Book Description

From bestselling author Michelle McKinney Hammond comes a captivating first novel filled with her hallmark wit and insight.

Tracy awakens one morning to a radio report—the ratio of eligible men to available women is slim to none. Now, armed with actual statistics and a past of heartbreak, Tracey explores, with her four good friends, how intelligent women with impressive careers, coveted urban dwellings, and closets full of fashions can still worry so much about the shortage of men.

But as life unfolds, they discover that it is not the last ten percent of eligible men in the country but true faith that will ultimately give their hearts one hundred percent love.

2 out of 5 stars Slow.......2007-05-17

This book was a really slow read. I still dont have a clear understanding of what the point was. I felt like the characters were a little boring and that the story left you hanging.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I read.......2007-03-09

The Last Ten Percent is one of the best book I have read. It touches on the up and downs of relationships in addition to some points why women should not allow men to take advantage of them. I could relate to some of the characters in the book as to the mistakes I made in the past. The book is so realistic as to what women go through today...Their thoughts, their ways, their behavior and their friendship. I recommend the book to ALL single adult women. I think you will enjoy the read.

2 out of 5 stars Too slow.......2007-02-27

I am just starting to read this book and I must admit, it's a slow read. I guess I am spoiled by Carl Weber's strong characters and twists and turns. I am sort of fed up with the same old relationship books: had a man, lost him, gotta get anotha' one...or got a man, he's dogging me out, blah, blah, blah. It's time for something new. I love to read but would like more of a variety in the "our" books.

3 out of 5 stars Cliffhanger.......2007-01-19

Although I read many of Ms. Hammond's books. I classified this book as a cliffhanger b/c it left me wanting more information about the characters lives after the the story ended. All in all this book was different from her self help relfection books but it did provide many of her chrisitian living and dating principles. I suggest this novel to women who are looking to read a book not filled with graphic sexual details, and non chrisitian language.

5 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - The search for a lasting relationship. .......2006-12-24

Michelle McKinney Hammond crosses over into the world of fiction with her debut fiction title THE LAST TEN PERCENT, a well-written tale about five women and their struggles with relationships and men. On the surface each of the ladies appear to be any man's dream. Adrian is the perfect wife. She puts her husband and her home above everything but God, conforming to whatever her husband wants. She has happily given up her interests for the interests of her husband. All the women look at Adrian and think she has the perfect life. What they don't realize is that no one's relationship is perfect.

Tracy is an advertising executive whose view of men is clouded by her need to make everyone beautiful. After having her heart broken yet again she realizes that she is the common denominator in all her failed relationships. Determined to find the lasting love she deserves, Tracy decides that some things must change and she starts with herself. Tracy's cousin Felicia is beautiful and has no problem getting a man's interest but once in a relationship her insecurities surface and cause problems. She is on a search for the love that was missing from her childhood, but must learn to place these feelings aside so that she will be prepared for a new relationship that will change her life.

While Tracy and Felicia are looking for love, Muriel is doing all she can to stay away from it. She has built up walls to keep out any man who is interested and would rather spend her time working. Carla, one of Muriel's friends, has other ideas and persuades her to help a friend find and decorate his new home. He turns out to be different from any man Muriel has dealt with before and she may have just met her match. Meanwhile, Carla appears to be happily married to the man of her dreams, but deep inside she is worried that God is punishing her for sins committed in the past. With a devoted husband by her side, Carla must decide whether she is going to move forward or remain stuck in the past.

In THE LAST TEN PERCENT Hammond has done a wonderful job creating characters that the reader will become attached to and care about. The situations and experiences are all real life situations that many women have experienced themselves. She also steps outside the stereotypical mold of making all men the bad guy by providing positive male characters. This is one novel that will entertain you while delivering a message of encouragement along the way.

The beautiful Rachel Grant put her heart and memories in cold storage following the disappearance of her fiancé. Her parents' sudden death 10 years later forces her to return home to settle their estate, but she finds that more awaits her than selling off furniture and signing papers. Dealing with her past is made more complicated by the appearance of the mysterious Adam Delafield. He claims to owe the estate several million dollars, but there is no mention of him or of such a large transaction in her father's papers. That would be odd enough, but Delafield is also the spitting image of Rachel's missing fiancé, long presumed dead. Rachel is naturally troubled by his looks, and further bothered by a series of accidents that are too close for comfort. Then suddenly, even her father's business associates and old friends seem to have something to hide.

