Thirty-five billion people from throughout Earth's history were resurrected along the great and winding waterways of Riverworld. Most began life anew--accepting without question the sustenance provided by their mysterious benefactors. But a rebellious handful burned to confront the unseen masters who controlled their fate--and these few launched an invasion that would ultimately yield the mind-boggling truth.
Now Riverworld's omnipotent leaders have been confronted, and the renegades of Riverworld--led by the intrepid Sir Richard Francis Burton--control the fantastic mechanism that once ruled them. Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2005-10-18
The unfavorable reviews of this book kept me from buying it. But finally I couldn't resist finding out how Farmer closed out the series. Buy, was I pleasently surpirsed. Of the 5 RiverWorld books in the series, book 1 was my favorite while book 5 is my second favorite.
Book 5 closes the show sure but what leads to the close is fascinating to me. The discussions the characters have is stimulating and the events that occur in the tower are entertaining.
Don't let the unfavorable reviews disuade you from reading this book. If you liked the existential undertones in the previous 4 books, you'll really like this one.
A return to Riverworld.......2005-06-04
One of the questions I hear most often from sci-fi and fantasy fans is "But what happened next?" This is the reason the most successful series have so many subsequent books and fan-fiction stories written; when a world is evocative, you want to hear more.
The Riverworld story was absolutely finished with Book 4, and Farmer could easily have stopped there. However, he was curious about what might transpire when the power of the Riverworld falls into the wrong (?) hands, so he continued the series for one more book.
Do not attempt to read this book without reading the rest of the series, and don't feel that you have to continue if you were satisfied with the end of The Magic Labyrinth. Gods of Riverworld brings the story to a more definite close, albeit not one that I particularly liked.
Note that one of the book's two protagonists is Peter Frigate, who many readers (including myself) found absolutely an insufferable example of author egotism. If you'd had enough of Frigate by the end of book four, you're probably not going to like book five.
Overly long.......2005-05-10
At first I was going to rate this book 2 stars. Then once I finished I realized I liked it better, and raised my rating.
This book is definitely the worst in the series. While the other books show the difficulties and struggle of people trying to get to the tower, spanning several years and with many different conflicts and enemies, this book takes place in a realatively short time in a small space, the tower or giant grail.
Filled with overlong backgrounds on many of the characters, this book is mostly a discussion on various points of philosophy, not really a continuation of the Riverworld saga.
The first few pages, a few pages in the middle and the last half chapter all progress the story and were the redeeming quality of the book. The rest was a buch of irritating dialogues and asides describing character histories.
If you liked the other books in the series, be prepared for disappointment. Still I did enjoy knowing what happened to the characters after they got to the tower. If you skim the backgrounds and the philosophy discussions, this book is a nice one to have read.
Pretty bad.......2004-06-16
This book wasn't necessary. Book 4 ties up pretty much everything and this book is simply tedium ad infinitum. Lots of people playing in their private paradises, etc.
Somewhat arbitrarily, a lot of what is explained in book 4 turns out to be a lie. Guess that makes sense, as X is more or less nuts, but still annoying
Didn't age well for me.......2004-06-12
Try as I might, I could not get into this book as much as I wanted to. I originally read this book (all of the series) back in 1987-8 and I remember liking the books quite a bit. Now the writing seemed stilted and the plot heavy handed.
Book Description
She couldn't mend his wounded body . . . but could she heal his heart? Being a navy SEAL is more than a career to Alan "Frisco" Francisco -- it is his whole identity. But now a bullet has threatened that existence. How can he function in combat when he can barely walk? Still, despite the doctor's warnings, Frisco is determined to achieve a full recovery.
But the unexpected appearance of his abandoned niece leaves Frisco with little time for anything but dealing with the five-year-old girl. He knows even less about parenting than about how to mend his broken body. And there is no way he's going to accept offers of help from his neighbor Mia Summerton. He doesn't need anyone's help . . . not to care for his niece, not to learn to accept his limitations and certainly not to fall in love.
