Alex McKnight, the burned-out former cop turned PI of Steve Hamilton's Edgar Award-winning first novel, A Cold Day in Paradise, was a promising catcher who never quite made it to the majors. But his old teammate Randy Wilkins did, for one game with the Detroit Tigers that effectively ended the pitcher's career. What Randy can't forget about that game was the beautiful young woman he met the night before he blew his future in professional sports. Over two decades later, he's come to McKnight to track down the mysterious Maria, whose memory still haunts him. The trail is pretty cold after all these years, but Alex manages to get a line on Maria's relatives, who aren't exactly thrilled to make his acquaintance. In fact, they're downright hostile when Alex finds them in a small Michigan town, and he just barely escapes with his life. But he perseveres, and ultimately makes his way to an even smaller resort town, where the natives are almost as unfriendly. The police chief is so hostile to Alex's efforts that he quickly realizes someone else is on her tail, and that there's a good reason she's been hiding out for so long. Not only that, when someone shoots Randy and almost kills him, Alex is in for another nasty surprise. His old friend isn't who he seems to be, and Alex himself may be the victim of exactly the kind of scam Randy's been running since he left the majors.
Hamilton has a well-developed sense of place, and he's good at exploring the complexities of his protagonist. But it's Randy the reader wants more fully realized, even after the mystery is solved and Alex makes a beeline back to Paradise. This is a taut, well-written thriller that fulfills Hamilton's promise as a writer to watch. --Jane Adams
Book Description
In an unprecedented literary feat, Steve Hamilton's debut novel, A Cold Day in Paradise, captured both the prestigious Edgar and Shamus awards. Now the best-selling author presents the third installment in his critically acclaimed mystery series: a complex, atmospheric tale that will plunge readers back into icy, unpredictable Alex McKnight territory, where the private investigator finds himself doing a favor for an old friend-but this favor could cost him his life....In the remote, wintry reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it's hard for a man to remember what springtime is like, let alone Spring Training. But when a former teammate tracks him down, erstwhile minor league player Alex McKnight is instantly transported back to the good old Toledo dugout, circa 1971. Unfortunately, Randy Wilkins didn't trek 3,000 miles to the bleak shores of Lake Superior to sit by the fire with a couple of imported beers, dissecting the past, inning by glorious inning. He's here to pitch a proposal: that Alex help him find the woman with whom he had a brief, passionate affair three decades ago. Who is Alex to deny a fellow the chance to ward off classic midlife chill by rekindling an old flame? What he doesn't consider is that there might be a good reason the mysterious, missing Maria is more elusive than a starting position in the majors-and that his trusted old pal might not have told him the whole score....AUTHORBIO: STEVE HAMILTON, born and raised in Michigan, works for IBM in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and children.

A great read.......2005-10-15
Hamilton does a fairly good representation of Upper Michigan and the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan/Ontario and area. Clearly he has spent enough time there to cite specific locations and directions, and he captures the atmosphere pretty good, if somewhat cliche. The location lends a different backdrop to basic plotlines, and he works that backdrop into the stories in this series. A refreshing approach to a well used genre.
This is a good weekend read and very enjoyable -perfect for an afternoon by the pool or a rainy weekend at the cottage. It is a little on the 'easy reading' side of things, and not as involved plotwise as something by Ludlum or Clancy, but it is very easy to fall into the story very quickly, or pick it up again after a break. A good style for a tired mind after a busy week. I have recommended this series to others and will continue to do so as I look forward to the next book.
-Start at the beginning, as parts of the stories build on each other.

Low-key thriller that holds your interest........2005-08-10
Alex McKnight gets pulled into his latest case when he is visited by old baseball friend Randy Wilkins, who wants Alex to help him find Maria, a woman he spent a week with some thirty years ago. Of course, things wind up being a lot more complicated than they initially appear.
