When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance.

Amazon.com Audio Review

Suze Orman's reading of the audio version of her bestselling book The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is nothing if not intense. Coming at you with the force of a summer hurricane heading for Cape Fear, Orman recounts one horror story after another to help us avoid financial disaster. But, if her insistent, somewhat graceless voice takes some getting used to, it's well worth the adjustment. After awhile, you'll be glad she's doing the talking, blending years of experience as a certified financial planner with credible authority and, more important, a passionate belief in our individual abilities to handle our own finances. There's no question that Suze Orman cares about how we manage our money.

To show her commitment to our financial well-being, Orman packs this abridgment with an unusual combination of practical advice and psychological exercises. During our three hours with her, we receive arguably the best education available on mutual funds, estate planning, income taxes--even life insurance. But we also learn how to "face our fear" of money by exploring our past for the source of the fear. Later, she tells us that giving money to charity actually helps us release this fear. And, in perhaps her most startling step ("trust yourselves more than others"), Orman suggests we follow our inner voice while making investment decisions, a voice she believes comes from God.

Whatever you may thing of that revelation, it's impossible to be put off by Orman's candid, idiosyncratic approach to money management. This is one self-help tape that lives up to the genre. Listeners who stick with Orman till the end will be truly inspired to take money matters into their own hands--and they'll likely get started immediately. (Running time: 10 hours and 43 minutes, two cassettes) --Ann Senechal

3 out of 5 stars This was exactly what I needed; maybe not what you need.......2007-09-26

This book laid out the basics for someone who had to start from square one-half. I had no expectations and was pleased with what I found.

The Good:
1. I have found the idea of looking into your past/emotions about money to be useful.
2. Nowhere else have I found such clear explanations of so much investment lingo. I feel like I will be able to understand Businessweek much better now.

The Bad:
1. I can see how high expectations could lead to disappointment; the claims of psycho-babble are not altogether wrong.
2. I think Suze Orman does not appreciate how good she is with money; most of us should probably not invest by instinct, the way she says we should.

Verdict:
Excellent reference for rock bottom beginner wondering where to go next, but don't believe everything you read.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Security.......2007-09-02

Orman's books do help people create a more financially secure future. Her books are deep and mutifaceted in terms of the approach to financial issues.

4 out of 5 stars Outdated but most things still apply.......2007-07-03

I'm finding out that by reading some of Suze's books, they might be a little outdated. However, the basic principles apply. You need to do something to set yourself free from the financial burden and this is a great book to start with.

5 out of 5 stars I just love Suze Orman.......2007-05-26

My boyfriend had this book on his shelf for years....a guft from his mother. I decided after a few years I was going to read it.
The financial lessons in the book are great! I learned about trusts, wills, etc. Things I would not have thought of, and Suze explains them in a very down to earth, non-intimidating way. She usually blends a true story in.
Because I loved the book so much I started watching the show. Suze is very eccentric and does have some crazy ideas. But, more than a financial planner she is a people person. A very opinionated people person. My boyfriend could not stomach the show because of her eccentric ways- but he came around when I raved about the advice, and things I'd learned.
Suze is just Suze.....so if you've ever seen her show-- she writes like she talks....A no BS kind of gal.
From analyzing the way in which you organize your money in your wallet, to respecting it- you learn the inner reasons why you don't always create wealth for yourself. It may seem far-fetched. However, I am a strong believer that the mind is very powerful. I've done much better financially speaking since I heeded her advice!

4 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-03-12

I was really impressed with this audiobook. It gave tons of useful information, and Suze explains it in a way that anyone could understand. She also gives great "real-world" examples. This is definitely one of very few audiobooks that you can keep and listen to again later to refresh your memory on a topic. Highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Kilts continue to thrill.......2007-03-12

If you enjoy spicy romantic novels, this one is for you. Sandy Blair tells a great story, set in historical accuracy. There are three stories thus far in the "Kilt" series so start at the beginning, "Man in a Kilt", then "Rogue in a Kilt" and most recently "Thief in a Kilt." Don't miss one of the, and lets hope she will continue the series.

4 out of 5 stars Blair masters the historical.......2005-04-14

If you enjoy the historical romance genre and haven't read anything by Sandy Blair, please do so. In A Rogue in a Kilt, Blair has written an inviting, exciting, intriguing and tender love story. It is the story of Sir Angus McDougall and Birdalane.

A hasty bet has Angus McDougall scouring the countryside to find a bride. He must do so within three months in order to claim the prize of a castle. Should he fail in his quest, he will lose six months' salary and be humiliated as well. Of course this strong and bold man has no fear of failure. Yet, after two months of searching, Angus is no closer to finding a bride than when he began. He decides it might be time to step up his search and broaden his criteria.

