A LITTLE SUSPICION LIKE A LITTLE WINE IS GOOD FOR YOU.......2007-08-19
When it comes to women mystery writers, I am truly devoted to Joy Fielding. She has the ability to probe into the psyches of her characters with the precision worthy of a gifted surgeon. She forces her readers to question their own feelings about love, trust, truth, friendship, and whether or not we should listen to the "little man in our heads" and follow our instincts.
Without sacrificing the plot line or giving away pertinent details, let me just say that this story of two women of divergent age and character living on a property in Delray Florida is guaranteed to hook you from the first page. You will find yourself being slowly reeled into this drama that begins as a light spring shower, builds to a thunderstorm and finally ramps up into a full scale hurricane. The unexpected twists and turns keep you continuously second-guessing the actions and decisions being made by the characters and the finale will leave you dumbfounded.
WARNING: Get out your rubber finger protector because if you fail to protect your digit you will, in all probability, develop a blister caused by the speed at which you will be turning the pages to see what happens next.
O M G.......2007-06-14
I READ THE BOOK AND IT BECAME MY FAVORITE BOOK. I HAVE RECOMENDED IT TO MANY PPL AND THEY AGREE. YOU WONT REGRET GETTING IT. THE BOMB.
Very Mysterious.......2007-05-02
If you like mystery, you will love this book. I finished it in one day and the only reason is because I kept waiting on that happy ending that never came. Then, I had to watch Nickelodeon, so I could go to bed and not think about this book. Very shocking!!!
Surprise Ending.......2007-04-05
The ending seems to come out of nowhere, and you'll be delightfully entertained by all the twists and turns in this novel.
I really liked it!.......2007-02-02
I bought this book on a sale rack at books-a-million. I was attracted to it b/c I have read a few of Joy's books in the past and loved them so I went ahead and got it. I read some reviews after I bought it and thought oh no, but I really enjoyed it. It was very entertaining and had a great twist that I didn't see coming. It is one of the better books I have read in awhile. If you have liked Joy's books before or just want to read something entertaining then I would highly recommend this book to you.

Book Description
Teachers and others caught in false allegation misconduct are facing the decimation of their careers. This book is a survival plan for teachers, school administrators, and others working with young people. It details both proactive and reactive measures that the accused should know in the event of an allegation. This book will help them to know and to protect their rights. No one knows how many careers have been ended by students who intend retribution for reasons as varied as extortion, revenge, misplaced affection, or sheer malice. No data or studies have documented the extent of the problem. A few experts say false allegations never happen; others say it rarely happens. Yet false allegations are all too common. Educators and other professionals who work with young people know that such allegations can be career killers, yet their ruined lives often become silent statistics due to the stigma of shame surrounding the charges. This book looks at relevant law, policies, criminal investigation procedures, and problem behavior, offering an informative and easy-to-use guide that will assist practitioners, administrators, and anyone beginning a career with children and youth.

Perceptions are often different.......2007-03-24
There really does seem to be a great deal of bitterness in Monty's family. That itself is a giveaway. If Monty's father really was the good guy they make him out to be, there would be no need at all to try and smear Monty's reputation. My own mother beat me (with a kind of sadistic pleasure) and was completely convinced she was doing the right thing, even calling it "God's work" and completely convinced of the need to "break your child's spirit", much the same way that people "break" horses. Needless to say, I still have some serious issues with my mother while on the other hand my sister absolutely adored her ("you don't beat girls" my mother always said.)
Yep. Monty's story has a ring of truth to it while his relatives just seem to be jealous of his success and honesty. Pity.
Mine, Yours, and the Truth.......2006-10-08
There are three sides to every story, and the fact is, each child has different parents than does anyone else. My sisters were raised by the same people I was, but each of us was treated differently.
I love my children, they are individuals and what is effective with one child is often ineffective with another. As a result, they have been treated differently, and have different views on who I am, as their parent.
I know firsthand, too, that in abusive homes:
1) years ago, abuse was very well hidden and not talked about by those who did know of it (and unfortunately, often still is)
2) the oldest child usually gets the worst of it
3) boys often get the worst of it, while their sisters are shown a completely different side of their parents.
