This is a laugh-out-loud first novel, but be forewarned: Paul Beatty's humor is literate, but in- your-face outrageous. The faint of heart (or politically correct) should stay away. The White Boy Shuffle is a gleefully satiric gloss on black history and culture, featuring a main character named Gunnar (as in Myrdal) Kaufman, descendant of Euripides Kaufman, who stood aside and let Crispus Attucks get shot during the Boston Massacre, and Swen Kaufman, who--in an unfortunate reversal-- escaped south from freedom into slavery. Elsewhere, it features a character who attends Dred Scott High School, and another who works for the Department of Visual Segregation in Nashville, Tennessee, painting "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" signs.

5 out of 5 stars Couldnt put this book down........2007-07-24

A friend of mine gave me this book, she said I might like it. I can remember taking it home and not putting it down for 3 days. Luckily at that time i was in college and worked at a book store so I could read while at work. The language in this book draws you in. Its all at once, hilarious, artistic and thought provoking.

2 out of 5 stars Too abstract for my tastes.......2007-01-11

Taken literally, this book is very bizarre. Interpretting the symbolism required a little more brain power than I wanted to put in with free-time reading. However, we used this in our book club; almost everyone else liked it, and there was a lot of discussion.

3 out of 5 stars Racial Stereotypes.......2006-12-13

Paul Beatty's novel The White Boy Shuffle is about a young black boy who, after his mom feels that his growing up in "white" society is detrimental to his and his sisters racial identity decides to move to a Los Angeles suburb. Throughout the novel, Gunnar is constantly struggling to find his identity. Beatty portrays Gunnar's identification struggle by revealing the stereotypes that society places on the black community and the stereotypes that they place on themselves. At one point in the novel, Gunnar struggles escaping from "white" language and has to constantly work on maintaining the slang of the community. However, the stereotypes in the novel aren't limited to "black" and "white" as there are stereotypes about Latino's, Korean's etc. throughout the novel.
Throughout the novel, Gunnar begins to realize that he has the ability to be a talented poet. I found this part interesting because the language within the novel itself is at times poetic and can read like a prose about the social stereotypes. Also, the language of the novel can be at times difficult and confusing. As a native Montanan, I was unaware of some of the terminology throughout the novel. However, once I began to surpass the challenging language of the novel, I was able to laugh at the humor that Beatty illuminates through his satire about social labels.
I would recommend this novel to people that are looking for a challenging novel and interested in a fresh viewpoint on racial labels. The novel for me was difficult to get in to originally, but once I started to understand its purpose, it became extremely intriguing to me. I still don't understand many parts of the novel, especially the ending, but I think that was part of Beatty's purpose. He created an unpredictable narrator to tell the fictional story of a boy growing up surrounded by stereotypes and I doubt I will ever fully understand the novel, but I still found it an interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars American Society...stereotypes and labels.......2006-12-11

I'd heard of The White Boy Shuffle from fellow classmates, but hadn't picked it up until I was required to read it for one of my college courses. The novel was at first difficult to get into, due to the complexity of the language and the ideas presented. The text at times is like a poem and has a rhythmic pattern throughout making social satirical commentary on just about everything. From the first sentence of chapter one, "bluesy earthy folksy denim-overalls noble-in-the -face-of-cracker-racism aw shucks Pulitzer-Prize-winning protagonist mojo magic black man," the reader should be aware that the novel is full of these long drawn out statements that are making comment on our American society. Paul Beatty writes from the point of view of Gunnar Kaufman as he deals with trying to locate/understand his own identity. This text was at times difficult and overwhelming to understand exactly what Paul Beatty was commenting on, since it jumps from topic to topic. It is one of those novels that could be read every year and each time you read it a new idea is further brought to light. This novel is one I will surely read again and again.

I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in a text that is making a social commentary on our American society and the way in which African Americans and other cultures are discriminated against and stereotyped. The text besides making comment on our social circumstances, is also following the lead protagonist, Gunnar Kaufman, from his early schooling to college. The change for Gunnar begins as he moves from a predominately white neighborhood to a black neighborhood. Gunnar undergoes massive transformations, as he struggles to find out where he belongs and whom he truly is as he combats a world that is filled with never-ending stereotypes and labels.