Birdalane lives alone in the woodland. She has a mystical gift that allows her to heal others, but not without cost to her. A chance meeting with Angus and a careless phrase binds them to each other for a year and a day. Birdalane bravely leaves the only home she has known to follow Angus throughout Scotland. Their travels are filled with danger -- there are gifts that are received and selflessly given, joy and grief -- all before they reach their destination and accept the truth of their hearts.

I wiped a tear or two, laughed more than a little and felt warm and satisfied when the story ended.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you there!.......2005-03-23

This was a book that I read as fast as I could. It takes you back to that place and the characters are alive. Great author! I look forward to more books!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy, Funny & Tender - AWESOME Read!.......2005-01-26

Setting - Scotland, 1410 --- Sir Angus MacDougall wanted desperately to be liege of Donaliegh keep and had accepted the wager of his best friend Duncan to find a willing `lady' bride to be chatelaine of the keep - and he had three months to do this or forfeit six months pay. Well, it seemed easy enough, Angus had never had trouble before bedding the wenches but his nickname of `Angus the Blood' a name he had cultivated, was not helpful in attracting the fair `ladies'. With less than a month left in which to find his bride, Angus came upon a vision emerging naked from a pool and when a wolf came out of the woods towards her he threw his dagger to save her.

Birdalane, a healer, lived alone in the forest glen since she was a child. She had the ability to heal through a remarkable but painful process absorbing injuries and sickness into herself. Seeing her pet wolf wounded she immediately pulled the dagger out and laid her body across him to absorb the injury. By the time Angus arrived at her side, he thought he'd missed the wolf and hit her instead. Knowing he was responsible he raced her from the glen to find help in the nearest village. A mission, which proved to be very strange as most people recognizing Birdalane, and frightened of her powers, slammed the door in his face! With no one to take care of her but himself, plus being in enemy territory, Angus was forced to take her along on his journey, knowing he had little time left to find, woo, and wed a `lady' in order to win his wager. Along their adventurous journey, Angus who had inadvertently hand-fasted with Birdie to save her, discovered that the only female he'd truly like to take as his wife was the accident prone and incredibly infuriating lass at his side.

*** Well, I am happy to say that this second novel proves what I said of Sandy Blair's first novel MAN IN A KILT - "...this is an author one should keep their eye on..." In this, connected novel she has again brilliantly created a most unusual and absolutely wonderful heroine in Birdie. Not only is Birdie lovely, she has unique gifts for healing, as well as being quite myopic - a condition that the author uses to generate both humor and compassion. She crafted Angus' anguish at finding Birdie both so intensely desirable and innocent that he was being driven completely bonkers in attempting to do the right thing by her after mistakenly thinking he'd wounded her. The different adventures they encountered on their journey kept a plethora of emotions going from sadness to pure unadulterated joy. You'll laugh, you'll cry but you will so totally enjoy this author's latest offering that you'll just have to agree with me that this author is definitely on her way to becoming a star in the making in her sexy, funny and tender love stories!

5 out of 5 stars Charming innocence--the Knight meets a Pagan.......2005-01-02

Sir Angus McDougall has one chance--if he can marry a Lady within three months, his Lord will grant him a fief of his own. The only problem is, Angus's reputation goes before him. 'Blood' is known for eating his enemies' livers on the battlefield and few women are prepared to put up with that--expecially the kind of noble woman he needs to win the bet and his property. Things only get worse when he runs across a beautiful woman in the woods--a woman he believes he's accidentally injured when he tries to save her from a wolf.

Birdie 'Shame' is among the last of her kind--a pagan, worshipper of the Goddess, and a Spae/healer, using the Goddess's power to take the injuries of others onto herself. Weakened by saving her friend the wolf, Birdie can't resist when Angus drags her from her safe glade and sets off across Scotland.

Angus doesn't know what he has in Birdie--other than a beautiful woman who just doesn't meet the qualifications he needs for his fiefdom--but others do, and they want her back. A witch/healer is a useful tool for a medieval Scottish lord--especially one who intends to make war on his neighbors. Killing Blood McDougall would just be a bonus.

It doesn't take Birdie long to fall in love with Angus, but that only makes her problems worse. In Medieval Scotland, being a Pagan isn't a choice, it's an execution waiting to happen. Hidden away in her glade, she was safe, but Angus insists on dragging her out in public. Unfortunately, although he claims her as his 'woman,' he remains steadfast on his goal to find a noble woman to wed. Naturally, life doesn't make that easy for him.

Author Sandy Blair combines humor and adventure in an exciting second novel. Birdie is the perfect innocent, brought up by herself, protected from the world but now a woman and ready to experience it. Although Angus has seen the world, he too retains a sort of primative innocence that makes him a perfect match for the feisty Pagan. Blair's wit shines through in the continued confusion and miscommunication between the Knight and the Pagan--I found the scene where Birdie became convinced Angus was merely fattening her up to eat her especially funny.

