My summer vacation in Thursday Next novels.......2007-10-01
While completing undergrad and law school, I had no time to read for fun. In the period between graduation and taking the Bar, I needed brain candy that was substantial enough to chew on, yet satisfingly low on nutritional value. The Next novels were the perfect solution for my summer vacation! Be sure to bring your towel when you read this, bookjumping is almost as challenging as hitching a flight to Zenobia.
Amusing Book -- Great Literary/British Humor.......2007-07-08
Unlike just about everyone else -- I actually read this book *without* reading the other ones in the series.
Even with that I give this book 5 stars.
Now it doesn't rise to the level of Douglas Adams knock down drag out farce, but it clearly has elements of the dryer wit of writers like Adams or Robert Aspirin (of the Myth-- series).
In short (though the other reviews do a better plot synopsis) Fforde's universe it set in a world, where not only time is fluid (as the Chronoguard can jump back and forth and "fix" history) but also the boundry between fact and fiction -- as characters can jump from the fictional world into the real world, as well as between books.
Fforde's world is one where items tend to be subltly different than reality -- likely because of all that mucking about in history that has gone on and the world is bureaucratic to the point of lunacy.
Also a 2 year old that only speaks "Loren Ipsum" is a wonderful touch.
Great for anyone who likes British humor or literary humor. The story is less important than the world that is spun along the way.
Whimsical but also most real.......2007-04-17
In `Something Rotten' Jasper Fforde's heroine Thursday Next juggles many responsibilities just like any modern day woman: Finding if not permanent then at least reliable childcare, dealing with a husband who's in and out of her life at the spur of the moment, working two jobs, battling a multinational corporation on their quest for world domination, and last but not least providing a life line for Hamlet (yes, THE Hamlet) not to mention competing in the World Croquet League Finals, crossing the border between life and death repeatedly and saving Danish books.
All's well that ends well and even though at times it seems too much even for Thursday all turns out well in the end. Well, well enough. ;)
New readers: Don't make `Something Rotten' your first book of the Thursday Next series. In my opinion, you may start with any of the previous books (The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots) but this one won't be half as much fun as it can be unless you have some knowledge of previous events.
Fellow fans of Thursday: I loved the Hamlet thread!! So much so that I want to read Hamlet, lol. I was deeply touched by what happened after the World Croquet League Finals and Thursday's last meeting with Granny Next. And most amazing to me I was deeply sympathetic to Landen for the first time since meeting him in The Eyre Affair. And I still want my own Dodo.
I can't imagine what's next but then if I could it would be me writing the next book, wouldn't it...
Best Next Yet.......2007-03-19
It's hard to describe Thursday Next for people not familiar with her series. She lives in a world where time is not nailed down and fictional characters aren't either. She is a high level LiteraTec, a government Special Operative who handles literary crimes...not just the mundane sort, like forgery, but the more esoteric ones: like plot kidnapping. These surreal mysteries are laugh-out-loud funny, but also warm and engaging. You'd better read them in order. If you haven't, go back and start with the _Eyre Affair_.
This one, I think, is the best yet. I haven't seen _Hamlet_ so successfully manhandled since Tom Stoppard's _Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead_. Not that Fforde is a Stoppard. There's no high moral message here. He's more Terry Pratchett, in my opinion--tongue firmly in cheek, but with a genuine love of his genre, he succeeds in creating a burlesque that you can't help taking seriously. This had me laughing one minute, tearing up the next. Delightful.
If there is one serious flaw in this novel, for me, it is that sometimes the many threads Fforde is handling seem overwhelming. He may succeed in weaving them all together by the end, but there are points in the novel where it all looks hopelessly tangled. This barely dims the pleasure, though, of watching the author at work, and in the end every strand falls into place.
Fabulous Fourth!.......2007-03-07
After 2 1/2 years, Thursday decides to go back to the real world. There is a fictional character running around in Swindon bound to become England's dictator. Thursday is back to work....after she apologizes for her long unexcused absence. After all is settled, everything falls into place in what I hope is not the final installment of the Thursday Next series. After all, her son Friday could be involved in something.