5 out of 5 stars Life in Da Hood - More Complex Than Your Average Rap Video.......2006-06-07

The story details the life of a young boy who begins his life growing up "white" on the streets of Santa Monica until his Mom realizes he and his sisters are forsaking their culture in favor of "Leave it to Beaver-esque" endeavors. She promptly moves them to the mean streets of Hillside where the story begins anew.

The protagonist, who is responsible for the bulk of the narrating duties, finds a way to fit in and then finds a way to redefine what a black teenager, and finally a black man, should conform to... by not conforming at all.

Brilliantly written and poetic at times, the book shows the reader what it is like to be a black teenager growing up in a hostile environment without excluding anyone by using themes that all of us can relate to. You get to visit the ghetto without having to worry about drivebys.

Beatty does a remarkable job of silencing those of us who say, "Why can't those people just lift themselves by their bootstraps and become a banker or a forklift driver?" or "If their parent's just did a better job raising them, then maybe they could become more productive members of society". Beatty shows us there are shades of gray in these issues, removing the black and white - pun intended.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies still classics.......2006-05-09

When reading Nora's first books compared to her newest, there is a tremendous difference that some readers my not like. The old stories are shorter, purely romance-driven, often single-point-of-views by young, sheltered virgins--not much like the savvy, worldly, women of the newer books, whose plots are tense, full of twists and turns, unexpected villians and surprising developments.

But if you take Nora's early work in the proper context--that of the mid- to late-eighties romance genre, you see something else--the pure, focused talent of a woman who would become a driving force in the industry--not just in romance novels, but in woman's fiction, suspense, and futuristic novels.

Read the Nora books being reissued--and then read two or three other romance novels published in the same year as Nora's book. See the difference? Non-romance readers may not see it, as the differences are a bit subtle, but they are there. Nora and a handful of other female writers from the same period--many of whom, like Jayne Ann Krentz and contemporaries, still write and recieve almost the same fame as Nora--redefined the romance industry and novel, taking the guidelines established by publishers and male editors about romance and working around, under, or right over top of those rules.

Eventually, they were able to through those guidelines in the trash where they belonged, paving the way for the diverse romance industry we know today. Nora and those like her refused to be ashamed of writing romance, using their own names instead of pen names-virtually a requirement at the time. They made their heroines strong and clever and not to be manipulated by their older, worldlier male suitors. They gave those same males a voice, becoming the first writers to present fully-formed, human male protaganists whose point-of-view came across--hard to imagine your favorite romance written from only the ladies' point-of-view, isn't it? Men, even written ones, cannot be understood unless you can read minds, as we do now in stories told from multiple perspectives. These were the writers that began blending romance and suspense, adding fantasy and the supernatural to their stories. Some took their characters to other worlds (Jayne Ann Krentz as Jayne Castle); some to the future (Nora as JD Robb) and some into the past in a way only Austen and the Brontes every came close to managing (Stephanie Laurens, Mary Jo Putney).

Those of you who love romance, do not read these reissues books as relics, or scorn them as weak predecesors of the suspenseful romance we all love--read them with thanks and appreciation for their place in the development of the female-driven industry that we may not realize we should be grateful for. Enjoy them, look for Nora's phenomenal talent developing as she and her stories test their wings. Love these well-written early stories for what they are--the first lines in a lifelong achievement of storytelling and authorship.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-02-17

Nora Roberts' early work is just not that good...its an enjoyable afternoon read if you pick it up at the library (actually its great beach reading), but I wouldn't pay for it. The plots are typical romance...nothing new or exciting here and unlike her later work the plot isn't in depth or exciting.

2 out of 5 stars A Bit Dissapointing.......2005-08-31

I must say I was dissapointed with those 2 stories. First story is so far from reality (I know, I know, sometimes we want to get away-but not That Far!!!) I couldn't read even half of the 2nd story...It was written very poorly. Sometimes I felt like something just wasn't enough, at times opposite - like it was way too much! Anyway, I wouldn't recomend bying this book...

