Book Description
In a world where the dead can testify against the living, someone is getting away with murder. Because to every generation are born a select few souls with violet-colored eyes, and the ability to channel the dead. Both rare and precious—and rigidly controlled by a society that craves their services—these Violets perform a number of different duties. The most fortunate increase the world's cultural heritage by channeling the still-creative spirits of famous dead artists and musicians. The least fortunate aid the police and the law courts, catching criminals by interviewing the deceased victims of violent crime.
But now the Violets themselves have become the target of a brutal serial murderer—a murderer who had learned how to mask his or her identity even from the victims. Can the FBI, aided by a Violet so scared of death that she is afraid to live, uncover the criminal in time? Or must more of her race be dispatched to the realm that has haunted them all since childhood?

Crouching behind the wooden tool shed along the back fence, the man watched the little strawberry-blond girl at play in the yard. Perspiration blotched the featureless weave of the black veil that obscured his face, and sweat oozed under the Latex of his gloves as he flexed his fingers.
It hadn't rained in Los Angeles for almost six months, and the haze of accumulated smog cast an amber pall over the pink bungalow house and its tiny back yard. The late September heat wave had dried the grass to brittle yellow needles, and patches of bare dirt mottled the lawn like mange. An inflatable wading pool decorated with Winnie the Pooh characters sagged in the center of the yard, and the girl squatted in its shallow water, wearing a one-piece bathing suit with Tigger on the front. Her wispy hair hung in horse-tail tangles about her freckled face as she made her naked Barbie doll swim in big circles around her.
The man's breath quickened, the air hot and stifling underneath his mask of crepe. The child's mother was at work, and the babysitter had gone into the house more than twenty minutes ago. It was the first time in three days that the man had seen the girl left unattended. Nevertheless, he hesitated.
Then he saw her begin to twitch.
She dropped the doll in the water and clapped her hands over her ears. "Somebody's knocking! Somebody's knocking!"
The man tensed, and mouthed words under his breath. He imagined that he could hear the soundless whispers now sifting into the girl's skull.
They had found her.
The girl stumbled out of the pool, still clutching her temples, jerking her head as if in the throes of a seizure. "Somebody's knocking! Somebody's knocking!"
The man shot a wary glance toward the back door of the house and lunged toward her.
Seeing him, the girl yelped and broke into a zigzagging run toward the house. He blocked her, but she dodged his grasping hands and

