Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Four residents of Willow Creek, California--the youngest in her twenties, the oldest in her late fifties--become acquainted during a journaling class and decide to continue their connection by meeting each Thursday morning for coffee and conversation. They come from very different backgrounds, but their need for friends and support draw them together and bind them in their struggles with life and love. Clare is angry and bitter after a devastating divorce; Elizabeth, a widow, is determined not to waste a moment of the rest of her life; twentysomething Karen is set on becoming an actress despite her family's disapproval; and Julia is approaching her fortieth birthday when an unplanned pregnancy turns her perfect life upside down. As each of the four women cope with cataclysmic upheavals in their lives, they rely more and more on the support of the members of the Thursday morning breakfast club. And as they are faced with difficult choices, each chooses the option dictated by their conscience and their personal moral compass rather than the easy way out.
Thursdays at Eight is a novel of everyday women confronted with extraordinary circumstances, and Macomber tells their stories with a depth of mature insight that is both compassionate and unfailingly honest. These are women with guts and fortitude, courage and determination, and readers will recognize the same strength of character found in the novels of venerable authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
Every Thursday at eight, four women meet for breakfast -- and to talk. To tell their stories, recount their sorrows and their joys. To offer each other encouragement and unstinting support.
Clare has just been through a devastating divorce. She's driven by anger and revenge . . . until she learns something about her ex-husband that forces her to look deep inside for the forgiveness and compassion she's rejected -- and for the person she used to be.
Elizabeth is widowed, in her late fifties, a successful professional -- a woman who's determined not to waste another second of her life. And if that life should include romantic possibilities -- well, why not?
Karen is in her twenties, the years for taking risks, testing your dreams. Her dream is to be an actor. So what if her parents think she should be more like her sister, the very respectable Victoria?
Julia is turning forty this year. Her husband's career is established, her kids are finally in their teens and she's just started her own business. Everything's going according to plan -- until she gets pregnant!

Friends validating friends!.......2007-02-06
Thursdays at Eight is an excellent friendship book. The four main characters each have varying issues to contend with in their individual lives.
At age forty, Julia's life is flowing smoothly for her and her family until she shockingly finds out she is pregnant. How will she handle this surprising twist of fate?
Elizabeth is a widow who is determined to live her life to the fullest. Is romance in bloom for her or will she continue to be totally driven by her career?
Clare is extremely angry after her recent divorce until she discovers a painful truth about her ex-husband. How will she handle this unexpected news?
Karen, the youngest member of the group, dreams of becoming an actress. However, her parents would prefer her to be more settled like her sister, Victoria. Which path will she ultimately choose?
Indeed, each character grows due to the triumphant strength and support of their friends. I found this book to be a calming, peaceful, and fulfilling read. I highly recommend it to anyone who desires to witness the changes that these four powerful women are able to successfully endure. They transformed before my very eyes.
Good Read!.......2006-08-15
Great story line. Four (4) great stories about 4 woman and life challenges. Debbie is an excellent author whose stories reach out to you in a way that will force you to continue purchasing her books.
Very enjoyable book.......2006-08-01
I really enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to continuing it each day while riding to and from work. It was so good that I quickly loaned it to my friend who also enjoys reading books by Debbie Macomber.
Novel celebrating friendship.......2006-06-12
This is a wonderful story of 4 women who meet in a journaling class and become very good friends. Each of them chooses a word that illustrates the situation they're in or how they view themselves. As I also see the benefits of keeping a journal and also understand how important and beneficial good friendships can be, I really enjoyed this book.
How wonderful!.......2004-11-15
What wonderful friendships these four have formed! They are very lucky. Although predictable, I did really enjoy this book. The characters were very easy to like. I did wonder if this book had a proofreader because I found two typos.
These four ladies develop a warm bond that you will long to be a part of!

Book Description
Meet the Bedwyns—six brothers and sisters—men and women of passion and privilege, daring and sensuality.
Enter their dazzling world of high society and breathtaking seduction…where each will seek love, fight temptation, and court scandal…and where Morgan Bedwyn, the willful youngest daughter, discovers that true love is a temptation no woman can—or should—resist.
Young. Ravishing. Exquisitely marriageable. From the moment he spies Lady Morgan Bedwyn across the glittering ballroom, Gervase Ashford, Earl of Rosthorn, knows he has found the perfect instrument of his revenge. But wedlock is not on the mind of the continent’s most notorious rake. Nor is it of interest to the fiercely independent Lady Morgan herself…until one night of shocking intimacy erupts in a scandal that could make Gervase’s vengeance all the sweeter. There is only one thing standing in his way: Morgan, who has achieved the impossible—she’s melted his coolly guarded heart. For Gervase, only the marriage bed will do, but Morgan simply will not have him. Thus begins a sizzling courtship where two wary hearts are about to be undone by the most scandalous passion of all: glorious, all-consuming love.

