Book Description
In 1871, nineteen men, women, and children, voyaging on the Arctic explorer USS Polaris found themselves cast adrift on an ice floe as their ship began to founder. Based on one of the most remarkable events in polar history, Afterlands tells the haunting story of this small society of castaways -- a white and a black American, five Germans, a Dane, a Swede, an Englishman, and two Inuit families -- and the harrowing six months they spend marooned in the Arctic, struggling to survive both the harsh elements and one another. As the group splinters into factions along ethnic and national lines, rivalries -- complicated by sexual desire, unrequited love, extreme hunger, and suspicion -- begin to turn violent. Steven Heighton's provocative novel fills in the blanks of the Polaris's documented history and explores the shattering emotional and psychological consequences faced by those who survive.

This was a good book........2007-02-16
This book was surprisingly good. It wasn't like anything I'd read before, but I enjoyed it.
Wow! This guy can write........2007-02-01
I'll tell you up front, I'm only a third of the way through this book. However, I am continually blown away by the way Mr. Heighton weilds the written word. SOme people try to write the way he does and its just flat and verbose. He gives life to these characters and to this story the way hot air fills out a multi-colored balloon and lifts it high into far blue sky. I am awed.
A book that stays with you.......2006-04-20
Afterlands is a densely but beautifully written novel. It's not an overnight read or a beach read, yet the main story is so gripping that you feel driven to read it fast, while also savouring the language. The characters are all richly developed and they stay with you after you finish, like the story itself.
after Afterlands..........2006-03-11
A fantastic story written well.
I was afraid I was going to lose interest after the main plotline seemed to end 2/3rds of the way through and the author had to start inventing his own story a bit more, but it only got better.
Recommended.

Valentine legacy.......2007-02-07
It was a good story, and I have horses so it was fun.
Good but not great..........2006-06-10
Description from the back of the book:
In the early 1820's, horse racing was a down and dirty sport. James Wyndham, who owns racing stables in both England and America, finds his racing nemesis in red-haired Jessie Warfield, renowned hoyden and champion jockey, who knows as many dirty racing tricks as James does. When either wins a race, the other's nose gets rubbed in the dirt.
Jessie has known James for six years, since she was fourteen years old. She often wants to kick him for the way he treats her, but more importantly, she adores him. She just doesn't know how to show it.
When chance throws Jessie out of a tree, finding her on top of James, she is pronounced Ruined. When she decides to run, she really goes for it, all the way to England, to James's cousins, Marcus and Duchess Wyndham.
James arrives, laden with guilt, to find a Jessie who sounds like the old Jessie but isn't. Jessie has undergone a transformation worthy of Pygmalion.
Will James do the Right Thing and undo Jessie's Ruin? What about Jessie's nightmares that seem to call up something terrible from her childhood?
There's a treasure to be found on the Outer Banks, a mystery to be solved, a love story that will plant a smile on your mouth for a long time, and lots of laughter.
* This is the 3rd & final book in the legacy series. This was probably my 2nd favorite. I didn't enjoy the treasure in this book. I didn't care for the scene that played out when the treasure was found. I predicted the villain very easily & the cow brains beside Jessie's head grossed me out when they had their first intimate moment. Other then those things the books was good & kept me going but I wouldn't call this story great. Overall I'd say that I'd probably read this series again but I could truly take it or leave it. It's not a series that will stick with you the next book you read.
A winner by Coulter!.......2005-08-18
No, I would not give this a 5 just because the characters were not as intense and besotted as I like in a Coulter novel - but there is one thing I love about all Coulter novels - it is the way she intertwines the characters from all of her novels - even though they are not even part of the same series - the fact that Marcus and the Dutchess named their son Anthony Welles - that was just so touching - it is like Catherine totally feels like all of these people are all real to her and that is why so many of them seem real to us! This novel was in part not quite as compelling because of the horse racing theme - no nearly as interesting as events in Britain - and truly the mothers in this book should be banned from both families. Jesse grew on me - where as James just seemed a little stiff - I did not see them as the greatest love of all time - like I have felt in other Coutler books - especially in the Night series and Devil series. i really could have cared less about the burried treasure although I guess going back there relieved Jesse's nitemares and perhaps made James realize he loved her truly - although he did wait awhile to tell her. I would always recommend a Coulter book almost before anyone and she is almost the only author that her contempoary are as good as her historical!
Valentine Legacy.......2004-04-26
Wonderful, I think I've re-read atleast 3 times.
Do not read this book!.......2003-06-02
Do not under any circumstances read this book. I love Catherine Coulter and think her books are wonderful but was sadly disapointed with the Valentine Legacy. The caracters are boring, there is absolutly no romance and no sparks between James and Jesse and it makes for a very long and boring book!

