee and J.D. Salinger never published a book after their masterpieces, Truman should have looked to his childhood friend Lee as an example, but he could not resist the spotlight and he wanted that feeling of adulation again. I recommend this book, it is not Capote's best work, of course, but it is something of a memoir and you get an unflinching look at this complex man.
Capricious Capote.......2006-02-08
Capote's unfinished work is definitely worth reading but read his other stuff first. It takes a seasoned Capote fanatic to really enjoy this book. It is a shame that he never finished it. After reading "Kate McCloud" I could not wait to find out what would happen next, but I guess no one will ever know. And we all want to read La Cote Basque 1965 to get the real dirt.
But the truth is that Capote was indeed a gifted writer who left us very little to read. So take it all in, even these "tell all" stories that have less significance than his earlier work.

Book Description
Blackboard bestselling author Beverly Jenkins delivers another lush historical novel featuring brothers that were first introduced in her award–winning novel Always and Forever. This is the story that readers have been waiting for.
He was a wanted man.
But no one wanted him more than she did.
Desperate to escape an arranged marriage, Olivia Sterling flees Chicago and heads west. She dreams of setting up her own seamstress shop in Henry Adams, a small all Black town in Kansas. But her plans are derailed when her train is robbed by Neil July and his notorious band of outlaws.
Neil is enchanted by the headstrong and lovely Olivia. No woman has ever set his blood on fire before, and he suspects no other woman ever will. When they meet again, Olivia is the town's newly elected mayor and Neil is still the wanted outlaw. With bounty hunters on his trail, he would be wise not to linger, yet he can't seem to leave her. Will Neil be able to convince Olivia to ride off into the sunset with him? Or will he finally lay down his guns for love?

Mayor Meets the Outlaw.......2007-08-07
As always Beverly Jenkins delivered another knock out book. I have been a fan of hers for years. I eagerly await each new novel. The romance, the drama and history lessons she provides in each book is enlightening. I would love to meet a man like Neil and Two Shafts myself. Olivia played her role as intelligent black woman, but also showed her sensual side as well. God help us all if we had to marry men our fathers chose based on a business deal.
Not enough "romance" in this "romance novel"........2007-07-28
Believe me when I say I wanted desperately to like this book. I have been searching for years to find an African-American historical romance novel.
My critique with this story is not the "idea", the idea in itself is brilliant: a beautiful headstrong woman out West alone who meets a very virile & handsome outlaw who is just as attracted to her as she is to him. It wasn't until I had gotten half way through the book did I realize that although there was chemistry between our heroine and this outlaw nothing was happening. It was as if they were both AFRAID of one another. I know it was suppose to be because she was "innocent" and he was "wanted in her town". However I couldn't help but ponder why Mrs Jenkins the author didn't have the characters flirt more with one another. This BUBBLEGUM romance won't make you blush in the least. I bought the book 3 months ago and couldn't finish it.
Another great story from Mrs Jenkins.......2006-10-20
This is another great connecting story. Read Night Song, Topaz, The Taming of Jessie Rose, Always and Forever to get the background on the town of Henry Adams, Kansas and on the secondary characters. Hope Two Shafts, Teresa and Preacher meet their match in the future.
Beverly Jenkins never disappoints.......2006-08-04
Beverly Jenkins never disappoints her followers. She is an excellent writer with undescrible talent. I was never a fan of historical romances until I read one of her books. Her style and descriptions of whatever period her stories are set in are so clear and concise till I can see myself living in whatever period she is writing about. I enjoy her stories so much and have met other readers that feel the same way. Please keep them coming!
WOW!!!.......2006-07-27
I couldn't put this book down if I wanted too. I first read about Neil and his Brother Two Shaft in The Taming Of Jessi Rose and fell in love with them both. I couldn't stop laughing at there antics I actually read the book again. I really can't wait for Two Shafts story or that of there sister. Keep up the good work Ms. Jenkins:)

