Terrific Ending.......2007-02-22
Book 4 of the Nikki and Michael series and the perfect ending. When things finally start to work for Michael and Nikki eerything has to go wrong when an old rival of Michael comes to mess things up. This time its up to Nikki alone to slove this case. A fantastic ending to a very good vampire series.
Great urban fantasy.......2004-08-04
Nikki Jones is taking her test to enter the Damask Circle, an organization of good supernatural beings sworn to fight evil whenever they find it. She does her best to pass so she can marry her vampire love Michael Kelly. In the room she senses a great evil and through their telepathic link Michael senses her fear. Seline, the leader of the Damask Circle, informs him that an old malevolence has infiltrated the organization with the principle targets being them.
Over a century ago, Michael killed a vampire sorcerer who murdered his lover but what he didn't know was that Emmett Dunlevy had a twin brother just as evil with the same powers. Wylin swore he would bring his brother back to life but to do that he needs to sacrifice Michael and Selene. Michael is kidnapped and Nikki disguised as Selena travels to the ghost town where he is being held. Nikki tries to rescue Michael and destroy Dunlevy but her beloved doesn't remember her and there are all kinds of supernatural traps in town waiting to be sprung. If they can't defeat Dunlevy, they will die and his brother will be resurrected.
Kerri Arthur is one of the best writers of vampire romantic thrillers on the market today. Her latest work has plenty of action and villains that are easy to hate but it is the love between the protagonists that makes this work very special. KISS THE NIGHT GOOD-BYE has the feel of a historical western since everyone in the ghost town believe it is the nineteenth except Nikki and the villain. Readers will really sink their teeth in this memorable and ensorcelling supernatural tale.

Book Description
Newly widowed after a shockingly brief marriage to an elderly British lord, Jocelyn Fleming still aches with the pain of unexplored desire. And now her restless heart is leading her far from the protective bosom of polite London society to the perilous beauty of the American West . . .and to Colt Thunder.
Breathlessly exciting but dangerously unpredictable, Colt is a loner whose Cheyenne blood burns hotter than the blistering Arizona sun. Jocelyn's wealth and title mean nothing to this strange whose passion rules his actions and his heart. But neither the wild desert stallion nor the untouched English rose can deny their irresistible attraction. . .or prevent the firestorm of emotion that erupts when their vastly different worlds collide.

Absolutely loved it.......2007-09-03
I read this book in two days; I just could not put it down. I'm not usually one for Western Romance Novels but I got hooked on this one. Such interesting characters a duchess and a Cheyenne Warrior, combine that with a great story and the steamy love scenes, who could resist. I also enjoyed the fact that the leading lady wasn't some push over; she was spunky and could hold her own. Johanna Lindsey you have not let me down yet.
Way too violent beginning; implausible ending.......2006-12-24
Well, I guess I'm in the minority here. Johanna Lindsey is one of these romance authors where some of her books I just love (like Angel--one of my favorite all-time book), and some are just so-so. Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I found the horrible violence at the beginning of the novel extremely objectionable, and unnecessary. She could easily have just alluded to it, rather than describe it in graphic detail. I do agree that Colt was a wonderful, sexy, desirable character, and I also loved Jocelyn. The story line was very good. But personally I don't like when an author waits until the very last page for the couple to get together. Moreover, I found the way that they got together very implausible, given the rest of the novel. Colt was extremely resistant to being with Jocelyn (even though he loved her) because of his past life history. So the entire novel he's fighting against it, and what, now all of a sudden, pretty much out of the blue, he asks her to marry him? There were just too many unanswered questions for me to feel satisfied after reading it.
Didn't think I'd like it but..........2006-07-22
I really didn't think I'd like this because it takes place in America, however, I was surprised. I actually got into it as much if not more than her traditional English based stories. An excellent read.
