Tryin' to Sleep in the Bed You Made.......2007-08-09
Hooks the reader and keeps them captivated to the last chapter. The characters are multi-dimensional and the story is rich with detail about family, friendship and deceit. Plenty of twists and turns with a few jaw drops.
A must-read! You won't regret it.

Great book. I will be a fan of Deberry and Grant's for a long long time if they keep writing them like this.
Excellent.......2006-05-15
Words can not describe how good this book is. It keeps your attention from beginning to end. I could not put it down! The authors do a great job showing the consequences and benefits of one's actions. Gayle wanted what she wanted when she wanted and look how she ended up. Pat, on the other hand, took the time out to go to school and really prepare for her future and she turned out on top. The relationships in the book are so realistic and I can definitely relate. I would recommend this book to any true reader. EXCELLENT READ!!

Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author and "grand mistress of storytelling" (Romantic Times) Sabrina Jeffries comes the second seductive story in her School for Heiresses Series.
"You can't avoid him forever, Louisa. Just tell him you're not interested, and put an end to it."
-- Mrs. Charlotte Harris, headmistress
Marry? Never! It would end Louisa North's work with her ladies reform group -- and truth be told, she likes her independence very much, despite her royal father's protests. So when Simon Tremaine, the dashing Duke of Foxmoor whom she once loved -- and had exiled from England -- returns bent on marrying her, she's skeptical. Does he truly care for her, or does he simply want revenge? It's difficult to resist Simon's dangerous charms, because the fire between them still burns as hot as ever. But when his ulterior motive for marriage is exposed, along with the deeply buried secrets of his past, Louisa vows to make him pay . . . and the price will be his heart.
Customer Reviews:
Great Story, more serious than other "Heirssess Series" books.......2007-08-18
I have read all of the School for Heiresses Series to date, and I would have to say this is my least favorite of them all. Not to say I didn't like it, but I think the reason is that the characters lacked the witty banter of the other books. Louisa North, illegitimate daughter of the King, is head the London Ladies Society whose current goals involve prison reform for women as well as supporting Political candidates willing to support this reform. Her suitor, Simon, the Duke of Foxmore, has his own political agenda to be Prime Minister, which to gain the King's support involves the courting and "taming" of Louisa's political aspirations. All of these situations are quite serious as the treatment of women in prison during this time period was heart wrenching. Even Louisa's fear of marriage leading to child birth has its own horrific historical significance. While it was still an interesting story, it seemed an off-shoot of the otherwise fun and witty Heiresses series. I think it may help to read Sabrina Jefferies Royal Brotherhood series as these characters are tied into that. But I still recommend this book as the characters are very rich and full of depth, an excellent story and steamy romance.
Terrific As Always!.......2007-08-17
In the second book of Jeffries "School for Heiresses" the reader is re-introduced (TO PLEASURE A PRINCE part of Jeffries' "Royal Brotherhood" series) to Louisa North, illegitimate daughter of King George IV, as well as the man who'd broken her heart 7 years ago, Simon Tremaine, the new Duke of Foxmoor.
It's seven years later and Simon has returned from India where the king had banished him after Louisa discovered his affections towards her masked his aspirations for political gain. He's back and still politically ambitious but after his first sight of Louisa his passions are aroused even more so for the woman she's become. Summoned to an audience with the king, Simon is offered a deal he cannot refuse. If Simon can court and marry Louisa, who's been stirring up trouble as a member and founder of the London Ladies Society, the king would make it possible for Simon to achieve his greatest political desire - Prime Minister of England.
Louisa for all her new independence and charitable work for female prisoners; courting reformists to her cause; and secretly backing a candidate for the House of Commons; she was not totally immune to the attentions of the Duke of Foxmoor. Yes, Simon was a scoundrel for breaking her heart while using her for his ambitious political maneuvers, but his kiss still left her weak in the knees. While Simon knew it would only be a matter of time for him to bring her to the marriage bed, Louisa would be the one to finally bring him to his knees.
*** A long time fan of Sabrina Jeffries, I confess, I have not read a single book of hers I did not love! Bringing together a couple with bad history from an earlier story has been done before, but Jeffries brings them back with style incorporating sparkling dialogs and some very sensual trysts as they battle over both domestic and political issues.
Simon is a complex hero who isn't at all likeable when first introduced as he is shown bargaining with the king once again in an effort to reap political gain and rewards. If it weren't for having Raji, his pet monkey on his shoulder, I wouldn't have liked him at all. Little by little, he does become the hero when he starts to bend a bit while trying to worm his way into Louisa's good graces. As the author starts to weave in bits and pieces of Simon's tragic early youth of `training', beaten into him by his grandfather one starts see how he was molded into his attitude of political ambitions while making him stifle any and all feelings of passion. In some of his kind acts, used to break through Louisa's lack of trust, the reader begins to see bits and pieces of the man he could become if someone was brave enough to break through his defensive outer shell.
