Book Description
Sixteen years ago Snow Ashley Gable ran away from Chicago and the grief and betrayal she'd experienced there. Now, at thirty-one, she's coming home -- bringing her successful late-night radio talk show, "The Cinderella Hour," to the Windy City.
But there are risks in returning -- risks and fears. The father she never knew. The mother who acted out one dangerous fantasy after another. The high school heiress who uncovered Snow's greatest secret
And then there's Luke Kilcannon, the troubled boy she loved.
Luke has never forgotten Snow or the love they shared -- and the baby it created. He needs to know why Snow abandoned him, why she abandoned the future the two of them had planned.
And Snow needs to find out who doesn't want her back in Chicago.
Customer Reviews:
A good Read.......2005-08-17
This book takes place somewhere other than the East or West Coasts wehre a lot of Katherine Stone books do. I loved this one because although I am familiar with the area I was taken in with the characters. I love Katherine Stone books and this one didn't disapoint me.
strong romantic suspense thriller.......2005-07-27
In Quail Ridge, Illinois, eight year old Snow Ashley Gable meets ten years old Lucas Kilcannon. The two lonely outsiders forge a bond to include e sneaking him food as his father, a local hero as a successful swimming coach fails to feed him. When his father decides to kill him, Lucas jumps out his window to escape the fire his dad lit and died in. However, he lands in the glass and nails that his father placed in the dried out swimming pool. Most people blame Lucas who is considered a bad seed.
In High school he and Snow begin seeing one another. However he leaves for the West Coast to go to college with plans to come back and marry his pregnant beloved Snow. When she miscarries, she tells him good bye and vanishes.
Years later successful Atlanta radio host Snow Gable takes her show The Cinderella Hour to Chicago not knowing that the past that started in Massachusetts before she was born will come back to haunt her. Also Lucas demands to know why she left him. She knows she owes him the truth, but how to make the man she still loves understand that she suffered from post partum depression.
Though at first there seems as if there are too many subplots, all tie brilliantly together inside a strong romantic suspense thriller. The story line is character driven, but not just by the second chance at love between Snow and Lucas. The major ensemble support cast plays critical roles with each having their secondary segment fit into the bigger picture. Katherine Stone writes a complex but winning tale.

Was this book finished???.......2001-10-22
While I thought the story line was good, I have to wonder if the story was finished the way the author invisioned it. The book starts out with two people meeting at a charity ball and then a mysterious gunman kills Jonathan Steele's brother and sister-in-law (not a great loss). From there the story starts to fizzle. We never find out who the killer was. Then the FBI is mentioned like two times, but we never find out why they are involved. I did like the romance between Cynthia and Jonathan, but felt the plot could have been developed more to have more of a side story. I will admit it was an easy read (1 day), but I would have rather had a longer book with more explination and excitement.
A thread in a new mystery series........2000-10-02
Jonathan Steele warned his half-brother David that he must replace embezzled funds or face arrest. David laughs him off, stating that while he and his wife are out of the country, Jonathan will suffer a fatal accident. In short order, a mysterious killer murders David and his wife while Cynthia Morgan drinks poisoned coffee meant for Jonathan. When Cynthia learns Jonathan is now left with custody of his nephew, she offers her company's temporary nanny services. Jonathan agrees, if Cynthia will be the nanny once she is out of the hospital. Jonathan is attracted to Cynthia, but he doesn't believe in love and happily ever after.
A nice tale with an unsolved mystery which will be addressed in another author's book. Jonathan's background clearly explains his reluctance to believe in love. The lack of FBI agents swarming around Jonathan after the murder was unrealistic.

THEY BOTH CAME TOGETHER IN PERFECT HARMONY. FOR THOSE WHO DIDNT CARE FOR THE SERIES..HEY...YOU CANT PLEASE EVERYBODY ALL THE TIME..

Boring..........2007-04-15
I could not read all of this book and that is the reason for the 1 star. The beginning contained scenes with the heroine that seemed unnecessary. The middle lagged on and on and I found more solace in washing dishes. The end confrontation was the best part. Not worth the money, sorry.
