5 out of 5 stars This writer has never disappointed me yet.......2007-08-21

I was looking for older releases from Mr. Sheldon and picked up this book that I had somehow missed before. There's a reason why they call him the master of this genre. A superbly entertaining story from beginning to end. The action is fast-paced and held my full attention as if this story was written yesterday instead of 13 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Some Things Last Forever.......2007-04-06

Great story of three women doctors in their residency at San Francisco's Embarcadero County Hospital - Paige Taylor, cardiac surgeon, Kate Hunter, African-American neurosurgeon and Honey Taft, wanna-be nurse, forced into being a doctor (internist) by her well-to-do family and not really good at it at all. Honey does find that if she uses her female charms on the elders of her profession, it becomes a sure-fire method to get through medical school and then unto residency! The story begins with Paige Taylor being tried for murder after answering a patient's request to be put out of his pain. It then flashes back five years to when the women first met and decided to become roommates. Sheldon takes us through the relationships of men vs. women doctors. One storyline involves Dr. Ken Mallory and his mucho attitude, betting thousands of dollars with his male peers that he could take on Dr. Kate Hunter. Enter Kate Hunter, brutally raped and abused at a young age and totally rejecting the opposite sex. Dr. Mallory sees Kate, a dedicated, hard-working doctor and loving sister, as the ultimate challenge. In my opinion, Sidney Sheldon has done it again. He totally captures the hard work and grueling hours residents must endure and the dedication that goes hand and hand with their profession. The book held my interest and lived up to the standards of this excellent author's reputation.

3 out of 5 stars Hospital drama.......2006-05-01

Three young women meet as internists in a large San Francisco hospital, and agree to share a flat.. Paige who is interested in cardiac surgery, Kat, a beautiful black woman who wants to specialize in neurosurgery, and Honey, a daughter of the South who really wanted to be a nurse, to fulfill her need to nurture. Honey is the youngest in a family of achievers who belittled her ambition to be a nurse, saying that members of their family always aimed for the top and that she had to be a doctor or nothing. Unequipped with the brains to really rise to the top, she learns to use sex to achieve her purposes and sleeps her way through high school, college and medical school. Kay has battled her way from the ghetto and is determined not to let the fact that she was raped as a young girl, with a resulting pregnancy and abortion, prevent her from achieving her goals. Paige had grown up in underdeveloped countries as the daughter of a World Health Organisation doctor who eventually gave his life in the cause of helping the underpriveleged. The hospital where they are all doing their residencies contains the usual quota of nerds, sleazes and go-getters and the story details lots of medical emergencies for those readers who love this sort of thing. It would probably make an admirable soapie or mini series featuring lots of beautiful people and is an ok read for when you're in the mood for an action book which is not at all brain taxing.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, from cover to cover!.......2006-02-26

I have never read Sidney Sheldon before, and I don't know if this book is typical of his writing style, but I can honestly say it was horrendous. When I finished reading the book, I came here out of curiosity to find out what others had to say about it. I couldn't believe the glowing reviews on this site!
Sheldon writes like an elementary school student. He attempts to develop his characters by say "Paige was a tough woman" instead of putting Paige into a situation and demonstrating her toughness. The reader is just supposed to accept his little facts about each character without any evidence.
The courtroom scenes are lame and overdramatic - people yelling "Objection!" every couple of paragraphs, and the judge engaging in unbelievable dialogue such as Judge: "Did you see a tent?" Lawyer: "I beg your pardon?" Judge: "You're not going to turn my courtroom into a circus!" Groan...
The situations in the hospital are equally ridiculous, with every patient, doctor, intern and orderly trying their darndest to get the three main characters (all female doctors, gasp!) into bed. It's so contrived, it hurts to read it.
The whole book is full of lame dialogue, and the earlier-print version that I read also contained several editing bloopers that made me believe that Sheldon's own editor didn't get through it. There was one part where two paragraphs were repeated word-for-word, one right after the other in an obvious editing error. How could that go unnoticed?
I picked up the books because of the rave reviews on the covers from the Associated Press, the New York Post, etc. I asked myself several times, "Did these people read the same book I am reading?" It just didn't seem possible.
It's true that the book is a quick read, which is fortunate, because when I finished it I was sorry to have lost the couple hours it took away from my life. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Female Doctors. A Fantasy?.......2005-12-29