Fantastic coincidences are central in Kay Hooper's previous--and most popular--novels After Caroline and Amanda. She has put her skills to good use in Haunting Rachel, despite a sometimes awkward style. Dreams, doppelgängers, and dark dealings do make for delightful reading and Hooper seems to have found her niche with this brand of romantic thriller.

      Book Description

      Danger wears many faces....

Ten years ago Rachel Grant's fiancé, Thomas, disappeared. His body was never found. Now there's a stranger in town, a man who could be Thomas's twin--or his ghost.

His name is Adam Delafield. He's been watching Rachel for days. He has the locket she gave Thomas before he vanished. And he says he owed her father three million dollars.

But there's no record of the loan—or a shred of proof that Adam is who he claims to be. And he's always nearby as accidents begin to threaten Rachel's life.

Is he an innocent man who only wants to repay a debt? Or a figure from the past with a score to settle? Rachel must expose lies and unravel stories, find out who wants her dead and why...before the next attempt to kill her succeeds.

      4 out of 5 stars Well...........2006-07-05

An Aside first: the dichotomy on the reviews of this book is just fascinating. There are some truly polar opinions. Great plot / bad plot; good on details / bad on details; too much sex and romance / not enough sex and romance...etc. It's like people were reading 2 different books.

Anyway, I didn't think I was going to like this book. I actually almost decided not to read it. I wasn't sure if it was romantic suspense or just a suspense book....I prefer romance. So I kept putting off reading it and almost opted not to, but then figured I'd give it a try. Glad I did. It was a fabulous book.

The storyline was excellent. Hooper did a great job casting suspicions about. She'd write scenes out of context that made characters questionable. You were never quite sure who was good or bad. You had a gut feeling and kind of knew that certain people were good, but she made you wonder. Hooper did a great job with the details too, making the story believable and interesting. I was thoroughly into everything that was going on.

While the book is more plot than romance, there were enough romantic elements to keep me into the story. It could have had some more general romance, but I wasn't bothered by that issue. Rachel and Adam's relationship was still pretty well done. There was a good elemental chemistry between them and you really want to root for them. The progression between them was great to read. The only negative I can say is that Hooper skimped on the sex scenes. She basically just implied them. Took some of the spice out of the book.

Another aspect that I really enjoyed was the sub-story of Nikolas and Mercy. They had a great romance and I was just as interested in them as I was everything else in the story. I liked them just as much as I did Adam and Rachel. And Hooper gave them plenty of story space. They didn't just have spare scenes, they were an integral part of the story. I liked that.

Overall, great book. Definitely worth reading.

      3 out of 5 stars Just so-so.......2005-06-25

I am a huge fan of Kay Hooper and always look forward to the release of a new book by her. This book was a huge disappointment for me, it is not one of her best.

Rachel lost her fiance, Thomas, ten years ago in a plane crash. She has been mourning him this whole time, wondering if she will ever find love and be truly happy again. Suddenly, she notices a man hanging around that could pass for Thomas's twin, but anytime she tries to get close, he just disappears. Is it Thomas, or his ghost?

I was hooked at this point and looking forward to another great story by Hooper. Unfortunately, the book went down hill from there. The plot was confusing and hard to follow, and Rachel was such a shallow character that I really didn't care what happened to her by the end of the book. Ms Hooper missed the mark on this one, and I am a fan.

2 out of 5 stars An okay book.......2005-04-27

The main problem with this book is that who cares about Rachel. She seems like one more whiny, spoiled upper middle class white girl. So her husband died, so her father died - boo hoo. Everyone in the world must now revolve around her. Who cares. I actually ended up enjoying the secondary romance between the banker and the secretary more. She should write that book.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite book ever!.......2004-05-17

This one tops my list of favorite books. There's murder and romance mixed together so well as well as being fast paced. Plenty of suspicious characters to make you wonder who exactly did it. A great read and I highly recommend it.

      4 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful.......2004-04-17

This was the first Kay Hooper Romance Novel I read. I was "smitten" by the unusual story and loved the characters. The mystery of Adam, Thomas's look-a-like, and Rachel weave a tingling tale. I couldn't put it down. After reading this I recommend "Finding Laura", "After Caroline" and "Amanda". I liked these stories better than her Shadows & Evil series as they have more romance. I find her style in these much improved from her older novels written in the 80's, which I have since also read. I really wish the hero's and heroines of her stories weren't so perfect and beautiful and this story is almost accomplishes this issue. Some things really do get better with time. They are more normal in appearance and so you can concentrate more on their story and the mystery surrounding it without feel like your dealing with "super heroes". A good rainy day novel and still one of my favorites.

