Janey Wilcox is an M.A.W. (that's Model/Actress/Whatever to the uninitiated). The problem with Janey, the protagonist of Candace Bushnell's first novel, Trading Up, is not the M or the A part. It's the W. Here is a rare alphabetical anomaly: In Janey's case, W stands for "prostitute." Oh, Janey never crosses the line into actual hookerdom, but she does sleep with extremely wealthy men in the hopes they'll improve her status, her financial situation, or her lifestyle. When we first met Janey in Bushnell's novella collection 4 Blondes, she was up to her usual tricks (so to speak)--scamming a guy for a Hamptons vacation rental. At the opening of Trading Up, her fortunes have improved. She's now the star of a Victoria's Secret ad campaign, and as such she's found access to undreamed-of echelons of New York society. She makes friends with Mimi Kilroy, a senator's daughter "at the very top of the social heap in New York." She gets invited to all the best parties. And she finally finds a wealthy man who will actually marry her: Seldon Rose, a powerful entertainment industry executive. Of course, Janey's social ambitions are not stoppered by her marriage to Seldon, and the clash between her expectations (more parties!) and his (normal life) send Janey into a tailspin that leads to heartbreak. Bushnell is clearly trying to channel Edith Wharton (The Custom of the Country is even invoked by Janey as a screenplay idea), but ends up sounding a lot more like a cross between Tama Janowitz and Judith Krantz. This is a novel about shopping and sex, and while it's fizzy enough, it's not Cristal. --Claire Dederer

Download Description
The heroine of the story is Janey Wilcox, who was first introduced to readers by Candace in one of the four stories that comprise her bestselling FOUR BLONDES. But this first novel by the iconic author of SEX AND THE CITY is a stand alone novel - you don't need to have read FOUR BLONDES to read this smart, entertaining, incisive and altogether satisfying novel. Janey Wilcox has been a celebrity wannabe for much of her young life, and when we meet her in TRADING UP she has at last achieved many of her goals. She has made it big as a model for Victoria's Secret and has therefore become famous; she has at last been able to buy the car of her dreams; and has even been able to buy her own house in NY's exclusive Hamptons, which means she no longer has to choose boyfriends on the basis of who owns a Hamptons house she can summer in. While Janey has realized many of her ambitions, she hasn't yet realized all of them. She has yet to be taken seriously as an actress, and she hasn't found the man of her dreams. But that second thing, at least, is about to change. In one of the early scenes in the novel, Janey finally gets invited to the most exclusive of all Hampton parties, which means, at least to her, that she has really made it. There, she runs into some of Hollywood's leading personalities, into the creme de la creme of NY society, and also into some people from her past she'd rather not have seen again. However, in the course of the party, she is introduced to and is charmed - captivated - by a handsome, successful man who soon thereafter becomes her boyfriend. But Janey's lilfe will never be simple, both because of who she is and also because of her past somewhat not always good girlish behavior, therefore it's not long before Janey's great new life begins to fray a bit at the edges.

