In The Fighting Agents, W.E.B. Griffin retells the story (previously told in Behind the Lines) of Wendell Fertig, a U.S. Army officer who promoted himself to general and led a ragtag guerrilla force against the Japanese after the fall of the Philippines in 1943. This time, however, Griffin focuses his attention on the OSS, which, among other things, was tasked with resupplying Fertig and reinforcing his efforts to undermine the Japanese war machine. In this fourth volume of a bestselling series featuring the American intelligence service during World War II, James Whittaker, a rakish, romantic army air corps captain who happens to be a close family friend of OSS chief Wild Bill Donovan, is assigned to sneak into the Philippines by submarine and bring gold, arms, and war materiel to the renegade general.
Simultaneously, another OSS team tries to carry out a critical mission: getting a German atomic scientist out of Budapest and into allied hands before Hitler's armies can perfect and unleash the weapon that could win the war for the Axis powers. And in Cairo, a quiet, unassuming pilot named Darmstadter is drafted by the OSS for another highly unlikely mission. Griffin spices up his realistically drawn scenes of military operations, weapons, and training with a somewhat improbable love story focusing on Whittaker and a female OSS operative, but one suspects it's merely a ruse to draw in distaff readers. Still, the action ranges from Washington to California, Egypt to London, and all points in between, and Griffin's knowledge of military hearts, minds, and missions has won him a devoted following through five separate series of novels of men (and some women) in battle. --Jane Adams

Customer Reviews:
A Classic Griffin Effort, but..........2005-11-19
If you like W.E.B. Griffin, you will enjoy this book. It features two different OSS operations on opposite sides of the globe. Both stories are good and are told in classic Griffin style.
I was a bit disappointed, however, because I chose this book for the story of Wendell Fertig and his guerillas in the Phillipines. Despite indications to the contrary on the book jacket, the Fertig story represented only about 20% of the book. The balance was devoted to the story of getting scientists out of Germany through Hungary. That story was good, but it was not why I chose this book.
The Fighting Agents - A Great W.E.B. Griffin Starter Series.......2002-10-23
For those who have not tried W.E.B. Griffin because they don't wish to commit to reading 9 volumes in The Corps or Brotherhood of War series, I highly recommend trying this 4-book series (#1 Last Heroes, #2 Secret Warriors, #3 Soldier Spies, and #4 Fighting Agents). While I would love to see future installments of the Men at War Series, I thought that Griffin does a very good job of "wrapping up" with The Fighting Agents. I enjoyed it the most out of the 4 in this particular series because I felt that it was more operational and thus contained more action and suspense.
Long overdue for another sequal.......2001-08-30
I started this series about 15 years ago when it was published under the nom-de -plume of "Alex Baldwin". W.E.B. Griffin's writing style was really evident at the time--too unique and "salty" to imitate. Now that the series is in print under the Griffin name I am wondering whether he plans to continue the the plot to a time-line conclusion. In this , the fourth volume of the O.S.S. saga , the major character Richard Cannidy , plans and executes the extraction of Eric Fulmar , Gisella Dyer , and Professor Dyer from Hungary. As a separate counter-plot , Captain Jim Whittaker returns to the Phillipines with aid for "General" Wendell Fertig who is attempting to conduct operations against the Japanese on the island of Mindinao. These operations are set against the background of the machinations of the O.S.S. hierarchy , the sexual/bedroom antics of the protagonists , and an episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous". I particularly liked Commander John Dolan as a character , and the cameo of Joe Kennedy Jr. seemed correct. In this series , tho' W.E.B. tries to compress alot of subplots into far too little space to be satisfying. If this is the end of the series , then the author needs to concentrate on The Corps , which I consider to be his "Flagship" series. The Wendell Fertig story was fleshed out pretty well in "Behind the Lines".
On the other hand , one more volume in "Men at War" could conclude this particular timeline in a satisfying manner.
