Book Description
On the night of December 3, 1984, Anjali waits for her army officer husband to pick her up at the train station in Bhopal, India. In an instant, her world changes forever. Her anger at his being late turns to horror when a catastrophic gas leak poisons the city air. Anjali miraculously survives. Her marriage does not.
A smart, successful schoolteacher, Anjali is now remarried to Sandeep, a loving and stable professor. Their lives would be nearly perfect, if not for their young son’s declining health. But when Anjali’s first husband suddenly reappears in her life, she is thrown back to the troubling days of their marriage with a force that impacts everyone around her.
Her first husband’s return brings back all the uncertainty Anjali thought time and conviction had healed–about her decision to divorce, and about her place in a society that views her as scandalous for having walked away from her arranged marriage. As events unfold, feelings she had guarded like gold begin to leak away from her, spreading out into the world and challenging her once firm beliefs.
Rich in insight into Indian culture and psychology, A Breath of Fresh Air resonates with meaning and the abiding power of love. In a landscape as intriguing as it is unfamiliar, Anjali’s struggles to reconcile the roles of wife and ex-wife, working woman and mother, illuminate both the fascinating duality of the modern Indian woman and the difficult choices all women must make.

Customer Reviews:
Well written but not a riveting story.......2007-08-22
While I liked this book a lot and read it quickly, the characters never did really grab me. I felt that they could have been developed further and that the story was not that engaging. It's a good read for an airplane or the beach but you do not find yourself immersed in the story. Compare this to A Space Between Us (look this one up if you haven't read it) - A Breath of Fresh Air is not nearly as compelling.
A Tear Jerker.......2007-07-10
The book was a good, quick read. I couldn't put it down until I was done. I balled my eyes out (haha), the author did a great job of drawing the reader in to understanding the characters emotions.
Ok to Good, short easy read.......2006-05-30
If you're interested in a short, quick/easy read with insight into the conflict of modern Indian women, then this book is for you.
I was only slightly intersted in the topic but purchased the book based upon the glowing reviews and because I enjoy reading an author's first work. I thought it was sad, but interesting, and thought the author did a good job portraying the conflicts experienced by modern Indian women, in terms of tradition, expectations, family and cultural influences.
While I thought the characters were well developed and enjoyed how the novel was written through differen vantage points in terms of time and characters, I thought the storyline itself was a too underdeveloped and finished the book wanting something more and feeling unfulfilled.
tragic tale.......2006-05-04
The tale is tragic but heartwarming. I had never heard of the Bhopal gas tragedy, and it was interesting and sad to learn about it through fiction. The book is easy to read, enjoyable, and paints a picture of life in India for one woman. I recommend it as a quick and fun read, but not one that will change your perspective on life. The author did move me to tears, so for this, I give her four stars.
This got published?.......2005-12-03
The book starts off with an interesting premise, but the execution is horrible. The writing is pathetic and i can say with a fair amount of certainty, that my 10 year old son can make better sentences. The characters are as flat as pancakes and as interesting as navel lint. There is no development to the story and the initial villian undergoes a change of heart without thought, provocation or incident (much to the story's convenience). The story is obviously written with western audiences in mind as no one in India greets anyone with a "how are you doing." Innumerable discrepancies like this, play havoc with ones acceptance of the story. Ms Malladi's use of the Bhopal gas tragedy as a background is probably the only reason this terrible project saw the light of day, otherwise it would have remained, as it probably should have,a figment of her imagination.

Book Description
Charlotte Lawrence, widowed at 34, decides to return to the village of her childhood. It means moving into Ivy Cottage, pretty if overgrown, and suffering the attentions of her interfering sister Hilary. Most of all, it means Alex, Ivy Cottage’s drop-dead gorgeous tenant.
