Book Description

"Bloomsbury on the Mediterranean," is how Vanessa Bell described France in a letter to her sister, Virginia Woolf. Remarking on the vivifying effect of Cassis, Woolf herself said, "I will take my mind out of its iron cage and let it swim.... Complete heaven, I think it." Yet until now there has never been a book that focused on the profound influence of France on the Bloomsbury group. In Bloomsbury and France: Art and Friends, Mary Ann Caws and Sarah Bird Wright reveal the crucial importance of the Bloomsbury group's frequent sojourns to France, the artists and writers they met there, and the liberating effect of the country itself. Drawing upon many previously unpublished letters, memoirs, and photographs, the book illuminates the artistic development of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Clive Bell, David Garnett, E. M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Dora Carrington, and others. The authors cover all aspects of the Bloomsbury experience in France, from the specific influence of French painting on the work of Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, and Vanessa Bell, to the heady atmosphere of the medieval Cistercian Abbaye de Pontigny, the celebrated meeting place of French intellectuals where Lytton Strachey, Julian Bell, and Charles Mauron mingled with writers and critics, to the relationships between the Bloomsbury group and Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Andre Gide, Jean Marchand, and many others. Caws and Wright argue that Bloomsbury would have been very different without France, that France was their anti-England, a culture in which their eccentricities and aesthetic experiments could flower. This remarkable study offers a rich new perspective on perhaps the most creative group of artists and friends in the 20th century.

      Book Description

Early textile dyers signed oaths that they would not reveal any of the process. Fortunately, author Carolyn Dahl openly shares the secrets of dyeing, painting, and patterning beautiful cloth she has gleaned in art schools. This guide is the next best thing to having a master artist in the studio.

Entertaining stories awaken memories of childhood coloring books, leaf prints, iron-on designs, and the tie-dyed T-shirts most of us experienced at some point in our lives. Readers will be inspired as they follow step-by-step photographs and instructions full of hints and secrets for using luminous color to transform white cloth into artistic masterpieces. Connoisseurs of the decorative arts and those who are merely curious about the fabrics they wear and use in everyday life will find much to interest them.

      * Produce successful results without an instructor * Author relates own experiences, telling why a technique is done, giving more control to the dyer * Contains lots of fresh ideas

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CLEAR and PRECISE.......2007-09-03

I think it is the clarity and precision with which the author presents her ideas. Very good resource material for my daughter. She uses it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30

I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.

      4 out of 5 stars Explains why.......2006-01-08

This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.

      4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2005-10-05

This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-09-22

I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

      Book Description

Now completely revised and updated, and expanded by more than fifty percent, The Complete Canvasworker's Guide, Second Edition, brings you Jim Grant's thorough step-by-step approach to constructing a nearly endless variety of attractive and functional gear for your boat. Grant, with his wife, Connie, has taught sailmaking and canvaswork for more than 20 years, and he brings an often intimidating craft within the grasp and budget of anyone from an all-thumbs beginner to a would-be professional.

Forget that canvas always used to be made of cotton. Today it is far more commonly woven of synthetic fibers: acrylic, polyester, or nylon. Here is all the information you'll need to make use of them all. Grant's no-frills approach, refined over years of answering the questions of puzzled students, is for any boatowner who wants to take needle to fabric. And as tens of thousands of proud boatowners will happily testify, it really works.

Here's what reviewers have said about The Complete Canvasworker's Guide:

Luscious colors, strong design, and a bold sense of playfulness pervade both Yvonne Porcella's creations and her enticing book. Information on supplies and a solid introduction to color principles lead to an exciting section on surface design that encourages readers to experiment with different types of resists, salt patterning, brush-stroke variations, sponging, rubber stamping, image transfers, beaded embellishments, and other approaches to putting color and pattern on fabric. Instructions with enlargeable patterns for 16 projects include quilts, vests, jackets, and celebration banners, in styles ranging from bright graphics to subtle marbled effects to designs resembling delicate watercolor paintings. Novices take note: although the basic painting directions are designed for all skill levels, the projects are advanced and the instructions not very thorough; they are clearly meant for experienced seamstresses. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars An Exercise in Color.......2001-08-18

