Book Description

I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. So begins Alexander’s extraordinary confession on the eve of his greatest crisis of leadership. By turns heroic and calculating, compassionate and utterly merciless, Alexander recounts with a warrior’s unflinching eye for detail the blood, the terror, and the tactics of his greatest battlefield victories. Whether surviving his father’s brutal assassination, presiding over a massacre, or weeping at the death of a beloved comrade-in-arms, Alexander never denies the hard realities of the code by which he lives: the virtues of war. But as much as he was feared by his enemies, he was loved and revered by his friends, his generals, and the men who followed him into battle. Often outnumbered, never outfought, Alexander conquered every enemy the world stood against him–but the one he never saw coming. . . .

Download Description

Alexander the Great (356—323 B.C.) ascended to the throne of Macedon at the age of twenty. He fought his greatest battles—including the conquest of the mighty Persian Empire—before he was twenty-five and died at the age of thirty-three, still undefeated by any enemy. His reputation as a supreme warrior and leader of men is unsurpassed in the annals of history.

In the brilliantly imagined first-person voice of Alexander the Great, acclaimed novelist Steven Pressfield brings to life his epic battles, his unerring command of his forces, and the passions and ambitions that drove him. A full-blooded, multidimensional portrait, THE VIRTUES OF WAR captures Alexander’s complex character. Alexander was a fearless commander who moved with such daring and speed that no army could withstand him; a driven leader whose ambitions knew no limits; and a man with boundless compassion for his troops, deep friendships with his generals, and profound respect for his enemies. Yet in the end, his noble qualities were subsumed by his insatiable lust for glory.

No one writes about battles as brilliantly as Pressfield, and in THE VIRTUES OF WAR he vividly describes the seminal conflicts of Alexander’s career, revealing the tactics behind them and capturing the blood, heat, and terror of the battlefield. He follows Alexander’s forces as they faced and defeated armies that far outnumbered them; delivers a thrilling frontline report from Gaugamela, the scene of Alexander’s greatest victory; and, in a memorable vignette, shows the great conqueror finally halted, not by an enemy but by the refusal of his worn-out troops to march any farther.

Epic in scope and magisterial in tone, THE VIRTUES OF WAR is sure to take its place among the classics of historical fiction.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to read, easy to put down.......2007-10-07

I guess I was spoiled by Mary Renaults Alexander Trilogy. In Pressfields book Alexander as a person just does not resonate. The admixture of modern military terminology and somewhat of a modern outlook does not gell with the historical setting and mindset as it does in Renaults novels. That said, the strength of this book is its battle scenes, and those are very well done indeed. Researchers have found it hard to recreate the actual battles that Alexander fought from the historical accounts - read Arrian for example to see what I mean - and Pressfield has done a great job of creating descriptions of the battles which ring true.

That said, battles do not make up the whole book and the remainder I personally found unsatisfying and not ringing true. Again, I suspect reading Renaults Alexander trilogy many years previously set expectations which its hard for other authors to live up to. It is very hard to get an idea of Alexander as a person from this novel. Seems very stilted overall. I did read the book through but by the end it was more of a struggle than anything else. If you enjoyed this book, take a look at Renaults trilogy, they will fill in a lot of gaps and present a good alternative view - and a far more sympathetic one for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars There's a *reason* Alexander is still remembered.......2007-08-20

This superior historical novel really ought to be read before his latest one, _The Afghan Campaign,_ which enlarges on one of Alexander's later campaigns, and from a different perspective -- but they're really two separate narratives, so no harm done if (like me) you read them in reverse order. The narrative is Alexander himself, outlining the history of his conquest of Asia for the benefit of one of the cadets who study military science in the king's tent while on campaign. He begins with his early life and his succession to the throne after the assassination of his father, Philip, himself something of a military genius. But Alexander is a prodigy, being everything his father was and far more, with the ability to look at the ground and foresee the battle that will take place there and to foresee the enemy's battle plan. He also possesses an extreme degree of charisma; his troops adore him, even when (as later in the conquest) they fear his altered personality. By the time the Macedonians have passed through Persia proper and have completely changed their approach to warfare to suit the guerilla action in Afghanistan (the king's doing again), and have reached the frontier of India, they're tired to the soul and want only to return home. But Alexander dreams of standing on the shore of the Eastern Ocean, which he's sure can't be far beyond the Ganges. This is the story of Alexander's mental evolution, from semi-barbarian king holding sway in the remote north of the Greek-speaking lands to Eastern potentate who has acquired a taste for all things Persian. But Pressfield also describes the major battles along the way, especially Gaugamela, in fascinating detail. You can see the action, really see it, and understand why each side does what it does, and why the results are what they are. In that regard, this is almost a classical military science textbook. An excellent piece of work.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocrity at its best.......2007-07-26