What I liked most about this book were the characterisations. The folks in this book seemed like real people. The dialogue and situations occasionally resulted in some laugh-out-loud moments, which is rare for me. It helped gloss over the fact that this isn't the most twist-laden crime drama you'll read. In fact, if you've seen just one film noir, you'll anticipate just about everything that occurs here. The character revelations didn't exactly have me gasping out loud, and the ending is underwhelming, to say the least.
Nevertheless, I really did enjoy this book. Steve Hamilton is a talented writer and I am looking forward to tracking down more books involving these characters.
This is by far the worst book in the McKnight series.......2005-02-12
I've read all of Hamilton's McKnight novels and this one is the worst. It took me well over 300 pages to get into this novel and by that point I'd spent so much time reading the book I just wanted to be finished and done with. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of his other novels but this one just seemed to have no purpose, couldn't grab my attention, and was just a painful read. If I wasn't such a fan of his earlier books I would have put this book down after the first 40 pages. I still own this book but wouldn't put anyone through the torture of reading it. If you have yet to read the McKnight series read his first novel, A Cold Day in Paradise, it's a classic mystery.
A Frenetic Search for Lost Love!.......2005-01-15
There's something about Alex McKnight that resonates with me. Maybe it's his bad attitude. Maybe it's his sarcasm. Or maybe it's that in the end, he's a sucker like me. In this outing, author Steve Hamilton takes on a ride through Alex's past. Through the streets of Detroit, Alex and his old friend, Randy Wilkins, are off on a crazy search for a girl Randy knew when he played for the Tigers. When Randy gets shot, Alex tenaciously searches for answers. The plot falls short because the set-up isn't that believable and the ending is too abrupt. Furthermore, Randy's personality is quite annoying. I'm glad he got shot. An enjoyable read, but not Hamilton's best.
Book had promise but fell short.......2004-09-10
Let me first say that i really enjoyed Steve Hamilton's first 2 Alex McKnight books in "Cold Day in Paradise" and "Winter of the Wolf Moon". However this book just didn't do it for me. It was predictable from the begining that Randy wasnt the great guy he was being made out to be in the first 100 pages. The book dragged on in the first 100-120pages (its only a 300 page hardcover book). When Hamilton finally got to the story i was totally underwhelmed.
I wont give away spoilers like other reviewers but one reviewer made a great point. "Why did randy want to meet Maria?" That question is never truly answered.
A quick recommendation: Dont make "Hunting Wind" your first Steve Hamilton book choice. Go get Cold Day in Paradise. If you read Hunting Wind you might be scared away from reading some of his other fine books.

Haunting Memories.......2006-12-06
Alex is Happy driving his truck to eat at the glascow Inn obtaining his Canadian Beer he has brought over from the "Soo" eating his specials of the day and then driving back to his cabin he inherited from his father along with six others that gives him a small income along with his disability check from the Detroit P.D. for a bullet lodged near his heart that gives him more trouble in his brain recalling the incident. Therefore the arrival of a thirty year ago friend with a story of lost love and a need to go to Detroit to find it has Alex wondering what exactly to do. The rest of a fine story prevails and I suggest reading it to enjoy the whole thing. I have two more of his books to read and will wait in suspense to receive whatever new he will write. Get it it will not be a mistake.

Very Good, Recommended Reading.......2007-04-10
This is the first book I have read from this author. I really enjoyed it. The story was creative, and interesting. There was some humor in the book and I liked the characters.
Defintely worth reading.
Fast paced and entertaining.......2006-08-27
I think one of the worse horrors, as a child, is being ripped from your parents' arms and made to live with a physically abusive tyrant who beats you daily. What makes the pain most acute is the gradual loss of hope that your parents will somehow, someway, rescue you from the clutches of your captor.
This was the hellish childhood Sterling Harlow, seventh duke of Devonbrooke, had to endure. His father, broke and deeply in debt from gambling, literally sold his own son to his uncle, the sixth duke of Devonbrooke. His uncle didn't have an heir so Sterling was it.
Sterling grows up to be a hard, bitter, and unforgiving man. His mother writes to him faithfully for six years but he never responds. When he finds out of her death, he writes to his mother's ward that he plans to take over the manor and will, immediately upon his arrival, kick all of them out the house.
