Not intended for serious cooks, but ideal for fastidious fans of Ms. Cornwell, Scarpetta's Winter Table is perfect for the thrillerphile who has everything. This offbeat, 81-page novella takes you behind the scenes to Dr. Kay Scarpetta's kitchen, where you'll learn how to make her "Bad Mood Pasta Primavera," "Holiday Pizza," and "Childhood Key Lime Pie"--just to name a few. Along for the culinary festivities are the doctor's trusty cohorts, Pete Marino, captain of the Richmond police department, and Scarpetta's niece, Lucy. Both add their favorite concoctions, such as Marino's "Cause-of-Death Eggnog" and Lucy's "Friendly Grill." Those who have read Cornwell's Point of Origin will find a double delight in Winter Table, as it's amply stuffed with references from the bestselling thriller. However, recipe readers be warned: there are no measurements, exact lists of ingredients, or detailed cooking instructions. It reads like a short story, with vague descriptions of what each dish contains--the intent being that each person will make a slightly different version. This may be frustrating for a by-the-book cook, but flexible, freestyle chefs may find it's just what the doctor ordered.
Book Description
When Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the intrepid chief medical examiner of Virginia, isn't busy solving crimes, she is concocting delicious dishes in her kitchen. In Scarpetta's Winter Table, Patricia Cornwell takes her readers behind the scenes for intimate glimpses of her three major characters as they come together to celebrate the week between December 26, "the biggest letdown day of the year," and New Year's. On the day after Christmas, Scarpetta make her special pizza pie and Detective Pete Marino creates his "cause-of-death eggnog" (he uses corn liquor), while Lucy Farinelli (a special agent with ATF and Scarpetta's only niece) goes on a long run in the snowy suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. The next day, Scarpetta flies to Miami to spend a few days with her querulous mother and Sindbad, her Siamese cat. In Richmond, Lucy entertains her friends, all from various federal law enforcement agencies; and Marino first apprehends and then befriends Jimmy Simpson, a ten-year-old boy who had been snowballing his house. In the final scene of the novelette, all the characters (including Jimmy's mother, who seems to catch Marino's eye) gather in Scarpetta's warm house on a cold night to enjoy her famous stew. This book--a special "gift" from Cornwell to her readers--is perfect for the Christmas-present buyer, and gives the reader insights into her best-known characters that cannot be found in any other work. It is illustrated with photographs that suggest the locales and activities of her characters, and it includes the ingredients for all the dishes described in the story.

short and sweet.......2005-07-04
a lovely treat to read at one sitting. can't wait to try the recipes!!
it is a fun read but not much substance.........2003-07-02
... If I had to spend [money]to get this book, I would be quite disappointed because it is so short. It seems to me the author put this together in a hurry to make some money. It is not bad but not much in there. I enjoyed reading it but the plot was a bit [stale.]
Great book!.......2003-04-18
As a Patricia Cornwell fan, I was dubious about buying a spin-off book and possibly destroying my image of Dr. Scarpetta. However, my curiosity (and stomach) finally overcame my reservations. This book is absolutely wonderful! Dishes are written in a narrative form and are simple to figure out, leaving just enough room for imagination and a personal touch, as recipes ought to be. The story is more in-depth than I would have thought for a book like this, which was a nice surprise. I've never seen a book like this and think PC deserves credit for breaking new ground by introducing a book that gives recipes as well as a story to compliment them. Or should I say, a new story with recipes to compliment it! Basically, it describes a Kay Scarpetta feast made with love for two of her favorite people, in detail and uninterrupted by crime. These feasts are one of my favorite parts of these novels, and this one reads just like the novels, although just a little more in depth (and of course with recipes!) I suspect you need to be a fan to really enjoy this book, but I entertain often and our guests haved raved over every dish we've made from this book (as well as from the other PC recipe book Food To Die For, which I also love dearly). This Winter Table story pairs with its recipes better than a fine wine, and gives the reader not only a recipe but the heart and soul and inspiration to warm your heart as well as your tummy. :)
Beautiful Gift Book for Scarpetta Enthusiasts.......2003-02-16
This slim, black and white book is a wonderful gift for fans of Dr. Kay Scarpetta. The book is structured into fiction-like chapters, with headings for the "recipes." The recipes are not strictly linear recipes. There are no lists of ingredients here, just stories to accompany the food.
