Officer Jim Chee and Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believe that answers lie in the sacred clown's final cryptic message to the Tano people. My Favorite Hillerman.......2007-07-19
This is my favorite Tony Hillerman book--and I've read (or that is, listened to) all of them twice. Although the mysteries always are intriguing, quite frankly, I never care who killed whom. I read Hillerman's books because I learn so much about another culture, or in the case of Sacred Clowns, two cultures--the Hopi and Navaho. And to me this is the best, most informative of the bunch. Jim Chee's common sense and humanity really shine in this book. As long as Hillerman continues to write, I will continue to drink in his wonderful books.
Another enjoyable read from Hillerman..........2005-12-21
I see there is a lot of mixed reviews given for this particular mystery of Hillerman's. Sometimes I buy or pick up his books and I am not sure if I am picking up one I've read before. If I read this one, it was a long time ago...and even if it was a repeat, I enjoyed it.
Hillerman has spent his life in the Four Corners area of the U.S. coming to know the various tribes that have lived there. I think I read his books as much for the background, history, religious knowledge, etc. that Hillerman gives his readers on the Navajos, Hopis, and many other tribes I am not familiar with, though I know about the Pueblo Indians from American History.
The two main characters of his books, Leaphorn and Chee, are both smart men who love their people and the land they live in, and want to see the right thing done no matter what. In this book Hillerman brings up one of worse things that we white people ever did, which was introduce the Native Americans to hard liquor (as a means to control them and get their properties without paying what they were worth). I know it continues to be an ongoing problem since I work within the deaf community and there are a lot of Native Americans born with hearing loss...some from genetics, some from fetal alcohol syndrome, which forms the basis eventually for this book.
I like the way these men handle their lives and their jobs, and wish that more men in all cultures were as honorable and lived by higher moral standards as pertains to how we treat each other.
I found the concept of the use of clowns in this society as a means to point out what the 'people' were doing wrong, in this case, selling their sacred belongings. I thought I knew a lot about Lincoln, but I had no idea he sent these beautiful canes out to the chiefs of these clans recognizing their place in their society. From what Hillerman says it was to keep the Indians from entering the Civil War on either side. I'd like to read more about this.

One of the Best.......2005-05-03
Tony Hillerman is a wonderful author. A Scared Clown is a very outstanding mystery book.
In little town, Shiprock, Officer Chee and Detective Leaphorn discover a human skeleton. Whoever that was, was brutally murdered and it is up to them to crack the mystery. The characters in this book are described where you can just picture what they look like and what everything else looks like. The author, Mr. Hillerman, did a good job with imagery. It felt as if I were there with them trying to solve the mystery. The author kept me interested with his diction. I couldn't stop reading the book, I just kept going.
I recommend people to read this book if they are into mystery books, because I know they will feel the same way I did when I opened the book and when I closed the book.
Well Done.......2004-11-01
This is a Jim Chee mystery. Chee has been assigned to find a young boy who has run away from school. Meanwhile, a man has been murdered at the school where the boy ran away from. While Chee is on the trail of the boy, the boy's uncle happens to be murdered almost right in front of him. Coincidence? Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Chee's boss, doesn't believe in coincidences. But there are no clues linking the three incidents. It's up to Chee to figure out what's been happening in case the boy is in danger.
As with all of Hillerman's books, this tale is rich with detail from Navajo culture. Through Chee's eyes, we witness a Pueblo ceremonial and learn about some of the roles tribesmen play during the ritual. Despite the urgency of the situation, Chee must divide his attention between his job and his personal life, between the ethics of his tribe and the law. This book will draw you in from page one.
Navahos and more.......2004-07-08
This time we confront a different Pueblo People the Hopi. In the Hopi there are sect or Koshari societies; they do not practice curing; they are concerned with fertility and growth. Their religion is more personal than public and clans are most important.
Along With a new people we are treated to a piece of history; The Spanish had a tradition of The Canes of Office here. Governors and lieutenant governors and the like were issued a cane as a symbol of office. Ten years after the Gadsden purchase. The Indians stayed neutral curing the Civil War. So President Abraham Lincoln has some canes made of black ebony and crowned with silver inscribed with his signature,"A. Lincoln." These where given the nineteen different pueblos, each cane had the pueblo name on it.
Tony Hillerman spins his magic once more in this story of missing people and a death that may be related or religion and again maybe just down right greed. Chee and Leaphorn bust work together to find meaning and reason. In the Hillerman tradition all the clues are laid out in the open allowing you to bet them to the conclusion if you can.