A great , sharp page turner, and actually supsenseful and scary........2007-09-24
Fans of supernatural thrillers should love this one. The story completely delivers on the premise: that rare Violets, who are able to channel the dead, are being killed one by one despite being under constant watch by the government. A government which has "for the better good" virtually stolent the lives of the Violets away from them. Not as if they could have a normal life anyways, with the dead constantly "knocking" when the Violet physically comes into contact with a "touchstone" that was also touched by the deceased, be it a necklace, a shoe, even a doorknob.
What I especially appreciated about all the books in this series is the internal logic works. There are no huge plot holes and unexplained variances that don't make sense in the world in this book. What makes the books such suspenseful, creepy, and sometimes scary page turners is that the characters act exactly as you would expect. 'Through Violet Eyes' actually picks up the pace in the final act, with several twisty plot devices that completely work in context.
I am not normally a fan of supernatural horror but this book is a serious page turner and hard to put down. My ex-roommate who is a fan of horror and the occult LOVED this book and jokingly cursed me because in addition to the Harry Potter and Thursday Next books, now he had to wait on the new Natalie Lindstrom books. In future novels as her Violet daughter and her father become potential targets used to get at her, the tension keeps racheting up. If a bad (or good) person gets murdered, that does not eliminate them from the story nor their participation in the plots! I highly recommend all four books in the series.
Eureka! Original Concept AND Great Execution.......2007-04-17
How often have you read a book with what sounds like an intriguing concept -- only to find yourself amidst a bunch of characters you could care less about going to the same old places, and doing the same old things as in every other so-so book? Too often, I've been dissappointed with great concepts - gone amok in execution.
But this one FINALLY DELIVERS A GREAT STORY, GREAT CHARACTERS AND AN ORIGINAL PLOT! YEA! for Woodworth on his first novel.
His follow up novel With Red Hands doesn't quite live up to this one, but I fell so in love with the character and concept that it too, is worth a read.
I'm hooked.......2007-03-03
Ok, I am hooked. I'm going to follow this author!! My apologies to John Saul, but I think Stephen has taken over my #2 spot for favorite authors!!
Expect more than you expect.......2007-02-18
What we read influences what we read. If we find a good book by an author, we're likely to try that author again. If we've just read a standout in a particular genre, we might want to return to that genre right away, to extend the pleasure a bit.
What we read can influence our reviews, too, and not just in the most obvious way (we must, duh, read a book to review it). I recently read a crime novel called 18 Seconds. It was a fairly standard catch-the-killer book with a twist that would drive skeptics crazy. The heroine of the book can touch a corpse and experience the last 18 seconds that person experienced. There's a dusting of pseudoscience to justify this, but the author largely relies on our willingness to suspend belief.
As it happens, the next book I picked up was a suspense novel called Through Violet Eyes about a series of murders where--wait for it--the heroine cantalktothedead. All right, all right, I could probably slog through another mystical whodunit if the writing wasn't terrible. Early on, I envisioned three Idahos for this one, a solid, middle-of-the-road book, perhaps equivalent to something Dean Koontz could knock out over a long weekend.
The more I read, the more I began to realize that my assumptions were wrong. Although the book is a whodunit, that's just the armature on which the author sculpts a richly reimagined world. Through Violet Eyes, is solidly in the realm of speculative fiction. Once one of my favorite forms, speculative fiction began as sub-genre of science fiction, mostly because the weirdness did not necessarily arrive through the rigors of science. Think Harlan Ellison.
Those with the eye color of the title--and shaved, tattooed heads--are a special offshoot of our species who have always been around. Yes, they can talk to the recently dead, an important skill when it comes to solving murders. They can also solve lesser mysteries, such as where dead Uncle Walt left the dam car keys. But author Stephen Woodworth has thought through the multiple consequences of this talent. It can bring Mozart back not only from the dead, but from the deaf, to continue writing music. It can give archeologists a fabulous tool to explain what those inexplicable objects they just dug up were used for. It can bring redemption to a tortured soul.
