Book Description
A daring new masterwork by Javier Marías: "Spain's most subtle and gifted writer" (The Boston Globe).
Part spy novel, part romance, part Henry James, Your Face Tomorrow is a wholly remarkable display of the immense gifts of Javier Marías. With Fever and Spear, Volume One of his unfolding novel Your Face Tomorrow, he returns us to the rarified world of Oxford (the delightful setting of All Souls and Dark Back of Time), while introducing us to territory entirely newespionage.
Our hero, Jaime Deza, separated from his wife in Madrid, is a bit adrift in London until his old friend Sir Peter Wheelerretired Oxford don and semi-retired master spyrecruits him for a new career in British Intelligence. Deza possesses a rare gift for seeing behind the masks people wear. He is soon observing interviews conducted by Her Majesty's secret service: variously shady international businessmen one day, would-be coup leaders the next. Seductively, this metaphysical thriller explores past, present, and future in the ever-more-perilous 21st century. This compelling and enigmatic tour de force from one of Europe's greatest writers will continue with Volume Two, Dance and Dream, available from New Directions in 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Too slow.......2006-04-16
There's a lot of good material here, but the book really moves at a glacial pace and seems to slow down even more in the latter half. I was primed to love this but I didn't and I'm not sure I'll investigate Marias any further.
Proustian, with exquisite and frequently humorous developments.......2006-01-05
This translated work has the narrator attending a cocktail party thrown by a tweedy, elderly gentleman Oxford don. After some amusing scenes, their friendship is explored and each narrates long histories regarding the Spanish Civil War, life in England, etc. Then the narrator is asked to take on work of studying people, videos, etc, for his observations.
The vague spymaster tone, with many references to Kim Philby and various leftists in Spain, is one theme of this novel. Another is the narrator's long passages where he makes the kind of brilliantly mundane, but brilliantly subtle, observations about people and life. For example, a scene where the narrator stays at the don's house and late at night, finds and cleans up a small bloddstain at the top of the stairs. The scene, on the surface extremely mundane, goes on and on as the author spins in much wisdoom and asides that are quite captivating. Also, several (many) times there are translations between English and Spanish that the narrator comments quite amusingly on, how a certain phrase or other has a uniqueness that is very unexpected and interesting to consider.
This is also in general a very amusing book, surprisngly. The author knows how to be comic when it's called for, and several characters are purely for comic relief. Also, the narrator's tone always has a witty undertone to it, making the dialogue and comments he makes crackle with appeal.
My only problem is that the printing of this book, the pages, are to small. The text is essentially many unbroken paragraphs, and with a large typeface set onto small-than-average page size, it makes for a daunting visual. Better is to use a larger page, with small typeface, whereby the text can be approached as a whole and sunk into, rather than as a too-bold stream.
Clearly, this is literary fiction of the highest quality, doen superbly and it is amazing to read in its depth and sheer richness.

Book Description
Part spy novel, part Henry James, Fever and Spear opens the unfolding seductive metaphysical thriller Your Face Tomorrow by Javier Marías, "Spain's most erudite literary export" (The Independent [London]).
Acclaiming in The New Yorker "the clandestine greatness of Javier Marías," Wyatt Mason called Your Face Tomorrow: Volume One, Fever and Spear, "Marías's most extravagant showcase for 'literary thinking' so far. It also serves as a compelling introduction to his writing."
Fever and Spear, the first volume of Marías's ongoing novel Your Face Tomorrow, launches the reader at once on a literary adventure and into the peculiar world of British intelligence. Our Spanish hero Jaime Deza possesses very sophisticated powers of perception. He has the rare gift for seeing behind the masks people wear. Lured into observing interviews conducted by Her Majesty's Secret Service, he studies variously shady international business people one day and would-be coup leaders the next. But Deza is stepping into shady areas of his own....This strange and original intellectual thriller has been acclaimed "exquisite" (Publishers Weekly), "gorgeous" (Kirkus), and "outstanding" (Independent [London]).

Enjoyable read.......2007-04-29
This Civil War novel was surprisingly good. There were some akward passages where the editor could have done a better job. However, overall good story and fun to read. I would recommend this book if you like historical romance. I will definitely try more Heather Graham novels-this was a first for me.
This one is a classic!!.......2007-03-31
As an avid reader of anything about the Civil War, I am always amazed at how historically inaccurate many books are. This one is the exception. To say that Heather Graham has done her homework would be an understatement. She has a unique talent for blending history, romance, and sexual tension that grabs a reader from page one and doesn't let go. The hero of the story, Jesse Cameron is absolutely to die for! He's handsome, a doctor, a Union officer, a wealthy Virginia plantation owner-need I say more. He also has a strong sense of loyalty and honor that is often missing in romantic male lead characters. He is not one of those typical rakes that needs to be reformed by a good woman. He is already a great guy who doesn't play games and isn't afraid to admit what and who he wants. The story is wonderful and heartwrenching at the same time with beautifully developed main characters as well as secondary characters. I highly recommend this book as well as the two other books in the Cameron Civil War trilogy: "One Wore Grey" and "One Rode West." This is the best Civil War series I have read.
Wonderful and emotional story... one you won't forget.......2006-11-17
This is the first of Heather Graham's three Civil War Cameron stories (One Wore Blue, And One Wore Gray, And One Rode West). Here we find the story of oldest brother Jesse Cameron who is torn between his conscience and his loyalty to his family and home. He knows he cannot fight for what the South stands for, but also knows to join the Union Army he risks losing everything and everyone he loves. As he makes the difficult choice, we follow him into battle... both on the field and with the woman he has loved his whole life.
This book was one of the best I've read, and is one of the books that I have kept on my shelf and reread occasionally. It is well-written, easy to read, and engaging. The sensuality is enticing, and the emotions even more engrossing. I laughed, cried, and went through the whole range of emotions reading this book. The scene where Jesse leaves his home and must say goodbye to his loved ones is one of the most memorable I have read, and it has stayed with me long after the last page. The images evoked from the lives and experiences of these characters came to life and drew me in so that I was terribly sad when the story had ended. Luckily, there are two more books after this one so you don't have to say goodbye to the Camerons just yet.
Part one of a trilogy; All three are WONDERFUL .......2006-08-08
Because I gave this one a 5, I wanted to share my rating with you in hopes you'll read it and like it as well as I did. This one along with the sequels, I read before I was leaving my reviews on Amazon. I gave all of them a 5+. Excellent stories. Happy reading. Don't forget the others in this series.
One Wore Blue.......2005-09-17
This was an excellent book, that pulled me into the Civil War. The Cameron family has a place close to my heart. The family bond reminds me of my own.

