Book Description

"A deliciously evoked return to worlds, and a Europe, now almost vanished; it will ravish connoisseurs of the lost."-John Fowles.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Sybille Bedford's latest novel walks the borderline between autobiography and fiction. It picks up where A Legacy leaves off, leading us from the Kaiser's Germany into the wider Europe of the 1920s and the limbo between world wars. The narrator, Billi, tells the story of her apprenticeship to life, and of her many teachers: her father, a pleasure-loving German baron; her brilliant, beautiful, erratic English mother; and later, on the Mediterranean coast of France, the Huxleys, Aldous and Maria. Jigsaw, wrote the Sunday Times, is "the most unusual, most resonant of all Sybille Bedford's unusual and resonant books."

5 out of 5 stars An amazing life!.......2003-08-05

Sybille Bedford, a little known but fabulous 20th century author, has written one of the most searingly-honest semi-autobiographies I've ever read. Bedford's "Legacy" is the story of her father, written as a novel, about events that occurred long before her birth. "Jigsaw", which was short-listed for the Booker Prize, continues the tale, with the author as the major character with her mother. Although obviously based on real events, the book is nevertheless written in novelistic style, and her portrayal of life between the wars and those she knew is beautiful and very compelling. Bedford was born of upper class parents, in a milieu where people had money but no jobs, traveled around the continent for extended periods, and settled in other countries on a whim, in the days when passports and identity papers weren't necessary. Her parents divorced, the story opens with Bedford and her father living on the family estate given to her father by her mother as a settlement--surrounded by priceless antiques, but without any cash, they barter for food and the necessities of life. A lonely child, educated only by her father, knowing only adults, Bedford's life changes radically upon her father's death, and she finds herself in Italy, then France, with her beautiful, mercurial mother. Bedford turns a critical, sometimes even harsh, eye on her own behavior, berating herself for running away as a child, for an adolescent crush on another woman, for her guilt when her mother goes away and peace is restored at home. Bedford and her mother are part of the pre-WWII community of artists, writers and free-spirits who roamed Europe in the calm before the great storm of the next war--she inhabits a world where letters are delivered and a response received all in one day, where busses and cars are still a novelty, where servants stay on even without pay because they have nowhere else to go. Sexual experimentation is the norm--this book reminds the reader that "free love" wasn't discovered in the 60's. One is keenly aware of the transience of this world, and shudders when Bedford's mother assures her that the lessons of The Great War were so horrible that there will never be another.

The tragic character in this book is the mother--one sees quickly that despite her intelligence her whole being is dependent on her ability to charm and attract men--when her second marriage goes awry the consequences are truly disastrous. The book ends abruptly at a crisis point in her mother's marriage when Bedford was 19 or 20--the reader says "But what happens next!?" I don't think there is any more--Bedford in the introduction says this is her last novel, and indeed she was in her late 80's when "Jigsaw" was published. Bedford deserves more recognition in the US--she is a premier European talent, and "Legacy" and "Jigsaw" are riveting stories.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best written books which I have read.......1997-12-03

This is an intelligent, highly engaging and fascinating novel. It mimics, both a travelogue and an autobiography. It leaves the reader itching to know how much of the story was based on the life experiences of the writer. The various relationships between the characters in the novel are quite unique and shocking yet entertaining. I highly recommend this novel

    Book Description

WHAT'S THE SECRET TO EVERLASTING LOVE?

Taylor McGuire, a hardworking single mom with a Ph.D. in psychology, believes that compatibility is the key to a successful marriage. Bestselling relationship guru Jonathan Kirby believes it's sexual chemistry. So when these two former lovers meet up on national TV, it's more than just a difference of expert opinion that sets the sparks flying between them. And when Taylor puts forth her theory on love, Jonathan can't help but challenge: "Want to bet?" So begins an unconventional contest -- forty couples involved in a monthlong mock marriage for a chance to win one million dollars -- which puts Taylor's and Jonathan's professional reputations on the line. As the competition heats up, so does the attraction. And as they fall for each other, the two experts realize that love is not a science...sometimes it's just magic.