Outstanding paranotmal romance thriller.......2007-02-10
The plot here while somewhat traditional is more twisted than the first book. Jackson is seeking out the witch that cursed his family hopping mtha by killing her he can break the curse. He finds a witch, Lucinda, just as she is in labor and in trouble. The plot thickens from there. Nicely done seduction sequences and nice characters and plot development. Resolution is not entirely traditional and over all well done. A little more humr than then the first book but not much. Very good read.
Didn't like this one as much as the first.......2006-12-29
But that's my only criticism. I like this series a lot so far.

One late autumn day in 1982, the fifty-eight-foot yacht TRASHMAN set sail on a routine trip from Annapolis to Florida, with Deborah Scaling and four others aboard. When the boat sailed into a seventy-knot gale, it went down quickly, leaving the crew adrift in the Atlantic in a rubber dinghy that was quickly surrounded by sharks. Five harrowing days and nights later, when a Russian freighter finally came to their rescue, only two crew members remained. Powerful, adrenaline-charged, utterly consuming, UNTAMED SEAS is a brave, unforgettable story that plunges to the depths of the human psyche and surfaces with the strength to survive.

Amazing book.......2007-06-17
A real hero and an inspiration. I would have given up. Courage and class!A great read, you will be gripped!
loved it.......2005-04-23
I read this book in two sittings, some parts I was almost too scared to keep reading. The part where they tip over the boat to rinse out all the crap from Meg's leg (bloody infection stuff) and they can't tip it back and the sharks are surely going to smell all that in the water...I almost died just reading it. After reading this I had some burning questions about a lot of things I went to her website and emailed her. She was sooo nice, answered all my questions.
Don't read this on the beach or even in the tub!
what happened to Meg Lukens Noonan?.......2004-02-18
who co-wrote the first book with Ms. Kiley? Why did Ms Kiley write the story over again when the first one was so good? It is a fascinating, if disturbing, story of survival.
Very Disturbing Story.......2003-10-03
After reading this book, I was both very sad and very angry. If there is a God that is fair, then all 5 should have survived or all 5 died. There were no miracles here. It was survival of the fittest. Mark and John were just plain ole alcoholics, and could not deal with reality, let alone a disaster of this magnitude. Their alcohol soaked brains gave into drinking saltwater - Stupid. Meg was unfortunate to get caught in the rigging, so her wounds were too bad to allow her to survive long. Brad and Debbie were lucky that they were not injured or dependent on drugs or alcohol. Yep, it was plain old "survival of the fittest". No miracles. One thing that bothered me, was that none of the men offerred Meg any clothes. Instead they let her sit there for 4 days in nothing but a shirt. (she was not even wearing any underwear). Insensitive, pathetic and cruel!!! If there is a God that is fair, why didn't He perform a miracle to let Meg survive? She seemed the most innocent of the bunch. The reason I gave this book 5 stars is that it was well writen and detailed of the account, and has made me re-examine my own values. I am going to try to enjoy life to the fullest.
Kevin Daugherty
4 points for courage, -1 points for stupidity.......2003-06-19
This novel is unforgettable and absolutely terrifying.
Deborah is a young and vibrant woman, attracted to the sea and sailing. Trying to make it on her own, she elects to crew with four others on a 58 foot sailboat named the TRASHMAN from Annapolis to Florida. Somewhat experienced in sailing, she begins to recognize that this crew is not capable nor predictable. She overrides her doubts with alcohol and brief reassurances, yet she can not shake the impending doom and fear of those she is sailing with.
It is not easy. The crew argue amongst themselves, and the alcohol flows steadily. Procedures are cast aside, and boasting mates inflate their personal experience on board. Within hours of sail, it is quite obvious that she is sailing with not only incompetent sailors, but ones who are obviously psychologically and chemically impaired. There are crucial warning signs that Deborah notes prior to sail, yet fails to act on. Just as in destructive relationships, the symptoms are there before the disease is diagnosed.
ABORT!!! ESCAPE!!!! SWIM!! You scream to the innocents while reading this account.