Customer Reviews:
A Brockmann gem.......2006-12-28
Alan "Frisco" Francisco finds himself at the bottom of his second floor condo facing life as a civilian. The former Navy SEAL suffered a knee injury during a mission five years earlier and no longer has full use of his leg. He balks at being offered a job as a SEAL trainer and decides to instead drown his sorrows in the home he rarely comes back to. His neighbor Mia Appleton is a little too friendly for his tastes and when she innocently tells him that he should get a place on the first floor, he practically growls at her. But Frisco's plans for drowning are put on hold when his sister dumps five year old Natasha on his doorstep so that she can go to detox, putting Frisco in a role he has never prepared for.
Mia discovers that the career soldier is more than she imagined, and when Frisco finds that he has to rely on help from others, Mia is happy to oblige. As he begins to rely on her more, and their feelings become more intense, the thought of being incapacitated for life makes Frisco run from his feelings. At the same time his sister's former lover is starting to make waves and threats against Natasha. When those threats become a reality, he calls on the salt water cowboys to aid in the rescue.
Brockmann's third in the SEAL Alpha Team series (Prince Joe; Forever Blue) is one of her more bittersweet stories, as Frisco is stripped of his identity and is faced with an uncertain future he is not sure he wants to burden another with.
The Kind of Man You Want..........2005-06-22
A seeming installment from one of Suzanne Brockmann's naval series, or at least a revisiting of familiar characters from certain books-including FOREVER BLUE; PRINCE JOE; and HARVARD'S EDUCATION??-FRISCO'S KID is about a man who loses himself when he loses the only thing that he feels has ever defined him-that is, his career as an active Navy SEAL, when he suffers a debilitating knee injury. With the loss of his title, it is the opinion of Lieutenant Allen Francisco that he has also lost his right to respect, his identity and his right to be called a man. Lt. "Frisco" begins to hope that maybe he can be more than Frisco-the-Navy-SEAL after he meets his polar opposite in the exquisite body of teacher, Mia Summerton. Behind her exotic beauty is a strong, sexy woman who is ready to disagree with him on everything from government spending to gun control. Frisco wonders if it is too much to hope that she is a woman who is also willing to love a Navy Seal who has learned that he will never be that same Navy Seal he once was.
Allen Francisco is just the kind of man any woman would want...to fix. Frisco has had enough bad luck and heartbreak to make the most independent woman's nurturing and protective instincts go into overdrive: he is the product of a broken home, a drunken father. He is the person in his family expected to take on the burdens of others without complaining. And in spite of the fact that he is well-loved by his friends, as an adult as he did when he was a child, Frisco believes that the only way he will ever `matter,' is if other people think he mattes. To Frisco, the only reason why people would ever think Allen Francisco mattered is because he is a Navy SEAL.
Psychologically, after Frisco injured himself, he fell into a dark hole of self-pity, shame and frustration that manifested itself in bouts of rage and drinking. His tender moments-when he was `fathering' his niece or when he felt particularly dejected-made ME want to take care of him, to hold him, etc. As Mia thought to herself many times, Frisco was never really in a place to be `ready' for love. He needed and wanted comfort, physical and otherwise. And it seems that Mia gave that to him. I could understand, as a woman and as someone with a big heart, falling under the spell of Frisco's tragic appeal mixed in with his aesthetic beauty. But I couldn't see someone in Frisco's stage of grief and loss (over his abilities and his career) REALLY falling in-love.
This book is great, if you're not picky about delving into the psychological reasons that your lead characters are together. Well, I am picky, and I thought that Mia and Frisco got together for many reason, and none of them were for love. I just wish this book could somehow be a prequel with the next book starting with the words `THREE YEARS LATER....'
It Was Very Sweet and Poignant, But It Was Not Love.