Laura Fairleigh, his mothers' ward, is at first enraged by Sterling's letter but then she becomes desperate. There is a provision in Sterling's mother's will that the manor will go to Laura if she marries before the age of twenty-one and her birthday is only three weeks away.
Instead of waiting a month, Sterling decides to visit the manor right away. When he's within minutes of arriving at the manor, Sterling has an accident that robs him of his memory. Laura finds him and takes him home. But while she's caring for Sterling, a plan begins to unfold in her mind; a plan to fool the stranger in her house into believing that he is her betrothed and that their wedding is within three weeks.
The highlight of this tale is Laura's younger siblings: Lottie and George. Lottie is a firebrand in love with gothic tales. She experiments with ways in which to kill Sterling before he marries Laura and has countless kittens that follow her around. George is the perfect balance for Lottie. He's always there to aid her or help get her out of scrapes.
This was a fun read. It was fast-paced and interesting enough to hold your attention. The attraction between Laura and Sterling seemed a bit contrived and shallow. Teresa Medeiros is a first-rate writer and I think her prose is what saves this rather weak storyline from mediocrity.
This Book Deserves 10 stars!.......2006-07-11
'A Kiss to Remember' by Teresa Medeiros is one of the best romance books I've ever read. It tells the story of Laura, a country girl who needs to marry before her 21st birthday if she wants to keep her younger siblings and the house they are staying in before the devil himself Sterling Harlow of Devonbrooke can take it away from them. But everything gets turned upside down when she comes across an unconcious (not to mention gorgeous) man in the woods. Since he has no memory of who he is, Laura decides to play a game and announces him to everyone as her betrothed. She does not realize that the man she falls in love with is the rake-hell himself Sterling Harlow. I wish I could tell more of what happens but that would ruin the story.
The characters in this book are wonderfully written. The book is very funny, ecspecially when it comes to Lauras younger sister. For people out there who also like to read about that three letter word that we all enjoy, most romance book have maybe 1-2 good love scenes, this book has not 2, not 3, but 4! juicy love scenes. What I also love about this book is that is has an epilogue. Since this book was one of the best, if not the best romance book I've read (and trust me, I've read alot) I loved it so much that I was still thinking about it weeks later, it's that good. So anyone who enjoys a superb historical romance book, I highly recommend 'A Kiss to Remember.' Trust me, it's worth it!
Sweet but predictable.......2006-07-07
The story is as everyone said predictable but it is supposed to be a fairy tale. I am not sure why everyone is so hard on the heroine, she did do her best to save her family (the usual story line) which is the common method of uniting the hero with the heroine. So she was a bit deceptive - so what? She lived in a time where woman had little means of achieving anything, they were chattel, I say its a nice change to see a female holding all the cards even if it was a bit dishonest - it makes for a fun read. And honestly, I don't think she was thinking all that much, she saw what she wanted and she took it - hmm sounds familiar? Its refreshing but nontheless a little boring because the heroine has to do all the work - handing herself to him on a silver platter? It just seems to simple - wish he worked at winning her for a change. Now Whisper of Roses is really good because Terea did reverse the roles later on. Kind of sick of all these lovesick heroines who fall all over the hero - it seems like they were release from convents.
Hero is the only likeable character in this book.......2006-05-13
I've really enjoyed some of Medeiros' books in the past. Some of them even earned a five-star rating from me (which is extremely rare) and ended up on my keeper shelf. So I went into reading A KISS TO REMEMBER expecting to love it.
I didn't. In fact, I didn't even manage to get halfway through it. The hero was the only likeable character. He was surrounded by jerks. The whole book is based on the heroine's lies, but I was willing to look past that, since she did have a good (if not really believable) reason for her scheme. But I found her to be completely childish. She finds a man who has lost his memory, and is determined to mold him into her perfect mate. It doesn't matter what he's really like, because she's determined to make him believe that he's this perfect model of gentlemanly behavior.
