Book Description
I was marked from birth as belonging to the Goddess Epona--but that didn't make my life easy. Because of my "blessings," I was set apart, worshipped, unable to make real connections with others. Then came the Feeling, and with it a glimpse of my destiny. It led me to the MacCallen castle of legend, deserted since the terrible Fomorian war.
I followed the wordless call to breathe new life into a place long dead, but I didn't realize there were dark remnants of the war lingering in the nearby forest--victims and survivors who remained hidden. Others marked as different, powerful. Feared.
My choice was now twofold. I could keep to the happiness and safety of my newfound home, or I could choose a path that led to something more terrible, more dangerous, more thrilling than anything I'd ever expected.
And in that future I might never be alone again. . .

I love it!.......2005-10-14
I'm a big fan of the goddess series and this is my favorite since Goddess By Mistake.
Pagan Relaxation Reading.......2005-08-20
Elpahme's Choice by PC Cast is an enjoyable Pagan novel with its characters of a Priestess of Epona (Epona was actually a Pagan Godess of Ireland) Shaman centaurs, and a Princess whose two legs are those of a centaur but whose figure is essentially that of a human woman. Spells, blessings, etc. are done in true Pagan style with reference to the four elements. The protagonist, Elphane, the woman whose two legs are centaur legs, is seen by the humans as a Goddess and not as a human being with emotional needs. Thus Elphane must find a way in life where she not only has a purpose but can have a happy emotional life. So, she goes to restore a ruined castle to be Clan Chief there, but she must convince her followers to love and obey her as an approachable woman. So Elephame's Choice becomes a romance as well as a magical adventure...
The language is simple and untaxing, so this makes a nice easy, entertaining read.
Excellent Novel.......2005-08-17
I recently discovered P. C. Cast through Goddess of Spring. Over the course of nine days, I read Goddess of Spring, Goddess of Light, Goddess of the Sea, and Elphame's Choice (in that order). I could not put any of them down. I am eagerly anticipating Goddess by Mistake (yeah, I know I read them out of order). Her writing is amazing. The imagery is fantastic. I was sad to see the story come to an end, but I can't wait until Brighid's Quest comes out, and the story continues.
I honestly can not remember loving any author's work this much. I highly recommend all of her novels.
One of my favorite authors!.......2005-08-12
Not only does Ms. Cast have creative story settings, and interesting characters, but she nicely ties in (without losing a new reader) to her previous novel in the same world, "Goddess by Mistake". Now, it's not a perfect novel by any means, but I like a book that keeps me up wanting to read it, makes me laugh, makes me cry, and makes me feel thrilled where the romantic characters are involved!
If you like a paranormal romance with adventure thrown in, and characters that make you luagh and cry..then Ms. Cast definitely will fit the bill.
With the huge amount of paranormal romances out lately, most are either vampires or werewolves, so the characters in these novels are a refreshing change!
Good, but not as good as some of her others.......2005-05-03
I wished I'd read Goddess by Mistake when I read Elphame's choice. I enjoyed the novel, but it wasn't until I'd read Cast's first book that this one really made a lot more sense. The book stands alone just fine, but it's amplified by Goddess by Mistake.
Despite being a fantasy novel, this really fits in with Casts' other romance novels. Like them all, there's plenty of other things to keep you interested, a twisting plot, some action, a good dose of magic, all the things that make a romance novel so much more than heaving bosoms and tragic love, and mundane things.
Anyone who's ever been an outcast can sympathize with Elphame. Born half-human, half-centaur, she's obviously touched by the goddess Epona, and revered by the people of her lands. But being touched by a goddess and revered does not equate out to acceptance or friendship, and that's what she desires. Undertaking the restoration of McCallen Castle, her ancestral home, is how Elphame hopes to find her place in the world.
The supporting cast is an interesting lot, there's Lochlan, a half demon soul mate for Elphame, her strong willed brother Cuchulainn, who has Feelings about what going to happen, and the scarred Healer Brenna, who plays a bigger part in the novel then you'd originally think.
The only part of the book I disliked was Elphame's Feeling about her brother's relationship. I find Cast often uses tragedy to cause diversions in her book, and this is no exception. I really dislike killing off characters, and she killed one I really liked.