I don't know if the author is trying to make ancient history more understandable for the modern reader, but he turns me off. He talks about lieutenants and captains and regiments and corps as if Alexander's army were a modern one. It wasn't. To compare, try Colleen McCullough's infinitely superior 6-volume historical novel on the Roman Republic of Caesar's time. She uses the right terminology and gives the reader the feeling that both she, and now the reader, really understood how the Roman cities, army, and government were organized and what life was like then. You just don't get that with Pressfield. I assume he did research, but it's just not evident.

3 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the battles, 2 stars for the story.......2007-07-03

Steven Pressfield's novel is listed as historical fiction, and I suppose that it is. However, there is virtually no plot. The whole story is fight after fight- which to some may seem interesting, but I found it boring. Don't get me wrong, the descriptions are incredible, and it seems as if we are actually at the scene of the battle. Steven Pressfield is obviously a talented writer. I enjoy reading about battles, just not an entire book about them. But I didn't feel any emotions. I wasn't excited at the victory, and found myself skimming pages just to see if there would be anything of interest later on in the chapters.

Alexander the Great is undeniably one of the greatest generals who ever lived, and obviously war was a large part of his life. But this story- didn't make me go "Wow". If you're only interested in battles, then you'll probably like this book. But if you're like me, and you want a plot along with the battles, look elsewhere.

I'd recommend Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy: Fire from Heaven, The Persian Boy, and Funeral Games; or A Choice of Destinies by Melissa Scott; or Lord of the Two Lands by Judith Tarr; or even A Murder in Macedon by Anna Apostolou aka P.C. Doherty. All of these books are historical fiction about Alexander the Great. They all have battles, but they also are about his life, his companions (friends/enemies), and his emotions.

5 out of 5 stars History as a Novel.......2007-05-27

After all the celluloid versions of the story of Alexander the Great, its great to read a book that gives a more realistic version, and a more human version, of the iconic Alexander.

5 out of 5 stars The premise held little promise.......2007-05-17

I did not expect to like this book. I don't usually read Harlequins, and I didn't think I would see anything romantic about a prostitute and a soldier. Madeliene (Miss M)is a very young teenager from a society background who through some evil manipulations was pulled from her comfortable life and forced into prostitution. Devlin becomes her protector almost by accident, but there is a previous attraction between them. There is also a young child. These unlikely characters, along with a couple of servants, set up housekeeping and build a very sweet sort of family life together.

The reason this book exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations was the supporting cast. Not the villain, who was practically a characture, and fortunately only appeared briefly, and mostly just to become dead, but the others, who had more ambiguous roles.

The real villains were the family members, who were so convinced of the rightness of their convictions they were willing to let loved ones starve to death. And the heros were the ones who were willing to overlook society's rules and give compassion where it was deserved. There is something satisfying about that.

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I was going to.

      4 out of 5 stars A writer I can relate to.......2006-07-24

Now here is a well written beliveble story anyone would enjoy.
The synopsis of the book as already been well written by the other reviewers, so I will not repeat it here.

This book as I mentioned before is VERY VERY well written and researched for it's Genre, the plot is excellent, the dialect and even some humor was excellently written.

The only reason why I cannot give it a full five star inspite of my rave reviews is very personal.
I have to be able to fall in love with the Hero of anybook I read. I could not in good faith give this Hero my heart.
I'm much into Alpha male, take charge, don't bow to anyone type of characters and the Hero in this book was not such a man.
Other than that minor personal preference this book is an awesome read.

Regency London in all its darkness and splendor is the setting for this heart-wrenching story of love and salvation. The novel opens at a London gaming club where the unlikely heroine Madeleine, known as "The Mysterious Miss M," awaits with dread the arrival of her next client. The alluring and very young Madeline is, as always, the sexual prize for the night's winner of a high-stakes card game. Tonight, that winner is Lord Devlin Steele, a young lieutenant on leave from the war in France. He is kind, comforting and respectful to Madeleine and, for the first time since being forced into this shameful existence, she is physically attracted to someone. Devlin is intrigued with her as well, partly because she seems too well bred for her profession. They share a night of passion, and Madeleine even removes the mask that she uses to hide her identity. Devlin then leaves to rejoin his unit in France.

