4 out of 5 stars Delightful Read!.......2006-06-26

When Sheila Shelbourne, a well known newscaster and womanizer is found murdered, the primary suspect is Diega (Dee) DelValle, a school teacher and recent fling. But as Dee and her three best friends (a great cast of characters) set out to clear Dee, they unwittingly cast the suspicion on another of their own and now have to find the murderer to clear two members of their group. They soon find out that finding a murderer in a haystack of jilted lovers, an ex-husband, abusive father and career competitors isn't going to be easy or safe, especially for Dee.

This book was a fun and satisfying read and is very well written. The four main characters are well defined and their bond of friendship touching and real. My only complaint is that I wanted to know more about the characters' pasts and what makes them tick. While we do learn a lot about one of the women in the group, the backgrounds of Dee and Tully (the two main characters) are glossed over with a few words. I cared enough about them to want to know more details and hopefully will learn more in Ms. Dilucchio's next book.

4 out of 5 stars Don't mess with the media!!.......2006-05-10

Dee DelValle made a mistake. She had a brief fling with an L.A. talking head, Sheila Shelbourne. It's bad enough that this fling led to Dee breaking up with Evie Taylor. Now, to make matters worse, Dee is a prime suspect for Sheila's murder.

Dee knows quite a few of the people involved. The ones she doesn't know, her friends do. So Felicia, Tully, Jenny, and Dee decide to find out who killed Sheila. There are plenty of suspects. Old lovers. Competitors in the television industry. Some of the men in Sheila's life. Sheila wasn't a very nice person, so the list seems to grow rather than shrink as the four women follow leads.

In spite of the serious nature of the crimes committed in RELATIONSHIPS, I found it to be (for the most part) a light-hearted romp through the craziness of the L.A. television world. DiLucchio has a way of conveying the nastiest of emotions and still leaving the reader with a good feeling about what has happened. The characters are believable, when it would be so easy to stereotype them. I believe that DiLucchio plays fair with the reader, in that all the clues are there if one is paying attention. I wasn't, and didn't see the ending coming.
My one complaint, and it's a fairly minor one given that RELATIONSHIPS is less than 200 pages long, concerns the lack of sub-plots. It would have been a better book with more complexity, but it is still eminently readable.

4 out of 5 stars A humorous mystery.......2006-02-15

How many times have you read a mystery only to figure out before you are half way through the book who did it? That will not be a problem with Relationships Can Be Murder. Jane DiLucchio keeps you completely in the dark until the last minute as to the identity of the murderer is and in the process tells a story that is often humorous. You have to like Dee DelVale. She really cannot help it that she has no idea what she is doing as she tries to be a detective.

Dee DelVale is not really looking for trouble. She finds her life as a teacher generally fulfilling and she has a large circle of friends to keep her busy with various activities. True, she is trying to recover from a bout of lunacy when she had a torrid affair with Sheila Shelbourne, the anchor of the local evening news, and destroyed the relationship with her partner Evie, the true love of her life. And she is humiliated by the fact that Sheila only used her as one of her many quickly passing fancies and then dumped her. And that becomes part of the problem because someone decides to bash Sheila's head in. Despite having a long list of suspects, the police make it clear early on that they are convinced that Dee is the murderer, though she cannot understand why. Well, there is the fact that she was at Sheila's apartment around the time she was killed. And, of course, Dee lied about it....and got caught in the lie by the police. Dee finds herself suspended from her job with the police determined to arrest her for the crime and no apparent way to stop the process; however, Dee has friends who believe in her. There is her best friend Tully, who is the equivalent of a lesbian "lady killer," has never met a woman who could resist her charms and immediately develops a huge crush on the lead detective Quinn, a woman who makes Sgt. Joe Friday from the old Dragnet series seem jovial. While Tully tries to make a move on Quinn, she convinces Dee that they are going to have to solve the murder themselves before the police have her convicted. Felicia is the makeup woman who kept Sheila looking beautiful and knows all of the dirty secrets and failed affairs at the TV station. She is in love with Jenny, who appears not to notice her and is concealing a secret of her own. Well, actually two. Tully decides to play Sherlock Holmes to her three Dr. Watsons, though sometimes they come closer to resembling the four Stooges. Attempts on Dee's life remind them however that they are dealing with a deadly opponent.

Jane DiLucchio proves to be an accomplished storyteller. She moves between humor and seriousness at just the right tempo. The reader is not allowed to forget that there is a deadly person involved in this story while enjoying some of the situations that Dee and her friends find themselves in. DiLucchio also provides a rather long list of people who could have done the killing, keeping them all viable suspects right up until the end, and the true killer actually turns out to be a surprise. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read and the pages pass before you realize it.