If you like PC Cast's boos, or like fantasy romance novels, this is a good choice to read. If you prefer your romance non paranormal, or your fantasy non romantic, then skip this one. I preferred Goddess of The Sea to this, but this is an enjoyable read.

Excellent...if you like Lindsey's writing style, this is for you........2007-03-18
Some of Lindsey's recent novels are real bombs. This is a good ole Lindsey classic, however. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy.
One of the best Johanna Lindsey novels.......2006-12-04
"Defy" rates at the top 5 JL novels along with the notable "Tender Rebel." This book is absolutely hilarious! I love Reina's spunkiness and Ranulf's willingness in learning how to please (or pleasure) his wife. I read this book over 13yrs ago and periodically read it over. I hate authors that's heavy on scenery, food, and wardrobe descriptions along with minimal communication between the main characters. You won't find that in this novel. It's a great read with memorable moments.
I Just Couldn't Get into It.......2006-01-03
I am a huge JL fan, and I have to say that this one is not nearly as good as her other books. I found the girl, Reina, to be annoying and the guy, Ranulf, to be a stupid brute.
The sudden change in feelings toward each other was also very bizarre. They would be yelling at each other, he would threaten to beat her backside, and then they'd have sex that Reina didn't enjoy. Then, to add a conflict I guess, Ranulf visits the village whore for advice.
I just felt that this book didn't have any of Lindsey's usual delightful humor that grabs my attention. And, I found the battle scenes more enjoyable than the love scenes, which isn't exactly romance.
Defy Not The Heart.......2005-05-27
This book was my second Johanna Lindsey I have read. I liked this book but I didn't (love) this book.Meaning I can easily put this book down not wanting to read chapter per chapter withen the hours of the day. Withen this time period Johanna really takes her time explaining this era in full detail. I had to constantly force myself to read through the first 200 pages. For this time era if you like full detail backround this book is for you. I personally like it when the author concentrates more about the couple rather than the backround..
Reina was very much likable she was such a fiesty little woman with a lot of spunk. Ranulf was really easy on the eyes which Johanna really explained with good detail, but to me he seems kinda blah. The man never shows expression but he shows a bit of arrogance (which is what I like about him). These two seem good I just wished I would've read more about them rather than the backround and the other characters, those parts of the book I just really yawned......
Refreshing, Amazing Romance Set in Medieval Times.......2004-07-28
"Defy Not the Heart" is one of Johanna Lindsey's BEST novels. I cannot even begin to say how great it was, starting at page one. This book was fast-paced, witty, well written, and had some unbelievably unforgettable characters.
Set in medieval times, "Defy" is a story about the mercenary knight Ranulf, who kidnaps Lady Reina to force her to wed a greedy lord, only to be convinced by Reina to marry her himself.
Reina is an awesome heroine. Nicknamed the "Little General" by her new husband, she has a sharp wit, fiery temper, and a penchant for calling her loved ones "lackwits." She even goes to war against a cat.
Ranulf is her gorgeous equal -- part grouch, part giant, with a sad past and the body of a god. I love the fact that he spends most of the book trying to figure out how to pleasure his wife in bed, an area where he was most disappointing at first.
This book is unique among Lindsey's work. She is careful with the narration, using a "medieval" writing style. There are some serious laugh-aloud scenes in this book, mostly because of the cat and Reina's gay chambermaid. And, the story revolves around the two characters getting to know each other after having been thrust into a quite-unexpected marriage (rather than revolving around a bad guy or some other distracting plot line). Altogether, it's a refreshing change!
I heartily recommend this book. It is Johanna Lindsey at her best! Though, please note, it does have a sequel in the recently published "Joining," which is like a deflated balloon compared to the amazing zeppelin of a romance that is "Defy Not the Heart."

another great story.......2006-07-03
I just got done reading this author's second book, Defy Not the Heart, I've read both of her works now and I love them! Both stories are very original in the character development and story line. It has lots of action, romance, and intrigue. I can't wait for more stories from this author and plan on buying each and everyone. Well worth the money for the entertainment.