Devastatingly Horrible .......2007-09-19
This book is by far the worst thing I have ever read in my life. I always finish a book even if it's not so good, but I couldn't even force myself to finish this one. It is so boring and poorly written that it's not even funny. I don't think there was one character in this book that I actually liked, not one of them had any redeeming qualities about themselves. I had high hopes since I enjoyed 4 Blondes, but Trading Up fell flat. If I could have given it negative stars, I would have.
Eh.......2007-09-17
Just not what I expected after being a loyal viewer of Sex and the City. Maybe a large part of the credit for SATC goes to the *other* writers, the script writers?
Like other readers, I struggled to make it through to the end, mainly to see if it would get better and deliver in the end. But sadly, it did not! Luckily, I got this from the $4.98 clearance shelf at Borders. Same with Lipstick Jungle. I don't have high hopes for it, but it's being made into a sitcom now with Brooke Shields so I'm giving it a shot. Stay tuned.
But Trading Up, blegh. And I really wanted to like it! It's not as though you expect these charecters to develop a conscience or learn any moral lessons. Their shallowness are part of the entertainment, it's just that it wasn't even very entertaining, at all!! Infuriating when it wasn't depressing or simply boring. Save yourself some time and give this one a miss.
Lifestyles of the Rich and Wannabes.......2007-03-27
Very light fluff. A primer for the aspiring Paris, Linday, Anna Nicole, Tara and wannabes-in-the-making.
A Fun Read.......2007-01-23
Yea, you might not want the characters has your friends... the book is still extremely entertaining. The author does a great job with sights and sounds and you can picture being there. A real page turner. Recommended for fun... not to be taken seriously... that's why it's fiction.
My "fix" for Sex and the City.......2007-01-14
Since Sex and the City ended on HBO, I've been searching for a "fix" and I've found it. "Trading Up" rocks! I'm into Book Two of it already and I can't put it down. I don't think ALL the characters are shallow - I do see the "good" in certain main characters....but everyone has a bad side, a side that causes one to do what's needed in order to obtain dreams and that, I believe, is what makes some of Bushnell's characters "appear" shallow.
I work in an industry where everyone uses each other in order to obtain what they wish so I really relate to these characters. Deep down, they have a "good side".
This book is fast paced, never dull (so far) and a definite "fix" for those who miss Sex and the City as much as I.
I can't wait to read Lipstick Jungle after this!
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
One unforgettable night, Sebastian, the Duke of St. Ives, stole a kiss from a beautiful young woman at a French convent. They didn't share their names but neither of them ever forgot the magic of that innocent kiss, and when they meet again in London seven years later, each instantly recognizes the other. Helena, the Comtesse d'Lisle, is searching for a manageable husband to thwart her controlling guardian, and Sebastian, a London rake who has sworn never to wed, is clearly not an appropriately biddable candidate. The lovely French comtesse is the one woman who can change Sebastian's view of marriage, but convincing Helena is a task that challenges even the powerful Duke of St. Ives. While Sebastian is courting and seducing the reluctantly tempted Helena, her powerful guardian sets in motion a scheme that threatens the happiness of the lovers and endangers their lives.
In this tale of the passionate couple that parented the unforgettable Bar Cynster siblings, author Stephanie Laurens pulls out all the stops with high adventure, dueling swords, intrigue, and sensual romance. Rounding out the novel with witty dialogue, great secondary characters, and detailed descriptions of the London society scene of 1783, Laurens gives readers another Cynster novel they're sure to love. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
When a handsome man literally fell at her feet while she was walking through a moonlit convent courtyard, Helena knew he must have been there for a scandalous liaison. Yet she kept his presence a secret from the questioning nuns –– and for her silence the stranger rewarded her with an enticing, unforgettable kiss. What Helena didn't know was that her wild Englishman was Sebastian Cynster, Duke of St. Ives ... and that this dashing, dangerous nobleman was her destiny.
Seven years later, Sebastian spies Helena from across a crowded ballroom. This heiress is dazzling London society with her wit and beauty, tantalizing all the eligible men with the prospect of taking her hand in marriage. But Helena is not looking for just any husband. She wants an equal, a challenge –– someone who can live up to the promise of that delicious, never–forgotten kiss.