Georgina Witherspoon is a beautiful young woman bored with her society-dictated life and her supposed fiancee. She wants adventure and when a letter comes from her aunt in the New Mexico Territory, Georgina can't wait to go. It seems her aunt is distraught over her mother who is seeing a ghost. She begs Georgina's mother and father for help. Georgina talks him into letting her go. Upon her arrival, she is met by the handsome town sheriff, Ash Barrett. While they are getting into the wagon, a shootout occurs on the streets. Georgina wants to see, but is rather upset when Ash pushes her down under the seat and tells her to stay there. Angry over missing the excitement, she gives Ash a dressing down for his actions.

Ash Barrett can't believe this blue blood being angry over him saving her life. In fact, Ash thinks she reminds him of his ex-wife. She changed after their marriage and didn't want to live out in the wilderness with him. Even though he swears he never wants to see her again he finds himself over at her home with her aunt and grandmother all the time. He can't explain his attraction to her but neither can he deny it either.

Georgina is angered over Ash's treatment of her, but she can't deny how her heart races everytime she sets eyes on him. Though they both try to fight the attraction they feel toward each other, it burns hotter and brighter each time they are together.

SPIRIT OF LOVE is a warm, wonderful and tantalizing tale of love between two people who are totally opposites, but find they are perfect together. In addition to the two lead characters, the secondary characters add a bit of spice with a crotchety old grandmother and a roguish ghost. Ms. Wilson has written yet another great romance with all the elements to create a best-selling romance.

      5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......1999-06-30

Yearning for adventure, Georgina Witherspoon leaps at the opportunity to help care for her Grandmother Murphy who claims the ghost of her former lover haunts her. The long trip from New York to Picacho Wells passes in a flurry and in high excitement she steps from the train, expecting Aunt Vernice to greet her. The rustic town is everything Georgina read about in the dime novel: crude, dusty, and populated with men who could easily pass for genuine desperadoes. When Sheriff Ash Barrett announces he will escort her to the home of her Grandmother and Aunt, Georgina feels her heart flutter. Handsome, tall, and dangerous looking, Ash Barrett epitomizes the rugged cowboy, and within the space of a few moments confirms all her suspicions when he thwarts a bank robbery and apprehends the robbers.

A widower, Ash Barrett has not intentions of wedding another "Lady." His heart and mind may concur but his body screams otherwise. Georgina Witherspoon's rounded curves fuel his fantasies, tossing kerosene onto the fires of passion until he can't think straight. He must have her or die from self-immolation.

Excellence comes in many guises but is easy to recognize, and Rachel Wilson gifts readers with a package bound in humor, wrapped in romance, and tied with love to present an offering of sublime excellence. Larger then life characters, that slid easily into the heart, people the pages and turn a plot crafted and tuned to the pitch of splendor. Laughter adds spice to passions that threaten to erupt in every paragraph, and the ghost lends a mischief note of decent to exacerbate any given situation. If I had to limit my review to only one word, that word would be delightful.

Plot lines are unpredicatable; readers will uncover clues with the Eel Grass Girls and work just as hard to figure out how the pieces fit together as the stories romp along, always engaging and often a bit frightening. 5 out of 5 stars Really Amazing.......2003-06-09

I have read The Haunting of Captain Snow twice, (actually the first time I read the manuscript). The book is really long, 330 pages and 84 chapters, but it's totally worth it to spend the time reading it! The book is about The Eel Grass Girls, (who else), in their pursue to find out what is haunting the old haunted house of Captian Snow. They come across a wicked coven of witches, a strange coyote, cold winds in the house, and many more stange and mysteryious things. The book is so long and has so many scary, fun and mysterious things in it that I can't mention everything, but I can say that this was one of the best books I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone.

Review of a Catherine Asaro novel by Jack Lundy

Catherine Asaro's protagonist introduces Herself as Soz, a fighter pilot, a "Jagernaut" of the Skolian Empire, the commander of an elite squadron quartet of JG-17 "Jag" spacecraft. As we accompany Her star-faring through the far-off future, little by little, She allows us to sense She is more. Their Jags require pilots whose speed-of-sound nerves must merge with speed-of-light systems. This is made possible only because the pilots are cyborgs. Moreover, She is a "psiborg", for She can access a computing network that makes our present Internet seem a provincial cobweb by comparison.

Her squadron of fellow "psiborgs" scramble their Jags to fight their arch enemies, a rival, sinister empire whose space fleet is pacifying a world by creating a deluge on a disobedient world of Old Testament proportions. Alas, Her squadron's best efforts nearly get them killed, and they manage to save but a few ark-fulls of the innocent. During the aftermath, where She is reassigned for both Her failure and Her own safety, we learn She is Sauscony Valdoria, directly related to the Skolian Emperor, his sister. She is indeed a Primary in the most literal sense of the word.