Fans of Blair's first book, A MAN IN A KILT (see our review) will be happy to see Duncan and Lady Beth again--as they cope with combining modern ideas and industry with the charm of Medieval Scotland.

Book Description

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern—no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve—coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream.
Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

2 out of 5 stars I feel a little bad about reviewing a book I haven't finished.......2007-09-17

However I did buy it and I doubt I'll ever finish it.

Honestly this book is just not very good. It seems to be in the vein of Anne Rice's awful and ridiculous vampire books but set in the historical south.

I was only able to get through a couple chapters. So generic and so dull.

I may edit this review if I ever decide to finish it.

3 out of 5 stars Good....but not the Martin you expect.......2007-06-18

If you love the "Game of Thrones" books (which I do) and want to read more George RR Martin then that's cool. However, this book is not in the same category - in terms of subject, depth, or maturity. It's a good book....just not at the same level. Don't let others who rate it 4 or 5 stars fool you. I enjoyed it...but if it was written by Joe Smith, I wouldn't consider his other books "must reads." I read it about a year ago and was just browsing Amazon and saw that it was added to my recommended list. I was surprised it had such a high rating and figure it was due to a bunch of Martin fans. It was written quite a while ago and just doesn't match the brilliance of his current series.

4 out of 5 stars A different take on the vampire legend.......2007-06-02

I'm not generally much of a fan of vampire fiction, but two things convinced me to give "Fevre Dream" a try. The first is that I greatly enjoy George R. R. Martin's writing. The second is the setting. The majority of the book takes place on a riverboat cruising the Mississippi, which I found rather intriguing for a book about vampires.
Martin throws out many of the traits generally associated with vampires. For example, Martin's vampires have reflections and are not bothered by crosses, garlic, or holy water. They are however, intensely vulnerable to sunlight. They also have amazing powers of self-healing and are incredibly hard to kill.
A battle of wills begins between two extremely powerful vampires, Joshua York and Damon Julian. Joshua despises his kind's need for blood and the horrible acts of violence vampires must commit to survive. He has created a potion containing sheeps' blood which will eliminate a vampire's need for human blood. Joshua forsees a future where humans and vampires can coexist and even become friends; a future where vampires, freed from their need for human blood, will be able to create and contribute to society rather than merely using the creations of humans.
In contrast, Damon Julian revels in being a vampire. He views humans as "cattle" and has no problem whatsoever in using what humans have created to serve his own needs. He feels none of the moral repugnance in taking human lives that Joshua feels. Humans, to him, are nothing more than vastly inferior creatures.
The third main character is Abner Marsh, the riverboat captain. He enters into a business agreement with Joshua without really knowing what he is getting into. Abner is a tremendously appealing chracter who shows great loyalty, bravery, and determination. He also undergoes a great deal of character growth.
I found "Fevre Dream" a bit slow going at first, but once Martin sets up the plot, I was hooked. I recommend this book to Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" readers and to newcomers as well.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Martin.......2007-05-06

A very nicely written book. Those that have read Martin's recent stuff should enjoy. Although the setting is different from Ice and Fire, some elements remain, particularly his humor and penchant for violence and ugly people. Cheers.

4 out of 5 stars A new Twist.......2007-02-25

Vampire books are getting real tired. Martin at least put a new twist on it. It's not a bad historical horror novel. Now finish that darn Fire and Ice story.

3 out of 5 stars From a new fan of Martin.......2006-07-09

I would never have gone out of my way to buy this 80's book from Martin if I hadn't recently read his Song of Ice and Fire.

In Fevre Dream, Martin drops you in the middle of steamboating culture in a pre-civil war USA.. You can tell just from the style of writing, the tendency to write from a character's perspective but from the third person, a few Martin-esque liners ("To be sure" is there maybe once or twice), the way Martin loves his characters in his writing, the way he kills them off without mercy... that this is Martin writing... more than twenty years ago before Ice and Fire.

It's fun to imagine how his writing has progressed since. On the other hand, don't read Fevre Dream thinking it's going to hook you like Song of Ice and Fire. I don't even think Martin likes vampires, and this is a vampire book (haha) ...

Martin tries to alter (like so many others) the vampire myths to freshen up the overused cliche, but in the end it's impossible to escape from those attributes. For a 1 dollar bin book, this is a 2 stars purchase. With a +1 if you are a Martin fan.

                Book Description

The path to freedom is filled with questions and uncertainty. Is it possible to truly know who we are? Do our lives have a purpose, or are we just accidental? What are we meant to contribute? What are we meant to become, to create, and to share? In The Book of Understanding, Osho, one of the most provocative thinkers of our time, challenges us to understand our world and ourselves in a new and radical way. The first step toward understanding, he says, is to question and doubt all that we have been taught to believe.