Overall this particular volume was an enjoyable read ; not one of W.E.B.'s very best , but good enough for 4 stars.
Perpetuating a Myth.......2001-08-20
W.E.B. Griffin's books have been praised for so-called "historical accuracy." However, when he refers to branches of military service during World War Two, he repeatedly speaks of "Army Air Corps," the "Air Corps" and the "USAAC" (for Unites States Army Air Corps).
But, there was no such branch of service during World War Two.
It was almost six months BEFORE Pearl Harbor - and America's entry into World War Two - that the old reference of "Army Air Corps" was officially dropped, and this branch of the service became the "Army Air Force" (AAF). This happened on June 27, 1941.
So, some six months prior to America's entry into World War Two, the old "Air Corps" ceased to be. Those who served in the Army's air arm during World War Two actually served in the Army Air FORCE, and certainly NOT in the Army Air CORPS. (Touching bases with the historical branch of the United States Air Force would have clarified this matter prior to the publication of any of Griffin's books.)
If W.E.B. Griffin is to be praised for "historical accuracy," then he'll have to re-write his books and correct this mistake. As the publisher of his books, Penguin Putnam, Inc. should have caught this error long ago. It certainly detracts from the thread of authenticity that the author is obivously trying to impart. W.E.B. Griffin now has on the market a multitude of books of varying titles in which this glaring error continues to perpetuate itself. It's a shame that such fine stories have to be tarnished with such continued inaccuracies.
Another Winner.......2001-08-12
As always the weaving of historical fact and fictional characters continues to amaze me. I have read most of his war novels and they all are fine offerings. only one mistake, on page 243 the discription of D as dah dah dah is actually o not d. Only a Navy ex-radioman second class would have caught that and what would it matter with his rich discriptions of everything else.
Product Description
In the Philippines, a ragtag American guerrilla army battles the Japanese, under a most unusual commander. In Budapest, an agent must keep two key prisoners from being interrogated by the Gestapo, his only choices being to rescue them - or kill them. In Washington, an Army Air Corps captain suddenly finds himself assigned deep under the sea, his mission an improbable one of submarines, supplies, arms, and gold. And in Cairo, an undistinguished pilot named Darmstadter wonders why in the world the OSS is interested in his services, only to find out in the most dramatic way possible - and to become a hero in the process. Fourth in the MEN AT WAR series.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A885424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research will be used to evaluate the feasibility of robotically, or remote-controlled firefighting nozzles aboard air-capable ships. A numerical model was constructed and analyzed, using the program CPD-ACS, of a fire hose stream being deflected by the influence of a crosswind, tailwind, or headwind. The model is intended to predict the reach of the fire hose stream, indicate the distribution pattern, and estimate the volume of fire fighting agent available at the end of the stream. Preliminary results for a two fluid cross flow model have been obtained.

Book Description
The 20th century has seen improvements in both public health and disease prevention which, in turn, have had a dramatic impact on our lives. Success in preventing infection by vaccination and treating infection with antibiotics led some to believe that infectious disease was a thing of the past. However, the adaptability of pathogens and the emergence of new diseases has presented microbiologists with a fresh set of challenges as we enter the new millennium. While celebrating past successes and highlighting developing problems, this volume aims to address some of the issues facing microbiologists in the future. Covering a wide range of topics, it will provide an invaluable resource for microbiologists and an excellent reference for advanced students.

Loved this book.......2007-10-03
I've read it several times and I never get tired of it. It's a great story and well written. The characters are well developed and the entire book goes at a great pace.
wow.......2007-03-04
oh my gosh, this was so good. I think this was one of her best work. Along with (Carolina Moon, Hidden riches, Private scandals, river's end and The reef)
Spectacular!!.......2007-02-09
Could I have given this book more than 5 stars, I would have. When I began to read it and realize it was about magic and thievery, I rolled my eyes and decided to read it anyway. Who could imagine the main male character, the hero, being a thief and a magician? Well, as it turned out, it was one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. I absolutely loved the romance between Luke and Roxy and, in fact, think I fell a little in love with Luke myself. Roxy was also a very likeable character as was Max, Lily and the rest of their entourage. A fun, exciting, hard to put down read.
