Book Description

In the year, 354 A.D., Julian, a sheltered scholar and pacifist lives in peace-until a summons from Emperor Constantine the Great changes the young man's life forever. Dispatched to Gaul to help reclaim a beaten Roman territory from German barbarians, Julian displays a surprising and brutal genius for survival against impossible odds. Emerging as an unlikely hero and adored by a legion of zealots, his untapped ambition is ignited-to reign as the new emperor. It's a position of power that'll test the loyalty of his friends, stir the ire of enemies, and cast an ominous shadow over his mad, and most magnificently impossible conquest of all...From the author of the acclaimed The Ten Thousand comes a breathtaking recreation of the historic rise to power of a ruthless yet unlikely leader plunged into the chaos of war-and his shocking fall that would become one of the most fascinating mysteries of the ages. A novel of courage and conviction, of loyalty and betrayal, of personal victory and dark ambition, Gods and Legions is epic storytelling at its most riveting.

The key to GODS AND LEGIONS is its narrator. Caesarion, physician to two emperors, begins as a bright scientist who likes to push the boundaries of reseach. Contradictorily, he is also a 4th century Christian, and in Caesarion Christianity is gradually winning. As a Christian's twisted view of Emperor Julian, GODS AND LEGIONS is a cultural study of the Roman Empire.

Caesarion begins as a friend of young student Julian, the only surviving male cousin of Emperor Constantius. Julian survives because his love of books seems to make him harmlessly unambitious. But Constantius needs a figurehead to represent Roman power in the West. Placed in Gaul, Julian flowers into a brilliant general and administrator. His sense of justice and his sympathy for Rome's subjects make him immensely popular. As so often happened in the Roman Empire, Julian is acclaimed Emperor by his people.

While Julian comes into his own, Caesarion's disenchantment grows. For most of the book there is a strict correlation between their attitudes: Julian's headed up, Caesarion's headed down. Like all good Christians of the time, to Caesarion religious tolerance would be a sin, and Caesarion will eventually be declared a saint. Trapped by his sense of duty in a grossly uncongenial position, he becomes grim and disapproving. From the moment Julian declares that he follows the Hellenistic gods, Caesarion believes him mad; it is very clear in the text that all of Caesarion's later accounts of Julian are colored by the Christian view of Julian as the Antichrist.

Was Julian murdered in Persia by someone among his own troops? We have no evidence of that, and Julian was stabbed in battle. He didn't stand behind with his generals, observing; he fought. Ford says that either army might have been using the type of spear that killed him. Julian did the same thing as Napoleon did -- led his troops beyond their supply lines. Napoleon's troops didn't kill him. Maybe the murder theory is just another case of the victors rewriting history.

Gore Vidal's JULIAN has a delicious, satirical approach that hurts the powerfully dramatic GODS AND LEGIONS by comparison, but agrees with Ford that the murder theory makes a better story. I'm going to have to track down the writings of Julian and Ammianus Marcellinus, and see for myself if I agree with either novel.

3 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the book overall, but got "bogged down" in some of the battle descriptions. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars OK... I think I've got it...........2007-02-15

This book helped me understand what I am looking for in an historical fiction. (deep breath) Steven Saylor (Mysteries of Ancient Rome series) does not hold my interest.... Simon Scarrow (Under the Eagle) is modern writing writ small for the epic that is Rome. But Michael Curtis Ford... ahhh ... If you understand the humor in this line, you will love him. Ready ? Here goes... " I believe he was a Spartan" muttered Julian laconically'. Was that funny to you? If so, Michael Curtis Ford is your cup of tea. Writing circles within circles as the ancient narrarator struggles with his own style. The history is tight as the soon-to-be mad emperor Julian undoes, unstrings, and unravels what Constantine the Great sought to do. Julian reverts to paganism and heads, where else, for Persia and his own Waterloo.(sorry for my own very mixed metaphor) This after reluctantly becoming a Roman warrior, succeeding his uncle, (the Roman emperor), overthrowing the Gauls, and in general, having an adventure that makes the AD 300's come to life. I went in ignorant of this particular time period. I came out smarter and better for the experience. This is a meaty novel, not pure history, but not the pap Saylor and Scarrow churn out, either. This is on par with Colleen McCollough and the Grass Crown / Caesars Women series. Call me middle brow, but I'm havin' some fun here !!