Through Violet Eyes is a book about an FBI search for a serial killer. If you've read enough of those books that you could write one yourself while snoozing, do not write this one off. This one slipped by me three years back when it first came out. Woodworth has written three more in the series. I will probably read them all over the next year or two, and hope that he is even now working on a fifth. With a little help from Woodworth I might resurrect my love affair with this most imaginative of genres.
An Entertaining Work of Speculative Fiction.......2006-12-07
I read a lot, and I thought THROUGH VIOLET EYES was a very original work of speculative fiction.
This novel takes place in an alternate universe where there are a limited number of human beings who can communicate with the dead. All of these people, who are called "Violets" due to their violet eyes, are trained by the government to assist law enforcement agencies track down murderers. In this novel, a serial killer is stalking Violets and the FBI is trying to catch him.
THROUGH VIOLET EYES is enjoyable, mainly because of the highly inventive plot. Woodworth's writing, however, is rather uneven. I found most of the characters rather wooden and a lot of the dialogue to be kind of flat and cliched. This blandness prevented the novel from fully coming to life for me. There is also a romantic subplot in this novel that is pretty clumsy and forced, although I found it quite touching at the end. Indeed, the ending of this novel is very well done in my opinion.
Apparently, THROUGH VIOLET EYES is the first in a paperback series; this book is strong enough to make the others worth checking out. If you like speculative fiction, you may want to give this series a try.
Three and a half stars.
Product Description
This spellbinding debut tells the tale of genetic rarities known as Violetsthe handful of violet-eyed individuals whose psychic power can blur the line between the living and the dead. Serving as channelers to the other side, the Violets provide testimony to the government from murder victims about their own killings. But now the Violets themselves are the target of a brutal serial killer, and one of them, beautiful Natalie Lindstrom, has been assigned to FBI agent Dan Atwater for protection. The killers terrible method of murder becomes apparent when the most recent victim, a little girl named Laurie, tells Natalie the horrible story of her own death at the hands of the Faceless Man. As other Violets suffer dreadful fates, Natalie and Dan search frantically for the demented maniac, hoping to find him wherever he may beamong the living...or the dead.
Customer Reviews:
An Adequate First Novel, With a Few Good Twists.......2006-07-16
In an alternative present-day world, certain particularly gifted psychics -- who are known by the unusual violet tint of their eyes -- are conscripted into service by the justice system to bring forth the souls of murder victims to testify against their killers. Now, someone is trying to destroy both the school that trains the young Violets and the older Violets -- a killer clever enough not to be have his/her face seen, nor provide any other clues that surviving Violets could use to track him down. Natalie, a Violet terrified of her own death, teams with Dan, and FBI agent with a deep guilt over having killed an innocent man in a raid gone wrong, to stop "The Violet Killer" before there are none left... including Natalie.
Mr. Woodworth is tauted as the winner of prestigious awards and schooling with which I am not familiar. He has produced a reasonably well-constructed first novel, bringing in a plot that is not truly original (what plot is?) but that has some well-crafted red herrings in the mix. The action flows reasonably well, the characters have the chance to be more than two-dimensional, and there are some interesting twists to the tale.
I find that the story promises a great deal more than the book itself delivers. For a tale of psychics who are, to some degree, vitims of the dead (the Violets "hear [the dead] knocking" almost constantly), there isn't nearly as much variety of (if you'll pardon the pun) spirit in the various characters. Most are cartoonish in nature, including the leads who, although given many chances to give themselves good avenues to change and grow, generally avoid them at all cost. If you, Constant Reader, are familiar with the visual genre of Japanese anime, you will find a great deal of similarity in the delivery of this novel and most currently popular anime. This is not a bad thing, but it's certainly not worth the accolades heaped upon the book.
The book suffers from an overabundance of similes stretched to the breaking point. It's one thing to avoid tired cliches; it's something else entirely to invent new combinations of words in an attempt to look impressive. Something similar to "shrugging [something off his shoulders] like Atlas" was almost enough to make me stop reading. I did make it through to the end, which I found to be little more than satisfying.
Overall, the book is a decent read, although not something to be overly excited over. Being both a reader and writer of this genre, I've come to expect more from authors who tackle this field. I have not read what appear to be three sequels (I was only aware of one until today). The author appears to be doing well, so perhaps my views are a bit jaded.

