5 out of 5 stars Genius........2007-07-23

I picked up this book after I bought the album "Slaughter of the Soul" from the Swedish melodic death metal band "At The Gates". Their album title, and lyrics are tied to this book. This is an excellent read. Still disturbing to this day. They way all the violence, rape, and thoughts are portrayed; you would have though it was written within the past 10 years. This is a great read for anyone who is into psych-drama movies, and novels.

4 out of 5 stars The lunatics have taken over the asylum!.......2006-06-22

Not a book to be taken too seriously, IMO, although it touches on some profound philosophical thoughts.

The Diceman of the title is a New York psychiatrist who, fed up with the repetitive routine of life, decides to subordinate the normal rules of society by allowing the throw of the dice to determine his actions. This results in much taboo breaking, and much sex and violence. It's also funny and shocking.

For me the novel comes out of the same stream of thought that brought us Catch 22 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It asks us which of us are the sane ones; those that follow the rules our societies have laid down or those that opt out. Sometimes you have to wonder. It also poses us questions about the nature of existence, fatalism and responsibility.

There are holes; the options that the dice offer are determined by the thrower, which could result in some very anodyne choices; shall I drink tea, coffee or hot chocolate? The protagonists seem to have an unlimited supply of funds, and the need to earn a living rarely seems to crop up.

These are nitpicking though; it's not important for the main themes of the book.

Read and enjoy, but don't be too anal about it...

For the philosofically inclined. This book is easy to read, extremely funny and gives the reader profound insights into the mystery of personality/ego. If you like this kind of litterature you should read Naive Super by the norwegian author Erlend Loe.

I cannot believe this book had such a high number of positive reviews. I have read some bad books in my life but this one is one of the absolute worst!I am amazed that all the references to CHILD murder and rape can be overlooked by the rest of the reviewers.

This book is fantastic. Philosophical, darkly humorous, and full of adventure, the pages contain more than just a novel but a novel concept that could open up many doors.

Book Description

In a major biography of Blaise Pascal, James Connor explores both the intellectual giant whose theory of probability paved the way for modernity and the devout religious mystic who dared apply probability to faith. A child prodigy, Pascal made essential additions to Descartes's work at age sixteen. By age nineteen, he had invented the world's first mechanical calculator. But despite his immense contributions to modern science and mathematical thinking, it is Pascal's wager with God that set him apart from his peers as a man fully engaged with both religious and scientific pursuits.

One night in 1654, Pascal had a visit from God, a mystical experience that changed his life. Struggling to explain God's existence to others, Pascal dared to apply his mathematical work to religious faith, playing dice with divinity: he argued for the existence of God, basing his position not on rigorous logical principles as did Aquinas or Anselm of Canterbury, but on outcomes—his famous wager. By applying to the existence of God the same rules that governed the existence and position of the universe itself, Pascal sounded the death knell for medieval "certainties" and paved the way for modern thinking.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful little book about physics and faith.......2007-10-05

As an engineer I had studied all about Pascal's products, the conic sections, the vacuum, and the probability studies. However, until I read this book never could have imagined the sad and inspirational story behind the genius, Blaise Pascal. It is written in short readable chapters that give you a vivid picture on the 17th century in which he lived. The book gives a spectacular vision of the beginning of science as we know it in the 21st century. It also examines the conflict of one man between his faith and his passion for science. I won't tell you how it comes out that for you to read. The only thing I will tell you is that it is not the usual science is good and religion is bad that you find in many book today. Read this book, and if you have children interested in science have them read it too, or better read it to them.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting fellow, interesting times, interesting intersection of science and religion........2007-01-16

This fairly short (216 pages) book centers around the central dilemma of Blaise Pascal's, the 17th century math prodigy's, life philosophy: How to reconcile his austere view of life as should be lived by a creation of God with his obvious love of math, science, and worldly ideas. Another hundred pages could have been used to flesh out Pascal's writings and scientific ideas so that the reader could make more of his own decision about him. Instead the author has chosen to present his own thesis for acceptance or rejection. There is considerable interesting background provided on the France of Pascal's time and on Jansenism, the ascetic (Augustinian) form of deterministic (Calvinistic) Catholicism that Pascal ultimately accepted.

There are several descriptions of the discoveries of Pascal and his peers but nothing that requires a math or science background. The last chapter is a musing by the author that uses the probabilistic view of modern life that Pascal originated by his seminal work in probability theory. The author's dividing of people into climbers and sprawlers is insightful especially if you're inunudated with amazing coincidence \ God's providence spam e-mails as I seem to be. Recommended if you're Roman Catholic, definitely recommended if you're a fan of the Jesuits (the author is a former Jesuit). The book reads fast and is divided into short chapters; useful if, as I do, you like to finish a chapter before getting off the mass transit. Well recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Three Scripts and Freundschaft Too!.......2000-05-27

"Three Screen Comedies" is much more than an anthology which takes a few scripts, puts them under one cover, and republishes them. These weren't the shooting scripts but have been altered by Mr. Raphaelson to make them more readable and to reintroduce some bits that were cut from the finished movies. This said, this wouldn't be a bad book if republishing the scripts were all that it did. The screen comedies to which the title refers are: "Trouble in Paradise," "The Shop Around the Corner," and "Heaven Can Wait." In this reviewer's opinion, each screenplay would be a mega-hit in today's movie market.

One, in fact, is. "The Shop Around the Corner," which premiered in 1940 and starred Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart has been remade as "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. What were pen-pals in the original became e-mail "pals" in the update. Like the original, the remake is warm, funny, witty and has a happy ending.