My point? Good, bad, right or wrong, we each see our upbringing in a unique way. Some of our memories change for the better or worse in subsequent years. Only Monty Roberts and his maker know whether everything he writes/says is fact or not. It may or may not be the truth as he recalls it. It may or may not be sensationalized...just as his sisters' work may or may not be sensationalized.
Even his parents would see only their own views of it...just as Monty and his sisters each see their own sides.
Bottom line for me is not whether his methods are original (he admits that they are not, and gives credit to others as he said he knew it at the time), not whether his sisters are slamming him justly or unjustly, but
whether his the methods he promotes have helped humans and horses coexist more peacefully, more painlessly.
Have they?
Bitter Relatives.......2006-08-22
Monty Roberts has demonstrated to the world many times that he understands the horse. As he has said on many occasions, he did not come up with the horse whispering aspect of it. The American Indians were the first to do that. As for the abuse he suffered at the hands of his parents, when the doors are closed you don't know what goes on behind them. My Grandmother and Mother were well respected, church-going women in the community. All the while, I was beaten, tied to a bed like a dog, etc.
I don't think Roberts is a super hero at all. He has faults just like the rest of us. But I have seen some evidence in his techniques of what he can do and if he has abused horses or lied about the way he has trained, then he WILL be held accountable. However, this does go BOTH ways. I do NOT recommend this book, and if I had the chance I would have given this review no stars! The book is coated with anger, malice, snide remarks and bitternes. It leaves me to wonder who really is misleading who?
Love is the answer.......2006-08-09
Many experienced horsepeople have tried to test Monty by bringing in known dangerous horses. Monty has done extremely well with them. No doubt the Queen of England has done her research on Monty, as have many other serious horselovers. There will always be and have always been people who communicate well with horses. Monty is blessed to be who he is. Many people can be jealous and harsh, but my animals appreciate what I am learning.
As for the abuse, remember, at that time it was normal and proper for certain behaviors to exist. Shame was greater then, things were well hidden. Monty probably didn't cry. His story is so typical of abused children. No doubt his parents did alot of wonderful things too, and were loved and respected by their niece. Things can happen in families, people turn a blind eye. Ask any social worker or counselor how much abuse is hidden. It is also typical for other family members to condemn the victim, particularly if they don't abide by the family's unwritted rules. That is the illness, the disease, the dysfunction manifesting itself, over and over again. It is mirrored in society. Abuse exists. Today we call it what it is. Sad that so many refuse to believe. Read some real stories and cry - learn something you don't know. See the big picture. Make a difference.
Advertisement of Anger.......2006-05-14
This book and its review seems to me to be all about anger and how a revengeful sister cannot live with the thought that her own parents are not perfect. The glorifying alone gives me a sense of her instability. If the father was such a great one he'd have taught his children how to love instead of showing them how to hate. I've seen and read a few of Monty Roberts books before I went to see him as he crossed the country with his horse training, and could hear it in his voice the peacefulness that horses must hear when they listen to him. He is a very calming person who loves not only his work but also animals, and children. The care that he takes in the treatment of the animals and the way he talked to them was truely amazing. Whether he is like Columbus in his discovery or not, people "hear" what he has to say, because he "shows us" that poor treatment of anything, even in a disguised form can be detrimental. As you can see, in his own reviews of his books he hasnt once mistreated his own sister who so easily, and with forked tongue, attacks him. It is very evident to me if the father was such a great and loving person he would have show his daughter how to love one another . At leat the son learned early on anyway, and that is truely remarkable. I am glad he passes it on to his animals and his truely amazing children.

Book Description
Lily Langdon has finally grown up. Now that her brother the duke's completely malleable best friend Edward Wallis has been brutally (and luckily) rebuffed by his intended, Lily knows her chance for a very permissive and entirely convenient husband is here. In fact, he is staying in her very own home for a house party.
But this promising party's tone is quickly changed by a horrible twist of fate that threatens Edward's very life. Nothing but luck can save Edward, but Lily's heart is lost for good when she sees what a strong and devoted man he can be in times of trouble. Lily has set her cap on a man who should be unlovable and fallen more in love than she ever thought possible. Their passion brings great risk, but when a man and a woman prove to be so much more together than they were apart, is there anything that their love cannot overcome?