4 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN.......2006-10-30

A take on Emperor Julian, the last Roman emperor, who tried to eradicate Christianity as the main religion of the Roman Empire (then situated mostly in Constantinople, now Istanbul).

A lot of it seems to be Historically accurate though there are some areas that are considered to be questionable and the author does take liberties in certain areas where we really do not know, for sure, what happened.

Great battles and ideas, especially in the beginning against the Persian elephants and the Germanic tribes fooling the Romans along the river.

The take on Julian's reasons for having problems with Christianty were done well enough, but, for such a hot topic, they could have spent more time detailing it as we are mostly a Christian country and a superb reason is needed for people to understand why one might want to not make it the main religion.

2 out of 5 stars Why Put Forth the Effort?.......2006-07-24

Gore Vidal's "Julian" is one of my favorite all-time books, so I thought I might enjoy another on the subject. All-in-all I was disappointed and only managed to make it about 3/4 of the way through with much effort. Though the author's writing style is quite readable, writing a story from the viewpoint of someone who diliked Julian and is supposed to be his friend just didn't cut it with me. The self-righteous Christian got old real fast. And the secondary characters like Oribasius and Maximus were so vividly done by Vidal as to make them a jarring, discordant note in this work. The only way it was in any way better than Vidal's work is the battle descriptions, which are well done.
To me it was like someone trying to re-write Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird or A Confederacy of Dunces. It can't be improved upon, so why put forth the effort?

The Twelve Quickies of Christmas Vol 1
I liked this book because the stories were fast reads and but still interesting and just as HOT as ever. I bought this book because it featured the August men in it, and I absolutly loved the August Men ( Marly's Choice, Seducing Sarah & Heather's Gift ). I fell inlove with the characters and couldn't wait for them to come in the mail. I love books like this, the hotter the better and this was extremely HOT!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Twelve Quickies.......2006-07-20

I have enjoyed other books by Lora Leigh, and I was very pleased with this bookwith just not her but the other authors, what a wonderful blend of stories. It is great that a author can get a story across in short form as well as her longer books.
Lora thank you for the "QUICKIES"

3 out of 5 stars Lora Leigh Fan.......2006-02-23

I only bought this book for the short story by Lora Leigh that completes the series for the August brothers. It was great and I would give her story a 5.

The other stories were okay but I would not have bought this book if Lora Leigh was not in it. I would suggest that you buy it if you are looking for a specific author. If not, I would pass on it.

5 out of 5 stars Make Me Believe.......2005-04-25

How I wished there was more to this book! I couldn't put it down. Bring on the tissues and sniffles. Ms. Walker takes into a world you of Make Believe. Making you believe there is a Santa Claus and that we are not to old to believe. Caring and loving someone or something so deeply. Sharing our memories, talking to ourselves has us believing in guardian angels. This is a story for you.