The best book ever!.......2006-04-30
If you like action, romance, comedy, and anime, boy will u love this book! It has everything in more and the best part is there is more to come! A definite must-read!
a true review of the book by a purchaser.......2006-04-29
I will begin by saying that I have personally laid out the money not only for this book 'Defy Not The Heart' but, also the author's first book 'The Heart of Time'. I am not someone who has just read this author's description of the story or someone who has by chance read this authors "fan fiction" work and is now making an assumption basic off of that. I am a customer who paid for these books, I found both books to be entertaining and original. As far as the previous negitive reviews I believe everyone is entitled to their own thoughts but, when someone has no actually knowledge can their oppinion be worth listening to? These so called reviewers did NOT read THIS book, the real agenda as to why they wrote a review when they haven't read this book is unknown, it is up to the individuals reading these reviews to decide for themselves if to listen to ANY of the reviews when making your decision on if to buy this book or not but, being I have a copy of both stories I feel I can give a geniune review. This book is the second in a series that deals with diminsional differences along the same sequence of events, the stories are based around the same characters and same base story line everytime but, what occurs changes with each story. 'Defy Not The Heart' is the second book in the series it is a romance; it deals with one of the main male characters agony over silent love, lies, and his torment when he falsely believes he has done something to hurt the heroin he not only loves but, is sworn to protect with his life. Not only is he dealing with these issues he is also facing his feelings of betraying his own brother over this woman. This story is also a fantasy; dealing with beings with amazing powers, the time old fight of good verses evil, the idea of different dimensions; sliding acrossed them, how it would effect one's life and exploring how things could turn out differently with each book. The story is a novel for adults dealing with adult situations not a story like the Japanese anime/manga by Rumiko Takahashi geared for teens 14-yrs old and up. If you would compare the work of Rumiko Takahashi to this story by Amy Blankenship you would see they are not idential, while I'm sure you could find some similarities the same can be said when comparing any two stories in the same category, I could also point to other shows, movies, and books that deal with similar ideas but, they wouldn't be identical to 'Defy Not The Heart' and neither is what the negitive reviews are pointing too. I enjoy reading this authors work, she is a new and up coming author who has a very interesting series idea. If you are into reading fantasy stories with adult situations and romance then I would humbly suggest you give this author's work consideration.
Couldn't put it down.......2006-04-28
I just closed the back cover of 'Defy Not the Heart' and am very glad I purchased the book. You have a mixture of romance, action, humor and all around fantasy. The book was very difficult to put down. It was very reminiscent of a good Johanna Lindsey or Jude Deveroux book with just enough fantasy in there to make it even better.
I have also read the other reviews on this page, and to be honest...I see no connection with the anime created by Rumiko Takahashi. This book was not and could not have been plagerized due to the fact that Mrs. Takahashi did not write it. I see no signs of plagerism nor did I see anything about this book that would label it as a 'cheap romance novel'. Of course, one persons junk is another persons treasure and this book is a definite treasure.

Reina's cerulean eyes blazed with scorn as they fell upon the golden knight, Ranulf. This was her kidnapper; who was pledged to deliver her into the worst kind of bondage - marriage to the craven Lord Rothwell. To save herself from the union being forced upon her, she offered Ranulf a bargain: become my husband yourself. In exchange for your protection, I will make you a great lord. The nuptial bed was not part of the bargain. And Ranulf soon made it clear that he would accept no marriage of convenience. Johanna Lindsey's 18th historical romance weaves a glorious tale of danger and desire. Defy Not the Heart is destined to prove once again - everyone loves a Lindsey!

Book Description
Dr. Cherijo Torin crash-lands on an ice planet whose population is on the verge of civil war. With no knowledge of her past-or even her identity-she becomes entangled in the encroaching conflict, unaware that her husband is moving heaven and earth to find her.
Customer Reviews:
Another fascinating, but unfortunate read.......2006-09-03
For those hungry to read more of the exploits of Cherijo, well, you'll be sadly disappointed. The novel focuses more on Reever's desperate search for his wife, and entanglement with the politics on the planet, and even more on Tuelon, the last of the Hado clan, as he seeks vengeance on whomever he can get his hands upon. The underlying story is the identity of the woman with no memory and her search for survival.