Some things never change. For example, the society's perception that certain jobs are for men. Female mechanical engineers are a rarity and who remembers the last woman to run for president in the US. (OK. Commander-in-Chief is showing on your local ABC affiliates.)
In Nothing Lasts Forever, Sidney Sheldon returns to his familiar role - writing about beautiful women caught up in the violence of the world around them.
Paige Taylor, Kat Taylor and Honey Taft are incoming residents who meet on their first day at Embarcadero County Hospital. They move in together, endure the long hours, finally having their lives changed by the relationships they keep and the secrets they hide.
Sheldon packs an engrossing read around the lives of these three doctors. The writing is fluid, the plot simple, and the characters likable. Though the ending left something to be desired, this is nonetheless an engrossing read that mixes a murder investigation, hospital politics and sexual conquest.
There are several things to think about while reading this novel. One is what should male doctors do to make female counterparts feel less threatened? Just as interns make joke about cadavers to relieve tension, could males be doing same (or are most as horny as Sheldon shows them to be)?
Another is the role of euthanasia in society. After the Teri Schiavo debacle, would we want a lax approach to mercy killing or would we rather have our doctors maintain the moral injunction of the Hippocratic oath to refrain from giving "a deadly drug to anybody who asks for it."

While the heroines might lack the drive of Jennifer Parker in Rage of Angels or the innocence of Catherine Douglas in Memories of Midnight, Sheldon's work assures that though nothing lasts forever, some things, like a good novel, should.

5 out of 5 stars It's the source for "Die Hard", but you'll be surprised..........2005-01-04

A grim, more bleak version of what you might have been initially exposed to in the first "Die Hard" film, Roderick Thorp's "Nothing Lasts Forever" was a pleasure to read.

There are enough differences to keep movie-viewers off balance, and the writing is tough and terse, befitting it's hero, Joe Leland (not John McClane).

The plot similarities are as such: it opens on a plane from NYC to LAX. He's visiting an estranged family member in L.A., who works in a high rise and they're having a Christmas party when the building gets taken over by terrorists. There's a cop on the outside, there's the cop's "superior" who's not the most competent, the big bad guy is Anton (not Hans) Gruber...but...

...the tone is really quite different. It's a bit more introspective, withe Leland feeling himself consumed by hatred toward his enemies. When he takes out a terrorist, you get an impression of how it affects him. They're not casual. And as he "gets better" at it, it starts to change his thinking. It's pretty interesting stuff.

The media presence is handled much more seriously, not as a comic plot device/aside in the film. I thought it was much more realistic...the way media can manipulate the real story, and also how those people actually involved in the news story can manipulate the media right back. There's a few clever sequences that wouldn't have fit in the film, but are nevertheless pretty cool.

I'm withholding the numerous plot differences between the two, as I hope you'll discover them for yourselves, but as a teaser, the hero is going to visit his daughter, not his wife...

The film's screenplay, I think, is a masterpiece of action film writing. Good dialogue, nice exposition, decent plot twists. But the book is not that story; it's waaaay different. It has a different bent, and works equally well.

Thorp writes action well, so many scenes play out vividly in your imagination, without the help of the movie's imagery.

There are enough differences that I wasn't sure how the book was going to end, and you won't be sure either. Prepare for an unexpectedly pleasurable reading experience...