3 out of 5 stars Nice Blend of Old and New.......2005-08-18

Comprised of two novellas, "Impulse" and "The Best Mistake," this book serves as a showcase of Nora Roberts' talent from the early years to later. "Impulse" stars a likeable young heroine, Rebecca Malone, who impulsively quits her job, sells everything she owns, and goes on vacation til the money runs out. We catch up with her on Corfu, where she meets wealthy magnate Stephen Nicodemus. Stephen romances her, charmed by her enthusiasm for new things, while she frets over giving him the wrong impression of herself, even though she told him no lies. Typical of 80's romances, the heroine quietly longs for a man she thinks is out of her league while he's spellbound by her freshness. It was the 80's when first released, so I guess I can't complain.

It is obvious Nora had really blossomed as a writer, and started making a few of her own rules, by the time she wrote "The Best Mistake." It's the story of beautiful Zoe Fleming, working two dead-end jobs to support her son Keenan. To help make ends meet, Zoe rents out her upstairs apartment to Cooper McKinnon, a sportswriter. Coop quickly gets sucked into Zoe and Keenan's lives and feels his bachelorhood slipping through his fingers, and freaks out. Things really get bad when Zoe shrugs him off for being a jerk, and he comes to his senses. This was a cute, well-written modern family romance with a heart, showcasing Nora's talents in a quick read.

The entire book has merit, simply for showing the progressing talent of a major writer, and it was also a nice, quick read for those times a person wants to enjoy a good story, but doesn't have a lot of time.

3 out of 5 stars Romance when you least expect it.......2005-08-17

As usual the women are strong, competent, intelligent, and beautiful. The romance is the kind to bring a tear to your eye and a wish to you mind.

The first story "Impulse" while enganging and interesting is not very believable but nonetheless a good story. Filled with colorful descriptions and great characters.

"The Best Mistake" is more down to earth. A simple plan to earn more money by renting the houses extra apartment to help a single mother earn enough to cut back on her work hours to be with her son leads to more than she bargained for. I doubt if there is a single mother who doesn't wish a Coop could show up on her doorstep no matter how happy, confident, and competent she was.

If your in the mood for a romance you can't go wrong with these two.

In his lectures on philosophy and fantasy, Dr. Richard Purtill used to refer to Greek mythology as "the first soap operas." Like the endless TV series, the Titans are given unto stormy passions, contrasting with their dignity and sobriety as Olympians. There are all sorts of generational conflicts and infighting which, combined with superhuman powers makes them both dangerous and incomprehensible to mortals. It is this last sense that provides the underlying suspense in The Kaphtu Trilogy: the gods are finally unpredictable to humans, who must get on as best they can with the unknown always around the corner. Each of the stories are told in the first person by a mortal: Chryseis, a young girl taken prisoner in The Golden Gryphon Feather, Ducalion, a young boy thrust into the adult world in The Stolen Goddess. But the third book is the most ambitious, telling the story of Helen of Troy from four different viewpoints and weaving together characters from the other books as well as mortals, gods and half-gods from ancient myths who people the stories.

These new editions are large size (8X5) paperbacks printed on acid-free paper, with beautiful, full-color covers. The first book's cover is from the original art by George Barr that appeared on the DAW books pocket paperback edition in the late '70s. The second and third books both feature original art by Don Maitz, who also did the DAW paperback of The Mirror of Helen in the early '80s. "I enjoyed the opportunity to bring some mythology to light," Maitz wrote of the project; "thank you for a wonderful reading experience." I could do no better than to quote a review from F.M. Busby, whose own science fiction Demu Trilogy also deserves to be brought back into print: "With a scholar's grasp of the period and its mythology, and an unerring eye for character, Richard Purtill brings a gripping reality to the seige of Ilium. The Mirror of Helen is as real as today's news--and vastly more enjoyable. This book is a grabber!"

Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolize "break time." This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. --Gail Hudson

      Book Description

It's no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars Truely transformational - a practical approach to Spirituality.......2007-09-27

I was reading "I am that" by NisargaDatta Maharaj and was thinking about and trying to grasp, what he says - about just being the "witness" and at the right moment, one of my dear friend handed this over to me.
This book explains it. I dont claim that I am realized after reading this, but now I am confident I am on the right path towards the goal.

