Book Description

Few regions rival the magnificence of California's Monterey Peninsula. This beauty, together with a mild climate, rich history, and simplicity of lifestyle, encouraged the development of one of the nation's foremost art colonies. From 1875 to the first years of the twentieth century, artists were drawn to the towns of Monterey, Pacific Grove, and then Carmel. Artists at Continent's End is the first in-depth examination of the importance of the Monterey Peninsula, which during this period came to epitomize California art. Beautifully illustrated with a wealth of images, including many never before published, this book tells the fascinating story of eight principal protagonists--Jules Tavernier, William Keith, Charles Rollo Peters, Arthur Mathews, Evelyn McCormick, Francis McComas, Gottardo Piazzoni, and photographer Arnold Genthe--and a host of secondary players who together established an enduring artistic legacy.
Most previous accounts claim that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire were the reason that artists began to gather on the Monterey Peninsula. Shields challenges this view by demonstrating that the colony began much earlier--and in Monterey, not Carmel, as often asserted. In an absorbing narrative that combines art and social history, Shields describes how, beginning with Jules Tavernier's arrival in 1875, art produced on the peninsula broke from its East and West Coast antecedents to become increasingly subjective, meditative, and simple. He maintains that, by the turn of the century, the majority of the artists in the region had arrived at a tonal style featuring moody atmospheric effects. Some went one step farther, producing canvases reductive in color and form; others practiced a more colorful impressionism. Created to accompany a major traveling exhibition of works of the Monterey Peninsula Art Colony, Artists at Continent's End places the movement in its art-historical context, comparing its achievement with other approaches including the Barbizon style, art nouveau, arts-and-crafts, and impressionism.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent text, awful book design, mediocre printing.......2006-08-20

Scholars, I believe, will love the text of this book. The general public and scholars will hate the fact that the illustrations are only slightly larger than postage stamps. The captions occupy as much space as the illustrations do. This book was clearly designed by someone who has no idea how illustrations and text should relate to one another. Shame on the University of California Press for destroying an excellent text with poor design and only average printing.

2 out of 5 stars A dissapointment.......2006-08-14

Being very interested in artists featured in this book I placed an order only to find that the repros are relatively scarce and rather small.
Generally speaking, I really can't understand the authors of artist's monographs these days.
It seems as though they have really hard time figuring out what their readers expect.

Well, if some of that odd sort of people read this, I'll solve the great mistery here, once and forever - the readers want NICE, LARGE PICTURES.

For some unfathomable reason, the writers and their editors think that the people who buy artists' monographs are interested in laaarge (often boring) essays, that they LOVE small reproductions and that they're really fond of margins 2"-3" thick.

In a nutshell - if you expect large repros, avoid this book.

Admittedly, the pictures are of high quality, but the averagely sized 4-5 inches. There's lot of repros smaller than that and several larger. In one of the essays you can read 18 pages without seeing a single color illustration.

-- Kevin Robins, Goldsmiths College, University of London

The past 20 years have seen remarkable growth in research and scholarship addressing new information and communication technologies and their social contexts. Often called `new media' research, this growing field is both international and interdisciplinary.

The Handbook of New Media sets out boundaries of new media research and scholarship and provides a definitive statement of the current state-of-the-art of the field. Divided into six sections covering major problem areas of research, the Handbook includes an introductory essay by the editors and a concluding essay by Ronald E Rice. Each chapter, written by an internationally renowned scholar, provides a review of the most significant social research findings and insights.

This Handbook will be an indispensable volume on the personal bookshelves of all scholars working in the area, required reading for graduate students, a reference work for established researchers and newcomers to new media scholarship, and an intellectual benchmark for the field.

Integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into governance processes can greatly enhance the delivery of public services to all citizens. ICTs integration will not only improve the performance of governance systems, it will also transform relationships amongst stakeholders, thus influencing policymaking processes and regulatory frameworks. In the developing world, however, the potential of ICTs for effective governance remains largely unexplored and unexploited. This book presents the context, theory, and current thinking on the interaction between ICTs and local governance, particularly in Africa. It discusses the shift from "government" to "e-governance," describes the role of local-level authorities, and presents the benefits and limitations of introducing ICTs in government operations. Case studies from Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda describe local governance/ICTs projects executed by civil society organizations, academic institutions, and government authorities. Drawing from the findings in these case studies and from the introductory research and original conceptual framework, the book presents a series of conclusions and recommendation on the future of effective ICTs use for better governance and improved economic development at the local level. An important contribution to the literature on the subject of e-governance in general, and e-governance in Africa in particular, as well as of ICTs and development in Africa. - Joseph O. Okpaku, Sr., PhD (Telecom Africa International Corporation) This book will be of interest to professionals, practitioners, and policy advisors at local and national government levels in developing countries (particularly in Africa); international organizations staff, bilateral aid agencies, international financial institutions, civil society organizations, and private sector; researchers, academics, students, and professors of public administration and governance in Africa and throughout the world.