Product Description
Thursday Next - a time-traveling and fiction-jumping detective is back! After spending her time chasing a stray Minotaur, filling in for Joan of Arc, and raising her infant son, Friday, Thursday needs a break in the real world. But her return to Swindon is far from relaxing. Yorrick Kaine and the evil Goliath Corporation are out to rule the world, and a deadly assassin called the Windowmaker is tracking Thursday's every move.

Jamaica Inn is a true classic. After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan travels to Jamaica Inn on the wild British moors to live with her Aunt Patience. The coachman warns her of the strange happenings there, but Mary is committed to remain at Jamaica Inn. Suddenly, her life is in the hands of strangers: her uncle, Joss Merlyn, whose crude ways repel her; Aunt Patience, who seems mentally unstable and perpetually frightened; and the enigmatic Francis Davey. But most importantly, Mary meets Jem Merlyn, Joss's younger brother, whose kisses make her heart race. Caught up in the danger at this inn of evil repute, Mary must survive murder, mystery, storms, and smugglers before she can build a life with Jem.
Book Description
The coachman tried to warn her away from the ruined, forbidding place on the rainswept Cornish coast. But young Mary Yellan chose instead to honor her mother's dying request that she join her frightened Aunt Patience and huge, hulking Uncle Joss Merlyn at Jamaica Inn. From her first glimpse on that raw November eve, she could sense the inn's dark power. But never did Mary dream that she would become hopelessly ensnared in the vile, villainous schemes being hatched within its crumbling walls -- or that a handsome, mysterious stranger would so incite her passions ... tempting her to love a man whom she dares not trust.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier is an adventure an I suppose something of a Gothic romance, in that the adventure is about a woman who goes to live with very disturbing relatives, and a lot of nastiness goes in.
There is, of course, a bloke around who is not a nogoodnik for the heroine to lean on.
Literary Merit.......2007-06-07
Jamaica Inn is an amazing book which captivates readers with amazing literary merit. Daphne Du Maurier chooses her words carefully, and it is apparent in her writing of Jamaica Inn. Through her descriptions and personification of the English land to the careful sketch of Aunt Patience, her use of language is complete and gives a tone of mystery to the novel. "Sometimes the hills were purple, inkstained, and mottled, and then a feeble ray of sun would come from a wisp of cloud, and one hill would be golden brown while his neighbor still languished in the dark."(26). In this quotation, Du Maurier illustrates the intense, dark, yet forbearing terrain of the moors of England near the dreaded Jamaica Inn. Seeping as it seems, the overtone is dark and mysterious. As with the landscapes, Du Maurier takes careful time drawing up the characters of the book, "This was the old Aunt Patience, with nervous hands and twitching mouth, which glanced over her shoulder as she talked. It was pitiable to see her, and Mary caught something of her agitation" (100). Such attention is paid to the crucial points of character through the simple yet foreboding descriptions. Her tone throughout the book is clear, and sets a stage for the overall plot and ending. A certain amount of mystery is played in every page and keeps the reader enthralled. "But this sudden coming to grace, this quick and exquisite moving of his hands, was a swift and rather sinister revelation, sinister because it was unexpected and not true to type"(17). This message and tone of mystery, deceit keeps the reader on their toes and is magnified in each sentence that flows on each page. Jamaica Inn is a truly captivating novel and is one to read over and over again.
Perfect Example of Suspense.......2007-05-07
I read this book because someone told me at one of my book signings that Jamaica Inn was the most frightening book she ever read. After reading for several hours right before bed, I awakened terrified, in a cold sweat. Since then, I have studied Du Maurier's style and it is masterful. She has the ability to make the main character feel so real, you imagine you are walking in her shoes. Long after putting the book down, the characters remain with you, as does Jamaica Inn itself and the surrounding countryside. Her books have influenced my own writing. It is a shame that during her lifetime, her books were seen as romance, the pinings of a woman... This is suspense at its very best.
