And as the dragonriders grappled with the ending of an era,T'lion, Readis, and the dolphins faced the start of a new one: revivingthe bond between land and ocean dwellers -- and resurrecting the dreamsof the first colonists of Pern!

The Dolphins of Pern.......2007-10-02
Another facet of the Pern stories. McCaffrey adds another intelligent species to the dragons. Good read.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Boy overboard. Luckily, there are a bunch of dolphins around to help the poor wet brat out. Or, shipfish as the localls call them.
The boy makes friends with the beasts, and his ability to communicate with them becomes important in the defence of the planet and in increasing the technological level of the society. Dolphins ain't dumb.
Great if you like Sci Fiction.......2007-05-13
The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too
For Fans.......2007-03-20
If, like me, you've read several of the other books in the "Pern" series, this book provides a pleasant return to an engaging scifi world. Names and places are familiar and that makes it an easy book to get into. The downside to THE DOLPHINS OF PERN, however, is twofold. First, there are a great many references to characters and events from previous books that, because it's been a while since my last visit to Pern, I had only vague recollections of. It would have been nice if people and events from previous stories were brought in with more background to refresh the reader's memory.
Second, and more importantly, the story has almost no plot. It reads as a chronicle of events that are, in some cases, almost unrelated. The issue between Lord Toric and the other Holders and the Dragonriders, for instance, is straightforward and has no direct connection with the developing relationship between humans and dolphins. Further, the growth of that relationship is very linear, with little that would qualify as a significant complication. Toric simply steps out of line gets his wrists slapped. Additionally, the notion of a "normally" social teenage boy who is so obsessed with dolphins that he is elated with the opportunity to isolate himself from other humans (including girls) for a long period of time is difficult to accept.
THE DOLPHINS OF PERN qualifies as little more than a casual return to the intriguing world of Pern. It's OK as an update of events on Pern, but if you're looking for an actual story, you won't find it here. In my opinion, this is the least intersting book of those I've read in the Pern series, so far. If you're a fan, you might enjoy the revisit, but I don't recommend this installment for casual readers.
This one is okay . . . .......2007-01-25
. . . but certainly not the best of the Pern series.
The concept of dolphins who could communicate with humans was introduced in "Dragonsdawn" and the notion of seemingly intelligent "shipfish" have been seen in several Pern stories.
Now, in "The Dolphins of Pern", the relationship between humans, dragons, and dolphins on Pern is re-established. The book could be viewed as a sequel to "The Renegades of Pern", as much of the action surrounds Jayge, his wife Aramina (the girl who heard dragons) and their son Readis. The book also runs concurrent with many of the events in "All the Weyrs of Pern".
Why only three stars? Because, frankly, the character development is, frankly, unbelievable. Jayge, Aramina, and Readis have all, at different times, been rescued from probable death by dolphins. Readis -- probably twice. Why then are his parents (especially his mother) so against the boy's interest in them? This seems forced to me. (Especially since most of the rest of the Pernese leadership -- including persons whom Jayge and Aramina greatly respect -- and owe much to -- are inclined to permit Readis to pursue his interest to the benefit of all Pern?
Also, once the Oldtimers, the Renegades, the Red Star, etc. have all been dealt with, where do we go for a villain? We've got to invent one, of course! Toric, now Lord Toric of Southern Hold -- who has in other novels been a character on the fringe of trouble -- is now the new designated "bad guy".
Overall, the story seemed too contrived. NOT the best book in the series -- NOT by a long way.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-07-09
Anne McCaffrey stumbles in this mini-story about dolphins helping evacuate the original landing site on Pern after the disastrous eruption of Mt. Garben. This is really a story-fragment, not a full-fledged novella. Unlike -Nerilka's Story-, which *was* a separate novel about the lady who sooths the heartbreak of Moreta's main squeeze, -The Dolphin's Bell- requires that 1 read -Dragondawn- to understand who each character is, & why we should give a damn. This is information that simply is *not* given - &, consequently, we don't.
Don't read this unless you've got -Dragonsdawn- & the time to check out who's who.

