Over the top!.......2007-09-16
This book features Amelia, who is married to Cary, a man 20 years younger than she. Amelia is concerned that she will lose Cary to a younger woman, a theme which has already been explored in "Texas Heat" the book which precedes this one in the series. It also deals with the decisions of Cole and Riley as to what they plan to do with their lives. Cole seems to have had a personality change since the last book, and has changed from a selfish, self-centered young man into someone of substance. No explanation is given for this transformation. Also his relationship with his cousin Riley seems to go from the extemes of animosity to a brotherly closeness with blinding and unrealistic suddeness. There are a couple of very dramatic, life-and-death situations and the actual death of two family members. Of course there is romance thrown in, but in this book it seems contrived and not as interesting as in the previous books. Hopefully, the last book of the series will return to the formula which made the earlier books successful--interesting characters which the reader can care about interacting with others against a glittering background of wealth and power.
Fern Michaels is Texas IGNUNT.......2003-10-25
Fern, Fern, your first book in the series, Texas Rich, was captivating. Texas Heat a little less so. Texas Fury ended with a tornado, but the myriad events in this novel seemed to swirl for the duration! And then.....here's the REALLY IGNUNT part......Fern seems to have no concept of central Texas. For the location she is describing (just west of Austin), she has the terrain incorrect, the foliage incorrect, and most of all the WEATHER incorrect. At one point a character notes snow clouds in the sky, and the text reads: Snow. More snow. What region of the country did she think she was writing about? Minnesota? Snow is such a rarity, especially in this area of Texas. Ice storms do occur every few years. Not snow. Not six inches. Not more snow. And then we get to the INEXCUSABLY IGNUNT part......Fern refers to a TWO HOUR TIME DIFFERENCE between Texas (CST) and New York (EST). Huh? I'm sorry, Fern, this book was ignunt.
I can't wait to read the last book.......2000-07-17
I just finished Texas Fury and can't wait to start Texas Sunrise. I feel as if I know these people. Wonderful summer reading.
The never ending saga -- that should have........2000-06-25
I read the first book, Texas Rich, a few years ago and found it all right -- typical soap opera saga in a book but decently written and very well researched. When I saw the second book, Texas Heat, about six or eight months after reading the first in a "Free Books" pile, I read that and found it to be much the same, except a bit more plodding and a lot wordier than it needed to be. By the time someone gave me the third, I was ready to die of boredom. The first book wasn't bad as far as romances go, but it should have ended there. I understand Fern Michaels mercifully cut us off at the fourth. I just wish she had the wisdom to cut us off at the first.
A stunning conclusion -- or is it?.......1999-12-29
More adventure, love and intrigue for the Coleman family as Michaels' series seems to jump into high gear. Though none of the TEXAS novels could ever be called dull, in TEXAS FURY, it seems as though if the story isn't racing along (from locales in the Pacific Rim, to a forbidding snow-covered mountain in Europe and back to the home base of Texas), Michaels won't get her point across. Though she contradicted herself with the publication of TEXAS SUNRISE a few years later, FURY was to be the culmination of the Coleman saga, so I can excuse her for wanting to make sure she tied everything up in a neat package. And neat it is -- there seem to be happy endings aplenty within TEXAS FURY. Some may surprise you, some may seem to be a given but all in all -- even with the shock ending -- it ends on a very hopeful note. One comment, though: I rated this book five stars, but it receives such an accolade by the skin of its teeth. The family tree in the front of the book is helpful but there are some misspellings and the time is skewed as well -- just what year is this taking place? Though as I write this it's nearly 2000 now, when the TEXAS series was published (around 1994/1995), the dates of various events in the Colemans' lives seemed years ahead -- perhaps even around the turn of the century! A little confusing, to say the least, but it's a minor nitpick in an overall excellent family saga.
Book Description
Texas Rich: This is the captivating story of four generations of Colemans. There's Moss, living in his father's shadow; Jessica, the doomed mother; Moss and Billie's children, trying to live up to insurmountable expectations; and the grandchildren, heirs to a tarnished empire. Most of all this is the triumphant story of Billie Ames Coleman, who holds them all together.