Counter-pointing Her high ranking and Her deadly fighter pilot skills is Her humanity, Her soul. She is not exactly a telepath, but an empath, one who feels other souls' emotions rather than minds. Alas for Her, empaths are rare and are where they are. When She finds one, She feels a potent mutual magnetism, which results in beautiful, sensuous trysts where violence evaporates. But the stresses of Her profession, based on destruction, foster such a desperate, lonely emotional starvation that all the other empaths, poets, musicians, even the psichiatric ones, only merge like pleasant snacks.

        Save one.

The one? A Jabriol Qox, the direct heir to the Empire Her civilization desperately fights. His empathic psi powers do much more than match Hers. They complement Her like She complements him, right to their marrow of Being. They LOVE each other. But, that Triumphant Empire he shall inherit has violently, mercilessly killed almost all Her family. And once, when She had been taken prisoner, one of their elite, one of this man's closest family, had personally tortured Her within a micron of insanity. She has vowed "Never again." Therefore, She, Primary, now must prepare for total war against Her soul mate, though She knows deep in Her guts that the Universe without LOVE is an absolute, desolate void.

Thus the Skolian Empire Saga starts.

        2 out of 5 stars WOW, I didn't like this book!.......2006-06-21

In reading the other reviews of this book, I discovered the writer is female physist. That makes a lot of sense, the main character is a middle-aged very powerful woman. It reads something like the fantasy of a powerful middle aged woman. I mean, the story itself is OK. If written differently, I could have enjoyed it. It had points where it read like a trashy romance novel, this woman and her younger boy-toys in sex scenes that were a little too vivid. It's science tech was very elaborate and well thought out, and sometimes described in such detail that it detracted from the story. Maybe re-written as "made for Sci-Fi Channel movie' the story would be enjoyable, it certainly has some interesting ideas, but as presented in this book, my suggestion would be to pass it up.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative space opera - read it!.......2005-11-11

I was really impressed by this! Asaro's book has it all: great writing, a fascinating future universe, cool technology/science, an awesome space battle, and a climax that is as trippy as it is exciting! But what really sets the book apart is the main character, Soz, who is as complex and fascinating as they come. Her
transformation is realistic and quite moving. Asaro is a sensational writer, I already picked up two subsequent books in the series, can't wait to read them. Also check out the Risen Empire by Scott Westerfeld. Peace.

        4 out of 5 stars Good Begining!.......2005-10-08

My least favorite of any series is usually the first book. The first seems to always be more concerned with introducing and building characters and plots than truly telling a story. I would say that is true with this series, but not as true.

My favorite character in this series is definetely Soz. For that reason alone I liked this introduction to the series more than I usually like introductions to series. Primary Inversion introduces readers to my favorite aspect of the Skolian universe-Jagernauts(Jags). Jags are cybernetically enhanced empathicly capable human fighter pilots. They can stay connected psychicly with each other and their ships which make them capable to coordinate the attacks that keep Skolia free from Eubian rule. Yet, what must it be like to be empathic and a soldier? To die with every enemy you kill? I liked that this novel focused somewhat on what long term effects of constant battle are. What it is like to be a soldier on active duty for 40 years-with no real end in sight of either the war nor your active role in it. Sauscony (Soz) is in line to inherit her older half-bothers' (Kurj) military leadership and place in the psibernet. She is competing with her older full-brother(Althor) in a battle to see not only who is best suited to replace Kurj as Imperator and leader of the military, but also who is left alive to do so. Her youngest brother (Kelric) and the third Imperator-in-waiting is declared missing and presumed dead at the begining of the story. The toll all of this death, killing and in Soz's case even capture and torture have placed on the soul of an already sensitive empath. What living under these conditions have warped and will warp her into being. Not able to lay down the load cause millions of lives are at stake and there is no one else to shoulder the burden. Having the courage to ulitmately walk away from power, from war, from hate-to build your own way. All of those conflicts are in a story that is in many ways a futuristic re-telling of Romeo and Juliet. Only in this story, Juliet is the soldier and Romeo is along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars Characters were great, techno stuff less so.......2005-08-02

I found myself tuning out on all the techno stuff in a star trek babble kinda way, though it probably made more sense from a physics point of view than I am aware of. Likewise the telepathy explanations, with afferent and efferet receptors- nice but ultimately not that interesting.