From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2003-08-05
I had listened to this story on audio and enjoyed it very much. It details a very long and hard fought journey undertaken by humans with the help of dolphins. This is one of the few McCaffrey stories I've read. Almosta year later after reading this story, I found a song that very well fits the theme of the story. The song is alled High water and its performed by ush. Its on their Hold your Fire CD.
The other side of the story!.......2002-04-16
Another side story well worth reading. This is the story of the second crossing, from the Southern Continent to the Northern Continent. Jim Tillek is in charge of moving all the equipment to the north. This gives more background on the part the dolphins played in Pern's History.
To get the sull feeling of this book, make sure that you have read Dragonsdawn, as the events go together. What is nice about this story, is that there is no need to feel in the background information, as that is what Dragonsdawn is for. The story starts right where it needs to and continues on. It is really nice that we get to know Jim Tillek more. Anne did a wonderful job and the story flows rather smoothly.
A must read for Pern fans, as this gives us all more detail and more background information. A nice short story, that is wonderfully written.
Read this book.......1999-02-19
This is a great book combining 2 of my favorite things dolphins and Pern. This is a very good book. I couldn't put it down.
Interesting story based around the DOLPHINS OF PERN.......1998-08-22
An interesting book revolving around the time of the second crossing, and the dolphins that helped.

Customer Reviews:
I Liked The Book Very Much.......2007-05-16
After reading a couple of chapters I was thinking to myself that the book reminded me of the movie "The Beautician And The Beast." Except for all the obvious reasons it's not of course.
Samantha arrives at Col. William Gregory's mansion in the country to become a Governess for his six adorable daughters. The six girls have had an emotional time with the passing of there mother, and there fathers stick upbringing. Plus Col. Gregory has a secret life that requires to much of his time away from his six little girls. Needless to say the girls want there loving father back, and the new Governess OUT!
Samantha has a sorted past and it comes into play in the secret plot of Col. Gregory's life. However once he finds out Samantha's secret he is disgusted by it and blames her for things gone missing around his home. Eventually he finds out he was wrong and he goes and makes things right again.
I don't want to give to much of the story away because I hate when people say to much in the reviews and the book is ruined. Anyway...the book is really interesting and the sex was very HOT! Plus I really liked all the characters and contrary to some of the other reviews, I didn't think Col. Gregory was a bad man at all. He just needed a woman's guidance in his life to show him the error of his ways and he was good to go. It wasn't like he was abusing his little girls, he was just a single dad making mistakes. Ever parent makes mistakes. At least Col. Gregory was willing to learn from them.
My Favorite Bride.......2006-07-14
I enjoyed this book. This was my first Christina Dodd novel. I would buy another.
An Amazing Book.......2005-09-07
This book is One of my favorites by One of my favorite authors. This is an excellent book If you like the story line of the heroine who has had a hard time trying to make her way and the guy gives her a hard time until the end when he realizes his Collosal mistake. It definately had me sighing as I finished the last page.
My Favorite Bride.......2005-08-11
This was a nice book. It was much like the other books in the governesses series but it was still sweet and an enjoyable read.
My Favorite Bride.......2005-08-03
I really didn't care for this book. The "Hero", Colonel William Gregory was a jerk, plain and simple. The character didn't show any real caring for his children and certainly not for the heroine, Samantha Prendregast. In my opinion, Miss Prendregast's character was the only good thing about this book. She was very likeable. It is a shame that the author paired her with William's character. The Samantha character is the only reason I gave this book the rating of 3 stars, otherwise it would have been 1 star.

In this Hugo-winning 1991 SF novel, Vernor Vinge gives us a wild new cosmology, a galaxy-spanning "Net of a Million Lies," some finely imagined aliens, and much nail-biting suspense.
Faster-than-light travel remains impossible near Earth, deep in the galaxy's Slow Zone--but physical laws relax in the surrounding Beyond. Outside that again is the Transcend, full of unguessable, godlike "Powers." When human meddling wakes an old Power, the Blight, this spreads like a wildfire mind virus that turns whole civilizations into its unthinking tools. And the half-mythical Countermeasure, if it exists, is lost with two human children on primitive Tines World.