One of those books that keeps you thinking..........2007-03-08
I found myself strangely identifying with the heroine even though our lives are completely different. This book has stuck with me and I will read it again and again.
Fantastic Book.......2006-12-28
I've read this book several times. First as a 14 year old, again in my twenties and again recently. It is a gripping tale set on the windswept moors in the south of England. I've actually been to moors and visited Jamaica Inn itself and it is a lonely, wild and windswept place.
It is a gothic tale seen through the eyes of a young woman sent to live at Jamaica Inn. It involves wreckers (people who draw ships to the rocks in order to get their cargo when they sink) and it is full of intrigue and surprises.
If you like this one read Frenchman's Creek (my favorite), My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca, all by Daphne du Maurier. Coldwater Farm by Stella is also extremely good, and funny rather than scary.

great book.......2007-01-01
my fiance finished this book in one sitting and it took me two sittings. This book is a must have for anyone considering a trip to hedonism 2 (or three). and for those who aren't considering the trip it is still very well written and entertaining. over all well worth the purchase price.
Go Chris Santilli.......2006-09-20
Fortunately, I am lucky enough to have Chris as my ENGLISH professor at Elmhurst College this semester!! The book is a must for traveling to Jamaica's famed resort. Chris is the best.
Get for newbies.......2006-08-20
I went to Hedo for the first time this year and was glad to learn more about the resort before I arrived. highly recommended!
what a boring book!.......2006-05-14
We didn't finish the book because we found it completely unerotic and asexual. The author tells you for instance to bring safety pins to hold your toga in place and to bring toenail polish because the sand on the beach will wear it off. Wow!!! The stories told are all childish fun, but there's not a single one titillating. Puritan lack of sexuality. Boring.
A fun read!.......2003-12-01
I might never get the opportunity to go to Hedo, but I'm certainly prepared if I ever do! This book is just packed with tips and tricks of preparing for your trip. It's also full of crucial information regarding the not-so-well-known etiquette of getting wild and crazy with a bunch of like-minded folks. And the stories are just hysterical. So, even if a trip to Hedo isn't in your future, you can have a great time just reading Chris' book.

You'll learn the myths, the truths, and the tips that will make your vacation to Hedonism II the best trip you'll ever take-again and again. Warning: Don't sip a soda pop while reading this book. The bubbles will burn your nostrils as the drink shoots out your nose.
The Myths: Only young singles go to Hedonism II. People walk around naked everywhere. Open sex is rampant. Someone will try to steal your wife.
Every myth has its truths...but Hedonism II is 50% couples-and most guests are over 30, full nudity is only allowed on one beach, the hotel does not permit public sex, and your wife-well, that's her choice. But at Hedonism II you will see what you've never seen before...And you might do it too!

excellent Reading.......2007-09-24
The book is excellent and a must read if you are considering a Hedo Vacation.
This book reminds you of why you love Hedo.......2007-04-17
Ms. Santilli's book, The Naked Truth About Hedonism II, is a good cure for DIF (dreaded island fever or what you feel after returning home from the island).
The Naked Truth evokes the island and especially the resort of Hedo II. If you're a newbie, it's a must read to help get your feet wet. If you've been before, it's a wonderful reminder of why you love the resort ... plus you may read about or see some friends.
This is the must have book for those considering a visit to Hedonism II in Negril, Jamaica.
Hedonism II Book.......2007-04-12
I have several friends that have been to Hedonism II (I haven't been there yet). They attest to the accuracy of the information in this book. It gives a lot of information that you would never find in a tourist review.
A must read for first time visitors to Hedo II.......2007-03-05
This is a must read for all first time travelers to Hedo II. My wife and I wish we had read the book prior to our first visit three years ago. The book is funny and a great introduction to some of the cast of characters you'll meet and activities you can expect to have. We have been there 3 times now and without the benefit of Chris' insight we missed out on a lot on our first trip.
We have made friendships and now schedule our return visits to coincide with new friends we have met. It is truely a blast!