3 out of 5 stars Shared interests versus passion.......2007-05-23

Reunited after 17 years, psychologists Taylor & Jonathan appear on a talk show outlining their opinions of what makes a marriage work. Taylor believes it is through shared interests that a marriage can be sustained, while Jonathan believes nothing can survive without "heat." After goading by the hostess, they enter into a bet, a la Temptation Island, where 40 couples and paired up and have to live together in a mock marriage for a month for a chance to win a million bucks. Half the couples have shared interest; the other half have "heat". The psychiatrist with the most relationships still standing will have their theories validated. Making matters more interesting is the romantic past the two shared (and a huge bombshell she's kept from Jonathan), as well as the heat that's still present.

Mallery has penned a cheeky and light romance novel with plenty of sizzle, humorous situations, and several distinct couples that are all fully developed characters. I would have liked the spotlight placed on the primary couple a little more, but overall, it was definitely a good beach read.

5 out of 5 stars Love Susan Mallery.......2007-05-14

Another great book from Susan Mallery. You can't go wrong with any of her books!!

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book.......2006-09-23

This book definately fulfilled the Polly Anna ideas I have in life. The characters were adorable and sweet. The competition between the two psychologists was a new twist on a story. Although there are many couples in the contest we only meet a few of them, which was okay but had me wondering about the non existant ones.
There were some very hot scenes in this book as well. This was my first read by this author and I truly enjoyed it and found myself smiling while reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not married to this book.......2006-06-26

This book featured the main couple Taylor and Jonathon as well as three other couples especially the one where the guy was a virgin and she was supposed to be a sexpot. Quite frankly I found the storyline of the other couple's more interesting than the main couple. However, quite enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Some sizzling moments..........2006-01-12

'Married for a Month' by Susan Mallery is fun lighthearted romance novel. Taylor and Jonathan are both psychologists who set out to decide which of their marriage theories is correct. The author develops a few of the contest couples and how their romances or lack of develops. The twist between Taylor and Jonathan is that they knew each other 17 years ago and for the next month, they are working, eating and sharing secrets with each other. Enjoy ! I would also suggest reading Falling For Gracie by Susan Mallery.

From the author: This study aimed to describe the quality of the intimate relationship among parents six months after the birth of their first child. The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) has been modified and used on 820 responding first-time parents, of which 768 were couples. The results reveal that most parents were happy in their relationship, but both mothers and fathers were discontented with the dyadic sexuality. "Being too tired for sexual activity" was a problem, especially for the mothers, and the most common frequency of intercourse was once or twice per month. The result does not support the assumption that the couples compensate the lacking sexuality with sensuality. Good communication within the couple was associated with higher levels of several dimensions of the intimate relationship, especially dyadic consensus and satisfaction. Thus, one way to stabilize and strengthen a relationship when dyadic sexual activity is low would be to emphasize dyadic communication and sensual activity.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm, so good........2007-08-30

I first picked up Foundation because I had heard so much about the series on a science fiction podcast and its forum that I listen to. I wanted to know what the hype was all about over these books. There was always some kind of topic on the series, and the Robot series too. So I decided to pick up Foundation the next time I went to the book store.

I devoured Foundation. I read it in about three days. Asimov just seemed to speak to me, not only with the ideas, but also the writing style. After Foundation, I moved on to Foundation and Empire, another great book in the series. After reading Foundation and Empire, I decided to read Prelude to Foundation, because one of my friends at school had been reading it at the same time I was reading Foundation, and highly praised it; I just had to decide on what order to read the books: Second Foundation or Prelude to Foundation? I finally decided to read Prelude.

I loved this book. Asimov really knows how to keep a reader interested. Unlike the other two Foundation novels I've read, this one is filled with action, and is still able to deliver the mind blowing twist at the end. His style has changed from the other Foundation novels, but it does not take away from the experience. Instead of many sub-stories that slowly reveal the universe, Prelude is one continuous story about one person. Set during the 'flight' period of Hari Seldon's life, Asimov takes us on a journey through the home world of the Galactic Empire, Trantor, a world filled with a wider variety of cultures than the Galaxy itself! During his flight, Seldon searches for a way to cultivate his Psychohistory and make it feasible. Constantly on the run from governmental forces, Seldon must balance his research, his flight for freedom, and his integration into new cultures all at once. Action packed and with a plot twist that will have all Asimov fans giddy with excitement, this book kept me interested through every page!