Having spent most of the last seven years in the royal court, Louisa had grown into an independent, accomplished woman after having her heart broken by Simon. She is intelligent and savvy, points very well defined by the author's excellent portrayal, and as such even though she knows Simon is not to be trusted, her heart is drawn as a moth to a flame. Willing to give him enough rope to hang himself, this more mature Louisa sees glimpses of the man she's always dreamed of and hopes he's become and gets caught in Simon's net, but was wise enough to demand concessions. Consequently she was devastated to discover once again his betrayal. Hurt beyond measure, Louisa would uncover truth's that motivated Simon, truth's that would set him free to live and love.
This truly was an engrossing story of redemption and sensual passion for Lousia and Simon - both wonderfully crafted and finally able to find the happiness they deserved. Not only does Jeffries titillate the reader with a passion filled romantic love story but she couples it with intricately woven human frailties making the characters leap off the pages into your hearts. I've said it before and I'll say it again Ms. Jeffries holds you from first page to the last with a perfect combination of wit, romance and intrigue.

The monkey stole the show!.......2007-06-13
The most interesting character in this novel, was the hero's pet monkey Rajii! That summarizes my view of this book. I'm glad I only borrowed it from the library.
Others have already summarized the plot so I will not rehash. I will say that the political backdrop was intriguing and very informative. The chemistry between the protagonists was lacking- of course when Simon could actually convince Louisa to let her guard down , it was steamy but their interactions as a couple lacked the spark I like in a romance.
I actually felt sorry for Simon for landing such a querolous wife.
I for one love the independanlt female, however I really think many heroines are not realistically rendered. I totally understand Louisa's devotion to her prison reform, and wanting a radical candidate and I understand Simon's balking at it- what I don't understand is why Louisa thinks this is abnormal from her husband, a DUKE with POLITICAL asperations.
There was also the scene where she got pelted by a rock (yes, a ROCK!) at the prison, however even though she got knocked out, she is adamant tonot have a doctor. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't mind independent heroines, I just dislike the borderline stupid ones.
didn't finish.......2007-06-07
I have read several of her other books and enjoyed them. I found myself having a few minutes to read, picking up the book, then doing something else. I wish that I had read the reviews before. Borrow the book if it appeals to you.
Needed something more.......2007-05-08
The hero and heroine of this book just never convinced me that they really loved each other. Since there was a lot of political machination going on between these two, they were always one upping the other when it came to advancing their own agendas. This was a tedious. I never understood how Simon, the hero, was so forgiving of Louisa. When she discovered that he was stringing her along in a courtship she had him sent to India for seven years. She was in no way compromised, they shared one kiss. This was glossed over and Simon said he deserved his banishment. This novel would have been more interesting if revenge had been part of the plot. Also, a deeper background into Simon's past in India would have fleshed out his charachter. He was one dimensional.
Louisa was stubborn but so was Simon. I really was tired of her reapeating to herself, "A pox on Simon, a pox on her husband."
Both were secretive but to the author's credit, they did not let misunderstandings go on throughout the entire novel. Once a secret was revealed, they discussed it and moved on. This book rates 2 ½ stars. The political backdrop with prison reform was fresh and inventive but the hero and heroine were not.

Book Description
As those who knew him will attest, Francophile and food writer Richard Olney was one of a kinda writerly cook who had a tremendous influence on American cooking via his well-worn cottage on a hillside in Provence. Born in the Midwest in 1927 and drawn to France at the tender age of twenty-four, Olney was unapologetically attracted to the style, flavors, and tastes of French cooking when most Americans were smitten by the wonders of the new prepared foods in their markets. With unrelenting passion and precision, Olney studied and explored the cuisine, carefully documenting all he had learned for future generations of chefs, cooks, and food lovers. His first of several landmark works, THE FRENCH MENU COOKBOOK was well ahead of its time with its authentic French recipes and then-unheard-of seasonal approach to cooking. Little did we know then that THE FRENCH MENU COOKBOOK would provide inspiration for Alice Waters and her compatriots as they built the groundwork for a culinary revolution in America. Brimming with the honest and enlightening explanations of how the French really cook and the 150-plus authentic recipes, this book is a masterful resource that is a must for every serious cook.

Not for the Novice.......2004-02-03
I'm a huge fan of Beth Hensperger's bread books, but I should note that I don't think anyone who is truly a novice baker would have an easy time with any of her books. I have found that the best approach to using her books is to "loosely" follow her recipes, while also making sure to follow basic bread common sense. Her typical missteps: Her recipes often call for way too much liquid, and she frequently underestimates kneading times. I don't know of anyone who can properly knead a whole-grain bread in 5 minutes! The recipes, if followed loosely, are indeed delicious. My favourite bread recipe ever is the Oatmeal bread that's contained in the "Winter" section. (It calls for maple syrup and oatmeal...I can't remember its exact name). Again, though, beware of the liquid measurements when making the recipe!