But you know people do not behave this way. They wait, and they hope...for semblance of order...for personal responsibility....for someone to save them.
Personally, if I had to choose the method of my death, what happened to these poor people would come in last place.
There are underlying issues for Deborah. She suffered child abuse at the hands of her step father and had a difficult relationship with her mother. Coupled with her own personal demons, she was vulnerable, yet probably better prepared to handle the ultimate challenges before her. Her troubles made her strong and resilient, although later they became her psychological hurdles she had to cross over before she made peace with not only herself but the horror that occurred on sea.

Carpe Jugulum is the 23rd Discworld novel, and with it this durable series continues its juggernaut procession onward. Pratchett is an author who inspires such devotions that his fans will fall on the novel with cries of joy. Nonfans, perhaps, will want to know what all the fuss is about; and that's something difficult to put into a few words. The best thing to do for those completely new to Pratchett is to sample him for themselves, and this novel is as good a place to start as any. But fans have a more precise question. They know that Discworld novels come in one of two varieties: the quite good and the brilliant. So, for instance, where Hogfather and Maskerade were quite good, Feet of Clay and Jingo were brilliant. While true fans wouldn't want to do without the former, they absolutely live for the latter. And with Carpe Jugulum, Pratchett has hit the jackpot again. This novel is one of the brilliant ones.
The plot is a version of an earlier Discworld novel, Lords and Ladies, with the predatory elves of that novel being replaced here by suave and deadly vampires, and the tiny kingdom of Lancre being defended by its witches. But plot is the least of Pratchett's appeal, and Carpe Jugulum is loaded with marvelous characters (not least the witches themselves, about whom we learn a deal more), comic touches and scenes of genius, and even some of the renowned down-to-earth Pratchett wisdom (about the inner ethical conflicts we all face and the wrongness of treating people as things). Pratchett's vampires are elegant Bela Lugosi types, and they come up against an unlikely but engaging alliance of witches; blue-skinned pixies like Rob Roy Smurfs; a doubting priest with a boil on his face; and a magical house-size Phoenix in a seamless, completely absorbing, and feel-good-about-the-universe mixture. Highly recommended. --Adam Roberts, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
It is rare and splendid event when an author is elevated from the underground into the international literary establishment. In the case of England's best-known and best-loved modern satirist, that event has been long overdue.
Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent Discworld novels satirize and celebrate every aspect of life, modern and ancient, sacred and profane. Consistent number-one bestsellers in England, they have garnered him a secure position in the pantheon of humor along with Mark Twain, Douglas Adams, Matt Groening, and Jonathan Swift.
Even so distinguished an author as A. S. Byatt has sung his praises, calling Pratchett's intricate and delightful fictional Discworld "more complicated and satisfying than Oz."
His latest satiric triumph, Carpe Jugulum, involves an exclusive royal snafu that leads to comic mayhem. In a fit of enlightenment democracy and ebullient goodwill, King Verence invites Uberwald's undead, the Magpyrs, into Lancre to celebrate the birth of his daughter. But once ensconced within the castle, these wine-drinking, garlic-eating, sun-loving modern vampires have no intention of leaving. Ever.
Only an uneasy alliance between a nervous young priest and the argumentative local witches can save the country from being taken over by people with a cultivated bloodlust and bad taste in silk waistcoats. For them, there's only one way to fight.
Go for the throat, or as the vampyres themselves say...Carpe Jugulum
Customer Reviews:
New theme (vampires), same old witches.......2007-09-09
I give the book 4 stars (probably 3.75) because of putting the witches through a new theme - vampires invading Lancre! This makes for a refreshing story in the Discworld series to date. However, the witches are still the same characters (of course), so the type of jokes and their behavior is nothing really new.
Overall, another great adventure. I guess you can only do so much with the same characters though.