Three years pass, the war ends, and Devlin returns to London. He is tormented by memories of the battlefield and squanders his meager funds trying to forget the pain. He winds up at Madeline's gaming club, where he trounces the detestable and debt-ridden owner in a game of cards. In a move the owner soon regrets, he gives Madeleine to Devlin as payment for the gaming debt, freeing her at last. Devlin is taken aback when, along with Madeleine, comes her toddler daughter Linette(!) Devlin has no money to support his new "family," struggling to even put food on the table. His inheritance will be released only when he marries a woman approved by his older brother, the Marquess - and clearly Madeline will never get that approval. To make matters worse, the Marquess cuts Devlin's allowance, hoping to force him to find a wife. But with each day, Devlin grows more attached to Madeleine (and Linette), making it painful for him to consider any other woman. Madeleine is guilt-ridden for keeping Devlin from his inheritance, and Devlin is tortured by his inability to provide for her. How will this desperate but most deserving couple ever find a way?

This page-turning melodrama is perfectly put-together and extremely moving. It is not easy to make someone with Madeleine's sordid background into a sympathetic romance novel heroine, but Ms. Gaston has done it and done it very well. From the very start, I felt the hopelessness and injustice of Madeleine's situation - and the pain of her shame - and immediately rooted for her rescue. This is even before I knew the disturbing details of her fall from grace. Devlin is the perfect knight in shining armor, not necessarily perfect by society's standards, but perfect for Madeleine. His personal history and war experience make him acutely aware of what matters most in life. The love scenes are a little taut, but are in fitting with the book's atmosphere, and the couple seems truly to care for one another. There are some bad guys lurking around, but they do not overwhelm the love story, and there are two fine secondary romances. Ms. Gaston is a new writer, and clearly one worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars One day read.......2006-05-03

Maddie and Devlin are characters that captured my heart from the first few pages, then pulled me through the rest of the story wondering how it would all work out. I appreciate that the characters are 'real'. They are not perfect by any means, who is, but neither are they stupid or inordinately arrogant or milk toast. I admit that what touched me most in the story was my ability to identify with the characters. I intensely disliked the villian, just as was intended. Her secondary characters are also interesting and inspire the desire to know more about them. The interactions between the various characters doesn't feel forced, lending the feeling of the story moving naturally forward. And I'll be reading it again and again.

      3 out of 5 stars a Harlequin.......2006-03-02

The storyline for this regency is a bit different in that she's a prostitute after falling for a man's advances. Her despoiller continues to use her; like bait. Luring gentlemen for a night with the mysterious masked Miss M - whom he's trained between beatings. He never lets a man continue to see 'Miss M" often enough to threaten his hold over her -- untill he loses badly in a card game to Lord Devlin. Devlin truly saves Miss M (Uh, can we get a name please?). He is a soldier who appears believably in love with her. The gentleman is later willing to set mother and child up comfortably, to never see her again, after the marriage he must make - as he feels responsible for her.

Sap. I have not read a Harlequin in so long ... I'd forgotten the paragraphs of words I must have skimmed over before going on to authors that could keep me interested. Though I recommend this book for Harlequin subscribers or strictly Regency Lovers, some may prefer a more exciting storyline, this doesn't include that constant level of stimulation I've come to expect.

        3 out of 5 stars Kess - the terrible.......2005-11-14

I did enjoy this book and I enjoyed the prince's character very much. Very rarely will you find a fellow who has such wonderful manners and constraint despite all that ails him. I, however, loathed Kess. There is no doubt she is a strong female presence, She was bitter, contempuous, heartless, selfish...I could go on and on. Even in the end she never really redeemed herself. I'm positive that the prince's worst luck of all is that he didn't dump the "wonderful" princess on her behind in a desert somewhere. Kess ruined a very good reading experience. The book gets three stars for the prince...I wish him well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most enjoyable fantasy novels I have found..........2004-07-13

It is not often that you find realistic characters in a fantsy novel completely involved in a fantasy world... Generally you find fantasy characters in such a world. Just a bit too different in their thinking to be truely related to. Susan Dexter has created wonderful characters which are perfect for the story she is writing and perfect for the world they are in without making them unbelievable. A great fantasy.