This is truely a transformational book. This is the practical guide to understand the mysteries behind teachings of great Masters. My approach towards looking at my life, rather towards every moment of my daily routine, is changed. It started answering my questions right from the first page and now I can apply this principle and answer many questions I have been having about stuff like "Why would creating music be transcendental" - 'why does one feel so passionate about his/her job and get satisfaction out of it'. 'why do people become instant heroes in emergency situations' - The answer - 'power of now.'
Read it and apply it in your daily routine and I am sure happiness (the inner one of course) and peace would be yours to keep.
      Enjoy.
I would recommend "I am that" - a collection of talks of Shri. Nisargadatta Maharaj, along with this book. You will have no more questions in your life about why things are the way they are.

Wish you the best for your quest.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it Simple.......2007-09-25

      Here are some powerful words.

accept always attention becomes between beyond body cannot change come conscious consciousness course create death deep deeply does ego emotion energy even ever fear feel feeling find form free future get give go god happens human ing inner itself know level life light live long longer love may means mind moment need negativity nothing now own pain part past patterns peace people person physical point power presence present problems reality relationship resistance say see self sense situation something space state still suffering surrender take things think thinking thought time true unconscious unconsciousness unmanifested use want without word world yourself

According to Amazon, these are the most commonly used words in one of the most profound books I have ever read, "The Power of NOW," by Eckhart Tolle. Its simplicity appeals to me. In a world gone mad with ritual, my poor little mind needs simplicity!

As I study different spiritual traditions, I am stunned at the shear weight of them. Nothing is ever thrown away! If an old belief is superseded by a new belief, they exist together in mutual conflict. Inconsistency is piled upon inconsistency.

If I were to seriously practice some of ancient traditions, such as kundalini yoga, I would shortly feel imprisoned. Who could possibly become enlightened when there is so much that must be accepted? If enlightenment is the goal, and the path entails letting go of our attachments, then why have so many attachments to carry down the path?

Using kundalini yoga as an example again, I love many of the meditation practices I have learned from teachers in that tradition. What I find cumbersome are the doctrines, beliefs, and traditions surrounding the practices. To me a good meditation practice works because it fits like a comfortable shoe. A shoe does not care what I believe!

I know that not every one is like me. And I know that I secretly believe everyone should be like me. And I know there are those who thrive in structured systems of belief. But by the time I read about the chakras, the nadis, the related astrological signs, and how the stars affect our karma, I want to sit under a tree and quietly meditate! Or I want to dance. Or I want to sing. My poor little head whirls at such a vast amount of knowledge. Please just let me be happy!

I suppose it is human nature to make things complicated. For example, the simple message of Christ is so hidden that one can get lost in a sea of interpretations. And when this happens, rather than sailing the course of love, which Jesus preached, we risk becoming lost in the treacherous waters of doctrines. As for the Four Noble Truths of Buddha, they are now closer to the Four Thousand Obscure Truths. Perhaps it is human nature to make things complicated, but it is my nature to make things simple, which means I am either inhuman or that I will soon complicate my need to make things simple.

But, if I do complicate the simple, I can always read "The Power of NOW" again. And I will be reminded that my beliefs are not the truth. My beliefs are only beliefs. And I will be reminded to breathe and to be still. That is simple.

Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

      4 out of 5 stars Great self-help book........2007-09-18

I enjoyed this book immensely. It's somewhat cerebrally written but not academically so that it's too obtuse. Tolle does a great job of talking about "now" and getting out of your mind and into your life. I'd recommend it for everyone.

      Book Description

Eckhart Tolle begins this best-selling spiritual guide with his own story — a tale of early despair that culminated in a tremendous experience of awakening one night soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle’s galvanizing realization was that the mind is the enemy of enlightenment, and that individuals contain the source of their own pain. The Power of Now explores these issues in depth and uncovers fresh ways of living a more fulfilling life. Now available to Spanish-language readers, the book shows how a combination of Buddhist principles, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory can connect the reader to “the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.”

5 out of 5 stars El poder del ahora.......2006-09-26

5 out of 5 stars Un libro que siempre me acompañará ........2004-06-18

      Book Description

Contains two audio tapes totaling approximately 165 minutes. The tapes are from live teaching events and were chosen specifically to augment the book THE POWER OF NOW: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. The titles of the audio tapes are: "Living the Liberated Life" and "Dealing with the Pain-body." Readers of the book will find these audio tapes to be powerful additions to their understanding of and their ability to live the practices in the book. In them, Eckhart Tolle goes more deeply into the teachings. Increased depth and fresh perspectives are added, not only through the words, but through the author's energetic presence conveyed so effectively through his voice.