I must have missed something.......2007-06-06
I listen to many audio books, novels and non-fiction alike. This is one of the rare books that I removed from my car's CD player before it ended. I thought it was dreadful. The whole premise was how Cage (what a stupid name) was going to get into Jenny's pants (again). Jenny didn't know it was not her fiance but her fiance's brother who she made passionate love to in the darkness? Come on! And of course she gets pregnant the very first time - also very realistic.
I'm not going to waste any more time on this review. The book just isn't worth it.
I was "led astray" when I thought I was about to read a good book.......2007-04-25
This was perhaps the worst book I have ever read in my entire life.
Whenever I see such an author published, it gives me hope that maybe it's not as difficult as I thought to break into the elite world of "The Published."
I lost count of all the times I rolled my eyes and breathed an "Oh, please" while reading this. The plot was VERY weak, Jenny was VERY pathetic, and Cage was VERY cliche.
I agree 100% with the commenters that mention Cage raping Jenny. That's how their whole love affair starts. Is that not terrible?! Not to mentioned that they were raised practically as siblings. *shudders*
Pretty good for one of Brown's early novels.......2007-03-22
Jenny Fletcher begs her preacher fiance Hal to spend a night of passion with her before he leaves for a dangerous religious mission in Central America. In reality, it is his black sheep brother she makes love to. When Hal dies while in Central America, Cage sees this as his opportunity to be with the woman he has always loved, despite her parents' disapproval, particularly when Jenny gets a party favor from her night of passion with "Hal." When Jenny learns the truth about Cage's deception, will she be able to forgive him and remain with the man who instills such passion in her?
The interesting storyline was marred by really clunky and cheesy dialogue (a common early trait of Brown's writing that she has thankfully lost). The chemistry between the two characters is immense, the secondary characters well drawn, both brining the story from a dated soap opera to a pretty dramatic read.
A 20 year old story that was entertaining!.......2006-12-14
Although written some time ago, this is yet another Sandra Brown novel that is quick and easy to read. Here is the plot made simple: bad boy/daredevil (Cage, who is often misunderstood and harshly judged) + good son/religious zealot/martyr (Hal, who is following in his father's footsteps to be a minister) + beautiful/orphaned/virginal woman (Jenny) + hypocritical parents + forbidden love (both brothers love the same woman) + death (good son dies) + secret (Bad boy slept with good girl pretending to be brother)+ fast car (I let that one slip) + near disaster + pregnancy = a great/entertaining story.
A definite keeper...2 book series..........2006-09-15
Description from the back of the book:
Jenny Fletcher had selflessly put her needs and dreams behind those of her fiance, Hal, a man more committed to a cause than to her. On the eve of his departure for Central America, he gave Jenny what she wanted more than anything...one passionate night. It was his final gift, for he didn't return home alive.
In every way Cage Hendren was the opposite of his brother, Hal. Wild and reckless, t he black sheep of the family, he was all rough edges, with a soft spot for just one thing: Jenny. It was Cage, not Hal, who showed her the meaning of ecstasy that night. It was his child, not Hal's that Jenny carried.
And he'll do everything in his power to show her that he'd led her astray to prove that the right man had been there all along...
* I randomly picked this book out of the 200+ that I have on my shelves to read & embarrassingly I was disappointed with my selection at first. I thought this was going to be a book that I couldn't wait until the ending came but boy was I ever wrong. This is a book that I will hold on to & one of my favorites. This is one of those times where the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" comes into play. This book is a must read. Don't pass it up.
Following up to let you all know that there is another book that follows this one, The Devil's Own, it's a very good book & you will see quite a bit more of Jenny & Cage in it. Enjoy!!
Book Description
Like a tangled web of myth, stupor, and confusion, "Religion", since the beginning of time, has contrived and conspired to enslave the mind and heart of all mankind, and lead the whole world astray. Appealing to man's inherent proclivity toward ego-driven autonomy, power, and hoped for immortality, "Religion" has made promises she cannot keep. The consequences of her defective doctrines and cleverly devised creeds have been far reaching, and devastating. Rather than being an effective antidote to the unbridled passions of men, "Religion", far too often, has been its murderous facilitator. Known as Babylon in the Scriptures, the "Religion" that began with the Adversary 'Satan', was successfully packaged, marketed, and disseminated over the entire earth. In the East, these Babylonian 'Chaldean Mysteries' appeared as Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Islam. And in the West, owing to their successful assimilation throughout the Roman Empire, a harlotous union of church and state "baptized" the Chaldean Mysteries, christened heathenism, wrapped it in the banner of "Christ", and gave the world Christianity. From Eden to Egypt, from Mecca to Rome, from Babylon to Jerusalem, all nations have drunk from the chalice of her lies, for a great counterfeit has been foisted upon the whole world. Now, at long last, comes a stunning and revealing account of this powerful religious system whose spiritual and political influence has deceived the nations and led the whole world astray. At this decisive juncture of human history, all humanity stands on the brink of a cataclysmic clash of religion and civilization. The alignment of opposing forces, so accurately predicted in prophecy, will surely draw this worldly system to its fated destruction. But to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to every one who seeks to escape the deception of "Religion" for the truth of Revelation, and to those who earnestly desire to leave the broad road for the narrow, The Ligh