We are in our mid 40s and intitally were a bit apprehensive, particularly my wife. As our first week progressed gradually inhibitions faded - this may be in proportion to the alcohol consumed!!! After two days her top came off at the beach, by the forth day we enjoyed nudity and by the sixtth day she was speaking "french" to several of the single men that were vacationing! It is amazing - but after a week of fun we return to our proper lives in the states, working and parenting etc. What goes on in Hedo stays in Hedo...except for a few pictures lol
But now we are already planning and looking forward to our next visit this November!
Great book - a must read. Kudos to Chris
Great read!.......2006-11-21
Loaded with information, anecdotes, as well as humor. People that have never been will gain a ton of knowledge, and people that have, will find it a great way to ease the DIF, and perhaps learn a thing or two they wished they knew then.

When it comes to pop culture, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) is something of an unsung hero. He wrote radio scripts, screenplays, and comic books (in which capacity he created the original Green Lantern Oath). But Bester is best known for his science-fiction novels, and The Stars My Destination may be his finest creation. First published in 1956 (as Tiger! Tiger!), the novel revolves around a hero named Gulliver Foyle, who teleports himself out of a tight spot and creates a great deal of consternation in the process. With its sly potshotting at corporate skullduggery,
The Stars My Destination seems utterly contemporary, and has maintained its status as an underground classic for forty years. (Bester fans should also note that Vintage has reprinted The Demolished Man, which won the very first Hugo Award in 1953.)
Book Description
Such is the official verdict on Gully Foyle, unskilled space crewman. But Gully has managed to survive for 170 days in the airless purgatory of deep space after the wreck of his ship, and has escaped to Earth carrying a murderous grudge and a secret that could change the course of history.
The novel which in large part inspired both the cyberpunk movement of the 1980s and the science fiction New Wave of the 1960s, THE STARS MY DESTINATION has an unrivalled claim to be the most influential sf book of all time.
Customer Reviews:
power of the mind [no spoilers].......2007-09-04
"The Stars My Destination" finds Mechanics Mate 3rd Class Gulliver Foyle on a quest of obsessive vengeance as the sole survivor of Nomad, a derelict spacecraft poised in the void between the Kuniper belt and Jupiter. The clever science is the foundation in a classic tale brimming with personal and social evolutions while there are tensions between the Inner Planets and Outer Satellites.
Jaunte, a term for teleportation with a concentrated thought up to 1,000 miles, creates massive changes. On the individual level, most people no longer have dependencies upon mechanical means of transportation yet the companies servicing those needs fall into difficulties. Gully, an uneducated and unmotivated person, is also known as a Common Man, one unable to Jaunte. When the Vorga, a craft similar to his own, passes by without replying to the rescue beacons, Gully's hatred inspires him to enact retribution on the ship by any means necessary. Which begs the question; does the end justify the means? Many of his actions are absolutely evil and a bit unanticipated given the novel was written in 1956.
Thank you.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Gully Foyle is marooned in space, and is slowly, bit by bit, running out of resources. A possible rescuer leaves him there, and he gets annoyed. He performs a feat no-one has before, and manages to teleport himself through space.
Now, he is pretty pissed off, and looks to become a destabilising rogue.
The next step in evolution.......2007-03-18
"The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester is, in my opinion, an excellent example of classic science fiction. Starting off in the year 2420, it builds a very creditable world complete with sociological and political mores. This society has been irrevocably altered by new "technology", gaining geographical freedom of movement, but losing a great deal of privacy and personal freedom.
Gully Foyle, Mechanics Mate 3rd class, holds the key to the next step in mankind's evolution. How will he use it?
This book rocked!!.......2007-03-11
I was a little tentative going into this book actually. I try to read a highly regarded classic every once in a while, but many times they come off as dated, or just plain not as good as I hoped. Not so with "The Stars My Destination", I just plain loved this book. The main character, Gully Foyle is not at all a likable person, but as a character you become so enveloped in his story you can't help but be captured. The story line is excellent, and comes across as if it could have been written this year just as easily as 1954. I highly recommend this book for its great characters, tight plot, and a fulfilling and provocative ending. This book is truly a classic and deserves every bit of praise it gets.