Some Stakes, But Plenty of Heart.......2007-07-29
I must admit I'm a sucker for the Witches of Lancre stories. I've always felt that Pratchett is at his best when his books are wrapped around a Big Idea and who better than Granny Weatherwax, the mistress of "headology" to tackle those? There are actually two story threads that have some real meat to them. There's the main thurst of the novel surrounding the efforts to rid the Disc of the Magpyre clan, whose charming nastiness makes us take a look at the nature of Evil. But even better is the journey undertaken by Granny Weatherwax and the Omnian priest Mightily Oats. Not just a dangerous journey through the forest of Uberwald to the vampyre's lair, it's a spiritual journey for the doubting Oats that explores faith, religion and the nature of Good. Not only does this potentially cardboard character develop a rich characterization through his trials, but we also get to see a more human face of Mistress Weatherwax.
In true Discworld form, there's plenty of silliness to be found (including the line "Let's kick some bat!"), but it's the depth that can be found within the comic chaos that brings me back to this book time and time again.
A whole different take.......2007-03-08
on Vampires.
But then that's been the hallmark of the Diskworld books from the beginning. Taking things we know and twisting them to be entertaining and amusing.
Well done.
Discworld.......2006-08-27
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
A reviewer has compared him to Geoffrey Chaucer. He reminds me more of Douglas Adams, or perhaps S Morgenstern. Great company, isn't it? He's an extremely skillful and imaginative writer, damn funny, clever and observant to boot. He's also very easy to read. A master of characterization, and if there's anything else you like about reading that I didn't mention here, assume I simply forgot. He's awesome.
Another reviewer mentioned Jonathan Swift and PG Wodehouse. Why such hallowed company? Because Pratchett belongs there! Truly, I'm enjoying my quest to read every book in the series. You should do the same, and begin your quest at the library because he's got to be there. He's awesome!
Yet another reviewer said Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that works too.
Why do we, as reviewers, compare authors to other authors? Because it's easier than thinking. In the case of Terry Pratchett, it's probably because we'd otherwise wind up quoting the guy. He's so unique that we just don't know how else to cope with his greatness. Even this paragraph sounds like foamy drool raving, doesn't it? That's how all readers react to Pratchett. Reviewers simply don't have the good sense to keep it to themselves.
I could call his writing fantasy, but I could likewise call what Douglas Adams wrote science fiction. In both cases, I wouldn't be wrong, but I'd be neglecting so much and just totally missing the point. A rare few authors transcend a genre to such a degree that you know they're shouting out, loud and proud, a big fat "Bite me!"
I love Terry Pratchett's writing, and I completely understand why some folks refer to him as their favorite author. Or favourite, I should say, since we're being British. He's one of those authors that makes you want to grab whoever's in hearing range and start reading passages aloud. I'm simply thrilled that there's such an extremely talented and prolific author who's been working for years without me being aware of him. Now I have much catching up to do, and I will love it.
Witches and Vampires, Igors and Priests.......2006-03-16
With Carpe Jugulum, Terry Pratchett returned to the witches of Lancre series. The witches, including the formidable Esme Weatherwax, must somehow defeat the Vampyres who have taken over the tiny mountain kingdom of Lancre.
The coven has changed, of course. Magrat Garlick has left-off witching to be the Queen - a definite step down in the eyes of Granny Weatherwax. Agnes Nitt has replaced her. Agnes is of two minds about being a witch, but then Agnes is of two minds about everything. Sometimes that can even be an advantage.
The occasion of the story is the christening of the King and Queen's new-born daughter. Reverend Mightily Oates, a very young, very nervous priest of Om, has agreed to perform the service. Oates has crises of faith so often that they might as well be scheduled. Reverend Oates is worried he will mess up the christening. He needn't have worried; of course he does.
And King Verence, in a gesture of excessive good will, has invited everyone to the christening. Including those new and modern Vampyres from neighboring Uberwald. Everyone who knows anything about vampires knows they don't go where they aren't invited, but of course they were invited... And these new, modern Vampyres don't mind garlic, holy relics, wedges of lemon or the other traditional tools for managing the pests. And they are clever. As just one example, Granny's invitation to the christening has gone astray. Somehow, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Agnes Nitt must find a way to force these Vampyres out, not just out of Lancre but out of the DiscWorld entirely.
