Trigun Is Back.......2005-10-12
I was to my disappointment that Trigun didn't continue after Volume 2. I kept on searching every retailer and only saw Trigun Maximum. I actually read the review for it and found that Trigun crosses over to Trigun Maximum.
Trigun Maximum takes place after the Angel Arm incident on Jeneora Rock. A few years have past, and we witness the return of Wolfwood, The Gung-Ho Guns, Knives, Legato, and most improtantly Vash The Stampede.
This book was so great I bought Volumes 2 and 3 right away. The action is easier to understand in the Maximum series. Keep up the good work Nightow!
Hurry up, Dark Horse.......2004-09-22
Short review-
Dark Horse is doing an excellent job on their translations for Trigun. All honorifics are left in.
About the actual content- This volume's mostly filler, following the fifth moon incident. Wolfwood's huge cross is revealed to be a machine gun, and Vash is still a god with his revolver. The art is pretty sketchy, but I still love Nightow-san's syle.
Also, there's been some talk about Vash's 'new' look. Most Americans have seen the anime, in which he keeps his original look the entire time, before reading the original manga, in which Vash's look abruptly changes in Maximum. Vash's new coat is a little crazy looking, but/so it fits Vash's personality a bit more. What's more, does it really matter what Vash looks like? He's still Vash.
9.5/10
Vash is Back!.......2004-06-30
Although the wait was intense, it was well worth it. The book had many new and unique things about it, different from the ever popular anime. Many times it is hard to fully understand the action that is being illustrated, but in the end, you get the general idea of what has happend. The illustrations sometimes leave me wondering "This is awful", and again, some illustrations are wonderful. In the end, it really does not matter as long as the stroy gets told. And in the end, I found Trigun Maximum #1 to be a well spent $10.
Taking the wild west wackiness TO THE MAX...-IMUM.......2004-06-18
The "love-and-peace'n", irritating, moronic gunslinger is back, and nothing's going stand in his way for doing what he does best...expect for donuts and babes. (YAY!)
[1-VOL REVIEW]
Trigun Maximum isn't so much a new series, as it is a continuation of an already popular manga in the US. Yep, America loves it, and Japan wants to forget it(hey, facts are facts). From this point on, the things you knew from the anime series is completely different with this one; it parallels itself from that counterpart. I mean, come on, look at the black sides from Vash's hair in the book cover; IT'S DIFFERENT! With its new physique, expect some additions and differences onto this new adventure: new companions, new enemies, and from this manga ongoing, Nicholas D. Wolfwood doesn't die...hopefully.
The parallel thing doesn't start, yet. The first volume pretty much covers episodes 18-20 of the anime series, which is Vash leading a new life with a new identity as he lives with a young girl named Lina and her granny, but after being forced to bark like a dog in the nude by those sasafrassin' baddies and later got into a bullet blitz with Nick Wolf on his side, he realized he can't avoid what he is, so Vash the Stampede was reborn and left the caring ones behind to avoid harm. Enter the two stoogettes, Meryl and Millie, plus the conflict on the kidnapping and family vengence, and it's the whole celebro hoo-ha. There's only some key differences between this and the anime, i.e. Vash getting his new outfit during the feud chapter instead of the flying ship episode from the anime and this manga actually took place two years after the Fifth Moon instead of the five years in the anime, but other than those, I can only assume the true parallel act can happen in the second volume.
This is actually my first Trigun manga ever bought. I would like to buy the first two 300-page volumes, but I've seen the whole anime as it is, so why read the chapters originated for the ones I've already seen? That, and plus I don't want to pay five extra dollars more than the average TOKYOPOP manga for each volume(yea, I'm a cheapskate). Thankfully, Dark Horse made the TM series more accesible by making it cheaper, while keeping the same format and quality as the last two. In other words, the sound effects remains untranslated, and strangely, the honorifics are there as well. Not to be biased with the honorifics, if its there, it means that Digital Manga is doing great with the translations, but I don't recall ever seeing or reading a western medium where someone called the superior "sempai." It's just weird, that's all.
Some guy isn't kidding when he warn me about the art style of the manga, and I should've heed his words, cause that's the manga's biggest flaw. Trigun Maximum is VERY SKETCHY. I've read manga with sketchy designs before, but this is the creme de la crop. Characters are angled and not that detailed and polished, even some of their clothes are just scribbled in. And the panels within are so messy, even if they're big, I can't determined what's happening; like in one panel for example, and I was thinking, "What the-? Is someone playing paintball or are those gunshot wounds? WH-WHAT'S GOING ON?!!" That's the reaction I have with this design, and it made me lose track from fluently guiding through the whole story. Although the design does provide a positive message to future comic book artists: "Kids, you can draw as crappy as this, and you can still make a lot of money on your work."