Marlene? Serenity? Oops. This excerpt isn't from DiLucchio's book. (Check www.janedilucchio.com for the genuine excerpt. The one about Dee, Tully, Felicia, Jenny, and Evie.) Jane uses language, irony, and relational insights with skill, besides being consistently amusing and an appreciator of a good story. So I look forward to the arrival of her book on my porch. I've been assured that Amazon does send the correct one.

Great book from this first time author. The characters in this book were so "real," which made it easy to relate to their perspective circumtances. Filled with mystery and humor all rolled into one. What a fun read!

5 out of 5 stars Now this was a hot romance!.......2007-02-07

All in this series were great romantic reads. Dominic had some significant issues to deal with being half gypsy. Catherine is just the temprest that will take ahold of his heart and the passion will melt the wall he has around his heart. I absolutely loved this book. It was full of emotion and also had a bit of a mystery involved with who was trying to kill Catherine. These two were both passionate individuals that were perfect for each other.

I really love this book, especially the second part in England after they met again. Catherine has such spirit I adore her. It broke my heart at the scene in the gazebo. It's so touching. I am going to look for a copy as my own.

5 out of 5 stars One of the books that got me hooked on romance!.......2003-08-28

I began reading romance novels almost two years ago. I have always been a voracious reader and shunned romance writing - assuming it would be all formula and no real story. Gypsy Lord was one of the first romance books I read and it greatly influenced my decision to begin reading romance novels seriously. Since then, I have discovered a wonderful array of excellent romance writers and have enjoyed this genre tremendously. Recently I picked up Gypsy Lord again to see if it still seemed that same rich and sexy story I recalled. I was not disappointed. It was as great on this second read as I had remembered it.

Dominic Edgemont, the Marquess of Gravenwold, is half English and half gypsy. His mother had raised him in the gypsy camps of France until his noble English father claimed him at the age of eleven. Since that time, most of Dominic's life had been spent at his father's English estate or in English schools. Dominic hated this new English existence and hated his father for deserting his mother. Although Dominic was still allowed to see his mother, the visits were infrequent and short. Gradually he had come to accept the English way of life. Although he was his father's bastard, Dominic was his heir to a vast fortune and estate. He is considered a dark, intriguing man among London society. It is rumored that he may have some gypsy heritage but he is still considered a most desirable man. Dominic rarely attends functions of the ton but is always a source of great speculation when he does. The ladies, always hoping to get a look at the mysterious, handsome man, wished Dominic would honor them with his attention. Dominic, however, seldom noticed any lady and remained an enigmatic and fascinating personage.

Catherine Barrington, Countess of Arondale, is a young noble woman entrenched in the social activities of the London ton. She is one of the wealthiest heiresses in England and knows she must marry and produce an heir. However, she is not very interested in marriage. Of course, Catherine is highly sought after in the marriage market. One night at a social event, she hears of the mysterious nobleman with the rumored gypsy heritage, and tries in vain to get a glimpse of him. He is much the talk among the ladies and Catherine wishes she could meet him. Within a few days of this party, Catherine is kidnapped, sold as a slave, and is taken to France. She lives a cruel life, beaten and abused, and is eventually sold to a gypsy.

Dominic, now twenty-eight years old, is spending several months with his mother's gypsy caravan in France. Since reaching adulthood, Dominic had chosen to spend these months each year with the gypsies of his childhood. Now maturity was forcing Dominic to accept his dual heritage and leave one behind. Although he loved the gypsy life, he knew he must now live in England year round. His father was close to death and he knew his responsibilities would require much of his time. Dominic hears a woman being beaten one night and runs to protect her. He discovers a beautiful young lady, obviously with no gypsy heritage, and in his attempt to keep her from harm, buys her from her gypsy owner. Dominic, of course, has just purchased Catherine, knowing nothing of her English heritage, and the love story begins. He is very attracted to her and informs her of his desire for her. Although he has saved her from a beating and worse, his expression of desire insults Catherine. She has changed from a quiet noble lady to a seemingly viscous and confrontational woman. She will not allow Dominic near her and their battle of the wills is one for the record books. I got a little tired of Catherine's hatefulness toward Dominic since he had rescued her from the whip of an enraged gypsy, paid a fortune for her, and treated her kindly when all other gypsies regarded her only with hostility and suspicion. But if she had not been so willful with Dominic, the physical aspect of their relationship would have begun earlier and somehow part of the story would have been missing. Although Dominic doesn't consider himself to be a gentleman, he is gracious and polite (mostly) to Catherine.

