The Forbidden Image: An Intellectual History of Iconoclasm
ASIN: 0226448371 |
Book Description
Martin Luther preached the radical notion that we are saved through faith alone. With one stroke, he overturned a thousand years of practice and teaching. Gone was the need for saintly intercessors and a special priesthood or the richly decorated and image-filled churches in which such mediation could take place. What counted now was faith arriving inwardly, in each individual, through the text of the Bible—the naked Word of God itself.
But if words—not iconic images—led the believer to salvation, why didn’t religious imagery disappear during the Reformation? The answer, according to Joseph Leo Koerner’s masterful The Reformation of the Image, lies in the paradoxical nature of Protestant religious imagery itself, which is at once both iconic and iconoclastic. According to Koerner, it is this “iconoclash” that characterizes Reformation art. The Reformation of the Image compellingly shows how visual art became indispensable to a religious movement built on words. It also reveals in Protestant images a powerful instance of modern disenchantment: the disappearance of magic both from images and from the world.
“Unfailingly arresting and inventive . . . it is a long time since a work of art history has kept me so consistently reaching for a pencil to register ardent appreciation or violent dissent.”—Eamon Duffy, London Review of Books
Customer Reviews:
The Lutheran Reformation and Visual Art.......2006-03-23
This book deals primarily with the Reformation Lutheran view of visual arts (painting, statuary, etc.) While contrasting the Lutherans with Calvinists (who destroyed the artwork of their churches), this hefty volume exposes the Lutheran emphasis on teaching through artwork. The crucifix was allowed to continue in Lutheran churches, but 'the surrounding witness of saints' was dropped in favor of a Jesus-only piety.
This book also contains an extensive review of the illustrated Words used by Lutheran churches as a classroom-church ideal.
An interesting examination of theological communication, made very relevant by the modern use of screens, images and the like within modern Christian churches!

Book Description
Catholics and Protestants have, since the earliest days of the Reformation, held markedly different views about the Virgin Mary. In Reforming Mary Beth Kreitzer examines the development of Lutheran views on this subject as expressed in 16th-century Lutheran published sermons, starting with the earliest of Luther's own Reformation sermons. She shows that from the beginning Lutherans rejected much of the theology and piety that surrounded Mary in Catholicism, especially her status as heavenly queen and intercessor with Christ. They affirmed those orthodox teachings about Mary that related to Christ (the Virgin's role as Theotokos, the virgin birth) and by extension Mary's purity, or perpetual virginity. As time went on Lutheran preachers showed less interest in Mary as a topic and by the later part of the century showed an increasingly harsh and critical view of her. These later sermons reveal a new willingness, in opposition to received tradition, to impute sin to Mary. Kreitzer attributes this changed attitude to the increasing distance of Lutherans from their Catholic roots, the logical results of theological changes in the Reformation, and a perception of an increased threat of re-catholicization. Finally, she shows, Mary was pressed into service by preachers who endeavored to instruct the laity in both what to believe and how to live, making a causal connection between being a good Christian and being a good citizen of society. In this context, Mary was used as a role model and was often promoted as an exemplar for females in ways that served to constrain and domesticate women, placing them more firmly under male authority. But despite the attempts by preachers to domesticate and mold her, Kreitzer argues, the Lutheran Mary remains a complex and paradoxical figure.

A dissertation.......2005-07-13
Most interesting topic, and there is much to be learned from all the information contained in the book. It is well researched and documented, because it is a PhD disseration. If you are a scholar interested in this topic, this book is highly recommended. For others, I'd still recommend it, although not as enthusiastically.