Gully Foyle is my name and Terra is my Nation..........2007-03-01
Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination is usually considered one of the finest works of science fiction ever created. Although largely forgotten now, it is a highly imaginative piece of work which involves a sort of futuristic dystopia and a man named Gully Foyle who tries to change things based on a questionable frame of mind.
Alfred Bester stands in a position on the platform of Science Fiction Greats similar to that of Ray Bradbury, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. The only difference is that he is standing behind them and as such, is largely unheard of.
The Stars My Destination is about a fictional Earth that has become controlled by the huge conglomerate corporations. The planets in the Solar System are all at war and there is much havoc associated with the Human race. The novel deals with the dark nature of people, how technology advancement can lead to a very possessive and materialistic society with an emphasis on classes and minorities and how a lack of real education brings out various powerful yet primitive factions.
An interesting feature in this novel is the use of an evil hero. Gulliver (Gully) Foyle is a criminal, murderer and rapist but manages to attack the present situation he lives in because of past wrongs done to him and although he is a criminal, you still find yourself rallying on his behalf throughout the novel.
This story turned out to be worthy of all its acclaim and is a fun and interesting one to read. The reader should note the curious aspects between the historical situation Alfred Bester lived in and how what he has written is very similar to a path our present society is following in many ways.

How to hook somebody on Sci-fi.......2003-12-05
This is simply the finest Sci-Fi book ever written. I agree there may be better authors, depending on choice (Heinlein, Niven, Asimov, etc.), but this book is the pinnacle of achievement.
My poor wife has been subjected to my nerdy sci-fi ways, but I made a convert out of her when I read this book aloud. It reads like poetry, sounds like war, looks like armageddon.
And for anyone who thinks this is your typical book: think again. Gully Foyle is one man you NEVER want to cross.
gully foyle.......2002-02-04
Iread the novel first and then the graphic novel, in the early 70's. The graphic novel was written and drawn by the Pitt brothers ( from Australia , I believe) . The Pitt brothers had a Russ Manning visual style. The story itself is timeless , Edmond Dantes in outer space. I don't understand why this graphic novel got out of print. copyright, ownership squabbles. The modern day equivalent of Gully Foyle is John Riddick, in the film Pitch Black.
Absolutely the best of Bester.......2000-05-31
I first found the graphic adaptation of Alfred Bester's "The Stars, My Destination" in the late seventies in a second-hand bookstore in Naples, Florida... I sat on the floor and read it from cover to cover, paid .50 for it and started my quest to find Vol 2... only to find it had never been printed... This was one of the first (maybe THE first) graphic novels, a cross between comic a book and a novel, with brightly colored panels but complex plot lines and dialog... and no one has come close to its achievement... Gully's single minded drive towards his fate, coupled with his total confusion about who and what he was, along with his complete ignorance of his potential inspired me to strive beyond my imagined limitations... I identified with his suprise at accomplishing acts others said were impossible... and his ability to immediately take advantage of these discoveries... his escape from the frypan to the fire... a hero for all time, Gully is "The Man"... when the movie is made, I will watch it with my son, as he is another Gully, and maybe he will find the same desire to reach beyond this to what is unimagined but more than possible... ps. I forgave my ex for cheating on me, for wrecking the cars, for getting rid of my dog, but she can burn in hell for tearing up the only copy of this book I have ever seen.
the stars my destination.......2000-01-09
To anyone who has ever read a truely fascinating work of fiction, and still can recall all the emotions which that novel stirred deep within their soul, thenthey are the lucky few who know how much I enjoyed this book. I could literally not put it down and I was completely enveloped in every aspect of the novel. It fascinated me how compelled Gully was to fulfill his destiny, no matter what the odds. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in science-fiction. For those of you who are not sci-fi fans, this book could change your mind in an instant. I can honestly say that this book is one of the best books I've ever read in all my life, and I am an avid reader. Believe me, if you read only one book ever again, make it this one. You will realize things about yourself that you never even considered, and also walk away being able to say that you read one of the greatest sci-fi books of all time.