Serious complications follow. One paranoid alien alliance blames humanity for the Blight and launches a genocidal strike. Pham Nuwen, the man who knows about Countermeasure, escapes this ruin in the spacecraft Out of Band--heading for more violence and treachery, with 500 warships soon in hot pursuit. On his destination world, the fascinating Tines are intelligent only in combination: named "individuals" are small packs of the doglike aliens. Primitive doesn't mean stupid, and opposed Tine leaders wheedle the young castaways for information about guns and radios. Low-tech war looms, with elaborately nested betrayals and schemes to seize Out of Band if it ever arrives. The tension becomes extreme... while half the Beyond debates the issues on galactic Usenet.
Vinge's climax is suitably mindboggling. This epic combines the flash and dazzle of old-style space opera with modern, polished thoughtfulness. Pham Nuwen also appears in the nifty prequel set 30,000 years earlier, A Deepness in the Sky. Both recommended. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale.Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function. Nobody knows what strange force partitioned space into these "regions of thought," but when the warring Straumli realm use an ancient Transcendent artifact as a weapon, they unwittingly unleash an awesome power that destroys thousands of worlds and enslaves all natural and artificial intelligence.Fleeing the threat, a family of scientists, including two children, are taken captive by the Tines, an alien race with a harsh medieval culture, and used as pawns in a ruthless power struggle. A rescue mission, not entirely composed of humans, must rescue the children-and a secret that may save the rest of interstellar civilization.
Customer Reviews:
6 Stars.......2007-09-12
Vinge has written a phenomenal book. He grabs you from the first moment and doesn't let go. Throughout you never expect the next event- especially the ending. You remain completely interested in the very deeply developed characters, who never seem to fit stereotypes in the slightest. And yet this is totally science fiction. For Vinge has created a fully alternate reality- actually, three alternate realities. He doesn't just touch on them, but fully immerses the reader in the realities of god-like entities; the concept that intelligence and physics become greater and easier to access the further you go out from the Galatic Core; and the hive-pack mind of dog creatures on a planet in the Slow Zone. My mind was wrapped around Vinge's worlds, each of them, as he flitted back and forth between them. It's a great writer who can create a world and make it seem real; it takes a genius to do so with three different realities and hold them all simultaneously. Even deus ex machinas are no longer so, so convincingly has Vinge bent reality for the reader.
There was one unfortunate bit that Vinge suffered from- a common SciFi writer ailment of describing a foreign world without giving the reader anything to understand the new reality with. For a long section of the book I was confused as to what was going on, for there was no traveling observor to help me through it. Once I grasped what was going on I had to go back and read the earlier pages to understand better.
However, this book was so well written, I'd originally give it six stars. I'll deduct a star for the confusion above, and leave it at five.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Multi-bodied wolf people and nasty alien intelligences. Strange mix,
but it seems to work well, when you throw a ship full of human
scientists in trouble from perhaps meddling where they should not have.
Not as good as a Deepness in the Sky, but interesting enough in its own
right. Hard to go wrong with Vinge, really.
Some people just don't get it.......2007-08-06
I am stunned by the negative and so-so reviews of A Fire Upon the Deep. It is quite simply the best SF in a generation, and I should know since I read them all. I have recommended this book to every single person that I know and they can't thank me enough for it. Dozens of my friends have Deep on their short list of best SF books ever. Best BOOKS ever.
Buy it. Read it. It is simply the best out there.
Not For Me.......2007-07-02
I didn't really like this book, but let me start with the good:
The ideas are intrguing, including the Zones, the Tines, the Powers, Transcendence, and others. At times, I was totally sucked into this book by a plot that, despite some reviews here, does not drag. I think some people see a 600-page book and label it 'slow' out of hand. Vinge is definitely an above-average prose technician, especially for this genre.