Trigun Maximum is a great way to continue what's already a funny and stylized action series, and make it a little different by its looks. The messy art style alone prevents me from giving it a perfect grade, but it doesn't destroy what's good about this series, either. If you bought the other Trigun books, you probably have one in your hands right now, but if you haven't read the first two volumes, and have seen the entire anime series, Trigun Maximum is a perfect start to continue along this seemingly fun westerner. I Reckon'men'd this here book.
Book Description
In this brilliant follow–up to her Avon debut, Melody Thomas captivates us again with a rich and emotionally satisfying 'marriage of convenience' story that will delight fans of Judith McNaught.
Michael Fallon is the third son of a Duke, and when the love of his life was betrothed to his older brother, Michael left England to serve in the military. Now he's a captain stationed in Cairo, and he inadvertently rescues Brianna Donally from the deserts. Michael is the most exciting man Brea has ever known, and the attraction between them is undeniable. A 'modern' woman, she sees nothing wrong in initiating an affair, but when Michael unexpectedly inherits the family dukedom, the 'marriage of convenience' Michael proposes is anything but, and Brianna suddenly finds herself falling in love with a man she vowed never to trust with her heart.

Passion, Mystery ... and More!.......2007-01-03
This book, second in a series of 4, stands alone as a great read and yet is further enhanced by knowing the rest of the family history. Wow! Major Michael Fallon, alpha male, is enigmatic yet very passionate. Brianna is strong, with lessons to learn and is not afraid to learn them. The setting is rich and memorable and the adventure filled with twists that keep the pages turning fast. The characters resonate and stay with you long after the story ends. History and culture cues add to the fictional fun and make it seem that much more likely to have been real. Pure, adventurous fun!!
This romance was a very mixed bag for me.......2006-06-01
Melody Thomas can write and she creates a vivid and interesting backdrop for her story in the first half of the novel and also a vivid and interesting heroine. I'm a sucker for Victorian colonial settings and for unusual heroines.
Brianna was an engaging heroine, young, idealistic, courageous, self-confident but vulnerable and unlike other heroines she has had a life and purpose before she meets the hero. However the brilliant photographer, socialist and suffragist who wanted to lead an independent, self-determined life once gives it all up to lead a co-dependent life with the hero and submits herself to the rules of others, Michael, his mother and the obligations of his ducal home which was a big part of my problem with this book.
The moment Brianna meets Major Michael Fallon she is lost to the world. I have never seen a heroine who loved or sacrificed more for the hero. The fact that she doesn't admit to herself that it was soul-searing love from the first moment for her doesn't make it any less real. She might be lying to herself but all her actions speak a clear language. She's caught in a whirlwind of passionate emotions heightened to desperate degrees by a reticent and emotionally detached hero who shows her affection one moment and a cold shoulder the next. She pursues him relentlessly, not deterred by Fallon's outward show of casualness and negligence. Actually she goes so far in her pursuance that I cringed at some of her antics. Brianna is clearly beyond pride or a healthy sense of self-preservation when it comes to the hero. I found Thomas has captured the essence of female obsession very well.
Major Fallon on the other hand remains an enigmatic person. I never could make him out. He seemed emotionally detached even as he gazed hotly at Brianna. His behavior didn't make sense to me because the thoughts the author attributed him with seldom matched his actions. He allegedly feels like a green lad in front of the heroine and like wax in her hands but in fact his actions are that of an extremely controlled person who domineers the whole relationship because he's not ruled by his emotions as Brianna is. He claims later to be obsessed with her but you never actually see any sign that would indicate an obsession on his part especially compared with the very real seeming obsession his wife feels for him. He thinks of his wife only in sexual terms to the point where it began to repulse me. I had the nagging feeling he mistook sexual desire with love and never really was interested in what was behind the alluring form of his wife and erotic passion she showed to him..
One the surface Michael Fallon is the possessive, protective alpha hero with the standard problematic past but there was an undercurrent of something deeper here at work which was never fleshed out. Many threads were left hanging such as the issue with Michael's youthful painting and Brianna's problems with her mother-in-law and her initial reluctance to become a mother. She's actually unhappy to become a mother and this thread is left hanging also. And what became of the cottage that Brianna wanted to reconstruct for her photo-lab and which reconstruction her mother-in-law stopped eventually? What did Michael think of her work? Was he ever interested the least bit in that part of her?