Customer Reviews:
Predictable.......2005-07-05
When Charlotte's husband, Peter is killed in a car crash in Brussels, where they were stationed with his company, she takes on a massive burden of guilt. Life with Peter has been cold and loveless as he married her, purely to spite his unforgiving parents. On the very morning of the accident, she had asked him for a divorce so that she might return to her family in England. He flatly refused, and set off on a car trip in an agitated state, leaving her with the guilt that she was the cause of his death. Returning to England, she buys a small cottage near her parents and sister and lets the attached Granny flat to an interesting man in his thirties. The remainder of the story is fairly predictable and includes an amiable vicar, the village gossip, the village sleaze, misunderstandings and happy endings. It's a pleasant story if a bit Mills and Boon.

not as tedious as actually reading Little Women.......2006-12-17
The main character has a distant scholar father and a practical New England mother who decides to become an antique dealer; they are divorcing. The main character (Brooke?) is writing a paper on Louisa May Alcott and visits Concord, Mass with her devoted sort of boyfriend. In the course of her research, she decides that Louisa May Alcott's adored dad was selfish and unsuccessful and realizes that her sturdy practical boyfriend and sturdy practical mother are more valuable than she first knew. I wouldn't say that this book was enjoyable for me but it was well-written as all of Betty Cavanna's books are and it was different from my own experiences with some new information. I imagine that this must be one of the author's less popular titles. I inexplicably ended up with a bunch of Betty Cavanna's more obscure titles which I read just to read them. I'm not sure I can recommend this book. It made me not feel any urge to visit Massachusettes.

Customer Reviews:
Fun book and interesting, bad historical information alert.......2007-09-28
I found this book at a garage sale. It was fun to read. The characters were interesting. There were a few historical inaccuracies that drove me crazy.
I woman of that time would never consider refusing her husband on their wedding night. At that time in history, sex between a husband and wife could never be considered rape. These concepts simply didn't exist.
A wife couldn't get an annulment unless perhaps she had proof of that the husband never intended to remain faithful. In other words, Gavin could say he was going to continue with Alice, but unless he followed that with actually commiting adultery, there would be no cause for an annulment.
Slapping a wife, in those days, probably wouldn't be equated with wife beating. A beating would probably have to be severe, before anyone took it seriously. Although, I think any physical abuse is disgusting.
The part where Judith is held captive in the castle, and the Walter cuts her clothes off, is just plain stupid. There were a few other stupid parts, but the book has potential.
This is my second time reading a Jude Deveraux Book - much better!.......2007-05-14
After reading my first Jude Deveraux book (I cannot remember the name of the book), I was totally put off from reading anymore of her books. But then a friend suggested I try the "Velvet Promise. I loved it. This was similar to my favorite authors Kathleen Woodiwiss, Julie Garwood & Judith Mcnaught. I hope to continue finishing off this series and I hope all the books are similar or better. I would like to add and agree with the previous customers that "rape scenes" does not belong in historical romances.
typical early 80's romance.......2007-02-02
i was very dissapointed in this book - although i admit i shouldn't have been and might not have been had i looked at the publication date.
the basic plot line goes like this - Judith is forced to marry a man who is in love with another woman but who wants her for what she can bring him. Gavin (the supposed hero) is in love with Alice, who becomes wed to another man.
***SPOILERS***
I HATED the first part of this book - I almost put through it away. Gavin rapes Judith on their wedding night, after declaring his love for another woman on his and Judith's wedding day (oh yeah, and slapping her and knocking her over). Basically he acted like the cruel and unbending man that he is. He never believed his wife and constantly accused her of what he was doing or thinking of doing. Further, he nearly got her killed (more than once) because he refused to see what everyone else saw in the woman he claims he loves, who is evil incarnate.
*** END OF SPOILERS***
Judith was one character I liked. She was brave and mostly true to herself, and very inventive. Basically she was a strong woman who made the best out the hand she was dealt. Gavin on the other hand was a hard man who refused to let go of his prejudices and opinions. To be quite frank, he was brutal and caused Judith all sorts of harm, directly and indirectly. He does attempt (somewhat unsuccessfully in my opinion) to redeem himself by the end, but in my opinion it was too little too late.