What's a fake marriage...or two...or three..........2007-06-16
I won't bother repeating myself too much. Much of what I've said about Balogh's other books in this series can be said for Slightly Tempted. It wasn't bad or great, and there were a number of things that annoyed me.
When yet ANOTHER fake betrothal became part of the story, I literally wanted to bang my head heavily into a wall. This was the third one of the series (not including Aidan's in-name-only marriage of convenience). It's a nice story hook, but really, how many times can you use it in one series? Three is by far too many. Where is Balogh's originality? Even the other repetitions that I mentioned in the last review persisted. It's rather tedious.
Aside from all that, the book was decent enough. I like Morgan and Gervase. And the mystery surround why Gervase was banished from his home added some depth to what could have been a dull plot. Then there was Alleyne's part in the story. That definitely made things more interesting. If it hadn't been for the fake betrothal, I probably would have liked the book more. But all in all, it was a likable enough book.
Nice..........2007-05-01
This book is pretty good. I mean I like the hott tension between Gervase and Morgan. But it just was alright for me. Gervase is a nice guy i really like him and I like Morgan too. I don't like the big age difference though. But hey love is love. This wasn't one of my favorite Slightly series.
Another excellent Bedwyn family Regency.......2007-02-06
Mary Balogh's "Slightly" series have been variable in quality. I was rather disappointed with "Slightly Married" (Aidan), "Slightly Wicked" (Rannulf) and "Slightly Sinful" (Alleyne) but thought that "Slightly Scandalous" (Freyja) and "Slightly Dangerous" (Wulfric) were excellent. "Slightly Tempted" is the last of the Bedwyn series that I have read, although chronologically it's book 4 of the 6 (although "Sinful", Alleyne's story, occurs at the same time), and it was a really good read.
"Slightly Tempted" is the story of the youngest of the Bedwyns, daughter Morgan, who is 18 and in her first season. The events take place around the battle of Waterloo and Morgan is in Brussels with her brother Alleyne and a family who are looking after her. She meets Gervase Ashford, Earl of Rosthorne, at a ball and enjoys her conversation with him. Rosthorne's personality seems rather similar to that of Joshua, Marquess of Hallmere in "Slightly Scandalous" - he's fun, witty, a rake (of course!) and yet there are deeper things going on in his character. He was banished from England 9 years before after apparently ravishing a lady neighbour who was about to be betrothed to Wulfric, Duke of Bewcastle and Morgan's brother. Rosthorne feels distinctly uncharitable towards Wulfric and when he discovers Wulfric's sister is in Brussels he resolves to get some revenge on her brother by leading her into some indiscretions.
Of course his plan goes a little awry when he discovers there is more to Morgan than just being a lightweight debutante - they spend a lot of time together and his motives in spending time with her change significantly. However, when returning to England and the talk of society Morgan discovers his past and believes that all his behaviour was designed to hurt her brother Wulfric. How can Rosthorne prove his love is genuine, that he isn't guilty of the horrible event nine years before, and how can her persuade Morgan to marry him when she doesn't trust him?
This book has more historical detail than a lot of Mary Balogh's other works - the setting of the Battle of Waterloo (also shared with "Slightly Sinful") is very well described. I loved the way in which Morgan mucked in with people to help treat the injured and wounded and the descriptions of the final ball before the war were very good. There are also, for those who've read "Slightly Sinful", several events that coincide and the ending of this book introduces a significant event which we read about fully in "Slightly Sinful".
The main character of Morgan is interesting - she's young, brash, doesn't seem to mind too much about public opinion and sometimes seems rather uncaring about her chaperones and companions. On the other hand she's shown as truly caring for the injured after Waterloo and she works to effect forgiveness between Rosthorne and those who wronged him nine years ago. Rosthorne himself is well written although, as I mentioned above, he seems rather like Joshua Moore, Marquess of Hallmere, who also seemed rather like Kit Butler in "A Summer To Remember". Is Mary Balogh running out of types of male character?
The pacing in this book is really good, as are the descriptions of locations in both Brussels and Kent. The Bedwyn family are all over this book of course, and almost every reference to Wulfric seems to involve his quizzing glass (annoying) but in this book I didn't mind the Bedwyn references, although in some others they have been too much.
If you enjoyed the other "Slightly" books then you'll enjoy this one as it's one of the better ones.
Great addition to the series.......2006-07-06
This book is a great addition to the Bedwyn Series, each book is very different and does not have the same plot as some series can lean toward. A great read!!
Typical Mary Balough Romance.......2006-05-24
I find her writing so compelling until the end of the book nears. There is never a dramatic climax to the story. The characters simply decide they love one another, get married, and have a baby. I am a sucker for high drama and this ending disappointed me.
I liked Gervase and thought the relationship with Morgan was believable and touching. However, as I already stated, I felt the ending was dull and not at all emotionally exciting.

For anyone that likes role playing games OR is a writer!.......1999-11-29
This book is one of those few that really captures the imagination, and one of my favorites from the age of 14 through college. There are two ongoing scenes, one with the "real world" people playing a medieval role-playing-game, and the other focuses on what goes on with their characters in Gamearth... When one of the real-life gameplayers decides to destroy Gamearth, the characters have to act independently to escape the game-world and come into the real one, proving that their land is alive and more than just figments of the players' imaginations. You get to see both the side of the real-world reacting to the characters refusing to do what they are told AND the characters' points of view as a roll of the die brings chaos to their land. Perfect for anyone trying to write stories or playing RPGs, as it brings into question the idea that our "imaginary" world might be more than something we just dream up that goes away when we close the book or stop the game!
Book Description
Pope Benedict XVI offers us a great Lenten blessing in Journey to Easter. This book is rich meditation on the meaning of Lent, the significance of the birth and death of Jesus Christ, and the meaning of Jesus in the life of Christians everywhere.