For example, on page 5 you will find a recipe for "Marino's Cause of Death Eggnog." The author uses a play on words with "yokes" to insinuate the kind of death that was approaching. The recipe includes the dialogue of the characters (Marino, Lucy, and Scarpetta) as Marino makes the eggnog, and the characters sip it.
On page 93, Dr. Kay herself gives a personal note to the reader. "Since the fun of this is that no concoction will ever be the same, you are encouraged to take notes." Five pages of note-lined paper follow this challenge. This little note is the key to this cookbook: since the recipes are not exact, enjoy yourself by making them up! The book provides only basic outlines of the ingredients. It's up to you to decide how much salt or how many eggs! Lose yourself in Scarpetta's world!
This is a wonderful treasure for fans of Patricia Cornwell. The free-flowing dialogue makes for a unique and unorthodox collection of recipes.
The typos are not typos - they are references.......2001-12-21
The earlier reviewer who complained about the misspelling of yolks as yokes clearly missed the point. This is a joke, because Marino uses the word "yoke" frequently to mean choke or strangle. It's a play on words! Don't let the other review deter you.

Book Description
It was the publicity stunt from hell as far as Kirsten Rumm was concerned. She may have been writing the book about her late husband, aeronautical daredevil Demon Rumm, but she didn’t see the need to play host to the arrogant bad-boy actor starring in the film version’s title role. Still, for the good of the project, Kirsten agreed to share her beachfront home with the impossibly sexy screen idol.
Any other woman would do anything to be in her sandals, but Kirsten wasn’t falling for Rylan North, even if he did play his role of male lead to perfection. His down-home charm, his gentleness and virile charisma, might be seducing her in every sense of the word, but he was an actor, after all. Seducing an audience was his job. Rylan could have any woman he wanted. So why was he so desperately pretending to want her?
From the moment he saw her, Rylan North knew that Kirsten Rumm was the woman he’d been waiting all his life to cast as the star in his real-life love story. What did it matter if he was every woman’s fantasy if he couldn’t get Kirsten to so much as glance his way? He’d caught the look of past hurt behind her sky-blue eyes–a dark secret that shadowed the sparkle. Rylan was determined to find out what tragedy held this passionate woman back from a second chance at love even if it cost him his reputation, his career, and his life. But first he’d have to get Kirsten to act on her instincts . . . and to trust the flesh-and-blood man behind the fantasy.

Hot, Sexy Romance.......2007-05-30
Unlike most other people that reviewed this book, I could hardly put it down. I was surprised, actually, when I came to review it how little everyone liked it. I thought it was a downright sexy romance novel and I loved both of the characters. Rylan North is the most coveted actor in Hollywood and he's supposed to be arrogant and sure of himself. Kirsten Rumm is a widow with some issues and he's the perfect antidote for her. What I really liked about this book was his genuine kindness toward her, even when she was constantly pushing him away. I loved the dialogue and the storyline. I loved the whole book from start to finish.
A Must to Avoid.......2007-01-14
Sandra Brown's "Demon Rumm" is a tedious romance with basically unlikable characters. It centers on Ryland North, a famous top Hollywood movie actor researching a movie on stunt pilot Demon Rumm. North moves into the Rumm beach house with Rumm's widow Kirsten. From the very first glance, North desires Kirsten. Kirsten has some strange baggage that isn't revealed until the last few pages. As the male romantic hero, North is obnoxious. He parades around nude soon after arriving at the Rumm residence. Brown has about 12 different places in the 214-page tale where the size of North's private part and what direction it points is detailed. It wasn't interesting when Brown first brings it up & becomes tediously less interesting as the novel progresses. For some unknown reason, Kirsten who asks North to leave her house is unable to get him to do so. Then also inexplicably, she appears to have feelings for North. None of this is reasonably communicated to the reader. Brown's failure to understand the male psyche is further revealed when because of an impotence problem, Rumm decides to solve the problem by crashing his plane. Of course, the reader is led to believe that death is easier than seeing a doctor. The tale goes beyond improbable to downright tacky. This book is a must to avoid. Taxi!
This is not up to par.......2006-07-03
I usually find Sandra Brown's books page turning. This one was definitely not a page turner. In fact I'm struggling to finish it. I can't figure out why every chapter is the same scenario in different words. There appears to be no story here at all.
