Book Description
A complete guide to giving healthy and productive lives to deserving horses.
Customer Reviews:
Glad I found this book.......2007-05-13
I learned of this book title and author mentioned on the ASAP horse rescue website, and I'm very glad I did. A lot of careful thought goes into the decision to take on the lifelong commitment of adopting a rescued horse. This book brought up many easy to understand details I may not have considered properly before making a decision. Nothing speaks more clearly than experience. With all of the helpful references, it's a very useful and enjoyable read.
Wow, what a great read!!!.......2007-03-04
I found this book extremely informative and an enjoyable read. The author obviously writes from experience and with a desire to encourage responsible horse ownership. She offers helpful advice for first horse owners and outlines the issues involved when taking on a horse in distress. For those of us with soft hearts and a lack of good sense, when it comes to an animal is trouble, this is a handy and humorous guide that will help us do the most good where it is desprately needed.
Nicely Layed Out .......2007-01-23
This book complies basic information and is layed out well and a good starter book.. One thing I was disappointed is that it didn't really outline how to start up a Horse rescue but then again it didn't state that it did- A overall nice book !
Book Description
In Ebb, Nebraska, things are pretty much as they were fifty years ago–aside from that coffee shop–and that’s just the way folks like it. Plucky Wilma Porter is the proprietress of Ebb’s only Bed and Breakfast, and she knows everything there is to know in town: the mental state of Clara Tucker Booth Yune, a rich recluse who says only two words at a time; the gossip at Loretta Parson’s Bold Cut Beauty Salon; and the sad series of events that have led poor Calvin Millet to the edge of desperation. Calvin is the owner of Millet’s Department Store, a village mainstay for generations, but many fear that it–and the downtown–won’t survive his terrible run of bad luck.
Wilma prays for a miracle to save Ebb’s special way of life, but she’s surprised when it arrives in the form of a traveling salesman, if that’s what he is. Vernon L. Moore claims to peddle games of chance, but he sticks his nose in odd places and says things like, “uncertainty is the spice of life.” He is welcomed nonetheless, because he seems to have the power to change minds, save fortunes, and fix broken hearts.

Hope and support for anyone dealing with terminal illness.......2007-05-24
This book was a selection for our book club, and it was a good conversational piece. It would also be a good book for any church library.
It is one of three book about the traveling salesman, Vernon, so if you enjoyed it you could read more, and maybe even find peace for something that is effecting your life.
Thought provoking . . ........2007-04-16
It has been a long time since a novel has provoked the amount of personal reflection that this book did. Any book that can make me cry has touched me. I found Shaffner's paradoxes and corollaries interesting and worth discussing in a group setting. I am curious to know if the author is a member of any formal religious denomination? I appreciate his promoting a strong faith in God and the need for mankind to have hope, which should cause people of disparate religions to agree. Something that we can all take from the book is: Are the most memorable moments of our life REALLY all in past or can we anticpate more in the future that will supercede them? I have HOPE that the best is yet to come!
A sweet read.......2006-05-29
In today's bustling world, it's nice to read a simple story of human connections. And it's always nice to read about a slightly weird character and then realize that you know someone just like them! George Shaffner's first novel is an introduction to the folks of Ebb, Nebraska. When you close the book at the end, I believe you will have a smile on your face and a fondness for each of the characters who now feel like your very own neighbors. A sweet, pleasant, hopeful and humorous book.
I liked it.......2006-04-23
I really liked this novel. It was entertaining and kept my attention. I look forward to reading the other two books in this trilogy. The only problem that I had with it was even though you got involved with the characters and were interested in their lives, the characters never seemed examined enough. It felt a little bit like catching the last half of a tv show, you could figure out the storylines but you didnt how they got into that particular situation. Maybe that problem will get resolved after I read the other books. BOTTOM LINE: A few problems but still very enjoyable
I threw it across the room when I was done with it.......2006-03-29
What a disappointing book. It had real potential with a fascinating topic and I kept reading because I hoped that it would give me something to enjoy. It really failed. Not only was the writing just slightly better than what a high school senior would produce but it was also condescending and didactic in the worst way. Shaffner didn't trust his audience enough to give them complex characters or an original plot line. The list of cliched characters includes the bitter hopeless father, the angelic dying child, the greedy businessman, the no-nonsence narrator and her sassy best friend, and the mysterious stranger who comes into to town and redeems them all with his Eastern philosophical outlook disguised as midwestern wisdom. Reading it made me feel like I was in a Philosophy 101 class being taught by the professor who wrote the text book and charged you too much for it.

