Book Description

Complete Book of Throws presents techniques and conditioning programs used by many of the best athletes in the shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw. Strength development, effective energy transfer, and detailed training schedules will help throwers get in peak condition and apply their power fully on each attempt.

Shot put: Master the glide and spin techniques with drills that break down the throwing sequence into individual movements, and then put it back together to establish proper motor patterns.

Discus: Develop a fluid and efficient throw. Find a rhythm, learn the fundamentals and techniques, and practice rhythm drills to accelerate maximally through the throw while maintaining precise control.

Javelin: Perform the technique drills and power training exercises to develop and apply speed, power, and rhythm to the throw, which in turn will help you achieve optimum speed, angle, and height on every delivery.

Hammer: Establish a grip, swing, and wind for a good throwing rhythm and tempo. Then use the drills to develop speed and control to release the hammer at the height of acceleration.

Whether you're preparing for high-level competition or just learning the event, Complete Book of Throws provides technique drills, conditioning exercises, and sample training programs for building the body, improving form, and perfecting each throw.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2006-05-05

I myself am a novice thrower who purchased this book in order to gain a better understanding of the javelin throw in particular and I am pleased to say that I wasn't let down. The book does a great job of offering some specific workout plans and training drills that can help increase your power output and thus enable you to throw farther.
The only reason I gave this book a four star rating was because of the technique instructions that were explained only in print with few pictures.
Overall a very good book however and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get in better shape for the throwing events or to a coach who wants to better condition their athletes.

4 out of 5 stars Nice work.......2005-09-08

I consider myself to have a decent undersanding of the throws, and still found this book to be full of tidbits of knowledge. If you are a throws guy (or girl) then this book should be a part of your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Quilting.......2007-05-12

Book is smaller than original one and the print is very small. Other than that, the book has a lot of great ideas.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed..........2005-04-30

I was hoping to find a quilting book with good projects for a beginner quilter. The projects are cute and appear to be easy. After attempting a couple of projects, I realized that there are holes in the directions, and assumptions that the person doing the project will "just know" what to do to fill in the gaps. The pictures aren't actually a guide, as you can't tell what's being done in them. I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a book that is actually good for a beginner!

5 out of 5 stars Truly an awesome quilting book!.......2003-04-24

I was looking for a good all-around book on quilting, that had basic tips and guidelines as well as a variety of projects. This book most definitely fits the bill!

It contains detailed sections on historical background, fabrics, techniques, tips, and has lots of full-color photographs that are very clear and easy to follow (not to mention gorgeously done).

The projects included are beautiful and unique, not your regular log cabin/flying geese quilt block fare. There are a number of different quilting styles explored that create some truly stunning items: clothing, home decorating, accessories, toys, linens, and more.

Many of the fun items are perfect for gift-giving (if you can bear to give them away and not keep them for yourself!). The book delves into the use of lots of other fabrics for quilting from silks to batiks, even PVC, so it's not just your granny's 100% cotton calicos any more!

I guarantee that just flipping through the book you'll find at least five projects that you'll want to get started with.

Best of all, it approaches all the projects with a very simple yet casual attitude, demystifying what appear to be impossible techniques and fabric usage, making "advanced" quilting accessible to crafters of all skill levels.

The book itself is not all that large, it's a smaller format overall and the pages are very sturdy and thick high-quality paper. However, despite its size, the sheer amount of information packed within it is truly enough to get anyone started or keep anyone interested. I like the size as it's easy to take with me and it fits well in the hand.

I own a lot of quilting books, some of them the size of a coffee-table book, and I have to say that this book is the one I constantly go back to, to look up information, get quick instructions on "how do I do this again?", find a project for a rainy day (or weekend, or week), or sometimes just to page through and wish I had an unlimited fabric budget.

If you get this book you will not be disappointed!

Book Description

From the bestselling author of the Heralds of Valdemar series comes an enchanting novel.