The bad:
I didn't like the characters, and I didn't feel they were very complex, with the possible exceptions of Woodcarver and Flenser. Some characters were downright annoying, especially Ravna. I couldn't get past the discrepancy between her obvious idiocy and the fact that all other characters defer to her as a pillar of humanity. And, though the plot moved right along, it felt very forced. There is a series of wacky little circumstances that pits the crew together in precisely the potent mix that will wrap the conclusion up in an annoyingly neat little package. And speaking of the ending, it really was just a series of 4 or 5 'happily ever afters' in a row.
I guess this book would qualify more as 'space opera,' despite the inclusion of a lot of interesting science. It's just very fairy-tale, and I don't think that makes it bad, just, as I say in the title, Not For Me. And, to be fair, I read this immediately after Robinson's Mars Trilogy, which is very gritty and realistic. Therefore, this one may have seemed even cuter than it actually is, but still, too sugary for me.
He writes well, there's lots of suspense and excitement, and there are interesting scientific concepts. Just, for me, personally, shallow characters and contrived plot. YMMV. See my listmania to get a feel for the kind of Sci-Fi I really like, before I scare you off of a book you may actually love, lots of people do.
An annoying amalgam of random ideas and plots.......2007-06-17
Joel Fritz (see below if sorted by date) must have read a different book than I did. Despite critical and reader acclaim, I found this book unreadable. After two separate reading attempts, I finished only one-fourth of the book. Vinge tossed in a random assortment of sci-fi ideas, spread the action and characters across a huge and strange universe, and attempted to tie multiple story lines together. By the one-quarter point, I was more annoyed than enthralled, especially since the characters were not appealing.
Vinge should have pared the novel down to the story of the pack-intelligence dogs and the two human children. (Where are good editors when you need them?)

Brings a classic up to date.......2002-10-15
If you have ever tried to read Teresa of Avila and given up, Ruth Burrows may be the guide you need. In Fire Upon the Earth, she clarifies and updates Teresa's great portrait of the inner life. Both women are Carmelite nuns, but Burrows is our contemporary; she deftly bridges the cultural and intellectual chasm that divides us from Teresa's thought.
But Burrows is not merely an interpreter, although she is a wonderful one. She adds her own psychological insights and experience as a woman, nun, contemplative, and spiritual director, and the whole mix forms a powerfully encouraging and challenging message to us in the 21st century.

MY GRANDFATHER'S BLESSING.......2007-07-23
I READ THIS WHILE TRAVELING AND IT IS A VERY INSPIRING BOOK. I LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS BOOK AND LOOK FORWARD TO STARTING THE NEXT VOLUME IN MY SET CALLED KITCHEN TABLE WISDOM.
Ktchen Table Wisdom.......2007-03-16
Reading this book is an experience in healing. I saw in these stories that my problems are not mine, but that problems are common to each of us. I am not alone in this no matter what the trouble is, someone else has gone through it, and that is the key; they have gone through it, lived beyond it, and are now aware of the blessing of problems. This is a book about forgiveness, conscious surrender, and expansion. It will move you to tears and laughter.
1. My Grandfather's Blessing 2. Kitchen Table Wisdom.......2007-03-09
Both books display such intelligence and compassion, along with the ability of the writer to be empathetic to the needs of almost any reader. My husband recently passed away and the books were loaned to me. After reading half of one book, I quickly decided that I must have my own copies, so I bought both books, and have not been disappointed.
Kitchen Table Wisdom.......2007-01-19
This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to connect to themselves on a deeper level. Written by a medical doctor who through her own work and illness has developed a deep sense of compassion for the human condition. The book is also appropriate for any doctor who has treated patients who have experienced pain and loss. This book should be required reading for any healthcare provider as it teaches us that healing and love can be one and the same. This book is also appropriate for family members caring for loved ones who are chronically or terminally ill, and for the those who are coping with life threatening illnesses. You may read this book more than once. I know I will.
Recommend to any physician, medical student or person with chronic or life-threatening disease........2007-01-03
Extremely thoughtful stories with much insight into human behavior and reactions to suffering. Rachel Remen's ability to communicate important messages in short passages makes this easy reading. You'll feel wiser after reading it.
The theme that the terminally ill are a repository of knowledge for what is important in life has profound meaning, but I would have liked to have seen this developed more extensively.