Could've Been Better.......2006-07-17
Savage Thunder is your typical romantic story about a heroine who flees for her life and a dark, brooding hero who saves her. Jocelyn Fleming loses her husband, Edward, Duke of Eaton, to illness. Before he dies, he arranges for her to be far out of reach of his ruthless relatives, who will seek to control her and her money. So for three years, Jocelyn travels the world with her protectors and an assassin following in her wake, when she meets Colt Thunder. Colt is part-Cheyenne, part-white man who has suffered much because of his heritage. Betrayal at the hands of a former fiancé, a white woman, has left him bitter and distrusting of all white women.
When Colt runs into Jocelyn's entourage, hired mercenaries who are intent on killing her are pursuing Jocelyn. He saves her life and she practically coerces him into taking on the job as her guide. Colt struggles to keep her enemies at bay, but their adventures draw them closer together and thus help heal the wounds in Colt's heart.
I love the storyline and its simple plot. Jocelyn is such a likable character. She is strong, smart, curious and guileless while Colt is a wounded man determined not to fall in love with her. My only complaint is that the story seemed rushed. There's not a lot of depth to each character and I wish the author would've spent more time teasing out the personalities, backgrounds, and such, of each character and making them come alive. There is so much potential that went unexplored.
Despite that, Savage Thunder is still a very likable read.
More than just a little in Love with Colt.......2004-08-04
I've had this book for years. I have read and re-read it time and again. This is one of my all time favorite books. The pain Colt went through hurts me so much when I read it but in the end he is able to find happiness in the same place where so much sorrow and agony took place. The interactions between Colt, his siblings and other characters that turn up in the book made me laugh, cry, get angry and in the end, I could not wait to go and find the other books with these characters in them.
Book Description
The West Virginia mine war of 1920-21, a major civil insurrection of unusual brutality on both sides, even by the standards of the coal fields, involved thousands of union and nonunion miners, state and private police, militia, and federal troops. Before it was over, three West Virginia counties were in open rebellion, much of the state was under military rule, and bombers of the U.S. Army Air Corps had been dispatched against striking miners.
The origins of this civil war were in the Draconian rule of the coal companies over the fiercely proud miners of Appalachia. It began in the small railroad town of Matewan when Mayor C. C. Testerman and Police Chief Sid Hatfield sided with striking miners against agents of the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, who attempted to evict the miners from company-owned housing. During a street battle, Mayor Testerman, seven Baldwin-Felts agents, and two miners were shot to death.
Hatfield became a folk hero to Appalachia. But he, like Testerman, was to be a martyr. The next summer, Baldwin-Felts agents assassinated him and his best friend, Ed Chambers, as their wives watched, on the steps of the courthouse in Welch, accelerating the miners’ rebellion into open warfare.
Much neglected in historical accounts, Thunder in the Mountains is the only available book-length account of the crisis in American industrial relations and governance that occured during the West Virginia mine war of 1920-21.

Colorful American History.......2002-05-14
How could historians have overlooked such an important and colorful piece of American history? The book is a fast read and filled with vivid descriptions. Once you read it, you won't be able to believe that something like this happened in America.
This is an exciting read!.......2001-05-11
This book is probably the most complete and balanced view of the Mine Wars in West Virginia, an almost unknown yet significant part of American history. It details how and why things happened and gives very vivid accounts of the struggles of the day in the coalfields. This was the largest insurrection against our Federal Government outside of the War Between the States, and was the only time bombs have been dropped from planes on American soil. A must read for anyone interested in Appalachia or coal mining.
An interesting account of the coal wars.......2000-03-24
I really enjoyed this fascinating account of the coal wars of west virginia. Not enough has been reported about the events that occured there, and this book sheds light on the subject.

My last try of Cassie Edwards.......2007-09-30
From the back cover:
Moon Song...
Wild and free, she stood poised on the brink of womanhood as she promised her heart to a handsome young warrior. But the virile brave was of the Mohawk tribe, ancient enemies of her own Oneida people. And when her turtle clan abandoned their peaceful village by the river, she had no choice but to follow.
Swift Thunder...
For ten years he dreamed of the lovely girl with the crown of pink rosebuds in her flowing hair. She had mystically drawn him to her, and no woman since could compare. But when their canoes met one night in midstream, he discovered a full-blown passion that he had never imagined in the budding maiden. With the haunting sensuality of moonlight and the savage excitement of thunder, they came together in a forbidden love that could overcome even the fiercest blood feud.