In the land of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, if you can't carry out your legendary role, life is no fairy tale. . .

Elena Klovis was supposedto be her kingdom's Cinderella--until fate left her with a completely inappropriate prince! So she set out to make a new life for herself. But breaking with "The Tradition" was no easy matter--until she got a little help from her own fairy godmother. Who promptly offered Elena a most unexpected job. . .

Now, instead of sleeping in the chimney. She has to deal with arrogant, stuffed-shirt princes who keep trying to rise above their place in the tale. And there's one in particular who needs to be dealt with. . .

Sometimes a fairy godmother's work is never done. . . .

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars another splendid retelling, but..........2007-09-15

Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors and does a magnificently creative job of reinventing traditional (no pun intended) fairy tales and legends. This book, like her Elemental Masters series, is no exception. The Cinderella story gets an engaging twist when Elena becomes the new Fairy Godmother. My only complaint is that Ms. Lackey seems to be following the recent trend of throwing (in my opinion) gratuitous sex into a story. Did the dream sequences with Elena and Alexander, not to mention the actual face-to-face love scene, HAVE to give us a play-by-play of eroticism? She has written satisfying love/sex scenes before (for example, in the Heralds series) without going into minute detail about who was doing what and how. If it were not for these passages in this book, I would give this one the full five stars and recommend it to several young teenage girls I know. Unfortunately, the sex makes it inappropriate for the early-teen group, when otherwise it would be a delightful story for them to read.

3 out of 5 stars fairy tales with a twist.......2007-08-06

This one got such rave reviews I just had to see what all the hipe was about. Sorry but I was not as entralled as most of the reviewers. I know this was suppose to be the first parnormal romance from LUNA, but the romance didn't happened until the last 100 pages. Most of this book was the daily life of how to become a fairy godmother and what The Tradition was all about. This was great information for futher reading in this series, but I just don't feel like it was necessary. I know Lackey was trying to be witty, and some pieces were, but not enough to hold my attention in the beginning. The end, was great. The by play between the prince and the brownies and Elena was funny and made the book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, again!.......2007-02-20

Mercedes Lackey has done it again. She has created a viable world with beautifully realistic characters. Give us more.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2007-02-09

If you like old fairy tales with a new more grown-up twist, this book & series is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Enjoyable.......2007-01-05

I've read so many books now that I've gotten very picky. Most books I find I'm skimming a lot of it--not this one. Very interesting story that I couldn't predict, a great escape with no jarring out of my suspension of disbelief, and the ugly side that you also find in reality was not too heavily detailed.

In this world, there is a force called Tradition that moves events into the path most resembling a Fairy Tale. However, sometimes the circumstances just won't allow the Fairy Tale to have a happy ending, as in this story--Cinderella's prince is just a little boy, so she languishes unrescued instead of living happily ever after.

Now in this world, the person who is the focus of the fairy tale feels the force of magic gathering around them more and more as they go further down the road of unresolved Fairy Tale Completion--the longer it goes on without resolution, the more the magic builds. Most often, either an evil sorcerer comes and takes their magic, resulting in the death of the unfortunate focus of the fairy tale, or a good wizard comes and takes it in a kindly fashion, and they settle for something less.

This Cinderella thinks about settling for less, but doesn't do it...and that makes all the difference.

If you like fantasy, this is worth a try for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining Read.......2007-03-31

I have read several of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books and while I don't think that this one was quite as good as those, I did find it very entertaining. It kind of reminded me of a romance novel set in a fantasy world. The story is unique and interesting and I thought that the character development was very good. It's not my new favorite but it's definitely worth a read if you like this kind of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy Godmothers in a new light.......2007-02-16

If you have ever wondered where Fairy Godmothers came from, or whether or not they had private lives, if you've ever wondered what capricious energies are set in motion when Tradition is flouted as Fairy Tales go wrong, you will enjoy this charming, inventive, and enjoyable tale. Mercedes Lackey hits her stride as a writer in these wacky fairy tales (Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series ) with gentle humor, good natured intelligence, and an engaging romantic subplot. As usual with Mercedes Lackey, there is a lot of thundering action between the good and bad guys, and it is clear her fairy tale universe has many, many more tales to unfold. The romance is a little more graphic than is usual with Mercedes, but less than in many current romance novels.

