Book Description

As the American Revolution rages on the mainland, the British Navy prepares for action at sea. Against a growing fleet of American and French privateers, the navy must maintain its blockade of Washington's vital military supplies. Caught up in the turmoil, junior officer Richard Bolitho finds himself having to make momentous decisions in the heat of battle—decisions that could affect the lives of many men and, perhaps, even the fate of nations.

4 out of 5 stars J Crowe book raven.......2005-08-21

For Kent fans this book, and others by this publisher, offer a good replacement for those issued in smaller commercial paperback edition some years ago. Other books in this series have better action and plot, but this a good point to join Bolitho, and his friends, as the adventure begins.

5 out of 5 stars Another great sea story by Alexander Kent.......2003-12-13

Richard Bolitho is assigned in this story as fourth lieutenant on the 80 gun two-decker third rate ship-of-the-line, Trojan. The year is 1777 and they are anchored off Staten Island as part if the inshore squadron under Admiral Coutt. Trojan's captain is the remote Captain Pears, and the first lieutenant a man named Cairns. In our modern navy, Cairns would be called the Executive Officer--next under the captain in the chain-of-command.

There is much action for Trojan, both as convoy escort, and in attacking a fort in North Carolina and again in the Carribean. Bolitho is of course heavily involved, in shore parties, as well as sea battles, and eventually gets temporary command of a prize and undergoes a sea battle in his own command.

This is a great series, and Kent (a pseudonym) displays more than a speaking acquaintance with the royal navy, its customs and conditions, in the late 18th century (not the 19th, as the Library Journal says in their review).

This is the third in the Richard Bolitho series, preceded by Midshipman Bolitho, and Stand into Danger. I am currently reading the fourth book in the series, Sloop of War. It is a thoroughly entertaining series, especially (but not exclusively) for aficianados of sea stories, and particularly historical square-riggers.

I recommend that the reader begin with the first book of the series, Midshipman Bolitho, and read them in order as they portray the protagonist, Richard Bolitho, through his career in sequential order. Each story does stand alone, however.

It is interesting to see the American Revolution through the eyes of an officer in the Royal Navy.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best sea-story series around.......2002-10-14

This is the first Richard Bolitho novel written, and the fourth by the series internal chonology. Bolitho begins the spring of 1777 as Fourth Lieutenant in the eighty-gun Trojan lying in New York harbor. Because of the death in action of one of his superiors and the capture of another, he ends as Second Lieutenant and then, to his surprise, as prize master of a captured American brig -- during the operation of which he manages to grab yet another enemy ship, which is more than enough to give him his step to Commander in the next book! Bolitho is an officer in the Hornblower mode -- self-possessed, self-critical, and sometimes prey to self-doubts -- which is to say, he's closer in some ways to a late-20th century man than a true denizen of the 18th century (like O'Brien's Jack Aubrey). The chracterizations are carefully done and the action is clearly described without being overly technical (also a difference from O'Brien). Note: I personally find series like this more interesting when the characters are younger and lower in rank, fighting smaller vessels. Flag rank tends to remove the officer -- and the reader's viewpoint -- too far from the "front lines."

4 out of 5 stars A nasty war.......2001-12-27

This volume in the long Bolitho series has added value for North Americans. It takes place along and off the east coast of the American colonies early in their rebellion. Here we have an English view to match (and out-write and out-excite) the American view purveyed by James Nelson in his Biddlecomb series. Bolitho has the distinct advantage (to American readers) of growing up in the British Navy earlier in history than most of the other fictional naval heroes from the Age of Fighting Sail, who are confined to the Napoleonic World Wars postdating the American Revolution.

4th Lt. Bolitho is now small fry on a large third-rate (80-gun) ship. Tasked to supress rebel privateers working close inshore, duty combines endless waiting, tense anticipation, and the sudden shock of small and bloody actions. Bolitho is centrally and most audaciously involved in successive fierce actions, 2 in small boats, 1 between brigs, 1 aboard a 3rd-rate, and once in the taking of a fort ashore. As we see the chances of battle visibly empty the ranks above him, he advances by skill and survival. Kent does a great job of developing characters here, as we can even understand the motivations of the arrogant and the cowardly officers with whom Bolitho is juxtaposed, and with whom he must deal at critical moments. In the course of rising in rank Bolitho collects another devoted acolyte, a midshipman, and begins to build a reputation in the fleet for dash and success through unorthodox, bloody, and killing conflicts.