Eeeek. I want my money back.......2005-12-15
This book is about a famous heart-throb (Rylan) who moves in with a woman (Kirsten) who wrote the screenplay for his latest movie. The movie is about her late husband's life and death. Rylan moves in to learn more about him and in the meantime, he falls in love with Kirsten.
The problem is, the story and the characters lack depth. The reader never gets to understand why these two people liked each other. They never even got to know each other. Every chapter is the same scenario; Kirsten avoiding Rylan and Rylan rethinking his every move like a 16 year old boy in heat.
I am no longer going to blindly purchase a book because Sandra Brown's name is on the cover.
DEMON RUMM.......2005-10-13
VERY ENTERTAINING AND FAST READING. A GOOD ROMANCE NOVEL.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. ANOTHER HIT FOR SANDRA BROWN.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Sci Fi, but much different than the first novel.......2007-07-06
As another reviewer said, this sequel is much different than the Orphan's War, the first in the series. Alot less combat, alot more talking and political stuff. That doesn't mean its a worse book, it just means the focus is different and you might like it more or less depending on which parts of the first one you liked
I personally finished it up and couldn't wait to read the 3rd one, which apparently isn't anywhere near being published yet, but if you want wall to wall alien combat you might want to try something else. I will say that some of the parts dealing with the main character's friends and new love interest seemed a little forced, and both books in this series are the kind you can read and immediately forget, so its not going to change your entire world view or anything with hard hitting philosophical questions or different ways of looking at yourself or anything like that. Its more like sci-fi lite than the kind of thing you might have gotten from Heinlein, to whom Buttner is often compared on the back covers of his books
If I can find anything else written by Buettner, I'll buy it though, so take that for whatever its worth. If you're looking for a good book to read on vacation or on the plane/train/car ride or rainy afternoon, you could do alot worse than this one
A lot of fun.......2007-04-23
Really enjoyed this sequel. And am looking forward to reading the next in the series due out in 2008. This is a fun action packed, cowboys in space adventure novel, fleshed out by an entertaining lead, with a distinctive voice. Fans of John Scalzi should try this author. Highly Recommended.
Decent followup.......2007-02-16
I enjoyed Orphanage, it was a fun and quick read. Yes, as many have said it reminded me of Starship Troopers and The Forever War, but that was a good thing.
With Orphan's Destiny it deals with the Peace and how Wander deals with it. He feels the alienation and survivors guilt but faces it in his own way. I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first because it dealt with the aftermath of the first book. I wish that there was more interaction with Munchkin and her son, but maybe in the next book(?).
If you liked the first book then you should enjoy this. A good book and a quick read.
must read.......2007-01-11
This was outstanding read, I really enjoyed this book and the whole series.
Near-Future Military SciFi.......2006-11-26
ORPHAN'S DESTINY(2005) is the sequel to ORPHANAGE(2004). ORPHANAGE was a semi-juvenile military scifi tale, in the vein of Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS.
In ORPHANAGE, we were introduced to the main character in the series - Jason Wander, who is given a military option instead of jail, when he starts to become rebellious in a foster home situation, after his sole remaining relative has been killed in one of the projectile strikes against Earth's cities by aliens who are intent on taking over Earth for their uses. After a eventful boot camp experience, Wander is assigned to support a Division of Space-Faring Infantry "Orphans" to try to save humanity by exacting revenge on the aliens whose base of activities has been tracked to the Jupiter moon Ganymede.
In ORPHAN'S DESTINY, Wander and his decimated Division come back to a hero's welcome, and he is allowed to keep his field promotion, as long as he sticks to the current presidential administration's party line, that the the slugs have been defeated.... But, Wander isn't so sure... This book is definately more mature and believable than the prequel; but, there is very little original material.
If you really liked ORPHANAGE, then I'd recommend ORPHAN'S DESTINY; but, I don't think this book stands well on its own. I suspect there will eventually be a third book in this series - but, the author should take his time, and make sure the third book has something new to offer.

Product Description
At 25, Jason Wander could be called the Grand Old Man of space conflict, having survived Earth's very first alien attack. Launched in 2039 from Jupiter's moon Ganymede, the alien race called the Slugs devestated Earth's surface and slaughtered millions. Humanity's massive counterstrike tore directly into Ganymede, halting the invasion. And Wander, who, onlyfour years earlier, joined the military to escape jail, found himself the defacto acting general of the defining Battle of Gandymede - and commander of Earth's rag-tag surviving force.