I highly recommend this book to not only Asimov fans (any fan will definitely get a kick out of this one), but also to anyone interested in reading science fiction classics, or even any science fiction in general! What's not to like for an SF fan? Its got space travel, fast speeds, futuristic guns, futuristic societies and cultures, and doubts about the origin of humans! (Earth? A myth or a reality? *chuckle*) It took me about a week to read the book, but that was only because I was busy during that week. Had I had time, I would have devoured the book in 2 days! This book is well worth the time I put into it, and is especially worth it for Asimov fans, for it ties in his Robot and Empire novels incredibly well; it is a real tickle to see those tie-ins.

So, if you are thinking of buying this book, do. It is well worth the money and the time, plus it is not much money at all. You will not regret it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-08-04

Prelude to Foundation is an after-series prequel, if you will. The book look s at the earlier life of Hari Seldon while is is developing and presenting his theory of psychohistory.

Not such an easy process, and he gets married along the way, as well as dodging more than one violent attempt on their persons. Luckily, the spousal unit is handy with a blade, as far as this goes.

3 out of 5 stars Only the end reproduces the magic.......2007-07-21

I read the original foundation series a year ago and just now read Prelude. Prelude starts off interesting but bogs down in the middle. I put the book down for days at a time before finally getting through to the end. The original trilogy was filled with plot twists driven by edgy logic. Once the plot twist revealed itself you could think back to the clues that hand been given in advance and marvel at how it all made sense. Prelude is largely absent this style until the last 50 pages. The end of the book is quite entertaining, if you can make it that far. BTW, if you are more interested in a visionary interpretation of the distant future, read Arthur C. Clarke's 3001. It's light on plot but his vision of the future is fascinating.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Sci-fi read.......2007-05-07

Classic science fiction by one of the masters. Fantasy fans might get bogged down, but for sci-fi purists this is the stuff. The whole Foundation series is excellent and I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Fun futuristic novel.......2007-05-06

This was a very readable Sci-fi that takes place in the far, far future when there are numerous planets inhabited by humans, called the Galactic Empire. It follows the path of Hari Seldon, a mathmetitian that came up with the idea of psychohistory, a mathmatical way to possibly predict the future. This novel is the adventure of Hari with another character sent to protect him, on the center of the Galactic Empire, the planet of Trantor. Hari and his companion find one interesting adventure after another.

5 out of 5 stars The Book that Started it All...The Prelude to Foundation.......2004-02-18

Prelude to Foundation by Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific writers of science fiction, is a prequel to his most acclaimed series, The Foundation Trilogy. The book traces the adventures of Hari Seldon, a young mathematician who thinks he has found a way to predict the future. He calls his theory psychohistory, and is based in part on the Chaos theory and lots and lots of math. The only downside of this is that his theory only works on large populations of people, meaning that it cannot foresee certain events for a particular person. Hari travels to Trantor, the "capital" of the Galactic Empire to attend a conference and present his new ideas. His idea however, catches the eyes of Cleon I, the emperor, and becomes the most wanted man in the universe and is soon hiding from the imperial guards. As he dodges the guards, he traverses the vast terrain of Trantor and further perfects his theory on psychohistory. The book continues on how he finally escapes and lays down the outline for the Foundation, a new empire more advanced and majestic than the previous.
I found this book to be intriguing and interesting. Asimov is great in developing his characters and makes them very believable and all have a great depth in their behaviors and thoughts. That is one reason why I liked this book. Another reason is because this book is paced much faster than the other Asimov books I've read, making it more suspenseful and an easier read. His older books were very technical and included lots of scientific words while this book has less of that and more excitement. Since Asimov wrote this book about 30 years after he wrote the Foundation Trilogy, he has had more time to think about the story and make it more believable. Also since he connected most of his works, this book also acts as a bridge between some of his works. I suggest this book to anyone who likes science fiction or just someone who wants a good book to read.