Journey To Easter.......2007-03-11
Excellent book to help deepen our faith as we journey through the Lenten Season to the beautiful Easter Celebrations.
To the heart of the matter.......2007-03-09
I found this book deeply inspiring. Pope Benedict is able to convey the most profound truths with extreme clarity and simplicity. His reflections lead the reader to encounter the Person of Christ, to discover Him and eventually to be willing to embrace the challenging invitation to follow Him on the way of true Love and Life. I loved it! I suggest it to anyone!
Reflections on Experiences with Christ.......2006-03-28
This is adapted from http://eagleandelephant.blogspot.com/2006/03/jews-and-eucharist-cardinal-ratzinger.html
This book is a re-publication of the earlier book Journey towards Easter, a collection of retreat talks then-Cardinal Ratzinger gave in the Vatican in the presence of Pope John Paul II during the Lenten season of 1983.
All the chapters are worth reading, but one stands out, especially during this time (Lent) of the liturgical year. "Chapter 4: The Paschal Mystery." It is divided into four sections:
1. Holy Thursday
2. The Washing of the Feet
3. The Connection between the Last Supper, the Cross and the Resurrection
4. Risen on the Third Day.
There are some powerful and prevocative thoughts here. Discussing the relation and root of the Songs of the Servant of God to understanding Jesus' death, Ratzinger writes:
"He made of his death an act of prayer, an act of adoration. ... [H]e cried 'with a loud voice' the opening words of Psalm 21, the great Psalm of the just man suffering and set free: 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'
"... [T]his dying cry of Jesus was the messianic prayer of the great Psalm of Israel's suffering and hope, which concludes with the vision of the poor satisfied and all the ends of the earth returning to the Lord. ... [T]he whole story of the passion is shot through with the threads of this Psalm, weaving in and out continually in an interchange between words and reality. ... It thus becomes clear that Jesus is the true subject of this Psalm ....
"... [W]hat took place at the Last Supper is an anticipation of the death, the transformation of the death into an act of love. ...
"The death without the Supper would be empty, without meaning; the Supper without the actual realisation of the death it anticipated would be a gesture without reality. Supper and Cross together ... The Eucharist does not spring from the Supper alone; it springs from this oneness of Supper and Cross ....
"Therefore the Eucharist is not simply Supper .... The Eucharist is the presence of Christ's Sacrifice, ... it is Christ distributing himself under the figure of bread and wine.
"... 'given for you', 'poured our for many for the remission of sins'. These words are found in the Songs of the Servant of God handed down to us in the book of the prophet Isaiah. These Songs presuppose the exilic period: Israel no longer has its Temple, the only legitimate place in which to adore God. So it seems exiled from God also--forlorn in the desert. No longer can sacrifices or expiation and praise be offered. The inevitable question arises: how can there now exist any relationship with God, on which depends the salvation of the people and of the world? In this passion, in this suffering of a life lived away from their homeland, a life far from their own culture, Israel underwent a new experience: the solemn praises of God could no longer be celebrated. The only possibility for drawing near to God was suffering for God. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Prophets understood that the suffering of believing Israel was the true sacrifice, the new liturgy, and that in this true litrugy Israel represented the world before the face of God. ... The hope found in their passion was that the suffering people were an anticipation of the true servant of God, and so, as 'sacramentum futuri' [a sacrament of things to come] , shared in his grace. By applying to the Last Supper these words about the Servant of God, Jesus says: I am this Servant of God. My passion and death are that definitive liturgy, that glorification of God which is the light and salvation of the world."
Here is where one experiences the preceding as a crescendo of sorts as Ratzinger builds up to then deliver the powerful and--to some or perhaps even to many--provacative lines about the people of Israel and their relation to the sacrifice of Christ in the Eucharist:
"Here we touch upon an important point for the celebration of the Eucharist. Israel concelebrated the Eucharist with Jesus, in that they shared in the sufferings of the Servant of God. To participate in the Eucharist, to communicate with the body and blood of Christ, demands the liturgy of our life, a sharing the passion of the Servant of God. In this participation our sufferings become 'sacrifice' and so we can complete 'in [our] flesh what is lacking in Christ's affliction' (Col 1, 24)."
Pp. 103-107.
Path to Renewal.......2006-03-25
For Christians, the forty days leading up to Easter is a time of penance and contemplation culminating in the renewal of our Baptismal vows on Easter Sunday. Pope Benedict XVI's "Journey to Easter," offers us a guide to spiritual renewal during Lent through reflections on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The refections invite us to enter into Jesus' life through meditation, recognize our daily struggles in Him, and learn the way of love from his example. In Pope Benedict's able hands we are challenged to purify our souls and begin again with Christ as our role model. This book provides a road map for everyone on their journey to Easter.