And my review:
Cassie Edwards was highly recommended to me, so I bought a bunch of her books. Big mistake! I should have been especially wary of this one, which boasts that it's Dorchester's (the publisher) 50th Cassie Edwards romance. I've yet to find an author who can write that many quality books. More likely, they are rough drafts churned out in a hurry. That's the case here.
This book read like a young adult novel. There's no real tension, and no real feel of history or what aboriginal life was really like. It's just the briefest of sketches. The characters are not well developed (as another reviewer has said, the heroine was very weak), the romance is rushed (in every one of Cassie Edwards' books, the character look at each other and are in love about two seconds later), and the plot not much better. I know this author has a ton of fans, but I'm certainly not one of them. Her books read like a rough first draft, not a polished finished novel. The "aboriginal Romeo and Juliet" premise could have been a really compelling one, but I felt that the author only barely scratched the surface of this story's potential.
In fact, I have five more novels of hers that I haven't even opened yet. And I'm not about to. They will be given away unread, because I just can't subject myself to this author's writing anymore. Not recommended. There are far better Native American romances out there.
Could have been a lot better.......2003-11-20
This book could have been really good. Swift Thunder and Moon Song were likable, although Moon Song did not have a strong enough personality. She was always "murmuring" (the author way overused that word!) and clinging to Swift Thunder like she couldn't do anything for herself. The plot was very boring, and predictable at times. And it was written SO simply that it was almost like reading a child's book. I couldn't believe it made it to publication. The premise of two people from enemy tribes falling in love could have been so much more exciting than this book. Look somewhere else for a better Indian romance.
ridiculous.......2002-12-21
This book was so silly ,I think a 8 year old kid would have laughed at it.Especially the part where Moon Song has a dream that Swift Thunder is an English knight riding through the sky on a steed racing to recue her.
Also it is sickening how these 2 lovesick characters fawn over "THE BLACK ROBE "priests .....from England?Excuse me The Black Robes were French.
These so-called ...European benefactors were the ones who brought about the first destruction of the Eastern Tribes with their small-pox and superior attitudes and policies.
I can,t beleive a book so silly and badly written would ever get published.
I wish there were more American Indian authors out there instead of the glut of white female romance authors who fail to capture the real essence of Aboriginal history and way of life.
What Are You Waiting For! This is a must HAVE!.......2001-01-18
Swift Thunder and Moon Song they met as children and fall in love at first sight. A forbidden love! (They both belong to different clans one sided with the French and the other with the English), but that didn't stop Swift Thunder and Moon Song to be ONE! Moon Song family decided to leave their home by the river. Moon Song was very upset and drop something just before leaving her home. Swift Thunder went to Moon Song home to search for her, he was very sad that she was not there. What really had me in tears was when Swift Thunder pick up the article that Moon Song left behind and carried with him for 10 years. They did find each other after 10 years still more in love than the first time. I would like to know one thing, you didn't think I was going to tell you everything that has happen in Swift Thunder and Moon Song lives, You got to find out for your self: What are you waiting for go ahead and buy it! You're going to love it! You will actually feel the love that these two people have for each other.

In this sequel to Dawn, Lilith Iyapo has given birth to what looks like a normal human boy named Akin. But Akin actually has five parents: a male and female human, a male and female Oankali, and a sexless Ooloi. The Oankali and Ooloi are part of an alien race that rescued humanity from a devastating nuclear war, but the price they exact is a high one--the aliens are compelled to genetically merge their species with other races, drastically altering both in the process. On a rehabilitated Earth, this "new" race is emerging through human/Oankali/Ooloi mating, but there are also "pure" humans who choose to resist the aliens and the salvation they offer. These resisters are sterilized by the Ooloi so that they cannot reproduce the genetic defect that drives humanity to destroy itself, but otherwise they are left alone (unless they become violent). When the resisters kidnap young Akin, the Oankali choose to leave the child with his captors, for he--the most "human" of the Oankali children--will decide whether the resisters should be given back their fertility and freedom, even though they will only destroy themselves again. This is the second volume in Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series, a powerful tale of alien existence.