Book Description

Passion and a Pear Tree By Tawny Taylor Book 7 in the Twelve Quickies of Christmas series What does a prudish, self-proclaimed loner do when a nearly naked man jumps out of an oversized Christmas gift, sings a slightly racy version of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and promises to make her deepest desires come true? She goes for it, of course, and has the best twenty-four hours of her life. But at the stroke of midnight, the spell ends, and her happy holidays take an unexpected turn. Alone again, there's only one thing she wishes for: a little Christmas magic to bring back the man who taught her the joy of giving. A Christmas Phantasie By Kit Tunstall Book 8 in the Twelve Quickies of Christmas series After a bad marriage, Jakarta finds it difficult to commit to a future with the man she's now seeing. Teague has grown frustrated with her hesitation, believing she doesn't trust him. On their Christmas trip to Castle Phantasie, things come to a head. Jakarta must prove her trust in Teague by submitting to him, or their relationship will end. She loves him, but what he's asking for might be more than she can give. Snow Angel By Joey W. Hill Book 9 in the Twelve Quickies of Christmas series In her misspent youth, Constance used sex as a shallow substitute for the intimacy and love she craved. Fifteen years later, she whispers her deepest wish into Santa's ear at a Christmas benefit, only to discover he is someone who was part of that unfortunate and embarrassing time of her life. Mortified, she plans an early exit from the party, but Santa has different ideas. Sam Coble always wanted to get to know the girl behind the reputation, and now that she is an accomplished, independent woman, that determination spurs him to action. Constance is going to discover this particular Santa has a soft spot for naughty girls. He plans to give her everything she ever put on a Christmas list...and then some. Hot For Santa By Lacey Alexander Book 10 in the Twelve Quickies Of Christmas series Amy Finnegan has been attracted to Cole Bradshaw for years, but when he dons a Santa suit at the local mall and asks her to be his elf, her attraction turns into full blown lust. Yet when the entire holiday season passes with no response to her flirtations, (leaving the lacy undies she's been wearing beneath her elf dress untouched), Amy resolves to give up the chase. Cole's Christmas Eve invitation, (a thrilling night of eggnog and movies), is the wake up call Amy needs to get over her crush. Little does she know that Cole has planned a seduction, (complete with erotic Christmas gifts), that will turn her into his willing holiday slave. Before the night is over, the sexy man wearing nothing but a Santa hat will prove to Amy that it's more rewarding to be naughty than nice. Elf Song By Samantha Winston Book 11 in the Twelve Quickies Of Christmas Series Though he is in great demand at the court, Branagh, the Nutcracker Prince, has sought no mate and found no one to fill his needs. Melflouise Fairnight, once an archer in the elf militia, now a kitchen maid in the palace of the Sugar Plum Fairy wanted only to catch a glimpse of the secretive Nutcracker Prince. She never dreamed he'd desire her, or that his loving could free the elf song she'd kept caged since her husband's death. Their unexpected passion forces Branagh to make a terrible choice, between his kingdom and his woman. Christmas Angel By Lisa Marie Rice Book 12 in the Twelve Quickies of Christmas series Nicole Caron lost the love of her life on Christmas Eve. Now only the Christmas Angel can help her.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Blah.......2007-06-16

I have to agree with Linda's review. The only decent story was by Lisa Marie Rice and it is not her best by a long shot. Kit Tunstall's story was very disturbing/creepy and the rest of the stories had way too much B&D.

1 out of 5 stars The Twelve Quickies of Christmas Volume 2.......2007-05-12

The only thing worth reading was the Lisa Marie Rice short story and it is not her best work. This book was painful. Save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Snow Angel is Beautiful.......2007-02-23

WHO is Lisa Marie Rice?
WHAT can we do to assist her in writing as many books as quickly as possible?
WHEN will her next book come out?
WHERE did Ellora's Cave find this awesome author?
WHY would anyone believe 26 pages is a sufficient length to describe a fully fleshed out romantic couple?
HOW did Ms. Rice author such a beautiful romance that can take you from the depths of despair Nicole feels at the loss of her lover to a sad smile as she relives their love affair? All in 26 pages! I don't know of anyone else who's ever created so much on such a small canvas.
"Christmas Angel" the last story in the "12 Quickies of Christmas Volume 2," will not leave the reader with a bitter aftertaste as so many anthologies do. The dreaded question "Was that it?" hangs on the tip of my tongue all too often after I finish one, but not here.
Yes, yes, there are 5 other stories in this book and I'm sure those authors gave it their best shot. But let's not kid ourselves here: "Christmas Angel" is the only real reason to buy this book.
"Hot for Santa" by Lacey Alexander has some cute, sexy scenes. "A Christmas Phantasie" by Kit Tunstall is by turns weird, frightening and unrealistic (yep, put me right in the holiday spirit! :) "Passion and a Pear Tree" by Tawny Taylor might cause that previously-mentioned bitter aftertaste. "Snow Angel" by Joey Hill has some good moments. The other story is a twist on "The Nutcracker Suite" and is both odd and sexy.
Lisa Marie Rice has been compared to Linda Howard, Shannon McKenna and Suzanne Brockmann. Buy this book and if you haven't already experienced Ms. Rice's other books, try: "Midnight Man," "Midnight Run," "Midnight Angel," "Woman on the Run," and "Port of Paradise." You'll be hooked, just like the rest of us.