All our lives we’ve been handed so-called truths by countless others—beliefs we learned to accept without reason. It is only in questioning our beliefs, assumptions, and prejudices that we can begin to uncover our own unique voice and heal the divisions within us and without.

Once we discover our authentic self, we can embrace all aspects of the human experience—from the earthy, pleasure-loving qualities that characterize Zorba the Greek to the watchful, silent qualities of Gautam the Buddha. We can become whole and live with integrity, able to respond with creativity and compassion to the religious, political, and cultural divides that currently plague our society.

In this groundbreaking work, Osho identifies, loosens, and ultimately helps to untie the knots of fear and misunderstanding that restrict us—leaving us free to discover and create our own individual path to freedom.

Doubt—because doubt is not a sin, it is the sign of your intelligence.

You are not responsible to any nation, to any church, to any God. You are responsible only for one thing, and that is self-knowledge. And the miracle is, if you can fulfill this responsibility, you will be able to fulfill many other responsibilities without any effort. The moment you come to your own being, a revolution happens in your vision. Your whole outlook about life goes through a radical change. You start feeling new responsibilities—not as something to be done, not as duty to be fulfilled, but as a joy to do. —OSHO

5 out of 5 stars Like no other - Extraordinary.......2006-12-19

New perspectives and thoughts like none I have seen before. OSHO provides the possibility of a new and intriguing path to a place beyond mundane spiritual teachings. While exposing the path he keeps both feet firmly planted on the ground. His teachings are not based on wishful illusions but on the real here and now.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment and Spiritual Development .......2006-07-29

Osho has a way with words in his Book of Understanding but the power of his words lies in the readers ability to think open mindedly and accept his unique approach in helping the reader find clarity of mind. Although the book may come across to some as a continuous bashing on religion, the worth of his knowledge lies in a person being able to see things from a distance rather than so close that the lines are blurred and the obvious easy overlooked. This book is a must read for anyone able to open their mind to new ways of radical thinking in an attempt to understand ourselves in a clearer and more defined way.

5 out of 5 stars Start with the Body.......2006-05-26

I highly recommend The Book of Understanding. It changed the way I meditate. In the Afterwords, the following quote was quite unique in suggesting that in meditation, I begin with the body:

"That's why my effort here is to start every meditation with the body. That is something new.
In the ancient days people tried to start meditation directly in your innermost core. That is a difficult process. You don't know anything about your inner center; how can you start your journey from somewhere where you have never been? You can start your journey only from where you already are. You are in the body, hence my emphasis is on dancing, singing, breathing - so you can start from the body. When the body starts becoming meditative....
And don't be puzzled by my use of the word meditative for the body. Yes, the body becomes meditative. When it is in a deep dance, when it is functioning perfectly, undividedly, as a whole, it has a meditative quality about it, a certain grace, a beauty."

I liked this suggestion. To find out more, I went to [...] and saw a video clip of a meditation, Kundalini, which uses dance before doing a seated meditation. I found that being active before sitting in meditation helped me to be less restless when I did the sitting phase. There is even a free download of the meditation music. I found this meditation more suited to me than zazen or vipassana.

                4 out of 5 stars miss understanding.......2006-03-14

i do not have an active social life...and i am not an intellectual...atleast i never wrote a book review before for amazon.com...but i find it facinating that two ex girl friends who gave me my walking papers in the last 6 months gave me a book by Osho as a going away present.
the first book i got as a going away present, i simply left unopened at a starbucks as i was upset by the breakup...the second girl gave me The Book of Understanding...i can't say whether i read this meditation book cover to cover like a suspence novel because i was spooked that two different e x-friends gave me a book by the same unknown to me author, or because i truly loved the second girl and respect her mind so much.
anyway i wish i read this book before i ever dated either one of these gals...this Osho is a master relationship counsellor. i was especially touched when he aked is it worth puttin energy into improving my personality...i said to myself 'hell yes'...he replied 'heaven no'...he actually said "the personality has to be dropped so that your individuality can be discovered."
i won't be leaving this book at starbucks...and i'm taking her home with me the next time...no more misunderstandings for me.

5 out of 5 stars Changing the World by Changing Ourselves.......2006-02-22

If I could recommend only one book to everybody who senses that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, it would be this one. The author clearly identifies the crossroads where we're standing these days, as the belief systems of our primitive past bump up against the future and its demands for a more generous, aware, and evolved species of human being. Wouldn't it be great if everybody woke up tomorrow morning with the understanding that all we've got is this one, beautiful planet, and it's up to us - not some government, pope, God or extraterrestrial delegation - to figure out how to live on it harmoniously? This book is for those who wonder if and how that much-needed awakening might happen.