Erotic, Skillful, a Book with Depth.......2001-03-31
Led Astray is a long and thoughtful book, but don't let it's length scare you. It grabs and holds your attention with plenty of action, but takes the care and skill to make you intimate with not only her lead character, Kelly, but the other principles. Even some of the more minor characters are clearly developed without being tiresome or pedantic. To add spice, her erotic scenes are varied and hot, and her understanding of total power exchange thorough. This book was worth every minute it took to read, and sometimes kept me from things I should have been doing!--Penny Duff, Brandon, Florida

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys hot, lesbian erotica with an s/m slant. Very entertaining, though it should have been proofread a few more times. Typos abound.

Book Description
Octave Feuillet was a French novelist and dramatist. He began his writing career as a collaborator of Dumas the elder, but then branched out into his own work. He was popular in the Second Empire, and the Empress Eugenie once took a part in one of his plays.
Led Astray is a short novel in which a man of letters, on a government commission to survey an old abbey, meets the Countess of Palme, a typical fast young lady of the Second Empire. Inability to admit to and act upon their feelings for each other has tragic consequences.
As one critic of the time commented on Feuillet, "He has to do with things as he finds them, and if we are to believe him, what he finds is a lack of culture in women, and lack of sympathy in men, and a lack of principle in both."

Book Description
For fans of fast-paced adventure and compelling characters, the military science fiction of Nebula Award—winning author Elizabeth Moon is the perfect choice.
The brilliantly unorthodox Kylara Vatta, black-sheep scion of Vatta Transport Ltd., one of the galaxy’s wealthiest merchant houses, is a heroine like no other, blessed with a killer instinct for business and for battle. Now, in the aftermath of cold-blooded assassinations that have left her parents dead and the Vatta shipping empire shattered, Kylara faces her greatest challenge yet.
There is a time for grief and a time for revenge. This is decidedly the latter. Placing her cousin Stella in command of the trading vessel Gary Tobai, Ky embarks aboard the captured pirate ship Fair Kaleen on a twofold mission: to salvage the family business and to punish those responsible for the killings . . . before they strike again.
Since the network providing instantaneous communication between star systems has been sabotaged, news is hard to come by and available information impossible to trust. But as she travels from system to system, with Stella a step behind, Ky pieces together the clues and discovers a conspiracy of terrifying scope, breathtaking audacity, and utter ruthlessness.
The only hope the independent systems and merchants have against this powerful enemy is to band together. Unfortunately, because she commands a ship known to belong to a notorious pirate–her own relative Osman Vatta, whom she killed for his part in her parents’ deaths–Ky is met with suspicion, if not outright hostility. Rumors swirl about her intent, her very identity. Soon even Stella begins to question her cousin’s decisions and her authority to make them.
Meanwhile, the conspiracy Ky hunts is hunting her in turn, with agents insinuated into every space station, every planetary government, every arm of the military, and every merchant house–including her own. Before she can take the fight to the enemy, Kylara must survive a deadly minefield of deception and betrayal.

Customer Reviews:
Worth the slog.......2007-07-05
Much has been made of this book being the first difficult read in the Vatta's War series. It is. The middle portion of the novel turns into something of a job. (In her charming acknowledgments, Moon self-deprecatingly thanked friends and family for curbing her tendencies to go into too much detail; unfortunately, one wishes she had curbed those tendencies even more.)
Happily, the last hundred pages turn things around significantly, thanks to the entertainment derived from one antagonist's intriguing accusations (and his fate) followed swiftly by an excellent space battle. So, if you're slogging through the middle of "Engaging the Enemy," have heart that the "job" becomes pleasure at the end--and reviews have been kinder to book four.
Lame and slow.......2007-06-12
As others have noted, this is a middle volume of a series. However, I can't be as kind. I find the most of the characters' emotions and motivations in this volume unconvincing. The plot is boring and lame too. I enjoyed "Trading in Danger" and "Marque and Reprisal," but this volume stunk.
So-So.......2007-05-22
Elizabeth Moon is a self-hating fishbelly.
If you can overlook that trite PC episode -- which I almost couldn't -- you will find this book on balance enjoyable.
Engaging The Enemy.......2007-05-15
Elizabeth Moon's Engaging The Enemy is an entertaining Sci-Fi tale of a space trading company's tragedy. The Vattas are attacked by space pirates and it's the story of how Ky takes revenge. The Vatta Corporation is lead by Ky; the sole surviving daughter who is left to deal with all the destruction. The novel takes place in the future in cold black space, and among the outlying planets of the star cluster. The author describes the situation and makes the reader feel right there with the captain up on the bridge of the flag ship. The novel is full of action, twists, and a bizarre love triangle. It's a must read for the adventure type.
Engaging the Enemy.......2007-05-14
this is the third book in the series and i've found it just as interesting as the others. one thing i really like is that each book goes straight into the next one I cant wait to get to book four. also the story line is great and keeps you interested all the way through, i haven't found one dull bit yet.

Sometimes the last man on earth you'd ever want turns out to be the very one your heart secretly yearns for . . .
Engaging the Enemy
Two complete novels by #1 New York Times bestselling author
NORA ROBERTS
A Will and a Way: It wasn't easy living with her infuriating co-beneficiary, Michael Donohue -- even to fulfill her uncle's last wishes -- but headstrong Pandora McVie found it still harder not falling in love with her nemesis.
Boundary Lines: Feisty Jillian Baron and irresistibly arrogant Aaron Murdock seemed determined to carry their families' feud into another generation. But the battle waged within their own hearts pitted their mistrust against overwhelming desire.