Customer Reviews:
science fiction exploration of identity.......2007-02-13
Now I know why the three volume Xenogenesis series was collected in a single volume titled Lilith's Brood. Adulthood Rites is the second entry of three in Xenogenesis and the focus has shifted from Lilith Iyapo to her part human / part Oankali son, Akin. In Dawn we were introduced to an Earth that had all but been destroyed by humanity before the remnants of humanity were rescued by the alien race Oankali. The Oankali survive and adapt by finding new species and civilizations to "Trade" with. In the rescue of humanity, the Oankali will Trade with humans and help humanity repopulate the newly restored Earth. But at a cost. Humanity will no longer be what it once was because a Trade involves both parties giving up something and receiving something in return. Humanity will get another step on the evolutionary scale but will be far more and less than what they once were. Lilith Iyapo was chosen by the Oankali to seed the first colony and awake the remnant from their slumber and teach them to accept the Oankali. In many ways she failed with that first group she was given, but by the end of Dawn Lilith was to found her first community while those who would not accept what had occurred were isolated and left sterile. Breeding could only happen with the permission of the Oankali. At the very end Dawn we learn that Lilith was pregnant.
When Adulthood Rites opens, the story is focused on Akin, one of Lilith's hybrid children and her first son. Because he is part Oankali, Akin is aware in the womb and if he were fully human one would consider him unnaturally precocious. As it stands he is not fully human, though as an infant he looks human enough (except for his tongue). The focus of Adulthood Rites remains squarely on Akin with brief flashes of events surrounding Lilith, but only to a point. I would suggest that 95% of the story follows Akin as he grows and as he is kidnapped by raiders who seek to have children the only way they can, which is by theft. This theft, or kidnapping, of Akin is the event that drives how the rest of the story will play as it shapes Akin into something different than he might otherwise have been had he been left to bond with his siblings.
A major theme of Butler's work here seems to be of the nature of identity. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be different? What does it mean to have an identity in a particular culture and embrace that of another? Or be embraced by another? Butler's fiction, in particular the Xenogenesis trilogy, addresses these issues in such a way that it fits a science fiction story with aliens and tentacles, but it is really a story that addresses what can go on in our society as well. There is a depth here once one looks beyond the surface of an interesting story. Make no mistake, Adulthood Rites is an interesting story.
With all of that said about what the novel is about and what it is talking about, I do need to confess that like Dawn, I found Adulthood Rites to be less engaging and gripping than some of Butler's other fiction. In particular Kindred and the two Parable novels seem to me to be stronger works of fiction than Xenogenesis. What does that mean for the casual reader? Not much. Adulthood Rites would only be considered a "lesser" work of fiction when it is being compared to Butler's own work. Otherwise, I would suggest that Adulthood Rites (and Dawn before it) is a creative look at science fiction and how actually meeting an alien race could and would change humanity irrevocably. To be blunt, Butler tells a damn good story and keeps taking that damn good story in directions that were not necessarily apparent when the story began. She keeps it interesting and she keeps it authentic (as authentic as aliens changing the genetics of humans could be, but it feels real, and that's important).
Bottom Line: Octavia Butler need to be read by more people. She was a top shelf talent with a powerful creative voice and Adulthood Rites is a good novel that suffers only, only in comparison to her own work. In comparison to others, she stands tall.

The Passing of a Star.......2006-06-15
Octavia Butler recently died in Seattle. Her passing is a great loss to literature in general and science fiction in particular. She once said that she didn't really write `Science Fiction' as such because she did know much about science. In fact her books do tackle some of the big themes of SciFi, but are not in the `hard science' genre. Her themes were race, sexuality, and the nature of `reality.'
Ms Butler was dyslexic, [...], above average in height, African American, and a genius. She lived as a hermit in the middle of a major city and created a body of work which stands with the very best. She won both Hugo and Nebula Awards several times and the MacArthur Foundation `Genius' Award in 1995. I think she is one of the few SciFi writers to have received this recognition.