Prelude to Foundation by Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific science fiction writers of all time, is a prologue to his most acclaimed series, The Foundation Trilogy. The book traces the adventures Hari Seldon, a young mathematician who thinks he may have discovered a way to predict the future. Hari call his theory psychohistory, it is based in part on the Chaos theory and lots and lots of math. The one downside is that it can only foresee the future of a large population, so it cannot forecast, for example, the next day¡¦s events for a particular person. Hari goes to Trantor, the ¡§capital¡¨ of the Galactic Empire to attend a conference to present his ideas. Hari¡¦s ideas catches Cleon I ¡¦s eye and he suddenly becomes the most wanted man in the universe and is soon running and hiding from the imperial guards. He explores the terrain of Trantor in the process, looking at different civilizations and further perfecting his theory on psychohistory.
I find this book to be really intriguing and interesting, even though it¡¦s better to have read The Foundation Trilogy before reading the prelude, because there are many allusions and references that new readers might not understand. This book however, still stands very well on its own as an individual book and not part of a series. Asimov is great in character development, bringing all the characters to life with a depth in their thinking. This book is also pretty fast paced compared to some of the other Asimov books I¡¦ve read. Since Asimov wrote this book more than 20 years after The Foundation Trilogy, he has more time thinking everything through and therefore this book was more smooth and easier and more likeable to read. Asimov has also tied most of his major series together, including the Robot series and the Foundation series, along with other novels, so this book also acts as a bridge between works. Overall, the book is really good and I would recommend it to anybody just looking for a good book to read.

                        5 out of 5 stars Looking for Sci-fi Excitement?.......2000-05-08

Prelude to Foundation by Isaac Asimov, an immigrant from Petrovichi, Russia, is an action packed sci-fi thriller. This book is about a man who believes he has a formula to see the future. He must run from the government because he is afraid of what will happen if they find out how his formula works and release it to the public.

I have now read three books in the Foundation Series and can safely say this is Asimov's best. This is an exciting book that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting to learn about the strange worlds inside the author's vast imagination. You'll never guess what happens next because around every corner is the unexpected. This book leaves you hanging until the very end.

                        Book Description

Mainstream economics was founded on many strong assumptions. Institutions and politics were treated as irrelevant, government as exogenous, social norms as epiphenomena. As an initial gambit this was fine. But as the horizons of economic inquiry have broadened, these assumptions have become hindrances rather than aids. If we want to understand why some economies succeed and some fail, why some governments are effective and others not, why some communities prosper while others stagnate, it is essential to view economics as embedded in politics and society. Prelude to Political Economy is a study of this embeddedness; it argues for an 'inclusive' approach to institutions and the state. Modern economics recognizes that individuals' pursuit of their own selfish ends can result in socially suboptimal outcomes -- the Prisoner's Dilemma being the stark example. It has been suggested that what we need in such an eventuality is 'third-party' intervention, which can take the form of imposing punishment on players. Kaushik Basu objects to this method of wishing third parties out of thin air. He argues that if a third party that could impose its will on others were available, then it should have been modeled as a player to start with. The adoption of such an inclusive approach has implications for our conception of the state and the law. It means that the law cannot be construed as a factor that changes the game that citizens play. It is instead simply a set of beliefs of citizens; and, as such, it is similar to social norms. What the law does for an economy, so can social norms. The book discusses how the nature of policy advice and our conception of state power are affected by this altered view of the state and the law. As corollaries, the book addresses a variety of important social and philosophical questions, such as whether the state should guarantee freedom of speech, whether determinism is compatible with free will, and whether the free market can lead to coercion.

4 out of 5 stars Remodelling government into game-theoretic reasoning.......2001-03-12

This is a delightful and well-argued account of how government may be endogenised in economic analysis. The author would have us believe that government as an actor is in the same category as a consumer or an entrepreneur. Basu bravely questions conventional wisdom about assumptions held regarding institutions in economic analysis. Ambitiously titled "A Study of the Social and Political Foundations of Economics", the best part of this book are the author's numerous examples to show how economists have a poor understanding of motives, powerbases and collective action. There are just a few typographical errors (for instance the missing curve I in Figure 9.2 on page 207). However, what stops me from giving it five-star rating is that the book does have some conceptual infirmities (for instance, the author confuses the notion of government with the concept of nation-state, collective action is insufficiently explored, unconscious group processes not hypothesised at all, the terms lawful and legal are occasionally used interchangeably etc.). The most intellectually stimulating part of the book is the appendix that takes us through a hilarious account of the Fallacy of the Ignored Bridging Function. This was not an easy book to walk off from and I am glad to have finished it at one sitting. The author's clarity of expression and his sense of humour make this a book to remember and to recommend to others.