Customer Reviews:
A great combination: suspense and romance.......2006-08-15
Dixe Land has done it again. In Second Chances, she questions what love really is and how a long term relationship can move from routine to endangered in a blink of an eye. An incredible plotter, she combines the love angle with deadly suspense. I especially appreciated the characterization of the evil antagonist, the psychiatrist, as I'm a retired psychologist myself. When Grace enters the lair of the psychiatrist undercover, I couldn't put down the book until I learned what happened behind those closed doors. Read this now. You won't regret it. Joanne Clarey, author of Twisted Truth, Riddled to Death, Mysteries of Hummingbird Falls, and soon to come, Skinned.
Dixie Land is a great story teller!.......2006-08-13
Dixie Land is one of the finest story tellers I know. She writes about ordinary people who face extraordinary problems. In Second Changes she creates Grace Garret, a strong admirable woman whom you will feel as close to as your sister or your best friend. Grace's strength is challenged when her husband's secret life is revealed. But her love and devotion to family and friends sees her through. And Land always finds a way to give her characters a new and happy life in the end. Five stars! A must read.
Don't miss reading Second Chances.......2006-08-12
Romance-Suspense fans wanting to be intertained by a top-notch writer will find a jewel in Second Chances. The characters and dialog are crisp as the story moves seamlessly from scene to scene. The predicament in which Andrew and Grace find themselves is a nightmare feared my many, and one that is extremely difficult to overcome. Ms. Land has captured the essence of what it is to have a second chance at love. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Been a long time, since I've read one this good!.......2007-01-14
Move over Rosemary Rogers, to me this was a Steve and Ginny story and very well done indeed. One of my all time favorite couples were the tortured Steve and Ginny. They loved each other deeply but managed to have difficulties with trust, but were so passionate when they were together. Damiena and Alexa were exactly the same. They really truly loved each other. Yes, of course it was lust at first. Often lust comes first and then the couple gets to know one another and lust becomes love. Damien went after Alexa for all the wrong reasons. But what was so remarkable is he forgave her right away when he realized he was just totally wrong about her. And he set out to make the best of things, which was difficult do to, with his history. He really had no business taking a wife, but he did and he really did love Alexa deeply. It showed over and over again becuz he was willing to forgive some of her actions, understanding so much about how it is difficult to trust. And it is so important to understand how young Alexa was. How is such a young person able to really understand spying for ones country and how impossible a life like that can be. She just went on instinct and honor and at first she had it all wrong about Damien. But when he finally was honest with her it was still a challenge to believe. But over and over again this couple would put themselves into peril for each other and it was just so romantic and real. I cannot say enough about this book. I love to find books like this that you can truly get into such an emotional rollercoaster ride of a story with lots of passion. And this was 5 stars and more!! I guess if you want your characters totally black and white with no shades of grey then perhaps Damien and Alexa are not your couple but to me they were what romance novels are all about!!
Lots of sizzle...not alot of emotion........2006-06-26
Kat Martin is one of my favorite romance authors. She can always be counted on to be a little sexier than other authors. This book did not disappoint in that regard - there was alot of sizzle. However, I did not feel alot of emotion between these two characters.
Alexa betrayed Damien terribly. If she really loved him, she would have confronted him with her accusations instead of betraying his trust (and blowing his cover). She never really learns to trust him and it really got annoying after a while. I get annoyed with all of the political intrigue in romance novels, too. I know they are trying to put an interesting twist on romance, but it just bores me to tears.
This book is not reflective of Kat Martin's usual style. If you are new to her writing, check out some of her other books.
Highly enjoyable.......2003-07-04
This is not my favorite Kat Martin book, but I found it to be entertaining and a quick read. I would have finished this in less than 2 days, but my husband made me go to bed at our normal time even though I had less than 20 pages left. Grrrrr...