3 1/2 stars for me.......2006-02-10
Nora Roberts writes with ease and confidence. Her prose is always lucid and her plots are credible. Characterization is one of Nora's strengths, with people being revealed rather than described, thereby allowing the reader to engage the text with greater intimacy. This aspect of her writing was recently discussed during an interview with David Letterman on the 'Tonight Show', and at the conclusion of the interview, Letterman's side-kick, Paul Shaffer, screamed out at the top of his voice, 'Hey Nora! I engaged the enemy 20 years ago. Then I married her.' To her credit, Ms Roberts ignored the buffoon's comments and maintained a dignified, Harpo Marx-like silence, concluding the interview with a honk of her bicycle horn. It was a telling moment.
ENGAGING THE ENEMY.......2005-09-28
THE BOOK ITSELF WAS QUITE "ENGAGING" AND HELD MY ATTENTION TO THE END. I JUST LOVE THE WAY NORA ROBERTS HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION TO THE VERY END.
Engaging redux!.......2004-08-30
Not until I was into this did I realize I had read it before. But it's still Nora and it was still entertaining.
A Will and a Way was entertaining but Boundary Lines was fascinating in that I think Nora was practicing for her ".....In Death" series. Some of the dialogue between Jillian and Aaron was quite the same as some of the interchange between Eve and Roarke. I loved it anyway!!! It's an addition to my collection.
A Profound Resonance.......2004-06-17

Kissing Cousins and Love Thy Neighbor.......2004-04-19
This is a two-story anthology, both written by Nora Roberts.
A WILL AND A WAY: Pandora McVie and Michael Donahue are cousins, if only by marriage. They both adored their Uncle Jolley, but their relationship with each other has always been antagonistic. Uncle Jolley had played matchmaker between them before and failed, but now he's trying again, from the great beyond. His estate is worth one hundred fifty million dollars, to be split equally between Pandora and Michael, but there's a catch. They have to move into his mansion in the Catskills and live there together for six months. If they fail, the inheritance reverts to their shallow and greedy family members. Their family, of course, conspires and uses trickery to drive them out.
BOUNDARY LINES: Jillian Baron inherited her Montana cattle ranch from her grandfather, and works tirelessly to keep it functioning at optimum level. The Barons have been feuding for generations with the neighboring ranch owners, the Murdocks. Aaron Murdock has just recently returned to assist his father with the running of the Double M. The chemistry between Jillian and Aaron is unmistakable, but someone is stealing cattle from Jillian, and all signs point to the Murdocks.
These stories were originally published separately as Silhouette Intimate Moments back in the mid 80's. I enjoyed both, and felt they each had pretty much stood the test of time. The first story felt only slightly dated. If you didn't read them when originally published, they would serve well for good, light summer reading. Separately, I would rate the first story 3 ½ stars, and the second one 4 ½ stars. Ms. Roberts does a good job portraying these volatile romances, a type I'm quite partial to reading.

Learning Spiritual Warfare.......1999-12-08
I found that Mr. Wagner's book is very helpful for me. I am involved, in my congregation, with spiritual warfare and found this book to have many helpful Scriptures for a basis but also working tools for the warfare that we are involved in. If you are wanting to know how to do battle with Satan's forces, this is a must have book.
I highly recommend this book.......1999-04-13
This is an excellent book and one of many resources I used for an elaborate paper I wrote on territorial spirits. I encourage you to prayerfully do a study on this subject. I assure you that territorial spirits are as real as a heart attack and clearly evident. Missionaries and evangelists throughout the world have witnessed the power of these demons and the tremendous results when their power is defeated by nothing other than prayer and intercession.
Peter Wagner does an excellent job giving you a complete textbook of teaching and real-life experiences in this book. Peter Wagner also emphasizes the need for balance in our prayer and study when it comes to the enemy. I have found Peter Wagner to be well-balanced and yet extremely informative and targeted.
I would also recommend reading all of his other books (almost all of which I have read) which are very informative and helpful for all of us. There is a battle raging and people are dying all around us. I encourage you to look at the real-life examples in this book and learn how the enemy operates. May the Lord bless your ministry!
Book Description