Nice pictures, but............2003-11-25
Not a book I can recommend. Though it is filled with nice photographs of bread with interesting-sounding flavors and combinations of ingredients, many of the recipes just don't work for one reason or another. Anyone seriously interested in baking should consider The Bread Baker's Apprentice by Peter Reinhart. This book also has great photos of interesting breads, and they all work flawlessly.
One of my favorite cookbooks!.......2003-01-11
... This book is a terrific addition to anyone's recipe collection. There is such a wide variety of recipes here, and each is unique and delicious. I love that the recipes are separated by season. This allows me to thumb through and find a light bread (summer, spring) or a heavy one (winter, fall), depending on what I'm looking for. Also, I must mention that this book was my very first attempt at baking bread ever -- and it went off without a hitch! I think Hensperger's book is a must have.
superb collection of recipes.......1999-10-22
One of the - initially - most unasuming bread baking recipe collections. Once I started to bake breads from this book, it was hard to try a new recipe, and not to repeat the old one: every single one was a clear favorite (for a week, until a new one appearred!). I have a nice collection of bread baking books , but this one holds a very special place. Superb, and so tasty!
A beautiful, readable, homage to bread.......1997-07-29
I got this book for my birthday and thought, "Oh, well, a cookbook for the coffee table." After a couple of weeks, however, I started to skim through it out of boredom. I could not put it down. The recipes themselves are enough to make this a book well worth having (although they are somewhat complicated and can be intimidating for the beginning bread baker) but the photographs are mouth-watering as well. And the text that accompanies each section of the book, both in the introductions to the seasons and the introductions to each recipe, are essays unto themselves, worthy of note. If the passing of the seasons has meaning for you, for whatever reason, and you like to bake or just eat bread, you NEED this cookbook

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful story and excellent art........2006-05-28
Delicious Seasons is expertly drawn, and the storyline is very well developed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
However, as many probably have noticed, the English is not first rate. I, myself, live in Shanghai China, and I read this first out of a magazine (somewhat similar to the US's Shounen Jump) and it was originally in Chinese. The dialogue in Chinese is perfectly fine, and only later did I read it the very first part of it in English. The English indeed is rather poor, which is slightly a shame.
I suppose that it can't be changed, but hopefully, readers can bear in mind that the artist is Chinese, not illiterate. ^^;;
As a side note, the girl's name is "chiu" which means autumn, and the "xiao" in front of it, pronounced "shiao", is a common part of Chinese culture, and it basically puts the word "little" in front of people's names. In English, it'd translate to "little chiu" or "little autumn", but xiao is not actually part of her name. As for Lei, I think Lei is his last name, but I'm not entirely sure about that. Xiao Chiu's little brother's name, "xiao xue" means "little snow".
I would recomend this to anyone who can bring themselves to look past the second-rate English and can enjoy the story and the art. ^_^
I spent $8.......2006-02-02
First off, I'd have to agree with the other reviewer-- the art is really good. But the writing is TERRIBLE.
The English is choppy and doesn't agree in number and gender; it would be safe to say it wasn't proofread and/or was written by someone whose native language was not English.
Sadly, that took away enough from the book. If I pick this small manga up again, it'll only be to look at some highly screen-toned pictures.
Excellent artwork and storyline!.......2004-05-31
First I must say, I LOVE how these characters are drawn! This is an addictive little story following an adorable aspiring chef and her attractive friends. Three recipes for non-vegetarian (blah!) dishes are incorporated into the story, courtesy of the main character's passion for cooking, and a classic two way love connection is in full swing with a hint of some third party yaoi for spice. School, relationships, making homemade soup... that's the gist of this first volume. By the way, when the male main character first appears, he looks just like a little Ryouki from Hot Gimmick!
Here is the description given on the back of the book:
"MANGA
ROMANCE/CAMPUS
Xiao Qiu, an ambitious college girl. Her two loves: Cooking + Lei, the cute guy in her class... Real recipes! Sweet romance!"
Book Description
In today's world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves.
Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now, in a book that can heal our harried lives, Wayne Muller, author of the spiritual classic
How, Then, Shall We Live?, shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal--a refuge for our souls.
We need not even schedule an entire day each week. Sabbath time can be a Sabbath afternoon, a Sabbath hour, a Sabbath walk. With wonderful stories, poems, and suggestions for practice, Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness.
Customer Reviews:
Sabbath.......2007-10-02
This is a fabulous book. It gave me new insight into why Sabbath (rest) time is so important. It fed me with information that motivated me to change a few things in my life. Wayne Muller is a wonderful author who is interesting and inspiring.