Texas Heat: The magnificent Austin empire now belongs to Moss and Billie's daughter Maggie. She has invited the whole family to a Fourth of July barbecue in celebration of a renewed sense of family pride. But as loved ones gather, they bring along old resentments and new temptations destined to generate more than a little heat.
Texas Fury: For Amelia Coleman Assante, the last surviving child of a legendary tycoon, it is a time of transition. As her family's kingdom faces new challenges on the horizon, she starts a fateful journey that recalls a troubled past controlled by a father's iron will.
Texas Sunrise: Billie Coleman Kingsley, beloved matriarch of the clan, is dying. As her family gathers together, the indomitable Billie offers new hope to heal the rifts that separate them. Even as her own strength fails, Billie instills courage, fortitude, and her conviction that life goes on after tragedy.

Unique and little known aspect of WWII.......2004-03-12
This is a fascinating account of a little known aspect of world war II - tracking and predicting the weather that could make or break a military campaign in Europe, and the daily life of the men who spent a portion of the war in an isolated outpost in Greenland where some of those predictions were made. The author paints wonderful images of his time spent as part of this eclectic group of soldiers, each picked for a special skill that was needed for the group as a whole to live, work, and survive in the Greenland environment for over a year. Photographs also complement the descriptions. My only minor "complaint" about the book is that sometimes the author got a little too descriptive on the science of geology and weather, and from reading a book for it's historical perspective, wading through scientific detail detracted from the portion of the account I was most interested in.

With her storytelling abilities in full force, Nora Roberts goes Hollywood in this contemporary romantic suspense. Ever since Julia Summers became a single mother at 18, she's focused all her energies on creating a secure home for her 10-year-old son, Brandon, and establishing herself as a sought-after biographer of Hollywood stars. Now quintessential movie goddess Eve Benedict, whose 50-year career has included two Oscars, four husbands, and scores of lovers, has particularly sought out Julia to write Eve's ultimate tell-all book. But as Eve reveals to Julia her many long-held secrets, Julia realizes there's a whole cast of characters with good reasons to keep Eve silent, including Eve's well-loved stepson, Paul Winthrop, a handsome novelist whose desire for Julia is beginning to penetrate her wary reserve. Eve, still glamorous, desirable, and reckless, thinks she's set the stage for events she can direct, but more and more, it's clear that someone dangerous is out of control. Fast paced, with a good balance between suspense and romance, and with more heart than many Hollywood-set novels. --Ellen Edwards
Book Description
A book to die for...
Eve Benedict is the last of the movie goddesses, a smoky-voiced sex symbol with two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers to her name. There is no secret, no scandal she doesn't know. Now Eve has decided to write her memoirs--no holds barred. All Hollywood begs her not to. But Eve has her reasons....
Julia Summers is the biographer Eve has handpicked to tell her story. Transported from her quiet life in Connecticut to glitzy Beverly Hills, Julia hates the limelight but loves her work--and the home it built for the ten-year-old son she's raising alone. How can she refuse this chance of a lifetime?
But Eve's elegantly sexy stepson, Paul Winthrop, will challenge Eve's determination to tell her story--and Julia's resolve to guard her heart. And as Julia learns just how far Eve's enemies will go to keep her book from publication, she also discovers that Eve has one last, dark secret to share. It is one that will change Julia's life--and could cut it brutally short.
Customer Reviews:
Genuine Lies by Nora Roberts.......2007-05-18
I really like this book because it is set in hollywood. Nora Roberts is one of my favorite writers. I have already read most of her books. I used to like Danielle Steel, but Nora is my favorite now.
Blah.......2006-11-14
This is so far one of the most boring Nora Roberts books, ever. It was OK but it seriously was a PUSH to get through it, and usually I simply just fly through her novels. The characters are very flat and uninvolved. I was able to guess whodunit way before the act was even done, as well as guess some of the plot twists. The book was fun for the trip to Hollywood-land but besides that it was a LONG book (528 pages) that really would have been better off slimmed down. Lots ado about nothing which leads to boring repeat events and pointless happenings that in the end you discover served no purpose at all to the story.