The only thing that got a little tiresome was the french used through the middle of the book, but fortunately for this spanish class taker, they were words that were relatively familiar from watching movies, etc. And if they weren't easy to figure out, you could just glance across them and move on.
I spent less than a buck on this book at a garage sale (I get most of mine at thrift stores, I read waaaayyy to fast to spend over $5 everytime... I read about 2 books a week) and it was well worth it. Take the time and read this book, you won't be disappointed.
Not My Favorite Type of Book But Still Good.......2002-06-26
This book has another of my pet peeves. The heroine thinks that she is above taking orders from someone more experienced in a situation than she is. Which causes trouble for everyone. Again this is a matter of trust and communication. Plus there are a lot of other things going on the muddy the water. Given all this I would still recommend the book, especially if you like the spy mystery plot.
I wanted to give this book a 3, but................2002-05-19
I really, really wanted to give Devil's Prize a 3 or higher. I was really anticipating reading Rayne's (Sweet Vengeance) sister's story. Alexandra/Alex/Alexa seemed very headstrong, if not intelligent in Sweet Vengeance. So, why when she gets her own story in Devil's Prize, does she act like a complete ninny?
The plot of this book is fueled by revenge. Damien Falon seeks Alexa out to avenge the death of his brother Peter. He believes that Peter's unrequited love for Alexa is what caused his death. After "winning" a night with Alexa, Damien compromises her, but he ends up married to her instead. Later on, Damien realizes that Alexa was not responsible for his brother's death, as he assumed, but by then he has laid a horrible ground for mistrust between his young bride and himself.
Alexa is impetuous in this book. Whether she is doing this to hide her grief at Peter's death or Ms. Martin is showing us through Alexa's actions how immature the heroine is, we may never know. I felt that Alexa's immaturity and mistrust is what caused Damien and she a lot of heartache and pain throughout the book.
We find out early that Alexa isn't responsible for Peter's death (although the "real" reason he died isn't revealed until the epilogue), and Damien tries to make amends. Still, she holds onto this mistrust, while claiming to fall in love with Damien. Her mistrust leads her to believe that her husband is a spy for the French, and, again, we see how her mistrust for Damien leads him into peril, danger, and harm. It seems like every time she struggled with her "love" for Damien, she ends up doing something stupid to contradict that.
I wanted the story of Alexa and Damien to work. There are some explosive and passionate love scenes in the book. But, I kept screaming in the back of my mind that Damien deserved better than Alexa!! And, when Alexa was getting herself into trouble, I kept praying that Rayne would appear to help her!!
Alexa does redeem herself toward the end of the book, but by then I was already so peeved at her, I didn't care. I only wish that Alexa had been more of a heroine instead of impulsive and immature. And if she hadn't betrayed Damien so many times, I would have believed she loved him.
Devil's Prize rates a 5 for Kat Martin; 4 for the sensuality, 5 for Damien, and Maybe a 1 for Alexa.

Book Description
When the internationally famous barbarian hero returned to comics, with an all-new fresh start by award-winning writer Kurt Busiek (JLA/Avengers, Astro City) and dynamic artists Cary Nord, Thomas Yeates, and Dave Stewart, the result was instant sell-outs and multiple printings to keep up with the demand. Now Conan's earliest adventures are collected in a handsome 192-page collection. Catch all the action and savagery as he wars with the murderous Vanir, meets the Frost Giant's Daughter, and is taken as a slave by the ancient sorcerers of Hyperborea! This top-selling new series faithfully expands on original author Robert E. Howard's literary creation.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-08-02
The stories here are ok--they should be, as one of them is a straight Howard take.
However, I have a big problem with the artwork. The painted, somewhat pastel at times indistinct style makes Conan look like an eyeless kobold at times, and at others like big-eyed wild madmen all over the place. Non-inked fuzzy style looks crappy, to me.
Growing up with Barry Windsor-Smith this is a change much for the worse.
I won't be reading any more of this with the same art style.