Nourishment for the human spirit, using rest to return to delight.......2006-09-03
This book arrived yesterday, and I stayed up late reading it last night and this morning. I could hardly put it down. Many of the thoughts hit me as so profound, that I had to pause to think before I could continue reading.
"In the relentless busyness of modern life, we have lost the rhythm between work and rest. All life requires a rhythm of rest." (p. 1) "When we live without listening to the timing of things -- when we live and work in twenty-four-hour shifts without rest -- we are on war time, mobilized for battle. Yes, we are strong and capable people, we can work without stopping, faster and faster, electric lights making artificial day so the whole machine can labor without ceasing. But remember: NO LIVING THING LIVES LIKE THIS." (p. 69)
The book highlights the benefits of rest for our spirit, our bodies, our relationships -- as well as gives reasons why people don't rest. We feel that more work is better, we are afraid of what we will hear in the silences if we pause, we think we have more to give if we toil on without rest (when the opposite is often true, that rest breaks leave us with more to contribute). The book is also full of simple stories of people who have found themselves after rest, and simple thought-provoking poems. Muller also devotes some thoughts to simple play; and yes, even adults should play.
This book left me thinking of all that being an adult professional can cost the human spirit. Some of my own happiest memories are of being a child, sprawled on the grass on a hot summer afternoon, and staring up at the white clouds against a blue sky and finding shapes in the clouds. When do we ever do this, as a modern society? Simply pause, and spend a day doing nothing but play and rest?
Muller gives us some strong reasons to pause, to resort our values, to treasure our relationships and our bodies and spirits, and to go out again with more to offer our world.
Not the TRUE meaning of the Sabbath.......2006-02-21
While this book gives practical examples of how to rest and find renewal by observing the Sabbath, it does not touch the true meaning of the Sabbath. As another reviewer mentioned, the value of this book was highly diminished for me when the author failed to emphasize the singly Judeo-Christian roots and values of the Sabbath. Instead, Muller takes a worldly approach to the psychology and therapy of observing the Sabbath and reflecting on life.
This is the third book on the Sabbath that I have read, and it has by far been the least enlightening on truly why God has called us to rest and keep the Sabbath holy. While Muller's tips are helpful, I found similar ideas in a better book, "Keeping the Sabbath Wholly" by Marva Dawn (and she still preserved the deep & holy meaning of the Sabbath).
Instead of Muller's book, I would highly recommend reading "Keeping the Sabbath Wholly" by Marva J. Dawn.
Slow Down.......2005-11-22
This book is a exploration into the concept of "Sabbath" and its importance in world religions. Muller describes Sabbath rituals in the Jewish faith and discusses scriptural references to the Sabbath (from Christian and Buddhist, as well as Jewish texts), especially those concerning why it is celebrated at all. He argues that we all need time set aside as a Sabbath for rest, happiness, and consecration. He embellishes the text with poems and stories about the Sabbath practices of friends. Many of the chapters close with a "Practice" section, in which Muller describes actions you can take to put the ideas from the chapter into practice.
In an early chapter, Muller declares that all religions have some form of Sabbath. This didn't quite sound correct to me-while Muslims often gather in a mosque together for Friday noon prayers, the day is otherwise unlike a Judeo-Christian Sabbath, since there is no feeling that worshipers should refrain from work or commerce on that day. And Buddhists and Hindus certainly don't have a regular day set aside each week for religious observance and rest. But Muller goes on to explain that he is taking the term "Sabbath" to mean a time set aside from ordinary worldly pursuits, and that in a more general sense "Sabbath" need not refer to an entire day, but could be just a few minutes in which the mind is engaged in meditation, prayer or devotion. By this measure, the five daily Muslim prayers, Buddhist meditation, and Hindu pujas would all qualify as Sabbath time. Muller argues that such time is necessary to appreciate fully our capabilities as caring people.
Reading this book has opened my eyes to new ways of celebrating the Sabbath. Muller argues that the most vital activity to engage in on the Sabbath is not necessarily attending church, but rather, pausing all ordinary activities to contemplate the Divine or Life itself. He notes that feeding, dressing, and escorting family members to a church service, then struggling to keep them quiet during the service is not necessarily in keeping with the intention of rest and meditation. And he describes ministers who, since they must work on Sundays, keep their own Sabbath on a different day of the week. He explains how important it is to have time alone, when one doesn't need to provide or others or even interact with them, so that one can better concentrate on devotional matters. Regardless of your faith, practicing the ideas described in this book can you help form a much stronger connection to the center of your being.
The goal of life is not to go faster!!!!.......2005-08-31
I really really liked his thoughts on the Sabbath and caused me to put this day into perspective for my life. Simply well written and thought out. A life changing book.