That being said, I did like his brothers, they amused me. The other characters helped make this story bearable. Judith's mother and her romance was very sweet.
In my opinion, I would recommend skipping this book unless you are a huge fan of Deveraux, in which case just check it out of the library.
Enjoy your reading :)
A wonderful promise..........2006-03-16
I had looked forward to reading the Velvet series for the longest time but was reluctant to read The Velvet Promise because I was told that there was some violence against the heroine on the hero's part. So, with much wariness, I began to read the first installment of the series that began the Montgomery family saga. The year is 1501. Judith Revedoune is an independent woman who dreams of becoming a prioress, a position in the nunnery that is highly respected for women. But her abusive father has other plans. He forces her to marry Gavin Montgomery. Gavin isn't thrilled with the prospect of marriage himself. His heart belongs to Alice Valence, but she is to marry another. So he marries Judith, mainly because she is the Revedoune heiress. He is attracted to the beautiful redhead with the golden eyes from the moment he sees her, and it would not be difficult for him to fall in love with her, but Alice does whatever is possible to hold on to Gavin. Alice wants her cake and eat it too, and she won't allow another woman to take away Gavin's devotion to her. There are many twists throughout the novel.
This is one intense, emotionally-driven novel full of twists and intrigue. I couldn't put it down. Alice is one of the most cold-blooded villainesses I have read in a historical romance. The way she seems to have a hold on Gavin, that he is unable to see through this sharp, scheming woman, is amazing if a bit over the top at times. I do marvel at her keen intelligence and conning ways. She even murders quite a few people, so this woman is a villainess through and through. I hated Gavin at first. I just wanted to shake the bloody idiot and slap some sense into him. It is obvious to me that he denies himself his growing feelings for Judith because of this romantic notion he has of Alice. And the fact that he rapes and hits Judith because of Alice leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (That last part isn't a spoiler per se, for many reviewers have already revealed that this happens in the novel.) I have said before that the hero raping the heroine isn't romantic, no matter how integral that storyline may be, and that is why I give this four stars instead of five. I just don't like to read about violence against women, period. I know this was written during the bodice ripper craze in the seventies and eighties, but still. Anyway, Judith is a great heroine, a fighter who doesn't yield to Gavin no matter how much he tries to break her spirit. She is strong and determined and has become one of my favorite Deveraux heroines. The Velvet Promise is a wonderful start to the Velvet series and I look forward to reading the three other books. Jude Deveraux has become one of my favorite authors and she has once again delivered a novel so engrossing it is impossible to put down once you start reading it.
Dissappointed.......2005-12-11
I love JD and have most of her books on my bookshelf. This one let me down. I tried not to let other reviews influence my judgment and so purchased the digital edition. After a few chapters, I found myself scanning and skipping a page then two.
If you love historical romance and JD, I recommend WISHES, COUNTERFEIT LADY, THE RAIDER, THE PRINCESS, THE CONQUEST.
If you have no preferences, I recommend Jill Barret (WONDERFUL, THE HEART'S HAVEN, JUST A KISS AWAY, IMAGINE...) and Catherine Coulter (MAD JACK, LORD HARRY, THE DUKE, the SONG and MAGIC series). Other great reads are HANNAH'S HALF BREED (Heidi Betts), A PIRATE OF HER OWN, THE RUNAWAY PRINCESS (Christina Dodd), EVERYTHING AND THE MOON (Julia Quinn), MARRYING MISCHIEF, A MARRIAGE BY CHANCE (Carolyn Davidson), LIONHEART & THE ROGUE AND THE HELLION (Connie Mason), FORBIDDEN & BEAUTIFUL DREAMER(Elizabeth Lowell), SO SPEAKS THE HEART (Johanna Lindsey), SILK and STEEL & SECRET WAYS (Kat Martin), LORD OF MY HEART & DARK CHAMPION (Jo Beverly)

Buy this book!!.......2007-10-03
Dante "Danny" Valentine is angry, confused, has a bad past (what bounty hunter doesn't?), obsesses about her dead lover, and deals with her problems and feelings by trying to avoid them. She's no Buffy, although she does have a run-in with some vampires. All in all, an intelligent, well-thought-out universe, a rip-roaring story, and just enough confusion about what is going on in this future history to make you work harder to understand the motivations and actions of the characters. I wish I had written it!