War against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship from Erasmus to Calvin
ASIN: 0195121724 |
Book Description
John Dillenberger has written the first comprehensive account of the relation between the visual arts and theological currents in Europe during the first half of the sixteenth century. With an astute knowledge of the theology of the period and a keen interest in the lives and work of prominent artists, Dillenberger makes incisive connections that illuminate the cultural movements of the time. Images and Relics considers both popular and professional art within distinct religious contexts. It examines the works of Matthias Grunewald, Albrecht Durer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Michelangelo, Hans Holbein the Younger, Hans Baldung Grien, and Albrecht Altdorfer, and demonstrates how these artists expressed and transformed the reigning theological ideas of their day. The book also addresses the range of iconoclastic movements from the 1520s to the 1570s, particularly in northern Europe. Finally, Dillenberger reflects on the ambiguity of the history of this period and its continuing impact on modern-day life.

Book Description
The brothers Giulio, Antonio, and Vincenzo Campi (leading artists in the North Italian town of Cremona in the second half of the sixteenth century) supplied religious paintings to a wide range of clients both in their hometown and else-where in the dukedom of Milan. Their work stands out for its unusual choice of subject matter, a high degree of naturalism, and a directly accessible presentation.
With the religious paintings of the Campi brothers as its point of departure, this book explores the way pictorial representations were used in the context of the Catholic reformation. It was precisely in northern Italy, where influences from northern Europe and central Italy converged, that religious reforms translated themselves into visual art in unexpected ways. Ample attention to the original public of the paintings brings to light the role these works played in the religious perception of their earliest users.

Book Description
This is a study of the enormous religious reversal that England experienced as the avoidance of idolatry became a priority of the Reformation. Opposition to church images was a feature of English life from Wyclif to Oliver Cromwell. It was an aspect of reform that affected all believers, from theologians who wrote so massively on the topic of idolatry, to parishioners who were taught to reject idols and whose churches were denuded of colour and ornament. The phenomenon of iconoclasm cannot be understood except through the developments in theology brought about by sixteenth-century reformers. Both divine and secular laws were changed, as Protestants remodelled the text of the decalogue to give new prominence to the prohibition of images, and the new scriptural priority was reflected in the enactments of church and state. Pressure for image reform was building up long before Henry VIII turned iconoclast, and by the time of the civil war, a century of action and teaching against images had profoundly affected English belief, as well as English churches. England's Iconoclasts offers new insight into the nature and effect of these changes, and is a substantial contribution to our understanding of the entire process of Reformation.

The absolute worst painting book I've ever bought.......2006-06-13
Whoever encouraged David Carr to write a book on painting the nude should be taken out and executed - right along with anyone involved with publishing and distributing this piece of garbage. I've never seen such a collection of ugly, poorly composed, junk being used as examples in a book. Grade schoolers could be handed water colors and do a better job of rendering the nude - no matter what the style.
If I'd bought it new it would already be in the box going back to Amazon. Instead I bought it used so it's going straight in the garbage where hopefully no soul shall ever lay eyes upon it again.

Book Description
Rin has spent countless days chasing the murderer of her parents, and now she has Anotsu Kagehisa where she wants him, but the deathly ill Anotsu is too sick for the honor-bound Rin to strike down. But such is not the case for the students of the Shingyoto-ryu, who are out to avenge the death of their sword master, and they have Rin captured and Anotsu cornered. The spirit of revenge is thick in the air - and about to get thicker as Manji, Rin's immortal bodyguard, finally reunites with his charge as this pot of retribution prepares to boil over. And so Manji's faced with a strange irony - to save Rin, he must cut down the men who are out to kill Anotsu, Manji's sworn enemy!
Customer Reviews:
Sotry arc climax.......2005-08-22
Wild action as the crippled Anotsu faces a dozen sword school killers. Manji and Rin choose that moment to reunite and blood flows. Samura's complex story line is wonderful and his battles beautiful. For those familiar with the series, this is an excellent chapter.
Finally, the story's back on track!.......2005-08-19
Last Blood is Volume 14 in Mr. Samura's revenge-quest manga, Blade of the Immortal. While there are some genuinely funny and sweet moments (the laughs and awws provided by Magatsu and Rin, respectively), the overall tone of this volume is dark and tense but NOT depressing. Anotsu has been systematically cut down, but now he will regather his forces (what's left of the Itto-ryu) and strike back at the Bakufu! Likewise, Rin reunites with Manji, and however briefly their time, she makes a long-awaited confession....
Needless to say, I lapped up every single panel: this series is very very well plotted. Yet I do have a minor complaint. Some of the pages seem rushed, and the lines, very dark and heavy. However, the one or two full page pencil sketches are still astonishingly beautiful.
This series F-ing ROCKS!.......2005-08-03
All that is holy, this is THE manga to get. There is nothing better.

