4 out of 5 stars The Cat Who Went up the Creek.......2007-09-24

Jim Qwilleran is an unintentional sleuth. He credits all of the detective action to his Siamese cat, KoKo. I find this series of books to be light entertainment and quite enjoyable....

One of the Best Cat Who Books Written. I am a real fan of Lillian Jackson Braun. The Cat Who Went Up the Creek will entertain all mystery lovers. An Extra Treat for Cat Lovers that love Mysteries. As usual Quill and Koko are delightful. It is like curling up with an old friend, when you open the book.

4 out of 5 stars A novel that pulls you along to the very end!.......2004-02-14

Lilian Jackson Braun's book, The Cat Who Went Up The Creek, is the 24th book in a 26 book series. Braun provides a mystery that is easy to follow yet entertaining to the reader. This book captures the hearts of cat lovers and mystery fans everywhere. The Cat Who Went Up The Creak involves a columnist for a small town newspaper named Jim Qwilleran. Qwill, as the locals call him, decides to spend two weeks in the historic Nutcracker Inn in order to help the Nutcracker's owner pinpoint just what is causing the "dark cloud" to hang over the Inn. During Qwill's short stay of just two weeks, he meets interesting people and is faced with some extremely suspicious happenings that will keep you guessing.
If you are planning on reading through the entire series, then buying this book may be to your advantage. With so many books in the series, it would be nice to look back and refresh your memory on certain events. I would suggest starting with the first book in the series so you understand exactly what is going on and who the characters are. I'm confident that after reading a few of these fascinating books you will choose your favorite and want to read it over and over again!

2 out of 5 stars Leaves Much to Be Desired.......2006-08-19

Interesting concept, but weak dialog between characters, much of which borders on the absurd, overall lack of depth, real passion and writing skill. For a far better read of a tantalizing scottish hero, read Jackie Ivie's debut "Lady of the Knight".

                    4 out of 5 stars Great writing - Plot struggled a bit.......2006-07-01

I love reading romance and this writer had me turning page after page after page. It's fantastic! Amazing. The time travel initial scene was well-written, the hero was fun, the plot was great. And then there came the snags. I was a bit surprised at the first love scene. The heroine wants out of it? I had a little trouble envisioning any woman who would put her hands in scalding water (this woman isn't insane - what gives?) She'd get major burns! And when Robert the Bruce came on, it felt like the author ran out of plot before the book ran out of pages - and I started skimming. Then came the issue I had with the ending. If an heir had been born...would Ms. Pudding have inherited in the first place? And if Ms. Pudding didn't get in the castle, how could she have gone back in time? If it hadn't been for those minor issues I had - this was solid 5. Solid.

                    5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable!.......2006-03-06

This book was an impulse buy for me, based on the word "Kilt" in the title. I was in a hurry and needed a book to read, and since I love stories set in Scotland, the title "A Man In A Kilt" really caught my eye. Usually I regret impulse buys, especially books by authors I haven't read before, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good this story was! My favorite historical authors are Julie Garwood & Amanda Quick; and my favorite time-travel authors are Karen Marie Moning and Janet Chapman. So if you like these authors you will definitely like Sandy Blair's "A Man In A Kilt". The heroine "Miss Elizabeth Pudding" is a likeable character because though she is not beautiful, her intelligence and generousity of heart make everyone come to love her. The hero is definitely "macho", but with a good heart and more common sense than the average medieval man. I thought that this romance had it all: love, action, danger, and thoroughly likeable characters!

                    3 out of 5 stars Messy.......2005-07-20

This is one of those books that should have been rejected by the publishing house until the author reworked it. It's a good story, and it's decently written, but as others have said, there are inconsistencies and plot devices that are not fully explained--not even enough for a time-travel romance.

I was able to ignore the problems enough to enjoy this book, for the most part. However, there was one startling sentence that I never quite got over: "[The practices of the medieval Catholic Church] only reinforced her loathing for the hocus-pocus of organized religion." There's nothing in her past to have created such a harsh point of view, and it doesn't affect the plot, so the remark is not necessary to either characterization or plot. I really couldn't like the main character, or respect the author, after that little soapbox speech.

                    4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover.......2005-06-29

My sister-in-law has a penchant for books that one can sometimes call "silly". Given the title and the cover of the book, I thankfully accepted my trash bag full of reading material from her and set this one in the "emergency" pile. (Emergency being when one has completely run out of all other books).

Emergencies happen, as they're oft to do, and I ended up spending an afternoon on my sofa wondering why in the world such a good story was titled so poorly? I was hooked from the first and found myself laughing, crying, and biting my nails right along with the spunky heroine.

It wasn't the best book I've read, or even the best-written, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading it, and really, isn't that the point anyway?

In the year 3016, the Second Empire of Man spans hundreds of star systems, thanks to the faster-than-light Alderson Drive. No other intelligent beings have ever been encountered, not until a light sail probe enters a human system carrying a dead alien. The probe is traced to the Mote, an isolated star in a thick dust cloud, and an expedition is dispatched.

In the Mote the humans find an ancient civilization--at least one million years old--that has always been bottled up in their cloistered solar system for lack of a star drive. The Moties are welcoming and kind, yet rather evasive about certain aspects of their society. It seems the Moties have a dark problem, one they've been unable to solve in over a million years.