The Stars His Destination.......1999-12-24
One of the finest novels of any genre I have read, The_Stars_My_Destination, or Tiger,_Tiger! as it was originally titled, is the best single work of science fiction master Alfred Bester, author of many short stories I have also been fortunate enough to enjoy. Fans of the comic book works Batman:_The_Dark_Knight_Returns by Frank Miller, and the legendary Watchmen by Alan Moore will delight in this most twisted, vitriolic, and gut crushing revenge quest of the novel's protagonist Gully Foyle, described by Bester early in the book as a stereotypical man transformed into an "infernal machine", with (to him) good reason. This novel is the culmination, in my opinion, of all the other shining moments in Bester's career, which singly are not to be underestimated, incorporating Bester's gathered insights from his numerous fields of study. Brilliantly written and consistently captivating, it's a novel that will make you jump in your seat, and a must for the science fiction afficionado and enthusiasts of great novels of all genres alike.

Continuing the excellent series.......2006-11-12
This book continues the excellent Starman series. The writing continues to be top-notch here, though the art suffers. I know that I am in the minority in this opinion, but I felt that once Tony Harris left, the art went SIGNIFICANTLY downhill, not only in specific style, but, more importantly, in how well it conveyed the script. Yes, all of the essentials are still there, however there is just some personality, especially in regards to the settings and the background, that is gone. This is made more painful by the exclusion of any of the second half of the Times Past stories, which had excellent art and somehow tided me over during the initial run. I also feel that the lack of those stories in a collected format takes away from some of the valuable backgrounds to the events taking place during this book.
However, my artistic gripes aside, the story continues to build here and it is a must read.
Still learning..........2001-06-27
From the introduction of "Bobo" Benetti (a character who definitely deserves his own series)to an excellent explanation of all the various personas of Solomon Grundy, Robinson is in top form in this collection. Filled with some of Tony Harris's best art; this collection shows the series at its best, Starman still learning the role of hero, Shade unleashing a bit of the anger he usually keeps in check, and a great visit with David that shows us the other side (literally) of heroism.
STARMAN - Not Quite as Bright.......2001-03-18
The 5th TPB Collection of James Robinson's Starman is the weakest so far. I should prefice this by saying that this volume is still better than 90% of the comics out there. Robinson's writing is in the top echelon of the industry and he's doing some neat things with the development of the character of Jack Knight. So, where does this TPB stumble...VILLAINS! Jack (Starman) isn't given a strong antagonist in any of his adventures in this volume. The best villain MIST has a stand alone storyline (which is quite good) but Starman needs someone to battle to help him further become the hero that he is capable of being.
This aside, Infernal Devices does have several strong points. The annual 'Talking with David' story is the best to this point. The relationship with Jack and his father (Ted) is still a strong central point for all of the STARMAN ADVENTURES. And, it's always nice to see Jack in over his head when surrounded by heroes like Batman and Sentinel. I hope future stories will just provide a stronger motivation and supervillain to keep things more hectic. Read Starman: Infernal Devices and then go and reread Starman: A Wicked Inclination to see how GREAT this character can be when confronted by a true menace.
Starman-The Best Written Superhero in Comics.......2000-10-22
As the fifth in a series of Starman Trade Paperbacks, Infernal Devices follows the continuing adventures of Starman VII Jack Knight as he teams up with Batman and The Original Green Lantern Alan Scott (now known as Sentinel), to save the life of Solomon Grundy. James Robinson's writing and Tony Harris's artwork is top-notch and is certainly worth the price of this collection. It features stunning revelations (by Nash(The Mist II) and Solomon Grundy)and contains the best Talking with David story, which features ghosts of departed golden age mystery men. Only problem is that I wish this book was also printed in glossy paper like the first three volumes of Starman Trade Paperbacks, all in all, this is one book Golden Age and JSA fans should not miss, a definite must-read.