Rather Disappointing...........2007-03-21
Considering how much I had enjoyed reading the original 5 Cynster Series, this much-looked-forward-to pre-quel was rather disappointing....
It's a good book...if not for the hero's future infamy.......2007-01-31
Written in Laurens's typical style (packed with incomplete sentences, overly significant glances and tiny gestures, and domineering men), "Promise" is best read as a stand-alone novel, without its association with earlier stories in the Cynster series; if you don't have prior knowledge of the unhappiness and infidelity to which Sebastian & Helena are doomed, you'll probably enjoy the standard happily-ever-after plot.
What a great story! .......2007-01-10
I have liked Stephanie Laurens for a long time, especially her Cynster series, and this was just a great way to start it all off. I loved the strong hero, and the feisty heroine. An amazing beginning to a fantastic series!
Where it all began.......2006-11-11
This book show us the old characters of the bar cynster novels. Sebastian's even worse than the cousins, because all of the ton knows it. You get to see why Helena is the way she is, and the greatest thing is Lady Osbaldestone, she hasn't changed a bit!!! although it would have been great to hear about sebastian's brothers' stories.
This one delivers!!.......2006-11-07
Late 1700's France and England
I very much enjoyed the story of Sebastian and Helena in THE PROMIS IN A KISS. I agree with others that it's somewhat disappointing to know beforehand that Sebastian eventually breaks his vow to Helena and produces illegitimate son Scandal. I guess if Helena can forgive Sebastian, I can too! HA

Well written the book that every girl should read. .......2006-11-04
This book first caught my attention by the title. I thought it sounded sweet and romantic. I was right. This is the kind of book that I have been looking for. Sherrie Lord has a way of writting an amazing story that deals with real world issues. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
I thought romance was dead.......2000-06-22
Before reading this book, I thought romance was just another way of saying boring. After reading the book, I have to say that I am very impressed with the storyline and the realism of the characters. Keep up the good work.
Can't put it down.......1999-11-21
This was a very romantic and touching book. The fact that it has a Christian perspective made the book even more delightful. I had never read a book by Sherrie Lord but since reading this, I look forward to reading more of her work. The book was not slow at all and in fact, I was up til 4am finishing it because I couldn't put it down.
Forgiveness & love are worth risking ones heart for........1999-11-20
Sonya and 'Noble' know God and His love and forgiveness on different levels. Through a heart wrenching set of events they find love and trust for each other and God on their way to Sante Fe. It was romantic, sad, and breath taking. I loved it. When is Sherrie Lord's next book? She's great at getting real life situations that are gritty, funny and romantic and having God revealed in each persons life!

A Great Unkown Book.......2004-07-22
I have never heard of this book but I read the Princess of Pop by Cathy Hopkins and it was really good book. I am a very tough critic (so says my friend) and this series is great. I want to read the Mates Dates and Inflatable Bras and they sound really good. My friend is in the middle of reading the first book of that seires and she likes it a lot so far. If you are looking for an intresting girly teen book then this is the one. Cathy Hopkins books are some of my favorite books. I really have no idea what I am typing but it is a good book. (...)

Book Description
In the explosive conclusion to the Dark Nest trilogy, Luke Skywalker summons the heroes of the New Jedi Order from near and far, as the Star Wars galaxy teeters on the edge of eternal war. Yet even the combined powers of the formidable Jedi may not be enough to vanquish the deadly perils confronting them.
The Chiss-Killik border war is threatening to engulf the entire galaxy and raising the awful specter of Killiks sweeping across space to absorb all living creatures into a single hive mind. The only hope for peace lies with the Jedi–and only if they can not only end the bloodshed between two fierce enemies but also combat the insidious evil spread by the elusive Dark Nest and its unseen queen.
Leia’s newly acquired Jedi skills will be put to the ultimate test in the coming life-and-death battle. As for Luke, he will have to prove, in a lightning display of Force strength and swordplay, that he is– beyond a shadow of a doubt–the greatest Jedi Master in the galaxy.