Thought Provoking.......2007-03-09
Hillerman shows how our point of reference colors what we see and hear and how we respond. For instance, clowns may be admonishing rather than entertaining. This one leaves you paying closer attention to your actions and how they may be viewed. Oh, there is a mystery to solve, but I got more wrapped up in the Indian Culture and the contrasts.
Abridge and miss the ambience.......2005-05-20
Great novel however I would not waste time with an abridgment unless you are strapped for time as you miss the ambience.

Book Description
People magazine named Eloisa James' novel
Midnight Pleasures “Page Turner of the Week” and raved “Romance writing does not get much better than this.” Now the acclaimed author returns with another sumptuous tale of passion and misadventure in Regency England....
Gabrielle Jerningham cherishes the portrait of her betrothed, the perfect Peter Dewland...until she meets his commanding older brother Quill. But it is Peter to whom she has been promised. And how can she possibly transform her voluptuous, outspoken self into the poised gentlewoman Peter requires?
When Gabby’s shocking décolletage plunges to her waist at her first ball, Peter is humiliated. But Quill comes to the rescue, to the peril of his heart. An accident years before has left Quill plagued by headaches--the kind that grows more excruciating with strenuous exercise. Needless to say, this hardly bodes well for siring progeny. But the very sight of Gabby leaves Quill breathless. One forbidden kiss and Quill vows to have her, headaches--and Peter--be damned! But it will take a clever man--and a cleverer woman--to turn the tables on propriety and find their way to true love....

i am never disappointed when i order a book thru amazon.
Truly engaging hero and heroine........2006-06-10
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found Gabby to be a wonderful character. I get so very tired of authors constantly making their heroines so incredibly beautiful that men fall over with lust just from looking at them. Gabby was a "real" woman, she had normal flaws but still was comfortable in her own skin. She needed reassurance but was willing to believe another persons evaluations of her charms and intelligence. I found that charming. So many fictional heroines must be told over and over and over and over that they are beautiful, pretty, sweet, desirable, competent, worthwhile. I just get tired of it. She was a woman that I would actually like to have as a friend. For me, the recommendation doesn't come any higher than that.
Quill was a little harder to like. He insisted on complete truth from Gabby once she was his wife but did not hesitate to lie to her in order to get what he wanted. Naturally, this was the character flaw that the author wanted us to see him work his way through. I personally think she did a great job of bringing him along slowly in order to make the changes to his personality believable.
The information about migraine headaches was woven throughout the plot in a fascinating manner. Also, thank you Ms. James, for not making us suffer through encounters with Gabby's father. He was painted as a very unpleasant character and I had quite enough of him.
A very pleasurable read. Highly recommended, especially if you like a heroine who actually could be a real person and not just a work of fiction.
4 1/2 stars.....Truly Enchanting!!.......2006-03-09
This book is better than the other two Pleasure Series (Potent and Midnight Pleasures)....both characters are likable, truly enchanting. The only complaint I had was that since it is the last series, Ms. James should've at least revisited the characters from the other two novels. There were few parts from Sophie and Patrick but none from Charlottle and Alex. Other than that, it is a very enjoyable read.
James is excellent; but Enchanting Pleasures was not the book for me.......2005-10-06
This is my second Eloisa James novel & I liked it enough that I'll pick up another soon, but I was on the whole frustrated.
The beginning of the novel rolls along quite nicely; Gabrielle is really delightful, both clever and naive, and Quinn is stiff but immediately endearing.
What bothered me is that once they're actually married, the plot starts to hinge on how angry it makes Quinn that Gabrielle (1) doesn't want to provoke his migraines because she is horrified by how painful they are (2) won't give up looking for a solution that Quinn hasn't already tried. It's easy to understand where they're both coming from; Quinn is proud, and he's wounded enough that he can be cruel, while Gabby is thin-skinned and maddeningly optimistic.
But all of the fights and battles were painful to read. A little too real for me, to be honest.
I really, really liked the side-plot with the marquis and the fashion columnist. It would have made a great book on its own right.
Fantastic...........2005-03-16
I was taken with Quill in MIDNIGHT PLEASURES, and was happy to read his story. He was great, and Gabby was comical and serious and lovely all at the same time, it seemed. Patrick was a nice addition here, as was the wonderful Sophie.