"Well-drawn cultures and fascinating aliens are marred by busy point-of-view shifts and a trick ending that confuses more than illuminates." This is too true. Without giving spoilers, I felt quite disappointed in the end--I felt completely unnecessary. And I'll feel sorry for Cherijo in upcoming novels, because, no matter what, she'll still be hunted.
Overall, a poor ending. The twist was confusing to the point of nonsensical.
I'm really surprised by the other reviews........2006-05-14
I read the reviews before reading the book so I was a little apprehensive about picking it up. I love the Stardoc series and this book is no exception. It's different from the other books, which I think freshens up the series. All the other books have been from Cherijo's point-of-view. This one is not. I love Cherijo, but after so many novels it started to get a little same-old/same-old-kinda thing. Rebel Ice broke the Stardoc mold. The plot wasn't especially intricate but it still draws you in and there's an interesting little twist in the end. I love Reever and sometimes I have disliked him, but with this story you get a better look into the person that Reever is. This was something that was missing in the other stories. I think Rebel Ice doesn't receive the credit that it deserves. I will definitely pick up the next installation in this series.
So, So Sad.......2006-04-04
I started reading Viehl's Stardoc series right when it came out, and waited patiently for new additions and loved each until this one.
Viehl really took a disappointing turn with this installment. I was looking forward to Cherijo and Duncan, and to finding out about the special talents of their daughter, Marel.
I got Rebel Ice as soon as it was released, started reading it, got a 1/3 of the way in and wondered if I'd picked up the wrong book. Set it down, came back to it. Skipped around, finally read the final 1/3 just to see what would happen and if Cherijo was in it at all. SPOILERS AHEAD
For all intents and purposes, Cherijo is dead. The witty, quirky, irritable doctor who I'd really come to enjoy is gone completely. And since Cherijo's "father" is dead, I can't see a way for Cherijo to be resurrected. They'd have to encounter another ominipotent alien like Maggie, and I just don't see that happening.
If Viehl wanted to comment on issues in the Middle East, and our war practices, why didn't she write something nonfiction? Why ruin a perfectly good character this way?
Disappointing........2006-03-23
Dr. Cherijo Torin's ship crashes on an ice covered planet named Akkabarr. The royal and the rich live in suborbital cities, far above the icy climate, and untouchable. They grant food and other necessities to those on the planet as long as they obey. When Cherijo crashed, she sustained a major head injury. But we all know how hard it is for Cherijo to die. With the help of another rare healer, she survives, but has no memory of her past. Her husband, Duncan Reever, locates her after two long years. He vows to bring his wife home or die trying. Yet this must be done quietly because Akkabarr's surface people are in the midst of a rebellion against their masters above.
*** I am disappointed in this episode. There is not much real action going on. As for those medical emergencies that always seemed to entice those of us who work in the medical field, there are simply not enough. No gadgets that us wish really existed to help save lives. No strange alien beings with odd appendages to tantalize our imaginations. However, there are some fantastic and wild cats on the surface that seem to choose one or two humanoids to adopt, Cherijo being one of them. The book is worth your time to read, but far from the best in the StarDoc series. ***

What happened?.......2006-03-23
I picked up the first Stardoc book at Barnes and Noble the other day, and I've been hooked ever since. But now the main character who held everything together, the person whose quirky acts and thoughts and words amused and entertained me so much, is gone. The body is there, but not the memories, and while I appreciated Duncan's devotion despite that, I'm really disappointed. Before, he and Cherijo had finally worked out how their marriage should work, and I really wanted to see them truly working together. I'm sorry, but the whole "Now I'm Jarn, I don't remember and don't care about you" thing really turned me off. I'm not sure if what made this book so disappointing was having the really good previous series, but I sure hope that Viehl has somewhere that this is supposed to be going, and not just a grasping way to extend the storyline.

From renowned writer and poet Oriah Mountain Dreamer, author of the bestselling The Invitation, The Dance and The Call, comes a practical and inspiring book that explores creativity as a way of accessing and cultivating a spiritually rich life.