Expected More, Got Less .......2006-07-30
Lily and Whitby were my favorite characters from MacLean's first novel, TO MARRY A DUKE, so I was highly anticipating LOVE ACCORDING TO LILY even before its release. This book, however, didn't live up to my expectations. Although the beginning started well, the story became flat and dull soon after. I was so disappointed! This story of unrequited love had so much potential. Yet it lacked the emotional intensity and passion I craved. I couldn't believe how Lily was transformed into such a whimpy and needy character. (She was so delightful in TO MARRY A DUKE). Also, I disliked how her love was so one-sided. Whitby did show genuine affection for Lily (treating her almost like a little sister). However, his love for her was never convincing. Although I have read only two MacLean novels, both have been total disappointments! Don't think I'll read another MacLean novel again.
Not Again.......2006-07-12
Why Why Why does Mrs. MacLean feel she must in every and I mean every book invent a hero who is so CRUEL. The first book I read by her was "To Marry A Duke" need I say more and now we have our current problem I don't mean that nicely. The descriptions she protrays of her heros are just down right horrible. Poor Lily scraps by in this (love) story for some ounce of love from husband and recieves none till then very end and it was just not convincing for me in the least. I did read the other reviews (I always do) and I can't understand at all why anyone would who reads romance would find it romantic for the hero in the book to be cruel and the heroine to have no backbone and just take what she gets. Would you? Please!I love romance novels, mystery, supsense novels but if I am reading a romance am I not supposed to feel that while I am reading it. This author seems to be failing me at every turn.
I would pass - save your money.......2006-03-24
This was very sweet love story of a man who was rake and feel in love with Lily after they were married. Lily had loved Whitby aka the rake all her life and was willing to marry without love. This book took me three days to read and was very sad slow book. I would suggest instead One Little Sin by Liz Carlyle or The Lady Lies by Samantha Saxon.
Childish and pathetic.......2005-11-29
I was prepared to love this book - the premise sounded extremely promising. However, the more I got into it, the more disgusted I became. The writing is extremely childish. Lily's character was PATHETIC - literally BEGGING Whitby for crumbs of affection. Have some self-respect, girl! Grow a damn backbone! It was disgusting. And Whitby's falling in love with her by the end was not convincing. Seemed like she browbeated him into loving her until he was too tired so he just gave in. UGH.
This book commits the sin of being DULL!.......2005-11-02
I did like Ms. Maclean's "To Marry The Duke", I really did -- but unfortunately, she seems to have gone steadily downhill as a writer from that point. THIS book is particularly dull, flat and episodic. The writing is not fresh, nor are the characters.
The biggest problem is that none of the characters are memorable; they are ALL without question stock romance-novel characters, with NO life to them. Just for example, the Sophia of this book is NOTHING like the Sophia of To Marry The Duke, and James, her husband, has become a stick figure. Admittedly, the conflicts of this book do not directly involve them, but a supporting character should have SOME character!
Whitby the rake, and Lily the girl who would love to reform him...These characters are so familiar, and so dully written, even their bedroom scenes are lacking energy, despite Ms. Maclean's descriptive powers. The opening chapters move soooo slowly (I usually appreciate a novel that takes time to set up all the pieces, but not in this case); the characters are all too familiar (but not interestingly so), and finally, the plot became so predictable, I was skimming by Chapter 4!
I am very disappointed with the way this saga has panned out. As stated, To Marry The Duke, about the romance of the duke of the title (James) and Sophia, the rich American title-seeker, started it off very well. But the two sequels about Sophia's sisters, Clara & Adele, were basically just sex romps with no depth. And this little detour involving James' sister, Lily, is more of the same.

innocuous.......2007-08-26
A nice little book full of simple, innocuous sayings displaying a keen grasp of the obvious. But by and large, I didn't find anything that really grabbed me, anything that made me think "Wow!" I did find one or two exceptions to this. Rogers writes:
"Sometimes, though, I wonder if we confuse strength with other words - like aggression, and even violence."