Book Description
The dazzling Star Wars space adventure continues in The New Jedi Order as Luke Skywalker, Anakin Solo, Mara Jade Skywalker, and others battle their deadliest enemy in a tale of nonstop action, shadowy evil, and spectacular triumph . . .
No longer content with the destruction the Yuuzhan Vong have already sown, Warmaster Tsavong Lah has demanded the heads of all the Jedi. Now the Jedi Knights are in terrible danger–and none more so than the young students at the Jedi academy on Yavin 4. Already the sympathizers known as the Peace Brigade are in the Yavin system–and a Yuuzhan Vong fleet is not far behind.
At Luke Skywalker’s request, Talon Karrde mounts an expedition to rescue the young students. Anakin Solo has his own ideas. Impatient, and figuring that forgiveness is easier to come by than permission, he takes off for Yavin 4 in his X-wing.
When it comes to confidence, courage, and raw Force talent, Anakin has few peers. But when his friend Tahiri is separated from the other academy kids and captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, even Anakin may be in over his head. For the aliens have a different future in mind for Tahiri, and they will stop at nothing to achieve their horrific ends . . .

"God can be loved but he cannot be thought. He can be grasped by love but never by concepts. So less thinking and more loving."
This is William Johnston's summary of the message of The Cloud of Unknowing. Nobody knows who wrote the book, or exactly where he lived, or whether he was a member of a religious order, or even, really, whether he was part of any church at all. The text first appeared in Middle English in the 14th century, and it has inspired generations of mystical searchers (from St. John of the Cross to Teilhard de Chardin). The mysterious conditions of its composition, however, focus the reader's attention squarely on the book's message--an almost Zen rendering of Christianity, which has a great deal to teach our querulous, doctrine-obsessed churches: "And so I urge you," the author writes, "go after experience rather than knowledge. On account of pride, knowledge may often deceive you, but this gentle, loving affection will not deceive you. Knowledge tends to breed conceit, but love builds. Knowledge is full of labor, but love, full of rest." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
William Johnston--an authority on fourteenth century spirituality and specifically on the writings of this unknown author--provides a substantive and accessible introduction detailing what is known about the history of this text and its relevance throughout the ages. Also included here is the author's other principal work, The Book of Privy Counseling--a short and moving text on the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self and consciousness only of the divine.
Customer Reviews:
A TRUE WAY TO ENCOUNTER WITH GOD.......2007-06-27
This is a most compelling and etheral writing! Not for all folks, however is immensely gripping.
No reason to read this book........2006-03-05
There is no reason to read The Cloud in translation. It is written in simple prose and in one of the easiest Middle English dialects for Modern English speakers to read. This edition of the book is an unnecessary translation into Modern English in which a great deal of the original works subtleties and nuances are lost. Because the text was written with such close attention to language it is truly inexcusable for any one to read it in translation when then original is completely accessible to the Modern English speaker. I therefore recommend the edition the TEAMS Middle English Texts Series, edited by Patrick J. Gallacher and available for roughly the same price, instead of this version.
Less thinking + more loving = at-one-ment with God.......2006-01-27
My understanding and practice of contemplative prayer is that it cannot be forced or willed; it is God's gift. In this state, one transcends words, thoughts and images to enter a state of oneness with God. It silences the noises of daily life, revealing an awareness of God's love which both humbles and exalts. To that end, this 14th century book on the nature of apophatic (mystical) prayer also provides modern audiences with an understanding of the foundation of "centering prayer".
As a practitioner of lectio divinia and contemplative prayer, I found that over time, *The Cloud* enriched my relationship with God. However, it took some time; I wasn't ready when I first tried to read and absorb it. But with daily prayer, a grounding in the works of others (eg; Desert Fathers, Augustine, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, T. Merton, etc.) and spiritual growth, it took root. This is just my experience, but one which echoes the comment of reviewer RKirkham, "Study without prayer is flat; prayer without study leads to error."
If you're not sure this is the book for you, sample this excellent translation by Evelyn Underhill online @

A must read for those who are niether dualists or nondualists.......2005-10-02
Great book. Brings allot of advaita Vedanta and western religion/theology together.
Not for the Faint of Heart..........2005-07-30
I've been told that brevity is golden so I'll keep this short. "The Cloud..." is among the greatest classics of Christian mysticism available. As a Novice Benedictine it was required reading; as one Professed it was Lectio Divina; and as a man before God it is a hope.
I hope this helps. Be.