        5 out of 5 stars A Fun, High-Fantasy Romp Through Esdragon!.......2002-07-12

The Prince of Ill Luck is the story of Leith, Prince of the Isles, whom everyone believes was born "demon-cursed." Everywhere he goes, disaster follows in his wake: earthquakes, boats capsizing, buildings collapsing, etc. When he is the sole survivor of a shipwreck, he has no idea where he is, no money, no food, nothing. Then he finds Valadan, a magical warhorse wandering the interior of the isle. With Valadan's help, he is able to win the hand of the duke's daughter...but Kessallandria never intended to be won. So Leith strikes a bargain with her - he won't hold her to her promise of marriage if he can come with her to find her mother, a witch, whom he hopes can lift his curse. This is the inauspicious beginning to a grand adventure between a headstrong young lady searching for her mother, a witch, and exploring her own powers, and the Prince of the Isles, whose deplorably bad luck follows him wherever he goes.

This was a superb novel. The story was finely crafted, the characters were full of life and fun to get to know, the Isle of Esdragon became real to the reader, in short, it had absolutely everything a fantasy could wish for - and it was funny, too! I highly recommend searching this book out and buying it, you will not regret it!

        5 out of 5 stars Terrific stuff!.......1999-05-07

The hero, Leith, is decidedly original. Plagued by bad luck all his life, he has a series of misadventures. He meant to get the gold ring on top of the glass mountian so that he could sell it to keep the marvelous war-horse, Valadan. Unfortunately, the ring came with an unwanted prize. Her name was Kessalia, and she very much resented the fact that he had won her little contest. Various incidents, some humorous and some not, follow as the two go on an anti-heroic quest to find Kess' mother. No flashing swords or bright armor here...

I strongly recommend The Prince of Ill Luck! It has some of the better characters I've ever seen, and the premise is certainly unusual.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on Earth!!!.......1999-01-22

Just have to tell you all that if you are not reading this author you are doing yourself SUCH a disservice! From the frist time I picked up Prince of Ill Luck in the library during a very snowy winter out of desperation, I was hooked, and happily, too. The plots are intriquing, the land is addicting, and the characters, well let's just say I loved them so much I named my role playing character Kessalia... :)

Faith the dog is a major portion of this book, but the Faith´s family had circumstances of their own to overcome before she became a part of that family. Faith comes in all shapes and sizes, from the fist of a little girl who simply won´t take anymore, to the two back legs of a little deformed puppy who decided to walk when life had demanded that she be put down.

This a good book about a family adopting a dog. Not just any dog though. Read the book and see how remarkable Faith is. The way this family and dog teach each other, is very touching.

2 out of 5 stars I Wish I Would Have Read the Reviews!.......2007-08-14

The other reviewers hit it right on the mark ~ this book uses the ploy of an amazing story about a dog to sell a book that is poorly written about someone's messed up (and yet still not interesting) life. The author goes off on everything that is wrong in her life and how it is all her ex-husband's fault but no one sees it . . . hello, I picked up the book to read about the dog! I don't know how this book ever got published in the first place. Save yourself the time and look up the dog's inspiring story on the internet and skip reading this author's poorly written ramblings.

3 out of 5 stars Not to nitpick but..........2007-07-31

If the book is published by Xlibris that is a self-publishing firm. You are responsible for your own copy editing. You are responsible for picking the font and correcting spelling and grammar. Just seems a little strange to blame the publisher for these errors. I haven't read the book, by the way. I considered it but I found some of the author's statements to be a little difficult to understand given her use of a self-publishing company.

1 out of 5 stars The dog is inspiring, the writing and this book are not........2007-07-04

I completely agree with the reviews below. The story about the dog was what I was interested in. The book is marketed as a book about the dog, but it ends up being about how awful her ex-husband is and all of the bad cards she was dealt. I didn't buy a book so that I could read about a bitter custody battle similar to the woman's down the street. It's written so poorly I couldn't even finish it.

1 out of 5 stars a story about a bitter child custody dispute.......2007-06-30

I was so disappointed in this book that I was compelled to write my very first book review. This book is so poorly written that I'm amazed it was ever published. As an animal lover, I was hoping to read a warm, inspiring story about a handicapped dog. Instead, the main focus of the book is a bitter child custody battle between the author and her ex-husband.

This is a story about the author, not about the dog. The part that bothered me most was that the author capitalized on the fact that the dog was handicapped, even going so far as to approach car dealers to request a donation of a new car. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

            Book Description

From the perspective of historical sociology, Richard N. Juliani traces the role of religion in the lives and communities of Italian immigrants in Philadelphia from the 1850s to the early 1930s. By the end of the nineteenth century, Philadelphia had one of the largest Italian populations in the country. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia eventually established twenty-three parishes for the exclusive use of Italians. Juliani describes the role these parishes played in developing and anchoring an ethnic community and in shaping its members' new identity as Italian Americans during the years of mass migration from Italy to America.