A Forgotten Spirituality.......2007-05-05
Kingdom Come is a book whose time is long overdue. Finally a book that takes seriously and explores in depth the grace-centered, counter-cultural theology of two giants among Churches of Christ from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, Elders James A. Harding (1848-1922) and David Lipscomb (1831-1917).
While not ignoring these men's roles in the brotherhood disputes that ultimately led to the 1906 split bewteen the Disciples of Christ and the Church of Christ (both men acted on principle in this matter, and Lipscomb in particular resisted choosing sides until he felt he had no choice), the book nevertheless finds much to commend in their deeply grace-centered, counter-cultural theology, a theology of grace and an openness to the power of the Holy Spirit that predominated in many sections of the Brotherhood until the mid-twentieth century. Valentine has argued persuasively elsewhere that a kind of religious modernism overcame large segments of the Church of Christ beginning in the early years of the twentieth century. The early grace-centered, counter-cultural, pacifistic unity and reform-driven impetus of the Stone-Campbell Reformation was largely abandoned in favor of a cold, legalistic theology in which much more attention was given to ecclesiology, plans and patterns and a correct understanding of baptism; the role and work of the Holy Spirit was relegated to a "Word-only" operation on the believer as he or she read the Bible, and the literal indwelling was explained away as so much "denominational twaddle" in the words of one early "Word-only" advocate.
The book examines for example, Lipscomb's forgotten pacifism and aversion to Christian participation in civil government; indeed Foy E. Wallace, Jr., referred to Lipscomb's 1889 book "Civil Government" as "about as rank with false doctrine as one little book of its size could be," and suggested that anyone owning a copy should burn it! Consequently, Lipscomb is primarily remembered in Churches of Christ for his largely conservative stance on the issues that lead to the split; Lipscomb's counterculturalism and premillennial leanings, not to mention his progressive views regarding racial equality in the church, are less well-known, and often overlooked in published biographies of the man. As well, Harding's opposition to modernistic, rationalistic trends among Churches of Christ and his fight for an understanding of the literal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in each baptized believer, as opposed to the predominant "Word-only" theory is also not often known.
The authors also show us what impact the theology of Lipscomb and Harding, transmitted in large part through their Nashville Bible School (NBS), had on other well-known evangelists in our brotherhood, such as Robert H. Boll (1875-1956) and Grover Cleveland "G. C." Brewer (1884-1956).
The authors are to be commended for restoring the "distant voices" of Harding and Lipscomb to modern readers; like the "founders" Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell, the real views of these men are often over-simplified, caricatured, misunderstood, or ignored. Whether one ultimately agrees with all of the views of Lipscomb and Harding, the authors do a commendable job of portraying two very human, yet devoted men of God, as well as the very real diversity of thought among Churches of Christ (for example, probably very few modern CoC members are aware that for many decades there were premillennial congregations, led by former NBS student RH Boll and others, within the Church of Christ brotherhood). There is much of value the modern church can learn from these giants of the past if we will only listen. One wishes the authors would at some point produce a more scholarly treatment of this subject, still, though written in sort of a devotional book style, with questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, there is much meat and substance in the present work. My only real criticisms are the lack of more lengthy quotes by Lipscomb and Harding and the lack of an index and a bibliography, but I understand the authors were trying to target as wide an audience as possible, hence did not wish to encumber the book with too-lengthy quotations and sources. I believe they have succeded admirably. This book belongs in the library of any serious student of the Stone-Campbell Movement and any serious Christian in Churches of Christ.
Challenging, thought-provoking, even a bit disturbing..........2006-10-07
Anybody who is serious about their Christian walk needs to read a book like this. Genuine Christianity is inherently counter-cultural, and this book makes this point time and again by looking at some of the 'lost history' of churches of Christ.
Most chapters are divded into three sections. The first portion gives historical evidences of ways in which David Lipscomb and James A. Harding (and, to a lesser extent, such successors to their traditions like RH Boll and JH Armstrong) lived out their understanding of Christ and his church; the second gives evidence as to why their understandings and lifestyles were solidly Biblical, and the final portion of each chapter tries to make this more applicable to the reader.
At times the applications are perhaps not always clear, but this could possibly come from my own immersion with modern culture. Our selling out to the ways of the world makes the reality of Biblical teaching to be what is difficult; perhaps this is why such books (as well as reading scripture itself, especially the gospels and prophets) are so important in our modern, increasingly secularistic world. Such counter-cultural ideas, even if they are old and true, do not allow us to be comfortable, which for many has become the ultimate goal of life.