Book Description
The delirious pursuit of love is a search that inevitably takes us all both down the well-beaten path and into new, uncharted territory. In this collection of thirty-three heart-tugging and hilarious essays, celebrated Electronic Urban Report columnist Steven Ivory chronicles his lifelong quest for that thing we all crave: The Meaningful Relationship.
The journey begins with his first love -- his mother -- before making an amusing pilgrimage through lust-filled adolescent affections, an awkward introduction to sex, and a series of poignant and funny adventures of unrequited love, bungled blind dates, and the Ones That Got Away.
Propelled by a wit rivaled only by a willingness to bare his soul, Ivory's revelations on kissing, game-playing, sexual satisfaction, and personal insecurities culminate in a startling, life-altering discovery that touches your funny bone as well as your heart.
Customer Reviews:
Outrageous!.......2006-03-06
I love this book! If you're a fool in love and searching for Mr/Mrs Right, this book will do it for you. Read it, I'll betcha you enjoy it! It's funny, witty and romantic and it will give you some interesting ideals for your next date!
Funny & Nostalgic.......2006-02-17
I didn't want to put this book down! I appreciate the nostalgia found in Mr. Ivory's descriptive childhood stories. Each about his mother and friends were particularly endearing.
I expected his adult romantic recollections to be graphic, but was pleased that he was able to convey his memories without the use of totally explicit language. At times, however, I needed to skim a paragraph to avoid feeling uncomfortable. I recommend this book for it's humor and good-natured stories, but would discourage anyone offended by occasional explicit language.
Excellent!.......2005-09-21
Admittedly I'm a Steven Ivory fan. I've read his column in Electronic Urban Report from the beginning. This book exceeded even my expectations and leaves me looking forward to the next one......
Soul Food!.......2004-09-08
Steven Ivory took me on a journey that satisfied my hunger for intellect and served me humor for dessert! What a joy to read such an honest and poignant work on love and relationships from the male point of view. A secret window through which to gaze upon the masculine spirit, Ivory offers a rare treasure for a women everywhere; as well as a "What, you too?!" for the men. Write on my brother, write on.
What a Birthday Gift!.......2004-07-15
My husband gave me this thing for my birthday and I have to say it is one of the best gifts he ever gave me. I have always been a Steve Ivory fan. I read his weekly column every week on the EUR website. However, recently, I had a bad experience with laser eye surgery and I haven't been able to see clearly let alone read for the past four months. My doctor gave me the okay to read again after my last visit and Mr. Ivory's Fool in Love was just what a girl needed to welcome sight back in her life. I love this book, it is so funny, and every story is about him, something he should write about more in his weekly column.

Book Description
Again and again in this collection, Andreas Thomas returns to this mysterious predicament: why is it that the human being seems to take such a perverse, if guilt-ridden, delight in actively shunning the good? Life would obviously be easier for us all if we loved our neighborand though we have clear instructions on just how to accomplish that we refuse to follow them!
The real why is not whether God exists but why did He choose to prove to us that His Creation was truly an act of Love. By sacrificing His own Son to the very human mystery of Death, God has reopened, in effect, the road to communication between the sacred and the profane

Overall, good work.......2005-12-15
The author's voice is true and authentic. Some of the work here gives us something to think about. As a reader, I learn about the poet's own personal perspectives, which I enjoyed. Sarcasm and satire usually aren't keys to religious texts of this nature; I'm glad the author chose to include them at various times. Overall, good work.
not merely words.......2005-12-13
LOVE SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING LIKE THAT is beautiful. It insightfully connects political problems of today, science, and other non-religious subjects to showcase our need of God. This poetry is not merely words, but evoked thought and emotion as I read it. I consider that success!
Love is Nothing Like That.......2005-11-09
LOVE SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING LIKE THAT surprisingly takes the reader through a discourse on the many things love is not. And in doing so, we are taught what love should and could be, if we took the time to change the way we think about love.
Andreas Thomas' voice is one of admonishment and sometimes pain. In his poem "as it were great drops of blood..." he almost seems to cry for mankind's lack of vision. He speaks in the voice of our creator, who is just as baffled about what we consider to be our show of love. He writes, "And we who say we worship you and love you cannot see those drops of blood..." Thomas repeats this theme throughout his works, asking the same question from different perspectives, basically, what do we know of love?
The answer is always the same. We claim to know love, but our actions display otherwise. We claim to know what love is like, but clearly cannot see how our muddled understanding of the word, the world, our greed and our desire to have power, blocks us from acting on a notion that suggests purity of being and thought.
LOVE SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING LIKE THAT clears away the nonsense and cuts right to the core of the problem--perception. Thomas clearly shows us that what we perceive to be love is far removed from our creator and not in alignment with the true definition of love.
This compilation of works is filled with depth and clarity and speaks not with authority, but from the voice of those who have felt the pinch of false love, or more appropriately, evil in disguise-like a wolf in sheep's clothing.