Book Description
You are deeper than your life shows, and you know it. You are more loving than your relationships allow, more brilliant than your career suggests. In your secret depth of being, you are infinite, creative, boundlessand utterly unable to press your full glory into the world. Or so it seems. In Blue Truth, internationally acclaimed teacher David Deida presents a treasury of insights for uncovering your true heart of purpose, passion, and unquenchable love. In Part One, Deida shows you how to "open as the entirety of the moment, feeling as deep inside and as far outside as you can, for as long as now opens." In Part Two, he reveals how to walk this path in the wilderness of intimate relationship, illuminating "the art and play of sexual gifting" and how to expertly navigate the tangle of anger, jealousy, fear, and lust. "Knowing the truth is fairly useless; feeling it is profound; living it makes all the difference," teaches David Deida. With Blue Truth, you have an unprecedented guide for living your own deep truth, and awakening "as the bare openness you are, in the free offering of love to all."
Customer Reviews:
must read.......2007-07-22
David Deida is a God send,. Read any and all his books if you are ready to take your whole life to the next level. I am so grateful on many different levels for the wisdom, clarity, love and honor he passes on.
a very informed author.......2007-04-10
What a delight to read a man's perspective on the feminine and have it resonate so clearly. This was recommended by one of my spiritual "brothers" and I found it to be a sensitive, aware portrayal of the masculine/feminine dynamic - at least as far as it goes. I'm sure he says other things elsewhere, and I'll be reading some of them. It's a book for women to better understand men, and vice versa. What a huge contribution that is!
This is just Adi Da for the unaware..........2006-07-14
For a good long while David Deida was a devotee of Adi Da--aka Franklin Jones--the thoroughly discredited, cult-leading and outrightly abusive guru both listed at the most noted anti-cult websites on the internet, and in critical volumes beyond it.
Strangely then (as one would have assumed Deida to have learned his lesson when leaving Da's organisation), his work is actually a continuance of the principles he took from Adi Da and in part just an outright copy of them. For example, his teaching on men, women and desire is ripped wholesale from Da's relationship and sexual considerations of the 70's into the 80's, just as his teaching on the emotional character of women (which good old Da advocated his male followers to slap and hit as they required `the theatre') is lifted from the same thin and reductively misogynistic separation of the sexes. Plus, Deida has also taken his stage model built upon three ascending levels from Adi Da, and fitted Da's 7 stage model into that sneakily compacted framework, along with using the booze, sex and drugs element of Da as part of his teaching, especially in Waiting To Love. All in all, this is just a rerun of Da and it is little wonder that Deida changed his name to fit the process--i.e., DEIty and DA pressed together to follow right after David, while his actual surname is Greenberg.
Simply, if you don't believe me then just check it out for yourself! The literature is there, across the net, and is widely available. Ken Wilber has been depending on the same stuff for years, and also as an Adi Da supporter (and great friend of Deida) is equally suspect for the same reason. Besides, you only have to read Da and then consider Deida's alleged guru 'Mykonos' offered in Wild Nights. Eerily close in character and theme, aren't they? Actually a bit like the authoritarian and abusive redux of Da that Wilber has discovered over the last few years in Andrew Cohen.
Thus it is a simple matter of just follwing A to B to C to perhaps avoid the rehashed offerings from a sickening cult. You have been warned, my friends, you have been warned...
Wonderful book; a keeper.......2006-03-08
This is a truly amazing book. This is the second David Deida book I have read. Six months ago I started my first year of law school, in a new city where I knew nobody. I was really lost for a long time and hit a new low. I eventually took the initiative to do several things to improve my situation, and this book was one of them. It has really helped to change my life by realizing just how closed off I was/am to the world. Change is a slow process, of course, but this book really helped and continues to help. The advice is solid, true, and open. There are no false pretenses in this book; no ego; just insight and something that offers to help.
Also, Deida's writing style is very beautiful and sincere, which makes the book that much more helpful.