Just Awful.......2007-01-17
This series has to be the worst since The Jedi Academy Trilogy. Totally destroyed Jainas character. She is the Sword of the Jedi and Denning turns her into a punk joiner. Come on, wheres the continuity in that. Plus, a trilogy about bugs.Boring!!! Especially after something as ambitious as the NJO story arc. Lomi Plo and Raynar Thul should have stayed dead. hopefully LOTF will be better.
It's no "Tatooine Ghost".......2006-12-11
I may be a bit biased in this, but plotwise this entire series was about the same caliber as the notorious "Starship Troopers". Bug-stories are often like that and this one was no different. Further, the trio of Dark Jedi from the Myrkr mission during the Vong War were better kept dead as they had nothing interesting to offer to the SW EU. After a whole trilogy, I realized that they still don't =P. By the end of the first book, I had lost all sympathy for the main characters (the Kilik sympathetic band of Jedi) and cannot for the life of me figure out their motivations in light of their established personalities upto this point in the EU. In other words, Denning has written about well-established characters such as Jaina and Tahiri and even Jag Fel (who gets an insultingly short mention) as if they were fresh new characters that he can mold any way he wants to. I did NOT appreciate the meaningless and unnecessary loss of continuity in the characters because of this. Luckily, Aaron Allston rectifies this gross oversight in the first of the Legacy of the Force series where the characters "come back to normal" =P. Pity. I really like "Tatooine Ghost". Perhaps, Denning's next book will be more to his standards than this entire trilogy was :(
dark nest iii : the swarm war.......2006-08-11
the nests, still under the sway of the dark nest, continue to spread their influence throughout the galaxy, the jedi order continues to splinter and the chiss and alliance forces continue to push for war. the awesome foursome (luke, leia, mara and han) continue, against numerous adversaries, to push for a peaceful resolution, which it seems will only be acheived after much bloodshed.
this book is a fair conclusion to the 'dark nest' trilogy. the mysteries founded in the first installments are neatly explained, obstinate allies are forced to accept their differences and the jedi manage to stay a force to be reckoned with. yet all the jedi seem to have developed the arrogance of the young ones, with their decisions at times being nothing more but ridiculous. thankfully, that wonderful duo of jae and tarfang remain to add light when it is needed, and the galaxy is left in a comforting relative peace - but with just a hint of what may be in store for (especially) this 'new jedi order'.
great book only one complaint.......2006-08-06
since dark nest one lowie and tahiri were left out even in dark nest one they did not play key roles lowie was left in a cell the whoole book ,left out in the NJO series too, lowie was not mentioned much i seriously would like a book were there was a lowie luke team up because that would be so cool i am a true fan of lowie and chewie even though he died.
A dramatic uniformity to the Star Wars listening experience.......2006-04-14
Troy Denning's THE SWARM WAR: DARK NEST III receives Jonathan Davis' fine voice also, lending a satisfying, dramatic uniformity to the Star Wars listening experience overall. Here a border war threatens to engulf the galaxy, unless the Jedi can end bloodshed and combat the evil spread by the Dark Nest and its hidden queen. Leia's new Jedi skills will be the difference between life and death in this confrontation.

The swarm.......2006-09-10
I like how the main characters in the galaxy of fear series are always interacting with other more famous characters from the starwars universe. This book is no different. In this story they encounter one of my Favorite charcters, Grand admiral thrawn. At this point in the story, he is going by the title of captin thrawn. I really got into this book. The way the author described the story, painted a picture in my mind so vivid. I had to stop and scracth my head and make sure there weren't any bugs crawling on me.
Star Wars Galaxy of fear The swarm.......2002-08-28
I think that this book would be about 2 kids that fight giant bugs. Yes,the book was what I Expected It to be. I still feel the same about this book. Nothing about this book has changed.
Thi9s book is about these kids who go to this planet called
''Sk'rrr'' and one of the kids accidently kills a bug. The main characters are:Zak,Tash, and Hoole. The setting is at the Sikadian
Garden. The Book was actually about 3 kids that go to a planet called''sk'rrr''and one of them kills a shreev and it upsets the swarm of bugs. This book is Fiction. The author is John Whitman.
I like this book because it has fighting in the book and it
has adventure striving in it. I would rate this book 4 stars. The
headline for this book is:The Sikadian Garden on Sk'rrr has many
beautiful plants and flowers.

Galazy of Fear - The Swarm.......2002-03-22
I usually steer clear of kid's books, but my sister had and I only read this book because it had Grand Admiral Thrawn in it. It wasn't bad, for a kid's book, pretty interesting in some parts. I felt Thrawn should have gotten a better role in the book. Other than that, it's pretty good.