Be careful. This book is dangerous. It explores with startling freshness the most important question you could ever ask, and offers with breathtaking courage the most extraordinary answer you could ever imagine.

That answer is so theologically revolutionary and so spiritually empowering that it could change the course of human history. If embraced, it most certainly will change your life.

There are people and institutions in the world, long in place and long in power, that want neither of these outcomes to occur. They would rather that you put this book down right now.

                                    It's up to you.

5 out of 5 stars What God Wants.......2007-07-19

First of all, I was compelled to read this book as I have loved others by Neale Donald Walsch.
I picked it up and finished it a couple hours later. In my opinion it simplified the entire spiritual journey for me. Without negating belief systems/religions it offers a new fresh new prospective of God to the human experience on this planet.
I had a deep feeling of peace and contentment upon finishing the book and I would recommend it highly to the spiritual seeker.

5 out of 5 stars a courageous acknowledgement of who we really are.......2007-05-11

As an integral part of the "all that is", I have the power to transcend the behaviors driven by the reptilian and mammalian brains to create my experience and resulting reality, consciously and by choice

"Think only what you choose to experience
Say only what you choose to make real
Do only what you choose to demonstrate as your highest reality"

one of many useful insights from "What God Wants" which refresh material which may have been previously learned and integrated, but can never be heard enough. This book is particularly useful to disentangle the reader from polarized religious thinking by means of a heartfelt appeal to our rationality, while still honoring the value of faith traditions to our spiritual development. For these and all other audiences I highly recommend it! I encourage you to get the audio book as the option to simply listen with closed eyes in a meditative state can be a welcome alternative to reading, and Neale's expressive voice adds an emotional dimension to the work.

Based on Neale's explicit references throughout this book, I've ordered related material from the following authors which will serve to deepen the hues of Neale Donald Walsch's painting, in our relationship to our experience of "now", and our power to manifest reality through intent

In Neale's work I'm next on to Tomorrow's God: Our Greatest Spiritual Challenge

Jalaluddin Rumi, perhaps the most revered of Sufi mystics, offered this advice:

God has given us a dark wine so potent that, drinking it, we leave the two worlds.
God has put into the form of hashish a power to deliver the taster from self-consciousness.
God has made sleep so that it erases every thought.
God made Majnun love Layla so much that just her dog would cause confusion in him.
There are thousands of wines that can take over our minds.
Don't think all ecstasies are the same!
Jesus was lost in his love for God. His donkey was drunk with barley.
Drink from the presence of saints, not from those other jars.
Every object, every being, is a jar full of delight.
Be a connoisseur, and taste with caution.
Any wine will get you high. Judge like a king, and choose the purest,
the ones unadulterated with fear, or some urgency about "what's needed."
Drink the wine that moves you as a camel moves when it's been untied,
                                    and is just ambling about.

I think you'll find that the contents of Neale's "jar" fits the bill for quality

1 out of 5 stars Will the next Joseph Smith please stand up.............2007-04-17

The author of this work apparently is trying to set up his own religion. Judging from the comments I have read about his work, he is succeeding. The text bashes any established religious belief the author can think of. He than adds his own twists to "What God Wants". I would not reccommend this read to anyone unless you are studying cultist beliefs.

                                    5 out of 5 stars I just loved it........2007-04-10

what can I say, I just loved reading it. it touched me and I wont even try to figure out what "god" wrote it - its just plain fun to read. highly recommended.

                                    Mr. Walsch...excellent work, again!
we have most of the books written by this author and love it.
this book is far the most amazing book I've read this year (and we read a lot!) The content makes you think and if every one on the planet has read it, I trully believe the world would be a better place...a different world!