If you are a NR fan, you may like it but I suggest perhaps finding another novel to read first and borrow this one from a friend.
Grade of a B on This One!.......2005-05-11
When a famous actress, Eve Benedict, is approaching her golden senior years and decides to write her memoirs, what could possibly go wrong? If Nora Roberts is the author, then the answer is always "PLENTY"! Eve hand picks a young female biographer to help write the book and unwittingly endangers all of the people involved.
GENUINE LIES touches on the Hollywood lifestyle, the glitzy lifestyle of Beverly Hills, what some people will do to keep secrets unknown, betrayal and of course romance.
This was one of the first times Nora Roberts crossed the genre line from romance to mystery and does a very decent job of it. She excels in this quest in her later more recent books, but this one could be given a grade of B.
As with most of her novels, Roberts throws in the unexpected and leaves the readers wanting more when they've finished reading the last page of GENUINE LIES!
Genuine Lies.......2004-10-11
Okay, I read this book over like ages ago then suddenly I thought of writing a review for it.
Julia Summers (I don't know what's with this name that authors like) is an author who was hired to write the biography of Eve. And Eve is a star who has a past to tell, secrets to exposs, and love tales to cherish. And through the story people began to plot against Eve and Julia's book. But that's not it, even with all these lies to tell, Eve has one last lie to tell that would change Julia's life forever.
Okay, the book was shallow. I'm telling you right now, characters are shallow in this book. If it wasn't for the last 200-150 pages I would of threw it away. And trust me the first chapter was unbarable! I wanted to just skip it but when I did I was lost. And also...this book could have been SO much shorter, if it was it would have been sooo much more fun to read. This is what you call a good, 'sit-in-a-lounge-with-a-cup-of-wine' book. One that would just keep you busy.
Through the whole book, I didn't want to RP, I didn't get into ANY of the character. Julia's son was very important through the first two chapters then he was suddenly forgetten as if he never existed!
So I give this a 3 star...perhaps 3 and 1/2 but it would not reach 4. How would you like to read a story filled with shallow and heartless characters?
This is a spoiler! The only part that was good is when Eve was killed and Julia and the hero was watching the video of her and the heritance...trust me that's the only good part. Nothing else is good. Nothing else is emotional. That's the only part out of a 500 some pages book that got me shedding tears. That's bad. Usually with a book that length I cry like a waterfall if it's good. >_>
Entertaining from Beginning to End.......2004-06-16
This novel is like a soap opera, but only more fun, more interesting, and more suspenseful. I was dubious in the beginning about this novel because I usually don't like plots with flashbacks, especially when it isn't between the couple falling in love, Julia and Paul, in this case. But this book is a definite exception, most importantly because I love the characters. There were a lot of characters but you get so enraptured in the novel that you actually do end up knowing all the twenty characters or so. Heck, Eve's husbands and lovers probably made up most of it. Despite the many characters, each character was fully developed and had a personality which was great. Also, ever have a person try to describe a soap opera to you with all the love triangles, murder, and revenge? This novel is kinda like that.
This book twists your emotions all around. A reader becomes sad, angry, understanding, and amused, sometimes all at the same time. I was laughing continuously throughout the book, especially when Eve meets Paul for the first time. I was tearing up with a couple of Eve's stories, especially of Charlie Gray's unrequited love of her and his action because of that. Yes, I am being deliberately vague to avoid giving away that story, although there are so many great stories I doubt you'd care. There were also some parts that were supposed to be sad but because of Nora Roberts's witty descriptions, I ended up laughing out loud despite everything. The novel has many plots all intertwining and then tying up into an unpredictable ending. Guessing the killer was a real mystery to me since everytime I thought I had it figured it out, I changed the killer to a different person.