4 out of 5 stars Instead get the unabridged tapes of The Power of Now.......2001-09-21

I only listened to 15 minutes of this set of tapes, but am so happy that I got the unabridged tapes of the author reading "The Power of Now" instead. This seemed to have little specific to add to the stunning material of "The Power of Now." It seems to be a mudily recorded lecture tape. "The Power of Now" is the single most helpful book on/of spiritual material that I have ever read. It is clear, pragmatic, concise and fills in gaps between other spiritual materials/traditions. It tops "A Course in Miracles". I eagerly await the companion workbook due out Oct 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Companion to the Power of Now audio tapes, vol. 1.......2001-05-24

After reading someone's negative feedback about this audio tape set, I almost didn't purchase it. On second thought, I realized that my desire to connect with more of Eckhart's energy was strong enough to purchase the tapes anyway. I had already read Eckhart's book several times and was very impressed by his clarity and obvious sense of presence. He wasn't just talking about it, he expressed it without effort. After listening to the tapes myself, I felt inclined to voice my own opinion about them. There is a depth to these tapes which reaches beyond intellectual understanding. The tapes open the receptive listener to other dimensions of awareness. I recommend these tapes to anyone who has the ears to hear not only Eckhart's words, but that which resides between the words.

5 out of 5 stars Finding 'Peace' in the power of now........2001-04-21

I ordered the companion to the 'Power of Now' instead of the first volume. I was impressed and so was my husband who is not a self-help person. Eckhart has a soothing voice with an English accent - the tapes are a recording of one of his seminars. On my journey to finding 'peace ' within myself, I have found that practicing 'being in the present', is one of the roads to this inner peace. Most of us live in the past or future (didn't realise it till now). The tapes are a helpful tool to have in this crazy world of confusion and, to calm the mind with it's excessive inner chatter. You will learn about our 'Pain Bodies'in reaction to angry situations and in seeing it in others when they are in pain. This has helped me towards my self-development. I found that in helping to deal with the 'Pain Body', 'Stuart Wilde's' teachings (Start with 'Life Was Never Meant to be a Struggle') go hand in hand with 'The Power of Now'. I recommend you listen to it when you have some 'quite time' as it is very relaxing but full of information.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-04-09

The tapes do not add much to the fine book that Mr. Tolle wrote. I give his book 5 stars. It is wonderful, clear, concise and illuminating. A sense of peace seems to emanate from his words. I was expecting more of the same from the tapes; I didn't get it. I was hoping for elaboration and answers. When I read the book I formulated many questions in my mind that I would have liked to have answered. None of them were. As to elaboration, there is a bit concerning the pain body on tape 2, but not enough, and tape 1 is a rather inarticulate rehash of other material in the book. Mr Tolle's tone seems smug at times; it cast a slight negative shadow on my very positive impression of him and his work. I was very disappointed by the tapes.

I am somewhat surprised by the other reviews which are so positive. I've only listened to the tapes once so maybe I'm judging them too harshly, on the other hand I have no desire to listen to them again.

5 out of 5 stars The Gift of Presence.......2000-09-12

Eckart Tolle, Vancouver based spiritual teacher and Banyen Books' longtime #1 bestselling author of THE POWER OF NOW, brings his compelling message of Presence - the new state of consciousness that is emerging on the planet - to us on this first set of live teaching tapes. Eckhart gently guides us to the allowing and choosing of this state of intense aliveness in which we can live free of thought, free of problems, free of suffering and free of conflict, being fully alert, fully awake and fully present. Deeply touching time and time again is the simplicity and beauty of Eckhart's profound message. Regardless of the number of times these tapes are listened to, the message seems fresh, new and something different is heard. Eckhart speaks to the human condition of unconsciousness with love, compassion and wisdom. The vibrantly alive energy field experienced through Eckhart's voice is enriched by his delightful sense of humor and creates a delicious softening in the heart center, filling one with immense gratitude.