Sort of glad Spielberg or Lucas never touched it.......2007-08-14
All of the Mushroom Planet books should be considered as gems by the major movie producers, but think about the political correctness they would likely impose. The original story had two boys, Dave and Chuck, building the spacecraft. I'm sure most Hollywood producers would inflict a girl into the scene with no regard to the integrity of the author's written word. In fact there is almost no role played by any female in these books. Would that stop the Hollywood distortion machine from wreaking havoc with the original story line ? NO. If the Mushroom Planet saga ever is made into film, my prediction is that it will bear scant resemblance to Eleanor Cameron's superlative vision of a small invisible planet visited by two small boys.
Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet.......2007-01-07
This is a great book which I read when I was 10 years old, and I never
forgot it. I'm nearly 60 now, and I wanted to find the book and relive the adventure. And so I did, and I loved the story now as much as I did
almost 50 years ago. The storyline is ageless, a frolic which is still
enjoyable.
An Out Of This World Adventure.......2006-12-11
The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet is a science fiction book written by Eleanor Cameron. The book is about two friends, David and Chuck, who build a spaceship in response to a want ad placed in the newspaper by a Mr. Tyco Bass. He is a two-thousand year old Basidiumite, or Mushroom Person, who needs the two boys to travel to his home planet Basidium-X to help save his people.
The main reason I enjoyed reading this book is because the story gets started right away and the plot develops quickly. In the first few pages the reader learns that the main character David is interested in outer space and pretends in bed each night that he is traveling in his own spaceship to other planets. He wishes he could find a little planet just his size which he could explore in just a day or two. The newspaper ad placed by Mr. Bass promises the two boys who successfully build the spaceship an adventure. It quickly becomes apparent that David shall get his wish and will soon travel to another planet, only this time not in his imagination.
David and his best friend Chuck live in Pacific Grove, California. They build the spaceship with scrap metal and lumber found in the boatyard owned by Chuck's grandfather. Even though it might seem unrealistic to believe that two eleven year old boys could successfully build a spaceship, the author convinces the reader it can happen through the use of Mr. Bass and his un-natural powers. Although the boys build the spaceship, it is Mr. Bass who quickly makes the spacecraft capable of traveling into space by adding a rocket motor and special coating to its surface. Since Mr. Bass is not originally from the planet earth, it is easy for the reader to accept his ability to perform amazing tasks and make marvelous inventions such as his "stroboscopic telescope" used to view Basidium-X.
After meeting Mr. Bass the boys blast-off on their journey and take along a gentle hen named Mrs. Pennyfeather for their mascot. The main conflict of the story is revealed when David and Chuck land on Basidium-X. They learn that the Basidiumites, or Mushroom People, are sick and dying because they don't have any magic plants left to eat. A drought has destroyed the special mushroom plants that grow in the mountains at the Place of the Hidden Water. While on the planet, David and Chuck meet several Basidiumites, including the lovable thinkers Mebe and Oru and the serious ruler Ta. I really enjoyed the characters Mebe and Oru because they seemed so innocent and helpless.
Read the book to find out whether or not David and Chuck are successful in their mission to save the Basidiumites and learn how important one small chicken can be to an entire race! The book will leave you wanting to read more about the Mushroom People and the mysterious Mr. Bass.

STILL just as terrific as the first time!.......2006-09-20
I'm so happy to see that I'm not the only 40+ person who has rediscovered this book from their childhood. I, too, first read this when I picked it up in the school library around 1967 or so. I've thought about this story on and off thru my entire adult life and FINALLY asked a librarian while visiting the other day.....she went straight to it after only getting a brief description of the story. I sat down last night and began re-reading.....I could feel myself smiling and slowly slipping back into my carefree childhood. I only wish Eleanor Cameron were still alive that I could write and thank her for creating such an incredible story. It feels like a long overdue homecoming! I can't wait to get home and read some more (just like I did 40 yrs ago!!!)
Product Description
Chuck and David gasped. There, in the telescope, a tiny greenish dat appeared, shining through the vast black of outer space. The mysterious little man spoke: " I should like you two boys to set off this very night for the Mushroom Planet!" "Tonight?" repeated Chuck faintly. "But, how..." David began. How, indeed, could they ever hope to reach that pale and ghostly moon. No other earth dwellers even knew it existed!

