Book Description

Anne Perry’s bestselling Victorian novels offer readers an elixir as addictively rich as Devonshire cream or English ale–enticing millions into a literary world almost as real as the original. While flower sellers, costermongers, shopkeepers, and hansom drivers ply their trades, the London police watch over all. Or so people believe. . . .

Early one morning, Thomas Pitt, dauntless mainstay of the Special Branch, is summoned to Long Spoon Lane, where anarchists are plotting an attack. Bombs explode, destroying the homes of many poor people. After a chase, two of the culprits are captured and the leader is shot . . . but by whom?

As Pitt delves into the case, he finds that there is more to the terrorism than the destructive gestures of misguided idealists. The police are running a lucrative protection racket, and clues suggest that Inspector Wetron of Bow Street is the mastermind. As the shadowy leader of the Inner Circle, Wetron is using his influence with the press to whip up fears of more attacks–and to rush a bill through Parliament that would severely curtail civil liberties. This would make him the most powerful man in the country.

To defeat Wetron, Pitt finds that he must run in harness with his old enemy, Sir Charles Voisey, and the unlikely allies are joined by Pitt’s clever wife, Charlotte, and her great aunt, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould. Can they prevail? As they strive to prevent future destruction, nothing less than the fate of the British Empire hangs in precarious balance.

From the first sentence to the last, Long Spoon Lane is a miracle of suspense, of plot and counterplot, bluff and counterbluff, in a take-no-prisoners battle between good and evil. It is possibly the very best of all the wonderful Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels.

3 out of 5 stars Bugged by Tellman.......2007-05-04

This intricate novel with its bombings and Parliamentary debates about increased police power have obvious echoes of our own time. (Patriot Act, anyone?). I liked the theme of Pitt's having to cooperate with archenemy Voisey, but Thomas comes perilously close to James Bond territory in his miraculous escape. What bothered me was Tellman. In the previous book he was Inspector; now he is Sergeant. Did Wetron bust him or is this just sloppy editing? Inquiring minds want to know. And I couldn't believe Wetron trusted him as far as he did Still, an absorbing read.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Anne Perry book.......2007-01-10

I usually love Anne Perry Books. I eat them up as she turns them out no matter which series is published, but I couldn't wait to finish this one. It just wasn't interesting. The usual historical data was prevelant, but the mystery itself left something to be desired. Kind of boring and I was glad to be finished so that I could move on to the next book.

3 out of 5 stars Good...but what's with the editing?.......2006-08-18

Having caught a second wind, Perry continues what she started in Seven Dials by taking familiar characters to new and exciting places (psychologically speaking.) She's really revitalized the series. However, I wonder if she's switched editors with this one, and for the worse. I noticed a large number of typos and either clunky or downright erroneous wordings that never existed in the previous Pitt novels. It was distracting enough for me to knock one star off my review.

4 out of 5 stars Past Meets Present in Another Anne Perry Gem .......2006-07-29

Long Spoon Lane: A Charlotte and Thomas Pitt Novel, by Anne Perry was another excellent mystery set in Perry's evocative Victorian setting. The mystery in this novel was not of the "knock your socks off who would have ever thought it" type. It was, rather, a very evenly paced novel in which many of the developments involved terrorism and the government's response to the terrorists' acts. It was very interesting to read about a piece of legislation that some of the characters supported. The legislation involved giving the police easier rules and access to search people and their homes. The obvious allusion to America's Patriot Act and the debate it has spawned is an excellent piece of the overall picture.

This book focused on Thomas primarily, and his relationship with one of his true enemies. His Professor Moriarty if you will.

I recommend this book and give it a solid and well deserved 4 out of 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2006-07-09

I've just finished this book and found it rather annoying. Though I have enjoyed the Pitt series along the way, it seems that Anne Perry plays fast and loose with historical facts and, in this story, contrives an entirely unlikely key to resolve the plot.

Although no date for the story is given it appears to be set about 1880. The fact that Pitt and other characters have telephones at home, when the telephone was first invented in 1876 and not in general use until much later, is one problem. Another is a reference to someone's having seen another character's photograph in the newspaper, when photos were not used in newspapers until considerably later.

The chief bad guy in this story, police inspector Wetron, supposedly knows that one of his underlings is trying to catch him in illegal acts. So Perry has him leave a clue in his office that will lead the underling to his home, where apparently Wetron is planning on catching him. But the clue he leaves in his office is the real thing - a link to his criminal activity. How dumb can that be? And then he allows the underling to spirit him off on a wild goose chase in the middle of the night while his house is searched. The ridiculousness of this ruined the story for me.

1 out of 5 stars Not the usual Howell..........2007-06-11

Let me start by saying I love Hannah Howell. I'm first in line whenever she releases something in the Highland series. I've read and re-read all of her work. But this book was different.

The story itself is good, a typical Howell romance with enough conflict to keep the reader happy. Unfortunately, it was also one of the most disappointing books I have ever read. Normally Howell's head hopping is smooth, but His Bonnie Bride reads like a "how not to" for romance authors. The shifts between point of view, sometimes within the same paragraph, left me frustrated.

And Howell violated one of my biggest no-no's. The hero calls the heroine a "[..]" Unforgiveable.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-03-13

This was a very good book. I would have given it 5 stars but I thought the ending was dragged on a little to much.