Now about the characters that I loved so much: Some people might think Eve coldhearted but she did care. She was a strong woman that knew everyone's secrets. Eve had a hard life and it was amazing to me how she could keep moving through all the trials that were heaped unto her. Paul and Julia made a great couple, distrustful of each other at first and then coming to love each other. Julia I really liked because she is a heroine, she protects her son in many ways even to the point of knocking a teacher out. :)
There were some dark characters and some dark stories. If you hate books with rape, suicide, infidelity, people sleeping around, murder, and all that--this book might not be for you. Because like I said, it is kind of like a soap opera. But it is a great enough book to see if you would like it or not. Believe me, just buy it.

Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This takes place in the same universe as Revelation Space, and it turns out to be related. Two political factions, the Demarchists, and the Conjoiners have been fighting a war, and the mind-sharing Conjoiners are winning. Then something scares them, badly.
The action here is wide-scale again, after the one man story of Chasm City.
Clavain, the reluctant Conjoiner, and Skade, one of the new breed, must try and find some amazing super weapons to give them a chane against the entities know as the Wolves that they have discovered.
The Wolves have a job, to exterminate sentient species, and they are very good at it.
This is where some information from Dan Sylveste and his new form, and the ties to Revelation Space come in.
The Ultras from Nostalgia From Infinity also have interests in these weapons.
All characters involved have to decide what to do about the planet Resurgam, which will be the first to face the destructive power of the Wolves.
A story that is not finished until the next book.
awe-inducing origami-like plot and tech.......2007-08-23
This is a fabulous follow-up to the Revelation Space series... after only have read the Revelation Space book. The relavence and depth of plot concerning Relevation Space continued through Redemption Ark. The deep plot had more folds than origami, which left me in submissive pleasure in the shadow of the awe-inducing greatness of it all.
High points for characters, plot (of course) and especially tech talk. There seemed to be more tech talk here than in Revelation Space. The plausible-factor of the series soared to a new high. Humans discovering technology beyond them and using that alien technology drew me in again and again.
However, I wouldn't describe Redemption Ark as "gothic" but perhaps a bit gritty... or a non-lateral mental approach to a perfect future. This future is far from utopic, but it's defininetly not "gothic."
Worthy 3rd Book in 4-Book Series.......2007-06-29
Mr. Reynolds has done quite a good job with this book: the backdrop of the Conjoiners, the history glimpses between the Earth of today and 500 years of the "future" plus a very realistic portrayal of space combat.
The last 150 pages really flies, full of action and resolution.
What I particularly enjoyed was how this book actually could stand on its own in many ways, and was not the typical "bridge" between an exciting first third of a story and the thrilling conclusion. Very well done and highly recommended.
Great job, Mr. Reynolds!.......2007-05-12
I read a lot of books from the science fiction genre, but now I have come on this book, which may be my favorite so far. I have read Pohl Anderson predominately, and while he has some really good books, this one was so fantastic that I really felt like I was getting into the character's heads. The story kept me in suspense and it was hard to put down. Now I am starting to read more Alastair Reynolds books!
Will this guy move to Sri Lanka?.......2007-02-21
A few years ago, I read "Revelation Space", a fine novel, rather interesting, except for the fact that it was wholly forgetable and I wholly forgot it as soon as I finished it. Then, I pick up "Redemption Ark", which is the "sequel" to "Revelation Space" and I had to force myself to remember its predecessor. I guess I should pay better attention when I read Sci-Fi novels as you'll never know when you have to rmemeber the intricate details of an author's universe.
Like "Revelation Space", "Redemption Ark" is set in a confusing, seemingly underpopulated human area of space where people live with no visible means of support, food or manufacturing. All those minor details aside, however, the book is an exercise in theoretical physics and the author strictly adheres to the relativistic qualities of space travel. Almost to the detriment of the novel itself. The book really does remind the reader of Arthur C. Clarke, and I imagine that Clarke was a huge influence in Reynold's life. Not a bad role model. Like Clarke, Reynolds takes into account all aspects of space travel, from gravity, inertia, energy consumption, things like that. Also like Clarke, his characters are a bit flat, not very interesting and the dialogue can get a bit unbelievable.