'The creative process,' Oriah Mountain Dreamer says, 'is essential to human nature.' It is as essential as spirituality and sexuality, and in fact all three are deeply intertwined. What We Ache For (taken from the second line of the poem, The Invitation) is a practical book allowing readers to embrace the urgency and necessity of their creativity – whether their medium is painting, sculpture, dance, or music. Oriah's passion is writing, and it is that talent which informs the book and its exercises – but the exercises provide readers with a new way to approach their own passions. Following Oriah through this journey, readers learn how to fully embrace their artistic selves as well as forging a new spiritual path. What We Ache For is the practical thread that ties together all of Oriah's previous work – and allows the reader to fully participate in an inspiring and revelatory way.

Customer Reviews:
Muse.......2006-07-18
One of the problems for an artist who wants to develop his or her creativity is knowing what creativity is. Some hope to lure a bolt from the blue that will change their view of the world. What they are probably looking for is inspiration.
Most of the books on creativity don't even notice the difference between creativity and inspiration. Add to that that many of the creativity books seem to believe that artists are not creative because of psychological hang-ups and you begin to see the problems an artist may have in working on creativity.
Oriah Mountain Dreamer is a writer who also has spent time as a facilitator and workshop instructor. I was a little reluctant to read this book because the title sounded so mystical. Well, the book is a bit mystical because the author believes in the strong connections between our sexuality, spirituality and creativity. But, surprisingly to me, the book is filled with practical information to help artists explore their creativity.
To the author creativity is finding the way to look at what we know from a new direction or without our preconceived notions. Or to quote a wonderful expression that overuse has turned trite, "thinking outside the box." It means trying to expand the way we see the world, by exploring our experiences at a deeper level, or even more playfully. For example she describes seeing a sign saying "Angels Flight Railway" and wondering where angels would flee and what they would be fleeing from. The author doesn't give us a key to a door in our mind but suggests that we may be able to find a lever.
The book is full of good practical advice, like telling the artist to find a special place to do his or her work, or learning to put aside time that is unscheduled. Some of these elements seem obvious but for me it was useful to hear her suggestions.
Each chapter includes exercises to do. The reader may shy away from them, but they are worth trying. Thinking about which year of your life you would wipe out and why and what the effects would be can provide you with an insight into yourself that can help you shape your art.
This is not a great book, but it is full of useful, practical advice. The artist in search of improved creativity will benefit from reading it.
Great Concept and Exercises, but Difficult to "Translate".......2006-01-14
As someone who is lucky enough to make my creative work my life's work, I was very interested to see what this book had to say. The concept of being true to one's creative process is important to me and I liked the idea of this book, but the execution was somewhat lacking. The narrative was interesting, but often I had a hard time connecting with her experiences and translating them to my life. The exercises at the end of each chapter, however, were very useful and thought-provoking. A good book to help restart or rejuvenate anyone's creative process, and an interesting way to look at what creativity means in a person's life.
Searching to improve creativity.......2005-04-07
In her latest book, the author of "The Invitation" encourages readers - no matter their form of creativity - to look deep into themselves to do what they ache to really accomplish. She proposes by searching our soul, our creativity improves, freeing us.
Each chapter shows the reader how Oriah came to these things herself. At the end there are three types of exercises. There is thinking, how, and doing. Some of these I have seen in other books on writing, but the author acknowledges each of us has our own path to unfolding our souls. By doing so, we are able to delve deep within, create, and share.
I really would have loved to give this book the top rating, but I couldn't. To be honest, I felt the author spent too much time discussing her own journey into searching for what she aches for rather than concentrating on helping the reader discover their own way. As a reader if you are wanting a spiritual book on how creative work unfolds the soul - as the title implies - you may wish to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you are looking for ways to think and work on your creativity to accomplish goals, this might be the book for you and I recommend it highly.
A Pleasant Ache.......2005-04-06
In this book, Oriah Mountain Dreamer lovingly encourages us to follow our creative yearnings. She shares strategies that help her creative life. Also she gives food for thought as well as concrete exercises. The advice she offers us is provocative and challenging.