This book is almost divided in half. Most of the first portion of the book takes place in the gypsy camps in France. The second half of the book occurs in England. The eventual meeting of Dominic and Catherine in England, when each discovers the other's title and position in society, is priceless. The chemistry between these two is fantastic and covers nearly each page during the last half of the book. The sensual scenes rate about a 3.5 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines) but don't let that mislead you. This is one of those books that doesn't need specific descriptions of the sensual scenes to produce the chemistry between the leads.

Kat Martin continues to be one of my favorite romance authors. Her books are never shallow and she has the ability to write typical romance plot lines and make them seem totally atypical. I have now read eleven Martin books and I would give at least six of them a five star review. Only one of the eleven seemed weak to me. If you have not tried Kat Martin books, I recommend that you begin with some of her older novels. She has a very large backlist and nearly all of her "out of publication" books are available online for reasonable prices.

    5 out of 5 stars What a great stroy!.......2003-05-23

This is a very entertaining and moving tale of how badly love can go wrong, and how quickly love can make it all right again. I truly loved this novel. Catherine and Dominic are both head strong, stubborn, but also very passionate and very much in love. It takes a very long time for the both of them to realize just how much they love each other, and because of their stubborn pride, and they constant misunderstandings their love almost doesn't come into being. They both fight to keep their current lives under the control they feel they need, and struggle to stay apart from each other as if they know that in some way a life together would bring an end to all that they had promised themselves.

I found myself wantnig the best for both characters and scolding them for being so stubborn, but with that in mind I can never doubt Ms. Martin's ability to make a character true and believable. This was a book that kept me reading hour after hour and wanting to know what would happen next. I enjoyed it throughly, and would recommend it to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but Veryan has written better.......2002-05-06

When Lucian St. Clair comes home from service, he comes home with a heavy heart. The woman who had stolen his heart was no longer a part of his life. As an English gentleman, he should marry Deirdre Breckenridge and therefore continue the family line. It would be easy if only he hadn't already fallen for an enchanting gypsy girl...
I have read Veryan before, and I am a dedicated fan. I searched for this book, and I was excited when it came in the mail. But after I had read the book, I must say I was a little disappointed. Lucian and Deirdre were fine as romantic leads, but having read other Veryan books, I found that they seemed unrealistic. Deirdre was annoying and pathetic in her attempts for Lucian's attention, and Lucian seemed to succeed at everything. There was nothing the noble hero could not do, from racing horses to winning all the girls' hearts. Such perfection can be a little irritating, and the better and more noble he was, the less human he seemed. The other characters were more fun and believable, and I couldn't help but wish they had appeared more. I especially thought Jeremy and Amanda were cute. I'm glad I read the book, because it cleared up some confusion I had about situations in other Veryan books (Sanguinet Saga), but I wouldn't read this book more than once.

            Book Description

This book deals with prejudice, specifically the neglected area of prejudice towards Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers. It describes a problem-solving approach at both practitioner and strategic levels that can overcome prejudice in many of its forms and help achieve greater social justice.

John Coxhead has drawn on his extensive research with practitioners, strategic workers and the communities to highlight the issues for and about Travellers. He provides an analytical but practical approach that is also a toolkit for those working in public services to improve service delivery.

As the definitive text for understanding the approaches and strategies by which prejudice towards a certain community can be effectively tackled, the book will be indispensable to practitioners in public services, particularly criminal justice and policing. It will also interest sociologists and the communities themselves.

Multiple Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge takes readers on a fifty-million-year trip to a future where humanity's fate will be decided in a dangerous game of high-tech survival. In this taut thriller, a Hugo finalist for Best Novel, nobody knows why there are only three hundred humans left alive on the Earth fifty million years from now. Opinion is fiercely divided on whether to settle in and plant the seed of mankind anew, or to continue using high-energy stasis fields, or "bobbles," in venturing into the future. When somebody is murdered, it's obvious someone has a secret he or she is willing to kill to preserve. The murder intensifies the rift between the two factions, threatening the survival of the human race. It's up to 21st century detective Wil Brierson, the only cop left in the world, to find the culprit, a diabolical fiend whose lust for power could cause the utter extinction of man.Filled with excitement and adventure, Vinge's tense SF puzzler will satisfy readers with its sense of wonder and engaging characters, one of whom is a murderer with a unique modus operandi.

An interesting murder mystery. Using statis bobbles, time can pass at a
different rate for those outside. Therefore, being kicked out of one
effectively strands you from your fellows, forever. Is this murder?
Millions of years after an event, a police officer must try and work
out why this happened and who did it.