Larry Niven may be America's greatest living hard-SF writer. Much of his SF belongs to his famous future history, the Tales of Known Space. His preeminent creation is the Ringworld: an immense, artificial, ring-shaped planet that circles a Known Space star. Possibly SF's greatest feat of world-building, the Ringworld is featured in four novels: the Hugo and Nebula Award winner Ringworld (1970); The Ringworld Engineers (1980); The Ringworld Throne (1996); and Ringworld's Children (2004).

Ringworld's Children returns series protagonist Louis Wu to the titular world. Louis and his friend The Hindmost, an alien of the Pierson's puppeteer race, are prisoners of the Ghoul protector Tunesmith, a Ringworld native, who is deliberately provoking the warships that surround his world. All the star-faring races of Known Space have sent warships to the Ringworld, and they are already at the brink of war. If fighting breaks out, the near-indestructible Ringworld will be destroyed: dissolved by antimatter weapons.

The Ringworld series is so complex and ambitious that Ringworld's Children opens with a glossary and a cast of characters, inclusions that even many Known Space fans will need. Newcomers to Niven's artificial planet should start with Ringworld. --Cynthia Ward

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ringworld's Children.......2007-06-29

Comepletes the story began in Ringworld Throne, these two stories are not Niven's best work but are worth a "read." The stories move a little too slow for my tastes but there is multiple character development to enliven them.

2 out of 5 stars Only slightly better than Throne .......2007-02-25

Not quite the crapfest that was book 3 in the Ringworld series, but still a gigantic disappointment coming from Niven. Children is plagued by the same things that made the previous novel so unbearable: flat, uninteresting characters, ridiculous names, obsession over interspecies sex for no reason other than to include sex in the story, and overall a poorly written plot. To be fair, I didn't come out of this one as bewildered as after Ringworld Throne - don't even ask me to summarize THAT plot, I've yet to come across a decent one myself, mostly because trying to figure it out can cause lasting brain damage. But even so, this novel is nowhere near the original Ringworld novel, or even Engineers for that matter. Avoid if possible.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but definitely worth the journey..........2007-02-06

I didn't see the disjointedness that some other reviewers are claiming, I felt the book had a healthy, mostly linear pathway from beginning to end. I wouldn't place it with my favorite Niven books, but I definitely enjoyed it and felt the ending made a great finale to the Ringworld story (assuming that's what it is).

5 out of 5 stars Niven is great!.......2007-01-16

My husband has read this whole series, and he really loves all the books. Ringworld is an amazing setting, and the stories are awesome. This is one of his favorite series, and we both recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing to a longtime fan of the series........2006-08-25

Unfortunately this book reads like a sereis of incomplete notes for two or more books that was hastily joined up into one novel.

There are repeated jumps in time that are explained but are still so disorienting that they distract you from what is taking place as you read the book. Niven's usual detailed depiction of the alien or foreign is almost completely absent from this work, and the reader spends much of his or her time re-reading to try and figure out if they missed a page by accident.

The treatment of the primary personas in the book is almost offhandedly shabby.

Louis Wu, the longtime main hero of the series is swep along with the story rather than being the guide for the reader that he had been up until this book. He is constantly distracted by self doubt, lament over Teela Brown, and his desire to bone anyone he meets.

Chmee: Pretty much absent. His one appearance late in the book is exempt of flavor.

Hindmost: bleh. This one has been one-note since the first appearance. Typical Puppeteer "I'm scared! But I can be manipulated int doing scary stuff."