Sadly enough, while Brianna's love for Michael seemed touchingly authentic, his alleged love for her never came to life for me at all. At one part of the story while she is already married to Michael Brianna demands from her husband that he courts her because she feels that he has never done so. The author closes that thread with the mere mentioning that Michael now courts Brianna. How he actually does this is not described at all which was most disappointing. I think Thomas should have pictured this instead of writing another superfluous sex scene where Michael exerts once more his tremendous sexual power over Brianna which successfully overruled her common sense every time (most annoying for this reader).
The ending left me quite sad for the heroine because I felt she was not happy with the life she never would have freely chosen for herself and which will be full of restrictions and obligations to subdue her once exuberant spirit. She had sacrificed everything and gained not much in return except a perpetually randy hero whose love for the heroine seemed shallow and of course a baby every year.
Passion and intrigue you wont forget!.......2006-04-24
Must have been the moonlight was the first book I read of the Donally series and I loved it! Brianna and Michels relationship is so passionately intense it keeps your interested through out the book. I've got to know Melody Thomas writing through out the Donally series and love her books. I highly recommend "Must have been the moonlight" to readers as well as "In My Heart" " A match made in scandel" and the newly released book "Angel in my bed"
a poorly written book without the slightest spark of life.......2006-03-27
Melody Thomas' writing is so painfully awkward that I had a hard time getting through It Must Have Been The Moonlight. Worst of all is her dialogue, which is an endless string of non sequiturs. Here's an example of a paragraph that I found really annoying:
"You're a wonderful man, Michael." He was wonderful. Really, really wonderful, with beautiful eyes, a roguish tilt to his mouth, and she liked him a lot, maybe even fantasized about falling in love with him once too often. "But there's nothing else between us."
She said he is wonderful; that is a quality apparently pertaining to him, Michael. Michael's character, good or bad, is a different subject than what may or may not be between them. She never says what actually *is* between them - she goes straight to "nothing else" - nothing else than what? What are the opposing terms here? She just skips between two melodramatic statements. If some dialogue is jerky and melodramatic, fine - but the whole book is like this.
Aside from which, the attitude she expresses about her feelings in this paragraph lead to another thing I didn't like. Brianna and Michael are poorly conceived, inconsistently portrayed characters.
Sometimes Brianna is very "wham bam thank you ma'am" with Michael, and then the next minute she'll burst into tears the second she sees or hears something to indicate that he is not 100% devoted. I understand that people don't always feel logically, but you'd think she'd at least get herself straight about what she wants, and what she's willing to say to Michael - but she doesn't, she just does whatever will suit the drama of the moment.
Michael is the same way. Is he a hardened and heartless agent of the crown? Is he a nice man who likes to play with babies and talk to old ladies during his spare time? Is he distanced from his aristocratic past and upbringing, or is he chomping at the bit to jump back into high society? Who knows! It depends on which page you are on.
Thomas also has a real "tell don't show" attitude about her writing. Somebody will say something like "Brianna has an insatiable love of life and all people are drawn to her" but I never sensed that in her at all. She didn't act it out. Or else they'll say "Michael is a real womanizer" - but at no point in the book do we find out that he's had sex with any other woman, ever.
Their relationship progresses in the oddest fits and starts. I think it's the "tell don't show" thing again - Thomas will *say* that there is some sort of magnetic attraction between Brianna and Michael, and then Brianna and Michael will have a conversation full of melodramatic non-sequiturs and irrelevant declarations about their romantic history or childhood, but I never *saw* the spark between them.
And there is this pretense throughout the novel that Brianna and Michael have some sort of purely physical relationship, and they need to work past that to a meeting of the souls or whatever...but this is ridiculous, too, from the very beginning neither of them thinks of their attraction purely physically and their interactions aren't particularly sexual.
Frankly, I thought this book was poorly written, trite and cliche-ridden.
Lush setting and great characters.......2005-10-14
I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. This was just the kind of romance novel I love. Wonderful characters. Characters that seem real because they are not perfect-something most novels like this lack. There are interesting plot twists and we get to know several secondary characters well. The secondary characters are not boring. The chemistry between Brianna and Michael was very sensual and immediate. The heroine is the perfect foil for the hero's cynicism and intellect. It was written with an amazing level of intensity and feeling that my heart was pumping furiously with both the palatable passion and the keen sense of danger infused in the story. Brianna and Michael were both wounded, intriguing, complex, wonderful characters. The action/suspense was fast-paced and thrilling. The setting was beautiful and exotic. The sex was HOT and perfect for the story. Melody Thomas stories are humorous, romantic and interesting - and she is excellent and creating characters that are real, interesting people - and that you remember vividly from book to book throughout the series. You want to know them better! I love the Donally family. This is the second book I have read from Melody Thomas and I love them both. I'm looking forward to reading more about the Donally family. All I can say in conclusion is if you like a good, emotional, heart-tugging historical, with characters that leap off the pages, buy Must Have Been The Moonlight.
