Book Description
A unique and ingeniously designed publication, MURMUR consists of five individually bound and handmade volumes (Blizzard of White, Superboo, Monster, Orbus, and Watery Ecstatic), held together by hidden magnets. Four volumes present film stills created in collaboration with Dutch artist Edgar Cleijne. They combine Gallagher's oceanic imagery with reworked and scratched footage from vintage science-fiction films. Orbus is a collection of Gallagher's watercolor, ink, and plasticine collages on paper. She gives new meaning to signs and images from advertising and mass media by modifying them with plasticine, oil, paint, ink, toy eyeballs, and crystals.
Ellen Gallagher is famous for her serene and imagi-native approach to African American identity. Her fluid images of strange sea creatures take us to Drexciya, a utopian underwater world inhabited by women and children who escaped from slave ships on the horrifying journey from Africa to America.
In these drawings Gallagher synthesises a new natural history from the infinitely strange morphologies of the known marine world as refracted through the prisms of fantasy and science fiction.- Caoimhín Mac Giolla LéithEllen Gallagher was born in 1965 in Providence, Rhode Island. She lives and works in New York and Rotterdam. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants and has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally.

Customer Reviews:
Not enthusiastic.......2005-02-13
I bought and then returned this book. From the description I expected a guide with detail about the different schools and programs, as well as inside information on the schools. Instead, the book contains a couple pages about audition procedures (a much better description is in the Performing Arts Major's College Guide) accompanied by basic information that is easily available off of the school websites (location, number of students plus number of students majoring in the discipline, teacher/student ratios, etc.). It was impossible to tell which programs had a good reputation or better quality. Save your money, and get the information off of the school websites.
Book Description
Making the connection between writing and visual art can activate what William Burroughs called "The Third Mind"from the confluence of the two art forms, something new, or other, emerges. This new anthology of essays about the challenges and rewards of uniting art and writing not only demonstrates how visual art can spark wonderful student writing, but goes much further, offering novel insights into the creative process. The result, editors Foster and Prevallet demonstrate, produces a new spirit of collaboration, one which in turn opens up dramatic possibilities for teachers, students, and the classroom dynamic.
The 20 essays in Third Mindby teachers, poets, writers, artists, and museum educators from across the countryoffer ideas on a diverse array of artistic disciplines, among them, quilt-making, Chinese calligraphy, abstract painting, and photographic portraiture. Third Mind also features 20 pages of gorgeous color plates, as well as an inspiring bibliography of works on visual art and creative writing.

Must Have For College Bound Performing Atrists.......2000-05-17
This book was very helpful in my quest in finding a quality arts school where I could get a degree in my field. Finding schools for the arts is a very difficult task and this book took away all of the guess work, thus letting me find aschool instead of picking the same old art school everyone knows. Instead I found a school that was right fir me and my art.

Dark > Scary > Violent > Adventurous > Cool > Funny >Dorky.......2007-03-08
THis is one of the thickest of the SW tales TPBs. As you can see, there's alot to this issue. It's probably not the one that you want to read to your kids before bed time, though. I wouldn't even want a teenager read #2 or #6. The first part is much too dark and evil for my liking but other comedy, Fett mania, and thought-provoking stories in the book made up for it. I knew Jar Jar would come in handy someday. Here's a brief Synopsis of each tale: (I really liked *)
1. Han Solo do-gooder story with zombies.
2. Teen Sith Wanabees.
3. Cover character's one appearance.
4. Chewie do-gooder story with phantoms.
5. The reason there's only two siths at a time.
6. Wicked, Twisted, Freaky Jedi chick.
7. Boba Fett is #1.*
8. Boba Fett Rules.*
9. Boba Fett has a heart.
10. Boba Fett has a cool dad.
11. Boba Fett won't die.*
12. Arachnid Artoo Mech-wierdness vs. Luke.
13. Space farers leave Gibbela alone.
14. A forgotten Clone Wars tale.
15. The Breakfast Club on the Death Star.*
16. Where Luke's first Lightsaber landed.*
17. Bigfoot story with a Harrison Ford cameo.*
18. C3P0 inspires a revolution in the devolved future.*
19. Jar Jar is an idiot.
20. Luke I'm your father practice.*
21. Jawas rip off the Oakies.
22. Young Luke solves a murder.
23. What became of the Wampa's severed arm.
24. Jar Jar is an idiot, still.*
25. Anakin and Padme work out the wedding details.
26. There's no place for Ewoks in the new republic.
27. Boba Fett's cousin demonstrates why no one has ever heard of him.*
28. Lando impersonates a Jedi.