                Book Description

This very special gift set includes the three books that comprise Sylvia Browne's Journey of the Soul series: Book 1 God, Creation, and Tools for Life Does God exist? Was the world created, or did it evolve? Where am I in the big picture of the universe? Most people have asked these questions but have no clear answers. However, Sylvia does, and in this fascinating book, she shares her 40 years of investigation into these issues. Drawing from thousands of research sessions with Francine, her spirit guide, along with her own understanding of a number of riveting topics that are pertinent to humanity as a whole, you will have access to information that is mentally profound, spiritually moving, and eminently logical.

Francine, who resides on the Other Side, lives within the presence of God and has access to a wealth of knowledge about the nature of creation. Sylvia, then, becomes the human voice for Francine and is able to share the fruits of her wisdom. We are assured that God will respond to all questions—our job is to ask the right questions and be receptive to the answers we receive. In so doing, we gain valuable tools for life! Book 2 Soul's Perfection Sylvia and her guides help solve a great mystery in this fascinating book—namely, what is the meaning of life? Most human beings—and many teachers and great scholars— have pondered this question over the years, but there has never been a truly definitive answer. This leaves most of us with a feeling of being incomplete in some way. Here, Sylvia and her guides take you to that place within you where you can achieve a sense of intellectual and spiritual fulfillment. They explain that we are here to perfect our souls by absorbing God's knowledge. We are the experiencing side of God, where God is the primary intellect of creation. Soul's Perfection takes you through the complete scope of your soul's journey, from planning each incarnation on the Other Side to making life meaningful here on Earth. If you wish to stand proudly before God some day, then the concepts discussed here will bring you wisdom, depth, and spiritual insight.

Book 3 The Nature of Good and Evil We constantly see the "senseless violence" in our world, and it begs the question: "How can an all-loving God allow this to exist?" Indeed, many people simply reject any notion of God for this very reason. This third book in Sylvia's Journey of the Soul series gives you the philosophical framework to understand the nature of good and evil—and the role of God in the big picture. When you see how evil originated and why it thrives in our world, you're more prepared to face it and overcome it. Sylvia points out that you need not fear "evil spirits" or "curses"—which are merely stories bred from ignorance. And how would you like to serve as one of God's warriors of Light? Sylvia explains how to enlist! By combining her philosophical and theological views, Sylvia creates a spiritual umbrella that rises above traditional religion. All paths that lead to knowing God have merit—Sylvia simply invites you to know Him/Her in your own way, free of dogma and fear. Millions of people have witnessed Sylvia Browne's incredible psychic powers on TV shows such as Montel, Larry King Live, Entertainment Tonight, and Unsolved Mysteries; and she has been profiled in Cosmopolitan, People magazine, and other national media. Her on-target psychic readings have helped police solve crimes, and she astounds audiences wherever she appears. Sylvia is the author of numerous books and audios; is the president of the Sylvia Browne Corporation; and is the founder of her church, the Society of Novus Spiritus, located in Campbell, California.

I bought this for my mom for christmas and she loved it. She says they are great informative books

                5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-01-03

AS USUAL SYLVIA'S BOOKS ARE FASCINATING AND SO SO HELPFUL--MORE SO THAN
ANY BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ.

1 out of 5 stars A lot of paper could have been saved,.......2006-11-04

if all the "and"s, "very"s, and trite, overused adjectives were deleted. Ideas are repeated over again - sometimes in the exact same words. Everything Sylvia had to say could have been said in one book of less than 200 pages!