Pratchett is a man of firm convictions. One of those firm opinions is that the greatest sin of all is to treat people as things. Which is what vampires - and Vampyres - do. So the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Besides, they are up against Granny Weatherwax. Who also gets one of the great lines in vampire literature. I won't spoil it here, but as is always the case with Pratchett, it is a logical and hysterically funny implication of the whole blood-sucking thing. And exceptionally well-developed in the plot.
I was particularly impressed with Pratchett's development of Mightily Oates. He is introduced as a bumbling stock character, but over the course of the story becomes something far more, earning the grudging respect of the entire coven. Someday I'd like to read more about Reverend Oates.
The Witches series isn't my favorite, but among the Witches stories this is one of the best, second only to "Lords and Ladies." You'll never look at magpies in quite the same way. A very good tale, very well told. Highly recommended.

Ultimate Dreaming.......2007-09-27
Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche presents Tibetan dream yoga in full detail, and most importantly, fully contextualizes its practice in the Dzogchen spiritual tradition. As I slowly worked my way through this illuminating book it increasingly dawned on me that this work was not only the clearest practical manual on dream yoga ever penned, but that it ranks as one of the most enlightening spiritual treatises I have ever encountered. The author starts by outlining the conceptual foundations of Dzogchen teachings as related to dream yoga, then presents preliminary practices necessary for developing the "mental muscles" needed for genuine engagement in the rigors of dream and sleep yoga. Then comes the meat of the text, where Tenzin Wangyal elucidates all the elements for the complete practice of these esoteric yogas. He repeatedly stresses that the ultimate aim must be a consistent abiding in clear, non-dual awareness, or "rigpa"--throughout waking, dreaming, sleeping, and ultimately in dying (bardo). As heavy as this sounds, the author actually carries it all out with the light touch of a true master. He gently leads the reader into a realm of wondrous mystery...
Brilliant!!! THE OLDEST SPIRITUAL PRACTICE WILL BE ADOPTED BY WEST Eventually!.......2007-03-09
Very hip writing about PREPARING FOR DEATH... Amazing material being able to see life as a dream and hence waking up in your dreams to transcend death, and the subject of a new Hollywood big budget sci fi film, CONVERGENCE, by a director named Wake.
Simple and beautiful. Achieves what Casteneda makes complicated. But we know this one is real.
great book for anyone.......2007-02-15
This is a really good book about sleep and dreams. The whole book is written really well and informativley. I have experienced 2 lucid dreams before even finishing the book. But more importantly my own knowledge of how dreams can be useful to me has increased greatly. I recommend this book to anyone interested in lucid dreams.
Book by Rinpoche.......2007-01-23
I highly recommend this Book on Dreaming and Sleep. It's very enlightening.
alternative info on lucid dreaming.......2007-01-22
I think this is a really good book to get some alternative info on lucid dreaming. I still prefer Stephen Laberges EWLD, but this one is great in a different way. I'm not into buddhism. And if you don't have any experience with buddhism, then it's not very easy/clear. You'll just have to ignore some of the buddhist slang to get the best out of it. Anyway, it's nice to read about the subject from a different angle.

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful introduction to these powerful practices.......2007-07-24
Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is a gifted communicator as well as lineage holder and Bön Buddhist Master of Dzogchen, Tantra, and the ancient earth practices (shamanism) of Tibet. He is also an accomplished scholar with the ability to make even the most complex and esoteric teachings accessible to western students.
Tibetan Dream Yoga Practices can seem daunting to westerners. In this two CD set (skillfully edited from one of his workshops) Tenzin Rinpoche offers an initial entry into these beautiful practices that can bring benefit to anyone. For Buddhist practitioners, Dream Yoga Practice is essential to understanding the Nature of Mind. For non-Buddhists, these teachings contain practical advice for disengaging from unhealthy emotional attahments that cause suffering for ourselves and those we love.
These CDs are an ideal introduction to the benefits of Dream Yoga practice, especially when used in conjunction with Tenzin Rinpoche's book, Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep (Snow Lion Publications, 1998).
