These three novels are great fun. The publisher also deserves credit for an attractive product at a bargain price. I read all three novels within a few weeks, and then did the same with volume two. Anyone who likes these books will also enjoy reading Raymond Chandler. It's a close contest, but I liked Chandler even a little better. Chandler's main character (Phillip Marlowe) spends less time boasting than Spillane's (Mike Hammer), and is also more real-life in his need to make a living. But you are cheating yourself if you don't read them both.
Entertaining Hard-Boiled Noir Reading.......2007-09-01
The Mike Hammer tales are not for the faint of heart by any means. Mickey Spillane's hard-drinking, nihilistic, hard-bitted, two-fisted private gumshoe is forever driven by a dark sense of personal honor and a thirst for vengeance. He doesn't suffer fools, or anyone else, and wears his emotions clearly on his sleeve. One can see why he became so popular in the repressed, McCarthyistic days of the 1950s.
The Mike Hammer Collection Vol. 1 contains the first three of Spillane's Mike Hammer novels - I, the Jury, My Gun is Quick, and Vengeance is Mine! - which, as a rule, follow the standard formula of detective novels - there is a murder under mysterious circumstances, and when the P.I. digs deeper, he discovers a startling or seamy secret no one expects, which throws him in even more danger. In all honesty, after reading two of the Make Hammer novels, the plots become fairly predictable, and the identity of the grand, string-pulling villain behind it all can be guessed from early-on.
However, one doesn't read Spillane for the plot - he is clearly a style man, and it is the style that will keep you reading through this volume and volume 2 (which I also recommend). Spillane's world is a dark and dreary version of New York City where a sort of Darwinian, survival-of-the-fittest worldview prevails. The people on the bottom-rung of society are barely scraping by, and crime and decay are on every street corner. The perfect lion of this particular asphault jungle is Mike Hammer, a veteran of WWII's Pacific Theater who eats, drinks, fights and loves with equal intensity.
All of the stories are written in the first person, giving us a window into Hammer's inner monologues, which are sometimes juvenile and rudimentary, and sometimes rather profound. Hammer is an intolerant, hair-trigger sort of fellow; the women of the books are femme fatales of the highest order; the villains are inscrutable and unscrupulous. Most shocking is the violence in Spillane's work, which is quick and brutal and vivid - even by the standards of today's jaded audiences. For those who have enjoyed Hammett and Chandler and are looking for a different read, you can't do much better than Mike Hammer.

I cannot actually review the contents of this item because it was bought as a gift for someone else. I can say they were delighted with it and told me that they have been enjoying it very much. This is a person who has wide reading interests.

I thoroughly enjoyed some of the stories in this book; it took me one day to read it. I especially like the fact that each story portrayed black men positively...men who were trying to right their wrongs and accept responsibility. The stories were well written and the plots were easy to follow, all while still being erotic and semi-erotic in some cases.
In Brenda Jackson's "Strictly Business," we have Gina who has a gig that could make or break a writer's career who involves spending a week interviewing a handsome, ambitious and ruthless Texas millionaire--who's also her ex-husband. I love Brenda's work but this one really didn't captivate me the way it should, it sort of drag in some spots but speed up in a few places that shouldn't.
"Catch Me If You Can" by Cindi Louis. We have Lonzell and Leesa who plan to marry just before he goes overseas serving in the military. Leesa becomes pregnant but she is unable to contact her beloved. Several years later he returns home to find single mother Leesa raising their son and learns how his mother kept them apart. I have to say that this story was the best out of the bunch; from start to finish it had me glued and I just wish it had been a full blown story. It really captured my heart.
"Promises and Vows" by Felicia Mason. After three years of marriage, Jerome and Elise head towards divorce as both pushes their respective careers before their relationship. They sleep in separate rooms until his voodoo-practicing Aunt arrives for a visit. Jerome vows to use any form of magic to save his relationship with his beloved. This story was okay even though the plot was unrealistic but the passion was well felt. I've never read anything from this author and probably give her a try when the time comes.
"Kidnapped" by Kayla Perrin. In Fort Lauderdale Jamal crashes the wedding, abducts Nia before vows are exchanged, he is determined to prove to her that there's no better man for her than him. This story was interesting but ended up being another story that was unrealistic to me. I respect Kayla's work but I felt it could have been better. There were a lot of touchy moments between these two as well as the craze.
The characters again were interesting, story lines were captivating but most importantly the book was soundly written. I couldn't put it down at all it was full of love, lust, lies, pain, happiness and some big time freaks in love. In the other hand if you're looking for raw, raunchy sex scenes, sorry, this book has WAY more substance than that. "The Best Man" is really a fantastic book especially for those lazy weekends.

All four stories in this book were excellently written, and as I read them, I could relate to the characters in each story. That is how I know I've read a wonderful book..when I can relate to the characters.
Sizzling novellas..........2006-03-01
I purchased this book primarily because I'm a big Brenda Jackson fan. However, I must say that after reading Kayla's, Cindi's and Felicia's novels...I've just added three more authors to my reading list. Each novel was sexy, hot and left me aching for more to read. The men in each story, were strong, sensitive, sexy and determined to love their women. Jamal in particular was edgy as all get out and oh so sexy! The women were femininine, independent and strong. This was a wonderful read and I'm glad I read ALL the novels. It was time WELL spent! Much respect to all the sistahs!
Good stories - Brenda Jackson's was the best!.......2005-07-02
I got this book mainly because one of the novellas was written by Brenda Jackson. She didn't let me down. "Strictly Business" was anything but. The story of Regina and Mitch couldn't have been told any better. Regina is Trevor Grant's sister for those of you who've read "Fire and Desire".
I also liked "Promises and Vows" by Felicia Mason. "Kidnapped" had some hot love scenes but a weak plot. "Catch Me If You Can!" was a pretty fogettable story in my opinion.
All in all I would suggest that Brenda Jackson fans pick up this book.

One of the best books about a favorite character of the Bible...Joseph. I could relate with each test he went through. A must read if you feel you're always living in the dream, but never realizing your destiny. I also recommend the video series. We are using it with our community group at church. GET THIS BOOK!!!

From Dream to Destiny changed my life. Reading this book helped me see and get through one the life lesson's God was dealing with in me at my workplace. I bought several books and gave them out to my clients and recently purchased more to use in a book study at church to teach others the 10 Lessons We Must Go Through to Reach Our Destiny.

This book is a blessing! It is filled with many answers concerning destiny. The author, Robert Morris expounds on the life of Joseph (Gen. 37-50), his journey from the pit to the palace.
Joseph is the perfect example of a person being tried in many areas while traveling to his destiny. He faced many difficult challenges which makes FROM DREAM TO DESTINY a book so encouraging for anyone facing difficulties.
Robert Morris elaborates on the 10 tests we must pass in order to walk in our destiny. They are: pride, pit, palace, purity, prison, prophetic, power, prosperity, pardon and purpose. All of which we must go through if we are to reach our destiny. The author also reminds us that many tests occur after our dream but before our destiny.
Don't give up between your dream and fulfilling your destiny!