His story is a little different from the rest..........2004-06-24
Alan (Frisco) Francisco's story is a little different from the other's in the Navy SEALS. Frisco had serious knee injury during his last mission. He has spent the last 5 years in the Naval hospital having numerous surgeries and rehab trying hard to get his knee back into shape so he can rejoin the SEALS. And hs has just been told that it's as good as it's going to get. He is released from the hospital and retired from the Navy (unless he is willing to take that instructor's position that they are holding open for him). He heads to a condo he purchased years ago- the only place he has to call "home" if that's what you want to call it. An apartment with a bed, table and couch- dirty clothes from his last visit over 5 years ago still in the corner, and a 6 pack of beer in the frig. Boy, is he down in the dumps. What is in his future? Well, all he knows is that he doesn't need anyone's help (he thinks).
The apartment that has been empty for the past 5 years, next to Mia Summerton, has a light on in it all of a sudden. And Mia is curious. She's a teacher at the local high school and single - and did I mention a "knock-out" to look at with black hair down to her thighs. She gets up the nerve to knock on the door of the apartment only to have a 6'tall, muscular man using a cane in the worst of moods answer it. His charms are definitely not coming through right now. In fact, I think it was lost in the whiskey bottle laying on the floor. The wrong type of sparks fly between Frisco and Mia, Mia trying to be friendly and Frisco thinking he is none of her business.
Then Frisco's sister shows up on crutches herself only to leave her 5 year old daughter on his door steps while she admits herself into a detox center. Now Frisco who can't even hardly take care of himself has a 5 year old to take care of. Things get complicated - but fortunately Mia is there to see that help is needed during the impossible times and is still willing to offer a helping hand. Times like just getting the groceries up the stairs to the apartment. Frisco can bearly get himself up the stairs much less carrying groceries with him. Well the story is a good one. It really deals with Frisco's difficulty in accepting that he is going to have to move on... active Navy SEAL is no longer an option and Life is NOT over yet! Unless he wants to end it in a whiskey bottle like his family have done. And Mia sure doesn't need to get involved with someone who has the problems psychological like Frisco has - the physical can be overcome... But she is too good-hearted to just sit and let him suffer and watch his niece suffer too, because she has been uprooted and is unsure of life now. The story is very moving- don't you know that has happened to a lot of veterans that have had to return home with injuries. It is sweet story- one of pride and understanding. Then there is always an underlying story, too. A guy named Dwayne comes looking for Frisco's sister that claims she owes him BIG BUCKS. And he wants his money back now with interest. He roughs Frisco up and claims he'll be back. Now what is the story about Dwayne? Frisco has to recover from knee injuries as well as find out that his niece, Mia, and he are in danger if they don't deal with Dwayne and his hit men. It is something that Frisco can't handle himself in the end and he request his SEAL Buddies to assist him. That's fun seeing all of the guys get back together. Anyway...
It's a great story and one worth reading as well as sharing with others.
Once a Seal always a Seal........2004-04-30
Alan "Frisco" Fransisco is a Navy Seal who was injured on a mission 5 years ago. He has only ever wanted to be a Seal and does not know how to be anything else. After 5 years and multiple operations he is told his knee will never let him be able to back out in the field and is devastated. He retreats to his condo on the California coast. He needs no ones help and feels that the Navy has given up on his though he is offered a teaching position.
Mia is the freethinking peace-loving neighbor to Frisco who is drawn to him, though he is to stubborn for his worn good.
The second day Frisco is at the condo his sister drops his niece off as she goes off to detox. Frisco knows only that he loves Tasha with all his heart but not only is he in no mental condition to take care of a 5-year-old girl but is not even sure how to do it.
When Frisco's sisters ex-boyfriend comes to demand money from Frisco's sister things start to get dangerous. You will follow the characters as they try to stay alive, get kidnapped, and as Frisco finally asks for help, and Mia and Frisco falling in love.
Note this book was originally published as a Silhouette Romance. Not bad but her recent ones are ALOT better!

wonderful, rollicking stuff..........2005-08-31
...this rivals the best of Kerouac in its uninhibited portrayal of the joyous excesses of the Beat Generation....in fact, it is much less inhibited than any fiction K. wrote (his Buddhist writings are another story)....Kamstra uses some real names, which for those in the know is great fun...the book rises to a wonderful bacchanalian crescendo in North Beach....catch it if you can.