The Legacy Series (The Wyndham Legacy, The Valentine Legacy,The Nightingale Legacy)
Catherine Coulter
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000WKR2BI |
Product Description
The Wyndham Legacy - The Earl of Chase's illegitimate daughter Josephina Cochrain, nicknamed "the Duchess" by her antagonistic cousin Marcus Wyndham because of her precocious self-possession, unexpectedly becomes both legitimate and an heiress upon her father's death. His nephew Marcus receives the title but little else; Josephina inherits most of the money but will lose it all unless she weds her obnoxious cousin. *** The Nightingale Legacy - It's 1814, and the young, long-haired, brooding Lord Chilton, Frederick North Nightingale, who briefly appeared in The Wyndham Legacy, is on his way from his Cornish castle, Mount Hawke, to London when he stops at an inn for the night. There, he meets the smart, beautiful and feisty 19-year-old Caroline Derwent-Jones, who has just escaped Roland Ffalkes, her lecherous, inheritance-seeking guardian, and is en route to the Cornish home of her aunt, Eleanor Penrose. North protects Caroline from Ffalkes, who shows up unexpectedly, but she departs before the nobleman can tell her that her aunt, whom he knew, has been murdered. North and Caroline soon meet again, though, and before long he accepts her proposal of marriage-much to the horror of his three misogynist male servants, appalled that the union will break the long-standing tradition of no women living at Mount Hawke.*** The Valentine Legacy - Refusing to marry James Wyndham, the man she has loved secretly for years, outspoken, naive Jessie Warfield escapes to England and the estate of James's cousins? and a life as a "nanny." However, when James comes to fetch her, a group of delightful meddlers make certain that they end up neatly married instead. Old secrets, a pirate's legacy, and a cast of wonderful characters are part of this funny, lively, and occasionally mysterious story that provides a satisfactory conclusion to Coulter's "Legacy" trilogy

If Sheri Tepper and Robert Heinlein co-authored a novel..........2007-07-10
...it probably still wouldn't turn out nearly as intelligent and readable as Legacy. (Besides, they'd probably argue constantly.) From the cover blurb and press, I expected strong characters and thought-provoking themes of gender equality and hierarchy. What I didn't expect was a page-turner, but Legacy surprised me with adventure, excitement, and really accessible characters. I can't wait to read more from this author.
Shannon would make a great BFF........2007-07-10
I spend a lot of time reading young adult fantasy (Garth Nix, Philip Pullman) and feminist fantasy (Sheri Tepper) and I really liked this book. It had a strong heroine, good description, described a different culture without being foreign-for-the-sake-of-being-foreign. But the thing I found most interesting was the idea of being a strong young woman without being set apart. Shannon isn't super-strong or super-smart, just willing to take a chance and do what her heart tells her is right despite the possible consequences, including making her friends angry. She also looks back and sees how those around her have helped her even when she did not realize it at the time. A valuable asset in a protagonist, and a good one in a person. I would highly recommend Legacy.