Chmee's son "Acolyte": starts out as an interesting persona in the first 1/3rd of the book, but becomes just a minor note lost in the confusion of the jumpled plotline.

Tunesmith (the Ghoul Protector): Banal. While he shows some potential to live up the the Brennan monster, the original sentient Protector from the novel "Protector", he ends up being not much more than a step ladder.

The new characters in this novel are:

Roxanny: An ARM agent, crashed on the surface of the ring. Dick-fodder for Wu, and other male characters. The dynamic between her and Wu has moments but they are never adequately explored.

Wembleth: A "native" of the ring. A plot-point involving this guy is one of the only interesting ones in the book, sadly it is explored and dropped in about two pages.

An actual Pak Protector: Who is so uninteresting that even though I finished the book last night I already forgot her name.

This book had so much potential, with the introduction of an original Pak I would have loved to learn more about them and the origins of the ring, but all of that is glossed over.

Fortunately the hardover was very cheap an I'm a Amazon Prime member so shipping was free.

Summary: Worth reading if you have read the previous three and can get it cheaply enough. Not a good intro to Niven, who is usually so much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Fields of the Fatherless is a Five.......2007-03-09

This book is a good read for anyone, especially those interested in or having adopted a child. It is directed at the professed believer who claims to want to honor and obey God. The author gives many scriptural examples of how the Father intended his children to behave in relation to those among us who are less fortunate and therefore needy. It touched my husband and me deeply as we are the parents of an adopted daughter who died four years ago. We have purchased several additional copies to give to others who for different reasons will be blessed by this excellent book.

"In this world you are an orphan; eagerly anticipating your adoption as God's child.
In this world you are a widow; longing for reunion with your Bridegroom.
In this world you are a stranger; a pilgrim waiting to become a citizen of heaven.
And in this world, God has called you to care for the orphan, the stranger, and the widow."

So starts Tom Davis' short, but powerful book on compassion to the orphan, the stranger, and the widow in Fields of the Fatherless.
I'd highly recommend this book to all followers of Jesus, regardless of your call to adopt. It's applicable to the entire body of Christ.

Ultilizing the metaphor of the Old Testament practice of leaving a portion of your field for the 'stranger, the fatherless, and the widow' (Deut. 24:19f), Davis offers a passionate plea for living a life of compassion to the less fortunate.

These less fortunate (strangers, widows, orphans) are mentioned over 60 times in Scripture! Yet we tend to have blinders on when reading our Bibles. Studies show that Christians give less than non Christians to AIDS related causes (the leprosy of our day).

But in ignoring the orphans, the widows, and the strangers, we are missing out on an incredible, joy that can only come with sacrifice. For in the eyes of the orphan, we catch a glimpse of God.

Davis writes: "To feed, clothe, and treat the fatherless as members of one's own family is to live out the call of Christ." (55) This book is a great advocacy tool in raising up the church to live out its call to the fatherless. I will be passing it out to my senior pastor, and our mission board to read and (I hope) inspire. We'd encourage you to do the same. It's a quick read, consisting of over 6 chapters, and refrains from using technical adoption jargon. Rather, it simply and passionate pleads the case for the downtrodden in our world.

"But whoever has this world's gods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?"--I John 3-16-17

5 out of 5 stars Jesus speaks through this book.........................2006-03-21

.......and you will hear Him, loud and clear. Beautifully written and easy to read. This book is not complex and meant for study. It is a quick read of 2 hrs or so. It is a book of receiving and giving. You will receive a fresh anointing, a new hope and in turn you will be called to give it away. To share the hope and joy of Christ with those who are fatherless in spirit and in body. Amazing read!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is absolutely fabulous! I read it in less than 24 hours. It will move you to ACT. It is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. I sent an email to the author through his website - just for feedback - and received a personal response! This guy is 'for real' and is committed to helping orphans. Check out the Children's Hopechest organization after you read this book.