While Medeiros wrote this concept with her typical witty and enjoyable dialogue, it got old really fast. I got sick of the way the heroine kept manipulating the hero. She tells him he doesn't drink, he doesn't try to kiss her, he doesn't swear....etc, etc, when of course he does all those things. She even goes so far as to force him to become the rector of their parish. Yes, forces him. She doesn't bother even discussing it with him beforehand, just lets the old clergyman announce that the hero will be the new rector to the entire parish, which is when the hero finds out about it.
I got sick of her actions and her attitude. Hello? When you fall in love with someone, they are going to have their flaws. Nobody's perfect. You can never force someone into your vision of what your perfect mate should be. It doesn't work, and the heroine is childish and spoiled for trying, in my humble opinion.
The heroine's younger sister, Lottie, is determined to kill the hero. Seriously, I'm not joking. How is reading about a young girl shooting arrows at the hero or mixing up poisoned icing funny? The very idea was sickening, and was the last straw. I stopped reading. I guess the author was trying to make the book lighthearted, but I was just disgusted. How many of us would have even considered killing someone when we were under the age of twelve? Or even today as an adult? Sick, sick, sick.
I usually don't like rakes, but the hero was the only decent one of the lot. Medeiros used to be an auto-buy, but after trying A KISS TO REMEMBER, and being completely let down by ONCE AN ANGEL, I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try her again.

Good Book
a slow spot in the series........2006-12-08
yes,its true.the 3rd book from a 19 book series crawling along like a wounded deer.leia spends her time doing a whole lot of nothing.lord nyax still isnt around.han battles it out with the vong over esfandia.the jedis search endlessly to find a fabled living planet.jaina gets pretty banged up.a really cool part is when she attempts to perform psycho-surgery on tahiri, whose 2 personalities are battling for dominance.the vong began killing thier own for failing.assassians are after the jedis.i almost thought vergere was back.thank cerronious she was srill dead.she was ultra-obnoxious.the living planet has uncharted force powers.nom anor becomes a cult leader in a religious fashion and the higher ups find out.about the cult, they dont know its nom yet.anyhow hes getting the shamed vongs to think the jedi are good.tahiri swears a life debt to jaina solo.thats about all i can say.this book would be half as long if they took out all the politics and drama.i was disappointed by it as the book is one of the final 3 and it just drags.the parts with tahiri are cool.she really starts to blossom in this one.no light saber duels, only 1 battle and a ,lot of hoopla!
Enjoyable, but gets a little bogged down in places.......2006-01-17
This book is a continuation of the three book Force Heretic series and the seventeenth book of the NJO series. This was a 300-page story made into a 390-page book. You could take at least ninety pages out and loose little in the story. However, I enjoyed the continuation of the three main threads in this part of the story. One is the discovery by Luke's party of Zanoma Sekot and the surprises the find there, including dissention by the locals, known as Ferroans. The second is Leia's mission to reconnect the galaxy, and finds the Yuuzhan Vong and Imperials at the same place, a vital communications nexus with the Unknown Regions. Third is Nom Anor's latest reincarnation in the story, this as the "prophet" of the cult of the Jeedi.
I most enjoyed the struggle faced by Tahiri with the personality imposed on her while she was held captive by the Yuuzhan Vong some time before. It had been surpressed, but she has been dealing with it in this book. I am not sure I am satisfied with the result, but even as I read the next book in the series, it is still an evolving issue in the storyline.
Of course, there is success along the way, but there are surprising discoveries made both by Luke and Leia. The open question is: how will these discoveries made both by the Galactic Alliance and the Yuuzhan Vong affect the fate of both in the galaxy.
Despite the way the book drags on in places, if you are a fan of the Star Wars universe, you should read this. Not reading this will put you behind the eight ball on following the next book in the epic saga, "The Final Prophesy."
The Best Because It's Over.......2005-10-04
The only reason this has 2 stars is that it was such a relief that this trilogy was over that this book actually seemed decent (sometimes.)