5 out of 5 stars A must read for "Die Hard"fans.......2003-06-04

The book "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp is a must read for "Die Hard" fans. This book is about a cop named Joe Leland (in "Die Hard", John McLane)who goes to Los Angeles to visit his daughter Stephanie (in "Die Hard", his wife Holly) at the Klaxon Oil Building(in "Die Hard" the Nakatomi building)where Stephanie works. At the building, terrorists take over and Joe must go around the building killing the terrorists. This was the inspiration for the Bruce Willis movie "Die Hard"(1988). I'm a huge fan of the "Die Hard" movies, and if you are, too, buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Darker and grittier than the movie........2001-12-29

Die Hard (The Movie) fans may be intrested in reading this book, but beware, there are some major differences. One disappointing difference is the absence of Hans Gruber. The colorful mastermind from the movie is no where to be seen in this book. In fact there is no snappy banter to be found because the terrorists don't speak English. The realism factor is higher in this book too, not that Die Hard wasn't believable, but when you puke after realizing you've killed someone, you're talking real life. Other differences are abound in this book. You should read it to see them all. It's entertaining, and Thorpe is a talented writer, but this book is not quite as entertaining as the movie. Still, don't let that discourage you, I throughly believe that books hold more depth, detail and darkness than Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars One more time, books are better than movies.......2000-10-06

I'm a great fan of Die Hard movies, and I have tried to find the novel that based the first movie for years. After reading it, I have to say that Thorp made a great book. The main character Joe Leland (John McClane at the screen) is now more closer to a human. He doubts and suffer as anyone of us. And the book adds something very interesting for the reader. We see all the action since the perspective of Leland, so we can see how he feels about all the stuff. Obviously, a movie can do that. The script by Steven E. De Souza has selected some of the more important parts of the book, and be careful, not all the things on the screen are in this pages. Do a favour to yourself, buy this book. If you liked Die Hard, you'll enjoy this book a lot. If you don't like action movies it's a wonderful way to spenda few hours reading something different.

5 out of 5 stars Seen the movie? Read the book........2000-01-29

First of all, I should probably say that Die Hard is one of my favorite movies of all time. For me, reading the book it was based on was a no brainer, but I even recommend it to people who aren't fans of the movie. While retaining the same basic "terrorists seize building" plot of the film, the novel is actually very different. It involves a much older hero (Joe Leland) who is desperately trying to save his daughter and two grandchildren, rather than his wife. The whole thing is a little more realistic and plausible than the movie. For instance, Leland's daughter, Stephanie, is not your average, ethically flawless, damsel in distress. She is obviously not a perfect person. More than once, Joe finds himself thinking about all the mistakes she has made in her life. The book contains variations on all of the familiar stunts and supporting characters (minus the two arrogant FBI agents) that really helped to make the movie great. The action sequences are quite suspenseful, especially for a book. What really enhances the suspense is Leland's vulnerability. He doesn't kill without emotion, and he's definitely not physically invincible. In a few parts it really seems like he's done for. Nothing Lasts Forever is an overall great book that is extremely entertaining and hard to put down. My only major complaint is that since the entire story follows Leland's point of view, you only come into contact with the head antagonist (Gruber) when Joe does. As a result, the character of Gruber is not nearly as memorable as Alan Rickman's portrayal in Die Hard. To wrap up, if you liked Die Hard it would be a mistake not to pick up this book, and even if you weren't crazy about the film, Nothing Lasts Forever is different enough to warrant a strong recommendation.

I ordered Desiring Italy to read while my husband and I travelled in Italy this year. I had hoped that it would be as interesting as The Italians by Luigi Barzini or Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the book; it did not meet my expectations or hold my interest so I abandoned it in our hotel room.