What made this book stand out though and why I give it five stars was the interesting scifi political world that it created, with the skolians and the traders at an uneasy cease fire, the clever allieds and the neutral/occupied worlds. When the humans of the earth in the 24th century finally master inversion and are able to explore space they find that some unknown aliens had already abucted humans around 6k bc, and these earlier humans have not just conquered most of the galaxy and developed serious technology, their genetic experiments have produced telepathy and other abberations.

Also Soz herself was fascinating, all that she had been through, her loneliness, the loss of her beloved brother. The scenes were Soz, being imperial heir and a top cyborg combat pilot, mingled with the "normal" people and saw the mindbender were very well done and it was easy to empathize with her.

A suprise ending left me wanting for more.

The male is in crisis. Traditional roles once gave men stability and continuity from generation to generation. Today, the world is sending out conflicting signals about what it means to be a man. Many men are questioning who they are and what roles they fulfill in life--as men, fathers, and husbands. This uncertainty is disrupting their personal and professional lives, leaving them frustrated and causing them to live far below their potential. It is creating cracks in the foundation of society. Best-selling author Myles Munroe examines cultural attitudes toward men and discusses the purpose God has given them. Discover the destiny and potential of the man as he was meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars You leave with complete Understanding,.......2006-07-05

The power to define is the power to determine destiny. If you want understanding of your masculinity and your purpose as a man then Dr. Myles Monroe's book is for you. I found the book to be an indeph look into the masculine soul. It is a book that women will never forget and a book that men will never feel alone again. If you want God's purpose for your life as a man, then this book is a powerful tool for men who want to find their way off the False Roads To Manhood which is a book out that helps men too.

5 out of 5 stars 'Help' I Need To Understand Men.......2006-06-04

I have always had a fascination with understanding people particularly men, maybe this stems from the fact that I was very close to my father (now deceased) and brother when I was younger. What affected them had a direct knock on effect on me and the rest of the family. As I grew older and entered my first relationship I started to recognise a pattern of self destruction in men and I needed to know why.

There many years ago began my quest for knowledge and understanding; I believe that God is using Dr Myles Munroe in an `awesome' way. My first introduction to him was when he visited the ministry in England, that I was a part of and spoke on the Primary Purpose of Man, this seminar explained the disconnection of man/woman to God and the consequences of that disconnection, giving clear illustrations, for example complicated technology that is used without first reading the instruction can appear to malfunction when in fact nothing is wrong with the machinery it is just not being used correctly and to its full capacity, he likens this to man/woman not knowing God and so continuously trying to find him/herself. Dr Munroe explains that no matter how successful they become there is an emptiness something is missing, something that no matter how hard they try they cannot find as they are looking in the wrong area.

This book explores the male in depth from a different angle; it looks at what it means to be a man with and without God, and delves into their innate drive to find fulfilment and purpose and examines what happens when purpose is not found. In this book is the answer to many questions that the world is asking such as what is happening in society today? Why are brothers killing brothers? Why are men taking something so precious from women (their bodies) irrespective of their age but give nothing in return it also explains why women let them. Why is recreational and illegal drug use on the increase? Why are people fearful to walk the streets at night indeed why are the older people in society not treated with respect? Why has the family structure broken down? Why is society as we know it, in chaos?

I know that there are a lot of why's at the end of this review but I make no apologies for that as the answers are in this book. On a final note God ordained men to be leaders whether they believe in Him or not, and whatever they lead on they will do to the best of their ability and it doesn't matter if what they are doing is good or bad, they will still do it to the best of their ability for example their bad will be really bad and their good will be really good. The thing with being a leader is that leaders set examples for others to follow, (what you do your children will do) When you thought he wasn't looking, he learned most of life's lessons that he needed to know from you.

This is a must read book for men and women, it is clear and concise, Dr Monroe writes with such simplicity that even a child could read it and get understanding, in fact I recommend that you get your children to read it so that they are clued up and don't repeat previous generations mistakes. I will definitely be reading Understanding the Purpose and Power of Woman.

5 out of 5 stars Very powerful insight into God's Purpose for the Man.......2006-03-10

Our small group used this book along with the study guide and worked our way through it. The group consists of couples. This is important to know because I believe the women in the group were able to get just as much out of this as the men. The Power and Purpose of Woman is next on our agenda.

                5 out of 5 stars eye opener.......2005-07-08

This book was a real eye opener. It really taught me about men- how God created them differently but complimentary to women. This book will definitely help me in my relationships with men.

                5 out of 5 stars men.......2004-12-29