The Very Best Romance Novel from Nora Roberts for me!.......2006-05-16
I simply adore this book and it's what made me go out to buy every other Nora Roberts novel. It just amazes me the chemistry between Luke and Roxanne. Everytime I read it I can't get over the excitement and the smile it brings to me as they barb back and forth. It's just an amazing story over the course of growing up together and how it all develops. Roxanne is smart and sassy and Luke is just too cool. This romantic duo shines and no one else compares to them yet for me. My very favorite romance.
Honestly Illuminating.......2006-03-16
Magic, mystery, romance and burglary are all part of this extremely captivating adventure. I fell in love with the characters immediately even knowing they were "good" thieves - hence "Honest Illusions." The book begins with Luke Callahan coming back into Roxanne Nouvelle's life after a 5 year absence and then immediately flashes back to the time approximately 10 years previous when Roxy was 8 and Luke 12 when Luke joined the carnival w/Max Nouvelle, his daughter, Roxy, Lily, Mouse and their right hand caretaker back in New Orleans, LeClerc. The flashback continues throughout more than half of the book, setting up the reader for the background information needed to tell the full story. I felt it was necessary and definitely kept the reader interested to go back to the beginning, unlike some of the reviewers who felt the flashback was too long. The book then picks up to the current time, but to me, the continuity of the story completely hinged on the background information. Since I don't want to give any of the plot away, I will end my review right here. This is a story that I would definitely re-read and hated to see end; a sure fire plot for an excellent movie!
Book Description
Number-one New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, with her powerful gift of storytelling, brings together three tales of passion and deception. Whether to a cop or a con-man, the heroines of these three novels find falling in love is the easy part. But uncovering hidden betrayals or lethal obsessions may be the most important. These moving and engrossing stories never fail to deliver.
"Nora Roberts just keeps getting better and better." --Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Customer Reviews:
Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25
You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.
beware small type.......2007-01-15
i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.
So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.
Very Good Reads.......2007-01-14
If you are an avid reader as I aa and a Nora Roberts fan too, you can't beat these three great books combined in one volume.
I am certain that you will enjoy these three earlier works by Nora Roberts.

True Betrayals/Montana Sky/Sanctuary.......2006-08-31
Truly a great grouping of three story lines. Each one kept me on the edge of my seat and reluctant to put down until I completed it. Descriptions of location and events put you right there. I can't wait to read more of this author.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Yorick has gained some companions. Agent 355 is working for the mysterious Culper Ring, some sort of ultra-secret spook organisation. It is not quite clear who is pulling her strings, or the strings of her agency. There ia also a scientist who specialises in biology and genetics, and she hopes that Yorick and Ampersand can help her make a cure.
They all have to survive an ex-prison town, a crazed Amazon cult, and Yorick's sister, first.

Is this a joke? Yea, all us feminists would create a terror group to chase you men down. I really appreciate how this 'cartoonist' depicted feminists (you know:the vote, equal rights, maternity/paternity leave, sexual harrassment/domestic abuse laws, reproductive rights, careers-all us evil women) would become crazy killers.

Each TPB I read leaves me wanting more. I can't wait for the next one. Interesting story, good art, funny and my girlfriend likes reading them too!
Long Live Yorick!.......2006-03-14
From the excitement of the first volume, we move into the second. Everything is building and building and the action is twice as intense and gut wrenching as in the first volume. The town that they go to is great and the characters are fantastic. I totally love Yorick. He's just a regular guy stuck in a crapstorm of craziness! This is a great series that just keeps getting better. The books are addicting.
Someone on the back of Book Two that says something about the comic being like a good TV show. if TV was this good, no one would ever leave the frickin' house!