I had a hard time deciphering excatly what the point of this trilogy was. I guess finding the planet, but by the time it happened, I didn't care anymore. I am a huge fan of SW and I always loved Luke Skywalker, but I just wanted to skim the pages that featured him, or Jacen for that matter. I am so tired of his back and forth (talk it out, take action, no wait talk it out.) I am ready for him to just do something already.
Three books to get to Zonama Sekot and you still have no idea what it's significance is. And who is the force heretic? I still don't know.
The only real worthwhile storyline was Tahiri. I have just started The Final Prophesy and had forgotten what it was like to get excited about reading these books again. Thankfully there is no Jacen yet.

The Secret to life.......2007-09-09
I felt the book showed the secret to the spiritual life we all wont to live in this time frame we have. Great Book it will change your life
YAWN.......2007-05-29
I have studied metaphysics for years and I am increasingly careful about becoming too engulfed in theory and not enough practice. This book is not for those new to new thought its way too heavy. Bottom line practicing the Prescene starts with awarness of the Presence right where you are, your conscious mind being the Spirit of God within you. This book just beats around the bush and comes from a standpoint of supplicaton rather than inductive. I would recommend any Ernest Holmes book as an alternative.
An Inspiration beyond time.......2007-03-10
Anyone who has been on the spiritual path and has dedicated there lives to finding the truth about God should read this book. If you are serious and want to accomplish true Self Realization this book should be in your library.
Thy Grace Is My Sufficiency..........2006-10-03
I know a lot of sincere people who are very religious and yet they seem to be so unhappy and so unfulfilled. One even "confessed" to me, "Y'know, John, I believe in God, but I often wish that God was right here to help me go through with what I'm going through..."
I was completely shocked but then I remembered what it was like to believe in God and yet feeling like God was not around when I needed God. It wasn't because God wasn't there, it was because I had this belief that God's Life and my Life were two completely different things. It really blew my mind the first time I walked into a metaphysical church and heard this New Thought practitioner say with complete sincerity and yet with complete humility, "There is One Life and that Life is God and that Life is my life now..."
That simple statement brought tears to my eyes. I had been so brainwashed to think and feel and even act as though I was this completely unworthy, undeserving, sinner; that God the Living Spirit wanted nothing at all to do with my life, but all of the sudden I came face to face (or was it soul to soul?)with the beautiful Truth that my life was/is/and will always be the Life of God. It is what animates me, it is what heals me, restores me, renews me, and blesses me in every moment. To get to this point of knowing and feeling that God is Present as Presence, one must learn to sense this Presence, to feel it within every fiber of their being, and the only way we can learn to know that this presence is Present is to get still and when we get still enough to know and feel that this life is all around us and within us, we can be like the Psalmist and say from the depths of our soul, "Be still and know that I am God..."
Our "I AM" is God Itself. Our "I AM" guides us, directs us, leads us out of the wilderness of being alone and afraid and into the green valley of plenty and abundance. This plenty and abundance is already present within us. we do not ask to become rich, we ask God to see the riches that are already within us. we do not ask God to heal us, we ask God to show us how we are already whole and holy beings living in a Whole and Holy universe. Truly, God's Grace is our sufficiency and that everything we could possibly want, need, or desire is already present and we just have to be willing to let it flow through us, as us.
This book makes you realize that our purpose here is be that place/that space of Love, of Peace, of Goodness. We must not allow our vision to become clouded with thoughts of war, hatred, poverty and lack. We must put our attention and our focus on Heaven rather than hell...on God rather than sin...on Peace rather than war. This book will help you to remember that in each and every moment, God is and it is through this simple yet powerful awareness that God is always present where miracles take place. Miracles are supposed to happen. Miracles are our birthright.
If you are new to this way of thinking, welcome! Welcome to Life! Welcome to a new way of thinking, a new way of feeling, a new way of being in the world but not of the world. And if you have been in New Thought for awhile and haven't yet read this book, do your heart, your mind, your soul a true gift and allow yourself to remember why you are really here -- to Live and to abundantly well.
Peace and Blessings...