Mirth of a Nation is a collection of short humor pieces compiled by the Thurber House, which is a very dry way of describing a very funny book. Mirth is, at long last, a truly perfect humor-browser's read, for everything--everything--is presented with a wry wink. The book opens with Dave Eggers's guidelines for submitting work to the Thurber House ("Before undertaking the typing, straightening, and mailing of your submission, please do us the small favor of washing your hands. Please.") and closes with Al Franken's refreshingly mean-spirited index ("Luntz, Frank, likelihood of his immediately turning to index and looking up his name, 48"). In between is a hilarious collection of both new and previously published pieces. Targets range from contemporary issues (Chris Harris, tackling the UFO phenomenon in "What We Talk About When We Talk About Little Green Men": "If their object is stealth, why must they employ colored, blinking lights on the outside of their spacecraft? Is it alien Christmastime?") to the biblical, as in Ian Frazier's marvelous "Laws Concerning Food and Drink; Principles; Lamentations of the Father" ("Heed me; for if you sit like that, your hair will go into the syrup. And now behold, even as I have said, it has come to pass.") The book is so funny, in fact, that it would be a pity to give away any more punch lines. Grab a copy and see for yourself. --Ali Davis

- John Updike on cross-dressing with J. Edgar Hoover

Customer Reviews:
A mixed bag with enough tasty treats to satisfy.......2005-04-18
With about 140 pieces from dozens of contributors, this humor anthology is a mixed bag. For me, some of the essays and parodies fell flat. Yet enough were truly hysterical to sustain me and keep me turning those pages. Among my favorites: Jon Stewart's "Pen Pals" and "The Last Supper, or The Dead Waiter"; Garry Trudeau's "I Am a Tip-Top Starlet" and "To Our Valued Customers"; Al Franken's "Index";Zev Borow's "A Graceland for Adolf"; Mark O'Donnell's "TV Guide, Soon"; Bill Scheft's "The All-Purpose Concession Speech"; and P. J. O'Rourke's "Memoir Essay."
You have GOT to be kidding.......2004-02-10
I suppose if your IQ were in the mid 90's, you'd find these books amusing. I had the misfortune of taking both this one and "More Mirth..." as reading material on a cross-country flight. After 200 pages, no giggling, but lots of "oh come on" rolling of the eyes. Sophmoric crap. I ended up reading the US Airways magazine and doing the crossword instead.
5 Stars, except there are 50 more star humorists in the book.......2003-10-27
Humor books are usually miscellaneous hodge-podges of "something for everybody." This one is not. It's a sustained compilation of great writing. Writing by very talented people who are variously smart-alec, smart-assed. and just plain smart. That's the one thing that's similiar about all the pieces: they're just very well done. After that, there's a huge range, from Sedaris's hilariously scatching review of kiddie theatrical productions to Garry Trudeau's re-re-retranslating of a Madonna interview back and forth from Russian. There are as many expected players--Ian Frazier, Fran Lebowitz, Dave Barry, P.J. O'Rourke with terrific pieces--as there are surprises and newer names. Favorites? Howard Mohr (who worked with Garrison Keillor on Prairie Home Companion for years), John Updike doing a parody about J. Edgar Hoover cross-dressing. David Ives, the brilliant playwright, giving a culinary history through philosophers. Even the index, by Al Franken, shows that Mirth of a Nation is serious about being funny, from cover to cover. I have the second volume, More Mirth of a Nation, and, believe it or not, it's even better. Thirds, anyone? I gather from their website it will be out in 2004. Can't wait.
WORST EVER.......2003-01-20
This CD was the worst of anything I have ever heard or read. Out of six CDs, there were two Dave Barry's and two other stories that were bearable. The rest were lists: I mean lists that were numbered, like reading a menu that someone must have thought were funny. And several were things that came off much better when they were passed around in email.
hilarious.......2002-05-07
This book is non-stop funny. I believe that Mirth of a Nation is going to become a major pillar in the realm of humor writing. The pieces are well chosen--there is truly something here for everyone. The big names come through with hilarious material, as well as many I've never heard of (but hope to hear more from!) I can't wait for volume 2!