Product Description
To want him was madness ...Far from home was the last place Brianna Donally ever imagined she'd find the one man she'd desire above all others. When Major Michael Fallon, the dangerously seductive British officer, rescues the bold beauty from certain doom, Brianna discovers a reckless passion she is unable to resist. But a fiercely independent female photographer could never make a proper bride for the grandson of a duke. And a bitter betrayal has locked love away from Michael's heart forever.... to deny her was impossible. And yet ... Michael cannot disregard these sensuous stirrings. Could it be the moonlight that has bewitched him ... or the intoxicating scent and touch of this remarkable, infuriatingly "modern" woman? Scandal would be the least consequence of their consummated passion -- there would be perils as well. For Michael will never settle for anything less than a true, intense, and all-consuming love.

"This rousing sequel to the classic Ringworld continues the adventures of Louis Wu and Speaker-to-Animals on that fantastic planet."--School Library Journal An ALA Best Book for Young Adults
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This sequel to Ringworld, basically back by popular demand, takes a more in depth look at what it is like to actually live there, and at the beings that actually do.
More of the construction and engineering issues are also looked at, unsurprisingly.
Louis and Speaker To Animals return.
scifi classic.......2007-07-28
The original and informal trilogy that began with Protector ends here. There's a fair bit more character development here than in Ringworld. I remember not liking this book as much as Ringworld, and now the tables are turned, which does I guess reflect that change in reading tastes. The whole trilogy is worth reading for scifi fans, as some pretty interesting ideas are present (evolution, life cycles, stellar engineering, superconductivity...just to name a few), and it is easy reading as well.
Great sequel from a great author.......2007-01-12
Larry Niven did a good job of creating a sequel to one of his most famous works. 'Ringworld Engineers' has several of the characters from the original 'Ringworld' returning and some new ones. Combine this with Niven's interesting technologies and you've got a book thats a great read and well worth its price.
A disappointment.......2005-10-30
The original was recommended to me by a friend, and I enjoyed it enough to pick up the sequel, but after reading it I can see why she didn't bother to recommend this one too.
From the title you would guess that this is about the engineers of Ringworld, but in actuality the entire thing is about alien sex. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but only a slight one. There is a plot, but it's strung together and ultimately overshadowed by Louis running from place to place in order to have sex with aliens.
Disappointing and somewhat sad to see an author run his most well-known creation into the ground like this, presumably just to make a few extra bucks. This is one of those cases where it would have been better to just leave the original to stand alone.
Ringworld Series.......2005-10-24
Exellent follow up to Ringworld. Worn out my original, just had to get another copy.

Great daily reader and mediatation guide!.......2007-08-04
I have been in 12 Step recovery for most of my life and do a lot of reading on a wide variety of spiritual books by people like Eckhart Tolle and the Dalai Lama and love the essence of Christianity and Buddhism which is forgiveness and kindness. It's difficult to find a daily reader and meditation guide that synthesizes the best from the roots of spiritual beliefs but this little guide is a delight and surprise on a daily basis. It also talks about ego in a very understandable and approachable way (myself and many others have found that ego hates to be looked at and is the artful dodger!) I'm not totally into the Angel belief system when this comes up in the readings but put up with it because the rest is so great.
Great daily reader and meditation guide!

Pocket Full of Miracles.......2007-01-11
This book of daily inspirations helps us to start our day in the right frame of mind and the exercises it suggests helps me to keep a calm and peaceful outlook on the day.
Best inspirational book .......2006-08-04
This is the second copy I buy of this title. Inspiring, emotional, great!!!
A treasure of a book.......2005-09-26
If I were told that I could have only one book of my many hundreds, I think "Pocketful of Miracles" would be my selection. I first purchased this book several years ago for myself, and I have since bought a copy for at least fifteen friends and acquaintances.
The book is a treasure trove--valuable as a daily meditation guide and also as an introduction to numerous spiritual traditions. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the commonality of spiritual paths.
Beautifully written with a focus of igniting and expanding in the reader compassion, insight, tolerance, and knowledge, "Pocketful of Miracles" never ceases to add light and well-being to each day and to warm my heart with its richness and wisdom.
Thank you, Ms. Joan Borysenko, for this lovely gift you have given us!