Desperation Measures.......2006-10-19
Horizon Storms (2004) is the third SF novel in The Saga of the Seven Suns, following A Forest of Stars. In the previous volume, Theroc is rescued from a devastating hydrogue attack by the faeros, but the Worldforest and population losses are severe. On Ildira, Prime Designate Jora'h became the Mage-Imperator.
At Rendezvous, Cesca Peroni learned that Jess Tamblyn has disappeared. On an uncharted water world, Jess found himself stranded amidst a new colony of wentals. In the Whisper Palace, Chairman Basil Wenceslas decided to colonize other planets through the Klikiss gates. In Maratha Prime, Anton Colicos and Rememberer Vao'sh settled in to enjoy the peace and quiet by studying the Saga of the Seven Suns. From her Manta, Tasia Tamblyn witnessed the snuffing of the Oncier sun by the hydrogues.
In this novel, from Whisper Palace King Peter announces a new campaign against the hydrogues using the Klikiss torch. After the ignition of the torch, he shows the broken remains of hydrogue ships to celebrating crowds on Earth. Then he lights a much smaller torch on the Royal Bridge to symbolize the victory.
On Mars, Tasia Tamblyn receives orders to use the Klikiss torch on Ptoro, an obscure planet on the fringes of human space. Her battle group sets up the wormhole generators and prepares to send a neutron star into Ptoro. Then they fire their torpedoes.
On Ptoro, DD meets human prisoners held by the hydrogues. Among them is Robb Brindle, the long lost friend of Tasia. The prisoners ask DD for help in escaping the hydrogues, but they really have little chance of leaving their quarters alive. Then the neutron star arrives and the planet becomes a star.
On Ildira, the Mage-Imperator Jora'h gathers the Designates together for the ceremony giving his father back to the light, leaving only his skeleton. After the ceremony, Jora'h is contemplating the misdeeds of his father, but his son Thor'h, the Prime Designate, interrupts his thoughts by bullying his way past the guards. When Jora'h rebukes him for using shiing, Thor'h defends his addiction.
On the water world, Jess Tamblyn learns that the wentals can construct another ship for him. After the new ship is completed, Jess returns to Rendezvous. There his return causes quite a sensation.
In Rendezvous, Cesca Peroni learns how Raven Kamarov's ship disappeared. Nikko Chan Tylar has brought back the ship remains with jazer streaked hull plates. The Roamers decide to cut off the Hansa's supply of ekti.
On Theroc, Celli discovers a mostly intact hydrogue warglobe for the EDF technicians to analyse. The damage to the trees, however, stretches further than she can see, even from Solimar's gliderbike. Later, Celli and Solimar learn that the Worldforest still enjoys their treedancing.
This novel still reads like something out of the Victorian era. Not only are the polities imperial, but the plot and dialogue are old-fashioned, like something by Rider Haggard. Maybe it goes with the territory.
Recommended for Anderson fans and for anyone else who enjoys grand adventures and wars between empires.