This book definitely had some good points and bad points. The best part of this novel as a space battle/chase scene held at relativistic speeds which was one of the most original space battles I've ever read. The bad points, however, outnumber the good ones. My biggest complaint about this book is that it didn't really get interesting until page 200 or so and it's WAY TOO LONG as it is. You can tell where the book was edited as key parts of it seem to have chopped out and you're left with a short explanation as to what happened. The next book in this series, "Absolution Gap" is also very long, weighing in at over 700 pages, so I expect the same there. I'll read "Absolution Gap", if for no other reason then I would like to see if the series gets better, but I promise you I won't finish it if it takes more then 200 pages to get going. Especially since this book sort of ends in the middle.

New in Paperback!
Learn about the rituals of this fascinating society.
This book takes readers beyond The Hiram Key to reveal the secrets of the actual Masonic rituals. By deconstructing these rituals, Lomas discovers the true message behind them - a message that is as valid today as it was when the rituals were created. Not only will readers get a step-by-step, insider's look at each of these timeless rituals, they'll learn how they can benefit from them in today-s world.
Turning the Hiram Key also explores how these rituals have helped history's most accomplished men to reach their goals - from Louis Armstrong and Charles Lindbergh to George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt to John Wayne and Buzz Aldrin.
Customer Reviews:
History of Freemasonry.......2006-10-29
This is another in Dr Lomas' continuing history of freemasonry. Having read the others in the series, this one drags a little after you get through the rituals. At some points it is hard to follow what the point is! However, there is still much to glean from his books and re-examining the history of that wonderful society descended from Hiram Abif.
Joseph S. Campbell
Light.......2006-09-06
Congratulations to Brother Lomas for having the strength of his convictions to publish such a personal understanding of our Craft. Having sat for many years asking many questions to many Brethren, being met with the same blank expressions, this work now resonates an understanding and should be enjoyed by both masons and non-masons. For too long our prescious science has stagnated through the imposition of inner secrecy to such a degree of apathy that we are in danger of loosing our reason to exist.
I only wish that i could of heard other Brethrens true insights into our system of spiritual improvement before and after joining.
Better (and worse) than I expected.......2006-09-02
This book is divided into 3 sections:
1. The author's personal experiences in becomming a Freemason,
2. Philosophical and scientific conjecture on life the universe and everything, and
3. A combination of the first two sections + conclusions.
For me, the first section was worth the purchase of the book. It is a step by step journal of Robert Lomas going from non-Mason to Master Mason - his thoughts, initiation procedures and related experiences. It made the whole subject of Freemasonry feel "real" without the reader needing to commit to joining anything. This section received 5 stars.
The second section had me scratching my head and falling asleep in boredom. Philosophy and human behaviour related to scientific conjecture is for me just a platform for someone to voice their thoughts and beliefs. Sure, Lomas is completely entitled to this, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it.
The last section was a bit of a mix and I was glad to see the last page.
Everyone who reads this book will like (and/or hate) different aspects of it as I did, although maybe for different reasons or even the different sections.
Overall, the positives for me made the book worth it.
The book to skip.......2006-04-05
After reading the Hiram Key, I was all to excited to run on down to a local store and buy this book. It is informative to a point, but the author has gone so deep into his own exhaustive personal experience that I found it almost unreadable.
Great author but this book is one to skip unless you prefer absolute tedium.
Huram Abi or not Huram Abi (Hiram Abiff???) That is the Question... is it Nobler.............2006-02-05
Mr. Lomas & company takes another crack at the Hiram Matrix, among the trilogy of Hiram books he has written [The Hiram Key] and [The Book of Hiram]being the other two, this one is not as good as "The Book of Hiram" however it is much better than the "Hiram Key". I guess it comes down to opinion and conjecture with a dash of conspiracy, at best. Maybe Mr. Lomas and company would like to tackle another aspect of Freemasonry, perhaps with better results. Two recommendations on the subject would be "African Origins of Freemasonry" (2005) by Zachary Gremillion and "The Huevolution of Sacred Muur Science Past and Present" (2005) by Noble Timothy Myers-El