--- A whole bunch of corny gag shorts by the editors.
Quality and Quantity.......2007-01-10
The thing that most suprised me about this comic book was how many stories were in it! I was used to buying a $12-$13 book and getting only one story line. Then, I bought this one and was very pleasantly suprised at how long it took me to read it. Though these stories are non-canonical they are still very amusing. Because they are not integrated so tightly in the storyline of the Star Wars universe there are also more instaces of humor. Some of my favorites include The Apprentice, a story about a sith apprentice with an unexpected turn, Storyteller, an example of the power of inspirational stories, and finally the long titled: The Value of Proper Intelligence to any Sucessful Military Campaign is not to be Underestimated, a short, comical story about a victory against the Empire. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Star Wars comic books but is ready for something more comical and substancial.
I enjoyed this... and I'm not really into EU stuff.......2006-04-23
Got this from the bookstore the other day because Fred Jawa told me to buy it, and immediately started reading it. This book has lots of comedy stories, lots of action stories, and several thought-provoking stories. Don't be discouraged if you have trouble keeping up with all the Star Wars Expanded Universe stuff, because most of this book is "infinities" (stuff that never happened... or just might have) Included in this collection was the all Boba Fett issue, so Boba fans should check this out. (It made ME a Boba fan) Personal favs: Melvin Fett (Boba's bumbling cousin), All For You, the Storyteller, and Being Boba Fett.
A note: this book is in the "over 12" category. There is plenty of blood and scary things, and a few swear words.
Another fantastic fantasy........2006-03-15
Star wars is a beloved universe that has many fans. Any fan that wants to get an interesting take on characters and their links to various stories within the starwars time frame should read the Star Wars Tales, including Vol. 5. I own all of the series and have enjoyed reading the alternate take on characters and their back stories. Darth Maul is even resurected in ghost form to battle the Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker in a short encounter. If you are a Star Wars fan, you will enjoy this series and if you are a fan of the Expanded Universe, you will love them even more.
Book Description

Now this important effort has been collected and presented for instruction to the ages.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reading if You Like Laughing Out Loud.......2007-06-09
I love humor and this book had me in stitches. "Lazlo Toth" is a riot. Do yourself a favor and have this sitting around the house for when you want a laugh.
My Kind of Crazy.......2006-02-17
As a fan of Don Novello's earlier works, I was concerned that perhaps, this book wasn't going to be as funny as the older books. But, I'm happy to report that Don Novello is as "bent" as he ever was! Over the years, these books have inspired me to write a few memorable letters of my own and I think I might start writing them again. These books are best when read aloud and shared with friends. You'll laugh til you cry!
Lazlo Toth for Poet Laureate.......2004-01-21
Lazlo Toth is back with more of his hilarious letters. This is his third book of letters to corporations, politicians, religious leaders and anyone else he feels like writing to. Lazlo is a funny as ever, but the responses he receives aren't as funny as in his other books. Most of the time, he just receives a form letter, if they bother to write back at all. Still, a very funny book, if you share Don Novello's absurd sense of humor.
Give the gift of laughter by giving someone this book!.......2003-12-10
I had the pleasure of meeting Don Novello at a book signing. He is such a sincere and intelligent person-- one of America's best wits.
Sadly, he said that this is his last "Lazlo Toth" book.
I almost described this book here as being "remorselessly" funny. But that would be incorrect. Don Novello's humor lacks any nuance of cruelty-- his is a quirky, kind humor. Biting, yes! But humane.
An abbreviated example:
England's Queen Mother, he notes in one letter, may be burdened by titles supreme and inconsequential-- but probably will never be bestowed the title of "designated driver".
From Bush To Bush: The Lazlo Tooth Letters.......2003-10-22
HILARIOUS AND EDUCATIONAL!
In reading Don Novello's wonderful and funny book "Bush to Bush" "The Lazlo Tooth Letters" I couldn't stop laughing. But on a serious note, I would like to know if it's true that there's a venomous poison Lurking Monk fish,or the Lurking Monk Fish of Mazatlan. Like a chameleon it has the ability to change colors, and it's biggest trick is turning blue and disguising itself as water. it may be true ... but since Lazlo Tooth wrote it I doubted it, therefore,I have written to an authority on "Dangerous Marine Animals of the world" I am waiting for a reply. I have read all Don Novello's books and look forward to him writing many more in the future. It is enjoyable disgussing his books with my friends who enjoy his books as well. I suggest his books make great gifts for any occasion for young and old alike