You've got this far for a reason...........2006-09-22
This book is just as good as the last two...In fact better as more things are made clear, plans are set into motion and other things are introduced into the mix. Mr. Anderson does not abuse his position as author by playing God. I mean that in the sense that he doesn't pull things out of his butt to solve problems. It really defines the word "struggle", the way he lays things out on paper. As some other reviewers may have complained, Mr. Anderson is not about quick fixes or the obvious. He had me guessing several times and I was completely wrong in my assumptions on where he was going; and quite pleasantly surprised. He does not insult your intelligence by spoon-feeding you and he also does not sell-out by resorting to "instant gratification" tactics that some authors do. Also, he wont hold your hand.
Everything is well thought out and very plausible. The depth of this series gets deeper and deeper, either you swim through the sea of imagination that he so expertly sets out before you...Or drown in confusion and frustration...Then take it out on the book by writing a bad review.
If you pay attention and let it flow you will be rewarded with a great story. If you don't have the patients or ability to quell attempts at trying so hard to find flaws or one-upping Mr. Anderson with what "you" would do, then best to walk away.
Already halfway into book 4 and loving it!
The Epic Continues.......2006-06-13
*Please refer to Hidden Empire and A Forest of Stars by Kevin J. Anderson.*
The Spiral Arm is in trouble. Hydrogue warships are laying waste to inhabited planets, Klikiss robots aren't the harmless machines they claim to be, stardrive fuel is scarce, and stars are being extinguished.
The Ildiran Empire is reeling with the loss of the old Mage-Imperator. The new leader's controversial policies threaten to create a rift among his close-knit people and spurs potent new enemies.
Among humans, Roamers and Therons learn to work together, while the primary government is growing desperate for resources. The de facto leader plots dangerous action against the Roamer space gypsies in order to grab material for the struggling Hansa. The discovery of instantaneous transportation portals (much like "stargates") offers hope for Hansa colonists, but unknown dangers lurk on some of the abandoned Klikiss worlds.
Although a titanic war is waged between elemental forces, the arrival of a fourth elemental species promises to change the tide for humans and Ildirans. Both species' existence depends on stopping the hydrogues--and their inscrutable allies.
Anderson displays fine mastery in the creation and consistency of the many characters and storylines. Each is a star of their own accord, contributing to the overall picture while tugging at the reader in his or her own way. As noted in previous reviews, Anderson also excels in describing lush settings without dragging the reader through pages and pages of minute detail.
Anderson's gift of story weaving continues to pull readers through a magnificent epic that will no doubt be considered a classic by future generations of sci-fi fans.

shame about the science, plot holes galore............2006-04-26
While this book and its predecesors are an entertaining read its only by gritting my teeth and ignoring the huge scientific gaffs and plot holes that I managed to finish them.
Having found that the Hydrogues can be defeated using critical cascaded the human and alien navies seem to ignore this in their development of weapons and keep fruitlessly trying 'conventional' weapons. This leads to a lot of annoying defeats where I kept wanting to shout at the protagonists to 'Bloody well think about it!' The whole 'sentient water' issue is etermely irritating and the 'diamond' hulls of the alien warships seem to be some other kind of diamone comaperd to those we know which will very readily vaporise at a lot lower temperatures than those found in nuclear explosions...
This is basically a very big, pulp sci fi series.

I Ching.......2007-08-28
Since receiving this book, I have read, studied, and put to use the reasonings contained within it's covers. (I have to say, some of the readings that I have gotten are totally mind boggling.) The charts, descriptions, and explanations are fascinating and uncannily accurate. I have only begun to appreciate this ages old method of divination. This book is written so anyone can understand the mechanics and the possibilities of I Ching. It is an intense writing that lends itself well to any reader's ability.
I Ching Workbook.......2007-05-12
Having had my own "I Ching Workbook" for many years, I recently bought two more for my twin daughters, now adults. The ancient wisdom in the workbook is timely for all ages and easily understood due to the simple and precise instructions that can be understood by all.
Read the book before you write a review!.......2006-08-12
I don't believe that all of these people giving such rave reviews of this book have really used it for long. I also would tend to rate it very highly, except that there is a glaring typo, like the entire description, of hexagram #15. I used to have a copy of this book, and used it, and for the most part loved it, but I find it difficult to believe that an author of any integrity would not have done a revision by now, and corrected the error. If that was done, I would happily buy and use another copy of this book
Easy and Fun to Use!.......2006-01-15
As an acupuncture student, I was interested in learning about the I CHING.
Now it is a daily ritual to consult the workbook regarding my daily affairs.
Pick this book up,you will enjoy it!
the best 4 beginners and masters.......2005-09-07
When I was 19 I was introduced to the I ching. It came in the form of this workbook and almost 10 years later I now still use it as my primary tool and reference.I have since become a follower of Lao Tzu and his teachings. Having read countless interpretations of the actual book of changes when it comes down to actually using the oracle this is the best one.I've also tried 6 other "oracle" books but none come close to this.If u never thought of doing anything close to the I ching then this book is suitable. If you haven't already used this book as a Lao Tzu reader then whereve u been?