I wonder what Mister Rogers would have made of politicians defining "strength" as "support for war."
he should've been president.......2007-08-08
this ought to be a required textbook in all the schools and colleges in the world.it is that good without a doubt.
Great Book.......2007-05-14
Great book to have on the coffee table. Just a quick read with great thoughts.
Don't just read it; study it!.......2007-04-19
When I sat down with this book I intended to give it a quick read and set it aside. And then I read it a second time and TOOK NOTES because I found so many pieces and parts of the book inspiring and eye-opening and comforting.
For instance, Mr. Rogers says that when he was a boy and there were tragedies in the news, his mom would tell him, "look for the helpers; look for the people who are helping others." That shifted his perspective and helped assuage some of his fears.
Another treasure is the introduction by Mrs. Rogers (Joanne) who states, "The person Fred became in his later years came out of growth and struggle. As he got older, it seemed as if the nurturing of his soul and mind became more and more important...Discipline was his very strong suit."
And in another part of the intro she states that if she were to isolate a single thing that changed Fred's life more than anything else, it was a statement made by Dr. Margaret McFarland, a mentor and teacher. "She let him know it was okay to be sensitive."
Reading that was a comfort, since most of us "sensitive souls" are repeatedly admonished to "stop being so sensitive," and yet it is that very sensitivity that should be nurtured and developed in artists and writers.
Several months ago, I made extensive notes of this book and re-read them each morning as part of my daily mediations. That's how much I loved "The World According to Mister Rogers."
It's a well-written, easy-to-read book that leaves a lasting impression.
A lovely gift.......2007-02-06
This is a gift of Mr. Rogers wonderful heart and spirit and can be a gift to any friend who needs his grounded, centering message.

no title.......2005-12-22
This ranks with Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" as one of the best fantasies ever written, I think. As that was, this too is a great work of fiction. It is an actual retelling the diverse legends of the Mabinogion (Welsh myth) in novel form. Walton, like all great writers, deals with the larger issues of Good, Evil, Love, all the while unraveling one terrific yarn . Written in 1936, she was still alive in Tucson in 1993. About druids and their magical powers, this is a monumental tragedy in the vein of Hamlet, Lear, Macbeth. Elegantly written, rich with the power of Welsh myth, an absolutely spellbinding story - of love, ambition, betrayal. Formerly titled "The Virgin and the Swine"; current title refers to England. I was so sorry to have finished it, and must reread it someday. If you like Tolkien, don't miss this one!

Customer Reviews:
From A Thinker Comes Words The Christian World Needs To Hear!.......2007-10-08
Biblical literalists insisting that theirs is the only way to correctly understand/interpret the Bible turn many a would-be believer into one who runs in the opposite direction-quickly. Not to mention the fact that that those who believe in the complete inerrancy of the bible, usually act in less than gracious ways, i.e. "You don't believe like me, well then you're goin to hell, buddy." And what troubles me most is that they almost seem to like saying it.
But in this book, John Shelby Spong takes the Bible and reveals a living, breathing work. He speaks of the first century Christians as those who struggled with limited understanding of the laws of nature, and a theology in transition from law to grace. Spong eloquently and with great conviction reveals a God who wants to be involved with His creation, rather than a stern, demanding autocrat issuing edicts, requiring blood atonements, and self-hate.
As a Christian, I am not proud that through the centuries every bit of emotional, technological, and social progress was in spite of Christianity instead because of it. What did the church say when it was discovered that earth wasn't flat? Heresy! How did the church handle slavery? Not very well. How did the church handle women being eclesiastically involved? Terribly. When science sought discovery, instead of being enlightened, most Christians were threatened. The result? Thinking men and women of all times turned away from a wonderful, life-giving faith in God because religionists insisted it was their way or the highway.
Thankfully, that type of thinking seems to be waning. Or is it? Unfortunately, some politicians of the right-wing variety insist on marrying fundamentalism with politics for their own purposes. But the fact remains that no matter who says it or how large their number, you can't "scare" someone into a true relationship. If your primary fear is one of burning in a tormenting hell for eternity, then you have basically been manipulated. Nothing genuine then comes from the heart because your motivation is based on fear rather than love.