Book Description
David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.
Customer Reviews:
Great Information, questionable point of view.......2007-08-03
For a book just over 200 pages, this book certainly packs quite a punch. Currie's text provides a great historical and biblical history as justification for the Catholic church. As someone starting my journey from a Protestant background to the Catholic Church, this book was and will be a great resource to me in my journey. The chapters on The Eucharist, Salvation, and Mary were especially informative as well as beautifully written.
Yet, what I found as most interesting in this book is that Currie still demonstrates the very Fundamentalist need to justify everything through the use of the Bible: the very thing he says is not necessary due to the equal validatity of oral tradition. It is fascinating that Currie's previous belief in sola scriptura is precisely what led him to Catholocism.
After completing this book, I realized that the use of the words in Currie's title: "Born Again Catholic" could not be more accurate. I had a hard time getting on board not with Currie's defense of Catholocism, but rather the manner or tone in which he defends it. Currie's "THIS COULD NOT BE WRONG" attitude is so similar to what I have seen from Born Again Christians (Fundamentalists) all of my life.
I know there are plenty of practicing Catholics (not to mention clergy) who adore their faith and all that comes with it, but still sees some issues with doctrine. This type of dialogue is what has led to changes in doctrine throughout the ages. In one section of the book, Currie discusses how horrified he was when a priest told him he would never tell someone not to use birth control. It seems that Currie is not comfortable being able to make his own decisions about his Faith unless his religious organization has some justification. Although I understand this, I do not believe that this is the attitude every good Catholic shares. Through the masses I have attended at different parishes, it is also obvious that different churches emphasize some doctrines more than others, something that Currie clearly does not approve or even recognize as a reality in his text.
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-03-30
Raised Baptist in the 70s I was bombarded with Anti-Catholic literature and misinformation. By High School I was working on a Catholic Youth retreat and realized that much of that information couldn't be true, yet some of the thoughts and teachings definitely stuck with me even through my years as a "mainline" Protestant.
Near the beginning of the book Currie talks about crying when JFK died, not because the President was dead but because he was going to "burn in hell." He also talks about being frightened when he would come home from school and couldn't find his mother. Scared that he had been "left behind."
If the thoughts of a child terrified by the possible misinterpretations of the Book of Revelation, or the judgemental nature of some of our beliefs bring a tear to your eye or you have experienced similar feelings in your life - as a child or an adult, then you need this book.
Written not for publication but to help explain his move to reconcile with the Catholic Church after being raised Fundamentalist, David's book is an excellent source for any Protestant.
He spends a good deal of time working through his own issues in trying to not become Catholic. Trying to get answers that many of us have searched for during the course of our lives his journey keeps bring him back to the Church. This journey enables him to produce and excellent and very well laid out belief system for what he is discovering.
Most importantly this book is something that ANYONE can read and should not be offended by in the least. You may not agree with his conclusions but you will definitely appreciate his search for Christ and the Truth.
My Baptist mother is currently reading my copy of this. As I'm about to start my RCIA I have had little hope that she might one day follow to where I believe God is leading my family. This book might just change her mind. It's truly that good.
A must read for Catholic waverers and for curious Evangelicals.......2007-02-08
Mr. Currie's presentation is both personal and pedantic. He comes to his topic as a discussion of his own personal journey through faith, but does a wonderful job of presenting the scriptural and historical case that bolsters his own reconciliation with the Roman Church. He presents the arguments of both sides of many issues separating Roman Catholics from protestants in a very readable and down to earth way. I am sure that there are more exhaustive treatises on this subject (and I intend to look for them), but this is the most readable I have found so far. In several of the reviews, Karl Keating's book is mentioned. I have also read that, and while I would recommend that book as well, if someone told me they could only read one, or wanted to start with one, I would recommend Mr. Currie's book first.
Informative reading.......2007-01-13
I found this book very informative and easy to read. It is easier to read than the other more well known book on the same subject.