Book Description
The I Ching, translated variously as the Book of Changes or the Classic of Change, is perhaps the oldest writing on philosophy, cosmology, divination and self -transformation in Chinese civilization. It is one of the treasures of ancient Chinese literature, used as a divinatory tool as well as an instrument to develop intuition and perception. The I Ching Workbook provides a fascinating overview of the I Ching including its history and legend, the symbolism of the 8 trigrams of natural energy, the meanings of the oracles of the 64 hexagrams, and methods for casting the I Ching. This illustrated workbook also explores the connections between the I Ching, oriental philosophy, and Chinese astrology, making it appropriate for beginners but also rich enough for devotees wishing to expand their knowledge of this fascinating subject.
Customer Reviews:
Attractive, easy to use guide.......2006-12-17
As a novice to I Ching studies, this is my favorite of the I Ching handbooks. It is designed so that the learner can become familiar with the energy and tone of each trigram and includes encouraging, simple meditative exercises to draw out the reader's own intuitive wisdom.
It begins with a basic introduction to the Oracle, teaches one how to throw coins or sticks & how to ask appropriate questions. Trigrams are the building blocks of hexagrams, and understanding their resonances is invaluable for divination beyond relying on an author's interpretation of a hexagram. This workbook provides detailed and interesting explanations for each. Changing lines are also simply explained and interpreted. There is a handy-to-use hexagram chart on the back of the last page - no hunting around for it.
The 'cookbook' pages are also satisfying, again drawing attention to the elemental energy embodied in each hexagram and giving practical advice in plain English.
This is not the most academic workbook out there, as it does not include line by line translations of the Oracle and rather focuses on elemental harmony or dissonance.
The book itself is refreshingly pleasing aesthetically and easy to use. The folded paperback cover feels good in your hands, pages are a heavy stock and information is attractively laid out. Appropriate to give as a gift.

Neat as a journal.......2000-03-25
I really liked how this book is set up. I din't think that all of the questions wu wei has for each reading applies every time you do a reading. I loved how the I ching is in the front of the book. It's like getting two books in one! Any I use it frequently and will fill it up soon and buy another.

Book Description
For centuries, I Ching has been one of the most popular divination systems throughout the world, able to provide keen insights and wise advice to all who inquire of it. Now it's easier to use than ever, with visually stunning, large-sized cards that replace the usual coins or sticks. The answer to your question is right there on the card, with simplified interpretations accessible even to newcomers. Those who want a deeper understanding of what the I Ching has to say can delve into the guide, where each symbol receives a detailed explanation. Does your card have the Ch'ien, or "Heaven," hexagram? Lucky you--success is guaranteed to come easily. But Chun, or "Initial Difficulty," means plan ahead, tread gently, and gratefully accept help. There's also guidance on finding the all-important secondary card for more counsel. No question will go unanswered. 96 pages (all in color), 64 cards included, 5 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 1 1/2.

Very Useful I-Ching Book.......2007-04-20
Hi Foretellers,
Some six seven years back, when I was at beginner's level in I-Ching, I thought it's too difficult to learn. This is when I came across Richard Craze's `I-Ching book and card pack'. He has wonderfully simplified basic interpretations of I-Ching and represented it in such a manner that anyone with good imagination and logic would be able to answer difficult questions posed. I have found it to be very useful, I strongly recommend this book and I am sure it will be useful for all I-Ching practitioners.
Best wishes,
Bhavesh N. Pattni
This is the best I Ching ever.......2004-05-02
I've been a scholar of chinese culture for over forty years and I can tell you that this I Ching is the best ever. I don't know where this guy, Richard Crze, has got half this stuff from but he must be quite a scholar himslef. he knows and understands principles of chinese thought that you really need to be chinese to do so.
This is the best I Ching I have ever encountered - simple, practical, spot on with its interpretations. Brillaint. I am in awe.
A good place to start--for beginners only.......2001-09-24
This book and card pack is a fun, but oversimplified approach to the I Ching. The I Ching is the oldest book in the world, dating back thousands of years in ancient China. Anything this simple will not do it justice. The I Ching is primarily left to scholars in China, because it is so difficult to interpret. Like other Chinese arts, it takes years if not a lifetime to master the art of divination through the I Ching. Still, it's fun to read the little book and play with the cards. Just don't take it too seriously is my advice!