I am posting this review on each of the Xenogenesis Trilogy (Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago) sites as well as the volume where they are collected; `Lilith's Brood.' All are excellent and recommended.
In this series Ms Butler took on sexuality and the nature of `humanity' in a startling new way. She gradually takes the reader from the perspective of a `human,' specifically an Earthling who encounters an alien race to the perspective of the `alien,' specifically the descendent of interbreeding between humans and aliens who is now the `human' and sees Earthlings as the aliens.
Ms Butler skills are so great that this change in perspective goes so slowly that the reader is largely unaware until it has been accomplished. While some will dither about which of Ms Butler's novels are her `greatest,' few will argue that this series is superb. I have read nearly all of Ms Butler's works and enjoyed them all. I think she was one of the finest writers of speculative fiction in recent history and will miss her work.
Wonderful........2003-01-30
This book and the other two in this trilogy are my favorite books. I've read them repeatedly.
Best of the Xenogenesis Series by a Very Narrow Margin.......2002-05-23
Better than "Dawn," the first of the series, and slightly better than the finale, "Imago." All 3 are OUTSTANDING. Save money by buying "Lilith's Brood," which contains all 3. See "Lilith's Brood" for more about each book.
Integral to the 3 part story.......2001-06-21
Butler uses her skills as a Science fiction writer to make all of us think about what defines our humanity. It's a test that has no correct answers except to survive. Only a leap of faith and fear aids Butlers characters through their Adulthood Rites.
Customer Reviews:
This book is THE antidote to youth violence!.......2000-04-23
Jeff Brodsky has brought forth out of his inmost being the very essence and heart of a father. Stepping Into Adulthood explores the fragile, yet incalculably vital connection between fathers and their children. This link, this bond between generations, is staggering in its effect on each one of us, and when it is absent or severed, the damage to our entire personhood is profound.
Jeff has called us back to some very ancient and foundational roots which speak to the very core of our perception of self-worth, and value. Without the affirmation and connection to our fathers, we suffer immeasurably, and every one of our relationships suffer. I cannot too highly recommend this book and the message it carries!
Through my friendship with Jeff over the years, I have seen the effect of this teaching in my own family. Jeff presided over the "Stepping Into Adulthood" ceremonies that we provided for my own teenage son and daughter. Their lives have never wavered from the paths of righteousness, and we have not had to endure the all-too-typical rebellion that so many parents have suffered through. My children know that they are part of a continuum of relationship that goes back centuries, and have taken their place as responsible members of our family and community.
I cannot help but think about how this book, had it found it's way into the homes of the two now-devastated families of the Columbine killers, might have changed the course of these young men's lives, and saved us all from the horror and suffering we have endured here in Littleton. As the presiding pastor at the funeral of slain martyr Rachel Joy Scott, who was murdered at Columbine last year, my heart breaks for this generation of youth. BUY THIS BOOK, and purchase copies to give away to everyone you know who have teens or pre-teens. It will change your family, and is without question the most potent "Vaccination" against future Columbine catastrophes available in print today!
The "How To" book you've been looking for........1999-09-12
A generation of young people is looking for purpose and endorsement. A generation of parents stands in confusion as the gap between them and their children widens.
Jeff Brodsky, through personal experience, shows how to develop relationships with our children and prepare them for adulthood. What better way to reinforce and give purpose than to commemorate the fact that your sons and daughters have begun to show signs of maturity - thus reaffirming who they are and commissioning them for the rest of their lives. A handbook for parents.
A powerful tool for parents!.......1999-08-19
"Stepping into adulthood" is a blessing and a very helpful instrument for parents who want to provide a different transition to their children from adolescence to adulthood. In our society today, parents have not spent time with their children. This can be dangerous and frustrating for a young person. Reading and performing the lessons contained in this book, parents will be able to have in mind how is important paying attention to their children's lives, and help them in their problems by being a friend and a counselor to them. Teenagers need somebody to look up to and to count on in order to pass this important phase of their lives. This book provides a powerful tool to parents deal with their children by the named "rite of passage" which will be worthwhile for the rest of their lives. Parents: get this book! Your children will be thankful!