A VERY BALANCED APPROACH.......2007-04-26
The author doesn't believe there is a "demon behind every bush," but she also doesn't hide behind the fact that spiritual warfare is a necessary part of a believers life. The best chapter (and they are all great) was the one on what she calls "cognitive process" where she teaches you how to identify and take thoughts captive and how to overcome strongholds. This book WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. It is rich in Biblical support and encouragement. It has done wonders in all my relationships.
Superb Book.......2006-03-21
I am a pastor and will heartily refer many of those I counsel to purchase this book. It offers many insightful ways to battle the spirit world. Montgomery teaches the reader how to take thoughts captive, the power of the tongue, and how to equip themselves for battle. Additionally, she unfolds her own past which inculded occultism and witchcraft, and her conversion to Christianity. It's a powerful book for both men and women. It also provides depth and enough information that you'll find yourself going back again and again to refamiliarize yourself with the spiritual techniques she teaches. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I bought copies for other people and they said the same thing.
GET IT!!.......2006-02-16
AMAZING INSIGHT BY THIS AUTHOR! AFTER READING THIS BOOK, I WANTED TO RUSH RIGHT OUT AND BUY ONE FOR EVERYONE I KNOW!
POWERFUL! A MUST FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN WOMAN!!
A Life Changing Book.......2006-02-06
I got this book and read it in the same day. Unbelievable! Life Changing! Every woman should own a copy and resource back to it time and time again as she comes against the wall of resistance in life. God has had favor on this author!

Did a "doctrine race" exist alongside the much-publicized arms competition between East and West? Using recent insights from organization theory, Kimberly Marten Zisk answers this question in the affirmative. Zisk challenges the standard portrayal of Soviet military officers as bureaucratic actors wedded to the status quo: she maintains that when they were confronted by a changing external security environment, they reacted by producing innovative doctrine. The author's extensive evidence is drawn from newly declassified Soviet military journals, and from her interviews with retired high-ranking Soviet General Staff officers and highly placed Soviet-Russian civilian defense experts.
According to Zisk, the Cold War in Europe was powerfully influenced by the reactions of Soviet military officers and civilian defense experts to modifications in U.S. and NATO military doctrine. Zisk also asserts that, contrary to the expectations of many analysts, civilian intervention in military policy-making need not provoke pitched civil-military conflict. Under Gorbachev's leadership, for instance, great efforts were made to ensure that "defensive defense" policies reflected military officers' input and expertise. Engaging the Enemy makes an important contribution not only to the theory of military organizations and the history of Soviet military policy but also to current policy debates on East-West security issues.

In this thoughtful and timely book, Bishop Alexander explores his journey through the theological, scriptural, and pastoral aspects of the questions surrounding homosexuality and the Christian faith.
Customer Reviews:
What The Spirit is Saying to the Church.......2005-10-10
Bishop Alexander is a gifted theologian and pastor and he is also my diocesan bishop here in Atlanta, and I know him as a good and decent man. For that reason I would be expected to read his book on this most important subject. I am gratified to be able to say this short book is one of the most cogent and well-reasoned I have ever read on the subject of gays and lesbians and the place they should have in the Church. Some might assume that since Bishop Alexander voted to confirm Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire that he must be a "liberal" and that's that. As This Far By Grace indicates, his current position that gay people and their relationships can indeed be channels of grace is one he came to gradually and over time. He relates his own personal journey and looks critically at those scriptural passages that have been used to attack homosexuality. He does not merely engage in a battle of "proof texts" by quoting one passage to refute another; he examines the context of each and concludes that none of these Bible passages contemplates anything like a committed or monogamous relationship. For Episcopalians who have an open mind on this issue but may not fully understand it, this book treats their possible reservations with respect; it is not a polemic. It could be read by itself, or in combination with "To Set Our Hope On Christ," the US Episcopal Church's theological justification for ordination of gays to holy orders and for placing positive value on gay relationships. Together they set forth a strong case that justice for gays and lesbians is indeed what the Spirit is now saying to the Church.
He articulates what you have been feeling.......2004-10-23
This is an articulate account by someone who was there. Bishop Alexander guides you through scriptural references and invites you to consider his perspective on homosexuality and then to find your own path. This is an excellent "guide book" for the thinking Christian on this important issue.
More Than Meets the Eye.......2004-07-31
This book makes me want to become an Episcopalian. The bishop not only exaimes the "hot" passages that have been used against gays but reflects on scripture, worship, prayer and service from an Episcoplian perspective. His explanation of Midrash as an aid in interpretation and his appreciation of traditon and liturgy in Christian life are compelling and inviting. His emphasis on using your mind as well as your heart when you read the Bible is certainly a needed reminder in our time. Bible study is a part of the Christian calling. Understanding the clutural setting of these particular passages as well as so many others helps us see that there is more here than meets the eye. In the first chapter he shares his own journey from an anti-gay Christian to an affirming Christian. For those who might fear that the "evangelical" way of reading scripture is the only way, this is a valuable book. By going beyond the narrow question of homosexuality to the larger questions of faith, the bishop helps us view the entire matter from a wider perspective.