The narrative structure is somewhat loose and episodic. The cover art is exciting and "ripped from the very pages" of this novel, but there are absolutely no other visual aids like maps, sail plans, or ship diagrams. Kent focuses on exciting action rather than technical details, and from the point of view of the seamen and under officers in these early novels. So far Bolitho has been blessed with mostly competent and empathetic superiors rather than hacks or unprofessional political appointees, and visibly grows in the abilty to command.

3 out of 5 stars Good nautical fiction.......2000-12-29

Kent's writing here (and in v.1&2) isn't geared for the ultra-knowledgeable Jack Tar, but for those whose feet are at least damp from the sea spray. No foot notes, but not much exotic vocabulary, either.

The writing style and non-stop adventure seem better suited for an action movie or adolescent reading. Now, that said, it would make a great action movie, and I would encourage younger kids to read it.

If you're shoaled on O'Brian's highly technical writing, give this a try. Chock full of adventure, a young boy is growing up in the Royal Navy. There are the continuing steotypes he uses to learn from (the overly-harsh lieutenant, the distant captain, etc.)

Bonus for us Yanks, this volume is set in America during the Revolution.

A good read: quick, easy. Read it to your kids, just to get them loving the sea early.

        Book Description

A Gallant Company goes beyond the bestselling Great Escape by Paul Brickhill and tells the only full and complete account of the dramatic escape of Allied airmen from Stalag Luft III in World War II that was the basis for the hit movie The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen.

On the night of March 24-25, 1944, seventy-nine Allied airmen clambered through a tunnel at Stalag Luft III in eastern Germany in the final act of what history and Hollywood have dubbed "The Great Escape." Built around a cast of colorful and engaging characters from every corner of the world, it describes their ongoing struggle to outwit their captors. It is a tale of ingenuity, perseverance, courage, and is a testament to what ordinary men can achieve under extraordinary circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Some Novel Information about the Great Escape.......2006-03-31

Most of the information presented in this book is the same or very similar to that provided in 1950 by Paul Brickhill's classic book on the Great Escape. Among the novel information in this book is a greater emphasis on the biographies of the escapers as well as the postwar trials of the German criminals responsible for murdering 50 of the 73 recaptured escapes.

Vance also discusses the problem of Harry turning out 20-30 feet short of the woods in somewhat greater detail than most if not all other books on the Great Escape. Interestingly, there was an earlier hint of this problem. While still digging the exit shaft, the tunnelers heard the sounds of trucks on the nearby road, and began to suspect that the exit shaft was too close to the road and thereby short of the woods. But a recheck of the computations failed to disclose any error in surveying. One wonders, then, why Harry came up short of the woods. Vance presents simple information that underscores the challenges of land surveying without proper equipment. It turns out that, when an exterior tree (with its necessary wide trunk) was forced to serve as the surveyors' transit, a small error in measured angle added up to a significant error in estimated distance. Perhaps this explains Harry's excessive shortness.

There is a novel map of Sagan and the villages around it. Vance also provides detail about some of the blind spots in the wire (a fact that inspired the baseball-throwing escape attempt by Steve McQueen in the film). It turns out to be a problem of visual perspective: The goon towers were so far apart that the wire would bunch together when viewed from a distance at a steep angle. Ironically, increasing the platform size of the goon towers created new blind spots directly underneath the towers!

5 out of 5 stars The Great Escape -Just Who Were the Fifty?.......2001-12-13

This book gives a background to each of the Fifty RAF and Allied officers who was murdered by the Gestapo on re-capture from Operation 200, post-war named The Great Escape. It is well researched and goes into great detail. At times it is rather poignant, especially when a survivor of Stalag Luft 3 visits the parents of one of the Fifty after the war. Jonathan Vance has a very readable style and it is an excellent book for people like me to want to know more about the central characters in a true war story, where they came from and what happened to them after the war, etc. All this is in this book.

A Gallant Company: The Men of the Great Escape must be regarded as a companion book to Paul Brickhill's The Great Escape.

5 out of 5 stars A great story, told well........2001-01-20

A welcome addition to the escape literature family. The focus is on the events within the Luft Stalag III itself, but there are quick sketches of the men's lives before the war, captures, and early escape attempts (althought this makes it sadder since one knows what's coming). The only weakness is a lack of footnotes, or bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent addition to the genre.......2001-01-03

For those who are fans of the "prison escape" genre, this book is an excellent addition to the growing number of books which cover that most famous of mass escapes, the March 1944 "great escape" from Stalag Luft III.

If, like myself, you have read and loved Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape", but found yourself wanting more and deeper information, this book is a goldmine.