Book Description
More seriously funny writing from American's most trusted humor anthology
Witty, wise, and just plain wonderful, the inaugural volume of this biennial, Mirth of a Nation, ensured a place for the best contemporary humor writing in the country. And with this second treasury, Michael J. Rosen has once again assembled a triumphant salute to one of America's greatest assets: its sense of humor. More than five dozen acclaimed authors showcase their hilariously inventive works, including Paul Rudnick, Henry Alford, Susan McCarthy, Media Person Lewis Grossberger, Ian Frazier, Richard Bausch, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Nell Scovell, Andy Borowitz, and Ben Greenman -- just to mention a handful so that the other contributors can justify their feelings that the world slights them.
But there's more! More Mirth of a Nation includes scads of Unnatural Histories from Randy Cohen, Will Durst's "Top Top-100 Lists" (including the top 100 colors, foods, and body parts), and three unabridged (albeit rather short) chapbooks:
David Bader's "How to Meditate Faster" (Enlightenment for those who keep asking, "Are we done yet?")
Matt Neuman's "49 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth" (for instance, "Make your own honey" and "Share your shower.")
Francis Heaney's "Holy Tango of Poetry" (which answers the question, "What if poets wrote poems whose titles were anagrams of their names, i.e., 'Toilets,' by T. S. Eliot?")
And there's still more: "The Periodic Table of Rejected Elements," meaningless fables, Van Gogh's Etch A Sketch drawings, a Zagat's survey of existence, an international baby-naming encyclopedia, Aristotle's long-lost treatise "On Baseball," and an unhealthy selection of letters from Dr. Science's mailbag. And that's just for starters! Just remember, as one reviewer wrote of the first volume, "Don't drink milk while reading."

Mirth?.......2005-02-23
This piece of garbage is not worth your time.Go elsewhere for true amusement.
Rediscover Kurt Vonnegut.
This entire book is just terrible and was the only thing I had on my cross country flight.
Where's The Mirth?.......2004-04-14
Rarely have I been as disappointed with a book as I was with this one. I love a good laugh, and picked this book up while on a business trip, expecting to have a good chuckle while on the airplane, but alas it was not like that at all.
There were one or two gems in here, but mostly this is a collection of "almost funny" stories and essays. Many of the writers here are trying way too hard to be hip and intellectual.
You will find more laughs per page in this month's issue of "The Economist" magazine. Do yourself a favor and skip this book. Try anything by Woody Allen or P.G. Wodehouse instead.
This is funny?.......2003-07-28
Ok, granted, there ARE a FEW things in here that deserve a chuckle, but for the most part, this stuff is pure drivel. Definitely not a "sit-down-and-read-it-all-in-one-go" book, but even when broken up into small chunks, you'll spend forever and a day looking for something that's truly funny.
A definite 4+........2003-06-04
This book is a compilation of funny writings by prolific American writers. Betwixt a strange look at Pokémon and a letter from the Census takers, there are great things, like the periodic table of rejected elements, and 100 favorite body parts. This book is hilarious, and I recommend it to all people, except for people who make census, and the creator of Pokémon.
Loved it!.......2003-02-07
This is a terrific compendium, with a little something for everyone, no matter how high or low their brow. There are some head scratchers, to be sure, but for the most part, the contents are sheer joy. Smart but accessible--The New Yorker meets Dave Barry.