Earth'sappreciation comes slowly... if at all. Marooned on the icy moon's surface and out of radiocontact for five months, Wander and his troops receive a welcome suprise in the form of a relief ship Excalibur. But that suprise quickly turns bitter as their home-coming reveals an Earth no longer under Slug assault, but still quaking from the wreckage. Economic recovery - not a better defense - is the hard rule of the day, and anyone not in step with the times is quickly shunted aside. Not suprisingly, veteran soldiers do not fit into this new world order, Jason Wander least among them.
But humanity's indifference to those who served is overturned when an undetected Slug fleet launches terrifying assaults on an Earth already in rubble. With the focus of the attack on the space defenses at Cape Canaveral, the still-intact Excalibur is suddenly cut off - and with it, Earth's few remaining ships in orbit.
Galvanized, Wander sets in motion a daring recall of his own; scavenging together both a mission crew and a military shuttlenot consigned to teh post-War scrap heap, he will make his way to the Excalibur - and back into space. there, he will turn the immensecarrier into a floating blockade against the advancing invasion. But there's just one problem: the mission is pure suicide....

Back to War.......2007-03-27
Back to war. After we left our hero Jason Wander at the end of Orphanage, we believed that we were free from the slugs. Wander was one of the few who doubted it. It took him over two years to return to earth and the earth was in sad shape.
The destruction that had been so devastating before he left, was now even worse. After almost 2 years of near nuclear winter, vegetation and animals were struggling to survive the climate change and it would be years before the atmospheric dust cleared itself up.
Orphan has a new Military mission to convince the media and the population that the threat is over and that money should be spent on rebuilding the world, not military spending. The problem is, he is not sure he believes it. Like many veterans, he struggles with guilt: why did he survive and so many others did not? Why did he bury his love and his friends so far from home?
Then his worst fears are confirmed: there is an attack that takes out earth's only military spaceport. He must once again do the impossible, and lead a small band of determined men and women back to space for a last-ditch effort to save earth from a fleet of 121 ships larger than any we have, and 1 ship the size of a city.
Read Orphan's Destiny and see if Wander can pull off a miracle a second time, or will humanity lose all hope.

Excellent and Inspiring!!.......2007-04-05
This is the second book by Leslie Sansone and I loved it! She is so inspiring. I have been fortunate enough to meet her in person and she is as sweet in real life as she is in her book. She teaches you how to eat smart to make good choices. I highly reccommend it as well as her other walking products. Can't wait for more from her!
Best recipes ever.......2007-01-30
I picked this book up at the library originally because the walking part of the title caught my eye, but it is the recipes that convinced me to buy my own copy. I have never found so many recipes that I (and my husband and 17 year old son) really like in one cookbook: black bean chili with avocados, orange pork loin, etc., etc. The best part is that none of them are that hard or contain that many ingredients and they are healthy for you. The book also contains a lot of good practical advice on improving your eating habits.
Think Smart.......2006-03-24
Leslie's new book helped me "think smart" about what is really holding me back from loosing weight. Each week you work on a new issue and you journal directly in the book. Also great receipes. Love the book.
GET THEE BEHIND ME, TEMPTATION !.......2006-03-12
All of us want to look better. All of us want to feel better. Many have tried more fad diets than we care to remember - all of which did little or nothing for our weight or our good nature. For me, Leslie Sansone's programs work because they're simple, they make sense and, of all things, they're effective.
After creating "Walk Away the Pounds" in which she focuses on exercise, Sansone turned her attention to food - what we eat, how we eat, and why we eat it. I hear myself in so many of these passages, immediately recognizing the habit patterns I've developed over the years which, in reality, are neither healthful nor helpful. She makes it easy to change those habits by approaching them one at a time.
Further, she explains how we can eat healthful meals when we're dining out, and what a "normal serving size" looks like. I'll never tell what I considered a "normal" serving of ice cream or mashed potatoes! And, how about those snacks - what they can do and what they cannot do. Last but not least, Mom was right - breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Sansone tells us why in her no nonsense approach to healthier eating.
As she points out, choosing the right foods isn't a matter of knowledge or intention, it is a case of slips happening "when we're tired, starving or overcome by temptation. These moments are going to happen to all of us from time to time. The trick is to learn to head them off at the pass whenever possible...."
Listen and learn.