During the prelude and epilog sections of the Brickhill book, the reader is teased with brief glimpses of people, places and events which are relevent to the main story, but which are (necessarily) not examined in detail. Some examples include the many early escape attempts by some of the Great Escape principals, the other prison camps in the Luftwaffe system, and the stories of most of the actual escapers themselves.

"A Gallant Company" addresses all these issues. The reader gets to know each and every remarkable man who went through that tunnel, what circumstances brought them into the war, what role they played in the escape organization, and their fate following the escape. Individually and collectively, their story is an extraordinary one. Jonathan Vance's telling of it is engrossing and highly readable.

This is not a book for the reader who is unfamiliar with the basic story, however. I would strongly recommend a read through the Brickhill book first -- a rewarding experience in itself. (Note: please, don't assume that the movie version is enough to cover this ground! A *fine* film, but a highly fictionalized adaptation!).

Taken together with "The Great Escape" and Arthur Durand's excellent "Stalag Luft III - The Secret Story", Jonathan Vance's "A Gallant Company" provides as complete a picture as any escape story fan could possibly want.

A minor quibble - I couldn't locate a source or citations section in this book. Where did Vance's wealth of information come from? I assume from personal interviews with camp survivors and family members, and many of the same sources named in the Durand book.

"Charming the Snake" can be seen as the sequel of "Romance at the Edge: In Other Worlds" because MaryJanice Davidson's novella 'Savage Scavenge' is also set in the Minneapolis of 2072 that MJD first presented in 'Beggarman, Thief'. Dr Gladys Loder is hoodwinked by purple-haired, cherry-eyed mutant Jasper Savage, but it's okay, because she gets to take her own payback... much to Jaz's outrage. Very funny story (too short though), it makes the book worth buying all by itself.

Camille Anthony's 'Carte Blanche' is also pretty good. The background story is not really believable - it seems clumsily tacked together to serve the protagonists' story... and the prologue is so irrelevant, what the heck is it doing there! - but the bumps in Chastity and Darian's relationship make for a good read.

As for 'Seducing the Saint' by Melissa Shroeder... bof. Liberty and Brady are boring, and there is this big build-up about the recluse and savage Funkai with their strange sexual practices but the fall really comes short. This story, you can skip.

4 out of 5 stars Some seductions, few snakes........2006-02-21

This is an three-author collection of alien futures with a too-short, short story by MaryJanice Davidson which is set in a story-line with references to characters first introduced in a previous book's short story. All the characters and the plot are fun, the sex is hotish, and it is over way too quickly. The second short story by Melissa Schroeder found the usual intrepid girl, searching for her father, through dangerous alien jungles with a former lover. Sex-filled plot was predictable, but the story was a good read, albeit with no real surprises. The third story by Camille Anthony was a fun read, with somewhat more depth and story to the characters, but still a little bit simplistic. It did, however, have a bit more plot than the other two efforts, and had some hot scenes.

Nonetheless, few of the people or settings in the three stories were particularly well fleshed-out, with the possible exception of a couple of the background people and setting in the MaryJanice Davidson story, and that might be because we already had met some of them in an earlier story.

All in all, still a fun, very quick read, but not the best from any of the authors. The sexual encounters were just fine, not super hot, but enough to keep one's interest for a while. I wish the ratings included a + and a -...I would prefer to give this book a 3+ rather than a 4, but, why quibble? End result, I don't regret buying the book.

I have to say I was a little hesitant to purchase this book, at first. I'm not an anthology reader. I prefer to sink my teeth into a good book and hang on for the long haul with the characters. But, that said, I am a HUGE MJD fan, so I had to have it. MaryJanice Davidson's SAVAGE SCAVENGE was a fun albeit short story. I wish there had been more, but SAVAGE SCAVENGE was a delectable read. SEDUCING THE SAINT, truly the meat of the anthology, is written by a new author to me, Melissa Schroeder. I'd not seen her work before, but I will be looking now. This mouth-watering yummy short grabbed my attention. Humor, action, and sensuality all blended together into a perfect mix in SEDUCING THE SAINT. CARTE BLANCHE by Camille Anthony rounded out this power-packed anthology offered by another newcomer I'd not head of Loose Id, LLC. Ms. Anthony's characters Chastity and Dare were very unique and enthralling. All in all, I truly enjoyed this anthology and will not be hesitant to purchase another in the future. If you enjoy short stories with strong characters, lots of laughs, well then, this is the compilation for you!