A friend recommended this series to me, and thank the Gods, she loaned me her set because I would have been very upset to have wasted any money on it. I plowed through every last word in the hopes that it would get better. No luck.

While I agree with a lot of the concepts she sets forth, some things are just too hard to believe (ie. colored lights flashing on a big board in heaven?). In addition, she contradicts herself and at times she simply does not know what she is talking about. ("Inca-Aztec culture"? No such thing as far as I have been able to ascertain.)

The writing style is juvenile. Stupidity is one of the things she berates throughout the books, yet she talks to her readers as if we are indeed stupid. If you want to read an intelligent discourse on the same topics she covers, I would suggest the Conversations with God series by Neale Donald Walsch.

Lastly, it got a little old hearing how wonderful/intelligent/unselfish and so on, Sylvia is as portrayed through the words of Francine. And how Sylvia's current reincarntion has just been so horrible and how nobody but someone as evolved as Sylvia could have possibly made it through. The effect was to make me feel like I was reading her fan mail.

Don't waste your time on this series. And definitely don't waste your money.

                4 out of 5 stars Not bad..interesting.......2006-08-23

Good for the newbie reading of Sylvia. Book 2 is the best of all of the three. Some themes are redundant and not clearly explained but that is probably why she has a plethora of books! She hides the info in other books so you buy more!

                5 out of 5 stars Sylvia Browne's Journey of the Soul-Box Set.......2006-07-25

It has been my life's passion to explore spiritual writings. I come from a Christian background and have read the Bible many times and in many versions. I have also read, the Gnostic literature, the Bagavagita, studied the Kabala for years and I have completed most of Blavatsky. Some people have no choice as to whether they are a student of the information of this nature, it is often 'do or die'. And it is like that for me, `do or die', I read it because I have too on some level. I have been studying these for over 30 years. And I have traveled extensively in pursuit of this undying quest, this unquenchable thirst that I have for these.

This Journey of the Soul-Box Set consists of three books. It has got to be the most simply stated and easiest to understand books of information about spirituality. You can read volumes about this stuff from various sources taking most of your life time to even scratch the surface. What Sylvia has done is taken everything that she studied for her whole life and put it into a nut shell. With the help of her spiritual guides she has written an easy to understand, comprehensive set of books on the subject.

I find what she says is very accurate and in keeping with truth. I have not found anything in any of the three books that contradicts the sound spiritual teachings found in all religions.

I sent a set of books to my sister who is in Hagedorn Mental Institution, a state facility in NJ. I would like to mention here that no one can get into a state facility unless they are inspected, certified and papered, legally insane. She has suffered with bi-polar disease and the like for more than 25 years. She is brilliant, perhaps genius and she is psychic as many of these people often are. She reads Shakespeare the Bible and physics. She writes poetry and makes paintings three pictures at a time. She hears voices and has visitors and many of her invisible guests are not benevolent to put it mildly. She often meets with her husband who was buried in Arlington ten years ago. She refers to her home as a 'landing strip'.

She is very receptive to Sylvia's books and this series in particular. She loves them. 'The information is so true.' she says, `I love these books, I can't put them down. They are helping me so much. This is the most helpful information on spirituality that I have ever read. This stuff is right on.' That is what she said.

She is only thru the first volume. When she completed it she started it over again. The upside down thinking was an important part of the information that I shared with her from book one. I asked her to read through all three then start over. She said that she has to read it twice. There is so much for her to understand that she has to read it twice. I have always been convinced that my sister had serious spiritual problems and was not really mental. I am hopeful that these volumes bring her to a new place.

I can only be thankful that finally I have found something on spirituality that she has latched on to. I would suggest for anyone intending to give this information to a patient in a mental institution to read the books first before giving it ti a loved one. It is important for them to have someone to talk to about it's content.

And I will encourage modern day Christians to read this information also. If anything we know that Jesus was a Nazarene and studied under the Essenes. Find out the portion you are missing in your program.