Dante's Dark Past.......2007-09-26
The novel is Dante's backstory served up with a serial killer murder mystery plot. The witty quips that gave the first novel panache are replaced by an atmosphere of serious angst at unspeakable deeds. Compared to the humor/action/drama balance of book one, this novel was more ordeal than enjoyment. It fills out the world of the Hegemony, but also introduces overdone supernatural elements like vampires (Nichtvren) and were(cain). An average novel, hoping later books are as good as the first.
Loved it as much as the first one!.......2007-09-05
Love Dante's character in this series. Couldn't wait to read this sequel to Working for the Devil to find out what problems arose for her this go round! I was not disappointed. If you love Dante Valentine you'll love this one. Lot's of action, suspense, tears, anguish, pain, *happiness*...it was a read on the edge of your seat kinda book. The Devil has come looking for her again. Dark and edgy.
Number 1 on My List.......2007-08-09
You can read any one of the 50 or 60 plot synopses on the reviewers page, but let me cut to the chase. This book is about grief: gut-wrenching, oh-god-make-it-stop, end-of-the-word grief.
Saintcrow's Dante Valentine is one of the most "beat-up" characters I've ever encountered in a book. She is so inundated by loss, she goes through the entire story afloat on a sea of emotional agony, most engendered by the loss she experienced in the last book (also a good read, but not as emotional), but much by the resurrected ghosts of her own past that she must deal with in this installment. Either way, Valentine's in a world of hurt, and Saintcrow's writing draws you into that pain, tosses you about on the waves, and lands you, cathartic, on surprisingly soft shore.
The story is fast-paced, the characters interesting and sympathetic, and the world enticing. This is dark urban fantasy at its best.
Fascinating!.......2007-07-28
In Lilth Saintcrow's latest Dante Valentine novel, the scene is set for about a year later, several months and Dante is still mourning over the loss of Japh. She keeps his urn that is filled with his remains and tries to keep herself busy with hunts so that she won't think about Japh. Not that she needs the money that they provide, for she is still set for life from the devil's payment from last time.
But suddenly people Dante knows from her past are dying. They are the same people that suffered with her at the horrendous Rigger Hall and the devious and evil headmaster, who was brutally murdered by some of the students one fataful night and it is these setudents involved who are being killed. Dante doesn't want to take the case at first, because than she would be forced to remember Rigger Hall and all its horrors, but eventually complies. Still having Jace live with her, together they set out and do the research required to solve the case. But things start to getr serious.
For one thing the Devil has been calling upon her asking for Japh, who is dead. Dante is furious and confused by this. Why would he call asking for Japh, when it was he who killed him? As Dante gets closer to discovering the mystery behind the murders another death close to home occurs. It is then Dante has had enough and decides that she will do this hunt alone and finish it, even if she loses her own life. But when it comes to the final battle some unexpected help comes her way.
Overall a great book. At times it did run a little slow, like the characters were going in circles, but eventually after a few pages the action does pick up. The next Dante novel is due out in Sept. Then another in Nov. And the last one in Jan. 08!

Reader from NJ.......2000-01-10
I bought this book not being familiar with the author's prior works and was pleased to discover that it is a compendium of other books. It is organized simply and concisely in a way that enhances one's spiritual experience reading through it with additional exercises which are optional and bible readings. This book taught me a great deal about living in the Presence from an author who obviously "walks the walk". I recommend this book to Quakers and all who are seeking the Presence in their lives.