If all you were in the market for was an excellent resource book covering fabric surface design, the investment in this book would be more than worth your while, but the bonus found in Yvonne Porcella's "Six Color World" lies in her fabulous quilt and wearable patterns. Leafing through the pages of this instructional art textile book, one will find some of the most creative fabric surface design ideas in print. This book is a celebration of color and image design, and Yvonne is not afraid to explore every possible permutation of the color wheel in her foray into textile surface design. Basic Color Theory and History, Surface Design Technique, Dyeing and Painting Principles, and Image Transfer are thoroughly covered in the first third of Yvonne's well-written and informative text, followed by a sampling of general surface embellishment techniques. The book wraps up with Home Decor, Quilts, and Wearables, along with some very creative Banner ideas. Not for the rank beginner, but for those who are looking to expand their talents and skills in textile and fabric design, as well as venture into the fiber art world, this book promises some stimulating and challenging projects for the experienced quilter and textile designer. Another fabulous book by Yvonne Porcella!

          Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported gum-coated textile fabrics for book covers, tracing cloth, prepared painting canvas, and buckram for hat foundations. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

while the other three books were just as good, there is certin stories in this one that i rather liked. there were alot more shorter stories to chosse from. over all rather good and fun to read, can't wait for the 4th to come out.

3 out of 5 stars Same as the last.......2007-05-05

I hate to say it but I found the weiner in the fence kind of funny. The stories are fair, sex for the sake of sex.

The art depends on the story. It goes from good to OH MY GOD, WTF!

                    Explicit, very.

3 out of 5 stars Inferior to earlier volumes.......2007-03-02

I was disappointed in this third volume of the series of Yaoi Hentai. I found the quality of drawing and stories to be inferior to the first two volumes overall.

There are five stories but no index or tabel of contents to tell you what they are, so here's a list:

"The Aristocrats" is about two performers trying to get a show accepted.

"The Morality League" is about a high school self-hating gay boy who uses violence to cover his desires.

"Oh No!" seems to be about two young lovers who get turned on by watching others through a hole in a fence.

"The Silver Bell" was the best drawn and frankly most interesting; a fantasy piece about fairies and the risks of having sex with them.

Finally another tentacle monster story, this time set on a subway in some odd future world where male nudity is mandatory.

                    5 out of 5 stars I love this series!.......2007-08-09

I think that there needs to be at least one series that goes all the way in yaoi, and this one does not disappoint! I love the unrepentant 'plot-what-plot' vibe. It's up front: You're going to get hot, uncensored yaoi.

I especially like the cute and funny bits. Like the little chibi breaking the forth wall in the violin story, and the 'ow my butt hurts' part in the rocker story. And of course, the Trach the Tentacle monster stories rule! Falcor getting hit by the train was a riot!

I think that when people know what they're in for with this series they can better appreciate it. The draw out sexual tension and drippy romance is already in every single yaoi out there. This one just gets to the goods. Anyone who was expecting more that raw loving is of course going to be disappointed, but then what did you expect for a series called 'Yaoi Hentai'? Hentai means Perv!

I eagerly await every new volume.

3 out of 5 stars Still not very good art.......2007-05-05

A couple of the stories were okay (not great) But the art is still pretty bad.

                    Explicit.

                    4 out of 5 stars yaoi banzai.......2007-02-07

this volume was steamy and fun. trachs short in the back was hilarious...LMFAO. if youlike yaoi and hentai, this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good smut...now if they could get GOOD artists..........2006-12-31

I'm just being nice for this review on Yaoi Hentai - probably cos it's the only good series Yaoi Press releases - I say that cos I've read a number of their Graphic Novels.
Yaoi Hentai is different though, it shows everything and focuses on sex, rape or whatever the writer wants.
The stories are a little lacking, the sex is the only thing they all have in common not that I mind seeing - as most Japanese Manga only show cones - but it's the drawing that throws you off. You kinda have to wonder if any of those artists have ever seen a naked man as they all look...strange and off putting. Some of the drawings are off proportioned making the smut scenes look horrible (either that or impossible).
At least we didn't see a return of Wicked from Yaoi Hentai Vol. 1. That art was just horrible!
Probably the most positive about YH2 is that Trach the tenactle monster adds some humor. But don't expect to laugh your head off, just chuckle if that.