Jesus Christ brought a new concept of God and religion to the human race. He did not follow the accepted religious laws of His time. He took on the scribes and pharisees-constantly questioning, probing, teaching through parables, and loving the unlovable. It got him the cross. And many Christians have been crucifying him anew with ungracious theology in His name.
John Shelby Spong will challnege you to think of God and Jesus Christ in a whole new way. Past all the creeds, dogmas, and superstitions, God still waits with outstretched arms for a relationship with His children. This book is an excellent way of coming to understand a God of grace who bestows His love unconditionally and whose mercy endures forever.
Thank you, Bishop Spong.
Sometimes scholarly, sometimes atheistic.......2007-01-10
Spong has some valid points in this book. He accurately notes discrepancies between what literalists of the bible quote and what they ignore. This part of the book is an eye opener and provides food for thought. After establishing himself as an expert at picking the bible apart, however, Spong makes some claims that have little or no scholarly basis. For example, after establishing inconsistencies in the written text of the bible, he then completely discounts all of the miracles of in the bible claiming that they are not "scientific" enough. The tendency for some people reading this (and the danger therein) is that once readers accept Spong as an authority on scripture, they will accept anything he says, including statements he makes in a blanket fashion without supporting evidence. I, personally, agree that his concerns with taking everything from the bible literally are valid, yet I see no reason to think that every single miracle listed in the bible is therefore a lie.
RESCUING AMERICA FROM FUNDAMENTALISM!.......2006-12-12
This book is the antidote for the groundless claims of fundamentalists and other Biblical literalists who wish to enforce their Biblical interpretations on the rest of us via political pressure without even first questioning their own simplistic faith assumptions and presuppositions. Or doing the necessary study to explore the intelligent alternatives. Simple, direct, and brief, this marvelous little volume by Bishop Spong delivers broadside after broadside to the fundamentalist claims about the Bible. It takes the dogma of an "infallible bible" and exposes it for the fantasy that it is.
This is extremely important in today's world where an ever-growing angry mob of Biblical literalists seek to chase science out of our classrooms and replace it with fundamentalist religion under the guise of "intelligent design" or "scientific creationism."
Having once been a fundamentalist minister of the Evangelical Church Alliance, I know how fundamentalists think and what their agenda really is. For those of you who feel safe that fundamentalists will never succeed in their sociopolitical agenda, think again. They have already succeeded at the grassroots level. They have already convinced eighty percent of the American public that humans are the special creation of their God, and have thereby persuaded the American public to reject the scientific method and it's findings. Just as Biblical literalists did in the time of Galileo, they force science to take a back seat to faith in the empty unproven assertions of religious dogma. They have even succeeded in electing a fundamentalist to the presidency for two terms. Biblical literalists are now the majority on most school boards across the country. I would call that very successful, and something to be concerned about if you value your rights in our pluralistic and progressive society.
Most Christian fundamentalists follow a theology that until recently was called "Dominion theology." Just as the creationists tried to camouflage what they were really up to by changing the name of their pseudo science to "intelligent design," those same people wish to hide what Dominion Theology is all about by re-labeling it "Christian Reconstructionism" as well as other labels. Dominion theology is a fundamentalist manifesto, a call to bring all the people of the world under bondage to the barbaric laws of the Old Testament. Not content to inflict their religion simply upon themselves, fundamentalists believe they are divinely called and chosen to inflict their religion upon everyone. Unbalanced extremists such as Pat Robertson (who was a presidential candidate not that long ago) are delighted at the prospect of power. Power to imprison you or otherwise curtail and eliminate your Constitutional rights in the name of Jesus Christ. Such fundamentalists are actually the Borg: "Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated."
Fundamentalists will not rest until they have once again subsumed the world into the superstitious darkness of pre-Enlightenment credulity and ignorance. Are you, the reader, aware of what the world was like the last time civil government was in the hands of Christian "authorities?" We call that horrendously violent, ignorant, and superstitious period in Western history the Dark Ages. A very large and politically active segment of American fundamentalists wish to plunge the Western world back into those charming times. A time when any statement or belief that couldn't be backed up by a Biblical quotation was a "heresy" and brought arrest, confiscation of property, torture, and Christian execution upon the "heretic." To think that fundamentalist religion no longer breeds extremism, violence and corruption is to simply ignore reality, a reality that is played out daily on our television screens as well as in magazines and newspapers.