This starts out a little oddly, with Hope dodging Franco, the charming, hunky Italian Policio. It becomes clearer as the story progresses that Hope's had some horrible experiences with law enforcement types who used their badges to belittle people and made her life hell.
Franco finally meets Hope and he discovers weird things are happening at Hope's home, which she borrows from her friend. The friend runs an English instruction school in Italy, which has some priceless broken syntax with these gentlemen trying to learn our nutty tongue and mangling it quite well. And the friend? Well, she's hospitalized and that's why Hope's even IN Italy to start with, she's dropped everything and moved to Italy to help her bud. Good trade for the inconvenience, though, since she finds the love of her life in the suave Franco.
I really liked him and meeting his Mama, who wanted her boy hitched and gave Hope a nudge with some style tips. It's not as if Hope had to have a make-over to catch Franco's attention: she's a blonde and that's rare in Southern Italy, but Ms. Rice aggravates poor old Franco by opening the eyes of EVERYONE who gets a glimpse of our girl once she gets a hair cut and some nifty clothes.
There are, as previously reviewed, some hot sex scenes and one in the police station that should have completely cured Hope's phobia about law enforcement. Yowza! Then again, in order to get a, uh, second dose of Franco's revolutionary treatment, I would have pleaded faintness, shortness of breath, dizziness and any manner of other symptoms.
Which brings me to another point: Ms. Rice can and does write strong Alpha men: police, military and ex-military men. Now, she should branch out a bit and write about at least one doctor. That's a natural for a potential love story. Romances started out with doctors and nurses or doctors and their patients, but it's not as popular these days. I have high hopes of what Ms. Rice could do with a man with a good bedside manner.
This is a previously published book that Ms. Rice has embroidered upon for fans of her books: "Midnight Man," "Midnight Run," and "Midnight Angel." While I totally love those stories, you must check out "Woman on the Run" as well. She's not written a bad book yet.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but I like her Midnight stories a bit better.......2007-01-03

Franco is wonderful, Hope is a bit stupid at first and gets into trouble easily and thoughtlessly. The sex is very soon after they meet (the day of if I recall correctly, just as in Midnight Run but the circumstances are different here and dont work as well for me) but it is an erotic book so thats to be expected I guess. 5 out of 5 stars A thrilling well written romantic story.......2006-11-10

This is one of the earlier books written by a very talented author. Lisa Marie Rice. The heroine goes to Italy to help her friend run her English school while the friend is recovering in the hospital following a hit and run accident. Once she arrives different strange things begin to happen which eventually put her in danger. The police chief finds himself very drawn to her as he tries to uncover the mystery of what is really going on before she gets killed.

The pages get steamy when the two people become romantically involved. Ms Rice knows how to write very erotic love scenes that will have you looking for your own mate to let off a little steam.

Her stories including this one always have a likely alpha male hero who hides a loving heart under a gruff exterior. Unlike some heros her's always respect and admire the heroine. I strongly recommend this book and her "Midnight" series.

                4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it.........2006-01-24

Great read. First book I've read by Rice but now I'll be checking out her other ones :)

Timothy Zahn is the master of the Star Wars novel. His trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command) did almost as much as the movie trilogy's re-release to create new interest in Luke, Leia, and Han Solo. Specter of the Past is the first of a new series, The Hand of Thrawn. Princess Leia is trying desperately to hold the loose coalition of interests known as the New Republic together long enough to see the evil Empire finally vanquished. But in a stunning setback, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker discover that the pirate ships raiding New Republic transports are staffed with clones under the command of someone who claims to be Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Empire's most powerful warlord, believed dead for 10 years. Thrawn's plan for destroying the fragile New Republic seems well on the way to completion--unless Han, Leia, and Luke can stop it.

                    Book Description

From Hugo Award-winning author Timothy Zahn, whose unprecedented bestselling trilogy continued the saga of George Lucas's blockbuster films and became a landmark in the history of science fiction publishing, comes a dramatic new chapter in the greatest science fiction epic ever told.  Now Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo must battle to safeguard the fledgling New Republic from a dead Imperial warlord--and from itself.

Once the unquestioned master of countless solar systems, the Empire is tottering on the brink of total collapse.  Once commanding an invincible armada of Star Destroyers, its fleet has been reduced to a skeleton force.  Day by day, neutral systems are rushing to join the New Republic coalition.  But with the end of the war in sight, the New Republic has fallen victim to its own success.  An unwieldy alliance of races and traditions, the confederation now finds itself riven by age-old animosities.