There are times when Judith Lassiter feels content, perhaps even happy. She is content to be married to a well-heeled architect who graciously remembers their fifteenth anniversary with fifteen red roses. She is content with Green Diamonds, the house her husband designed, the envy of their acquaintances. She is content with her life in the town of Wyfleet, content with her financial status, even content with her appearance. Then why does Judith write herself imaginary love letters in the solitude of her bedroom? Why does she take on a very real lover several years her junior? Why does she believe she can redeem her life only by taking another's, employing the unlady-like recourse of a professional hit man?

Product Description
Constituting the largest reference work on "Doctor Who" ever written, the six-volume "About Time" strives to become the ultimate reference guide to the worldÂ’s longest-running science fiction program. Written by Lawrence Miles ("Faction Paradox") and long-time sci-fi commentator Tat Wood, "About Time" focuses on the continuity of "Doctor Who" (its characters, alien races and the like), but also examines the show as a work of social commentary. In particular, Miles and Wood dissect the politics and social issues that shaped the show during its unprecedented 26-year run (from 1963 to 1989), detailing how the issues of the day influenced this series. As part of this grand opus, About Time 1 examines "Doctor Who" Seasons 1 to 3 (1963 to 1966) -- the show's every beginnings, with William Hartnell in the lead role. Among other things, About Time 1 answers such vitally important "Who" questions as "Can You Change History, Even One Line?", "What's the Timeline of the Daleks?" and "Is His Name Really Who?"
Customer Reviews:
A great history..........2007-08-05
not only of the start of a great show, but also details British television history and pop culture to put it into a larger context. Sometimes academic, sometimes fanwankish, but never tiresomely pedantic or boring. Can't wait to pick up the next volumes.
Nearly definitive, practically essential.......2006-03-04
The "About Time" books are kind of like TV's Dr. Gregory House. He's smug, rude, disdainful, and in general a colossal pain the butt. On the other hand, he's RIGHT so much of the time, and just so darned interesting to be around that you just can't tell him to stuff it and leave. These books are the same way. "About Time 1" is the first volume of the series in terms of content, but the fourth to be published, and the weirdly two-faced attitude the authors have displayed since the beginning continues to assert itself pretty forcefully. They regularly take what can only be described as "potshots" at both the show itself and the show's fans. Almost every positive comment about one of the stories covered in this book is accompanied by a despairing, off-handed lament about how much worse the show became later on. Wood and Miles also frequently ridicule various examples of silly and/or obsessive fan behavior. Yet even while they're spending so much time slagging off both their subject matter and their intended audience, by creating such an exhaustive and erudite examination of "Doctor Who," they're implicitly showing both show and fans a substantial amount of respect.
And authorial biases aside, the books just keep getting better. Either by accident or by design, each successive volume seems to go deeper in its analyses, to be more insightful and, thus, more entertaining than the one before. "About Time 1" deals with the first three seasons of the show, from its 1963 inception to the 1966 story "The War Machines," so in this volume we get a hugely enlightening look at the cultural and technological environment in which the show was born and the various societal and literary contexts that informed each story. As an American born in the early 1970s, these informative "Where Does This Come From?" subsections were unfailingly interesting. We also get two dozen new sidebar essays explaining various tangential matters in great depth; some are literary, such as "What Kind of Future Did We Expect?"; some are somewhat scientific, such as "What Makes the TARDIS Work?", which touches on some rudimentary quantum physics; and some are metatextual, such as "What Are These Stories REALLY Called?"
So if you are anything more than a casual fan of "Doctor Who," I would honestly say that you owe it to yourself to own, or at least read, these books. Regardless of the aforementioned problems, when all is said and done I think the "About Time" series will stand as the definitive analysis of TV's longest-running sci-fi program. Like Dr. House, its personal shortcomings won't be able to disguise the fact that it's simply unbeatable in its chosen field.
Detailed.......2006-02-25
Lawrence and Tat continue their absolutely exhaustive review of the whole of Doctor Who. Yet again ther eis more information than you can shake a stick at. This time we explore the Hartnell era with emphasis on the cultural and political landscape at the time. Essential for the serious fan