This is the first collaboration between Niven and Pournelle, two masters of hard science fiction, and it combines Pournelle's interest in the military and sociology with Niven's talent for creating interesting, believable aliens. The novel meticulously examines every aspect of First Contact, from the Moties' biology, society, and art, to the effects of the meeting on humanity's economics, politics, and religions. And all the while suspense builds as we watch the humans struggle toward the truth. --Brooks Peck

                          Book Description

Writing separately, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are responsible for a number of science fiction classics, such as the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Ringworld, Debt of Honor, and The Integral Trees. Together they have written the critically acclaimed bestsellers Inferno, Footfall, and The Legacy of Heorot, among others.

The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre.

Popular demand for this clear-sighted compendium of information about the rebirth of Pagan religions hasn't waned since its initial publication in 1979. Distinguished by the journalism of National Public Radio columnist Margot Adler, Drawing Down the Moon explains this diverse and burgeoning religion's philosophies and activities while dispelling stereotypes that have long been associated with it. Most people don't realize that pagan simply refers to pre-Christian polytheistic nature religions, such as the various Native American creeds, Japanese Shinto, Celtic Druid, and Western European Wicca. Originally, the word pagan meant "country dweller" and was a derogatory term in Rome in the third century A.D., not unlike calling someone a hick today. If you find yourself feeling queasy when you hear the words witch or pagan, a healthy dose of reeducation via Drawing Down the Moon could be the cure. --P. Randall Cohan

                                            Book Description

Now fully revised—the classic study of Neo-Paganism

Almost thirty years since its original publication, Drawing Down the Moon continues to be the only detailed history of the burgeoning but still widely misunderstood Neo-Pagan subculture. Margot Adler attended ritual gatherings and interviewed a diverse, colorful gallery of people across the United States, people who find inspiration in ancient deities, nature, myth, even science fiction. In this new edition featuring an updated resource guide of newsletters, journals, books, groups, and festivals, Margot Adler takes a fascinating and honest look at the religious experiences, beliefs, and lifestyles of modern America's Pagan groups.

Margot Adler's Drawing Down the Moon is still the best coverage of the contemporary Western pagan community in America. With substantial revisions and additions, Adler has surveyed the changes that have occurred since the original publication and its subsequent revision. Always written in a clear, lucid and easily digestible style, this work remains a pleasure to read.

I felt a sense of accomplishment when I finished this book. Yes, some of the material was dated or rather dry, but it is so full of important information that it's one book that every Wiccan should read. These book really explains the diffrent traditions and sects, and gives an honest look at our history. I loved the updated section at the end that listed pagan publications and organizations. This isn't a book for the total newbie, but it can definilty be appreciated from the novice to the high priestess.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone new to Paganism!.......2007-05-23

Adler has updated this book throughout the years to keep up with developments in the American Pagan community. Her latest update was in 2006, so be sure to read the most current as much has changed since it was first published.

Drawing Down the Moon is objective and informative. Adler gives us "the big picture" in this book. She does a great job explaining the differences between the traditions and introduces us to the most influential people involved in this movement. I recommend anyone considering a Pagan path read this book...and the sooner the better since doing so will help one decide which direction to go in.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Examination of a Worldview.......2007-02-12

First let me explain something that might be, or maybe not be, depending on various factors I guess, a surprise. I am a Christian who has had a background in paganism. I was a practitioner of paganism (solitary paganism) for several years before coming to Christ. I come to this book and I recommend this book not because I agree with the theology that is expressed by the Pagan/Wiccan/etc movement, but because I believe that being informed is better than being ignorant. Let me explain. When trying to tell people of my background, I usually find that people tend to jump into Hollywood/Stephen Kingesque views toward witchcraft/paganism/etc. They think of the woman with a wart on her nose living off in the woods. That, or they think of some chap wearing a hockey mask running around chasing teens. When actually Wiccans and Pagans et cetera are lawyers, nurses, teachers, police officers, soldiers, to name a few. These are people with families, with jobs, who pay taxes, who deal with mortgage payments, who have good days and who inevitably have bad days. Thus the reason why I like this book so much, it offers a realistic (at least in my humble opinion) view of who pagans/etc are and what the pagan movement is about. It isn't the best book, simply because when dealing with such an eclectic movement as paganism is, one source is not always "the" source. Still, this book helps people to understand what background I have and, as I express my coming to Christ, what I may agree (still) and what I may disagree with the pagan movement of my background adult years (from around 89-2002 give or take ). Of course I disagree with the main (generalized, again because there's so many various views and expressions of pagan faith) theological output of paganism, nor am I one of those chaps who says "it's all the same," still I have respect for those though I differ in belief with them. For me, when I explain my life, I believe in having a clear and presenting a clear and in-depth understanding of worldviews, in this case paganism. If you wish to have a generalized introduction to the movements within paganism (from Solitary Wicca to Feminist Goddess Worship Paganism) this is the book. Adler has an intrinsic explanation of the movements, of the reasons behind said movements, of what is done, of what ISN'T done (by pagans). Her views are her own views, of course, we all have views, but still Adler goes deep into explaining and examining. Thus when an open-minded Christian who wishes to know the realistic worldview that I had before becoming to Christ, this is the book I strive to point to.