Princess Leia struggles against all odds to hold the New Republic together.  But she has powerful enemies.  An ambitious Moff Disra leads a conspiracy to divide the uneasy coalition with an ingenious plot to blame the Bothans for a heinous crime that could lead to genocide and civil war.  At the same time, Luke Skywalker, along with Lando Calrissian and Talon Karrde, pursues a mysterious group of pirate ships whose crews consist of clones.  And then comes the most startling news of all: Grand Admiral Thrawn--believed to be dead for ten years--is reported alive.  The most cunning and ruthless warlord in Imperial history has seemingly returned to lead the Empire to triumph.

As Han and Leia try to prevent the unraveling of the New Republic in the face of this fearful and inexplicable threat from the past, Luke sets out to track down the rogue pirate ships.  To do so, he will team up with Mara Jade, with whom he will share his growing mastery of the Force and the ever-present threat of the dark side.  All the while, lurking in the shadows is the enigmatic Major Tierce, a disciple of Emperor Palpatine, sharing his long-dead master's lust for power, schooled in the devious stratagems of Thrawn himself, and armed with his own dark plans for the New Republic and the Empire.

Specter of the Past marks the triumphant return of Timothy Zahn to the celebrated Star Wars(r) universe in a novel that brings together all the trademark action, suspense, startling revelations, and brilliant spectacle worthy of the name Star Wars.

Timothy Zahn is one of science fiction's most popular voices, known for his ability to tell very human stories against a well-researched background of future science and technology.  He won the Hugo Award for his novella Cascade Point and is the author of sixteen science fiction novels, including the bestselling Star Wars trilogy Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command, the novels Conquerors' Pride, Conquerors' Heritage, and Conquerors' Legacy, and three collections of short fiction.  Timothy Zahn lives in Oregon.

2 out of 5 stars The Blah of Thrawn.......2007-05-22

I put the book down about half-way through it because I just couldn't get into it anywhere near as much as the Thrawn Trilogy. I realize that this book is probably just a lot of setting-up for the 2nd book, but I decided that I'd rather read other books instead of be bored on the way. It probably would have been better if Zahn had stuck with his original idea of one book instead of making it a duology.

Instead of this book, I highly recommend the following 5-star novels:

                    Cloak of Deception (Star Wars)
Shadow Hunter (Star Wars: Darth Maul)
Labyrinth of Evil (Star Wars, Episode III Prequel Novel)
Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Shadows of the Empire (Star Wars)

                    5 out of 5 stars Zahn's triumph.......2006-06-13

I really, really enjoyed Tim Zahn's retur to the Star Wars universe, especially since this actually makes political sense. Though I enjoyed the Thrawn trilogy, Thrawn himself was rather annoying, as I am sure that he was to Luke, Leia et al, since he was so good at making their lives miserable. But he was just so omniscient that he was a tad over the top, a Fu Manchu from the Galaxy far, far away. This time, he is just being imitated, with humorous results. Mara Jade is back, too, and nobody does Mara like Zahn does. I don't think the other authors that touch on her really understand her, at all, least of all B. Hambly. Highly recommended.

                    4 out of 5 stars A worthy "follow-up" to the Thrawn trilogy.......2005-08-19

I really liked this book. Zahn did a great job leading you along. You couldn't wait to start the second book in the duology A Vision of the Future.Luckily since I didn't get to read it till well after they had both been published I didn't have to wait. This is one of the better Star Wars books out there.

                    2 out of 5 stars boring.......2005-05-18

the irritating writing style continues...unfortunately this time there is no attempt at a storyline and no interesting characters. we don't really need to be informed every time someone has to 'connect to the force', or runs through jedi meditation techniques, etc. it has to be implied at some point really.

5 out of 5 stars Zahn is still the king!!!.......2005-01-26

If you think the Thrawn Trilogy was the best thing ever written in the expanded Star Wars Universe and if you think Andersen's Jedi Academy is the worst then you'll greatly appreciate the addition of the Hand Of Thrawn series. Zahn truelly makes the universe worth expanding again.