The Warren Beatty movie, "Heaven Can Wait," shares nothing except the title with the original which starred Gene Tierney and Don Ameche. In the author's notes introducing "Heaven Can Wait" in the book under review, Raphaelson felt it necessary to comment that ""The title "Heaven Can Wait" has been used recently on a movie that in no way resembles our original film. I don't know why this was done."" A rather subtle understatement in my opinion.

What makes this book different than the run of the mill anthology are the insightful and informative introduction by Pauline Kael, the then movie critic for "The New Yorker," and the inclusion of Raphaelson's "Freundschaft: How It Was With Lubitsch and Me," which was originally published in "The New Yorker" in May of 1981. Both Kael's introduction and Raphaelson's "Freundschaft" could, among other things, serve as textbook examples of the workings of creative minds joined together in what they do best, creating.

"Freundschaft," arguably Raphaelson's finest piece of writing, was a memorial to Ernst Lubitsch (the incomparable producer/director of many outstanding movies). Raphaelson and Lubitsch worked together for thousands of hours, each feeding off the other's ideas, whims, and comic utterances, in the creation of 9 films spanning two decades, the 30's and 40's. Although Raphaelson was ostensibly the writer, and Lubitsch the director/producer, no such distinction seemed to exist when they collaborated. "Freundschaft," in addition to being a memorial to Lubitsch, is also the story of a collaborative relationship and an ode to a "love/hate/love" intellectual, emotional, creative relationship that is unique in the movie business.

I recommend this book for its screenplays, for Mrs. Kael's introduction and for Mr. Raphaelson's paean to Ernst Lubitsch. You can't go wrong on any of these counts, and having them all in one book is a real treat.

Back Cover description: Could she cope with the Savage family? Louisa didn't want to marry the boring Frank, nor did she want to live with her stepmother. She was fortunate to get, after completing her training, what sounded like a pleasant and challenging nursing job--in Norway! Louisa was delighted, even though her patient, Claudia Savage, did cause some problems--not helped by the austere unco-operative attitude of Claudia's brother Simon. She couldn't understand why he was so disagreeable...

This is the first Betty Neels story I've read where the hero wasn't a doctor and the setting wasn't Holland/Netherlands. The descriptions of Norway were fine. What I didn't like was the plot. The patient is an alcoholic. No one tells Louisa that, not the two doctors, not the brother (until halfway through the book). This is the first book of Ms. Neels where the doctors actually are incompetent. What else could you say it is when the two doctors never say to the nurse what the problem is-they gloss it over with euphemisms. I never warmed up to the hero, there was just something I found unattractive. If that wasn't enough, Claudia has a miracle cure for her drinking-she falls in love. Sorry, I just can't buy this storyline.

I couldn't keep this book. My son lost this book from the library. Looked for this book everywhere and finally found it at Amazon! Thanks Amazon! The book was really inexpensive too!

My four-year-old son loves Waldo, and we've had a lot of fun looking through this book EVERY night since he got it. It's his favorite book. There's so much to look for, more than just Waldo and his stuff -- there's Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw, Woof and all their props, as well as 25 Waldo Watchers scattered throughout the book. From an adult perspective, the postcards aren't as much fun to read out loud, but overall I love sharing the book with my children.

Always a great book - baught the original when my children were young for road trips - I baught this reissue for my 22yr old son to take to Iraq the original was worn out. Had to sneak a peak thou and all five of us spent hours
together like we did so many years ago.

this is the mini version of the book, and though the smallness of it and the magnifyier that comes with it are somewhat of a novelty at first it gets fairly annoying rather quickly. Other then this small complaint i enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Books are virtually the same.......2007-02-15

I read a borrowed copy of Releasing Fat: Developing Healthy lifestyles that Have the Side-Effect of Permanent Weight Loss. It wasn't until after I ordered a copy for myself AND and copy of Healthy for Life... that I read the blurbs about them on Dr. Strand's website. You can't tell on the Amazon site that the books are virtually identical. The only difference is that Releasing Fat includes Usana products (meal replacements, snack bars, and vitamins and minerals) in its meal plans. Healthy for Life just has low-glycemic foods in its meal plans. If you want only one copy, you just need to get one or the other, not both. HOWEVER, I wasn't bothered by having two copies of what amounted to the same book because I've learned so much about insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, killer (abdominal) fat, carb cravings, cellular nutrition, and the benefits of a low-glycemic diet that I wanted to recommend it to all my friends and relatives.
There are a lot of low-gycemic diet books out there now, but this is the only one I've seen that goes into such detail about the specific negative health effects that result from the way most Americans eat and how a change to a low-glycemic diet will counteract those health problems.

4 out of 5 stars Healthy For Life: by Ray Strand.......2006-08-29

I have enjoyed the writing of Ray Strand in the past, and his being the author of this book was partly instrumental in my decision to purchase it. The title seems to imply that the subject matter would cover a variety of concerns and indeed, the first quarter of the book deals with the generalities in lifestyles and health. However, the main thrust of this book appears to be the effect of high glycemic foods on the present, almost epidemic occurence of diabetes in the general population, from children and adolescents to adults. If this is your area of interest, this book is quite thorough and covers a lot of territory regarding the effects of glycemic overload and what can be done about it. I find the author's inclusion of several weeks of sample, remedial menus to be very helpful. This book would be beneficial to everyone given the present state of America's health trends and Dr. Strnd writes clearly and in depth about the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy for LIfe: Developing Healthy Lifestyles that Have the Side-Effect of Permanent Weight Loss.......2006-08-07

Excellent book for all those interested in wellness and/or weight loss. Dr. Strand presents the technical reasons for weight loss in very interesting and understandable language. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in health, wellness, and/or weight loss.