Great magazine!!.......2007-05-14
This could not be better! The drawings are fantastic! Storyline is very good, great characters. Brutally fantastic! You should have this in your comic collection, it will be worth to have it.
Awesome art and a great read.......2007-03-12
This is one of the few comics books that I enjoy to read not just for the great art but also the amazing story. Very well written book, it moves at a nice pace, lots of action and it's not afraid to pull any punches; it definitely caters to an adult audience.
The art by Cary Nord is fantastic, this book doesn't disappoint at any level.
Another great Conan .......2006-07-03
This is a compilation of various of Conans adventures when he was young. Great reading
Conan's Code.......2006-06-12
Conan is more than just the muscle bound barbarian that only thinks of women and riches, which I think is the opinion many who have not actually read a Conan book believe. He has a sense of honor and loyalty to his friends, even those he just met. Granted, he does get to indulge in the pleasures of life, but only after great suffering. He is a man that wants to have his food, drink and women and be left alone. But when the times come that he needs to step up, he will, and you'll regret waking the barbarian within.

Book Description
Description: Taking a job on an isolated island in the Sea of Norway, scientist Victoria Scott wants a quiet place to finish her doctoral thesis. But Victoria isn't prepared for the strange shadows outside her cabin window, the rumors of a murderous hag who sucks one's soul during sleep, and the tales of mythic monsters lurking in the forest. More frightening than the island's nightmarish mysteries: to Victoria, everything is hauntingly familiar. When an enigmatic stranger appears on the island, Victoria's sense of foreboding peaks. For she learns that they are connected by a conflict centuries old#151;one that can end only with her death#133;
Book Description
This collection of 14 stories from a Nebula, Hugo, Tiptree, International Horror Guild, and World Fantasy Award finalist takes the reader on a wonderful and nightmarish journey. Beginning with a midnight odyssey to a shadowland where vehicles feast on vagrants, this compilation includes stories in which Poe's final days are revealed, factory workers are exploited by an apparition of the Virgin Mary, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart pinwheels through the corridors of time. Also included is a tale of an apocalyptic entity that hides in a Ukranian village, a contemplation on the horror that dwells in Jack the Ripper's pocket watch, and a brand-new novella that combines an interplanetary road story with more than a dash of Flash Gordon. Behind-the-stories notes by the author are also included.

Beguiling Bedevilments.......2007-06-27
As a regular reader of speculative fiction, particularly of the progressive and surreal variety, somehow I have remained ignorant of Gregory Frost's unique work. Well, better late than never. Frost examines the dark side of the human condition with a sly surrealism that is so subtle that it becomes creepy and disarming. Even in his occasional comedy tales - like this volume's sly opener "The Girlfriends of Dorian Gray." This collection is a multi-genre powerhouse of Frost's best work, but keep in mind that genre exercises such as supernatural creatures, science fiction gadgets, and fantasy settings are just window dressing for Frost's main phenomena of interest. Great examples are "A Day in the Life of Justin Argento Morrel" in a which a stereotypical sci-fi spaceship is the setting for an incisive tale of madness and betrayal, "Collecting Dust" which looks at the disintegration of the American family via a family that is literally disintegrating, and "The Bus" which uses a rather cheeky evil vehicle to examine how society feeds off the unfortunate. Frost also deserves props for his unique takes on historical fiction, like "In the Sunken Museum" in which Edgar Allan Poe is driven to real madness in a museum based on own his tales of madness, and "From Hell Again" which is an offbeat look at the old mystery of Jack the Ripper. And finally, the apotheosis of Frost's mastery is the stupendous "Madonna of the Maquiladora" - a devastating critique of human suffering and exploitation - which combines science fiction, religion, and social commentary more effectively than any short story I've ever seen. [~doomsdayer520~]
Greg Frost does it again.......2006-06-11
Gregory Frost's riveting collection of short stories, Attack of the Jazz Giants, is one of those books that makes you feel like your're sneaking around in the shadowy little rooms inside the haunted house of his brain. Stories rage from darkly funny to darkly jolting, and along the way you get to wander down some extremely strange side-corridors (such as in the title story) and you wind up in wildly unexpected places.