Intense.......2007-10-07
This book offers intense insights on every page. I am learning and grasping so much from it's content, that it is blowing my mind. So many books offer not even a fraction of what this book offers of such keen analysis and revelations. And this one just keeps coming and coming with well put examples, instructions and analysis of "self esteem" and how it manifests and affects us and to the degree that it functions. Wow. I'm loving this book, and also, my own low sense of self esteem wonders "can I begin to employ what this book is teaching me?" "Why didn't I figure this out before, or by myself?" HA! It's good stuff, and I highly recommend it.
Read this book!!!!.......2007-07-16
Wow..I've only read half of this book and I find it amazing how accurate it is in analyzing my psyche, and I'm sure lots of other people's also. I bought this book to find some answers about life in general and as I read it, it was as if the author knew exactly the type of person I was and explained it in such a concise way. I was literally learning things about myself just by reading his explanations on why we think the way we do and how self-esteem influences all aspects of our life. The first half of the book is basically his theory on the effects of self-esteem and he integrates examples of some of his patients. These examples are so true to life that it can easily be me or you. The second half of the book is about how we can improve our self esteem but I haven't read through it yet. But...I never review books online before this, but I just gotta say that if you have any issues with ur identity, doing some self introspection, or just plain interested in psychology, you should buy this book. Best 8 dollars i've ever spent.
happy customer.......2007-03-11
This book not by any means "easy reading" but it does contain vital truths that have the ability to change your life. I always go back to it to use as a resource.
Life Changing.......2005-09-13
After only getting through half of Branden's book, I literally wept and felt as if I weight I had been carrying around for years had suddenly been lifted from my shoulders. I have many, many self help books; however, never have I read a book that allowed me to see myself so clearly. I have so many Post-It notes throughout this book and I have already gone out tonight to buy it for a friend. An example of the power of the author's words is an understanding that in every instance of self-esteem anxiety, there is a conflict in the form of "I must/should have" versus "I cannot/did not," Branden states, "there is always a conflict between, on the one hand, some value imperative that is tied, in a critical and profound way, to the person's self-appraisal and inner equilabrium, and, on the other, some failure, inadequacy, action, emotions, desire, or fantasy that the person regards as a break of that imperative..." When I am suffering an anxiety attack or become overwhelmed at the thought of something, it is usually this clash between these two - the value imperative and feelings of inadequacy. It makes much more sense if you RUN out and buy this book. Or, an explanation of "happiness anxiety" - never spoken about, but truly explained here well. As I said, this book has literally changed my life and given my life back to me.
Wonderfully inspiring!.......2004-02-18
Oh, where do I start... Life has so many layers and we are so blind to most of them as long as we refuse to see through those layers on the surface. The surface looks so attractive, exciting, and fun, and it makes us greedy, it makes us critical, it makes us feel temporarily important and powerful, it makes us buy many things we don't really need... It all looks so exciting and beautiful that it convinces many of us that we don't need to look further inside. But once we learn to see what is inside, all of that seems empty, meaningless, and nothing more than a temporary escape from the emptiness we are actually feeling. The deeper we learn to see inside ourselves, the more we clearly begin seeing what is truly important, what is truly meaningful. This book allowed me start this learning process. Needless to say, it is truly a wonderful thing! This book and this one other brilliant book called the "Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato explains this in such a excellent way that I cannot say enough about them. All I can say is, if you are ready to look deeper, it is time you pick up these books. Good luck!