3 out of 5 stars More Western than I imagined.......2006-07-25

More western in terms of the books layout and in terms of the focus on the sex over the plot or characters. I frankly didn't have a problem with the sexual focus but others might. There are five stories in this book but I think the best two are "The Stradivarious" and "Sex Idol" where the drawing, the plot, and the characters were more complexed. I'm happy I got it but if you are expecting to not see sex (why are you looking for yaoi then?) or you want very little sex and great masterpieces of art, this isn't for you. If you just like the idea and the image of beautiful young men together, this might be something for you.

This is yaoi at its most extreme: graphic scenes of loving between a college professor and his student, a bar-hopper & some thugs who kidnap him, members of a corrupt soccer team and a tentacle monster who's hot for a pair of twin bishounen. Nothing is left to the imagination! Mature and explicit content.

3 out of 5 stars Could be Erotic IF the art was fixed?.......2007-01-02

This is the first Graphic Novel (GN) in a series Yaoi Press plans to release (at least one or two Graphic Novels a year).
Yaoi Press is a self-erected American Graphic Novel company that employs people from all over the world to draw and write GN for the English speaking audience. The idea is wonderful, sharing Yaoi with all.
But this is where they fall short. As most fans of Manga (Japanese Comics) are used to the Japanese Art Style, expecting a clear shot of a huge fan base for Western 'styled' art is a little too much. As most of the Artists (except Studio Kosen, who doesn't draw for any Yaoi Hentai GN I've seen so far) seem to be untalented and seem to need drawing lessons of their own. I agree with the statement their artists draw like they are making a coloring book with the huge thick lines. You'll see better art in a Superman comic.
The proportions of the men and boys depicted in these GN's makes one wonder is the artists have ever seen a naked man before. Another is the fact, we come back to the feminine uke, where there are no muscles or anything revealing that they are truly men to begin with.
The stories are truly smut which is the only positive. But some of points of the stories still isn't revealed. No real plot just meet-and-screw. If the art wasn't so terrible, it would so much better!
Maybe when Yaoi Press hires some good artists they'll sell more books. The writers are fine, just that horrible art they need to fix. Maybe get Studio Kosen (Stallion, Satoishi the Guardian) to do a lot more of their titles?

1 out of 5 stars A Weak Offering of Original Yaoi.......2006-12-01

I'm glad that I read this one at a convention and didn't throw away my money on it. The stories aren't that great. I never was a fan of the type of forced relationships many of them portray. I find such stories to be stereotypical, terribly bland, and just plain unappealing.

Of course, the thing that got to me most was the story where the soccer player gets raped by the sumo wrestling team. Yes, you read that correctly. There is a non-con scene with sumo wrestlers. I think it's hard to fall much lower than that.

What makes ice cubes cloudy? How do shark attacks make airplanes safer? Can a person traveling in a car at the speed of sound still hear the radio? Moreover, would they want to...?

Do you often find yourself pondering life's little conundrums? Have you ever wondered why the ocean is blue? Or why birds don't get electrocuted when perching on high-voltage power lines? Robert L. Wolke, professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh and acclaimed author of What Einstein Didn't Know, understands the need to...well, understand. Now he provides more amusing explanations of such everyday phenomena as gravity (If you're in a falling elevator, will jumping at the last instant save your life?) and acoustics (Why does a whip make such a loud cracking noise?), along with amazing facts, belly-up-to-the-bar bets, and mind-blowing reality bites all with his trademark wit and wisdom.

If you shoot a bullet into the air, can it kill somebody when it comes down?

This book was written in a way that's easy to read in short bursts. No one topic is more than a page or three. You'll learn a little about about a lot of different things: just enough to understand the gist of it, but not enough to make you an expert (great for conversation starters!).

                      Overall, a good read.

Just reading these very short question and answer chapters on physics related to everyday observations and questions in a quick-reading, casual, and humorous style helped me tremendously in grasping and applying the concepts to my radiographic physics class. I wasn't searching for something to help me...just saw the book in the gift shop at our city's science center and thought it looked interesting. I was ahead of a lot of people in my class because of it. (God helps me!)