Rescuing the Bible From Fundamentalism lets the hot air out of the balloon of Bible nonsense these folks keep launching our way. If you are harassed and oppressed by a fundamentalist co-worker, family member, neighbor, or local school board, you need this book to shed the light of reality upon their fairy tale claims about the Bible. Bishop Spong supplies you with all the Biblical quotations you need to conclusively demonstrate the Bible is neither inerrant nor infallible. You will discover instead that the Bible is quite often primitive, savage, and self-contradictory. Christian fundamentalists have been strongly influenced by these large portions of primitive savage material in the Bible. One need only recall the murders of gays by Christian fundamentalists, their angry chants of "God hates fags!", the abortion clinics they have bombed, and the doctors and nurses they've murdered over the abortion issue. Bishop Spong demonstrates, using book, chapter, and verse from the Bible, why a literal interpretation of the Bible breeds racism, anger, fear, hatred, violence, and many other serious social ills that we see all around us.
For all their talk of "Jesus loves you" and "Have a nice eternity" these people are nonetheless as potentially dangerous as their Muslim counterparts, given the right "sinful" social conditions. Just ask Bishop Spong, who has had his life threatened many times by Christian fundamentalists for writing his books. If we moderns give up, surrender, and let Bible fundamentalists take over, we can kiss our Constitutional rights and modern world goodbye.
Use this book to effectively arm yourself so you can expose as groundless nonsense the claim that the Bible is inerrant and infallible. Inoculate your children against the mental virus of fundamentalism, whether Christian or Jewish. Rescuing The Bible From Fundamentalism should be in every home in the United States of America. It should be left in every motel and hotel room across this great nation of ours, right next to the very Bible it exposes.
JEHOVAH UNMASKED, which is a five-star read, should be there as well, finally destroying all vestiges of the fundamentalist delusion.
An Important Study. .......2006-08-25
It is interesting that many Churches place much emphasis on the strict and literal interpretation of the Bible. Isaac Asimov pointed out that the whole reason Jesus clashed with the Jewish authorities was because while they placed strict emphasis on keeping with the strict letter of the law, Jesus' mentality was that it was alright to deviate from the written law if it meant doing a greater good. EXAMPLE: In the Gospel According to John, a woman is going to be stoned for adultery. "Levitivus" 20:10 and "Deuteronomy" 22:22 clearly state death as the punishment for adultery. And Jesus of course told them anyone who was without sin could begin the execution: "...He that is without sin amongst you, let him first cast a stone at her" (John 8:7). (None of them could.) Paul even warns us about taking the Bible too literally in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians: "...the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life" (2nd Corinthians 3:6). While Bishop Spong explains that the differences between the 4 Gospels often frustrate people, he explains that it shouldn't. The reason is that the 4 Gospels were written for different audiences. Mark basically wrote his Gospel based on the teachings of Peter. Matthew wrote his Gospel in a way that compared Jesus to Moses. He was writing for the Jewish populations, and he wanted to emphasize that Christianity was the fulfillment of Judaism. Matthew also liked to dramatize things. Luke wrote in a memorable and beautiful way. His goal was to make peace with the Jews who became followers of Christ and the Gentiles who became followers of Christ. John's Gospel is on the hostile side. This is because at the time John wrote, many of the followers of Christ were being expelled from the Jewish places of worship. And John wrote in a hostile manner to show the early Christians that God would not be angry at them for leaving their former places of worship. All in all, this is a great book that belongs in the library of any Christian.
Lots of truth in this little book.......2006-07-23
Bishop Spong does a great job in this book leading the reader out of blind faith fundamentalism into a more educated and thoughtful truth. He discusses the impact the Apostle Paul had on the Christian Myth, how each of the 4 gospels was written for a a specific purpose and the the real origins of Easter and Christmas and how Chrisitianity was made to fit into them. This is one of the main books that finaly lead me out of 10 years of ignorant Christian Fundamentalism. I highly recommend reading this book if you would like to know the true value of the Bible with out the mythology.