Book Description
The Rebels have taken the Imperial headquarters world of Coruscant, but their problems are far from over. A killer virus called Krytos is spreading among the population, and fomenting a counter-revolution, at the same time as the treason trial of Rebel hero Tycho Celchu. And X-wing pilot Corran Horn, given up for dead in "Iceheart"'s inescapable prison, discovers an extraordinary power in himself--the power of the Force!
Customer Reviews:
Rogue Squadron to the rescue!.......2007-08-20
The Krytos Trap (by Michael Stackpole) continues the saga of Rogue Squadron. In this case, Rogue Squadron is trying to stabilize Curuscant (the former Imperial capital that was captured in Wedges Gamble) that is being racked by the Krytos disease that Iceheart had planted before turning the capital over to the Rebels. In the backdrop, Tycho Celchu is being tried for killing Corran Horn. Like the previous Rogue Squadron books, this one moves fairly quickly. Mr. Stackpole has proven very adept with this series and entertaining. Our favorite characters are back and there's some good twists in the plot (fairly predictable, but then this is Star Wars). My biggest disappointment is the lack of space combat. Rogue Squadron flies X-Wings and should be combating Imperial forces. Doing diplomatic missions and functioning as attorneys is a little out of what I expected. Despite these weaknesses, this a good and fun book. A solid 4 star performance by Mr. Stackpole and I'm looking forward to continuing the saga of Rogue Squadron!
The Rogue Squadron Tetralogy, Book 3.......2007-05-26
I understand that this series was capitalizing on the popularity of a computer game, but it would have been better if it didn't have the title of "X-Wing."
That minor beef aside, the first 4 books of this series form a tetralogy featuring the exploits of the ace starfighter squadron. For post-Return of the Jedi novels that are not about Luke, Han and Leia, these books are not bad.
As for the best novels from the era of the movie saga, I highly recommend the following 5-star novels:
Cloak of Deception (Star Wars)
Shadow Hunter (Star Wars: Darth Maul)
Labyrinth of Evil (Star Wars, Episode III Prequel Novel)
Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Shadows of the Empire (Star Wars)
This is Star Wars.......2005-11-18
When you think of Star Wars, you think of space battles, lightsabers, the Empire, and impossible adventure. This one has it all. Corran Horn, thought dead by the Republic, finds himself trying to escape an Imperial prison. In the process, he finds himself in a forgotten collection of Jedi antiques. This scene is possibly one of the greatest in the E.U.
The book is just as good as the first two, if not a little better than the second one.
Lots of action, and the appearance of Luke Skywalker is a welcome addition. Highly suggested for Star Wars fans.
The series keeps getting better........2005-09-17
I am really impressed with the x-wing series. The action was fast enought to keep you going. It also has a bit of intrigue as to who the spy is. This is a really good read and you should definetly read this, but read the first two books before this if you haven't.
Everything you could ever want in a Star Wars book... and more.......2005-06-27
X-Wing Book 3: The Krytos Trap (1996.) Book three in a nine-part series.
INTRODUCTION:
The Star Wars film series is, without question, the greatest science fiction series of all time. George Lucas captured the minds of people young and old across the world. But as anyone knows, there were only three films (this was before the prequels), and for many people, this just wasn't enough. And thus, the Star Wars Expanded Universe was born. The Expanded Universe consisted of comic books, video games, novels, and other media. Many of the stories focused on the characters in the films, many focused on unknown characters from the same universe. Among the authors who tried their hands at creating Star Wars novels was Michael A. Stackpole. In the mid-late nineties, he created the Star Wars X-Wing series, a nine-book series loosely inspired by the Star Wars PC game of the same name. Read on for my review of the third book in this series, The Krytos Trap.