5 out of 5 stars A superb time travel mystery.......2006-12-28

After hearing Vernor Vinge speak recently, it was no surprise to me that Marooned In Realtime is a thoughtful, intelligent novel. Science fiction that spans great periods of time is often forced to throw characterization overboard as the scope overwhelms individuals (e.g. Stapledon's otherwise excellent Last and First Men reads more like a treatise on the future than a novel). Vinge's tale of a small group of time travelers living in the ruins of a post Singularity Earth is epic in scope but at the core is a compelling personal tale of companions lost in the distant past and hope for the future. This book is an underappreciated classic and one of the best science fiction novels I have read in some time.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books in any genre.......2006-09-07

I first read Marooned In Realtime when it was serialised in the American Analog [sic!] magazine. I enjoyed it immensely - the artwork was tantalising, too.

I have now read this book a number of times and it is one I return to from time to time, it has become an old friend. I will read it again sometime. I now have the combined novel - Across Realtime, which included The Peace War and Marooned In Realtime - both novels are excellent and worth ten times any Orson Scott Card novel!

Many ideas and feelings are explored in Marooned in Realtime. The conversations between Will and the various people he interviews about the "murder" are informative, thought provoking and full of wonder. His conversation with Della Lu, the Chinese space traveller and former cop for the Peace Authority, is the most interesting and moving. I well remember Della's phrase, spoke in a quiet voice: "Intelligent life is a very rare development." Her story is so credible, it seems as if Vinge has actually found out about the universe from a private, undisclosed source.

The speculations, mainly from Della Lu, about the Singularity are worth reading. This book, as far as I can tell, presents one of the most interesting and credible scenarios vis-à-vis the Singularity I have yet read. Only David Brin's short story, "Stones of Significance" deals with the post-Singularity are well, or, perhaps, better.

If you like the sense of wonder, thought provoking ideas and a damn good story, then Marooned In Realtime is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Murder Mystery Millions of Years in the Making.......2006-06-04

This is not quite a sequel to THE PEACE WAR but it is related and uses at least one of the same characters, Della Lu, but it is independent and can be read by itself. The technology, however, derives from that book and a knowledge of its story helps a bit.

In THE PEACE WAR, a government was able to impose a worldwide peace by imposing a "bobble" on anything that might be threatening. This can be taken to mean anything that threatens the peace or anything hat threatens the power of the peace authority. A bobble is merely a bubble, using a trick of physics to place everything inside in suspension until the bobble bursts. It is a perfect protection. That which is in a bobble can survive even in the sun itself, as long as the bobble does not burst while in the sun. Those within are protected and ignorant of all outside; those outside have no access to that within. All one can do is wait for the bobble to burst.

With the overthrow of the peace authority, technology kept racing ahead. Some time after the 23rd century, though, something happened. All the inhabitants of earth were gone with no clue as to what happened, although theories abound. Those coming out of suspension as the bobbles burst have no clue and there might not even be enough of them to make humanity's continued existence assured. One couple conceives of a grand scheme to suspend everyone until all of the bobbles are burst and then try to repopulate the world. It barely has a chance of working and those chances plunge when someone manages to murder one of the new power brokers. It is no ordinary murder, it was merely the failure to include the woman in the bobbles. She died of old age, alone in the world, while millennia passed.

One of those who has been rescued is a cop. He is tasked with trying to solve the murder of a case that is literally millions of years old. His only help is a series of journals the victim left behind. The catch is that the murderer does not want to be caught and can easily destroy anyone who interferes. Not everyone believes in the grand rescue scheme. To make matters worse, the cops is wrongly though to have raped the victim the night before the crime.

It's a good murder mystery and the technology is interesting to read about. Unfortunately, mysteries are not my favorite. Somebody who does really like them, though, should enjoy this book, especially if also a science fiction fan.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the FUTURE!.......2006-03-27

A mystery, a tale of survival, the government of New Mexico, the Peacers, bobbles and millions of years in the future. Tinkers, low tech, high tech, ungovs and statists. Wil W. Brierson, a police detective from the 21st Century, had been shanghaied - forced into a bobble against his will. Now he, and the last remains of mankind and culture, were doing all they could to survive.
And one of the most important persons on Earth, the one with the plan to save them all, is murdered. So after millions of years he gets a new job. To solve the crime.
Set in a Earth far in the future, with advanced techonolgy, interesting characters, realistic problems and new animals the book is a great read. Dogthings, social spiders and fishermonkeys remind me of a Dougal Dixon book. And as Vernor Vinge is a fan of Mr. Dixon there is a reason for that.
I don't have the Peace War but I do have the short story The Ungoverned in which Wil stops the NM invasion of Kansas so I did know some of the background of his character and why the New Mexicans dislike him. This book is just great with the first book. In other words, it pretty much stands on its own.