Reviewer A.......2007-08-29
This book is a great investment for anyone who is interested in learning more about soul retrieval so that they are well informed before finding a practitioner for a soul retrieval. She emphasizes repeatedly that her book shouldn't be used to find information on do it yourself'ers and it isn't presented that way. It is easy to read and very informative.
Changed my life........2007-08-03
When I had a soul retrieval it changed my whole life. Sandra Ingerman is THE teacher on how to perform soul retrievals and an excellent one at that. She is a grounded, down to earth and a compassionate, committed leader in the Core Shamanic community.
Great Book.......2007-02-13
This is a great book with some very interesting concepts in it. I found a local practitioner from the authors website and had a great experience with him. I would definitely encourage anyone who is not feeling whole to give both the book and the authors website a try.
A Classic In My Library.......2007-01-30
How do I begin a review of the one book out of thousands that I have read, that marked the most dramatic healing journey of my life? Until this book whispered to me from the second shelf in a holistic center in Huntington back in the early '90s, I had done a virtual sleep-walk through my days. I had even remarked to a friend that up until that point, my whole life had been a near-death experience.
I was working in the book department of Body, Mind & Soul holistic center on Route 110, and had begun studying shamanism with a local teacher, after a series of mystical experiences that had left me terrified and shaking. I needed training, that was sure, because I needed to understand this path I was being called to. And I also needed healing; I needed to have my soul parts returned to me.
When I opened this book to the checklist of soul loss symptoms, I saw every reason that I had always felt so lost and frightened, and at the same time somehow deadened inside. There had been long periods of time wherein colors were so dull they had almost appeared grey-black. There were periods of my childhood I had blocked out entirely.
At this time I was being trained to do shamanic journeying, and one night I was guided to retrieve my own soul. I actually had to check with a shaman who I was later to work with, to understand what this intense experience had been about. She confirmed what I already knew in my heart.
Later that year, I went to her to have 3 more parts returned to me.
Reading this book by Sandra Ingerman helped me to realize that gathering my soul was the necessary path I would begin to take, and that I would continue until I had achieved wholeness. This book was invaluable on the brave journey I needed to begin; there was no paradigm in my world up to this point for what I was about to embark upon, I knew I would just have to trust that I had been led to the right place, the right book, the right teachers.
The book is simple, straightforward, and the poetry is lovely. If you pick up a copy of this book, and know in your heart that it is time to reclaim your soul, please find a trustworthy healer, and begin your journey to wholeness. But do read this book first, so you will know what to expect, and what to look forward to.
The experiences I had following my own soul retrievals became the focus of my own recently published book. My goal was to bring you with me on the journey, so you would know you are never alone on your own path. From all the wonderful feedback I have received so far, I know in my heart that I achieved what I set out to do.
I cannot thank Sandra Ingerman enough for this precious book that helped me to achieve a richer, more vibrant, and amazingly magical life. The gifts that are waiting for you are even better than you can imagine.
From my Heart,

Important Life-Saving Work!.......2006-12-16
Sandra Ingerman is an impeccable practitioner and teacher who very clearly describes in this book the life-saving technique of soul retrieval. Personally, this work saved my life. When I read this book I was suffering from CFIDS and fibromyalgia. This book and the subsequent training helped me fill with life force energy and become a whole, vibrant human being again. Enough so, that I resumed my counseling and healing practice with vigor and authored two books on self-healing. I couldn't have done this without Ms. Ingerman's Soul Retrieval book. As a Licensed Professional Counselor for over 25 years I know through experience that talk therapy only goes so far. There is a spiritual and an energetic component to our woundings, and therefore our healing, that must be addressed for complete healing to occur. Soul Retrieval is my "healing bible" and I use this technique everyday in my practice to help people become whole and reclaim their life. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in having soul retrieval work done, and for those interested in becoming a shamanic practitioner.