STORYLINE:
It's been two-and-a-half years since the Rebel Alliance triumphed at the Battle Of Endor and Emperor Palpatine's death. Following an intense battle, the Rebellion has conquered Coruscant, the former Imperial capital. Unfortunately, the Rebellion and the New Republic are in shambles following the conquering of the world. Ysanne Isard, the new overlord of the Empire, LET them conquer the world because she introduced a virus onto the world that kills and spreads quickly. She is now trying to capture and withhold as much bacta as possible, as it is the only known cure against the virus. And that's not the worst of the problems for the Rebellion. Corran Horn, one of the finest young pilots in Rogue Squadron, was presumed to be killed in the offensive that allowed the Rebellion to take Coruscant, and fellow Rebel Tycho Celchu is being put on trial for Corran's murder. What the Rebels don't know is that Corran is alive, and plotting an escape from the legendary Imperial prison which holds him. As Corran plots his escape, the war between the Empire and a Rebellion divided rages on.
OPINIONS:
Overall, I was very satisfied with this story. This was the third of Stackpole's Star Wars novels I read (I'm working on the X-Wing series as we speak), and I am very satisfied with what I read. I personally thought Wedge's Gamble (Book 2 in the series) was a bit of a disappointment in that it was a departure from the aerial combat, but Stackpole redeems himself beautifully here. In this novel (and all other X-Wing novels), the classic trio of Luke, Leia, and Han have EXTREMELY SMALL roles (Han doesn't appear at all in this volume.) Stackpole instead focuses mostly on new characters, with the occasional old favorite like Wedge Antilles and Admiral Ackbar. I'm reading the X-Wing novels in order, and thusfar this one is the best one I have read so far. It's an exciting, emotional story, and if you preferred the space/air battles of the series to the conflicts on the ground, the X-Wing series should be right up your alley. If you strictly want to follow the exploits of Luke, Leia, Han, and all the other classic main characters, though, bypass this series. But if you want high-flying action that many stories lack, this one's for you.
OVERALL:
In the end, I must say that I am very satisfied with this story, and I am not at all reluctant to say that it would make for a fantastic movie - if George Lucas decides to make future Star Wars movies, this is a novel I would strongly recommend converting to the big screen. If you're a Star Wars fan who wants to go beyond the films, Stackpole's X-Wing series should appeal to you - that is, unless, you just want to follow the exploits of the main classic trilogy characters. Just make sure to start with Book 1 and read them in order, or you may be left dazed and confused.

Book Description
Sharing Wisdom offers a simple step-by-step approach to everyday monitoring.
Customer Reviews:
The chapters are too short........2002-01-13
While his ideas are good, each is only given a page or two of explanation. I felt like I was reading the Cliff Notes edition.
Companion on the Journey of life.......2000-07-11
A wonderful group of 40 short chapters (1-3 pages each) to assist all of us in the journey of life, and in journeying with others through life. I found this book to be an excellent way to start the day, or pause to refresh and perhaps gain perspective. It is a book I'll be reading over again, both individual chapters and from cover to cover.
Robert J. Wicks has a talent for seeing the simple in the most complex of situations. His "Kitchen Table Wisdom" is appropriate for all our relationships, be it the corporate executive mentoring a rising star, or a parent guiding an offspring through the maze of adolescence. His counsel will enrich the friendships we all treasure, from spouses and significant others to the car pool or water cooler discussions. Robert J. Wicks brings many years of professional "mentoring" experience to his writing, and yet is able to distill his knowledge and wisdom so it is useful for the common person. One of my favorite thoughts he offered in this book was to have "low expectations, and high hopes" for others. Then we will always be surprised!
This book would be understandable and a good read for all age groups, from the high school student involved in a peer counseling program, to the mother of toddlers joining in the challenges that come with that occupation, to the professional mentor - psychologist, spiritual director, pastor, to all of us a friends. This book has something for everyone, as we are all "Companions on the Journey of life."
I recommend this book... Everyone can find 3-5 minutes during the day to read a chapter, then the rest of the day will be filled with opportunities to use the wisdom gained.