4 out of 5 stars Melissa Schroeder's story makes this book.......2005-07-03

Seducing the Saint by Melissa Schroeder is the only reason to buy this book. Her story has heart and soul. The characters are 3 dimensional and wonderfully quirky. Saint and Libby are old friends and old lovers. Libby needs Saint to help find her father who has disappeared searching for a famous emerald. The journey takes them to another planet, they meet strange people with even stranger customs. They learn about the people they are now rather than the people they were, along the way and discover that the old feelings are still there. The story was hot but still had heart.

The story by Mary Janice Davidson was very unsatisfying. It was too short, only 49 pages. It has a beginning and an end, but no middle, nothing in it to make us care about the characters. It was a continuation of one of her previous stories but one I hadn't read, so I could not really relate or get into this one before it was over.

Camille Anthony's story was also unsatisfying to this reader. I like hot reads, but I like them to have a story too. This one was mostly just sex with little story. The end ties things up, but you are told what every thing was about rather than seeing it happen. The only thing we saw was the sex and after the first couple times, it was old. I wanted to know the characters and wasn't given the chance.

                  1 out of 5 stars What a bore!.......2002-03-19

I was delighted to find this book and admired the author for going the self-publishing route. To my dismay, the story seemed to go nowhere. I kept wondering what the story was really going to be about but never really thought there was a focus. This book was very, very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Charming The Snakes.......2001-01-10

Charming the Snakes has all the ingredients of the Great American Thriller, money, sex and murder, but not necessarily in that order. What raises it above the 'run of the mill pot-boiler' are the constants twists that never quite lead the reader where they might think the plot is going. Charles Winnickey's central anti-hero character should not be likeable, yet the author has painted a word picture of him that makes it difficult not to identify with him for much of this unusual book. It is all part of a literary mix that intrigues and often grips.

5 out of 5 stars Charming the Snakes.......2000-11-24

This book was a refreshing change from most "first in a series books". I felt as though the story was told in such a way as to allow the reader to become personal with the characters involved. The authors ability to describe his surroundings lends itself to a realistic and very believable image. I believe that most people will identify with many aspects of this book, and wish they had the strength to be able to confront their own"Snakes".

Looking forward to the next book.

                        Book Description

Merciless attacks by an invincible alien force have left the New Republic reeling. Dozens of worlds have succumbed to occupation or annihilation, and even the Jedi Knights have tasted defeat. In these darkest of times, the noble Chewbacca is laid to rest, having died as heroically as he lived--and a grief-stricken Han Solo is left to fit the pieces of his shattered soul back together before he loses everything: friends, family, and faith.

Refusing help from Leia or Luke, Han becomes the loner he once was, seeking to escape the pain of his partner's death in adventure . . . and revenge. When he learns that an old friend from his smuggling days is operating as a mercenary for the enemy, he sets out to expose the traitor. But Han's investigation uncovers an even greater evil: a sinister conspiracy aimed at the very heart of the New Republic's will and ability to fight--the Jedi.

Now Han must face down his inner demons and, with the help of a new and unexpected ally, honor Chewbacca's sacrifice in the only way that matters--by being worthy of it.

                            5 out of 5 stars perfect paganism.......2007-06-18

Natural Atheism is a brilliant book that effectively discusses everything a person needs to know about the conflict between relgion and reason. A tribute to rational thinking and a handbook for those who have always been suspicious of fairy tales, superstions, and all similar malarky. Eller makes it clear that the burden of proof must always be borne by those making the outrageous claims, as opposed to those intelligent enough to be skeptical. A perfect book, and perhaps the final word on the issue, because once you understand that we're not obligated to prove that there's no such thing as Santa or the Easter Bunny, then there's not really a lot more that needs to be said about either, and the same principle applies to religion.

Mr. Eller does a fine job of filling the gap often present in atheist literature; that gap being, coupling a through discussion of "rational thought" with the various discussions for or against the justification of god belief. The text was written in a clear and concise manner; was easy to read and simplified many complex concepts. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every person ... middle school and above.......2007-04-10

One of the best books I have every read on the subject of rational/logical, critical thinking. Should be taught as a required course in every middle school and high school in America. It's not just about reading religious texts (e.g. the Bible(s)), but about questioning everything you see, hear, read, watch and are asked to believe in, as well as demanding verifiable, duplicatable evidence prior to intellectual acceptance.

William James' pattern of pragmatic argument is revised to defend contra-causal free will in the strong form of Kantian moral autonomy, which enables people to choose what they ought regardless of any contrary inclinations. With moral autonomy we have a moral theory under which we revise Kant's moral arguments into genuine moral arguments to give a moral condemnation of maxims to the effect: I will allow my reason to convince me that there can be no moral God who brings it about that it is as it ought to be with each human being.