                              Book Description

This joyously inspirational Spiritual book presents a set of beliefs about the meaning and purpose of life from a Cosmic Perspective that combines Twelve Step Recovery Principles with Ancient Metaphysical Truths. It explains why a New Age has dawned in human consciousness on planet Earth and explores the interrelationship between subjects that range from the Bible, Buddha, and Jesus to quantum physics, molecular biology, and AIDS. The belief system the book is based upon is exemplified by this quote from The Dance of Wounded Souls: "We are not sinful, shameful human creatures who have to somehow earn Spirituality. We are Spiritual Beings having a human experience. We are here to experience and learn, to Touch and to feel." The author, a therapist who specializes in codependence/inner child healing, not only explains the big picture of how we are all ONE, part of one Cosmic energy interaction that is unfolding perfectly, he also offers insights into how the individual being can lovingly change their relationship with self and life in order to transform their human experience into a much more enjoyable adventure. This is a life-changing, life-affirming book.

The Title and info about this book was totally misleading......as this is a book about a radical philosiphy that is of no psychological or cultural or spiritual value, and makes no real reference to "wounded souls" at all unless it lumps all of humanity into that category.

I have listened to this incredible audio book. I know that my journey in recovery, will not be the same again. The information presented in Robert Burney's book, is what EVERY soul needs to hear - it is the Truth. It certainly awakens me to MY Truth. I highly recommend this to anyone, who is seeking to grow and heal; who is in trouble of any sort, or who is just seeking to explore their spiritual origins. If I had the money, I would buy this 3-CD set for everyone I love...

Robert Burney is a pioneer. His message breaks through to the core of the human condition over, and over, and over again. I found Robert's message at a time in my life when I needed it the most. It put some very big pieces of my personal puzzle(ment) together for me in a single resource. His message gave me practical hope and began to establish a new and deeper perspective in my daily life. He is not a "guru." He is an emotionally honest man who is conveying his truth without pretense. I believe he's been given the gift of assembling some very important Truths into one practical spiritual message that addresses the human condition. Anyone, regardless of their particular belief system, who considers his message will walk away better equipped to Live their life. I highly recommend this book. I bought the tapes too.

I've read the book and am now ordering the cassette version. I've read other books on codependence but this one has a softer, more wholistic approach that I found quite satisfying.

I'll also note that another reviewer stated that if you are a Christian to skip this book. I am a Christian and I found the author to be quite spiritual and inclusive of all faiths/beliefs.

I like that he discusses many relationships, not just romantic ones, and doesn't focus as highly on alcoholism as some other resources do.

If you've ever found yourself habitually giving more than you receive, or being drawn to needy people so you can take care of them, this little book will be a powerful tool as you rechannel your energy into healthier pursuits.

I bought this tape because I have been attending CODA meetings and wanted to get a new perspective on codependence. Robert Burney more than delivers in this audio tape. He points out that AA and its spin-off twelve-step programs are really part of a spiritual awakening whose time has come. Burney uses the term "outer dependence" to point out that the root of codependence is relying on anything out there (jobs, education, friends, that special someone, money, power, and so on) to make us feel better. The author challenges us to look at things inside out and look inward for a sense of well being and true value. Burney talks about healing the inner child and how important that works for a truly healthy sense of well being. The author also challenges us to take a hard look at society and organized religion that programs us to BE CODEPENDENT.

Burney also shares his thought about the mystery called life. He presents many wonderful insights about living our lives and achieving balance or wholeness. His ideas agree with Carl Jung's notion that wholeness (and NOT perfectness) is what we humans need to be at inner peace.

I feel that this audio tape is a wonderful challenge for everyone who is asking questions and who is struggling to make sense of life. Burney has a lot to share. I have benefited from this tape greatly, as it gave me a valuable insight on codependence and how to seriously disempower it. I have decided not to attend the CODA meetings anymore as these 12-step programs themselves can and often do become a crutch and a new more subtle addiction. The audio tape became a strategic tool to empower me over my codependence.

This audio tape is a must for you if you are a seeker!

3 out of 5 stars If you are a Christian, this material is not for you........2002-12-15

I believe that Robert Burney is sincere in his desire to help people who are having problems with codependent issues. His ideas and philosophy is well presented and probably very helpful to non-christians who are struggling with life's tougher issues.
However if you have any love Jesus at all you'll likely find this material offensive. (I'm no saint, believe me) So if you are christian, leave this selection behind and pick up your Bible instead. The answers really are in there after all.