It's the kind of book where you do one story at a time, rather than gallop cover to cover, because you want to chew the bark off these tales to get to the real heart of each one. They stay with you, and they work on you.
Frost is a great novelist, but he's a master of the short story.
Readers can't help but enjoy this imaginative author's work.......2006-03-07
There's never a dull moment in Attack of the Jazz Giants. No weak entries, no experimental drivel, nothing derivative, just good stories from start to finish.
The collection begins well with "The Girlfriends of Dorian Gray," the humorous story of a glutton who passes on the cost of sins to his dates, moves on to biting social satire and commentary with "The Madonna of the Maquiladora", "Collecting Dust" and "The Bus", segues into science fiction with "A Day in the Life of Justin Argento Morrel" and "Divertimento" before moving back into (admittedly black) humor in the title story "Attack of the Jazz Giants" at its midpoint.
The second half begins with three dark tales ("Some Things are Better Left", "Lizaveta", "In the Sunken Museum"), veers towards sarcasm on its way to slapstick comedy (the darkly funny "Touring Jesusworld" followed by the Hope-Crosby homage "The Road to Recovery"), briefly dips its toes into the murky waters of the Thames (with a Jack the Ripper story called "From Hell Again"), and ends with a fable ("How Meersh the Bedeviler Lost His Toes"). Throughout, Frost shows a mastery of the short form that other writers can only envy and readers can't help but enjoy.
Reviewing the story information at the very beginning of this volume is instructive, if only because it demonstrates to those sampling his short work for the first time that Gregory Frost has been quietly penning funny, tragic, thoughtful, and vividly imagined short stories and novellas for a quarter of a century. Further research indicates that he's written several novels and some three-dozen short stories during that period. Noting that there are only fourteen examples of his work contained in Attack, you're left wanting more.
Looking at that information also proves that the decision an editor or author makes regarding story arrangement is crucial. For instance, it would have been easy to merely present the stories in chronological order. Doing it that way would have been interesting if only to chart Frost's development as a writer. The collection, however, seems purposely designed to let you laugh a bit before making you think or giving you a chill; that decision proved very wise, as it adds to the reader's overall enjoyment of these stories, proving that, at least in this case, the whole can be more than just the mere sum of its parts. Enhance the stories with wonderful cover and interior art by the talented Jason Van Hollander, and you get a package which is sure to garner some well-deserved attention from the fantasy, science fiction, and horror communities.
Frost does it all.......2005-12-22
Okay, I'm biased -- I've met him, and he's intelligent, funny, and socially engaged. This collection of stories has something for everyone: SF, fantasy, horror, comedy, and every possible combination of those elements. His wide range might not satisfy someone who wants a collection of stories restricted to only one universe, whether
Tolkein's or Frank Herbert's, but it insure that there's something for everyone, written in uniformly high quality. I'm going to read anything else he publishes.
A dazzling compilation that takes the reader on a dizzying journey through fractured time and space.......2005-09-05
Each of Nebula, Hugo, Tiptree, International Horror Guild, and World Fantasy Award finalist Gregory Frost's outstanding tales of fantasy is enhanced by the illustrations of Jason Van Hollander in Attack Of The Jazz Giants And Other Stories, a compendium of imaginative and entertaining short stories. Readers are treated to stories of an apocalyptic being that hides in a Ukrainian village; a horror that dwells in Jack the Ripper's pocket watch; a crossroads in which the Castle of Otranto connects with the Depression Era South, and more. Featuring a foreword by bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler and an afterword to each individual tale by award-winning author John Kessel, Attack Of The Jazz Giants And Other Stories is a dazzling compilation that takes the reader on a dizzying journey through fractured time and space.

A well documented history.......2007-01-10
This book was originally lent to me by a brother Knight as I contemplated joining the 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus. It is so well written and annotated, that I had to purchase one for myself. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Knights of Columbus or interested in knowing more about the history of this fine organization.
Most complete work on the subject.......2001-05-24
As a Knight, I have read many works on the subject, but this is the most succinct and complete. Though these two compliments may seem to be at odds with each other, I find that none of the salient points from other books have been omitted, making this the book of choice when time is at a premium.