                            Book Description

What do your spiritual convictions have to do with traffic jams, job anxiety, reading the newspaper, or arguing with your spouse? Everything, according to Marianne Williamson. It is the way we live in our everyday world that determines the shape of who we are. So Buddhist or Muslim, Christian or Jew, it is the moment when our daughter doesn't make the basketball team, or our best friend lands our dream job, or our business instinct tells us to bury the guy across the boardroom table that tests and builds our living faith.

With an attitude of hope, a call to forgive, a celebration of miracles, and the promise of strength and grace, Williamson helps us find our sacred footing on ordinary ground.

No matter where we are or what we're doing, there is the opportunity to be happy, and to be holy. The large and small difficulties of our days challenge us to open our hearts and minds. And in this book of hours, Marianne Williamson teaches us to ride the currents that lurk in each of those moments of opening to a sea change of the soul.

Marianne Williamson's take on grace, mysticism, miracles, and so forth are an attempt to bring feel good spirituality into life. Williamson's text, A Course in Miracles, is the basis point for her teachings. Everyday grace is one of the more recent hodge podges of spirituality offered in an eclectic mix from Williamson whose mantra of love casts out all fear continues in her theological constructs. The one thing is .... everyday grace is far more simple than it seems. Everyday grace is about being in the flow. Williamson conjures up more feel good spirituality which she is known for.

I bought this book some time ago and never read it. All the hoopla turned me off (you know, Oprah and the like- I DO love Oprah, but she often picks such trying stories). Today I sat down with EveryDay Grace and pretty soon I was looking for a pencil to mark passages I want to find again. WOW. I wasn't expecting this little book to have messages I've been needing to hear. Of course, timing is everything, but I wouldn't pass on this book if you are looking for a way to connect your spiritual life with your everyday life.

3 out of 5 stars High Spirits and Optimism for Our Future.......2006-07-07

Purity of heart will not make us poor. THe exaltation of poverty as a spiritual virtue is of the ego. The ego is the great fault-finder. In 'A Return to Love,' she explains her interpretation of the fairy tale, "The Frog Prince": in this story, a princess kisses a frog and he becomes a prince. We all know that. The great exhorter feels that it reveals the deep psychological connection between our attitudes toward people and their capacity for tranformation. What the kiss signified is the miraculous power of love to create a context in which people naturally blossom into their highest potential.

A miracle worker is an artist of the soul, an artist who exposes the masks we all wear. The reason so many are obsessed with becoming stars is because they're not starring in their own lives. The cosmic spotlight is not pointed at you; it radiates from within you. If we wait for the world's permission to shine, we will never receive it. The dreaded ego doesn't give that permission. The ego's world is based on finite resources.

Love is the essential existential fact. To experience love in ourselves and others is the meaning of life. Love is the intuitive knowledge of our hearts in the forms of kindness, giving, mercy, compassion, peace, joy, acceptance, non-judgment, joining and intimacy. Love is within us. The world we knew as children is still buried within our minds.

Fear is the opposite of love with forms like anger, abuse, pain, greed, addiction, selfishness, obsession, corruption, violence and war. Forgiveness is the key to inner peace because it is the technique by which our thoughts are transformed from fear to love. It's almost impossible to let go of your perception of someone's guilt when you know that by every standard of ethics, morality, or integrity, you're right to find fault with them.

We need to let the past go; only love is real. Hate wins us nothing except enemies and animosity.

In Everyday Grace, my favorite spiritual author, Marianne Williamson, demonstrates the miraculous effect of living a life of unconditional love and forgiveness. Every single day, and in every single way, we experience grace, ease, joy, peace, and fulfillment when we connect to the divine spirit of love that lies within us. This is not an esoteric book. It is filled with practical examples of how to handle many of the common issues we all struggle with on a daily basis. Bless you, Marianne, for this inspired work.

This is the best book I've read in 10 years. Marianne Williamson writes in a way that resonates with me personally. She is spiritual, centered and grounded. She takes a very practical approach toward improving our spiritual life. This book can offer inspiration to many of us as we face daily life.