Jungian analyst Jean Bolen hit the big time in the early 1980s with one of the first New Age publishing successes, Goddesses in Everywoman. Every woman in America seemed engrossed with identifying her goddess and using the archetypes of the Greek pantheon to guide her out of the patriarchal system to greater self-knowledge and self-esteem. Bolen again hangs a lantern aloft for feminists and lovers of light everywhere with this slim volume. Though only 87 pages, The Millionth Circle has the potential to become the latest bible for the Jungian/feminist/evolution-of-consciousness movement (remember Women Who Run with the Wolves?). The premise is based on Ken Keyes Jr.'s "Hundredth Monkey" theory: that a behavioral change in a growing number of individuals will reach critical mass, and the entire population's consciousness will leap forward to embrace the new behavior as if by magic. Bolen's version is this: form consensus-based, peace-loving circles of support, and one day the millionth circle could alter the psyche of the human race. Written in free verse from chapter 3 on, The Millionth Circle is a dandy manual for creating women's circles, which Bolen hopes will one day save the world. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
Having searched for years for a book to recommend while leading women's circles, Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen decided to write her own. In The Millionth Circle, she explains how to form a circle, with whom, and how to anticipate and resolve conflicts as they arise. Written in poetic language that invites readers to use intuition and draw upon their own insights, The Millionth Circle is designed to be the tool and inspiration for women to create new circles or deepen and transform existing ones into vehicles of societal and psychospiritual change. A combination of vision and how-to, it is Dr. Bolen's most activist work to date.

Small, but packed with information.......2007-08-12
Might just be the push folks need to step out in faith and create their own circle.
Has a very "step by step" feel for those who have not experienced dwelling in a circle before.
Amazing, Creative and Inspiriting.......2007-06-09
My cousin recommended this book to me and was currently in a circle of her own. I attened it as a guest and as amazed by how I was in a room of 12 women I did not know but I felt completely comfortable and did feel like I was being judged or my wardrobe or weight picked apart. Then I started to realize how cut off woman and men are from each other...we get so lost in comparing ourselves and feeling so isolated and becoming so fake that we dont know who we really are inside and our minds become so clouded and we can't make the right decisions.
After reading this book, only took me 45 min! It reads like a poem so you use the creative side of the brain and it gave me a lot of insights and ideas and I have started my own circle! I was amazed when I sent out the first email 10 of 12 people responded within the first 15 mins! It makes you think of things differently and the exercises and intentions of the book really make a difference!
Enjoy!
small but "meaty".......2006-07-31
This is a small book which one might be tempted to race through, given its size... Do not be fooled! It is a very "meaty" (substantial) book, filled with wisdom and insight and useful information. I would suggest it be taken in little "bites," so as to properly digest all the nutrients it has to offer. It is something that one can use as a concise guide, to be referred to time & time again, and to be held up as a shining example of the strength and healing power of women's circles. A true gem. Blessings, All.
Broad application for the concepts of The Millionth Circle.......2003-03-12
Working as I do in the corporate environment, I have used the principles contained in this concise book to create healthy alternatives to the typical hierarchical meeting. One does not have to have a background in women's spirituality to understand its premise or its practical application in many settings. As businesses of all sizes seek to move beyond traditional organizational forms, the book provides the outline of how furture organizations can work NOW.
A Wonderful Introduction to Circles.......2003-01-31
This is a very good read if you know nothing about circles. It can be read in a couple of hours and covers the explanation of circles, the do's and dont's. And for me, the book stirred an interest to learn more.
Yes, there are books that tell you a lot more about circles, but if you've just heard about the idea this is the book to read.
Jean gives circle information in an easy to understand format and portrays her enthusiasm about creating the Millionth Circle.
I've recommended this book to all of my friends.