Priest, Parish, and People blends the history of Monsignor Antonio Isoleri—pastor from 1870 to 1926 of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi, the first Italian parish founded in the country—with that of the Italian immigrant community in Philadelphia. Relying on parish and archdiocesan records, secular and church newspapers, archives of religious orders, and Father Isoleri's personal papers, Juliani chronicles the history of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi as it grew from immigrant refuge to a large, stable, ethnic community that anchored "Little Italy" in South Philadelphia. In charting that growth, Juliani also examines conflicts between laity and clergy and between clergy and church hierarchy, as well as the remarkable fifty-six-year career of Isoleri as a spiritual and secular leader. Priest, Parish, and People provides both the details of parish history in Philadelphia and the larger context of Italian-American Catholic history.

"While Priest, Parish, and People is in itself a rich ethnographic story about a most unusual priest, a particular Philadelphia parish, and the growth of parishes to meet the needs of a rapidly growing immigrant population, it is also an important story of the struggle between Irish and Italian cultures in the assimilation process, and an interesting insight into church politics and the workings of the Roman Catholic Church." —William V. D'Antonio, Catholic University of America

"This is a well-written, in-depth study of Philadelphia's Italian Catholic community. Focusing on a parish and its remarkable pastor, it chronicles the progress of an Italian immigrant parish from its earliest days in the mid-nineteenth century to its emergence as the social and religious center for the Italian community in the early twentieth century. For the author, writing this history was clearly a labor of love. He has provided all of us with a chapter in the history of Philadelphia Catholicism that was long overdue." —Jay P. Dolan, author of In Search of an American Catholicism: A History of Religion and Culture in Tension

"Rich in detail and culled from an array of primary sources, including the extensive writings of the second pastor of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi, Richard Juliani weaves a masterful story. By tracing the nuanced interconnections between this first Italian national parish in the United States, its formidable pastor, and the growing immigrant community in South Philadelphia, this book provides new insights about Americanization and the formation of ethnic identity. Priest, Parish, and People is essential reading for scholars of American religion, immigration and urban history, and for anyone wanting to understand the Italian American experience." —Joan Saverino, Ph.D., The Historical Society of Pennsylvania

5 out of 5 stars Meditation for Kids (and other beings).......2003-02-04

This little book is all a person needs to begin the practice of meditation. Clear, concise, practical, easy to use. I wish I could have found it when I first began to learn to meditate. So many meditation books are thick and verbous; all the different approaches can be confusing. I practice Zen (generally minus Buddhism) and this book is "beginner's mind" at its best! It has no religious leanings or content. It doesn't talk about anything except "just sitting". The process is very, very clear. I bought this book for my 8 year old son who does some sitting. He related to it and understood it very well. I gave it to a 20 year old who is just beginning to meditate and it helped her to jump-start her practice. I buy up copies to give out to people who show an interest in learning to meditate.

            3 out of 5 stars It wasn't what I expected.......2001-07-12

The book wasn't really what I expected. I knew it was a childrens book but not this extent. I counted around 607 words total in this book on 64 pages. That's about 9.5 words per page. More than half of the book is simply saying that anyone can benefit from meditation. Only about 6 pages were actually giving instructions. I thought this book would pack a little more in the way of content.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation for all us kids.......1999-12-24

What a gift this little book is. Indeed, a little book with big ideas, all simply put. This is THE book for anyone interested in exploring mindfulness meditation. A "Be Here Now" for the new Millenium. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation For All Us Kids.......1999-12-24

What a wonderful introduction to meditation for kids of all ages! Fisher Huck has distilled the heart of Buddhist meditation into a small, humorous book all of us can understand and appreciate and learn from. Read this book, then buy a copy for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Essential.......1999-10-04

It was pure serendipity when I chanced on this book in the browsing halls of Barnes & Noble. It approached introducing the subject of meditation to kids, with a deft, humorous and knowing touch. The little, irreverent liner notes on page 12 were perfect in terms of striking the right note and grabbing the attention of an 11 and 5 yearold who were interested but certainly not entranced with the subject ( as they are with the brain-numbing substance marketed as 'Pokemon'!) This little book is something one can return to over and over again - the only thing I would add is a little practical two-minute exercise in being still and becoming aware. Please keep doing what you are doing, Ms Fisher Huck. Peace of mind is in our palms but so aften out of our grasp. Thanks for reminding me of that.