                  Book Description

Governments, the media, the information technology industry and scientists publicly argue that information and communication technologies (ICT) will bring about an inevitable transition from "industrial" to "information" or "knowledge-based" economies and societies. It is assumed that all aspects of our economic and social lives, in both the public and private spheres, will be radically different from what they are today. The World Summit on the Information Society (Geneva 2003 - Tunis 2005) shows the importance of a worldwide reflection on those topics.

Perspectives and Policies on ICT in Society explores the ICT policies of different nations and regions such as Africa, China, Europe, and India. The authors assess the arguments surrounding the impending new age, as well as some of the more sensitive issues of its developments. This progress will signal an expansion of ICT in many domains - the so-called ubiquity - such as in the workplace, the home, government, and education and it will affect privacy and professional ethics. The expansion will also encompass all parts of the earth, particularly developing countries. Such growth must take place in the context of historical dimensions and should underscore the accountability of professionals in the field.

The intent of this book is to address these issues and to serve as a handbook of IFIP's TC9 "Computers and Society" committee. Thirty authors from twelve countries consider the ICT policies with their associated perspectives and they explore what may be the information age and the digital society of tomorrow. The book provides reflection on today's complex society and addresses the uncertain developments rising from an increasingly global and technologically connected world.

Jacques Berleur is at the University of Namur, Belgium, and Chrisanthi Avgerou at the London School of Economics, United Kingdom.

Considered by many the peak of Osamu Tezuka's artistic achievement and called his "life work" by the author, PHOENIX is made up 12 complex stories linked by the presence of the mythical bird, an immortal guarden of the universal life force. Read in order, the separate stories jump across time, alternating between a distant future and a distant past, converging on the present, with characters from one story being reincarnated in another. The 12 stories over 3000 pages.

Part whodunit, part pop culture craziness, Peep Fiction is a testament to the unbelievable popularity of and goofiness surrounding America's #1 selling non-chocolate candy.

Alert the media-a prominent Peepsville family of marshmallow Peeps has gone missing! Told primarily through newspaper and magazine stories, their mysterious disappearance provides the basis for this weird and hilarious whodunit. How did the Peeps family find themselves in such a predicament? Who is responsible? And more importantly, can they be rescued before their sell-by dates?

Clues (and some crafty characters) abound as you peep through the pages of the Peepsville local newspaper, an old Peepsville High School yearbook, and of course, the infamous Peeple Magazine. With craft ideas included throughout-because, after all, 1/3 of all peeps are purchased for purposes other than eating-this goofy book, sure to be a big hit with Peeps fans everywhere, celebrates the zaniness of peep culture while offering up something all its own. Sweet, silly, and immensely popular all over the country, Peeps have finally found a book to call their own!

                                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love how a guinea pig is their school mascot........2006-12-10

I've always ragged on my sister for her Eastertime peep-cravings as I've never enjoyed the candy myself (although they are really cute). So I had to buy her this witty, wacky, sweet book.

Not only is it full of hilarious pictures (like a rendering of the painting "The Scream" with a yellow peep doing the screaming) but it has plenty of text to keep you engaged with the book for a while. Although perusing the book for its photos is a riot in itself. Also, there are several storylines--the peeps' field trip to the museum, Father peep having to pull himself together for work after slightly melting in his cup of coffee, and of course the mystery at the center of the book--so you always wonder what's on the next page.

One of my faves is a pictures of two peeps with a (human-sized) yearbook. One of them says something like, "I love old yearbooks." The other replies, "Dang, how do we open it?"

Why is this so funny? I don't know, it just is!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-07-28

This is a great book. I found an advertisement for it in a Magazine, and I asked for it for Easter. I got it, and I thought it was HILARIOUS! I like how they changed actors names, such as Peeper Sutherland and Brad Peep .
The only thing I didn't like about it was the section about Runyoun Peep Jones. I found it a bit inapropriate. Over All, I give it five stars. It was a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars By far the most original, zany Easter tale of 2006.......2006-05-20

PEEPS: A CANDY-COATED TALE is by far the most original, zany Easter tale of 2006. As such, it deserves ongoing recommendation and mention for any fan (or not!) of the marshmallow candy, whether child or adult. A prominent Peepsville family has gone missing and the Peeps are up in arms. Photos of the candy peeps are embellished with hats, glasses and more as the denizens of Peepsville are presented with character embellishments, plots and subplots. The perfect Easter gift - and perfect for any engaged by Peeps candies. One of the most creative top picks of the Easter holiday season.

                                    I wasn't even a Peep's fan, but of course now I am.
The book makes a great gift too.

To be honest, I had never heard of Peeps before. I was in the book store and the insanely colorful cover got my attention. So I bought a copy and took it home. It was great. Very funny with a bit of an edge. Who knows, maybe I'll even buy some Peeps to eat. Although it would feel a bit like canabalism now. I recommend this book to everyone.