This book pays eternal dividends.......1999-07-29
"Stepping into Adulthood" encourages every family to enjoy the journey of being a parent and to fulfilling the command "...to bringing up your children in the training and admonition of the Lord." Eph. 6:4.
I have seen firsthand how fathers have found life skills though this book, and are now developing lasting relationship with their teenager children.
This book pays eternal dividends.

A great book to help you bless your children.......1999-07-21
I have read the book, "Stepping into Adulthood" by Jeff Brodsky and released quite a bit of the teaching into my church. The aspects that have been particularly helpful have been the parts that deal with a child's identity and destiny. These chapters answer the questions of "Why am I here?; Where am I going?; What is my purpose?"
Also of importance is the chapter on the Rite of Passage into adulthood. This provides a spiritual as well as a practical reason to celebrate Adulthood. The book also gives helpful encouragement and tools to parents to accept the responsibilities of their role in releasing blessing upon their children.

I simply cound NOT put this book down. So intense!.......1999-01-20
I enjoy books that make me think. This one did. I have only read 3 of Octavia's books, but they are all dynamite. I rarely read a book through at one sitting, but I raced through all three of the exogenisis series. The many layers of meanings made me think about so many things in the "real" world. These books challenged me in many ways and I am still expanding as a result. Thank you, Octavia!!!!!!!!
Solid book - follows "Dawn".......1998-07-05
Aduulthood Rites is a solid continuation of the story line begun with Dawn. Lilith Iyapo continues life with the Oankali. This story has the feel of struggle concerning racial domination (of the extraterrestrial kind) and how kindness from your rulers can complicate but not necessarily alleviate a situation. Layers upon layers of meaning here. Warning: Octavia Butler is highly addictive. Read one and others are sure to follow.
Book Description
When we celebrate life's changes, they become our greatest opportunities. The heartfelt and timely message of "Rites of Passage" is that we can navigate the challenges and changes of life with grace. When we harness the energy of transition, we take control over our experiences and develop a deeper understanding of them.
Every major transition in our lives--be it marriage, high school graduation, the death of a parent or spouse, or the last child leaving home--brings with it opportunities for growth and self-actualization, for repositioning ourselves in the world. "Rites of Passage" allows us to use the energy held within the anxiety of change to nourish the new person who is forever struggling to be born.

Disappointed.......2007-07-15
I ordered the Gift of the Red Bird by Paula D'Arcy. The book was mailed on June 13, 2007 via US Postal Service. Unfortunately the item has yet to arrive. I have a tracking number but no way of contacting Amazon.
spiritual insight.......2007-03-08
This book was exactly what I had hoped for in that it was an individual description of a personal spirtual quest and the finding of the divine on this earth. A very uplifting, down-to-earth story that reads amazingly quickly
Gift of the Red Bird.......2006-08-13
Very inspirational. I was totally filled with the Holy Spirit. I think I would like to go on a retreat like that. We have so much to learn. Please try it.
Short but beautiful book . . ........2006-04-21
Gift of the Red Bird, a Spiritual Encounter, reads like a journal from Paula D'Arcy's life. On August 18, 1975, on a return trip home to Connecticut, Paula's car was struck by a drunk motorist. Her daughter, Sarah, died of head injuries on August 20, and her husband died three days later from a ruptured spleen. Paula was alive and three months pregnant with her second baby daughter, Beth. For this reason, she went on living.
Gift of the Red Bird tells of a story of extreme loss and ache, of searching for answers, of making sense out of the pain, and of looking for some light in the darkness.
This is Paula's journey, and when she goes on a wilderness retreat -- where it's just her, God, and nature -- she begins to get some comfort for her wounds.
A deeply moving narrative, this book may be short, but the message is deep and lasting. It's a journey well worth taking for anyone who has ever had a tragedy hit their lives where they've had the same questions.