                    5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!.......2006-01-08

This book was wonderful. Full of passion, desire, and yes pride. Storm was a great character. I loved her honesty and yes, her passion. I like to see a heroine have passion and not be ashamed to admit it or show it. I loved the dialouge between Storm and Tavis, I loved the things he said to her. There was never a dull moment in the book. I read it in one long sitting yesterday. This is a book I happily add to my collection.

                    5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2005-09-01

I truly think a person can never go wrong when reading a Hannah Howell book. Her writing is just amazing and she's a talented storyteller.

I first read this book years ago, when I first started reading romance books. At that time it was called AMBER FLAME and it was one of my favorite books by her (one of many!) I don't know why the title was changed when it was reprinted but it's still a wonderful book.

You first meet the heroine, Storm, when she, her brother and cousins were taken hostage by the hero's family when her stepmother decides to go watch the fighting between the English and the Scots. Storm helps patch up a wound that Tavis's father has and with the ransom paid, are able to return home.

Seven years later, Tavis comes upon Storm being attacked by the man her stepmother is trying to force her to marry. She ends up being a hostage again but because her father and brother are away and because she refuses to listen to her stepmother, Storm is actually happy not to return home. While waiting for the ransom to be answered, Tavis gives his word that he won't try to lure Storm to his bed until then. Things change when the reply they get is basically the one Storm knew was coming.

But it's not all smooth sailing for Tavis and Storm. There's an ex-mistress of his who won't go away, the man who wants Storm for her inheritance, the stepmother who wants to force her to marry Hugh, the possibility that she's going to lose those she loves the most and the fact that their families have always been feuding.

One of the things I liked the most was the interaction between the hero and heroine. Sparks flew each time they were together. And the smart-alecky (is that a word? LOL) comments Storm had when she didn't like something just made me laugh.

This is a book not to be missed!

                    Mad

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Here we are again lucky enough to have the fantastic talents of Jim Aparo drawing Batman. Yet another DC comics publicity stunt in part, though, as the latest incarnation of the Robin character was not too popular with readers. So, they decided to do a storyline where the Joker captures him, and the readers could vote on whether he died or not.

Pretty clearly from the title, it is thumbs down for the Bird Boy.

4 out of 5 stars A pivotal moment in the Batman mythos.......2007-08-31

I'm sure everyone who is even remotely familiar with Batman's background knows this story. Even if you haven't read it, the cover says it all. Robin dies. Although he was not the first or last Robin, it still sent ripples through the Batman canon that are still creating waves today (i.e. Under the Hood, Countdown).

I have to admit, this is the first story I ever read with Jason Todd as Robin. I knew a little bit about him but it's a little pathetic that before I even got to know the guy, he's gone. However, Starlin does take the time to fill in a little back story for those like me that may not have a clue as to who this Robin is or where he came from. It made me want to start backtracking and read a little bit more about him while he was alive so I could appreciate his departure more.

The basic story is after Bruce grounds Jason from active duty as Robin, Jason comes across his birth certificate indicating that his mother who he thought to be dead was in fact not his real mother and that she may still be out there. After some detective work he narrows it down to three women and goes off in search of her. Meanwhile The Joker is up to no good selling a nuke to terrorists in the middle east and Batman is on his trail. By a huge coincidence Bruce and Jason run into each other and end up helping each other with their missions.

Other than the unlikeliness of their journeys intersecting, the rest of the rest of the story plays out rather well with a few surprises as in addition to some good action and dialog. Starlin manages to make Jason's last moments meaningful and character defining. Jim Aparo's artwork is also pitch perfect and works really well in telling the story.

Although the story is not quite as epic as I had expected, it must have been mind blowing when it was first printed. The fact that leading up to his death you never see it coming would have been the best reading experience. It seems like just a simple story of Jason trying to dig deeper into his past and Joker up to his old tricks and then they hit you with a ton of bricks out of nowhere. I'd say that is a pretty hard thing to pull off well and that is why this story sets the stage for the rest of Batman's career.

2 out of 5 stars Important to Batman Timeline, but that is the only reason to read.......2007-07-30

First, I want to state no graphic novel is going to get five stars from me. As much as I enjoy Batman, to give any of them five stars would be a stretch. After all, how many are on par with Twain, Fitzgerald, Hemmingway, ect.

So, with that said, I have to state this is even poor for a graphic novel. The plot line is weak. The story itself is weak. If not for the killing of a key member in the Batman family, this would be unreadable.

In other words, read it for the time line within the Batman realm, but do not think that you are getting a great story.

3 out of 5 stars Average Batman Tale.......2006-10-27

Main redeeming factor was the death of Jason Todd. But, the Joker as ambassador of Iran, yeah right. I just found many aspects of the story to be unrealistic in terms of most batman stories that I have read. I do think it is worth a read though, you know this is story is important, I just wish there was more to than what made it famous.

Eagle Man (Ed McGaa) shares his knowledge of Lakota Sioux spiritual practices as a way to include everyone who wants to heal our world. He calls those who revere Mother Earth and want to ensure her continuation, Rainbow People. He writes in an intimate way, as if talking with friends. He describes the meaning of the various rituals and myths and shares helpful information about how non-Native people may or may not participate. In addition to his personal journey and the sacred practices, he details techniques for building a sweat lodge, making a peace pipe and more. A fascinating book which has earned a place in my personal library.

He provides great insight into the Native American beliefs and customs.Personally I believe his books should be used in high school and colleges to allow others the opportunity to understand our Native American Indian brothers and sisters.

I read this book while spending the summer backpacking around the Rocky Mountains. Anything that you carry around in a backpack for that long has to be worth the weight and this one definitely was.
